POWHATAN – The Powhatan County School Board is considering a move that would see the school district embracing solar energy and savings at the same time. During the board’s meeting on Tuesday, May 15, the board heard a presentation from Sun Tribe Solar regarding a possible solar power purchase agreement (PPA) that would see roof-mounted solar arrays installed on top of four of the county’s five public schools. Sun Tribe was one of two companies to submit
a proposal to the school district and was chosen as the preferred vendor to present to the board members, said Dr. Jason Tibbs, director of facilities. If chosen, the company would enter into a 35-year agreement with the division leading to a savings of $3.3 million over that time in addition to being a greener practice. If the board moves ahead on this project, it would be its second foray into the world of energy savings performance contracting in a year. This is a financial mechanism used to pay for today’s facility upgrades with tomorrow's energy savings – without tapping an organization’s capital budget. In this case, Sun Tribe would pay to install solar panels and an accompanying system on top of the three elementary schools and Powhatan Middle School, said Taylor Brown, chief technical officer with Sun Tribe, who made the presentation. The solar panels would provide each of those schools with a percentage of their power needs – the amount differs for each school – and the rest would still be provided by Dominion. According to current projections, the solar panels could provide Powhatan Elementary with 76 percent of its power; Poca-

Powhatan resident Linda Miller will appear as a guest at the upcoming GalaxyCon RIchmond. Miller was one of the stars of the 1967 Japanese film ‘King Kong Escapes.’
Former actress to appear as guest at GalaxyCon By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – A few times a year, Linda Miller steps out of her everyday life and enters another world. About five years ago, a part of Miller’s past she thought long over resurfaced. A writer called her out of the blue wanting to do an article about her brief turn as a star – playing Lt. Susan Watson in the 1967 Japanese film “King Kong Escapes.” Unbeknownst to Miller, she was at the center of a great mystery among fans of the film who wanted to know more about her for several decades. Several writers had been searching for Miller since at least the early 1990s. The story ran in the summer 2014 edition of G-Fan, a fan magazine of the Godzilla Society of North America. Around the same time, Jim Cirronella and another author were looking for Miller for inclusion in a book about the director of “King Kong Escapes.” Cirronella ended
up becoming her manager and got Miller started with making appearances at fan conventions. A few times a year, Miller, who lives in Powhatan County and works for Country Living Homes, makes appearances at fan conventions. In the last few years, she has attended conventions and fan events in New Jersey, California, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and even Japan. “I look at these things as I go away for the weekend, make a little money, have a great time, and then come back to regular life,” she said. Most of the time, this side of her life isn’t very prominent. Miller said she has a Facebook fan page and occasionally responds to messages from fans. Other than that “it has been normal life with little moments of this surreal existent.” Now Miller is bringing that second life a little closer to home by appearing as one of the celebrity guests at GalaxyCon Richmond, which will take place from May 31
to June 2 at the Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St., Richmond. “I think it is awesome. I am very excited about it because it is in my own backyard. Hopefully some of my friends who can’t figure out how this all works will be able to come and see,” she said. Aimed mainly at fans of all kinds of genres, GalaxyCon Richmond will allow people to meet TV and movie stars, comic creators, voice actors, cosplayers, writers, pop culture personalities, and local artists, and shop with collectibles vendors. For more information on the event, visit https:// richmond.galaxycon.com. Miller said she will be staying in a hotel near the convention center because she doesn’t yet know what her schedule will involve. She will have a table where she will sign autographs (celebrities charge at these tables for autographs and photos). At other conventions, she has also done panel discussions talking about her brief time in see MILLER, pg. 6

and Supplier Diversity; Pete Daniel, owner of Ultimate Cycle Discount PowerSports in Powhatan, and Ray Killinger with the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority. Angie Cabell, director of the chamber, said the panel was focused on growth and letting local small businesses know about additional resources in keeping with the adage, “the more you know, the more you can grow.” She encouraged local businesses interested in growth to be their own advocates to make sure they are utilizing available resources in the best way possible. She also pointed out local resources that are more readily accessible to Powhatan businesses, such as the Chamber, county staff or elected officials, than in other localities. The topic of growth seemed beneficial to businesses of all sizes and types in Powhatan, said Roxanne Salerno, economic development program manager. The panel was chosen based on the areas that are crucial to business growth and could provide the best advice for businesses currently in a growth mode or looking toward growth. “We are also working on small-group industry roundtables for specific industries such as manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and automotive. These discussions will give businesses in the same industry an ability to meet each other, discuss opportunities and concerns regarding their industries,” she said.

