Samuels named state finalist for national teaching award By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

OWHATAN – The caliber of education in Powhatan County Public Schools was recently validated again when Blythe Samuels was named as a Virginia State Finalist for the 2017 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Samuels, a computer science teacher at Powhatan High School, was one of four teachers statewide named as Virginia state finalists in July in the presidential awards, which recognize educators who develop and implement high-quality instructional programs that improve student learning. As a state-level finalist, Blythe’s application has been forwarded to the National Science Foundation’s national selection committee for consideration for the Presidential Award. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten

The program rotates between recognizing teachers for grades kindergarten through sixth one year and seventh through 12th the next, and up to 108 teachers nationwide are recognized each year.

The award recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning, the site said. Injured boy healing, faces long recovery By Laura McFarland News Editor

POWHATAN – A 3-year-old Powhatan boy injured in a riding lawn mower accident last month is slowly recovering and showing glimpses of his former bubbly personality, but he still faces a long, hard road ahead. Roan Sullivan, the son of Melissa and Sean Sullivan of Powhatan, was injured on Monday, July 24 when he wandered outside of his home in the Butterwood Creek subdivision into his yard and a relative, not knowing he was there, reversed the machine and hit him, critically wounding him. Roan’s injuries were extensive and life-altering, with most of the damage on his right side, she said. His toes and part of his right foot had to be amputated, so he will eventually require a prosthetic and need physical therapy to walk, and he lost a large part of his right forearm from elbow to wrist. Several of the surgeries have focused on skin grafts to close the wounds. The weeks since have been hard on the entire famsee ROAN pg. 6

Two of three Village parking lots complete By Laura McFarland

POWHATAN – Repaving projects involving two out of three parking lots surrounding the Village Building are almost totally complete and the third is expected to be finished in mid September, but the project hasn’t been all smooth sailing. The capital improvement program (CIP) project has faced unexpected delays and costs and has required some workaround on the part of employees and residents who use the buildings around the lot, said Ramona Carter, director of public works. However, the finished product that has already started to emerge is a good addition to the county properties from public safety, accessibility and aesthetic standpoints, she added. “I think safety has improved with the lighting, and definitely with the ADA accessibility we improved a lot of the

utilize this space and increase the number of parking spaces; improve the appearance of the area; upgrade handicap parking spaces to improve accessibility; address runoff and drainage issues that have caused “serious erosion” and improve traffic flow. The original budgeted cost for the project was $263,000, but that amount was based on a construction estimate that was done a year and a half ago, and since that time there had been some redesign and changes to the project, Carter said. Then, when bids came in for the project in January well over budget, staff requested an additional $130,000 in FY 2018 so the entire project could be done together instead of breaking it up. The final cost of the project will not be known until all work is complete, she said. The project’s contractor is Collins Clearing and Grading. The project is being completed in three phases, with the first phase, the parking lot between the Village Building and May Memorial Baptist Church, beginning on May 8, Carter said. The project hit a snag early on when workers found a defunct oil tank that was leaking in the parking lot, she said. It was too big to remove, so it was instead filled in with gravel. But before that, it had to be inspected by the Department of Environmental Quality to make sure it wasn’t leaking into groundwater. The second phase focused on the parking lot in front of the Human Services Building. Besides repaving, improvements in the project included widening the entrance to allow for two-way traffic; improving drainage; extending sidewalks for improved access, and adding eight additional employee parking spots alongside the Human Services Building to reduce congestion during days when the Free Clinic of Powhatan operates. The third phase will pave the gravel parking lot behind the Village Building and began last week. The project will extend to Tillman Road and involve making a steep slope found there flatter, which will also help drainage issues. One of the trees behind the building was examined by an arborist and it was determined it wouldn’t survive construction, so it was cut down. When they are finished, the combined parking lots will have 122 paved spots and 24 gravel spots next to the tee-ball field, Carter said. Prior to construction, there were approximately 108 spots – some gravel and some paved, some striped and some not. Lighting for the entire project will likely be one of the last things finished. The project involves adding 18 new pole mounted lights, 15 of which are new and three are replacements, Carter said. The project originally called for more but that didn’t fit with the county’s dark sky ordinance and had to be adjusted. Carter said that all of the tenants in the Village Building, human services, maintenance shop and May Memori-

