Goodman chosen as Christmas Mother in 50th year By Laura McFarland News Editor

OWHATAN – For five decades, the Powhatan Christmas Mother program has been bringing a little extra joy to people in the county during the holiday season. The program has come a long way and grown so much in the 50 years since Helen Mason started it in 1967. As Josephine “Jo” Goodman prepared to take over her official

duties as the 2017 Powhatan Christmas Mother, starting with the Labor Day Parade held on Monday, she was thrilled to be helping continue this wonderful Powhatan tradition in such an important anniversary year. “Powhatan Christmas Mother has reached a major milestone! It’s quite an honor to have been chosen to represent it on our Christmas Mother’s 50th anniversary,” she said. “Powhatan County means so much to me, as I was born here, educated our children here, and I have worked

in the county for many years.” The theme she has chosen for her year in the position, “Supporting our Community one Neighbor at a Time,” is only a reflection of what the men and women involved in the local program have already been doing since it began, she said. Goodman, 72, of Powhatan, is stepping into the role of Christmas Mother fresh, having never directly served with the program before, but she said that now she is involved, she plans to stay connected to it.

“I will continue with it because I find it very rewarding. I have a natural desire to give to others, and being the Christmas Mother allows me to leverage that desire and meet the needs of our neighbors in the community,” she said. As much work as she knows it will involve, Goodman said she sees becoming the Christmas Mother as a very personal decision. Goodman said she is a wife, mother of five and grandmother see GOODMAN, pg. 4

Delegate speaks to school board By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

OWHATAN – Del. Lee Ware briefly spoke to the Powhatan County School Board last week about key issues relating to the legislature that might affect the school division. Ware, R-65, spoke at the school board’s meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 22, focusing his talk mainly on an update to the state’s budget and unsuccessful legislation that would have put “limitations on what school boards and administration can do in relation to discipline of student who are particularly rambunctious.” Three of the school board members were present at the meeting at Powhatan Elementary School and chairman Joe Walters, who represents District 4, attended electronically. James Kunka, District 2, was absent. Ware told the board that he had learned good news the day before that the commonwealth was expected to have a surplus of $132 million on an almost $20 billion General Fund total for the fiscal year that ended June 30. “It is always better to have a surplus than a shortfall which is what we had the two previous years,” he said. By constitutional requirement, 10 percent of a surplus is dedicated to the Water Quality Improvement Fund, Ware said. The remainder both the General Assembly and Governor have dedicated to a cash reserve, largely due to the uncertainty of the federal budget and potential sequestration, Ware said. “It is entirely within the realm of possibility given the state of affairs in Washington that we would face sequestration as we did several years ago,” he said. “Per capita, Virginia is affected more than any other state in the United States because of our large defense presence and because of the large number of people whose livelihoods depend upon serving the federal government in some fashion.” On the flip side, he said the state’s unemployment numbers continue to diminish, “which talks to the fact that our private

economy is continuing to gather steam modestly but consistently,” and the legislature continues to indicate it will have a strong emphasis on K-12 education. Kim Hymel, District 5, asked if there is a way for the General Assembly to commit to giving teachers a pay increase each year. “Having lived in other states, I would really like to see this state come a little bit more ahead with recognizing teachers as professionals and that they do not make a lot of money. … They still have got to put food on the table and, if they have families, to raise their children,” she said. However, Ware said that each year the legislature has to “grapple with how things are that year” and “reconfigure what we do based on what resources we have available.” “That said, I think it will be a priority. We will continue to try to find money to dedicate as much in the way of resources to K-12 as we can. It is essential to everything we are, everything that we do s a commonwealth,” he said. Ware also talked about bills that came before the General Assembly this session regarding discipline and restricting the length of time students can be suspended or expelled. Richard Bell, R-20, introduced a bill that would have reduced the maximum length of a longterm suspension from 364 calendar days to 90 school days; prohibited a longterm suspension from extending beyond any 45 school day period unless the school principal or division superintendent finds that aggravating circumstances exist, and required that the length of any long-term suspension that extends beyond any

45 school day period shall be reviewed at the end of each such period. Another bill he introduced prohibited students in preschool through grade three from being suspended for more than five school days or expelled except for drug offenses, firearm offenses, or certain criminal acts. The first bill was left in the education and health committee and the second failed to pass. When the bills came to the floor, Ware said he strongly opposed them because he disagreed with tying the hands of school principals and administrators with those kind of restrictions, “however well intended they may be.” “…I felt strongly and I continue to believe that most of the best decisions are made right here, and to tie your hands, there needs to be a compelling and overriding reason why we do that, whether it is on the school calendar or it is on school discipline,” Ware said. Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, thanked Ware for his opposition to the bills and advocating for administrators in schools. “We want all of our kids in school. We know to learn they need to be in school. But tying administrators’ hands, I think, endangers the safety of other students in the school and our staff members in school,” Jones said. “Sometimes it is appropriate for students not to be in school if there are consequences that warrant that. “We do everything we can to prevent that, but

sometimes you have to have that option, and that is all we are asking, I think, is that that option is available to us when professionally we deem that it is warranted,” he said. Rick Cole, District 1, thanked Ware for his “common sense approach” to the issue and noted that only a few years ago the pendulum was swinging the other way with people saying schools weren’t suspending students long enough for some offenses. As a school board member and former administrator, when the legislature meets, Cole said he is always on edge about how “somebody is trying to fix some personal grievance with a statewide law that would affect everybody.” “I would hope that most legislators would speak to whoever their constituents are that are pushing these bills to make sure their constituents have actually worked with their local system to try to resolve whatever issues there are before it ends up before the state legislature in terms of passing a new law as a mandate or as a one size fits all when we know that is not true,” he said. Valarie Ayers, District 3, and Hymel both agreed with Jones that it is the priority of the school board and the schools to keep students in school and that they wrestle with the decision to suspend a studentand exhaust other options first. DISTRICT 3 CHANGE OF POLLING LOCATION

