The joint program sponsored by Powhatan County Public Library and Powhatan County Public Schools kicked off on Tuesday, June 4 with the help of some talented Powhatan High School students. POWHATAN – The moment Sandy Hopkins was diagnosed with breast cancer, her world stopped. Sitting with her husband Andy in that doctor’s office on May 26, 2017, Hopkins said she felt like she was having an out-of-body experience as she learned her diagnosis. “I was watching and listening but not really there to what they were saying. I have two kids and all I could think of was my family in that moment,” said Hopkins of Powhatan. Having caught the cancer in Stage 1, Hopkins did not need to undergo chemotherapy or radiation. But the least the doctors recommended was a single mastectomy with the choice of having a double mastectomy. “I asked them what my odds were. What did the numbers look like? They said left untreated, more than likely I would be back in two years for the other side. It was a no-brainer. I want to be here. Life is too beautiful,” Hopkins said. The surgery worked – Hopkins was in remission and had begun reconstruction surgery. She had beaten cancer, and life was all the sweeter for it. But then in September 2018, her mother Naomi Neel was diagnosed with endometrial cancer at the age of 71. Hopkins took leave from her job as a fifth-grade teacher at Flat Rock Elementary School to stay with her parents in Lynchburg during her mom’s treatment, but the cancer metastasized to her bones. Neel passed away on Dec. 1, 2018. “She was an incredible woman and fought her fight with grace, dignity and incredible faith all the see RELAY, pg. 6

Pride display at middle school sparks debate By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – A display in honor of National Pride Month in June caused some controversy last week at Powhatan Middle School.
A display recognizing National Pride Month was put up in a case in one of the school’s hallways by students in athe Multicultural Student Association and approved by school administration. The display, which went up on Monday, June 3, received pushback from
some students and parents. The display contained several flags – gay pride, bisexual, transgender, and asexual flags – and historical information about how the Pride movement came about. The display was taken down the next day, although this was part of a plan to
dismantle all bulletin board displays at the end of the school year, said Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent. Jones said the school did receive complaints from about eight parents, who were told by Dr. Samantha Martin, prinsee PRIDE pg. 4

On May 11, a small team from Powhatan participated in the Susan G Komen 5K on Brown's Island. Jennifer Campbell said her son Noah had the idea to participate to support his fifth grade teacher, Sandy Hopkins, whose kindness and positive personality has been such a blessing for her students at Flat Rock Elementary School. The Campbells created the team Powhatan Fights Cancer to support the county's cancer survivors. An invite was shared with the schools in the county. While the team was rather small, Campbell said the memories they created that Saturday morning exceeded all expectations, and they were able to raise a total of $948.80. The team consisted of (left to right) Liv Leiter, Hunter Hopkins, Candy Salyer, Jennifer Campbell, Haley Hopkins, Hayden Somerville, Parker Smith, Sandy Hopkins, Noah Campbell and Erin Smith.

student Kyleigh McCoy and the rest of the cast. In between performances, Dr. Tracie Omohundro, assistant superintendant for instruction, shared a valuable lesson with the young readers in the audience by reading Ryan T. Higgins’ book, “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates!” More than 200 people attended the kickoff at the library, which was a great start for the summer reading program, librarian Caroline Shoenthal said. “It gets them excited about reading. It provides a free opportunity for cultural enrichment for kids who might not otherwise get it,” she said. In addition to the performances, a pizza dinner sponsored by the PTOs of the three PCPS elementary schools was also a big hit, Shoenthal said. The groups will do the same for the summer reading finale on July 25. Donna Allen of Powhatan, a PCPS second grade teacher, brought her son Dylan, 8, to the kickoff as she does every year. He likes to read, especially nonfiction books, so the program is an extra way to keep him engaged in reading throughout the summer. Both of them liked the performances at the kickoff party, she added. “I thought it was fantastic. I loved the variety they used with show choir and the acting and keeping them engaged with the games and treat bags. I though they did a marvelous job,” she said. Victoria Boland of Powhatan brought her 8-year-old twins Kamden and Keyleigh for the first time. After moving to the county last year, she said they got a library card a few months ago and have been excited to check out the summer reading program. “It was fabulous and fun. The kids had a great time. I hope this gets them excited to read more during the summer instead of watching TV or playing on electronics,” she said. Skylare Berube, 9, of Powhatan attended the event with her grandmother, aunt and two cousins

cipal, that this was an inclusiveness effort by the students and that there was no educational information disseminated by the school or activities related to the display planned in conjunction with it. The school has a family life curriculum approved by the state and the school board, and that is the only time educators “talk about sensitive issues related to sex, Jones said. “Really this was something the students put up to reinforce our core beliefs about inclusiveness and welcoming all students and making them feel safe and secure in our schools, he said. Although there wasn’t a display last year, Martin said the school did have morning announcements in relation to Pride Month without incident or complaint. This school year, the Multicultural Student Association has put up a different display in the same case ever month since school started, she said. Other displays were put up in honor of Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and more. “It was by no means a conversation
about sex. It was a conversation about being inclusive to all students., Martin said. “It was more about facilitating an overall positive school community knowing that we have a diverse student body and supporting diversity through an inclusive school community. When a photo of the display was posted on the Facebook page of the Powhatan Community Forum, it drew hundreds of comments, ranging from mild statements of support or disagreement to more heated arguments and name-calling. Many were in support of the display and called it a step forward in teaching love and tolerance. Some argued the display is about promoting equality, not sexuality. Some opponents of the display said it did not belong in a school, especially a middle school, as discussions about sex and sexuality should start at home and the school should focus on academics. Some also said it was about pushing a political agenda. Opposition to the display was often met with accusations of homophobia or being close-minded. One middle schooler who drew attention for supporting the display was Kendall Humphreys, 14. Although she was not involved in putting up the
display, she did look at it and read some of the historical information. She said the display was well put together and not intrusive. Kendall said she normally wouldn’t have commented on a Facebook post like that, but after seeing some of the negative remarks, she felt she had to speak up. “I’ve definitely seen countless numbers of events where kids a part of the LGBTQ+ community were picked on and made fun of. So, having this wall is something that could help them feel accepted. Students/kids are always told to treat people with respect, so I really don’t understand why when it comes to this topic it’s any different, Kendall wrote on Facebook. She added that after the display was put up, some students chanted in the halls “gay is not OK and she even heard “burn the gays. Jones said a small group of students were caught walking down the hallways chanting derogatory remarks. They were not disciplined but were brought in for “a counseling activity about sensitivity and tolerance. “I think it is a good teachable moment. Regardless of the subject matter and whether you agree with it or not, words do mater and actions do matter, Jones said.

