OWHATAN – The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation into the fatal shooting of a Powhatan man that occurred the night of Monday, Sept. 11 at a local body shop. Dana Burdick, 35,
was slain during a domestic incident involving several family members at Murphy’s Body Shop, which is in the 3700 block of Anderson Highway, said Capt. Jeff Searfoss with the Sheriff’s Office. Burdick did not own or work at the shop, Searfoss said. Searfoss emphasized on Tuesday, Sept. 12 that the public was not in any
danger. The Powhatan commonwealth’s attorney’s office is reviewing the incident to see whether criminal charges are appropriate, Searfoss said. The state medical examiner’s office is also assisting with the investigation, he added. The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m., and emergency personnel

POWHATAN – With Powhatan County Public Schools in the final year of implementation of its 2013-2018 Six Year Plan, the school district is not only evaluating the progress it has made but making preparations to create a new plan to carry it into the future. The Powhatan County School Board heard its annual presentation on the six year plan during its workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 12. But since it is the final year of the plan, the district is forming a committee to begin drafting a new plan. Dr. Tracie Omohundro, assistant superintendent for instruction, made the presentation to the board, outlining goals that had been set in the current plan, which has been updated multiple times, and objectives and strategies related to the goals. In her presentation, she took a look at the overall strategies that the school district had, its progress, how many objectives have been accomplished, how many are still ongoing, and how many have been eliminated so far during the process. The Strategic Plan Steering Committee will meet three to four times to update the district’s mission, vision, and beliefs as a school division and set goals for the next six years. New road construction project begins on Carter Gallier Boulevard Roadway will act as a parallel to Route 60 Contributed Report
W
eather permitting, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews were scheduled to begin work on a project to construct a new roadway on Carter Gallier Boulevard (Route 1343) in Powhatan County on Sunday, Sept. 17. The purpose of the project is to provide a roadway on new alignment to connect Anderson Highway (Route 60), Page Road (Route 675) and the Luck Stone entrance. This new roadway is in alignment with the Powhatan County long range plan to construct a parallel road to Route 60. The estimated cost of the project will be $5.6 million. The work is expected to be complete in summer 2018. The new roadway will begin on Route 60 at the Virginia
State Police crossover and run northwest approximately 2,900 feet and terminate at the intersection of the Luck Stone entrance approximately 1,320 feet north of Route 60. The total project length is approximately 0.55 miles. The new roadway will include two 12-foot travel lanes with 8-foot shoulders, 4-foot paved shoulders for pedestrian and bicycle accommodations and 6-foot ditches. A right turn lane will also be included on Route 60 at the new intersection with Carter Gallier Boulevard. It will consist of a 12-foot lane with a 10-foot shoulder and a 10 foot ditch. Drivers can expect daytime single lane closures on Route 60 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Other traffic impacts will include an approximately 10-day detour (to be scheduled) on Page Road while the new intersection is being constructed. For more information about the project, visit http://www. virginiadot.org/projects/richmond/carter_gallier.asp.

Communitybased organizations like the Y provide the needed guidance to

O B I T UA R I E S BARBARA ALLEY Barbara (Wright) Alley, 81, of Amelia, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones, after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Barbara was born November 15, 1935, in Ivanhoe. She was a graduate of George Wythe High School. She married the love of her life and hometown sweetheart, Richard Alley Sr., on October 8, 1955, and ALLEY shortly after moved to Richmond, where they had two children, Sherry and Richard Jr. (Ricky). She came from humble beginnings, but had a brilliant mind. Instead of going to the local high school she opted to attend a specialty high school where they offered business classes. She excelled in typing and the lost art of shorthand. She worked for various companies in Richmond and eventually retired from Union Camp. Barbara loved the color blue, Cherished Teddy Bears and The Atlanta Braves. She was passionate about her family and was a natural caregiver as she was her mother’s sole caregiver for over 20 years. Her true joy in life was when she became a grandmother. If ever a person was meant to be a grandmother, Barbara was that person. There wasn’t a graduation, wedding or birth she missed and it was her last wish to attend her youngest granddaughter’s upcoming wedding at the end of September. In recent years she had the privilege of becoming a great-grandmother. If you met her you loved her- simple as that. She was selfless, kind, loving and an incredible listener. Barbara is survived by her two children, Sherry Beran (Danny) of Powhatan and Richard Alley Jr. (Susan) of Amelia; five grandchildren, Kristin Krupp (Bryan) of Powhatan, Casie Woodfin (William) of Midlothian, Benjamin Beran (Jamie) of Powhatan, Joseph Beran of Chesterfield, and Nicole Alley (Donnie) of Amelia; great-grandchildren, Jacob Beran, Anders Krupp and Alley Woodfin; sister-inlaw, Mickey Alley; and special niece, Sharon Thompson (Mark); and great-nieces, Carolyn, Lydia and Christina Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Alley Sr.; her mother, Gertrude Wright; her father, Harold Wright; and her brother, Jackie Wright. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Lung Association. The family would like to thank Lisa and Jerry Morgan, Dr. Sarna and James River Hospice for their extraordinary care. A viewing was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 14 at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home in Amelia. A service was held at noon on Friday, September 15 at Hillsman-Hix in Amelia. Following the funeral, a burial service was held in the Chapel of Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
HELYNE BRIGGS-MINOR Helyne Grace Briggs-Minor, 75, of Powhatan entered her eternal resting place with God on Monday, September 4, 2017. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p. m. on Wednesday, September 13 at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road in Midlothian, where funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 14. Then I just felt compelled to express my gratitude to Faith Counts,” he said. Rivera’s video, which is called “Common Thread,” is now showcased on the group’s website at faithcounts. com. Rivera previously said his video was trying to remind people who watch it that faith matters in all aspects of our lives, all the way from the promise of new life to the fear of losing life. It was a reminder to let God be in all aspects of your life, both big and small, he added. “I think they will be reminded that God wants to be more than a creed or a passing thought but instead the anchor