change, Daniel said. “So many of my fellow business people don’t know how to do that growth; they just throw a number at it. It takes some time and some planning to look at your expenses, which are going to grow. Certainly you need to plan on your growth to cover those expenses, plus anything you would like to achieve above that,” he said. Daniel talked about his own move from Chesterfield to his current location in Powhatan. The company tracks where its customers are coming from and how much they spend so he knew where his most loyal markets were located. Powhatan was the No. 2 zip code for the company, so he felt comfortable moving his business here, he said. “Powhatan is growing. It is a great place; we all love being here. It made good business sense for us to come here, so my growth chart was to go to the No. 2 zip code and then grow again from there,” he said. Annually updating a business plan is important, especially when seeking outside funding sources such as a loan, Killinger said. Small businesses also need to think five and 10 years ahead with plans that consider issues such as their current or future competition, possibilities for diversification, and how changes in technology might affect how they operate. A big part of a company’s growth relates to business collaborations, he said. Many businesses have been using the same suppliers or vendors for years and want to maintain those relationships. But they also have to understand the potential risks or consequences if those vendors cannot meet their needs in the future. “Instead of ‘are they going to continue to grow with me’ and ‘am I going to continue to need

them,’ what if it stops tomorrow? Where do you go? What do you do? Do your supply lines stop right there? Do you have a Plan B?” Killinger said. A better option is to have a number of good relationships with suppliers and keep good credit so you are not caught dead in the water, Daniel said.
Marketing We live in a world where the internet, apps, and social media outlets can have a huge impact on business, Daniel said. At the minimum, small businesses need a company website, but Youtube and social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram are key not only to make sales but to engage customers. “It’s very important that you stay engaged with continual posts – not 10 on one day and then two weeks later you post something. Every other day, throw a story out there. Throw a picture of your customer out there, whether they are coming in the bank or buying a tractor or buying your plumbing service,” Daniel said.
State and local agencies A huge potential growth area many small businesses do not understand is available to them is contracting with state and local agencies. To do that, business first need to be certified with the Small, Women-owned, and Minority-owned Business (SWaM) certification program, which is a state program, Mustin said. The purpose is to enhance procurement opportunities for SWaM businesses participating in statefunded projects. The Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity certifies in five designations: Micro, Small, Womenowned, Minority-owned, and

Service Disabled Veterans. “Every governor has wanted to increase utilization of small businesses in the economy, so they asked that each state agency use about 42 percent of their budget spending money with certified small businesses,” she said. There is no cost involved in becoming certified, but it does take some time as people have to apply and submit supporting documentation, she added. Visit https://www.sbsd.virginia.gov/ certification-division/swam/. The second step small businesses should take is to register in eVA, Virginia’s eProcurement Portal, Mustin said. No state agency can conduct business with a company not registered in eVA. It is free to register, but if a business does win a contract, it owes 1 percent of the bottom line of the contract to eVA. For a certified small business, the fee is capped at $500 and is due after payment has been verified. “It gives you tremendous exposure, not only to about 250 state agency buyers but also about 1,000 local governments – meaning cities, towns and counties,” she said. She added that the most important part of signing up with eVA is to use the system’s codes to their best advantage. For more information, visit https://eva.virginia.gov.
Growing a workforce As businesses grow, they often have to add to their workforce. Where companies go to increase their workforce depends on the industry, Creamer said. For instance, manufacturers have certain preferred methods of attracting workers that are different from a higher education institution or an engineering firm. es and agencies that deal with those with a barrier to employment are putting a big focus on technicians and trades people. “That is where our industries are having a very difficult time securing the workforce they need. That is manufacturing, it’s trades. We hear about the need for trade workers all the time – all the way up to the governor’s office, trades, trades, trades,” she said. For the first time there is state funding to provide grants for certification training at a local community college – fast-tracking that can be done in weeks instead of months or years and can get someone credentials in fields such as manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and distribution, and IT, Creamer said. “This is big news for workforce development. It’s also helpful for small businesses because if your objective is to recruit a workforce, we now have specialized programs for transitioning service members, high school graduates, Virginians who are trying to transition from under employment to living wages, or homemakers trying to return to the workforce,” she said. “We also can help a business owner to upskill an existing workforce and we can use these grants to pay for that.” Along with taking on more employees, companies might be looking at adding positions at the management level. When deciding on whether to hire from within or outside of the company, Creamer said she strives for a balance of business-specific knowledge and fresh ideas. That is a need an individual owner should know best, but they should also be aware there are 24 state agencies that have federal or state funds for business and workforce development.