grass Band, Kyle Davis, Maddie Leitch, Pumphouse Blues, and East of Hollywood. “The atmosphere we are looking for is to try to bring a variety of music genres. Instead of going to a country festival or a rock festival, we have a mix for everybody. Instead of going and hearing the same type of music over and over again, this is going to be a variety to expose people to different music, Daniel said. Tickets to the event are $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. Children under 12 are free. A VIP ticket, which includes special seating, is $25 in advance or $30 at the gate. Daniel and his co-coordinator, Kip Williams, are both Powhatan residents and musicians – Daniel plays with Pumphouse Blues and Williams with East of Hollywood.
The friends started talking one day about booking their bands and came up with the idea of hosting their own festival. Since they are both from Powhatan, they wanted to make sure the county could benefit from the festival as well as showing off the charm of the community to visitors. There are always things going on in the city on pavement where it is hot, so they wanted people to see how it is in Powhatan – to come and sit on the grass and enjoy some great music, Williams said. “We felt if we were going to have a music festival, we should help the community and hold it in Powhatan. There is already a bunch going on in Richmond. We don’t need to put it there, he said. People should bring their own chairs and blankets to sit on during the day. Organizers are also supporting local business-

Training a new generation of local firefighters
Firefighter 1 and 2 classes participated in live building fire training on May 18 and 19. Organizers combined the night time volunteer class and the Powhatan High School class for these burns, which were conducted in Blackstone’s burn building. Pictured are all the students, instructors and volunteers that assisted with PHOTOS COURTESY OF POWHATAN COUNTY FIRE AND RESCUE the burns. Students went through four burns on Saturday and four burns on Sunday. During the burns, students perform fire attack evolutions on first floor fires, second floor fires, below grade fires, search and rescue operations, and rapid intervention team training (team to rescue trapped firefighters). The Firefighter 1 and 2 classes consist of 165 hours of classroom and practical skills training, including 41 hours of hazardous materials operations training. The live building fires are the final skills the students perform before they take their state written and practical skills test. The night class students who participated were William Baird, David Bellot, Corry Young, Jonathan Glass, Jackson Kieran, and Christian McIntosh. The high school student participants were Sean Smith, Mathew Sounders, Ryan Townsend, and Grayson Walker. Volunteer helpers who participated were Carroll Smith, William Willersdorf, Paul Shaw, Joe Shupp, James Sullivan, Chris Corcoran, and Michelle Saunders. Instructors for the event were Phil Warner, Pat Schoeffel, Taylor Goodman, Tom Berry, Ken Emerson, Sam Nunnelly, Bubba Sydnor, and Leon Sydnor.
Students fight back against cancer Contributed Report Pocahontas Elementary School staff and students recently joined together in the fight against cancer for the 11th annual Mini-Relay for Life. Despite the forecast of storms, the school was able to complete Opening Ceremonies and a Survivor Lap outside on April 26 before moving to the gym for the remainder of the day. Students lined the blacktop and cheered as the survivors and their caregivers made their way around a makeshift track. During the two weeks leading up to MiniRelay, students had the opportunity to purchase Links of Hope, which were linked together by grade level. This serves as a grade-level competition and kindergarten was announced as the winner at the event. Students were also able to purchase Battle Bags in honor of or in

PHS Cosmetology students excel at state competition Contributed Report PHS Cosmetology students performed well at the Virginia SkillsUSA State Competition. The Virginia SkillsUSA State competition was held on Friday, April 12 at the Convention Center in Virginia Beach. This year, Michael Payne and Patricia Butler were the top two nominations for SkillsUSA Advisor of the year. Butler was named the Virginia SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year. This was a two-day event which included more than 130 competitions. Awards won by her students are as follows: Hannah Blair – first place Cosmetology Technical exam with the highest score in the state. This exam is very similar to their Boards. Candace Farmer- first place Employment application process. She filled out a timed application, submitted a portfolio, and participated in an inter-

view. This win qualifies her to compete at the SkillsUSA National competition being held in Louisville, Kentucky in June. Erika Jones – second place Cosmetology Technical exam. Erika was among only six students from across the Commonwealth to receive a silver medallion in this contest. Hannah Blair – sixth place Esthetics. Hannah demonstrated on her model (Crystal Gravley): a skin analysis, a basic facial, daytime makeup, and fantasy makeup. The theme was “Optical Illusion.” Brittany Ellis – seventh place in job skill demo. Brittany demonstrated on her model (Areanna Wilson) how to do a basic facial, so the judges try skill when she finished her demo. Each of these ladies placed first during the district competition in order to receive the opportunity to compete at the state level.