al “have been extremely cooperative during the whole process.” “It is good that it was in phases because we had to move people around for parking. We spread them out over various places. All of the people were really good and patient,” she said. That doesn’t mean there haven’t been hiccups. There was some shortterm confusion with absentee voting during the primaries this summer, but it did not cause too much trouble because there were designated voter spots in front of the human services building and voter turnout was low, said Karen Alexander, director of elections. She had nothing but praise for the finished new front lots, which she said are “the best thing since sliced bread.” “There isn’t a bad spot in the whole lot. Residents and clients finally have a place to park without having to walk over unsteady gravel. It is absolutely wonderful,” she said. Alexander also praised the designated handicap spots added in front of the building, which “will be a clear cut spot for curbside voters to sit in the car and wait for us to come help them vote.” One group that felt a tremendous impact because of the project was the Powhatan Clothes Closet, which is operated by the Woman’s Club of Powhatan, with proceeds going to local organizations and nonprofits in Powhatan as well as high school scholarships. With the closure of the front parking lots, the Clothes Closet went from operating four days a week to only being open Saturdays and a half day on Sunday, June Giuliani, co-coordinator of the shop, said. Since July 23, it has been completely closed and will remain so until the back parking lot is finished. The Woman’s Club of Powhatan gives out about $28,000 in charitable donations annually, but because of all of the lost income this summer from the Clothes Closet, the group will have to significantly cut its budget, she said. “We don’t want to create waves. The space provided by the county, we don’t pay for it. Whatever it is, we go with it. But it has impacted us tremendously. It is not a complaint, it is a fact,” she said. However, she did add that she thinks the shop might not have needed to close as early as it did, a problem that seemed to stem from some lack of communication, and the club was disappointed it would not be open in time to help families before school started. Volunteers have tried to keep checking on the thrift store because people continue to leave donations outside, Giuliani said. Volunteers bring it inside, but space has become an issue because they do not have people shopping to help keep items rotating. The group will get the word out in a variety of ways when the Clothes Closet is cleared to reopen, including on its Facebook page. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

Signs aimed at speed reduction

Contributed Report The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office would like to highlight a few of the newer laws that have taken effect in the last couple of years. As of July 1, 2017, it is illegal to travel in the left lane of a two-lane highway when not turning or overtaking (passing) a vehicle that might be going slower than the posted speed. The set fine of $100 has been assigned to the Virginia Code Section 46.2-802. As of July 1, 2016, it is illegal to smoke tobacco in a vehicle with a child under the age of 8 years old. This is a secondary offence, meaning that the motorist or passenger cannot be pulled over for this offence alone but can be cited for a violation subsequent to the stop for another violation. It is important to note that the vehicle does not have to be in motion. There is a $100 fine associated with this of-

fence (Virginia Code Section 46.2-810.1) and the money goes to the Virginia Literary Fund. As of July 1, 2017, it is now legal for hunters to wear blaze pink or blaze orange while hunting in Virginia (Virginia Code Section 29.1530.1). As of July 1, 2017, electronic copies of hunting licenses are acceptable as “carrying on person” (Virginia Code Section 29.1-336). This applies to certificates and licenses. This means the electronic copy on a smart device will suffice as proof of license. If there are any questions concerning these or any other laws, residents are encouraged to visit http://law.lis.virginia. gov/vacode or call the sheriff’s office at 804598-5656. So we are very thankful to have her and wish her the best at the next stage of competition,” he said. Jones said that Samuels’ state recognition is a wonderful reflection on Powhatan County, which is no stranger to this award even excluding the fact that this is Samuels’ second time as a state finalist. This was her second time being a state finalist; she also achieved this status in 2015. “By applying I am putting myself out there as a teacher and discussing an authentic lesson that I created and facilitated with my students. I had to video tape my class and then write about it. It was nice to be recognized,” she said. Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, said he was really excited for Samuels, especially since she was recog-