His greatest accomplishment was being the world’s best “Papa.” Jim retired from DuPont, where he received numerous awards and recognition for his dedicated career as an instrument engineer. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a combat air crewman. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at Passion Community Church, 4480 Anderson Highway, Powhatan, VA 23139. DAVID ROWAN David R.Rowan, 63, of Powhatan, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Janice N. Rowan; his son, John David Rowan (Jennifer) of Chesterfield; one sister, Kathy Hooley of Emporia; three brothers, Richard Rowan of Chesterfield, Michael Rowan and Timothy Rowan, both of North Carolina. The family received ROWAN friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 15, in the Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ, 3137 Walmsley Blvd., N. in our lives. That is what I am hoping they will take away from the video,” he said when he was a finalist. Rivers said he makes videos for family members, and when he learned about the video contest, he saw it as an opportunity to show his take on faith. “We all tend to, in times of crisis or highs, kind of pray to something or someone, so I think this is kind of a way to show them that they’re not alone. We’re all kind of connected,” he said. Rivera said he used both historical footage and video that he shot, including parts with his wife, Angela, and two young sons, Eli and Isaac. More than 200 videos from around the nation were submitted to the second annual Faith Counts video contest and narrowed down with much difficulty by a committee to the top 10, said Troup, who helped with the initial selection process. She added they were really pleased with both the number of entries and the quality of the entries. “We looked for it to showcase faith in a positive light. That is the most important thing. He did that in a really beautiful way. It was original, it was creative and I would say it was very moving in the sense of the message of the video,” Troup said. Sister Neill F. Marriott of the Young Women general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was one of the faith leaders who judged the video contest finalists to
choose the final winners. “They were gorgeous and moving. I had a really hard time voting on any one of the 10 of them. They all presented faith, which is what I wanted to hear, in different modes from rap to nature to heartfelt decisions,” Marriott said. Rivera said he had the chance during the special dinner to speak to a few of the judges and found the experience gratifying because they told him not only that they enjoyed his video but that it provoked a great deal of emotions. The trip was made even more special because it was the weekend closest to his wife’s birthday, so an all-expenses paid trip to Nashville was the perfect gift, he said. Added to that is the blessing of the $20,000 prize. Rivera said some will go to savings, a small part will be used to further his videography, and he and his wife also want to donate part of it and are deciding on the recipient. Rivera said that being named the grand prize winner has given him a great deal of confidence in his videography and potentially opened up new opportunities. “Getting a chance to meet the wonderful group of people at Faith Counts really was encouraging. I met a lot of great people and I am still continuing to meet a lot of great people,” he said. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

Donation to Feedmore benefits the hungry BJ’s Wholesale Club announced a $100,000 donation from the BJ’s Charitable Foundation to FeedMore, a Feeding America® member food bank located in Central Virginia, on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The donation will help FeedMore’s network of partner agencies increase their capacity to distribute perishable food across the region. In total, FeedMore’s programs and network of more than 300 partner agencies provide more than 52,000 meals each day to neighbors in need. Powhatan County is one of the 34 counties and cities across Central Virginia that will benefit from this donation. With BJ’s $100,000 grant, FeedMore will purchase equipment, including freezers, refrigerators, and an external refrigerated storage unit to expand its cold storage capacity and increase the distribution of perishable foods. Additionally, FeedMore will use the grant to purchase a refrigerated truck for one of its partner agencies, which will increase the agency’s ability to accept more perishable food and safely transport it. BJ’s grant to FeedMore is part of the foundation’s $1 million donation to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. FeedMore is one of nine local food banks to benefit from BJ’s $1 million donation, which is the foundation’s
largest single donation to any organization to date. “BJ’s is bringing a fresh approach to nourishing communities and helping families thrive, and we’re proud to support FeedMore,” said Kirk Saville, executive director of the BJ’s Charitable Foundation. “No one should have to worry about where to get their next meal, and we know that food banks face challenges in storing and distributing perishable foods. Our strategic partnership with Feeding America is focused on building capacity for fresh food at local food banks so we can work together to put an end to hunger in our communities.” From the Northern Neck to Louisa County and south to the North Carolina border, FeedMore distributed 19.2 million meals last year through its programs and partners to Central Virginians who face hunger. “One in seven Central Virginians is food insecure, meaning that nearly 200,000 of our neighbors are not receiving the necessary nutrition,” said Doug Pick, chief executive officer at FeedMore. “Because of BJ’s generous donation, FeedMore will be able to provide our neighbors in need with healthy meals, nourishment and hope for a better tomorrow.” Since 2009, BJ’s has provided ongoing support to Feeding America through the BJ’s Charitable Foundation and BJ’s Feeding Communities®

Fortunately, Reyes, which is the last name he uses, not only survived but thrived during the couple’s last six years in Powhatan County, building a life with his wife and a successful teaching career, starting at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School and now with Powhatan County Public Schools. His current position is at Pocahontas Middle School, where he teaches Spanish language and culture to energetic seventh and eighth grade students. Shrewsberry is PCPS’ department head of world languages and teaches Spanish 3, ACA Spanish, and AP Spanish. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, Reyes stood in a courtroom in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Virginia and swore the oath that made him a naturalized citizen of the Unite States. It was an exciting and intense time, he said. “That day 67 voices from many different countries were present such as India, China, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, Dominican Republic, Mexico to Spain swearing in unison to renounce ‘fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty’ and ‘to support and defend the Constitution

As a group, the men and women present finished their oath with “So help me God.” Then Reyes shook hands with the judge and received his citizenship certificate. “I thought about the idea of being an American citizen since a long time ago. When he was 10, his parents enrolled him in the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Musica Manuel de Falla, which is in Cadiz. He finished elementary music studies, specialized in piano performance and later earned a Master’s Degree in music education. parents, sister, dear friends, and neighbors to watch him swear the oath. The future citizens and their families sat on separate sides of the courtroom and were called up individually to turn in their green cards and paperwork before the judge came out and swore them in as a group. Reyes was the last one in the group, No. 67, to go up and hand in his paperwork. “It was such a joyous day full of emotion,” she said. Unbeknownst to Reyes, what he thought was going to be a small get together after the ceremony to celebrate actually was a surprise party. Shrewsberry said she came to realize the depth of importance of the celebration of this milestone in her husband’s life. “José Luis is all alone here in this country on a day-to-day basis aside from my parents and myself. I know how José Luis feels – I know how it feels to yearn for your family who loves you infinitely,” she said. “I understand the feeling of being in a place unfamiliar from your own country; the distance exacerbates the feeling because you can’t just hop in your car and drive. “Each and every one of those people who came to the party made José Luis feel so special and loved; they embraced him from the moment we came to Powhatan. I can’t express the gratitude that I have to all of those who not only came to the ceremony and/or the party, but to everyone in general who knows and loves Jose Luis,” she added.