The Powhatan Relay for Life event was held at June 1 at Powhatan High School. The day brought together a range of teams walking in support of or in memory of a loved one affected by cancer. The day featured music, games, wacky,, laps and plenty of fundraising for the American Cancer Society. The day was both a celebration of the survivors who have beaten cancer and a remembrance of those lost.

she didn’t,” Hopkins said. These moments and feelings were all at the forefront when Hopkins and her daughter, Haley, walked in the Survivor’s Lap at the Powhatan Relay for Life event on Saturday, June 1. It was their first Relay event, and the

outpouring of love they witnessed there and the feeling that she had been gifted with a second chance at life meant the world, she said. “Walking on that survivor walk, it was so powerful to see the community surrounding all of us who have gone through that journey of cancer. Hearing them cheer the fact that we were there – that we survived – was powerful,” Hopkins said. Stories of survivors, stories of those who didn’t survive their battles with cancer, and stories of those going through treatment right now – all are

important reasons people who participate in the annual Powhatan Relay for Life have so much passion for the cause, chair Carol Beach said. Attendance was lower than usual at the event on June 1 inside the gym at Powhatan High School, but that didn’t dampen the spirit or the determination of those who came. The local chapter of Relay for Life has set a goal for 2019 to raise $70,000 for the American Cancer Society. To date the group has raised $63,561, but they are determined to reach their goal by the deadline in early August, she said. In addition to the fundraising the teams did leading up to the event, they raised about $6,000 on June 1. This year, the local chapter adopted the theme of “Send Cancer Out to Sea,” which participating teams embraced with various underwater decorations, Beach said. As always, the teams enjoyed the various wacky laps throughout the day – meant to keep them energized and en-
gaged during a long day of walking around the track inside the high school gym, Beach said. “We kicked off our first lap with a Go Live Lap. We had everybody log into their social media and do a live video to let people in social media know what was going on,” she said. Some of this year’s other themes included a Patriotic Lap, Send Cancer Out to Sea Lap, Wacky Hat Lap, Sock it to Cancer Lap, and Celebrate More Birthdays Lap. As always, the most emotional parts of the day were the Survivor/Caregiver Walk, which featured about 50 survivors, and the Luminaria Ceremony, Beach said. People had a chance to purchase luminaria bags that were lit up at about 8 p.m. Each light represents a life—a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. “We turned the lights out. We did a couple of laps with all the lights out. The luminaria were lit up with glow sticks. There
was no music in the background. It was just all of us on the track together walking and taking it all in,” she said. Hopkins said she was especially touched that one of her students, Matthew Betz, not only bought bags in honor of her and in memory of her mother but came to the event to walk with her. She participated with the Flat Rock team, Suzi Strong, which was formed to support a staff member currently battling cancer. “I think there is unity in numbers and support within numbers. It its standing up and standing together in a battle that not a single one of us are immune to regardless of age or anything. We are all susceptible to it. I think it is really important to join forces,” Hopkins said. To donate to the Powhatan Relay for Life fundraising efforts, visit http:// www.relayforlife.org/ powhatanva. Model respectful behavior when debating By Laura McFarland News Editor
Last week brought a sense of déjà vu to this writer. A little over a year ago, somewhere between 100 and 150 students at Powhatan High School participated in a national school walkout in March 2018 to remember the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and make it known that violence in schools is unacceptable. The Powhatan Today covered that peaceful protest, which featured students quietly leaving their classrooms, gathering to honor the fellow high schoolers who were killed or injured that day and then returning to class just as peacefully. It was a moving but mostly uneventful showing of solidarity. But, when posted on Facebook, the reactions it saw were through the roof. Many people were in support. Others accused the students of being brainwashed with propaganda. Some saw it as a personal attack on their gun rights. Some resorted to name-calling. Some flat-out told the young people to sit down and shut up because they were too young to have an opinion of their own. It was disheartening to watch the madness of the Facebook phenomena unfold, regardless of the long-held real-
ization that many people use social media as a shield to say things they would rarely dare to say to your face. I mention this, because it seems to have happened again, although not on the newspaper’s Facebook page. A debate sparked on Powhatan Community Forum’s page about a display that went up at Powhatan Middle School for National Pride Month, which falls in June. The display was instigated and designed by the school’s student multicultural club and approved by school administration, according to Dr. Samantha Martin, principal. The display was the last in a long line of monthly displays the students created to promote inclusiveness in the school. The display was put up on June 3 at the school but taken down the next day because all bulletin board displays were removed at the end of the year, according to Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent. Just as with the school walkout, there were a variety of reactions last week to this display. Some were overjoyed about what they saw as a step forward in the local schools toward inclusivity and sending a message of tolerance and love. Others said that topics such as sexuality are something to be discussed at home, not in the schools, and especially not in a middle school because they are too young. Those were the mild re-
sponses – even tempered – with reasons being stated and moving on. Then there was the other end of the spectrum – on both sides of the argument – that got into ugliness and namecalling. Those people could have taken a lesson from some of the middle schoolers who commented on the page – again, on both sides of the argument – about how you can have a free and open debate without resorting to attacking someone. It is a valid argument that middle school is a big time of change and upheaval for young people and sending a message to some students who may feel isolated that they are not alone is important. Showing support to a minority group does not automatically equate to denigrating or attacking the majority. At the same time, I get that parents can be overprotective and want to be in charge of how and when their children are exposed to issues about sex and sexuality. I add the disclaimer that a 2D display of a few brightly-colored flags and some historical facts dealing with the fight for equality (not content about sex) probably pales in comparison to the lessons about sex and sexuality that children are learning from other students, social media, books, television shows, movies, advertisements – everyday life really.