Continued from pg. 1

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School, 2501 Academy Road. With the District 1 move, Alexander asked to change the polling places mainly because the fire station’s bay, which is used for voting, does not have heating or air conditioning. This can be a problem in different times of the year, depending on the election, especially since poll workers are at their locations for 16 hours straight, she said. “This was very troublesome back in June. It was, I think, the hottest week of the year and that bay was not air conditioned, Alexander said, referencing the June primary. “We had emergency spot coolers sent out at an unbudgeted cost to the county, and it barely kept our poll workers at a normal 80 degree temperature for that 16hour day. It was rough. On the flip side, the lack of heating can be a problem when the elections fall in colder months, she said. Poll workers at the station have been known to triple layer for warmth, she added. “Luckily the voters are in and out very quickly so they don’t feel the brunt of the issue as much as the poll workers do. But I have gotten complaints from voters about how uncomfortable it is, she said. Alexander also cited issues with ADA accessibility and adequate parking, especially in busier elections.

Having the polling place at St. Luke’s instead addresses all of the issues – regular heating and air conditioning, ADA accessibility and plenty of parking, she said. Sandi Kerner, rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, said in a separate interview that when Alexander approached the church about being a polling place, she took the issue to her vestry, or governing board. They agreed it fit with the church’s goal to be involved with and serve the community. “We are not in the Village so we are not easily accessible for a lot of people to do things here. This is one way we thought we could serve. That was the consensus of the vestry, she said. The one concern the church had was a standing AA meeting that meets there on Tuesdays, but the group assured them they could make other arrangements a few times a year as needed, Kerner said. With the District 3 change, Alexander explained to the board that Bethesda Church of God told her it could no longer accommodate the polling station and asked it to be relocated. She said she approached Blessed Sacrament and found the school amenable to allowing the polling place to make a simple move across the street. “They are willing to close school for us on Election Day. That would deal with any safety concerns with children. No school bus traffic issues, she said. “They have a great location in their library. It is right off the parking lot and we can easily pinpoint it to

voters with signage. Paula Ledbetter, Blessed Sacrament’s head of school, said the decision to become a polling place was based on the fact that it was a need for the county, and the school was able to help in a time of need. “In our county, we have to help each other out when we are able to, she said. The school will not have classes on Election Day; but it is a parent/teacher conference day, which was originally scheduled for another day that week but was swapped to make this situation work. After no one spoke during the supervisors’ public hearing held on the polling place change, Chairman Bill Melton, who represents District 4, said it was incumbent upon the board to “support the registrar and the electoral board in their selection of making sure that their poll workers and the citizens are in a safe environment. “It gives them the ability for better ingress, egress and parking, and that is what this is all about, he said. “The other situation was the church was nice enough to let us to use it, and unfortunately through growth they decided they need to use the facility for their needs. Luckily we were able to find a location that meets the need almost across the street. The board then voted unanimously to make the polling place location changes. Fundraiser for gym held in memory of Special Agent Mike Walter

Powhatan Auto Body and Glass Repairs opens at new location

Powhatan Public Safety Communications Department held a drive-thru spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Sunday, Aug. 27 at The Brick House Diner in Midlothian for Blackhawk Gym. The event raised more than $3,300 for the wrestling program. Organizers expressed appreciation to all CONTRIBUTED PHOTO the volunteers and everyone that made it possible, including Brick House Diner owner Vic Routsis and family, Powhatan Sheriff Brad Nunnally and deputies, VCU Police Department, and Blackhawk wrestlers and families (orange shirts). The event raised money for the gym in memory of Virginia State Police Special Agent Mike Walter.

Powhatan Auto Body and Glass Repairs opened in its new location at 4160 Old Buckingham Road on Monday, Aug. 21. Owner Barron Williams has been in the business for over 30 years and welcomes people to stop in for their auto repair and glass needs. Also at the ribbon cutting at the new location were Powhatan County Board of Supervisors members David Williams, who represents District 1, and Billy Melton, District 4.

commit because she was working full time. But when the outgoing Christmas Mother, Teresa Whitaker, approached her this time, she said she wasn’t getting any younger and there wouldn’t be a better time than now. When she told her husband of 54 years, Obadiah “Obie” Goodman Sr., and her children, she said they were all truly excited for her. “They always ask me, ‘Mom, what is it in this world you want to do?’ I always say, ‘to love y’all.’ But this makes me happier than anything in the world to be the Christmas Mother,” Goodman said. “I feel for once I am doing something for myself and for the community that is bigger than all of the other jobs I have had serving the community. I am thrilled and my children are behind me.” When the Powhatan Christmas Everyday Committee started having discussions earlier this year about who should be the new Christmas Mother, Goodman’s name came up several times, as it had in the past, Whitaker said. “Half the committee knew her already. Even though she has never worked on the committee, because she has past relationships with many of the committee members, I felt it would be a good fit,” Whitaker said. On the flip side of that, Goodman said she felt comfortable becoming the Christmas Mother because there are so many committee members who have been involved for years. They have been very gracious to her since she accepted the role. “I feel that the Christmas Mother has been going on 50 years and it is working beautifully. Why change anything that is already working?” she said. Whitaker described Goodman as warm, genuine, compassionate, caring, and excited about being the new Christmas Mother. Added to that, Goodman has lived in Powhatan almost her entire life, so she truly does know the county and want the best for it, Whitaker added.