exploratory Spanish for elementary school students and adults, and a music program in piano performing under the supervision of Dr. Tracy Bonday. For the past three years, he has served in PCPS as a certified Spanish K-12 teacher and world languages teacher. “I feel proud of teaching my native language and think that adding a personal touch from what I learned where I grew up can be very positive for our students,” he said. “I am firmly dedicated to the education of our students in Powhatan, and I believe that adding authentic language practice and cultural connection from my country will help in some way our students to open their eyes to become world citizens.” Shrewsberry said she was somewhat taken aback when her husband first told her he wanted to become a naturalized American citizen because she didn’t know he had been entertaining the idea. The process took him a year and many hours studying civics, American history and language. “He would take the packet with him to the gym and be on the elliptical studying. He would also have me quiz him at home or in the car. He knew those questions forwards and backwards,” his wife said. “When José Luis puts his mind to something he does it. I admire his perseverance and diligence in all that he does; he’s really living the American dream. We are all so very proud of him.” The day her husband became a citizen, Shrewsberry was there with her

unsustainable high GDP growth rate, he added. Shrewsberry was also missing her family and her country, and Reyes said he felt that it was time to come to the United States and “explore new avenues to pursue our happiness.” “That was one of the most important decisions that I’ve ever made. I could not imagine myself living 4,000 miles apart from my folks and from my historic city, Cadiz,” he said. The process of applying for a permanent resident green card to come to the United States took close to one year, and included numerous trips to the American Embassy in Madrid, Reyes said. “It was a long process with interviews, preparing documentation, doctor appointments and some of my savings. I can tell from my experience that it was not easy to come to the States doing the right things, and I truly respect the way in which the government of the United States handles this process,” he said.

trajectory of Reyes’ life changed in the summer of 2006. It was then he met Shrewsberry, who was visiting friends in Spain, where she had previously studied abroad. She met Reyes briefly one day and then saw him by chance the next. “I thought to myself ‘wow, what a coincidence. I would love to get to know this guy.’ And it was love at first sight!” Shrewsberry said. Reyes, who said their story was like a fairy tale, said it had to be their destiny to be in the same place at the same time. “She already had a flight ticket to come back home the week after we met. I convinced her to stay one more month. I’m sure my father-in-law wasn’t happy at all,” he said. The couple dated long distance for two years before Shrewsberry ultimately made the decision to move to Spain, believing it would be a permanent move, and arriving in 2009. She applied for a visa and taught English to all ages, and the couple married in 2010. “I was feeling unsure of myself because I had never done anything extreme like that. I also felt like I was uprooting myself because I had just started teaching in Virginia Beach. Most of all I dreaded leaving my parents,” she said. During their last year living overseas, the economic situation of Spain known as the Great Recession started getting worse, Reyes said. The main cause of Spain’s crisis was the housing bubble and the accompanying

mittee meeting will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 at Powhatan High School, 1800 Judes Ferry Road. People who are interested in serving on either committee may fill out the application linked on the main page of the PCPS website at www. powhatan.k12.va.us/ home. Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, said the school district has been soliciting community participation for the committee to ensure it has a group that represents all of the county’s magisterial districts and is made up of staff, parents, and people representing outside agencies that may be connected to the schools. The committee will be in charge of setting the direction for a recommendation to the school board of what the new six year plan will look like, Jones said. This will include updating the mission and the vision and identifying the goals. “We will then take those goals as a staff primarily and talk about how we are going to meet those goals and underneath it have action plans or objectives ‌ that we will then bring back to the steering committee for approval from that group in the spring before we bring it back to the board,â€? Jones said. The school district will also ask for feedback from the communi-
ty at large throughout the process, he pointed out, so it won’t only be steering committee members who have input into the document.
Overall strategies The first goal in the existing plan was that all students will achieve their academic potential in order to graduate from high school and obtain success in college, the workforce, and/or military. However, that goal included several objectives. Within that goal, the district focused on developing and maintaining an instructional program; meeting or exceeding all benchmarks for state accreditation and federal annual measurable objectives; providing problem-based learning opportunities for students to learn through active, hands-on investigations; providing a variety of instructional technology tools and training for teachers and students, and refining organization and budget operations to ensure academic excellence for all students. Omohundro gave several examples of how the district approached the objectives. One example was creating DL421 (Deeper Learning for the 21st Century), which is an instructional framework created by a team of teachers, specialists and administrators to guide K-12 instruction. Teachers use the it as a foundation for implementing their curriculum to help achieve four out-
comes: communication and collaboration, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving, and digital fluency. Other strategies included: adding honors electives and additional career and technical education (CTE) offerings; working to have all schools fully accredited; implementing PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) as part of the Virginia Tiered System of Supports in grades six to eight; revising the assessment map to reflect current instructional needs; participating in the regional STEM high school, CodeRVA; having targeted field trips; implementing a one-toone Chromebook program at the high school; having computer carts on wheels at the elementary schools; offering an online teaching and learning course to teachers; increasing accessibility for the division and school websites, and streamlining staff at the division’s central office and middle school administration to place more resources in the schools. The second goal is about making sure students are learning from and interacting with high quality professionals, Omohundro said. Strategies for that goal included holding the first Powhatan Strong Hiring Fair;
implementing the Perfect Presence attendance incentive program; creating Pump You Up monthly institutes for new teachers; using the full instructional team for one-to-one DL421 instructional conversations with all teachers, and increasing minority staffing so it better
matches the student population. The district now has minorities in place in 9 percent of teaching staff and 12.5 percent of all staff, which matches 12.5 percent of the student population belonging to a minority group. The third goal was making sure student learn in a safe, clean, and
positive school environment. Strategies for this goal included installing a more robust component to Identikid sign-in system; installing new entrance video camera at the high school; building a bus garage / maintenance facility that is almost complete, and implementing a new see SCHOOLS, pg. 6