POWHATAN – Powhatan County Sheriff’s Offices’ K-9 Bane has been having a good spring. The K-9 officer received national attention for finding two children lost in the woods in Powhatan County on March 23. More recently, Bane was promoted to the rank of sergeant in early May. Retired magistrate Jacky Whigham sponsored the purchase of his new badge. The promotion was a combination of a job well done and the promotion of Bane’s handler, Quinn Pasi, to corporal, according to chief deputy Jeff Searfoss. It is a tradition among the military and law enforcement agencies for K-9 officers to outrank their handlers, Pasi said. “The thought behind it is that if a handler mistreats their K-9 partner it can be punished at a greater level due to the K-9 being a superior officer,” he said. Sgt. Bane and the sheriff’s office’s other canine officer, K-9 Jake, also received surprise gifts last week. Veterans MFG, a company in Katy, Texas, reached out to the K-9 division and informed them a private donor had sponsored protective vests for Bane and Jake. “Less than a week later they showed up. No strings attached, no sales pitch,

PHS students earn associate degrees through ACA program By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – Twenty-two Powhatan High School students gave their mothers another reason to be proud of them on Mother’s Day when they graduated on May 12 with an associate degree, a full three weeks ahead of receiving their high school diploma. The 22 members of the Class of 2019 are the second cohort to successfully complete and graduate as part of the Advance College Academy (ACA) pro-

gram. The program provides outstanding high school students the opportunity to earn an Associates of Social Science from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College while simultaneously completing the requirements for their high school diploma. The students received their degrees from J. Sargeant Reynolds during a graduation ceremony held at the Siegel Center at VCU on Sunday, May 12. They will receive their high school diplomas with the rest of PHS’s Class of 2019 at the school’s graduation ceremony on
ticket item that we are now going to be able to hopefully do through this process instead of obligating county funds to accomplish that CIP item,” Jones said. The financing for the roof is worked into the PPA rate Sun Tribe would charge the school district for the solar energy it uses, Brown said. However, that rate is still less than the current host utility rate, and even with an annual increase of 1 percent on the rate, it would still be expected to increase at a lower percentage rate than the host utility rate at 3 percent, he said. The host utility’s rate was projected out over 35 years as well using both the division’s recent bills and historical data provided by the Energy Information Administration, which concerns the entire Virginia commercial energy market, and not just Dominion, said Rob Corradi, public affairs and development manager for Sun Tribe. The savings calculated are based on the differences in the host vs. PPA rates. According to the presentation, the cumulative savings for the division over 35 years would be $3.325 million. Some of the other benefits Brown outlined in his presentation included: Sun Tribe is the largest solar PPA provider in Virginia and would handle the entire project in house,

hontas Elementary, 69 percent; Flat Rock Elementary, 50 percent, and Powhatan Middle, 72 percent. This is over a 12-month period. These projections factor in the performance contract savings the school division is expected to realize with its project with Trane Building Advantage. Powhatan High School is not included in the proposal because its roof, while still good for several years, would need to be replaced to meet Sun Tribe’s requirements, said Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent. As the roof continues to age and needs to be replaced, the school board at that time could consider expanding the solar project at that time. While the solar project has many benefits, one of the biggest immediate appeals would be that Sun Tribe would pay to replace part of the roof on Powhatan Elementary School that is currently one of the top priorities on the school district’s capital improvements program (CIP) list, Jones said. This represents $277,000 in capital outlay the division would no longer have to do since there are no upfront costs involved. “I think that bears pointing out to you as well as the public because that is a big

which includes financing, engineering, safety, construction, and operations and maintenance. The company would own, maintain, insure the solar power systems it installs. An annual inspection is included in the proposal as is the cost for Sun Tribe to remove and redeploy the solar arrays to allow for the installation of new roof membranes. Jones said the fact that Sun Tribe handles all aspects of the project in hose was a key point in the company’s favor. The other proposal received in the RFP process came from a partnership of three different companies handling various aspects of the project. If something went wrong with the system, there was the worry that companies could try to pass the blame, he said. Sun Tribe would provide a comprehensive inspection of the four schools’ roofs prior to solar installation, Brown said. If any repairs are needed, they will be done prior to installation. The solar racking configuration would be approved by the roof membrane OEM manufacturer and then inspected again after installation so the school division can get a signed letter recertifying its existing roof warranty. Sun Tribe partners with a Washington, D.C.based nonprofit called NEED (National Energy