sweetheart, lived in New York. Together, the couple raised five children, who are now all grown: Paula Goodman, Paulette Goodman, Obadiah Goodman Jr., Shantel Luckett, Jennifer Phillips. Other than a year in the public school system and two years working with the local social services’ heating and air conditioning assistance program, Goodman said almost her entire career has been in the banking industry. She worked for the original Bank of Powhatan for 12 years and then moved to Central Virginia Bank, which she retired from in 2007 after 18 years. About six years ago, Goodman said she ran into some former co-workers who asked her if she missed working at a bank. She told them she did, and the next day she got a call from New Horizon Bank. “I dove right in and that is where I am now,” she said, adding it is a part-time position. Through the years, outside her family and work, she has been involved in her church, Mt. Pero Baptist Church, and its community outreach as well as Relay for Life, and other personal commitments, she said. Growing up in Powhatan, Goodman said she remembers Christmas being a wonderful time even without all of the nice gifts people receive now. They were grateful for what they did get, she said. But with the Christmas Mother program now, she said she is looking forward to helping bring a little happiness and take some of the strain off of people who don’t have money to spend at that time. The program will take applications from 5 to 6:45 p. m. on Oct. 4, 11, 18, and 25 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 7, 14, 21, and 28 at the Powhatan County Public Library. laughs from the entire family! Giddy-up on the stands to watch The Virginia High School Rodeo participants set to compete in several classes on both Saturday and Sunday and the Old Dominion Draft Horse and Mule Association which will provide draft horse demonstrations, sled rides, exhibits and displays throughout the weekend. For those interested in the musical side of life, Field Day of the Past offers a variety of delights for the ear. Music can be heard in Springfield Church and on the Field Day Sound Stage throughout the weekend. Field Day of the Past also encourages future musicians to get involved with Jeff Robbins playing mountain music on his pork ‘n bean can guitar. Children are invited to take a quick lesson and then to take a pork ‘n bean guitar home to practice their new skills! Boot and Britches will be back with their 1923 Dream Camper to share their melodious music and comical musing with the crowds. Jim Lavender, who bases his humor on the premise that there’s nothing funnier than the truth, will also bring storytelling to the show in 2017. Audience members will be invited to the mic to share their own tall tales and humorous antics. The Rappahannock River Railroaders will be onsite Sept. 16 with their mobile display of G-gauge, O-gauge and HOgauge model trains, and who doesn’t love a model train display? The display is a work in progress and has visited several other events this year. Heritage crafts will be on display with Rust and Flame who invite “apprentices to try their hand at horseshoe making. Make sure your survival skills are sharp with Spencer Two Dogs Bolejack, who will teach how to answer the call of the wild. The James River Carvers Association will be creating their wooden masterpieces for all to watch, alongside spinners, weavers and dyers. All are willing to explain their crafts and take time to teach the skills of our ancestors. For those who seek excitement and

thrills, Truck Pulls will be facing off on Friday and Saturday nights and the tractor pullers on Saturday and Sunday. Lawn and garden tractor pullers can show their stuff on Saturday and Sunday. or 25 years Field Day of the Past has been offering an educational, entertaining and exciting event for the whole family. Field Day of the Past has grown beyond a “nice little show that displayed tractors and Virginia history to attracting 45,000 people in three days. “We want to create opportunities for cross-generational sharing said Melinda Gammon, Field Day of the Past’s executive director. “The show is really about grandparents sharing with grandkids how life used to be in a fun and interactive setting. The event has grown over the past quarter century, but it still keeps close to its goal to provide fun and educational entertainment for everyone in the family, with an eye to preserving and presenting Virginia’s history as well as offering more traditional fair activities to entice even your most boring friend. The 2017 Field Day of the Past runs from Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Truck pulls begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $10 on Friday, $15 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday. Senior passes are $8 for those 62 and older. Two- and threeday passes are available at the gate for $20 and $23, respectively. A block of 10 tickets is sold in advance for $75. These tickets are good for any one show day. Parking is free. Food is available on the grounds. No alcoholic beverages are allowed. For those interested in history, Field Day of the Past has a plethora of activities. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War II and the 100th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War I, Field Day of the Past will offer exhibits depicting the lives of Americans during the Great Wars and a World War II encampment which will also display WWII era vehicles. Civil War buffs will enjoy Richmond Discoveries’ Civil War Camp with demonstrations and displays of artifacts from the era. Be sure to check in with Hoyt Hill to learn about the madness and mercies of Civil War medicine. Little farmers and big ones alike will be delighted by the Friendly Farmers Barnyard Review, a two person, farm themed family variety show, which includes agricultural information, farm safety tips, comedy, music, art, farm themed magic and illusions will join the lineup this year. As always the Goochland 4-H will be on hand to show off their livestock which they have raised and cared for during the year. Show-Me Swine Racers will join the event this year at Pork Chop Downs where porcine racing of various breeds of pigs result in some great belly