recognition of Samuels at the school board meeting and pointed out that in the coming months, Samuels will be publicly recognized by the Virginia Board of Education, as well as several other mathematics and computer science organizations in Virginia, at their annual meetings. “We have done a lot of work in the last year as we have been working through deeper learning and going to conferences and meetings. ... The computer science that has been led by Mrs. Samuels is second to none not only in the state but in the nation. So we are very proud of all that she does,” Omohundro said. Dr. Samantha Martin, who recently was named principal of Pocahontas Middle School, was also a state finalist in 2014 when she was a teacher at Prince Edward County High School. “The odds on it are pretty large I would say because they only recognize four elementary and four secondary teachers in math and science a year in the entire state. So to have that many people who have been finalists and have won within a few years is typical of the talent that we have in our teaching staff that we have and certainly validation of the outstanding staff that we have,” Jones said. dents in her course investigated different data sets. Samuels said she hoped to show them that statistics and data analysis are subjects that cross over multiple curriculums. “When our students will leave high school, regardless of whether they go to college or not, they are going to be bombarded with information, either from just a visual standpoint where they are looking at info graphics, or where they may be reading the newspaper and they have to interpret the statistics that are given to them through a newspaper,” she said. “It is important for every person to know how to interpret and understand statistical information and data that is given to them, not to necessarily take it at face value. They can make their own conclusion from the information that they are given. It is a life skill in my opinion.”

rience that some of those early transition things that happen these children will already have gone through that.” When they start school in September, the kindergarteners will be assessed using PALS, a language arts reading screener, and a number knowledge test, Thomas said. Parents receive feedback all during summer school but they also will get feedback at the beginning of school along with their other kindergarten colleagues. Reece Harper, 5, was one of the children who participated in the program, and his mother said she thinks it brought him a better understand of classroom routines as well as getting him more excited to start kindergarten. “He came home saying he enjoyed it. He loved the playground, visiting the library, the dancing and the singing they did. Some of it is just silly songs to get your wiggles out,” she said. “Overall, it was a great experience. I am glad he did it. I think if he had any butterflies in September those butterflies are going to be much smaller because he understands what he is going into.” Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

at the school board’s meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 8, Dr. Martha Powers, one of the summer school coordinators, said that of the 33 children who participated, 32 were re-assessed at the end of 14 days and all of them showed improvement. The range of improvement on the screener test ranged from four to 25 points, and the average growth was 15 points. “Those kiddos worked really hard and Ellen and Amy really did an outstanding job with them. They also had a couple of great instructional assistants that provided a lot of hands-on work,” she said. The program features activities built around many of the same concepts found on the screener, but it also introduces the children to social skills, such as staying in line and following classroom procedures, as well as giving them a chance to interact with other students, Thomas said. “For some of the students who have never had formal preschool, this will be the first time they’ve actually left their parents. Sometimes there is a little emotion with it, but they see when they stay at school how much fun it is,” Thomas said. “We like to believe that when they go to kindergarten now, they will already have had such a positive expe-

knowledge to capture the information that educators felt was most valuable, she said. The screener checks their knowledge of concepts such as writing their names and knowing colors, letters, sounds, shapes, and numbers. Staff analyzed the results of the screener and then invited the students that would benefit from the program, Thomas said. In summer 2016, 17 rising kindergarteners participated in the two-week program, and everyone was surprised at the outcome. “We expanded it because of the amount of growth that was noted by the person who taught the class. She couldn’t get over how much growth there was in 15 days, anecdotally but also as it was presented in the results of the screener at the end as well,” Thomas said. In summer 2017, a second class was added to the booster program and 33 out of the 34 children invited participated. The teachers for the program were PCPS kindergarten teachers Amy Daniel and Ellen Valcourt. In a presentation on the school district’s summer curriculum given

Samuels said she chose a lesson plan from her AP computer science principles course that was focused on big data and making conclusions from it. When a government is collecting information, such as census data, because taxpayer dollars are being used to accumulate that data, it is public record. “Computer science can be used with these big data sets to help other professionals make solutions and make good decisions and gain some wisdom and insights from the big data. It is really about how useful computer science is in the world of big data and statistical analysis and the impact,” she said. Following the lesson plan she filmed, the stu-

Darkness Walk on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Richmond at Deep Run Park. The Out of the Darkness walk is a community effort to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s goals to raise awareness and support community programs. The AFSP helps provide support to those in a community who have lost a loved one to suicide, survived a suicide attempt or are struggling with mental illness,

and their loved ones. They also give talks to community groups, PTAs, and schools using different resources according to the need. One such program is for high school seniors going to college. Nearly 250,000 people across the United States will participate in walks to raise awareness about mental health resources, and bring together those in a community affected by

suicide and mental illness. The team looks forward to helping the AFSP achieve their goal of reducing suicide by 25 percent by 2025. ntering its second season under coach Chuck Robinson, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights football team is excited for the season ahead. “I’m very confident in this season,” senior Christian Straus said. “We’ve

