POWHATAN – The Powhatan County School Board is considering a move that would see the school district embracing solar energy and savings at the same time. During the board’s meeting on Tuesday, May 15, the board heard a presentation from Sun Tribe Solar regarding a possible solar power purchase agreement (PPA) that would see roof-mounted solar arrays installed on top of four of the county’s five public schools. Sun Tribe was one of two companies to submit

a proposal to the school district and was chosen as the preferred vendor to present to the board members, said Dr. Jason Tibbs, director of facilities. If chosen, the company would enter into a 35-year agreement with the division leading to a savings of $3.3 million over that time in addition to being a greener practice. If the board moves ahead on this project, it would be its second foray into the world of energy savings performance contracting in a year. This is a financial mechanism used to pay for today’s facility upgrades with tomorrow's energy savings – without tapping an organization’s capital budget. In this case, Sun Tribe would pay to install solar panels and an accompanying system on top of the three elementary schools and Powhatan Middle School, said Taylor Brown, chief technical officer with Sun Tribe, who made the presentation. The solar panels would provide each of those schools with a percentage of their power needs – the amount differs for each school – and the rest would still be provided by Dominion. According to current projections, the solar panels could provide Powhatan Elementary with 76 percent of its power; Poca-

Powhatan resident Linda Miller will appear as a guest at the upcoming GalaxyCon RIchmond. Miller was one of the stars of the 1967 Japanese film ‘King Kong Escapes.’

Former actress to appear as guest at GalaxyCon By Laura McFarland News Editor

POWHATAN – A few times a year, Linda Miller steps out of her everyday life and enters another world. About five years ago, a part of Miller’s past she thought long over resurfaced. A writer called her out of the blue wanting to do an article about her brief turn as a star – playing Lt. Susan Watson in the 1967 Japanese film “King Kong Escapes.” Unbeknownst to Miller, she was at the center of a great mystery among fans of the film who wanted to know more about her for several decades. Several writers had been searching for Miller since at least the early 1990s. The story ran in the summer 2014 edition of G-Fan, a fan magazine of the Godzilla Society of North America. Around the same time, Jim Cirronella and another author were looking for Miller for inclusion in a book about the director of “King Kong Escapes.” Cirronella ended

up becoming her manager and got Miller started with making appearances at fan conventions. A few times a year, Miller, who lives in Powhatan County and works for Country Living Homes, makes appearances at fan conventions. In the last few years, she has attended conventions and fan events in New Jersey, California, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and even Japan. “I look at these things as I go away for the weekend, make a little money, have a great time, and then come back to regular life,” she said. Most of the time, this side of her life isn’t very prominent. Miller said she has a Facebook fan page and occasionally responds to messages from fans. Other than that “it has been normal life with little moments of this surreal existent.” Now Miller is bringing that second life a little closer to home by appearing as one of the celebrity guests at GalaxyCon Richmond, which will take place from May 31

to June 2 at the Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St., Richmond. “I think it is awesome. I am very excited about it because it is in my own backyard. Hopefully some of my friends who can’t figure out how this all works will be able to come and see,” she said. Aimed mainly at fans of all kinds of genres, GalaxyCon Richmond will allow people to meet TV and movie stars, comic creators, voice actors, cosplayers, writers, pop culture personalities, and local artists, and shop with collectibles vendors. For more information on the event, visit https:// richmond.galaxycon.com. Miller said she will be staying in a hotel near the convention center because she doesn’t yet know what her schedule will involve. She will have a table where she will sign autographs (celebrities charge at these tables for autographs and photos). At other conventions, she has also done panel discussions talking about her brief time in see MILLER, pg. 6