It’s the end of the school year. The display is down. Soon the next social media phenomenon will be taking over – actually, it probably already has. If anything positive can come out of this, I hope it is a continued teaching moment about modeling how to treat others – even those you disagree with – in a respectful manner. Also, don’t discount a young person’s ability to be effective and a positive light to others because of their age. When I was a preteen, one of my personal heroes was a young person who had a huge impact on this country. A boy named Ryan White was diagnosed at the age of 13 with AIDS, a highly stigmatized disease, which he contracted as a result of contaminated blood he received to treat his hemophilia. My sister, who was not a fan of reading, plowed through a biography about the young man, who had passed away a few years earlier in 1990, and first introduced me to his story. She told me about how he fought for the right to go to school in the face of ignorance and ugliness; raised awareness and education about AIDS; and would have traded all the fame he earned as a result of his fight just to be a normal, healthy kid and not one who was dying. L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Schools a place for education, not creating polarization Dear Editor: This week, school administration approved and displayed a controversial bulletin board at Powhatan Middle School titled “National Pride.” There are major problems with this display: “National Pride” is a clear misnomer. It deserves a red-ink strikethrough by a grammar teacher. Use of this title is a politically hi-jacked, and deliberately misleading, term. The banner should have been titled “LGBTQ Pride Month” or something befitting its actual purpose. PCPS should not sponsor any such political displays, much less those with faulty grammar. Instead, the curriculum should demand that students learn to clearly describe their positions, without veil. Schools should avoid politically-charged displays that distract from the curriculum. I don’t want political agendas being the focus of our schools. Education should be the focus, particularly during end-ofyear testing. Under the feel-good umbrella of claimed “inclusiveness,” this political banner and display quickly, and predictably, divided people. The school principal stated to me that this banner was an effort to "make the LGBTQ students feel included and safe," and that the display was “completely without political agenda.” This display ended up demanding a lot of energy from parents and students and school officials when their focus should be on finishing their classes and testing well. PCPS should avoid segregating specific groups in favor of education on civil debate for all. More than just the LGBTQ community is feeling uncomfortable, rejected, or unsafe in schools. Forever, kids have been insulted and bullied by others because of weight, looks, skin color, economic status, allegiance, voice, talents, disabilities, families, culture, opinions, etc. How about those kids? By deliberately singling-out only LGBTQ kids as the victims, PCPS has left behind many others, with raised hands, saying: “What about me? Can I be included and valued, even if I
disagree? Do I get a display case for my issues?” This week provided the implied answer: No. Unless you agree with staff opinions, you will be targeted by adults as a "known bully.” You will be publicly namecalled and insulted by the lady in the office. Your parents’ integrity will be called into question; and you will be identified as a bigot by staff. Schools should be educating, not creating platforms for polarization. A better way would be to educate our students on the merits and practices of kindness, even in the face of opposition; to argue and articulate opinions without name-calling; to revere free speech and the sacrifices protecting it, even of those opposed to you; to respect the humanity of individuals, regardless of opposing political beliefs. PCPS Administration needs a better protocol for handling this, and other, issues. People have been hurt on all sides of this issue by the lack of forethought by administrators of PCPS. Elected school board members left emails unanswered. School staff very publicly cursed, demeaned, and threatened citizens and students, with whom they only disagree, online. Kids chanted slurs in the hallways and planned counterprotests. This initiative was an abject failure in every way, unless division and enmity was the goal. I suggest a better way: the practice of kindness. Avoid dividing people into groups; bring them together according to commonality. Respect, and be kind, even during debate. Avoid name-calling and threats – a social black-eye for both sides. PCPS officials should cease segregating our kids across political and individual divides. hood. It was solidly blue collar but I didn’t know that, because I lived there. The homes were affordable; the lots mostly a quarter acre or less. Most people there were busy with work, family and church. As the “paper boy” you learned which homes sheltered infirm or incapacitated family members; which people slept late and which were up before dawn; which cars were new and which ones never seemed to move from their street parking spaces; which houses seemed to have money waiting by the door to pay the monthly newspaper collection bill and which ones often had no money to pay the bill; which homes produced volunteers when the firehouse alarm sounded and which houses could use more TLC. You knew which houses had Gold Stars in the window and which homes would leave you a small gift on holidays. You learned where the friendly kids lived, and where the bullies lurked; where the mean drunks lived, and which houses had dogs that bit. Some people had more money; some had less. Some people had more education; many had less. Now, 60 years later, after a lifetime of law practice and reading the newspaper, I am not convinced that expensive neighborhoods are significantly different. They harbor the same trials, toxins and triumphs as the neighborhood where I delivered newspapers. Chesterfield and Henrico both have affordable housing neighborhoods, yet people continue to move into them and pay their taxes. Large areas of rich, famous Fairfax County were built on quarter acre lots. I think what causes the resistance to affordable housing is an understandable fear; people have found something lovely here, and they don’t want to lose it or have it changed. But change it will. None of us can stop change; we can only adjust to it. Or better, using our human ingenuity, we can plan for it. That planning needs to accept that affordable housing is a vibrant and valuable part of our community and one we will be glad to have in our future. There are laws more compelling than the Code of Virginia. One of them is to love our neighbors; at a minimum, that means making room for them. John Rick Powhatan County