done so much work together over the summer. I’m positive we’ll go positive.” That positivity and confidence has shown through in the practices that the team has had. The Knights have been challenging each other in practice, but the competition has been hard and constructive. The family-like environment and the

bonds the team have formed are products of the offseason work that the Knights have put in, both in the weight room and the community. “That was the most important thing for me,” Robinson said. “Last year, a lot of guys were adjusting for what we wanted. This year, we’ve got a great group of seniors who have bonded to what we want to do. There have been a

lot of things. Our weight room has been the primary bonding space. Guys have really been getting after it. We’ve got several guys who have reached new strength levels and personal records this summer. Powhatan’s golf season got off to a busy start this week. The Indians competed in three events in the first week of the season against some good competition from around the Richmond area, as well as some Jefferson District foes. On Aug. 7, Powhatan played 18 holes at Lake Chesdin in the Manchester Invitational. The Indians show 420 as a team, with Cullen Biringer and Blair McAteer each shooting 16-over 98s as the low score for Powhatan. Kory Brown shot a 38-over 110 and Wilkinson shot a 42-over 114 as the other two scores for the Indians. The tournament featured 11 other

teams, including the two-time defending Class 5 champion Deep Run Wildcats, who won the tournament with a 300. Douglas Freeman was second with a 308, followed by Midlothian, Franklin County and Clover Hill to round out the top five. On Aug. 9, the Indians traveled out to a Jefferson District meet and faced off against the entire district. Albemarle won with a score of 316, with Western Albemarle and Charlottesville finishing second and third, respectively, each scoring 341 on the day. Finally, on Aug. 10, the Indians went to Stonehenge Country Club’s 18-hole course for a quad-match with Hanover, Monacan and Matoaca. see GOLF, pg. 3B

Atlee girls misstep holds key lesson for all By Laura McFarland News Editor

ome lessons are much harder to learn than others, especially when you are young. Before this column really gets started, I want to add a disclaimer: I don’t follow sports. I don’t watch sports on television (Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is as close as I get, and that is just good storytelling), attend sporting events if I can help it, and rarely engage in conversations about sports. When my phone rings – and it does, constantly – and it is someone wanting to share some sports-related Powhatan County news, I am very quick to get them in touch with our wonderful sports editor, Billy Fellin. Keeping all of that in mind, a sports story does occasionally catch my interest, as one recently did when the Atlee Little League team was disqualified from the Little League Junior Softball World Series because of an inappropriate social media post. I read the story and was saddened for the girls, especially the ones who had nothing to do with the offending post and found themselves out of the running for a goal they had obviously worked very hard to achieve. But, as I said before, I don’t follow sports. Instead, what really struck me about this entire story boils down to a few words: youth and social media. It is an unfortunate fact that we live in an age

where people spend their day scrolling through news feeds, counting their followers, and worrying if something they posted has been liked, retweeted, or shared. And because of that, we often say our society, and especially our youth, are much more shallow, which I have no intention of debating. But the thing about that opinion is that it leads some people to dismiss the importance or power of social media. If you just eschew it all together – take down your profile or never have one in the first place – that is the end of it. But if you continue to use it and underestimate it, that can be a dangerous thing. Because here’s the thing: you’re right, in the grand scheme of things – life in general, really – the things that go on using social media don’t matter much … until they do. They don’t matter until an undefeated girls softball team loses a shot at a championship because of an inappropriate photo. They don’t matter until an employee is fired because of something he or she posted on Facebook. They don’t matter until a teenager becomes so distraught and hounded over constant cyber bullying that she doesn’t feel she can go on and commits suicide. They don’t matter until a teen girl or boy gets sucked into a relationship with an online predator thinking they are sharing their secrets with someone who means them no harm. They don’t matter … until they do. So, here is my take on the situation: life handed these girls a lesson, and whether you think their punishment was too harsh or not, I truly hope they walk

So close, and yet so far away By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

