Meeting about apartments draws anger By Laura McFarland News Editor

P

OWHATAN – An Indiana-based developer held an information meeting last week on the possibility of bringing an apartment complex to Powhatan County and was met with a great deal of pushback from residents who attended. R.J. Pasquesi, president of KCG Development, spoke to a crowd of about 70 people on Tuesday, Nov. 28 in the auditorium of Powhatan High School. He outlined his company’s desire to ask the county to rezone the land in question from Heavy Industrial to Village Center Planned Development so the developer can build apartments and a commercial space there. The project, known as The Reserve at South Creek, would sit on about 26 acres of land located at the crossroad of Old Church Road and Carter Gallier Boulevard. It includes plans for 228 units of one, two and three bedroom apartments built in two phases. Pasquesi said his company wants to build 11 garsee APARTMENTS, pg. 2 }

OWHATAN –Powhatan County parents and caregivers are invited to attend a special workshop this week to talk about keeping babies safe while they are sleeping. The Powhatan County Department of Social Services, in partnership with Greater Richmond Stop Child Abuse Now, will hold a free workshop at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7 at the Powhatan Rescue Squad Building. The purpose of the event is to make people aware of safe sleep habits for children and for infants in particular, social services director Catherine Pemberton said. Two co-sleepMETRO ing related infant deaths on the same weekend in November in Powhatan County were the catalysts for holding the workshop, Pemberton said. In light of the recent tragedies after not having similar situations for many years, she said her office wanted to do something to promote awareness for safe sleeping for infants. Co-sleeping injuries and deaths are the result of poor decision making, not abuse or neglect, Pemberton said. “Sometimes a baby is fretful or mommy gets up to feed the baby in the middle of the night and just brings the baby back to bed. It is accidental. It’s just a terrible tragedy. And it’s so sad because it’s preventable,” she said. The workshop will focus on simple safe sleep practices to reduce the risk of infant sleep related deaths, Lynn Murphy, service programs manager, said. They will talk about subjects such as

POWHATAN – Through the combined efforts of Powhatan County Fire and Rescue, the Powhatan County Sheriff's Office, and Powhatan County Public Safety Communications, the county was announced last week as the fifth jurisdiction in Virginia to be certified as a HEARTSafe Community. A special presentation was made during the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Monday, Nov. 27, to announce the HEARTSafe Community designation, which is a program designed to promote survival from sudden out-of-hospital cardiac ar-

rests. A certificate was presented to Powhatan Fire and Rescue Chief Steven Singer by Lori L. Knowles, deputy chief of EMS Operations for the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department, and Kevin Dillard, president of the Rappahannock EMS Council. The HEARTSafe Community program focuses on a community’s efforts to strengthen the systems involved in the “chain of survival,” as described by the American Heart Association, after sudden cardiac arrest to prevent it from becoming irreversible death. “Your chief and his team have gotten together to make sure a

den-style, two- or three-story buildings to house the apartments as well as a clubhouse that would be used for a leasing office, exercise facility, business center, and community room for residents. The project also includes 30,000 square feet of commercial space, which Pasquesi said would likely be office spaces. After a 17-minute presentation, Pasquesi took questions and comments from the audience, and those ranged from questions about the impact of the development on Powhatan County in different ways to people outright saying they were opposed to it. “We want to hear what is important to you. It is a collaboration. We are definitely open and willing to make changes. Nothing is set in stone yet and if things are reasonable and make sense, we are willing to make those changes,” Pasquesi said about holding the neighborhood meeting and being open to more community feedback.

Project logistics The 228 units of multi-family apartments built in two phases would involve 108 units in Phase I and 120 units in Phase II, Pasquesi said. In total, there would be about 60 one-bedroom units (about 760 square feet); 105 two-bedroom units (about 1,050 square feet) and 63 three-bedroom units (about 1,140 square feet). Pasquesi mentioned having the application handed in to Powhatan County as early as this week. The developer would then submit an application to the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) in March 2018 and hope to receive it by May 2018. It would start construction in January 2019, have the first units open in August or September 2019 and complete construction in February or March 2020, he said. Rental rates would range from $580 to $900 for a one bedroom; from $700 to $1,050 for a two bedroom and from $800 to $1,210 for a three bedroom, he said. KCG would finance the first phase of the multi-family units using tax credits issued by VHDA. During the questions, Pasquesi was asked about having a range of prices for the same apartments and whether than meant the developer planned to bring Section 8 or subsidized apartments to Powhatan. Pasquesi said this project would be Section 42 housing, also known as the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program. Through this program, investors receive a reduction in their tax liability in return for providing affordable housing to people with fixed or lower incomes, said J.D. Bondurant, director of the tax credit programs for VHDA,

best friend, Becky Murray. Aleka is best remembered for her love of her family, especially her children and grandchildren. "Yaya," as she was affectionately known, was a selfless woman who worked diligently as the owner of Back Room Tailor Shop. Because of her determined spirit, she was an inspiraGRAVELY tion to all following her cancer diagnosis. Her family finds solace in knowing that she is with God and whole again. A Celebration of Life took place at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 4 in the chapel at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 10200 Pridesville Road, Amelia Court House, VA 23002. A celebration reception immediately followed.