The 2019 ACA Cohort graduates are Olivia Aston, Pierce Bailey, Cole Burton, Jeremy Dodd, Elena Douglas, Hannah Hald, Christian Hardie, Rebecca Hicks, Jennah Jarosinski, Zacary Jasper, Brooklyn Mazza, Blair McAteer, Charlotte Meade, Riley Nickerson, Savannah Post, Ashley Rissmeyer, Ryleigh Roberts, Noah Selino, Ashley Sikes, Ashley Trevillian, Sarah Wood, and Hannah Worsham. The students were recognized by the school board at its meeting on Tuesday, Education Development). The solar provider will offer a grant for teacher training to help them integrate the new technologies in solar power into their curriculum. The system operates “parallel to the grid,” Brown said. During times when the schools are not using high amounts of energy, such as in summer or during breaks, the solar panels are still producing energy. That excess energy will flow back to the grid and the school division will get a credit on its bill for that amount of power. The energy seamlessly flows back and forth in this kind of system, with the power from Dominion picking up where the solar leaves off. So if something happens to the panels, there won’t be an interruption to the buildings’ power. Rick Cole, who represents District 1, said he is concerned about the school district’s energy use and the way people generate energy, so he is excited about the proposal. He hopes the school division could one day receive 100 percent of its power from solar energy. While the board did not approve the proposal at the meeting, the members present gave consensus for staff to continue working on the details of the project. It could come back before the board for a vote in June.

the spotlight. When she was 17 and had just finished high school, Miller and her mother, Marta Miller, moved to Tokyo to join her father, Merle Duane Miller, who was in the Air Force. Almost immediately after she arrived, she started a career as a model. She was spotted on a magazine cover and cast in “King Kong Escapes, she said. Miller filmed one other movie in Japan, “The Green Slime, in 1968, before her family returned to the United States. She briefly tried to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles but said she couldn’t transition to the amount of compromising needed to succeed at the time. Having Americans plucked out of obscurity to star in Japanese films was not an uncommon thing in the 1960s, Miller said. Unbeknownst to her, another young American, Carl Craig, who was living in the same housing project and was 10 years younger, was making a Japanese monster movie at the same time, Gamera vs. Viras. Miller said she met Craig at a convention in New Jersey, and when they started talking about their time in Japan, they learned just how close their paths came without crossing. Craig will also be appearing at GalaxyCon Richmond, and Miller said she is excited to share an autograph table with him again. When she first started getting attention for her former acting role and doing conventions, Miller was like many former actors who wondered why anyone would want to meet them and worried their current image wouldn’t live up to fan expectations, Cirronella said. When actors like Miller worry because they don’t look like they did 50 years ago, he said he reminds them, “neither do the fans. “The fans have grown older. It is kind of like a dream come true to meet somebody that is from your favorite movie or something you watched as a kid, a person who played their favorite character, he said. Many of the fans who come up to talk to her at the shows say they were fans of the movie as children, Miller said. For the most part, they have been nice and respectful. “It is amazing because there is a fan base for these movies. Most of them were 6-, 7-, 8-year-old kids when it first came out. A lot of them say, ‘You were my first love.’ They still hold that, she said. County seeks input on growing parks and rec By Laura McFarland News Editor
G
rowing up in Texas, the two things that stand out to me about my childhood in terms of extracurricular activities away from home were soccer and the library. Don’t get me wrong. We were really active kids. Whether we were living in a neighborhood or in a house with a bit of land, my sisters and I were outside all of the time, playing with one another, animals, or friends. But in terms of resources my family utilized that weren’t specifically about family or church, we were generally at the library checking out books or in a county park – playing sports, using the playground equipment, or having a birthday party or social gathering under one of those special covered picnic areas. Although I am not a huge fan of sports now, I played soccer for several years with different recreation soccer teams that played in the parks. I still remember the thrill of orange slices and Capri Suns after a game. I was surprised by the memory of that popping up, most likely prompted by quite a bit of discussion the county has had lately about its parks and recreation department. It’s a very small department that is in a bit of fluctuation right now as the county figures out which direction it should go. For the last few years, scheduling tournaments has been a huge focus for the department, ostensibly to bring in sports tourism dollars. After complaints from some of the local recreation leagues upset that field use is being dominated by travel teams, that direction might be changing. Something that has to be weighed in that discussion is that there are local children playing on some of those travel teams and local teams hosting some of the tournaments. Another big question mark for the county will be the use of the gym at the former Pocahontas Middle School. The county took control of the building on May 1, but renovations have to be made before it is

put into use. Plans also have to be made not only on how best to use the building but how to staff it. It seems like we are in a wait-and-see transition period, but, in actuality, now is a really important time for the public to have its say in how the Powhatan County Parks and Recreation Department is going to grow and mature. The county is in the first phase of developing a parks and recreation master plan to help make those decisions. The first phase is a needs assessment survey that has been sent out to a “statistically valid” portion of the county in the mail to find out what is most important to Powhatan’s citizens in terms of recreation. If you received one of those surveys in the mail, it’s really important to fill it out and turn it back into the county as soon as possible so they hear from as many citizens as possible.