As my neighbors returned from their Outer Banks vacation last week, I couldn’t wait to hear the story of how they had survived a week of canceled plans, extra expense and a car full of real sad faces. You didn’t have to look far to find someone affected by the recent power outage that caused a blackout on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands and forced a mandatory evacuation for thousands of vacationers primed and ready for a week of sun and fun. A construction crew working on a replacement for the Bonner Bridge drove a steel rod through three connecting power cables, slicing the main connection to Hatteras and Ocracoke. Families at the end of a weeklong stay were forced to leave early and arriving renters were warned in advance that their reservations could not be honored. Residents and business owners were allowed to stay but life wasn’t easy for the first couple of days until generators and other alternative sources helped ease the discomfort. For an estimated 10,000 vacationers, it’s more than just the loss of an anticipated vacation free from the stress and anxiety of the work-a-day world. It’s a disappointment that forced families to scramble for alternate plans. For my neighbors, they opted for the Wrightsville Beach area, but were forced to stay inland due to the influx of families seeking accommodations during the busiest time of the season. For Hatteras and Ocracoke residents, it’s a financial blow that is almost impossible from which to recover. These height-of-the-season weeks provide income for the long off-season, and hurricanes and other natural disasters have an enormous impact on

the local economies. I did a story years ago on the Bonner Bridge and how residents couldn’t wait to see it go. I interviewed one man who said he drove with his windows down when crossing the bridge so he could escape easily once it collapsed around him and plunged him into the water. The new bridge is a welcome addition to the Outer Banks landscape, but, once again, I suspect the old structure is taking a verbal shellacking from locals and visitors alike. I guess it’s a sad irony that I remember when the Bonner Bridge opened and replaced a ferry that provided the only access to Hatteras Island. Back in those days, you had to really want to get to Hatteras to make the journey, but, in my mind, it was well worth it. The island’s appeal was its remote and unique nature, its other era type feel that didn’t fancy to tourists, but didn’t reject them either. It’s changed quite a bit since those days in the late 1960s. I liked it better the way it was, when Kentucky Fried Chicken was the only place to eat in Buxton. But, the appeal of the island has only increased in the passing decades and now Hatteras is a prime vacation destination for millions of visitors each year. I can certainly appreciate why they love it. Somehow, it’s hard to comprehend how one man in a hard hat could darken the dreams and change all those vacation plans in one misguided swoop, but it reconfirms that life teaches us to always expect the unexpected. My neighbor tells me that explanation worked much better on him than it did on his 6-year-old. FYI, the power is back on Hatteras and Ocracoke Island for future visitors, or the many who are saying “Just wait until next year.”

away wiser for it and not just bitter. Bitterness serves no good; wisdom can be an asset your entire life. That brings me to the reason I actually decided to write this column. While my columns are generally directed at all readers, in this instance, I particularly hoped some parents would read it and stick with it to the end. Because life just handed you a powerful, rated PG, relevant life lesson tool and it would be wise to use it. Here is a group of hardworking and dedicated girls who had something really important taken away from them because of a moment of indiscretion. They posted a photo; who cares? Only someone did care, and they paid a heavy price. There have been much heavier prices paid for making unwise decisions on what to share online, but this is a lesson that is in their backyard, appropriate for all ages and about something they can easily wrap their mind around – a sports team at a school just like theirs. Hopefully, you have had discussions with your children about social media and being wise about what they share on the internet. Hopefully, especially if they are younger, you pay attention to what apps they have on their devices, whom they are talking to online, and what personal information they are sharing. But hopefully if you haven’t, you will think about doing so now. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

L E T T E R TO T H E E D I TO R Powhatan Leadership Institute offers a great introduction to life in the county Dear Editor, I wanted to relay my thanks publicly to the Powhatan Leadership Institute (PLI) staff and board for conducting a great course this spring, I greatly enjoyed it. Additionally, I want to relay thanks to my classmates for providing an opportunity for me to meet a diverse group of Powhatan citizens that all share common goals for our county. According to PLI’s website, http:// www.plipowhatan.com/, where I learned about the course and signed up, the goal of the course is to “develop on an annual basis, a group of county citizens motivated to participate in current and future county activities” and achieve that by “educating participants about the opportunities and challenges in Powhatan County.” Throughout the many events we attended – a tour of the county, information sessions with various county departments, numerous clubs, leadership development class and a visit to the state capitol to meet our representatives – a common theme was “learning something new about the county”