Rick Cole, who represents District 1, commended the staff on how much they have accomplished. Going forward, he asked them to make it clearer where the division’s accomplishments
fit in its six year plan to better illustrate the progress that is being made. Jones agreed and said one of the targets for the new six year plan will be making sure the goals are measurable and that the success of the objectives can be easily identified. Dreading the gray ghost’s arrival By Laura McFarland News Editor
F
ind a gray hair, pluck it out, all the day you’ll wonder if that myth about two coming back in its place is really true. I got my first gray hair a few years ago, in my early 30s. I don’t remember exactly when; it’s probably a traumatic memory I blocked out. Not really, of course, but I do remember being startled. Even knowing gray hair isn’t necessarily a state of being limited to advanced age didn’t take away the shock of seeing that first pigment-challenged strand at what I thought was still a pretty young age. Life went on. Every once in a while I would be brushing my hair or attempting to style it and the light would catch on a strand that didn’t match my natural shade of brown. Upon closer inspection, the strand would reveal itself not to be, as I had wished, bleached blonde by the kiss of the sun. It was, without a doubt, a gray hair. Months would go by between these incidents. My reaction followed a pattern: isolate the problem, extract it with extreme prejudice and dispose of the evidence. The rogue strands always seemed to originate near the same general area of my head. Is there a way to quarantine this section before there is a real outbreak? This is an actual question I found myself thinking. Yes, it’s nonsensical, but I have never claimed to be without my foibles. The incidents have been coming with less space
in between, which, of course, makes me contemplate my status even more. It’s a little late to exactly fit the definition of premature graying but it feels like it to me. It could have been worse. My mother tells me her mother got a white streak in her hair at age 18. My mother and sisters started noticing gray hairs in their early to mid 20s. By that reckoning, I had a reprieve for a good number of years before the gray ghost made its first appearance to me. With the increased reminders comes the question of what, if anything, do I plan to do about it? Do I want to resign myself to the inevitability of growing older and embrace the gray as well as the possible label of having “salt and pepper hair” as it becomes more noticeable? Going gray gracefully, I believe it is called. I’ve heard many women find it liberating. Or do I choose to “not go gentle into that good night”? Should I start haunting the hair color aisle at the grocery store to begin matching the exact shade of my brown locks? My oldest sister claims her gray hair is extremely color resistant, so that could be an issue. I don’t have the answers yet but I haven’t given up hope. I’ll have to chalk it up to being one of those BIG questions I want to solve someday but don’t yet have the knowledge of how to do it, such as how to achieve world peace and how to convince everyone once and for all that the correct position for toilet paper is to be pulled over, not under. Shadow of a storm lingers on By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
When a wave of low pressure first appeared off the Cape Verde coast of Africa more than two weeks ago, no one paid it much notice. But less than three days later, the storm had a name, and forecasters in the United States began to pay closer attention to a hurricane named Irma. But, for most of us, it was still just an item in the news. Even for the many who have relatives and friends in Florida, it didn’t seem that serious, and we’ve learned to live with the threat of an occasional Atlantic storm that reaches hurricane strength. Days after it formed, Irma began a path of destruction through the Caribbean, and set its sights on the Florida Keys. National news outlets began fulltime coverage of the storm, and photos of long lines of automobiles exiting the narrow strip of bridges and islands alerted the less novice of the impending doom. I didn’t need the reaffirmation of what a hurricane can do when it hits a small group of islands that some call paradise, and many more now call home. Decades earlier, I’d stood at a small memorial on Upper Matecumbe Key and read the tributes to the more than 400 people who died in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. A cement crypt located near the monument contains the cremated remains of more than 200 of its victims, a somber reminder of the fury that lurks only yards away from the memorial. Weather forecasts didn’t name storms in those days, but the Labor Day hurricane didn’t need one to be remembered as the strongest hurricane to ever hit the Florida Keys, with recorded winds of 185 mph and storm surges more than 20 feet. Islamorada was a different place in the mid1930s, sparsely populated and undeveloped. The islands were dotted with WPA work camps manned by World War I veterans who found work building the Overseas Highway and other infrastructure on the Keys. Warnings of the impending storm came too late to evacuate the workers, and many were forced to face the wind and rain in temporary shelters or tents. A train was sent from Miami to rescue the veterans, but the wind from the storm blew it off the tracks near Matacumbe Key. While people still remember the great Galveston storm as the most devastating regarding the loss of
human life, the Labor Day storm of 1935 claimed almost half of the then population of the middle keys and destroyed what we now know as Islamorada. It’s still unknown the true extent of the damage Irma caused to the Florida Keys, but its path up the western coast of Florida is well documented and cleanup will be long and arduous for Floridians hit by the storm. That possibility hit close to home as the storm headed for Tampa. My sister, her children and grandchildren live in the greater Tampa area, so my concern for what was being described as a storm of epic proportion headed for the flood-prone area was heightened. I called and tried to convince her to move northward and come to Richmond to ride out the storm, but she felt the solid construction and hurricaneproof windows on her home would provide a safe refuge from the storm. Despite my best efforts, she decided to stay. Next morning, I learned the whole family was on the move, evacuated and on the way to an unknown destination preferably far away from the attacking storm. They ended up sheltering in Myrtle Beach until the storm passed Tampa and caused less damage than originally anticipated. We won’t know the true cost of Irma for days or weeks, and some communities will take years to rebuild and reclaim their portion of the Florida dream. For me, watching day after day of bumper-tobumper traffic exiting the state to avoid Hurricane Irma is a somber reminder that paradise is never guaranteed and living near a tropical oasis has a price. Thousands of Floridians are feeling that pinch as they begin to file back into the state, my sister included. The next few days of brilliant sunshine and cool ocean breezes will make the memories of Irma fade, but the reality of what could be is forever planted in a sense of security that is only as solid as the weather forecast. They’ll face the cleanup with what has been described as “Florida spirit” accompanied with a cautious sense of optimism. The evacuated returnees know there’s one out there somewhere in the future, bigger and stronger, just waiting to aim its fury on the Sunshine State. 3829 Old Buckingham Rd. L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Resident seeks to show hate is not welcome here Dear Editor, Like many among us, I am still struggling to reckon with what happened in Charlottesville on August 11 and 12. After that weekend, I began to feel that the often referred-to “divide” between Americans is actually more of a chasm. As a Christian, I understand that the only way healing can occur is through love, but I struggled to come up with a way that I could tackle a problem so big, and so ugly. I’m just one person. I’m not as brave as those students surrounding the Jefferson statue that Friday night in August or, on the following Saturday, the parishioners and clergy of St. Paul’s Memorial or Congregation Beth Israel. Or Heather Heyer. So, of course, I did what any 30-something might do when faced with a question to which I didn’t know the answer – I asked Google (and prayed). I found a nonprofit called The Hate Has No Home Here Project. This is a non-partisan project that seeks to declare neighborhood residences, businesses, and places of community free from hate speech and behavior, providing safe places for conversation, work, learning, and living. Let me be clear: this is not about politics, and it is not about statues. We will never agree on everything politically, and we shouldn’t expect to. But we can agree, together, that hate has no place in our community, our state, or our country. I started with 50 signs. You may have seen one. They say, “Hate Has No Home Here” in six languages, and have an American flag within a heart. They are red on one side, and blue on the other. To my surprise, all 50 were snapped up and placed out by our neighbors here in Powhatan. And now I have received orders for 125 more. It’s my hope that, by putting these signs up across our community, we can realize that we have more in common than we think. We can start an honest dialogue about our past and what we want for the future. We can help our neighbors who might feel isolated or fearful after those horrific couple of days in Charlottesville feel a little bit safer and less alone. That’s my hope. If you would like to join me, either by putting up a sign or by starting a conversation, please contact me at HHNHH.Powhatan@ gmail.com. Allison Dunaway Powhatan County