NORMA PENNINGTON Norma Judkins Pennington of Moseley, formerly of Surry, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of Joseph and Annie Judkins of Surry. She retired from the United States Postal Service. She was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Powhatan, where she resided with her husband, James Raymond Pennington. She is survived by her husband of 61 PENNINGTON years, James; daughters, Jenni-

which was contacted to offer a more detailed description. The residents who live in homes built with Low Income Housing Tax Credits must be income and program eligible and the rent that a resident will pay is capped at a fixed amount. “The incentive is used to essentially provide assistance to renters through the construction. The developer gets incentives during the construction process he can turn into reduced rent. That is how the renter sees the benefit,” Bondurant said. There are different requirements with this tax credit program, he said. Either 20 percent of the units must be occupied by households with incomes at or below 50 percent of the area median gross income or at least 40 percent of the units must be occupied by households with incomes at or below 60 percent, he said. Likewise the complex might have residents at a lower rate of higher percentage and even residents paying full market value. In rental assistance programs such as Section 8, the resident’s rent is based on 30 percent or less of his/her income and the remaining adjusted portion is funded by the federal government, Bondurant said. The Section 42 Program is not a government-subsidized rental program. The Reserve at South Creek would target the majority of its units to working class families, individuals and seniors that are making between $22,000 and $47,000 a year, Pasquesi said. This would be waiters, waitresses, retail employees, teachers, law enforcement personnel, many county employees and seniors who are on a fixed income. “One of the things about this program as part of that is there are very strict criteria we have to abide by. One is we have to have to verify the incomes of everybody that lives there. … We have resident selection criteria. We are looking at background checks, criminal history, eviction notices. Any of that stuff within the last three years and they are not allowed into the community,” he said. Regarding the actual buildings, Pasquesi pointed out the project has to adhere to stringent architectural standards. The developer is also seeking to achieve EarthCraft Platinum or Gold Certification, which has to do with projects that are healthy and operationally cost effective, as well as energy, water, and resource efficient. He said the project would be 80 percent or more brick and 20 percent or less fiber cement board siding. It would have a heating and cooling system SEER rating greater than 15.0 and water heaters would have an energy factor greater than 93 percent. In recognition of Powhatan’s dedication to remaining rural, the project would keep more than 40 percent of the site as green space, Pasquesi said. He added that they wanted to make sure there will be a buffer between Old

fer Hastings and husband, Paul, and Cynthia Spicer and husband, Neil; her three grandchildren, Sarah Waide and husband, Kenny, Rebecca Spicer and James Spicer. She was preceded in death by her brother, Faulcon. Norma was an avid cook, gardener and student at the Life Long Learning Institute of Midlothian. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, and always enjoyed sharing dessert with visitors. A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 11891 Rolfe Highway, Surry. A reception followed.

JUDY STROUD Judy Gayle Newcomb Stroud, 67, of Powhatan went to her heavenly home on Friday, December 1, 2017. She is survived by her husband, Thomas R. Stroud; two daughters, Bonnie G. Stroud and Christina S. Hogan, both of Chesterfield; her mother, Violet K. Bright of Richmond; her mother-in-law, Constance Stroud of Powhatan; and 10 grandchildren. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, December 4 at STROUD Rocky Oak Church, 2687 Rocky Oak Road, Powhatan, VA 23139, where funeral services were also held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Arrangements by Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, Blackstone.

Church Road and any buildings, so there will be at least a 75-foot buffer there and “in most areas it is significantly larger than that.”

Benefits to the county The Reserve at South Creek done in three phases would bring more than $45 million of investment to the community, Pasquesi said. KCG Development will partner with a major financial institution for anywhere from 15 to 30 years to finance the project. Among the benefits Pasquesi said the project would bring to the county was that it is expected to create 200 new jobs during each phase of construction plus additional full-time jobs for ongoing operations, he said. KCG Development would hire a Richmondbased management property to manage the property for the developer, which would retain ownership. He said the 30,000-square-foot commercial space would also lead to more jobs in Powhatan. The Reserve at South Creek would bring in an estimated $225,000 in annual tax revenue when fully built out as well as money the company would pay for permits, connection fees and proffers. He also pointed out the property would be hooked up to the county’s water and wastewater system, which would help reduce how much the county has to subsidize it. Additionally, the tenants living there would be paying property taxes and using local businesses, which helps the local economy, he said.