each session. In my experience this was true, but there were some additional things I learned. During my interactions with my classmates, I soon realized that despite our varied backgrounds and whether someone had lived in the county their whole life or recently moved here, we all had a common goal to maintain Powhatan County as a great place to live. (Along with) the opportunity to meet with fellow citizens and many of the county leadership and staff, I could meet other goals of PLI: Better appreciate my community, build knowledge of the political process, learn county geography, culture and history and network with other citizens. The course provided a well-rounded group of events that introduced us to the various civic and social opportunities in the county that are available for citizen involvement and I’m looking forward to being involved in the upcoming class of 2018. hildren in the Butterwood Creek subdivision rallied together to help one of their neighbors when they held a fundraising lemonade stand on Saturday, Aug. 5. For two hours in the afternoon, the children sold lemonade and raffled off a piece of artwork donated by Fred Rigsby to help raise funds for the medical bills of Roan Sullivan, a 3-year-old boy who lives in their Powhatan neighborhood and was injured in a riding lawnmower accident on Monday, July 24. In addition to neighbors who came out to show support, members of the Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department and deputies with the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office also came out to show support. Organizers didn’t say exactly how much they raised but said it was significant and the children who put it on were excited to help the Sullivan family.

ntering its second season under coach Chuck Robinson, the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights football team is excited for the season ahead.

We’ve done team-oriented activities, whether it’s working in the community or pizza lunches, which have become a favorite, and watching see KNIGHTS, pg. 2B

ave for a kickball game on the field hockey field, the outdoor portions of the Powhatan High School campus were relatively quiet on Aug. 10. The woods by the football field, however, were abuzz with activity. Shouts of encouragement rang through the trees along the cross country course as first the girls, then the boys, put down their first times of the year for the Indians cross country team. “We’re very excited about this season,” co-head coach Paul Smartschan wrote in an email. “Cross country is a tough sport, but one that has great individual and team rewards. So far, everyone seems very focused on working hard to achieve their goals, which will

Football Follies or Mike Tyson’s Greatest Knockouts, things like that, to keep the guys together.” On offense, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot looks to be a strong unit. Robinson said that the key to the offense is going to be the versatility of the athletes. He wants to make sure there are multiple threats that opposing defenses have to take into account. “We want to be as versatile as we can,” he said. “There’s no need to bang a square peg into a round hole. What I would say is, offensively, we’ve got a lot of younger and older guys who can do a lot of things.” Raymond Avery and Colby Johnson are two Knights who are capable of showing multiple looks to the opposition as they’re able to play multiple positions on the field. Michael Kemp and Anthony Greenhow bring the speed threat to the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot offense. Chris Gupton is a tall and athletic target who Robinson called “the most dominant receiver in the league.” “Over this offseason,” Robinson said, “he’s really progressed in his route running and in doing things to not just be a deep threat, but an allaround receiver.” In the backfield, Dei-

lead to success and fun.” “We are very optimistic about all our runners,” co-head coach Bucky Webb added in an email. “We are looking forward to another great and rewarding season.” Last year, Lindsey Fanz qualified for the then-Group 4A state meet at Great Meadows Park in The Plains. She saved her best for last as she laid down a 20:28 over the state course, which was her best time of the entire year. Fanz finished 49th last season in the state and returns for her senior campaign as the spearhead for the girls team. In the region meet last season, Fanz was 23rd with a 21:31. Both the boys and girls teams qualified for the region meet last year. Caileigh Dintino and Brooke Dippold were two runners who finished in

on Butler returns as the main tailback for the Knights and he was very effective last season when he was able to find the holes the offensive line created. Other members of the Knights will also be utilized in the backfield to keep Butler fresh and give defenses different looks. The Knights have more than a few tight ends, which Robinson is incredibly happy with having. “We’ve got a fleet of tight ends,” he said. “I love tight ends. We’re a tight-end based offense. They can do a lot of things that can help us. We’re excited about the amount of guys that can catch the short ball and be effective, the long ball and be effective, and running backs that can get where they want to go. “This year, I feel like we can spread it around and we’ve got guys who can plug-and-play in different positions.” That flexibility forces defenses to make tough decisions and the Knights benefitting from whatever weaknesses those choices create. Last season, the Knights defense, at times, was stout. One hallmark of that unit was holding the high-scoring Richmond Christian offense largely in check during the season finale. While Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s defense was able to cause some