OWHATAN – Brandon Eike can’t see one facet of the game that he likes more than the other. And it’s easy to see why. Whether he’s helping lock down the infield at short stop, stepping up to the plate or taking to the hill to pitch, he’s a threat to make something good happen for his Powhatan Baseball team. This past season as a junior, he showed he can bat 3-for-3 with two doubles and strike out 15 batters in the same game, as he did in the Indians’ 5-1 win over Albemarle on Senior Night. That versatility shows in his commitment to Virginia Tech for both pitcher and a hitting position... ...and also in his earning First Team All-Region for both short stop and pitcher, as well as 2019 Region 4B Player of the Year honors. Eike has been a fixture on the diamond since he was 4 years old. He played rec league ball in his early years, competed for Powhatan Middle School,
POWHATAN – Earlier in that game at USC Upstate, Logan Amiss wasn’t finding success at the plate. His coach came up to him, said he looked like he was timid, and told him he needed to be aggressive and trust himself. Amiss followed his coach’s advice on his next trip up to the plate – over which the opposing pitcher left a changeup. He took a good swing at it. When he returned to the dugout, the coach told Amiss: That’s more you…keep doing that… …because Amiss had just landed his first career home run as a college baseball player. He was far from done. Playing in 34 of VCU Baseball’s 58 games this year – and starting in 19 of them – the designated hitter and catcher assembled a 27-hit, 23-RBI season as a true AMISS freshman. “The confidence that the coaches had in me played a huge role in how I did this spring,” Amiss said. “Getting in there, I felt comfortable that they had trust in me to do that job and be in there multiple times throughout the year.” Joining VCU on the heels of a successful high school senior season with Powhatan, Amiss during the fall – prior to the start of the regular season – impressed in his plate

gotten to see who each individual was, what they’d go on to do and where they are now – “playing college sports and everything and doing all this great, ridiculous stuff.” “Seeing everyone do that…when you’re younger, you’re almost in awe of it.” And when Michael Kemp achieved BSH Male Athlete of the Year in 2019, he pretty much had that same feeling. “I was honored to the fullest extent,” the senior said. “I was in awe of myself – I didn’t think I was capable of getting that award.” Kemp had immersed himself in each of the three sports he played for several years, starting basketball and soccer when he was about 5 years old and football when he was around 10. For Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, he played all three - both football and soccer since 7th grade and basketball since 5th grade – all the way through his senior year. He’s taken immense pride in playing for BSH. “I don’t think I could’ve had a better experience competing for the school,” Kemp said, “because I’ve done it for so long, and I think there’s a certain attitude that you have playing for a smaller school.” The football team, with its 7-3 winning season in 2018, played a huge role in representing the school this year, Kemp pointed out, and while he described being in the spotlight as “pressing because we had to keep being successful,” he and his BSH Football teammates were able “to be presentable to everyone and make it known that our school exists, and that we’re here, and we’re not a joke – we’re not a small, little itty-bitty school that doesn’t mean anything to anyone.” Kemp had initially started competing with the idea of winning and playing for the coach. But as he’s come along throughout the years, he started to realize that: “It wasn’t really about the coach or winning – it was more about the teammates to me.” He’s gotten a lot of his inspiration from playing for his teammates and

appearances while facing his own team’s pitchers. He noted that the coaches saw situations in which he could be inserted into the lineup. And when he was put into the lineup in the early spring, Amiss had the opportunity to make something happen; when he did – notably in that Feb. 24 game at USC Upstate in which he homered for the first time – he kept getting more opportunities to hit for the Rams as his freshman season progressed. His first 34 games in the collegiate landscape saw him bat .284 overall with 8 extra base hits. He peaked at .308 on April 3 when he hit his second career home run and scored twice at Longwood. The game before on March 31, Amiss batted 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a double against Davidson, and had early-season statlines of 3 RBIs apiece at UCF on March 15 and against VMI on March 26. He homered for the third time in 2019 while facing Richmond in an April 20 doubleheader. Amiss transitioned from winning season to winning season, as he went from helping his Powhatan varsity baseball team reach the 2018 state tournament – the first time the Indians had done so in his years there – to being a part of the VCU Rams winning the Atlantic 10 regular season championship and going 39-19 on the season.