cotton candy and get the best view of the show at the top of the Ferris wheel! Be sure to visit Field Day of the Past volunteers who will be hard at work all three days at the many permanent exhibits throughout the grounds. The Field Day of the Past Post Office will be open and will be offering a special cancellation stamp designed specifically for the event. In the Educational Building, the kitchen exhibit and the farm exhibit will feature tools and artifacts from past eras. The rumbles and crashes of antique earthmoving equipment can be witness by all who pass by! For the duration of the project, Turner said he is not expecting work to have a noticeable impact on the parking situation around the courthouse area, which can become difficult at times. However, that doesn’t mean the project will have no effect, he added. “We do ask for (the public’s) patience because construction always impacts people and it is for the improvement of their county. Ramona Carter, director of public works, spoke before the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors at its meeting on June 26 about the courthouse expansion project, which had its budget increased by more than $1 million because of delays caused by changes to the design, a natural rise in construction prices, and a low number of bids received. The legacy of Watching, waiting, worrying the lost socks By Laura McFarland News Editor

W

orry is exhausting. I have literally had days where I walked for miles and miles and did backbreaking physical work and didn’t come out as tired on the other side as early last week. As I write this column, it is Wednesday, Aug. 30, and it is the first time in about a week that I haven’t felt like a heavy weight was sitting firmly on my chest. As I have mentioned in columns in the past, I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. The vast majority of my family members live somewhere within the wide expanse that people refer to simply as Houston as well as a good many friends. So, when news started heating up about a hurricane that was going to drop record amounts of rain on the place that is home to so many people I love, I did what any person who lives 1,100 miles from the action and feels absolutely helpless does: I worried and prayed. As family members trapped in their homes watched the water quickly rise around them, I sent pestering texts asking how they were. Do you have electricity? Yes. Is your plumbing still working? Yes. Is the water in your house? No. Is it close? It depended on who I asked. Then there was the idiotic move of sitting and watching endless amounts of devastating footage on the news. You don’t have to imagine what the worst case scenario is for your loved ones when you can see it in living color on your television and played out in photos shared on social media. The image of nursing home residents submerged in several feet of water while waiting for rescue will forever be burned into my brain. Hearing the death toll had risen again (at least 47 people as of Sept. 1) shattered me. I count my family so fortunate. There was some damage, but they all were able to stay in their homes and ride out the storm. None of their places of business were destroyed, so they still had jobs to go back to as the waters receded. Many people were not so fortunate and lost everything. So instead of dwelling any more on those feelings of hopelessness, I wanted to focus the rest of this column on helping provide a little hope. A conversation with Jeff Caldwell, director of external affairs with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), was very enlightening on the topic of good ways to help and ways that should be avoided. As the images have shown us, the water was still high in some areas even late in the week. The city does

not necessarily need unsolicited clothing, toiletries or other items being sent down there because it takes manpower away from ongoing rescue efforts. “The best thing that individual citizens should do is donate cash to reputable nonprofit and volunteer organizations already on the ground in Texas. This cash allows them to purchase the needed supplies for their direct aid and also helps the local economy to recover as they spend this money in local businesses to buy those supplies and help the businesses recover after the storm,” he said. Finding a reputable agency to donate to is important. My first thought was the American Red Cross, but, if individuals want more choices, Caldwell recommended visiting the website for the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, www.nvoad.org. The site gives a list of nonprofits and organizations who are already working to help in Houston. It gives you links to not only learn what the organization is but what efforts are ongoing in Texas and Louisiana. Houston will always be my hometown, but Virginia is my home now. So, it was heartwarming to learn what efforts my adopted home state is making to help in this catastrophe. According to a release from the governor’s office that I received earlier on Aug. 30, the Commonwealth of Virginia will send seven National Guard helicopters and approximately 40 soldiers to support rescue operations. Fairfax County and Virginia Beach have sent water rescue crews from their Urban Search and Rescue teams to the area in response to the requests from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for direct assistance in the federal response effort. The Virginia Department of Forestry has deployed a 20-person incident management team to assist the U.S. Forest Service as it responds to the incident. VDEM is sending emergency managers to assist in active sheltering operations and the coordination of the many volunteer organizations on the ground. And that doesn’t even account for all of the efforts by individuals just reaching out to fellow human beings. Just as with other places that have suffered natural disasters, helping the cities and towns affected by Hurricane Harvey recover is going to be a long-term effort. It will take years and even decades for some areas to bounce back from this historic storm. But we also know from other places that have suffered utter devastation that it can be done, and my heartfelt gratitude goes out to people around the country and even the world who are helping or will help flood victims on that road to recovery. When I first moved into my apartment, I would hear water running in the unit above me at regular intervals at odd times of the night. After establishing a friendly relationship with the elderly gentleman who lived in the upper abode, I quizzed him on the late night mystery. He explained that once a week he washed his socks in the bathtub and it took several runs of water to rinse them. “Why?” I asked. “They always get lost in the washing machine or somewhere in between the hamper and the washer,” he laughed. Now, I’ve learned not to question the wisdom of elderly gentleman, and John was the type of man whose gentle nature commanded an immediate respect ... and affection. So I didn’t question his sock philosophy. I could, however, commiserate with the former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer turned resident supervisor at the University of Virginia. In his years in Charlottesville, he mentored thousands of students while guiding them through their college careers. He later explained that’s where his sock paranoia began. Each day the laundry room contained dozens of unclaimed socks, all matchless and seemingly bunched with no consideration for rhyme or reason. I realized that I, too, was the victim of whatever or whoever was responsible for the theft of millions of single socks, making lives miserable for millions who hop around the floor on Monday morning looking for a match. In our house, the hope for a solution provides a sense of eternal hope and optimism, and we have bags, boxes and suitcases filled with socks that no longer have a companion, or even more frightening have a match located oh so close in one of the competing storing options. All orphans to be sure, but we often talk of our plan to pour all the socks on the floor and match the ones we can and toss the ones we can’t. Problem is we never do it, and I’m beginning to believe that sock sorting prompts procrastination. But what about that bottom drawer that contains dozens of black dress socks, all of them with some unique distinct quality that makes them unfit for a match, at least in that location. Or that group of white ankle socks that all appear similar at first glance but on closer examination have their own distinct brands or markings. Only the luckiest of this unfortunate group will find true happiness with a match, and most will eventually suffer a fate worse than Goodwill. So, where do all these socks go? Well, you certainly don’t expect answers from me especially knowing a man with a much more expansive knowledge base than most of us who can’t come up with a solution. I used to notice my kids wearing socks that didn’t match, so I finally inquired regarding the choice and was shocked to learn the selection was made more from necessity than preference. So, I bought more socks and all of those eventually suffered the same fate as their predecesors. I’m convinced there is a solution out there for lost socks, and I’m sure the internet is overrun with gadgets, recommendations and homespun solutions to the nagging problem … but I feel this is something I need to solve on my own, a sort of rite of passage for the seekers of truth regarding the legacy of the missing sock.