Resident reactions After his presentation, Pasquesi fielded many questions and comments from residents, with some getting more reactions from the room than others. Many residents were concerned with the impact of adding 228 units on the school system, fire and rescue, law enforcement, traffic and other county services. Pasquesi said his company had not studied the impact on the school system but that it had received feedback from the school board last year that the schools are at less than 50 percent capacity. However, residents quickly pointed out that was wrong and that having two of the elementary schools at or near capacity has triggered the school district to realign the county’s elementary schools in 2018. Currently Flat Rock and Powhatan Elementary schools are near capacity (90 and 100 percent capacity, respectively), according to the realignment committee option packet. The schools are expected to be realigned because sixth-graders currently being housed at Pocahontas Elementary School will go to the new Powhatan Middle School when it opens in September 2018 and create extra room for students from the

other elementary schools to be moved there. Residents asked about the traffic impact of adding so many extra cars to the roads, especially so near the high school and all of its young drivers. Pasquesi said a traffic study was completed and sent to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) with the conclusion that the roads are adequate for the amount of traffic. This was met with laughter from the room. The question of traffic impact would come up several times. One resident stated he thinks the ratio of the money the county will get in real estate taxes to what it will lay out in services for residents of the apartments is out of proportion. He added the roads and schools can’t handle the extra capacity. Another resident wanted crime statistics for “Section 8 housing,” which prompted an argument that would come up several times about the type of housing project this is. Pasquesi said the property manager would have a zero tolerance policy about causing problems or having visitors that cause issues, which could lead to eviction. One man asked why KCG decided to build in Powhatan. Pasquesi said they saw an opportunity, talked with some constituents about their needs and that it was in line with the county’s desire to get more businesses, which often requires more rooftops to happen. Pasquesi also said he felt there was enough demand in Powhatan for this affordable housing and that it wouldn’t only be bringing in people from outside of the county. Another resident brought up the strain this kind of complex is going to put on local police, fire and EMS services. He said he doubted it would lead to a surge in volunteers to the rescue and fire squads, so that would mean hiring more paid first responders to handle the increased load. One resident who lives directly across the street from the property on Old Church Road said she and her husband would be immensely impacted to go from being rural property owners to living next to an apartment building. She said she has already had three vehicles crash into their front yard and adding more cars on that road would only make it more dangerous. At a few points during the meeting, residents also spoke directly to each other, telling them if they don’t want to see this type of development in Powhatan County, they need to contact their elected officials to give their opinions. Although The Reserve at South Creek is not listed in KCG Development’s portfolio, more information about the company can be found on the developer’s website, www.kcgdevelopment.com. Mechanicsville man killed in single vehicle crash Contributed Report A Mechanicsville man was killed on Friday, Dec. 1 in a singlevehicle crash on Old River Trail in Powhatan County. Mcdonald Wellford III, 27, of Mechanicsville died at about 2 a.m. in the 3600 block of Old River Trail as he was traveling eastbound on the road, according to Sgt. Keeli L. Hill, public information officer for the Virginia State Police. The state police’s preliminary investiga-

tion shows Wellford was driving a 2004 Toyota Tacoma that appears to have had left front tire failure causing him to lose control, Hill said in a release. The vehicle then ran off the right side of the road, striking a drain culvert and overturning. Wellford, who was the sole occupant, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was not wearing his seatbelt. Speed and alcohol are being considered factors in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

AWARD Continued from pg. 1

Gillespie, the dispatch manager of Powhatan 911 communications, was one of seven contenders statewide for the award, which she received on Nov. 11 during an EMS symposium in Norfolk. When she attended the ceremony with her sister, Kim Schmitt, and her name was announced, Gillespie said she was surprised and excited but didn’t lose sight of knowing the success she achieved with implementing a new program in the department was only possible because her co-workers are quick learners and hard workers. “We have lots of changes in the last few years within the communications department and they have all been very good about embracing the change. It has made my job a whole lot easier,” Gillespie said. “There are still nerves going on because we are still a new department now. Some people are still nervous because there are still changes going on every day, but they are great about embracing the change so it makes things much easier.” Gillespie was also recognized by the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 27. At the meeting, she again deflected attention from her achievement and thanked her fellow emergency communications coworkers, members of law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel, the board of supervisors and county administration, all of whom play an “important role in emergency communications in Powhatan County.” “These accomplishments were a team effort and I look forward to working with you for years to come as we strive to continuously improve operations in the 911 center,” she said at the meeting. Gillespie had already been honored on

Cindy Gillespie, dispatch manager of Powhatan 911 communications, talks about her recognition with this year’s state’s telecommunicator award and how earning it was a group effort.

May 20 as the 2017 Regional Award for Outstanding Telecommunications Officer/Dispatcher during an awards ceremony for Old Dominion Emergency Medical Service Alliance (ODEMSA), said Tom Nolan, director of emergency 911 communications. The regional win was also a first for Powhatan and put Gillespie into the running for the state recognition. The regional and state awards were given largely due to Gillespie’s efforts to become an instructor in emergency medical dispatch (EMD) and then certify Powhatan’s 14 other 911 dispatchers so they can provide the service, too, Nolan said. EMD is a systematic program of handling medical calls where dispatchers can use guide cards to help them quickly and properly determine the nature and priority of the call, dispatch the appropriate response, then give the caller instructions to help treat the patient until the responding EMS unit arrives, he said.