Winter garden preparations
Drive-in at the library PHOTO BY LAURA MCFARLAND
Vroom, vroom. A roaring good time was had by all during the first family drive in movie at the Powhatan County Public Library on Sept, 9. Members of the PCPL Teen Advisory Creative Organization (TACO) assembled and decorated the cars for young drive-in visitors. A free family “drive-in” movie is being held at noon on the second Saturday of each month in the Children’s Activity Room this fall. For the Oct. 14 movie, organizers plan to either add a few cars for the older children or at least cut holes in the front of the existing boxes for longer legs.

It is happening…the days are shorter, the morning air is crisper, the insects have quieted, the night temperatures have dropped. Fall is creeping in, and the bountiful harvest of summer veggies is slowing. Lucky for us that Richmond’s temperate climate allows for five good months of outdoor gardening! But, wouldn’t it be great if we could extend the growing season into the colder months? Think of all the yummy lettuces and arugula that you could harvest in the middle of the winter! This can easily be done using cold frames! These simply constructed “plant shelters” protect plants from wind, retain heat, and are a practical and easy way to extend the growing season. A 3-by-4-foot simply constructed bed of greens can provide many months’ worth of salads, mak-
ing nutritious eating possible almost year around. Fall is also the perfect time to improve your garden’s soil and help reduce next year’s insect and disease problems. It is the best time to plant a cover crop. Lots of different plants are suitable for this area. If you have never thought of using a cover crop as part of your garden management, you might want to try it this year. The result in the spring is soil with highly enriched organic matter, ready for successful planting. Many professionals have noted that it is quite remarkable to see the difference in soil that is managed with the purpose of building up organic material. For more information on cold frames and cover crops in your garden, contact your local county Virginia Cooperative Extension office: Goochland at 804-5565841 or Powhatan at 804-598-5640.

Powhatan County’s 4-H dairy judging team earned first place senior 4-H team in Virginia earlier this summer in Berryville. The youngest member on the team, Madelyn Adkins, also took first place overall honors for the junior team division. Coaches Johns Bailey and Steve Meadows worked with the team for the past months visiting dairy farms for handson training, as well as weekly classroom preparation. Bailey took many 4-H dairy judging teams to state and national competitions in the 70s as a local extension agent. Meadows was a student of Bailey’s and now has had the opportunity to coach with his mentor. Due to the high individual scores achieved by Powhatan’s senior team, they were all given the opportunity to qualify for the state 4-H dairy judging team. They began training with more competitions and will participate in the Junior Dairy Stockmen’s Contest at the State Fair of Virginia in September. They will travel to the Maryland State Fair in September, and Louisville, Kentucky, in November for the national dairy judging contest. SEC crews dispatched to aid Hurricane Irma victims Contributed Report More than 110 experienced line workers from electric cooperatives across Virginia and Maryland are aiding sister co-ops in Georgia and South Carolina working to restore power following Hurricane Irma. Crews from Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC), two linemen from each of the four districts, are aiding Ocmulgee
Electric Membership Corporation in Eastman, Georgia. As Hurricane Irma churned across the Caribbean and made landfall in the Florida Keys, distribution cooperative members of the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) activated mutual assistance plans to send line crews, trucks and supplies to areas experiencing widespread outages.
“Our sixth Cooperative Principle is ‘Cooperation Among Cooperatives,’ ” SEC vice president of operations Brad Furr explained. “Co-ops from those areas affected by Hurricane Irma have aided our members in times of need in the past, and it’s our turn to help get the lights back on for them. Our crews are prepared to assist our sister co-ops as long as we are needed.”
SEC linemen left on Tuesday, Sept. 12 for Georgia. couple decides to raise the child as their own, which has devastating consequences. This film is rated PG-13. Refreshments are provided, courtesy of the Friends of the Powhatan Library. Powhatan can’t handle No. 9 Hopewell By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
L
ast season, the Powhatan Indians pulled off an intense, come-from-behind win over Hopewell, which was ranked as the sixth-best team in the area by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Ross Lewis capped off a game-winning 90-plus yard drive and scored the
tying touchdown and Jacob Moss put the game-winning extra point through the uprights to defeat the Blue Devils in a game that would provide a huge momentum swing that carried through most of the season for the Indians. On Sept. 15 against the Blue Devils, ranked ninth in the area, there was no game-winning drive for the Indians, nor were there any heroics. Hopewell’s offense was red hot and the Indians defense could do little to
stop it in a 48-14 final at Powhatan High School. “I told (the team) that I thought everyone played hard,” Powhatan head coach Jim Woodson said. “Everyone played very hard and as a coach, that’s all I can ask of them.” Powhatan got off on the right foot against the Blue Devils. Hopewell received the opening kickoff and moved the ball down the field, but the Indians defense forced a rare
turnover from Indiana-bound Ronnie Walker on that first drive. Walker fumbled and Powhatan’s Brendan McMullin recovered it to stop the drive cold. McMullin played a large part of the first drive for the Indians as well, as he followed the fumble recovery up with an 18-yard run and converted on 3rd and 10 for 29 yards to put Powhatan inside see INDIANS, pg. 7B
Knights come from behind, but fall in five to Warriors By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
The first two sets didn’t paint a picture of a five-set thriller in the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot girls volleyball team’s home opener on Sept. 14. After dropping the first two sets, including the second set in which the Knights only scored nine points, the team roared back to win the next two sets to force the decisive fifth set. But, the charge toward set five fell short as the Warriors took the final set 15-8 and won the match in five by scores PHOTO BY BILLY FELLIN of 25-17, 25-9, 20-25, 23-25, 15-8. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Tori Flint (1) is in her first season as a libeKnights coach Janae Robinson said ro and had two key points to close out the fourth set for the Knights. that the run her team went on to force a
fifth set is emblematic of her team’s personality. “They start off really up and down,” she said. “You got to see how that happened (against Tidewater Academy.) It takes for them to get angry and for them to see that they’re losing for them to come up. It shouldn’t take for us to be losing for them to think ‘we have to win this game.’ We shouldn’t have gone five sets, but they picked up the energy.” The Knights rode a string of errors by the Warriors to jump out to a 4-1 lead to open the game. But, errors by Blessed Sacrament Huguenot allowed the Warriors to get right back into the game and kept them see KNIGHTS, pg. 2B