If you didn’t receive a survey, you can still have your say. The county made the survey available in an online format that can be filled out by any resident. This data will be considered along with the official survey as Pros Consulting moves forward on preparing the master plan. The link to the survey is: https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/PowhatanCountyParksandRecreation. The survey will be open through May 24. After the survey results have been compiled, a report will be presented at the June 4 meeting of the

Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, Ramona Carter, director of public works, said. The second phase of the project, which is a potential CIP (Capital Improvement Plan) project in fiscal year 2020, is figuring out how to pay for the programs citizens say they want and creating a comprehensive master plan outlining how to get there. The cost of facilities and staff to run programs is an important factor in these discussions. When you ask people what they want, the obvious first answer for many in Powhatan will be more rectangular field space. That is a given. But that is not all parks and recreation can be. I have worked in communities that had fully developed parks and rec departments incorporating programs for people of all ages and interests. Just to give you an idea of where all this could potentially go, the first question of the survey asks you to rank how important each of the following items are to you and members of your household: small neighborhood parks, community gardens, walking and biking trails, equestrian trails, off-leash dog parks, skateboarding parks, baseball fields, softball fields, covered picnic areas, football fields, lacrosse fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, pickleball courts, outdoor basketball/volleyball courts, gymnasium, swimming pools/water parks/splash pads, open space conservation areas/trails, boating and fishing areas, disc golf course, community center, large community parks, environmental education center, adventure area (ropes course, zipline, etc.), meeting rooms/training spaces, performing arts venue, internet café, and shooting ranges (archery, target shooting). As this question shows, a parks and recreation department can cover a huge spectrum of offerings and activities. The county has created a resident-driven approach to making decisions about the future of Powhatan’s parks and recreation. But that only works if residents step up and participate. hesively. She said the students felt like strangers and could be “cliquey.â€? Those first years were focused on building the students’ Advanced Placement (AP) level skills, as well as their ability to self advocate and hold themselves accountable for the challenging and heavily formatted program ahead. During their junior year, things started to change as the students learned to trust and depend on each other, Post said. “We started to become not just peers but friends. We were growing from what we had been during middle school and forming deeper friendships. Through this ACA program, we were able to be with one another for longer periods of time and it just helped those blossoming friendships,â€? she said. Junior year is when the students started dual en-
rollment classes and experiencing what it is like to carry a college workload, Post said. They were learning the value of study halls, trust, and communication. Rissmeyer stressed how important punctuality and multitasking skills were in their senior year as they had to balance their workloads with the rest of their lives. As a cohort, the students really came together in their senior year and became a family, including spending time together outside of school and learning about each other’s lives, Rissmeyer said. They have come a long way from how they described themselves in the beginning – “work proximity associates. The process it took to get them to that point will help them later in life as they enter other environments where they have to build good working relationships with people.
The students each earned 64 college credits before high school graduation, the experience of college-level content, and a college degree, John Ringstaff, assistant principal, said in a separate interview. “Each cohort has a different personality. This group benefited from experiences shared with the first cohort to graduate in ways such as managing time and how to study as a group - traits that normally don’t develop in students until they are in later years of college, he said. All 22 of the students have plans to continue their education at a twoor four-year college, and the ACA program will help some more than others. Hald, who plans to attend the University of Richmond, said that because the school is private, none of the credits she earned are expected to transfer, but she is negotiating with the school.

Powhatan Boys Tennis to states! Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor POWHATAN - After the first-throughthird-seed playoff singles matches wrapped-up, several of the Powhatan players stepped onto the tennis courts and commenced practice with one another. Even after Ben Wojcicki’s match point clinched the first-round regional team victory for Powhatan over Louisa, the players weren’t leaving; they kept the ball moving across the net, continuing to get in the reps. That’s a routine sight prior to games, head coach Levander Kelley pointed out. Before every home match, Powhatan’s players practice for two hours “so that everyone is included and no one is left behind,” Kelley said. “And the progression just continues,” he added, “and they get on the other ones: if they’re not doing it correctly, they actually make the corrections in practice and everything.” That progression carried Powhatan Boys Tennis to its first-ever state tournament and an appearance in the regional final. “We come out here, we play our best every day or at least we try to…but we’re always out here practicing,” Brendan Pfab said. “Two hours each day is rough, but it’s worth it in the long run.”

tight-knit group,” he said - and he sees that community-like aspect as being a principal element of Ferrum’s wrestling program as well. He also likes that it’s a small school; it’s nice and rural, and he likes that - he likes the outdoors. McMillin is looking forward to taking that next step - which will definitely mean improving his conditioning even more, he noted, since college wrestling bumps up the regulation time of a match from 6 minutes in high school to 7 - and he’s determined to become an All-American. “If I get All-American once, I want to do it again,” he said. “If I can be a national champ, that’s what I want to be.” His biggest goal is to be the best version of himself in college. “I’m looking to just get to the highest part of that podium that I can get to with the best of my abilities.” Especially with being brought up into the Powhatan wrestling community from a young age, had McMillin been in any other county, he doesn’t think that he would’ve wrestled. He had wrestling friends from college who came to watch him sign on May 16. The family-like Powhatan Wrestling program really did play a huge part in McMillin winning states, placing at the state level multiple years, progressing to the collegiate level of the sport and doing as well as he has, he said. “It really helped me have truly a different bond with wrestling,” McMillin