Before EMD was implemented, dispatchers didn’t have a set standard response or questions to medical calls, he said. The result of implementing EMD is that people in Powhatan are better served today, he added. “If you call up with a medical emergency issue, our 911 people can walk you through first aid and give you dedicated, professional advice over the phone all the way until the first responders get there,” he said. Chairman Bill Melton, who represents District 4, said when he was first elected several years ago that he saw a passion in Gillespie to become an even better person and improve Powhatan’s EMS communications. “You have demonstrated that consistently. You’ve also invested in our county and we’ve also invested back in you. We created the education monies that we set aside and you’ve taken advantage of it. It is really exciting to see you continue to grow and (see) what an asset you are for our county along with all the other EMS,” Melton said. “We are just really excited to see you continue to grow and thank you for all the investment you’ve done in our county.” Gillespie took classes to become a certified instructor in first CPR and then EMD through the Association of Public Communication Officials, which means that training can now be down in-house. She then trained all of the dispatchers in July and August 2016 and started using emergency medical dispatch in September 2016. Gillespie had previously said she did the training so quickly and comprehensively because the only way it would work is if someone was always on duty who could provide EMD services when people called into 911 with an emergency. certain percentage of the county is trained in CPR and how to use AEDs. They have worked in partnership with law enforcement, the sheriff and his team, to make sure the deputies have training in CPR and AEDs available,” Dillard said. “Also, ensuring that AEDs are available to the public, whether it be in schools, the YMCA, churches. I was very impressed when I walked in here tonight and I saw the AED on the left side of the front doors. Good job on that.” Powhatan County is the fifth jurisdiction in Virginia to achieve this designation, joining the ranks of Stafford County, King George County, the City of Fredericksburg and the Williams-

Singer said he learned about the HEARTSafe Community program while applying for a grant for a CPR-related app called PulsePoint, which the county did not receive. However, when he heard about and looked into HEARTSafe, he re-

alized the county had already taken the steps to implement many of the criteria that would make it eligible. It was a combination of factors, such as sheriff’s deputies carrying Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs); schools and county

buildings having AEDs onsite, and holding CPR classes for citizens, Singer said. Another major factor was the move in 2016 to have all Powhatan 911 communications dispatchers trained in emergency medical dispatch (EMD), he said. The dis-

patchers have guide cards that can help them properly identify an emergency medical call and walk people through helping a victim until EMS units arrive. The county wouldn’t have qualified for the HEARTSafe designation without having implemented emergency medical dispatch, Singer said. “This is really a group effort between everything that all public safety has done,” he said. Knowles and Kevin Dillard presented the county with signs that can be displayed showing Powhatan is a HEARTSafe Community, although Singer said he doesn’t know yet where they will be placed. “I think it is a program that not everyone knows about, but I am certainly proud for Powhatan County to be one of the first five in the state to be certified as a HEARTSafe community. It is a nice designation that people know we are looking out for their interests,” he said.

Decorating tree offers a night of memories By Laura McFarland News Editor

hen it comes to Christmas, this editor believes that the whole thing should either be focused on the meaning of the celebration, which is Jesus’ birth, or the spirit of it, which is about selflessness and giving. Yes, I like many of the trappings of the season, including looking at Christmas lights, weird gift exchanges, extra baked goods floating around, and people helpless against getting holiday music stuck in their heads. I also love seeing an increase in food and clothes drives in Powhatan, live nativities telling the story of Jesus’ birth, watching people open their hearts and wallets to give to programs like the Coalition of Powhatan Churches and the Powhatan Christmas Mother, and attending special services like the one Graceland Baptist Church holds for those with special needs so they too can experience the wonder of this season. The funny thing is, the only place where all this doesn’t seem to apply is with my Christmas tree. There, it’s all about me, and I am OK with that. Years ago, when I was ready to move out of the house, included among my things was a faded old copier paper box containing special ornaments from my childhood. The year my parents got married, they bought a Hallmark ornament together to commemorate the occasion. They also bought ones for my sisters, who were from my mom’s previous marriage. The year I was born, they bought a Baby’s First Christmas ornament, and again my two sisters received their own. This tradition continued for several years. “I enjoyed it. I wanted for y’all to have a little bit of heritage and some-

thing to look back on,” my mom recently told me. “I have an ornament I still have that was a Santa Claus. I still cherish it. I don’t put it on the tree anymore because I am afraid it will get broken, but I cherish it.” For the first few years of my life, the ornaments were round with illustrations on them along with the year. After a few years, there were other special figures, such as an Eskimo and a wolf in a canoe, a mouse inside an ice cream cone holding a spoon, a bear holding a bell, a kangaroo kicking a soccer ball, and a cardinal wearing winter gear. When my dad died in 1988, it was a harder tradition for my mom to keep doing for a number of reasons, not the least of which she was a single mom and ornaments for three children could add up. But she did continue it for a few years until I think our interest started waning. Several years ago, I bought a cute little 3-foot artificial tree that could house all of these ornaments from my childhood and filled in the empty spots with pretty teal ornaments and ribbon to make it look full and more festive. But then, year after year, I kept up the tradition of adding a special ornament that meant something to that year, sometimes serious, sometimes funny. There are two ornaments commemorating the years I finished first a half marathon and then a full marathon. There is the ornament shaped like a cowboy boot (Texas girl born and raised) that is so heavy I generally put it under the tree rather than hanging it up. Two drums, one red and one white, are ornaments that once hung on the tree of my mom’s mom, Nana, who died several years ago. Two years ago, friends separately gave me Doctor Who and Harry Potter themed ornaments because we are all fans. There’s a very pretty angel that