turnovers as well last year, stopping the run game was a weakness. That weakness has been a focal point of the offseason, Robinson said. “We want to be aggressive and stop the run,” he said. “Last year, we had some struggles with that. So, the offseason has been about stopping the run. We’re bigger, faster and stronger than we’ve been. That helps us a lot.” When it comes to stopping the run, you need a strong line and Robinson believes that is a core tenant of both the offense and defense this season for the Knights. “We’ve got some big, strong kids who like to play physical,” he said. “They want to thrive in the area that we call ‘the briar patch.’” Behind the strong defensive line is an athletic and quick secondary. “We can do some things in our coverage game to help out our defensive line and our linebacking corp to stop the run,” Robinson said. “I would say our line and secondary and the versatility, athleticism and physicality they bring are our biggest thing.” Depth is an issue for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot and Robinson hopes to avoid the injury bug that has plagued the team in recent seasons. “We don’t necessarily put terms on whether the

the top 80 in the region last year who also return for their senior seasons. Alexis Atkinson is the fourth senior leader among the girls. “(The seniors) are hungry for success,” Webb wrote. “Each of these ladies has great determination and skill, which has already been evident in our practices.” On the boys side, John Cavedo finished 58th in the region last year with a time of 19:03. Colton Vosburg was 76th and Sam Wentworth was 83rd last year. “(Cavedo), a junior, and freshman Cooper Schardt have been leading the boys team,” Webb wrote. “John continues to push himself to excel and Cooper, like our other freshman boys, brings definite skill and toughness to the team.” Webb wrote that one big thing he wants to work on this season is closing gaps during the races.

“Depending on individual strengths and skills, runners can spread out in a race,” he wrote. “The key is to finish as close to your teammates as possible, to eliminate any opportunities for opponents to score points between runners when they cross the finish line. Closing those gaps is a key to success and we’re hopeful throughout practices and workouts that the teams will tighten and improve this factor.” Powhatan will host Matoaca on Aug. 28 for a scrimmage. The first meet for the Indians is Sept. 13. Smartschan wrote that the new VHSL alignment won’t change much about cross country’s postseason goals or plans. “It should still be a tough, yet achievable, challenge to advance to states,” he wrote. “(It’s) a challenge that we welcome and use as motivation to work hard every day.”

season is a failure or not,” Robinson said. “The biggest thing I’m looking forward to seeing is a team that starts as a family and finishes as a family. We have kids that will compete and challenge each other all season.” Another goal that Robinson has set for the

team is to be the most in shape, the most technically sound and mentally sharp team anyone would play. “If we do those things in a very competitive schedule this season,” he said, “we’ll have success throughout the season and into the postseason,

hopefully.” Colby Johnson is one of several seniors who have their eyes firmly set on the postseason this year. “I think we’re definitely going to have a winning season,” he said. “We have a definite shot at the playoffs.”

Powhatan shot 398 for fourth among the teams. Biringer was the low score of the day with a 16-over 87. Drew Wilkinson was second with a 26-over 97, followed by McAteer’s 30-over 101 and Connor Voorhees’ 32over 103. The Hawks edged out the Chiefs for the top spot in the match, with Hanover shooting 321 and Monacan shooting 323. Matoaca was third with a 341. Hanover is coming off a season in which the team qualified for the then-Group 4A state tournament for the first time in school history. The Indians had several standout plays in the quad-match with the Hawks, Chiefs and Warriors. Early in the event, Brown sank a long putt from right to left of the

flag from at least 30 feet away on a tough green setup. A few holes after Brown sank his putt, Wilkinson had gotten himself in trouble in a sand trap off the fairway, but was able to chip nicely onto the green to salvage the hole. Overall, the Indians shot 54 holes of golf over a four-day stretch. But, with playing against competitors such as Deep Run, Hanover, Douglas Freeman to name a few, Powhatan can certainly benefit from being around those types of teams. Indians coach Chris Leech wrote in an email that the team has a lot of potential this season. “We have a lot of new faces, including some who will probably start,” he wrote. “They work at their games and we will definitely have something to work with.” Among the new players who have already

made impacts are Biringer, Brown and McAteer. Voorhees is new to the team, as he’s a freshman, and is someone that Leech has his eye on. “(He’s) not the longest hitter, but the keeps the ball in play and has a good mind for the game,” he wrote. Overall, staying competitive in every match is the goal of the season for Leech and the Indians. “We do that, some victories will come our way,” he wrote. With the new VHSL alignment now in effect, Leech wrote that not too much changes for the Indians on the links, as the old Conference 20 teams are still in the same race with Powhatan. “It’s pretty stacked,” he wrote. Powhatan’s golf schedule continued at Monticello on Aug. 16. The Indians host Charlottesville on Aug. 17.