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Michael Kemp drives the ball in a 2019 soccer match.
“I love playing the game - I love the game to death. But I love my teammates even more.” - Michael Kemp BSH Male Athlete of the Year not for himself; back when he was named to First Team All-State this season for football, BSH Football head coach Shawn Pickett was quoted as saying about Kemp: “You’d have to get a forklift or something to drag the kid off the field…because he’ll do anything for any one of these kids on that field.” “I love playing the game – I love the game to death,” Kemp said. “But I love my teammates even more.” He’s earned unconditional respect for them, having seen how they make the same sacrifice as him on the hardwood, on the gridiron and on the soccer field. “You just want to put in as much effort, maybe more than they’re putting in, because they’re putting in that amount of effort for you…personally I felt the need to give back to everyone that was working hard to help me,” Kemp said. “I worked just as hard as
“We became a close group really quickly and I thought we always had each other’s backs,” Amiss said. “We never gave up on each other…we knew that, whoever was on the mound or whoever was at the plate, was going to get the job done. We never really wavered off of that, and we just had confidence in each other – we had a certain trust because we were so close really quickly.” The biggest change that Amiss observed from high school to college was the amount of time spent playing and practicing. The schedule was much tighter with a much heavier load of games, going from an average of 2 to 3 games a week to 4 and 5 a week. The starting pitcher from every team he and his team faced, he observed, was really, really solid – “maybe there was a few guys in high school that were like that, but it was: every day, you were facing one of their better guys – stuff that you don’t see every day in high school.” And then there was the general thrill of playing at the Division I level. “When you first get there, it’s like: ‘Man, I watched these people on TV,’” Amiss said, “and even some of the kids that we were playing against this year, I’ve seen on TV and heard about, and now you’re playing with them – some of them you’re beating and some of them you’re losing to.” But the 2019 Rams were confident in their ability to win against anyone in the country, he said, and they
they did – maybe even harder – to give back to them.” For football, Kemp – despite his being one of the smaller players on the field – feels that the aggression and “sense of reckless abandon” with which he played really helped him out and pushed him to achieve First Team All-State for defense. In basketball, he had the ability to be a voice of reason on the floor. “Because it’s a high school sport, everyone’s a teenager, sports are very emotional and everything…having the voice of reason on the floor to try and keep everyone in check’s really helpful” – Kemp said – “especially when it’s someone who’s played for the school for a lot of years…” He brought physicality to the soccer field and emphasized having the right mind set. “We didn’t have success this year like we had had in previous years,” Kemp said, “but that kind of physicality and mind set of playing through fouls and losing players and all of that kind of adversity…the ability to keep playing through all of that is very important, and having younger teammates see that and be inspired by that can push your team to be incredibly successful.” When it came to playing three
showed that multiple times against teams like no. 6 North Carolina on Feb. 27 (118), UCF on March 16 (4-3), Richmond on April 20 (16-3) and Duke on May 5 (5-3). “It just came back on our coaching and our abilities,” Amiss said. “We knew we were talented.” And the reoccurring statements Amiss recalled hearing from his coaches – that they trusted the players, that they were proud of how they played and how they fought during games – really kept the team together and kept the team winning games. Going into next season, Amiss is focused on elevating his defense so he can have another way besides DHing of getting into the lineup. He’s also focused on helping his Rams – which despite winning the regular season saw their year end early in the Atlantic 10 Tournament – meet the team goal of getting better and better with each season. “Coach was really proud of our body of work and how we played in the regular season,” Amiss said. “It really was just unfortunate that a great body of work can come to an end that quickly.” But the Rams know what they aspire to be, he added, and they know what they’re going to have in the future. “For me – for some of the younger kids on the team – we got a taste of what a good season looks like and what we need to mimic in the future for us to have good regular seasons” – Amiss said – “and maybe what we need to do differently in the postseason.”
sports, the most attractive aspect to Kemp was the challenge. “I really enjoy challenging myself and I don’t like to do things the easiest way possible,” he said. “I could’ve played football in the fall and soccer in the spring and cut out on basketball and have my time to myself, but I have teammates to play for and I had a commitment made to the team, and I wasn’t going to let myself just sit around all winter and do nothing but hunt. “I wanted to make it so I had to manage my time and manage my school [work] and make sure I made it to practice every single day and was prepared for games in every single sport,” Kemp said. “I think it’s helped me out in ways that I can’t even say – prepare myself for what’s coming after high school.” Kemp is leaving for the United States Marine Corps boot camp on July 15. “I am ecstatic,” he said. “The day cannot come soon enough for me to start this adventure.” For anyone who’s reading this and considering playing a sport: do it – Kemp emphasized. “It is a one-of-a-kind experience,” he said. “It will set you up for success in any facet of your life.”

team on her shoulders. She was there for all of the players both on and off the field, she said. At season’s end, Hungate was named the 2019 BSH Female Athlete of the Year. “It is an honor to be called female athlete of the year because a lot of people could have gotten the award, but they chose me and words couldn’t describe how I felt when I heard my name being presented at the awards ceremony,” Hungate said. “This meant everything for me because I worked hard every year to be better for the team.” Throughout her years at BSH, Hungate played volleyball, basketball, cheer and softball – the latter of which she’s been playing for 10 years, since 4th grade. With softball, she enjoyed how competitive games would get during the season.
The team captain led her Knights from behind the plate at the catcher position. “I love catching because, during games, you can see everything that happens in the field; it is like you’re the eyes for the team. I also like catching because you are always in action throughout every play.” Hungate was the lone returner to the BSH Softball program, which before her senior season was last on the field when she was a freshman. But playing softball in her senior year at BSH was memorable for her, and her team made it the best season she’d ever played at the school. “Throughout the season,” she said, “I felt like the team was family to me.” After graduation, Hungate plans to attend Old Dominion University and specialize in elementary education. She also plans to join several club sports at ODU.

Powhatan Softball’s All-Region players Staff Report POWHATAN - Four Powhatan High School Softball players recently earned First Team All-Region honors in Region 4B. Junior Rileigh De Weese was named to First Team for first baseman, sophomore Kayla Davis for third baseman, senior Lindsey Elam for outfielder and sophomore Sarah English for utility player. De Weese, who is committed to UCONN, was a threat to homer throughout the season. The junior in postseason play hit a go-ahead grand slam in a 9-7 win over Chancellor and a 2-run homer in the Region 4B semifinals at Hanover. De Weese ended the season batting in the three-hole, ahead of fellow powerhitter Kayla Davis. The sophomore batted cleanup and added another powerful bat, finding her way to big hits and homering for team as well at points during the season. Elam, a senior, batted second in the lineup and found different ways to get on base throughout the year; she was also a lockdown defensive player, excelling at reeling in the flyball on big plays in right field. English hit her first career home run in the Indians’ 2019 regular season game at Hanover and added a powerful bat to a strong middle of the lineup for Powhatan. English’s talents went beyond her ability with the bat, as she also shined in the pitcher’s circle as Powhatan’s leading arm with junior Madeline Peloke sidelined for much of the season due to recovering from shoulder surgery. All four players were instrumental in another strong season for Powhatan Softball despite losing a lot of senior leadership from a 2018 season that saw the Indians reach the state final. Powhatan in 2019 won 15 games against 6 losses and reached the Region 4B semifinals.