used sed to hang on my middle le sister’s tree until I talked alked her out of it. Last year, I got some homemade omemade Minion ornaments at one of the local ocal Christmas events vents for the fun of it. Unfortunately, one of them hem fell and broke a little, ttle, but I just put him att the back of the tree with his one eye facing ng out. This year’s ornament rnament hasn’t been een decided yet. So, yes, it’s a tree all about me, but I think hink Christmas trees are re that way for many families amilies that hat embrace race the he tradition ition off getet-

ting or making new ornaments every year. When I took the ornaments out of their boxes on the night after Thanksgiving and started arranging them on that little tree, I was assailed with the memories of people and places far away but

close in my heart that were tied to many of those ornaments. And when that happened, the tree about me became a tree about us and didn’t seem so selfish after all. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.

itting in Ms. Adams’ fifth period English class was never easy. The class came at the end of a long day for students who were just becoming accustomed to changing classes and assuming roles as bonafide students. And, on Fridays, the minutes on the clock above the blackboard seemed to move painfully slow as the anticipation of a weekend without school increased with each passing second. The small speaker below the clock crackled once before any voices could be heard, and often it cracked followed by silence and no announcement ensued. But, this time was different and our principal, B.T. Doyle, began searching for words to describe the unimaginable to his student body. “President Kennedy was shot today in Dallas,” Doyle began. He didn’t provide the details or the ultimate terror of the final result, but the announcement was like no other in my memory, and Doyle’s voice indicated a seriousness that I’d seldom heard in my short life. “Yeah, I pulled back on my trusty slingshot and let go a shot right at the president,” joked our class clown who always had an inappropriate comment for almost any situation. No one laughed, and the teacher quickly told him to shut up. I wonder to this day if that person realizes the stupidity of his comment at such a period in our nation’s

history. I never forgot, and, when I see this guy even today, I can only think of his stupid words following the news. The scope of the national tragedy was not evident to us as eighth-graders, but the tears in our teacher’s eyes provided a clue that the next few days would be surreal, almost otherworldly. I stared out the windows of the class and noticed the flag at the office was flying at half-mast, a sure sign that someone important in America had passed, and it didn’t take an investigative journalist to understand that the president had been assassinated. I remember the bus ride home was subdued, and some older students wept as we headed for the numerous stops. When I returned home, my 80-year-old GreatAunt Mollie was crying, something I’d never seen her do before. For some reason, I began to cry with her as we lamented the fate of a young president with a young family, and the senseless nature of the crime. The days that followed seemed almost dream-like with no semblance to normalcy as a nation grieved an almost unthinkable end to a presidency. Even the President’s opponents seemed shocked with the unbelievable set of events. We remained glued to our television sets for hours of coverage of the investigation, but more astutely focused on the pomp and ceremony that surrounds the death of a president. A riderless horse with boots turned backwards, guards from all branches of the Armed Forces stand-

ing in vigilant silence as thousands of mourners passed a casket resting in the Capitol — just some of the images that remain vivid in the minds of those who lived it. Heading to church the following Sunday seemed almost like a respite from the gloom and doom that surrounded every aspect of American life in the days following the assassination. The routine of the service offered a brief glimmer of how our lives used to be before those few seconds in Dallas. That small offering of some peace of mind was quickly shattered when our minister announced from the pulpit that Lee Harvey Oswald had been shot in Dallas. It wasn’t quite the world turned upside down, but there was a sense of confusion and dismay among all of us, and I personally wondered if things would ever return to the way they used to be. For many of us, that day will live in infamy, and I count myself one of the many who gauge their lives in timelines that revolve around that date. It’s difficult to explain but life was different after those horrific events in Dallas. Not a single person from my generation does not remember where they were when the President was shot, and the impact the news had on their lives. And that’s the way it was on Nov. 22, 1963. Some of us will never forget, while, hopefully, future generations will never have to remember a time when a nation’s blood was spilled on that street in Dallas. For many of us, it was the end of innocence.