The bug days of summer By Virginia McCown Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardener

Question: What are these tiny, hairy worms in my pecan trees, and what can I do to stop them? Answer: There is no deceiving the tangled web this worm is weaving. The nasty little creatures are fall webworms (Hyphantria cunea). These caterpillars – often confused with tent worms or bag worms – begin their webs from the ends of the branches. Fall webworms are often found on pecan, sourwood, and persimmon trees at the end of summer or fall. But paw paws and other trees often prove attractive to them as well. Fortunately, webworm damage is mostly cosmetic. Worry only if you have an already failing or distressed tree. Fall webworms can be destroyed by pulling down and destroying the webs within reach. Should you use pesti-

Bridges Out of Poverty workshops aim to close the gap Contributed Report The Powhatan Community Action Program is sponsoring three consecutive workshops on Bridges Out of Poverty on Sept. 14, 21 and 28 at St. John Neumann Church from 6 to 8 p.m. Bridges has several key concepts. This workshop focuses on economic diversity, not racial or cultural diversity, and is based on the fact that poverty is relative and occurs in all races and in all countries. Economic class is a continuous line, not a clear-cut distinction.

Generational poverty and situational poverty are different, and this work is based on patterns. All patterns have exceptions. An individual brings with him/her the hidden rules of the class in which he/she was raised. Schools and businesses operate from middle-class norms and use the hidden rules of middle class. For our customers to be successful, we must understand their hidden rules and teach the rules that will make them successful at school, at work, and in the community.

We can neither excuse persons from poverty, nor scold them for not knowing. As professionals we provide support, insistence, and expectations. In order to move from poverty to middle class or from middle class to wealth, an individual must give up relationships (at least for a time) for achievement. We cannot blame the victims of poverty for being in poverty. We cannot continue to support stereotypes and prejudices about the poor. We encourage all of our community

partners who work with and provide services to those in poverty to attend. We hope you will gain a better understanding of how poverty impacts the lives and futures of those trapped in poverty, and how it handicaps children being raised in poverty. To register, email to Catherine Pemberton, director of the Powhatan Department of Social Services, at Catherine. pemberton@dss.virginia.gov. Rain doesn’t slow Knights in 26-12 win By Ellis Hopson Contributing Writer

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot probably wasn’t expecting a rain-soaked battle in the trenches in their Sept. 1 season opener, but that’s exactly what they got. The Knights displayed their mental toughness and ability to overcome mistakes in a season-opening 26-12 win

over Broadwater Academy. Despite a sloppy first half, the team was able to lock in and do enough to win the game, a trait that can only be a good sign for the season to come. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s defense made a statement from the opening drive of the game, when they forced Broadwater Academy backward on three consecutive plays.

Three chaotic plays then occurred consecutively in a bizarre sequence. The Knights’ opening drive was ended after they lost a fumble. On the very next play, Broadwater’s QB was picked off by Blessed Sacrament Huguenot freshman Anthony Greenhow. Then, the Knights gifted the ball back to the Vikings with an interception of

their own. The teams exchanged drives that were stalled out by negative plays for the remainder of the scoreless first quarter. Countless fumbles and botched exchanges were hallmarks of the first half in the driving rain. “The conditions were certainly going to be a factor. We struggled a little bit see KNIGHTS, pg. 2B

Late touchdown dooms Powhatan in opener 26-21 By Ellis Hopson Contributing Writer

Coming into the season, it was evident that the Powhatan Indians would be a team in transition. With only five of 22 starters returning, many players that will be key for Powhatan will have to go through a learning process over the course of this season. At the moment, this group doesn’t possess all of the characteristics typically seen from a Powhatan football team. However, the Indians’ season-opening loss to Midlothian displayed both PHOTO BY ANJIE KAY their inexperience and the potential they Powhatan’s Jacob Taylor (2) rushed for two touchdowns, including an 80- could reach when all is said and done in yard rumble, in the opening day loss for the Indians against Midlothian. 2017.