The United States Disabled Golf Association was founded by Jason Faircloth, a golfer with Cerebral Palsy who played in the Disabled British Open in 2011 and 2012. The organization hosted its inaugural tournament in Orlando, Florida in 2018. The inclusive event featured players with physical and intellectual impairments and golf handicap indexes not exceeding 30. Golfers with various impairments including amputations, blindness, Cerebral Palsy, MS and others competed. “Independence Golf Club is proud to host this important championship,” said Giff Breed, president of Independence Golf Club. “We’re excited to welcome incredible golfers of all abilities. At Independence, we strive to be so much more than a golf club, and we look forward to showcasing the friendly grounds of the Club to all of the athletes, spectators and volunteers.” Jack Berry, Richmond Region Tourism’s President & CEO added: “The Richmond Region serves as a host destination for all types of sporting events showcasing the talents of athletes with all abilities. Colby Cheatham The three-sport athlete will be contributing his fielding, hitting and possibly pitching talents to Mary Baldwin University’s first-ever NCAA-level baseball team. “It’s really cool to just be part of an inaugural season,” he said. “I can’t wait for this and it’s going to be really fun the next few years.” His future coach at Mary Baldwin left a great first impression on him. “He got me on campus and made sure he stays in touch,” Cheatham said. “I really like the coach and he’s really awesome.” He looks to work hard and set the standards high for the people who come after him. In addition to helping his Powhatan Baseball team go 11-6 in the regular season, Cheatham also placed 4th in the 145 weight division of states with Powhatan Wrestling, and he helped his Powhatan Football team achieve a winning season of 6-4 in 2018. “All three sports that I play...it teaches me that hard work is just the most important thing out of all of it,” he said. “The more you work, the better you’ll be and the more successful you become.”

And then, playing at Patrick Henry in the regional semifinals, the Indians made program history, battling the Patriots all the way to the last doubles matches to edge their way into the state tournament on a final score of 5-4. In singles, Powhatan’s top 3 cleared its matches as Brendan Pfab battled past Blake Boschen 6-3, 7-6, Jacob Pfab rallied from a 7-6 loss to Holt Oley to win a pair of 6-4 sets and Ryan Steinruck routed Samuel Dibble 6-2, 6-1. Singles ended in a 3-3 tie as Lance Finnegan defeated Connor Lindhjem 6-1, 7-5, Mason Gelletly battled past Ben Wojcicki 6-4, 2-6 and 6-1 and Connor Cappellino defeated Michael Washburn 6-3, 6-3. In doubles, Brendan and Jacob defeated Boshon and Oley 6-4, 6-4, and while Gelletly and Cappellino overtook John Varel and Henry Adkins in 3 sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-3), Steinruck and Lindhjem delivered the decisive victory, overtaking Dibble and Finnegan by rallying from a 4-6 first-set loss to win 6-3 and 6-2. The Indians ended the regional tournament as runners-up to Hanover, who won 5-0. Powhatan’s senior class this year, honored at the Indians’ home match versus Hanover on May 10, includes Brendan, Lindhjem, Wojcicki, Henry Adkins, John Varel, Cole Vonderharr and Jeremy Dodd. This group of seniors, Kelley noted, has brought both leadership and belief. “They bought in to leaving a legacy,” he added. “It’s not goodbye; it’s: I’m going to leave you with something that’s going to enhance this team, and hopefully you will… leave something that’s going to enhance [the team] and will continue to grow, so they’re looking forward to that, that they can actually come back and see these guys compete on the state level.” With Powhatan Boys Tennis, there’s a really strong sense of community, Wojcicki said. “Ever since 9th grade, this has always been a place where I want to be,” he said. “It’s always a place where I look forward to at the end of the day – I can just go and play some tennis and just be part of the team. “I think it’s the same for a lot of the guys, that: it’s not even really that much of a grind anymore. It’s just something that we do and it’s something that we enjoy.” Coach Kelley feels blessed to be at Powhatan. “I have a great bunch of kids, a great bunch of supportive parents,” he said, “and I couldn’t ask for anything else.”
she attended her cousin’s graduation at West Point, and they did “the coolest little ceremony,” she recalled, where the graduates threw their hats into the air and the children were allowed to run out and grab a hat. Since then, she’s held on to that hat... And the call to serve has been strong ever since. “I’ve always wanted to go to a service academy - I’ve always wanted to serve my country,” she said. And with the United States Merchant Military Academy (USMMA): “The program is great, Coach [Kyle] Simensky is fantastic and I really look forward to - after my 4 years of schooling - going to any military branch that I choose.” With USMMA Women’s Lacrosse, Van Buskirk is joining a standout NCAA Division III Skyline conference program that won the Skyline Championship and went 17-0 prior to taking a narrow 13-11 defeat in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Having played defense for her travel team and midfield for Powhatan High School, Van Buskirk is excited to bring that two-position perspective to the collegiate field. One of 6 seniors who played all 4 years of Powhatan Girls Lacrosse’s first 4 varsity seasons, Van Buskirk has not only gotten to see the sport grow and mature at her school, but she’s helped her team achieve a winning season in 2019. “It’s really come to fruition - when I first started, we barely had enough to field a team,” she said, “and now, we’ve just got all of this opportunity and I just
see all this growth - it’s really cool to see as a senior all of these freshmen and the depth...it’s amazing to see.”
Jarrett Tronge The multisport athlete and stateplacing standout wrestler is looking forward to elevating his athletic career to the collegiate level and walking-on to NCAA Division I Virginia Tech’s Wrestling team. He signed his verbal commitment on May 16. “It’s an awesome step, it’s an awesome place to be for the next 4 to 5 years and wrestle,” Tronge said. “It’s a way to get better and progress. It’s an awesome college, awesome people. Looking forward to it.” When he first started wrestling his junior year, Tronge didn’t realize he’d get to the point he’s reached today. But in that short span of time, he’s gone far. A fiery and determined competitor on the mat, Tronge won match after match in the heavyweight division and won his last match as a high school wrestler in Fairfax to place 5th in the Class 4 state wrestling tournament. “Hard work did it,” he said. Tronge was also part of Powhatan Football’s 6-4 season in 2018. For Tronge, being a part of the Powhatan Wrestling team was “life-changing.” “The coaches and the teammates and the practice partners - Linwood Hill and Jacob Moss, me and them every day just going at it, making each other better - it was an awesome time.”