knowledge that people are aware of, Murphy said, but she added “you can’t say it enough to reduce the risk of infant sleep-related deaths.” “You want that closeness. You want that bond. You want that skin-toskin contact with your baby. I think we just know now that you can’t be too hyper-vigilant when it comes to safe sleeping,” she said. Representatives from Baby Box University will also be at the workshop talking about the Baby Box, which is a shallow cardboard box with a firm, thin mattress designed to be a safe, separate sleeping space for infants when parents want to keep them close, Pemberton said. Many parents sleep with the

box next to their beds so they can easily reach a child who is fretful, colicky, teething or restless without having to get up and go to another room. The boxes are free when adults complete a short education piece and sign a pledge to practice safe sleeping habits. Some will be available at the workshop. ust minutes into the Powhatan girls basketball team’s season opener against Goochland on Nov. 29, the Bulldogs sank two quick baskets, courtesy of Lanaysia Gonzalez, to open up a brief lead. But, powered by 11 points from Katie Henderson, Powhatan was able to quick-

ly erase the deficit and gap the Bulldogs 38-27 to win the first game of the season. “We definitely had first-game jitters,” Indians head coach Kristy Henderson said. “But, we were able to shake it off after the first few minutes. We missed some easy shots. I’m proud of them, though. They stuck with it. They played hard and did everything I asked of them.” It was the first win of Henderson’s career as the head coach for Powhatan.

“It was good to get that first win,” she said. “I was pretty nervous tonight.” After falling behind 4-0, Powhatan went on a 13-0 run, which included five points from Katie Henderson, a threepoint play from Kylee Maiolo and baskets from Maggie Salomonsky and Ali Anderson. Goochland attempted to get back into the game, but were off all night from the floor shooting the ball.

Turnovers and fouls also plagued the Bulldogs. The Indians were in the one-and-one with 5:39 left in the second quarter, followed by the double bonus soon thereafter. While Powhatan was ahead at that point in time, the Indians’ lead could have been even larger had they had success at the stripe. see INDIANS, pg. 2B}

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Dion Butler (5) dribbles through the Lighthouse Chrisitan Academy defense during the 70-55 loss on Nov. 29.

With only two seniors on the roster, the beginning of the 2017-18 season was always going to be a learning period for Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. That reality became all the more evident with defeats in the Knights’ first two games of the year, including their home opener against Lighthouse Christian Academy. Despite the 70-55 loss, coach Chris Hamner saw positive signs from his young team. The first quarter of the contest was a cagey one, with much of the action taking place in the paint and with points being hard to come by. Lighthouse Christian led by a score of just 8-7 at the end

of the period. The Knights used a number of substitutions very early in the game, a strategy that was implemented for a reason: “We’re really big here on knowing our plays, and it’s early in the season so I’m expecting some mistakes. But I’m trying to teach them that if you don’t know the plays, you’re not going to play,” Hamner explained. “But, we put guys right back in there a couple of minutes later.” After an 8-1 run by the Lions to start the second quarter, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot trailed 16-8 before starting a run of their own. The initial spark came with 4:45 remaining until halftime, when junior Jack Lyons took a charge for the Knights that fired up his teammates and the home see KNIGHTS, pg. 3B}

Powhatan’s Deven Van Natter had the hot hand for the Indians on Dec. 1 against Goochland at Powhatan High School. Van Natter led all scorers with 34 points, including six 3-point shots.

Van N atter leads Indians past Bulldogs for first w in By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

In large part, the Goochland Bulldogs defense was able to keep the Powhatan Indians offense in check in the Indians’ home opener on Dec. 1. Well, minus Deven Van Natter. Van Natter exploded for 34 points as the Indians defeated the Bulldogs 62-54 for Powhatan’s first win of the season in its third game of the year. “I thought we played well,” coach Steve Washburn said. “It’s been a long week. Three games in the first game of the season are very demanding on the players. I thought we had some mental fatigue that cost us some errors that I’m not used to seeing out of this group. I think this team will only continue to get better as the season goes on.” Van Natter scored the first nine points of the night for Powhatan and was a sign of things to come for the Indians and to

dread for the Bulldogs. From the end of the first quarter through the early stages of the second, the Indians went on a 9-0 run, which included 3-point shots from Van Natter and Joseph Santiago. The Indians went into the break with a comfortable 10-point advantage. Then, that lead got even more comfortable as Van Natter opened the second half on a personal 10-0 run, which included two shots beyond the arc. “Deven is one of those kids who is a streaky shooter,” Washburn said. “When he gets heated up, he’s a tough guy to defend. Tonight, he got into that rhythm. We needed him to. We had some guys who usually contribute who didn’t contribute tonight. Deven stepped up big for us.” “He shot lights out,” Bulldogs coach Preston Gordon said. “He’s one heck of a player.” Goochland then started to heat up

from the field, challenging Powhatan for the first time in the contest. While the first three quarters were mostly clean of free throws, the fourth quarter was a completely different story. Fouls stacked up for both teams as the Bulldogs and Indians combined to shoot from the line 17 times in the quarter. These repeated foul shots and some 3-point shots from Goochland’s Deion Harwood whittled the Indians’ lead down from the 21 points it was at the start of the quarter to just seven points. Harwood had 26 points for Goochland. But, a Jaylen Hempfield four-point run for the Indians allowed Powhatan to be on cruise control the rest of the game. It was the third game of the season for the Indians in the young season. Powhatan faced Monacan on Nov. 27 and fell 73-54. Austin Washburn scored 15 points, Van Natter had 14 and Hemp-