An early-season victory over Midlothian has become something of a Powhatan football tradition. Since the annual series started in 2009, the Indians had lost only in 2012’s game entering this year’s contest. Early in the first quarter, it appeared the pattern would continue. After the teams exchanged punts to start the game, Powhatan opened the scoring with a huge play. Junior running back Jacob Taylor rumbled 58 yards for the touchdown, regaining his balance several times and shrugging off defenders in the process. On the ensuing kickoff, Powhatan kept the momentum in its favor by recovering a fumble on the return. see INDIANS, pg. 3B

Indians field hockey opens with 3-0 win By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

It was a pleasantly cool night on Aug. 30 when the Powhatan Indians field hockey team opened their 2017 season against Region B foe Hanover at the Hawks’ home field. Appropriately, the Indians were cool and collected as they defeated Hanover 3-0 to start the season with a tally mark in the win column. The game was a welcome milestone for coach Steph Brooks and her Indians players from the offseason. She said everyone was very excited to begin the year, but some apprehension was present as well. “At practice and in the scrimmages, no one had really stepped up,” she said. “We were thinking we didn’t know who would score and how it would go. We talked about how someone needed to step up. We had changed positions around a lot. We were excited to get to the first game to get into the groove of things.” Early on against the Hawks, Powhat-

with the rain and the wet ball,” Blessed Sacrament Huguenot head coach Chuck Robinson said. After another Knights fumble to begin the second quarter and a turnover on downs by the Vikings, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot broke the game’s first big play. Senior Colby Johnson entered the game and rumbled for 58 yards down the right side to move the Knights into scoring range. Three plays later, Johnson took it in from two yards out to give Blessed Sacrament Huguenot a 7-0 lead at the 5:07 mark. The Knights’ defense stiffened again on the ensuing drive, coming up with a sack on a fourth-and-long at midfield. However, the next offensive drive stalled out as time expired in the first half.

an had some chances in the 20th minute on several corner chances. Michala Taylor had a chance during this surge of opportunities, but couldn’t beat the Hanover defense. Hanover did put some pressure on the Indians defense, but goalie Gatlin Snyder was all over the cage during the game, making several diving and sliding saves to keep the ball out of the net. In the 28th minute of play, after earning a corner just a minute early, the Indians broke through on the scoreboard. After a scramble in front for a loose ball, Calie Rehme had a shot and sent it on net. The attempt ricocheted off a stick and into the Hawks goal for a 1-0 lead. “I’m not really used to that, but as a midfielder now, I feel like I have to put the ball on the cage,” she said. “It was a team effort and it felt good.” Rehme’s goal sent the Indians to the halftime break up by one on the scoreboard, but the scoring wasn’t done for Powhatan. Just two minutes into the second half, the Indians came out and put monumental pressure on the Hawks defense.

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot came out of the locker room for the second half just as the rain was finally coming to a halt, and they quickly took advantage of the improved conditions. Johnson led the way on another scoring drive, ripping off a pair of 22yard runs before carrying the ball the final eight yards into the end zone. A missed extra point kept the lead at 13-0. The Knights’ defense took notice of the improved weather as well, forcing a three-and-out on Broadwater Academy’s first possession of the half. A blocked punt on fourth down capped off the defensive stand. “We challenge our defense to dominate the line of scrimmage. We did a pretty good job of getting push up front.,” Robinson said. “We’re a trench team, a “briar patch” team, and for the most part we did a pretty good

job of that.” Two drives later, the Knights continued to put the load on Johnson, who continued to dominate the game. Johnson carried the ball on six of the seven plays on the way to the end zone, and weaved his way in from 16 yards out to put the Knights up 19-0. Johnson totaled 239 yards rushing on the night. “That guy is a Swiss Army knife. He can do almost anything in our offense,” Robinson said. “Colby came in and did some great things, and his elusiveness complemented the push our offensive line was getting.” Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s defense continued to give the Vikings fits, as sophomore Raymond Avery came down with an interception for the Knights on the first play of a Broadwater Academy drive to close out the third quarter. The Vikings finally

That pressure allowed Danielle Bigham to beat the Hanover keeper for a goal off a corner opportunity to make it 2-0. Taylor scored in the 43rd minute of play to make it to the final of 3-0. Hanover had a handful of chances on goal in the second half, but Snyder and the defense stood firm to the Hawks attack. In the 37th, 40th and 51st minute, Hanover had corner chances on the Powhatan net, but mustered two shots on the attempts and nothing past Snyder. Perhaps her biggest play of the game was in the 46th minute when she successfully defended against a two-on-one breakaway from Hanover. “The defense played amazing,” Brooks said. “We have three seniors on our defensive line: Kylee Maiolo, Audrey Parks and Katie Corbitt and of course Gatlin in goal. Gatlin had some amazing saves. They didn’t test her big time, but when they did shoot, her saves were huge. Kylee Maiolo is super athletic and knows where the ball is.”