joined the high school varsity level as a freshman and has been playing travel ball since he was 9. He’s started every game with Powhatan High School since 9th grade, originally playing at third base before shifting over to short stop last year. He didn’t really get many innings last year on the mound – he maybe had about 5, just because Powhatan’s starting pitchers were really good last season, he said – but the hard work and play of his teammates around him reinforced the merits of work ethic: just keep working, and you’ll get your turn. “When your time’s ready – even when you’re not getting to pitch as I wasn’t as much as I wanted to last year – always stay working,” he said, “and when your time comes, be ready for it, and that’s what I did this year.” It showed. He was ready for the major bump-up in his inning count from under 10 last season to 52 in 2019. He had multiple 15-strikeout games – he also fanned 15 while tossing a 1-hitter in the Indians’ 11-0 shutout win over King George in the first round of regionals – and he’s been able to help his case on the mound with reliable hitting. His fastball velocity this year reached a top speed of 93 miles per hour, and it’s consistently sat between
87 and 89. He’s been working on his slider this year, focusing on his two-seam moving more and staying centered on that one universal goal: throwing strikes. “When you throw strikes, you get outs,” he said. “Throwing strikes, they’re going to either hit it or strike out, and you’ve got to rely on the defense.” In his plate appearances on offense, he steps up to bat with the mindset of hitting the ball up the middle, reacting on pitches in or out and sitting fastball. In working on his game and “trying to get better every single day,” he’s focused on getting in his hitting reps and defensive work. He’s also placed emphasis on the weight room since the 8th grade, striving to work out 6 times a week. For pitching, it’s about long tossing, arm care, flat grounds and making sure his arm’s in top shape at all times, with his Powhatan coaches emphasizing those steps. And through playing for a coaching staff that collectively features over 120 years of coaching experience, he never stops learning. “It’s like an encyclopedia of baseball,” he said, adding that there’s “always something new to learn about every facet of the game, no matter how good anybody is.” The rising senior is still more than a full year away from stepping onto the collegiate field as a player on the Vir-
ginia Tech Baseball team. With Tech, he loved the coaching staff, he likes the homey feel of the school and he felt that it was the place for him. “And I’ve always wanted to play at the next level,” Eike said, “and I felt like, staying in-state there, that was just the best fit for me.” He’s not sure yet as to the position he’d be playing at Tech on the hitting side – that will be decided when he gets there, he said – but he’ll be heading to the NCAA Division I level with that rare two-way commitment as both a pitcher and a hitter/fielder. “It’s awesome – it gives me an opportunity to go either of both ways,” he said while noting: “In the ACC it’s really hard to be a two-way player, so as I get to college I’ll probably go one way or the other, but it’s a great opportunity for it to be open like that where I can go one way or the other, what they choose once I get there.” But before then, Eike will take on his final season of high school next spring. He came into this year’s campaign having reached states with Powhatan in 2018 as a sophomore. “It adds a little experience,” he said. “You’ve been there and you know what that feeling’s like to pass on to your teammates who are younger and have not experienced that yet.” This year, he was part of a young team overall that he felt was able to learn how to play well together and
mesh together well as the season went along. He and his teammates battled out to a 12-7 record and reached the regional quarterfinals – not as far as the previous season when he reached the state quarterfinals. But not being able to get as far motivates him going into his senior year. “It really just gives me something to push forward to to next year, knowing that we don’t want another ending like this year,” Eike said. And with a young team comes several experienced returners for next year. After Powhatan Baseball showcased that pretty much anybody and everybody on the roster could play – and play well – the team will look to continue its show of depth as most of 2019’s infield is expected to return in 2020. While Eike said it was awesome to be named Region Player of the Year, awards like that are not his main focus. “It’s not something I really think about,” he said. “I just like to go out and play my game and whatever happens, happens.” This offseason, Eike is looking to work on his speed, keep up the weightroom grind and improve in every facet of the game. “I’m never satisfied with where I’m at,” he said. “I always want to get better, and I just want to be the best person on the field at all times – that’s just my mentality.”

Stegner, Rissmeyer top of Class of 2019 at Powhatan High School By Laura McFarland News Editor
POWHATAN – Sarah Grace Stegner and Ashley Ann Rissmeyer lead the 2019 Class of Powhatan High School as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, with grade point averages of 4.6364 and 4.5679. Stegner of Powhatan is the daughter of Christine Stegner. She is currently enrolled in the University of Virginia Echols Scholar program for the college of arts and sciences, which allows her to be exempt from course requirements. She intends to double major in chemistry and environmental science (specifically atmospheric) with a minor in Spanish. While a student at the high school, Stegner was founder of the PHS Planeteers; president of La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society), Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), and Girls Learn International in her senior year; treasurer of the National English Honor Society, and a member of the National