field had 12 against the Chiefs. Then, the Indians went to Dinwiddie on Nov. 29 and lost a close game to the Generals 57-56. Van Natter had 24 points in the loss, with Santiago adding 18 points. Overall, Washburn said that he feels Powhatan is in a good place in some areas after three tough games early on, but he has some concerns about other areas. “I think my concerns are still the ones we had at the beginning of the season,” he said. “I think defensively, we still have a ways to go. Offensively, the guys are learning their roles and we’re starting to find out where our shots are going to be coming from. That’s only going to get better as the season goes on. But, overall I am pleased with where we are.” It is another three-day week for the Indians as they hosted Midlothian on Dec. 4 and Hanover on Dec. 5 before heading to Fluvanna on Dec. 8.

K nights outpace Spartans for opening night 33-24 w in By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s girls basketball team took to the court to open its season on Nov. 27 on the road against Steward. Boosted by Corrinne Anderson and Anna Gestwick each scoring 12 points, the Knights took down the Spartans 33-24. Anderson scored the first eight points scored by Blessed Sacrament Huguenot of the night for a quick 8-4 lead. Elizabeth Carter extended that run to 10-4 before the Spartans inched back to within two points in the first quarter. But, the Knights re-

During the second quarter alone, the Indians went 0 for 5 at the free throw line. In the game, Powhatan was 8 for 17. Goochland opened the third quarter on a 4-0 run, but the Indians quickly extinguished that spark with

sponded with a basket from Gestwick, a 3-point shot from Katie Schiefer and two free throws from Anderson to end the first quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 17-8. Then, Steward went completely cold from the field. Whether it was poor shot selection, bad luck, or good defense from the Knights, the Spartans were held scoreless in the second quarter. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot didn’t fare much better on the scoreboard in the second, only registering baskets from Anderson and Schiefer. In the third, Schiefer extended the Knights’ run that began near the end of the first to 13-0, which dug

a deeper hole for Steward. Steward answered with a 3-point shot for its first field goal in around a quarter and a half of play to make it 23-11. The Knights and Spartans traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with Steward going on a 5-0 run from the end of the third to the start of the fourth to put the first real pressure of the game on Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. But, Gestwick and Anderson responded with back-to-back baskets to put the Spartans down far enough to where they wouldn’t be able to come back. Despite scoring zero points in the second quarter, Steward outscored the

a 6-0 run of their own. The Bulldogs also missed a prime opportunity near the end of the third quarter. Coach Henderson was called for a technical foul following her reaction to a call made by the referees that went against the Indians. Goochland’s Jalyn Burns took the free throws,

but missed them both. Goochland struggled at the foul line throughout the entire game, going 6 for 16. Then, on the possession gained by the technical foul, the Bulldogs almost immediately turned the ball back over to the Indians. Y et, despite the struggles, the Bulldogs pulled

Knights in the second half 16-12. Each team played an overall clean game, with the Knights only attempting six foul shots to Steward’s seven.

within five points midway through the fourth quarter after a basket from Gonzalez. Katie Henderson then sank a three, Anderson and Maiolo hit a combined three of four foul shots to put the lock on the game. Coach Henderson said that the defense was a big reason behind the opening night win.

“Defense is key,” she said. “We like to mix it up. We’re working on it, getting after it. We’ve got some athletic kids and I like to use them.” Salomonsky and Maiolo each had eight points for the Indians, which is a good sign that the Indians will be able to look to multiple players to put up points. “We’re going to need

that all year long,” Henderson said. Powhatan traveled to Dinwiddie on Dec. 4, followed by its first home game of the year on Dec. 8 against Fluvanna. “We definitely need to work on reading the defense and not telegraphing passes,” Henderson said of what the Indians can improve upon.

Roundup: Indians finish fourth at Glen Allen Inv. By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Powhatan’s wrestling team got its first taste of action for the new season at the Glen Allen Invitational on Dec. 1-2 at Glen Allen High School. The Indians finished fourth overall in the team race, but had some excellent individual performances. Sam Tomlinson and Collin Gerardi both won their weight classes. Gerardi beat Blake Correa of Thomas Dale by major decision 8-0. Tomlinson defeated Jakob Kennedy of Prince George in a 6-3 decision. “It’s cool to have two champions,” Powhatan coach Jonathan Tanaka said. “Sam won 6-3 over a tough opponent from Prince George that he’s familiar with. Collin ran through his bracket.” Gerardi was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the fourth year in a row at the invitational. Tanaka said that a few other wrestlers, such as JD McMillin, had strong performances but just fell short. “(JD) had a rough semifinal match,” he said. “He got in a bad spot and got pinned. Hayden Fitzsimmons entered as a bandit in the same class as (Tomlinson). In his first varsity tournament, he placed fifth. To have two kids in the Top-5 was really nice.” McMillin won a major decision over Jonathan Ochoa of Millbrook 16-3