Powhatan’s Cullen Biringer sinks a putt at Mill Quarter Plantation on Sept. 13 against Albemarle.
Indians fall to Albemarle, district tournament ahead By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Powhatan’s golf team had its last home match of the season at Mill Quarter Plantation Golf Course on Sept. 13 and the Indians faced off with the Albemarle Patriots. Over the nine holes, the Patriots prevailed by a score of 159-182. Berke Wrenn led the Indians with a seven-over 43 on the day. Connor Voorhees and Cullen Biringer were both 10-over 46 and Madison Herring rounded out the low four for Powhatan with an 11-over 47. Against Albemarle, Wrenn got off to a strong start for the Indians. The number five golfer in the lineup, Wrenn shot even par over the first four holes, shooting four on hole number one and two and then a five on hole number three. He ran into trouble on the par-3 fourth, where he went three over. On the par-four fifth, Wrenn bogeyed, but shot par on the par 4 sixth and seventh. The par 3 eighth also gave Wrenn some issues as he shot two-over on that hole, and the bogeyed the final par 5.

within striking distance. Then, as would become a theme throughout the match, one of the Tidewater Academy servers got hot from the service line and scored three aces in a row to push the Warriors out to a 10-8 lead. A handful of errors by the Knights again allowed the Warriors lead to balloon and despite a kill from Amy Bonds and an ace from Anna Gestwick, two more aces from Tidewater Academy finished out the first set. In the second set, errors and more Tidewater Academy aces opened the flood gates early in the match as the Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Knights got on the board. All told, 10 points in the set were earned off aces for Tidewater Academy. The issue of returning serves is not an unknown issue for the Knights. “They have an issue with letting one server, it could be their strongest server, we have a hard time returning that ball back,” Robinson said. “They’re trying to just push the ball back over.
Voorhees had an up-and-down beginning to the match. He triple-bogeyed the par 4 first hole, and then got par on the second hole, also a par 4. The par 5 third hole also proved troublesome as he shot a seven. Voorhees was consistent the rest of the match, however, shooting one-over on the fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes, while he shot par on the par 4 sixth. Biringer also had issues with the first two holes, going a combined 5 over in that span. He shot par on the third and seventh holes, while he bogeyed the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth. Herring was 3 over after the first hole, but settled down after that as she bogeyed every hole, except the par 3 fourth, which she shot par on and the par 5 ninth hole which was a double bogey. Powhatan played in the Jefferson District tournament at Monticello’s home course on Sept. 19, which also serves as a warm-up for the Region B tournament later this month. The Indians will also travel to take on Orange on Sept. 20 in their final regular season match of the year.
But, when they get in that funk after three or four serves, they don’t know how to get out of it.” The issue reared its ugly head again in the opening of set three as Tidewater Academy jumped out to a 4-1 lead. But, the Knights battled back and scored an ace of their own to grab a 6-5 lead. The teams battled back and forth, trading the lead or being at a tied score 17 times after the 6-5 mark before the Knights grabbed a two-point lead off an ace from Gestwick. From that point on, the Knights had built a lead they would not relinquish and pushed the match to set four. In the fourth set, Tidewater Academy held the lead for much of the set, usually by never more than two or three points. The high water mark for the Warriors lead was five points, but two straight errors for Tidewater Academy brought the Knights back within striking distance. Kills from Tori Flint and Kate Hatfield, along with a point from Bonds, spurred a three-point run that brought the Knights within two points.
Back-to-back errors by the Warriors tied the game at 22, and then a service error tied it again at 23. Flint then had back-toback aces that sealed the set and sent the game to the fifth. The lead traded back and forth for the first seven points of the fifth set, but Tidewater Academy was able to outrace the Knights and forced errors on them which allowed for a lead to be built that would not be overcome. Gestwick had seven kills, four blocks and three aces, while Bonds had three digs and three blocks. It was the first week of the season and the Knights are looking to get rolling, according to Robinson. “I look forward to gaining some wins and finishing some wins out,” she said. “We need to learn how to finish. We need to keep that energy. If we can keep that energy throughout the entire match, we can win some games.” The Knights played on the road on Sept. 18 and at home on Sept. 19 and Sept. 22. Habitat golf tourney has raised $12k and counting By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
It is the 15th annual Habitat for Humanity Powhatan golf tournament. And, even before the first ball is driven down the fairway at Mill Quarter Plantation Golf Club on Sept. 22, it is already a great success. Executive director Tim Bowring said that as of Sept. 14, the tournament has raised $12,445 and the 70 golfers that are registered is more than the 2016 event. “It’s really great,” he said. “The support of the community is really mind blowing. I had never done this before. I was just reaching out to people who knew me, but many of whom did not. But, they did know about Powhatan Habitat.” Bowring said that the event is an example of how Habitat for Humanity works with the entire community. “Habitat for Humanity doesn’t work unless you involve the entire community,” he said. “You really need people to come together to support you financially, people to come together who don’t even know the home owner, maybe, and help build the house. It’s an amazing experience. It’s a daunting experience to build a house, but if you bring the entire community together around this, it’s actually a fairly easy thing to accomplish. You can radically change someone’s life.”