Girls Soccer dominates Orange County By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor POWHATAN - She went crashing to the ground. Powhatan senior Katlyn Hicks, having just clipped the ball, collided with the goalie and fell past her. She rose from the ground smiling… …as the ball had bounced the rest of the way into the net. Her dramatic goal followed a wellplace rocketing shot and preceded a turn-and-finish to not only give Hicks the hat trick, but also lift her Powhat-
an varsity girls soccer team into a 3-0 lead within the first 17 minutes of game time. Powhatan dominated the rest of its Senior Night, winning by a 10-2 landslide over visiting Orange. Hicks led the way with 4 goals overall. For the Indians, it was a resounding conclusion to their 2019 regular season. The Senior Night festivities were heavy with smiles, laughter and tears as the Indians celebrated the contributions of nine seniors: Hicks, Kaila Cook, Maya Rottmund, Celine Lugo, Faith McNeel, Kyla Greenway, Rachel Mueller, Jen-
nah Jarosinski and Katie McCarthy. “Those ladies are first class – without a doubt; all nine of them just came out, answered,” Powhatan head coach Jared Rottmund said. “These girls really made the program, they really did – true leaders…just so respectful and I ask them to come out and hustle, and they leave their hearts on the field…day in, day out.” Cook earned the hat trick on three fast breaks, Maya Rottmund scored twice and Lugo made the Indians’ 8th goal of the contest.
Powhatan Softball routs Albemarle 18-2 By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor POWHATAN – The Indians racked up 12 hits and pitchers Sarah English and Ellie Barton combined for 10 strikeouts in an 18-2, five-inning triumph over Albemarle on Powhatan Softball’s Senior Night. “In my mind, when you can come out and hit the ball hard, you set a tone, and that’s what we ask the kids to do – makes it a lot easier on defense,” Powhatan head coach Marie Crump said. “I was pleased with the way we came out…they gave us some walks, we were pa-
tient at the plate, we took advantage of that, and that’s good; we didn’t go after bad pitches.” Powhatan sprang out NICK VANDELOECHT/POWHATAN TODAY to a 4-0 lead in the first Powhatan Softball on Senior Night honored inning, scoring all 4 runs seniors Briana Hensley (above), Gabby Moore against 2 outs. Senior (below, at left) and Lindsey Elam (below, at right). Briana Hensley walked to first base, moved into scoring position off the sacrifice of fellow senior Lindsey Elam and came home off of an RBI single launched by Kayla Davis. “They’re hungry, they’re humble and they’re smart on the field and you can’t ask for anything better than that, man,” Coach Rottmund said. “It’s just awesome, and I will miss every one of them.” But the season’s not over yet. The Indians (5-10-1) look to take the momentum of Thursday’s 10-2 victory into postseason play on May 21 against King George. “If this is how we go into regionals,” Coach Rottmund said, “I’m really looking forward to it.”
Night game, Hensley, Elam and Gabby Moore were honored for the progress and development they’ve made as part of the program from the beginning all the way to now, and for the hard work that they’ve put in to be a major part of Powhatan Softball’s team. “This year they’re doing a great job with their leadership,” Crump said. “Everybody has a role, and they attack that role and they’ve embraced that role, and the seniors have done just that…for this team to be successful, it takes every single one of us, and that starts with the seniors, and it trickles its way down. “I’m very proud of what they’ve done not just this season, but all the way through their career at Powhatan High School,” Crump said of the seniors. “They’ve made a huge impact on the softball program and
hopefully they’ll continue to make that impact, and I’m just very proud of them; they’re great young ladies, they work hard, I’ve enjoyed very much coaching them.” Against Albemarle, Hensley batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored 3 runs, Elam had a walk and a run scored and Moore scored a run and hit an RBI single. Davis batted 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored, English batted 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, a double and 2 runs scored, Maddy Hayden batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and 3 runs scored, Rileigh De Weese had a hit and 2 RBIs and scored a run and Savannah Johnson batted 1-for-1 and scored 2 runs. Barton, who stepped into the pitcher’s circle in the 4th inning, struck out 6 over the final 2 frames. Powhatan (13-5) wrapped up the regular season on a narrow loss to Orange County.