to clinch third place in his class. Fitzsimmons pinned Mitchell Olsen of Midlothian in 1:25. Jacob Moss finished fourth in the 182 bracket after falling to Noah Hardy of Grassfield in 2:34. Colby Cheatham finished fifth in the 170 weight class after pinning Bryce Payne of Prince George in 2:08. “It was a tough field with some really good teams from the area and beyond,” Tanaka said. “It was a good test for us.” Along with Grassfield, Thomas Dale, Prince George, Midlothian and Millbrook, Atlee, Glen Allen, Mills Godwin, Collegiate, Lee-Davis and Hanover were also in attendance, to name a few. Powhatan will host its first home match of the season at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 against James River. Tanaka said that he hopes to have a good crowd on hand for the team’s debut at home. “It’s always a fun time,” he said. “All of our kids are really excited. We’re going to talk it up. Blackhawk Gym will be there supporting us and the students as well. We’re going to have JV exhibition matches and then the varsity matches. We’ll see how we fare against the Rapids.”

INDOOR TRACK The Powhatan indoor track team began its season on Dec. 2 at the Caroline Invitational. It was a Polar Bear meet for the Indians, but the

warmer-than-usual temperatures provided a different environment than the name would suggest. The Indians certainly made their presence known in Caroline, as they were led by Ashley Trevillian winning the high jump competition. Trevillian won with a mark of 4 feet, 11 inches. Powhatan’s Madelyn Turner finished eighth in the event with a mark of 4 feet, 2 inches. Trevillian was also fifth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 9 inches. Katlyn Mayo also had a strong performance at the meet. She finished second in the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 5 ¼ inches and was sixth in the 55 meters with a time of 8.12. Alexis Atkinson finished third in the 1600 meters with a 6:04.77. Carly Dolan was 13th in the 3200 meters with a 14:17.93. The 4x200 meter relay team for Powhatan finished in 1:59.12 for eighth place, but were just .05 seconds behind seventh-place Woodgrove. Selina Sakrisson was sixth in the discus with a throw of 27 feet, 4 inches. Overall, Powhatan’s girls team finished tied for seventh with J.R. Tucker. Massaponax won the meet with 89 points, followed by Courtland with 63. On the boys side, Brandon Eacho was 11th in the 1000 meters with a 2:58.04. Cooper Schardt was sixth in the 1600 meters

crowd. Junior Matt Dana led the scoring charge during the quarter for the Knights, recording nearly all 13 of his points for the game during the run. Junior Michael Kemp also contributed a number of hustle plays, and it was clear that the energy he brought to the floor rubbed off on his teammates. Freshman Tyler Hall led the team with 18 points. Hamner saw the defense employed by Lighthouse Christian as the key to the run: “This was the first time in a scrimmage or a game where we saw man-toman defense. We finally got to work on our offense, and once the guys

got in the groove and figured out the angles we like to try and exploit, we started clicking and it felt good.” The Knights closed the half with an 18-8 spurt, taking a 25-24 advantage into the break. After a promising second quarter to get back in the game, the pendulum swung back toward the Lions in the third quarter. Lighthouse Christian opened the second half on a commanding 19-0 run that took the air out of the young Knights. By the time the quarter came to a close, BSH had been outscored 24-5 and trailed by 18 points. “We only have eight healthy guys right now. Late in the second quarter we decided to put some guys that had two fouls back in, and they picked up their third

fouls quickly,” Hamner said. “So, it hurt us early in the third quarter when those guys were sitting. Not being very deep caught up to us.” Despite the demoralizing third period, the Knights managed to bounce back in the fourth quarter and score 25 points to make the score a little closer. Overall, Hamner was encouraged by the performance of his team: “In our scrimmages and our first game we got beat up pretty good. So the improvements that we’ve made are tremendous, and we’re just going to keep trying to get better.” Blessed Sacrament Huguenot played on Dec. 5 against Fuqua in the first game of a threegame road trip for the Knights.

with a 5:11.10. John Cavedo also finished sixth, but in the 3200 meters with an 11:02.91, exactly one second behind fifth-place Tyler Miranda of Chancellor High School. Jason Davis was 11th in the 55 hurdles with a 10.48. Noah Jarrell wasn’t far behind in 13th with an 11.44. The boys 4x800 relay team finished in 9:38.94 for ninth overall. Antonio Reyes was fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet. He was also seventh in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7 inches. Reyes finished 13th in the triple jump with a 34foot, 7-inch jump. Blake McCoy was eighth in the shot put with a 36-foot, 5-inch toss.

Powhatan’s boys team was 13th in the standings with three points. Colonial Forge won the event with a 72.33, followed by Dinwiddie in second with 66 points. The Indians will participate in an invitational at St. Christopher’s on Dec. 9.

SWIMMING Powhatan’s swim team

has not started its season as it had its first two meets rescheduled. The Indians were schedule to swim against Louisa on Dec. 2, but that meet was rescheduled to Jan. 27, 2018. Powhatan was also scheduled to swim on the road at Charlottesville on Dec. 5, but that meet was also postponed with no rescheduled date as of yet.