Overall, Brooks said that she was really happy with how the team performed. “It definitely passed my expectations, the way they played,” she said. “We talked about how they had to go to the ball. They went above and beyond.” Rehme said that she felt the team was communicating on the field better than ever before, which was a key part of their win over Hanover, as well as for their continued success for the season ahead. “I feel like we talked and encouraged each other more than we even touched the ball,” she said. “That really helped us. We really connected as a team and that brought us together. We knew where everyone was going to be because we practiced that. We’ve been working on higher intensity. That’s what’s going to win you games when it’s late in the game and it’s zero to zero. You have to know where everyone is.” Billy Fellin may be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com on on Twitter at @BillyFellin.

got on the board early in the fourth with a fouryard touchdown run. A two-point attempt and an ensuing onside kick attempt both failed, and Broadwater Academy trailed 19-6. The Knights responded with a knockout blow,

driving down the field in seven plays before senior Dion Butler scored from six yards out. The extra point was converted to put the Knights up 26-6. A late fumble recovery was returned for a touchdown by the Vikings, but the outcome

Indians golf grabs home win over Fluvanna Sports Editor

Powhatan golf grabbed its first win of the season on Aug. 30 at Mill Quarter Golf Course against Jefferson District foe Fluvanna 174-183. Kory Brown led the Indians with a six-over 42, which was also the lowest score of any golfer in the match. Connor Vorhees was just one stroke behind his teammate with a sevenover 43. Blair McAteer fell in line with an eight-over 44 and Madison Herring shot a nine-over 45 to round out the four scorers for the Indians. Justin Warner was the low score of the day for the Flucos, matching McAteer’s 44. Ethan Yancey shot a 45, Jarred Williams shot a 46 and Joe Pace was at a 12-over 48 for Fluvanna. “I was very happy with the way we played,” Powhatan golf coach Chris Leech wrote in an email. “We’re definitely starting to reach our potential as a team.” Leech wrote that one key behind the win was his team was “avoided the

Starting from the Trojans’ 28-yard line, the Indians quickly struck again on a 10-yard run by Taylor, who totaled 161 yards for the game. Junior quarterback Jacob Moss ran up the middle for a successful twopoint conversion to put Powhatan up 14-0. The momentum continued for Powhatan, as the ensuing Midlothian drive was halted on third down when senior Ben Nowacki came down with an interception for the Indians. After a Powhatan three-and-out, the Indians’ fortunes shifted quickly. Trojans running back Mac Whitten gashed Powhatan’s defense for an 80-yard touchdown run right up the middle, cutting Midlothian’s deficit to 14-7. “Defensively, we gave up several big plays. When we hung in there and made them drive, we ended up stopping them,” Powhatan head coach Jim Woodson said. “We took some chances and blitzed. We couldn’t stop them so we tried to do some stunts and some blitzes, and they picked the blocks up and caught us.” Things got worse for the Indians as Jacob Moss was picked off on the first play of their next drive. However, the pendulum swung back towards Powhatan just three plays later when junior Collin Lawson recovered a fumble as the first quarter came to a close. A scoreless second quarter featured drives that stalled around midfield for both teams, often aided by penalties. Midlothian started the second half with the ball and capitalized on it, scoring on a 16-yard run. However, the extra point attempt was blocked by the Indians to keep them ahead at 14-13.

big numbers.” “The team played a good, steady round and the scores reflected that,” he wrote. Brown got his round started off with a birdie on Mill Quarter’s No. 1 hole. While he followed that up with a double-bogey, he rebounded with a par on the third hole. Brown then triple-bogeyed the par-4 fifth hole and bounced back with a birdie on the sixth hole. While he bogeyed two out of the final three holes, they were only one shot over par, keeping his score consistent. “Kory Brown’s game is really coming along,” Leech wrote. Vorhees also shot an even-keeled round for the Indians. He shot for par on the first and eighth holes, and while he did bogey every other hole, none of them were more than one shot over the par for that hole. Vorhees is a freshman who has impressed Leech with his play thus far this season. “He has really stepped up as a freshman starter,” Leech wrote. McAteer had just two bad holes, on No. 3 and

No. 5, when he shot twoover. He shot par on No. 1, No. 7 and No. 8 and was just one-over on the other holes. Warner was three-over on the par-4 second hole, but evened out his results over the final seven holes, with three pars and just one hole, the eighth, when he went two-over. Herring started the match two-over, was oneover on all but the seventh hole, which she scored a par on, and the ninth, which was a two-over result also. Leech wrote that the win is a pretty big confidence boost for the team going forward in their season. “Definitely gives us a boost going into the rest of the season,” he wrote. “We have a tough match with Albemarle coming up and then our focus will be on Orange and the district tournament.” The match with the Patriots is scheduled for Sept. 13, with the district tournament five days later. Powhatan’s last regular season match is slated for Sept. 20 at Orange prior to the sub-regional tourna-