Bowring said the homes that are built through Habitat for Humanity benefit many members of the Powhatan community. In order to be eligible for a Habitat for Humanity house, candidates must have a clear need for affordable housing, have lived or worked in the county for at least one year, have acceptable credit, perform 200-300 sweat equity hours and have a gross annual income of $24,600-$61,900, according to the tournament packet. “It’s a real solution for someone, for instance, who has grown up in Powhatan and wants to stay here,” he said. “Or, someone who has moved here and has a job here…can they afford to work here? We’re saying, if there’s housing they can afford, then yes, they can work here and live here. It’s a great thing.” Also under the Habitat for Humanity Powhatan umbrella is the Critical Repairs Program. This program focuses on repairs to homes which are considered to be “critical to the structural integrity, safety or utility of the home,” according to the tournament packet. “You walk into these homes and the floors are collapsing, the electricity doesn’t work, the wiring is dangerous at best,” he said. “These are situations that most people, certainly my board and my volunteers, are just appalled when they walk in. We’re
able to help them, so it’s great.” Bowring said the program averaged six repairs in the past, but last year the program accomplished 15 repairs. This year, the tournament has some different aspects to it. The tournament in 2017 offered sponsorship opportunities, from hole sponsorship all the way up to the title sponsorship for the event. In between those two extremes are sponsorships for contests, driving range, raffle, award sponsor, beverage cart, golf cart and the lunch sponsor. Powhatan Rotary is the title sponsor for the event, with C&F Bank, Eagle Construction, Mitchell Homes, Murry and Kuhn Dentistry, New Verizon Bank, Lummie Jones at Napier ERA, St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Mikkon Construction, Friends of Lee Ware, Wildwood Barbeque, Colony Construction, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School, R.C. Goodwyn and Sons, Virginia Septic Services and Repair, Royall Well and Pump, the Powhatan Today, Yardworks, Humphrey Electric, Luckstone, J.L. Minter Construction, B.J. Freeman, Old Dominion Insulation, Electronic Systems Inc., Richardson, Harris and Boatwright, Ray Crump, CPA also involved in sponsoring the event. Another addition for the event this year is a
hole-in-one contest. There are four opportunities throughout the course for a hole-in-one, with each hole offering a different prize if a golfer should ace that particular hole. The big prize is one of the holes will pay out $10,000 should a golfer sink the ball in one shot. Other prizes include golf clubs from Callaway Golf, an LCD television, and round-trip domestic airplane tickets for two people from Expedia. The event on Sept. 22 will begin with registration at 11:30 a.m., with a barbeque lunch, followed by a Captain’s Choice format golf tournament, which starts with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. There will also be the hole-inone contest, longest drive and closest-to-the-pin as well as a 50-50 raffle. It is also being put on with a partnership with the Powhatan Sheriff’s Office, who will be on hand for the festivities, including selling the raffle
tickets to golfers on the course. “It’s been a lot of work,” Bowring said. “But, the response has been overwhelming. Who hope to keep this going and keep building this event.” While the tournament benefits many in Powhatan from the Habitat for Humanity program, the 50-50 raffle this year is benefitting the family of the late Michael Walter, with 25-percent of the proceeds going to his family. “That was one reason why we wanted to make sure the Sheriff’s Office was involved with the event,” Bowring said.
Bowring said that anyone who comes out to participate in the tournament will not only have a great day of golf, but get to be a part of an organization that is enacting change. “They get to be involved in an organization that is very quickly evolving into a force that is going to make a significant change for people who are and have been Powhatan residents,” he said. “None of this funding is going out of the county. That’s important to a lot of people. It’s not only coming out and playing golf, but also helping make the community a better place to live.”

Roundup: Indians volleyball sweeps Orange By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Powhatan’s volleyball team grabbed a win on Sept. 14 against Orange at home in straight sets. The Indians took down the Hornets 25-8, 25-5, 25-14. “We played focused and clean,” Indians head coach Amber Foos wrote in an email. “It was hard to judge based on the level of competition, but we were able to stay in control and not play down to the level of our opponent.” Abby Nee led the way for the Indians with eight kills and 17 assists. Sierra Ellison had seven digs and four aces, while Lauren Llewellyn had seven digs and five aces. The win split the week for the Indians as they fell in straight sets against Albemarle on Sept. 12. “We struggled a lot with our defense, especially blocking,” Foos wrote about the game against the Patriots. “We got beat on short game like tips and roll shots and the defense lacked the reaction time needed to pick those up. I think we could have performed a lot better if we were able to make the necessary adjustments and limit our unforced errors.” Powhatan is in the thick of the Jefferson District, as they faced Western Albemarle on Sept. 19 and will play Charlottesville on Sept. 21 at home before
going out of their district and region to face Clover Hill on Sept. 25. Foos wrote that the district games coming will present a good challenge for the Indians. “They get a chance to see what they can do as a team if they are in control, make less errors and play focused,” she wrote. “It’s fuel to put toward the more challenging opponents. There are some tough teams in our district and if we can handle them with fewer errors and be more dominating and win, we’ll be ready for regionals.”
CROSS COUNTRY The Powhatan cross country team got its season underway with two meets in a week. On Sept. 16, the Indians traveled to the prestigious William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg. Powhatan’s Lindsey Fanz was the top overall Indians runner, as she finished 19th out of 183 runners in the girls Varsity A race with a time of 20:54. Caileigh Dintino finished 47th in the invitational with a time of 21:57. On the boys side, Colton Vosburg finished 77th out of 264 with a time of 18:26 and Cooper Schardt was 91st with an 18:33. On Sept. 13 in the season-opening quad race, Fanz finished fourth with a time of 22:24. She was a little over two minutes be-

hind first place Emily Smeds of Fluvanna, who ran a 20:18. Dintino was seventh with a time of 23:27, with Brooke Dippold running a 24:06 for 12th place. Ashley Trevillan was 20th with a time of 25:36, Megan Perkins finished 25th after running a 27:03, Alexis Elzey was 29th after a 28:10 and Carly Dolan was 32nd with a 28:35. Louisa won the meet, with Fluvanna second, Powhatan third and Orange fourth. On the boys side, fresh-