POWHATAN – While Senior Night was held two weeks prior, the Indians’ May 14 matchup against Albemarle marked the final regular season home game for seniors Evan Dodd, Jacob Dowdy, Jacob Taylor, Andrew Worthington and four-year varsity play-
ers Corey Palmore and Jared Somerville. “Those two guys alone are truly the bedrock of our team,” head coach Joe Niles said of Palmore and Somerville. “I can’t say enough about how hard those guys both play, what great teammates they are – it’s like having 2 other coaches on the field a lot of the time. It’s going to be hard to see those guys go…hopefully we’ll be
able to keep playing for a little bit.” With postseason seeding pending, the Indians (9-5) hope to halt a 3-game slide and bounce back from a 16-6 regular season home finale loss to Jefferson District opponent Albemarle. “I think the big thing for us is we’ve got to be more disciplined on defense; we’ve had way too many penalties,”
Niles said. “Especially in the district that we play in, where the teams are as good and disciplined as they are, we can’t be a man down against those guys.” Ethan Niles scored Powhatan’s first 2 goals in Tuesday’s contest. “He works hard…I tell a lot of the guys: You come out on the field and see what a guy does during a game, but you

Senior Tanner Ritt, who had a hit and scored a run, threw the final pitch of the game to force the final out. “Just let them hit it,” Ritt said of his approach. “Let the defense make the play.” Also at the plate for Powhatan, Connor Woodel batted 2-for-3 with RBI singles in the 3rd and 5th innings, Tymmie Hart batted 2-for-3 and Caleb Kersey scored 2 runs. Powhatan’s Senior Night game celebrated the contributions of seniors Hart, Ritt, Jacob Frame, Colby Cheatham
(run scored on Tuesday), Aidan Voorhees (1 hit), Tyler Woods and Trevor Waters – “some of the best teammates I could ask for,” Eike said. He noted that they do everything the coaches ask and “show up every day and work hard.” “The seniors have been a big part of what we do the last few years,” head coach Gregg Conner said. “They’ve kept the tradition of what we do: they carried it on and they’re passing it on to the young guys.” In addition to strong pitching and defense, Conner praised the Indians’ timely hitting in Tuesday’s win and
said that they did the little things they needed to do. “That’s what it takes for us,” he said. The Indians with the victory bounced back from a 3-game slide that extended back to May 3. “It’s huge coming off the last 2 weeks – we hadn’t been playing our best ball – but it’s always good to come out with energy to get a win like this,” Eike said. Powhatan on May 15 went toe-to-toe with Midlothian on the Trojans’ field, but came up shy of the victory as the Trojans won 4-3. Ritt batted 1-for-1 and Woodel batted 1-for-2.

This Memorial Day, honor all of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom M
emorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.
Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War.
On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday
changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the South began to recognize it as well.
Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere
between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active, reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country. Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual reminder of the military’s efforts. Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home. Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National &
Community Service (serve. gov). Help to maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves. Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community. Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides. Visit a military museum or historic site. Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time for one minute. Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org). —MetroCreative

How to help veterans in need
M
METROCREATIVE PHOTO
illions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways. Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans. Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost. Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locally-based Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated. —MetroCreative