After an exchange of punts, disaster struck for the Indians when a Moss pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown, putting the Trojans up 2014. Powhatan bounced back quickly, starting with an electrifying kickoff return by junior Brendan McMullin out to the Indians’ 49-yard line. A methodical drive took them down to the two-yard line, where Taylor scored once again. A successful extra point put Powhatan up 21-20 after three quarters. The Indians’ defense came through once again to start the fourth quarter. With the Trojans facing a third down inside the Powhatan red zone, junior Gavin Clark came up with a sack that cost Midlothian eight yards. The Trojans’ field goal attempt on the following play was no good, giving the ball back to the Indians on downs. After another Powhatan punt, Midlothian struck a damaging blow, scoring on a 48-yard run down the left sideline. A two-point attempt was no good, but Midlothian led 26-21 with just over two minutes to play. The Indians were able to drive out to midfield on their final drive, but were bogged down by pressure on the offensive line. A sack of Moss on a penalty-inflicted first-and-long put Powhatan well behind the sticks and created a hole they ultimately couldn’t dig out of. “We made some mistakes in pass protection. We were getting sacked on three-step drops, trying to throw it quickly and get it away and we couldn’t do it,” Woodson said. “At the end they knew we were going to throw, so they could just pin their ears back and start coming.”

Woodson acknowledged that his inexperienced team did show some promising signs: “When we got down, we came back and got ahead. I was proud of that. It’s hard to keep coming back like that, but there are fixable things. We just have to keep working hard.” Powhatan will look to bounce back and get their first win when they face Caroline on the road on Sept. 8. Should the Indians win against the Cavaliers, it would be a momentous occasion as coach Woodson would tie Roger Brookes of King William/ Henrico for the most wins by a Richmond-area head football coach. According to the records by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Woodson has 273 wins. If Powhatan does defeat Caroline, then Woodson would have the chance to break the record at home against Hopewell on Sept. 15. Powhatan Today Sports Editor Billy Fellin contributed to this report.

ment in the new VHSL format. Leech wrote that there are a few things he’d like to see cleaned up as the season winds down and

the playoffs approach. “I still want us to tighten up around the green,” he wrote. “If we can save strokes there, it’ll give us a good chance

of beaching some other teams in the district.” Billy Fellin may be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter at @BillyFellin.

Powhatan’s Jordan Davis (2) sends a shot over the net past two Midlothian defenders during the 3-0 loss to the Trojans on Aug. 28. It is the second time in the last two matches on their home court that Powhatan has lost to Midlothian.

Errors costly for Indians against Midlo By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Last November, the Midlothian Trojans marched into Powhatan High School’s gym and finessed their way to the Conference 20 title. On Aug. 28, Powhatan and Midlothian met once again on the Indians home court and, once again, Midlothian finessed their way past Powhatan in a 2515, 25-9, 25-19 win. While the Trojans did at times outplay Powhatan, finding holes in the Indians defense with soft hits, pushes and being able to put the ball exactly where the Powhatan defense wasn’t, the Indians committed many self-inflicted wounds during the match “The first 11 points of the first set were phenomenal and this last set was decent, coach Amber Foos said. “But, it was the errors. We were all in the same gym tonight. The lineup was fine. They were fine with the lineup, but they were giving up too many points and committing too many errors. You just can’t do that. As Foos pointed out, the first 11 points of the first set were back and forth and showed the Indians moxie and ability to battle with any team on any court. A kill from Powhatan’s Sierra Ellison and an ace from Lauren Llewellyn started a four-point run for the Indians to start the game. Midlothian battled back to make it 64 before back-to-back Trojan errors tied the match. Katie Henderson tied the game for Powhatan at 7-7 with a kill, followed by Jordan Davis scoring a point and an error from Midlothian to put it at 9-7 Indi-

ans. Midlothian battled back to make it 99, then 10-10 and 11-11 after a service error. From then on, however, the errors started stacking up for the Indians. Midlothian went on an eight-point burst, with five of those eight points coming off Powhatan miscues. Abby Nee stopped the bleeding with a kill to make the score 20-11, but the Indians would only score four more points the rest of the first set. The second set was one that the Indians won’t want to remember anytime soon. Abby Nee started the set with an ace, but the errors reared their ugly heads once again as Midlothian started to roll. After a Midlothian service error put the game at 2-1 for Powhatan, the Trojans scored 10 straight points, with five coming off Powhatan errors and two aces by the Trojans. Powhatan recorded two aces in the set and a kill from Abby Nee put the score at 15-9, but then things got out of hand as Midlothian went on a 10-0 run to close out the set. Set three saw Powhatan race out to a 6-0 lead, spurred by two aces from Llewellyn and kills from Davis and Rachel Mueller. The Indians held the lead for most of the first half of the third set, holding the Trojans relatively at bay. But, a kill gave the Trojans the lead at 20-19, and then three Powhatan errors gave three of the final five points to Midlothian to end the game. “We adjusted to them, Foos said. “Any hit over the net they had out of 10 hits, maybe three or four were legit. My

defense was where they were supposed to be. You know what killed us? The area between the net and the 10-foot-line‌.the short game. That’s something we’ve gone over and over. We switched our defense up a little bit tonight and adjusted to what they were putting out. It worked. But, we’re still not where we need to be.â€? The defeat should serve as a wake-up call to the Indians, Foos said. “We should have beaten them,â€? she said. “I think they’re going to come out and hopefully we’ll see a big change for them.â€? On Sept. 1 and 2, the Indians participated in the annual Virginia Volleyball