man Cooper Schardt was the top Indians runner after an 18:51, which was seventh-best. Colton Vosburg wasn’t far behind his teammate, finishing in 18:57 for ninth place. John Cavedo was 12th with a 19:28, Davis Tester was 18th with a 20:15 and Gabriel Kerns was 21st with a 20:55. Will Paxton finished 22nd with a 21:04, with Logan Allen coming home 23rd with a 21:16 to round out the scoring for the Indians. Powhatan finished third overall with 65 points, behind Louisa and Orange and ahead of Fluvanna.
Dillon Nelson of Louisa won the meet with a 17:32. “The performances and effort of our runners in these first two meets have been impressive,” co-head coach Paul Smartschan wrote in an email. “The team as a whole has represented Powhatan well, not only with their speed and toughness, but also with their class and sportsmanship. Coach Webb and I couldn’t be more proud of everyone so far.”
FIELD HOCKEY Powhatan split a pair of games, with a loss on the road and a win at home.
The Indians, ranked fifth in the Times-Dispatch power poll, lost to Albemarle 2-0, but bounced back with a 3-0 win against Orange. Hanna Hathaway, Edwards and Ella Taylor scored the goals for the Indians.
FOOTBALL Blessed Sacrament Huguenot fell on the road to Portsmouth Christian 34-9. The lone touchdown of the game for the Knights was scored by Raymond Avery on a throw from Kemper Roudabush.

The Powhatan Tribe and Flat Rock Warriors youth football teams, seen here at Powhatan Middle School last season, have both begun their seasons in 2017.
Warriors, Tribe underway in CQL season By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
A
s football everywhere has begun, from Powhatan High School to the National Football League, the youngsters of Powhatan have also started their 2017 seasons. Members of the Flat Rock Warriors and Powhatan Tribe are just a few games into the Chesterfield Quarterback League season. For the Flat Rock Warriors in the Northern National Division, the Minors and Juniors teams are both 0-2, while the Seniors team is 2-0. The Flat Rock Seniors defeated Dinwiddie on Sept. 9 by a score of
30-19 and made it two-in-a-row with a 28-0 win over Gordon on Sept. 16. Flat Rock’s Juniors team fell to Dinwiddie on Sept. 9 27-13 and then to Gordon on Sept. 16 27-7. The Minors opened the season with a 27-0 loss to Dinwiddie on Sept. 9 and fell 20-6 to Gordon on Sept. 16. Flat Rock’s Minors and Juniors teams will face Spring Run on Sept. 23. The Minors play at 6 p.m. and the Juniors will play at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at Powhatan High School. Flat Rock’s Seniors team will play on Sept. 27 against Enon at Midlothian Middle School. The Powhatan Tribe Minors team
opened the year on Sept. 9 with a 2412 win over Harrowgate. The result from the Sept. 16 game against Evergreen was not available at the time of printing. The Tribe Juniors opened the year on Sept. 9 with a 41-0 loss to Harrowgate, but rebounded with a 13-0 win over Wells on Sept. 14. The Tribe Seniors lost their first game 20-6 to Harrowgate. On Sept. 23, the teams will be back in action. The Tribe Minors, Juniors and Seniors will all travel to take on Robious at Midlothian Middle School. The Minors play at 6 p.m., the Juniors play at 7 , and the Seniors at 8 p.m.
was pleased with that. I thought Noah did a nice job throwing. Jacob did a good job running hard.” Jacob Taylor then took over on the drive, rushing for 40 yards over five plays, including a nine-yard run for a score to put Powhatan back ahead. The Indians had a chance to press their advantage after holding Hopewell to a punt, but the Indians drive stalled after Dowdy was sacked, putting them out of range for a potential score. Hopewell answered in four plays to tie the game with a nine-yard run by quarterback Greg Cuffey. The Blue Devils swung the momentum solidly their way after blocking a Powhatan punt, which was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. That score put Hopewell ahead by one score and it was a lead that would not be challenged the rest of the game.
Starting with the Cuffey score, the Blue Devils scored 41 unanswered points. Powhatan was plagued by incomplete passes in crucial situations, untimely penalties, and defensive breakdowns. “We still have too many penalties and too many mistakes,” Woodson said. “We tried to put more people into the game. Mistakes happen, missed assignments…we’re giving up easy touchdowns. We just can’t stop the big plays. It’s difficult for us to stop the big plays in the open field. We need to make some adjustments. It’s a difficult situation, but we’re just going to keep trying hard. That’s all we can do.” While the Indians fell to 0-3, Woodson said that he felt it was an improved team from the first two games of the season. “Hopewell is a much better team than (Midlothian and Caroline),” Woodson said. “They’ve got some athletes. They’re loaded. I thought we had some things clicking early in the game. I thought we did some things well. I think the athleticism took over.” Powhatan will travel to Western Albemarle on Sept. 22 for the fourth game of the year. The Warriors are coming off a 33-14 loss to Collegiate. The Indians hope to replicate the success the Cougars defense had, as Collegiate intercepted four passes. But, Woodson knows the talent that Western Albemarle fields and the task ahead of his team. “They throw it like crazy,” he said. “They have a tremendous quarterback. He’s really good. He can run it and throw it.” Billy Fellin may be reached at wfellin@powhatantoday.com or on Twitter at @BillyFellin

the red zone. Just two plays later, quarterback Noah Dowdy ran a quarterback sneak to put the Indians ahead. Unfortunately for Powhatan, the momentum gained from the early turnover and score evaporated on the ensuing kickoff when Hopewell returned the kick within Powhatan’s red zone. Walker made up for his early gaffe by running the first play of the drive into the end zone to tie the game. Dowdy engineered Powhatan’s aerial attack on the next Indians drive, with five straight passing plays. Dowdy spread his passes around to targets such as Ben Nowacki, Clark Gavin, Gabe Satterwhite and McMullin. “(McMullin) did a nice job,” Woodson said. “He had six or seven catches and did a real nice job. Powhatan’s Noah Dowdy (7) had the offense moving along through the air and on the ground at times against the Hopewell Blue Devils, but the Indians were victims of penalties and dropped passes during the game.