Honor Society and National Science Honor Society. The PHS Planeteers was the best part of Stegner’s high school career because she could apply the knowledge she learned in her AP
Environmental Science class to make not only PHS as a school more sustainable but also the community by aiding in the organization of the Powhatan Earth Day Celebration, she said. “Along with our amazing sponsor, Ms.
Jennifer Gardner, and other planeteers, I have had the privilege of creating a recycling program, which is collected every week by dedicated volunteers. We also host an annual locker cleanout where we help our amazing custodial staff clean out lockers. What we clean out of the lockers will be either donated or recycled,” Stegner said. Outside of school, she volunteered at the Powhatan County Public Library for a year until she was hired as a part-time substitute clerk aide in July 2018. Through the honor societies of which she is a member, she also “had the privilege of teaching short lessons to the elementary schools.” Stegner added that it has been quite a journey to graduation, but a rewarding one. She praised the teachers who supported her in the past four years at PHS as well as her mother and siblings. More than anything, high school taught her never to limit herself, she said. She entered the see PHS, pg. 12

He played soccer in his ninth to 12thgrade years and football as a senior. He was in Science Club in 10th grade and Latin Club from 10th to 12th grades. He participated in Boy Scouts for three years in Vietnam before coming to the United States as a freshman and participating for four years here.
Seniors came together in times of need As I sat down to write this speech I reflected on all of the steps that we’ve taken to get to where we are today. For me, these steps started the moment I entered into high school as a nervous ninth-grader who had almost zero self-confidence. I thought that in order to be successful you had to follow all of the rules and only focus on school. However, I was wrong. My classmates showed me that it’s possible to have fun in high school and achieve success. I watched as they made amazing artwork, performed in plays, and claimed victory in sports, all while having a good time with the people around them. The BSH Class of 2019 has taught me that having fun is just as important as being serious, and for that I thank you. However, it isn’t just fun that has gotten us to this day. It’s the countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears that we’ve dedicated to high school. Going through high school is most definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done. There were days when it felt like the work was never-ending and I felt like giving up. But, all I had to do was look to this moment and realize that it would all be worth it. Now, we are all here before you today as stronger men and women because we never gave up even when it got tough. I’m so glad that all of the years that we’ve spent studying and working have finally paid off. As we all go our separate ways, I hope that we can look back on the time that we spent together and understand just how important it was. I think that sometimes we are so eager to move into a new chapter of our lives that we forget about the old chapter. Don’t forget about the people and the choices that brought you to where you are today. In school we’ve

always been taught that you must understand the basics of a subject before you can understand the more advanced parts. I find this to be true with high school and the next chapter of our lives whether that be college or enlisting to serve your country. This next chapter is the advanced material and the things we learned in high school are the basics that we need to understand it. It is now up to us to take these foundations and use them to build a future for ourselves. While thinking about the future may seem daunting, remember that with it comes many more experiences and opportunities to grow as a person. However, never forget that worrying will get you nowhere. I learned this the hard way in high school. I can’t tell you how many times I worried about an assignment that was due or what people thought of me. Now, as a high school senior, I’ve realized that if you spend all your time worrying, you miss out on a lot of things. Anxiety and worry tend to keep us from trying new things and achieving our true potential. The rigors of high school have hardened us into strong individuals who are confident in ourselves and who yearn to fix a problem instead of ruminating on it. Now, as I once again think back to that ninth-grade year, I realize just how quickly time flew. I remember thinking that graduation seemed so far away. Boy was I wrong. I feel as though I’ve just turned around and here we are. I realize now that we all had such different paths in school. Some people chose to be involved with various aspects of school including athletics, the arts, or academics. But the one consistent thing that we all wholeheartedly involved ourselves in was BSH. All
of us strived to make BSH even better during our time here and I can say without a doubt that we left our mark. We showed people that even through conflict and struggle we could overcome and work together as a unified class. For instance, when our classmate, Sean McQueen, was hurt this year, everyone put their differences aside and worked together to lift him up. I’m so proud of our class in that we always stayed true to helping each other in times of need. Whenever someone was down, someone else was always there to lift that person right back up. Therefore, I hope that people are able to remember our class as one that always looked out for each other. However, I hope that our legacy at BSH is one that expands beyond just kindness to one another. I hope that people remember us for the things that we stood for. I believe that the BSH Class of 2019 is one of the most stubborn classes ever. I’ve never met another group of people that are so driven in their convictions and are so intent on standing up for what they believe in. This just speaks to how amazing this class is. I’m confident that as we move forward we will all remain successful in whatever we do, while still remaining true to the values that BSH has taught us. With that being said, I’m honored to be the valedictorian of the BSH Class of 2019. I also want to thank all of the family members, teachers, and faculty who have helped to shape this class into a group of truly remarkable individuals. Lastly, I want to wish the Class of 2020 good luck, you have a hard act to follow. Thank you. Cameron Hipps’ valedictorian speech

Thank you so much for allowing me to speak! Let's graduate! Sarah Stegner’s valedictorian speech
Dear Class of 2019, We made it, it's been real, but we made it. We have submitted our final Schoology assignment and saw the rocket fly for its final journey. We have been congratulated by our final SOL for reaching the end of a never ending assessment. We have heard the final fuzzy noise followed by the bell ringing for its last time. We did it. We made it, we are here in this gymnasium and each and every one of you made it. It is incredible. Our class is one of strength; when an issue arises we do not just sit back but we voice our concerns. We do not wait for others to act, but we rise up whether it's through creating clubs, partaking in walkouts, or participating in civil debates; we listen and respond. The greatest instance of this was when our class faced its greatest tragedy – the loss of one of our students, Karmen, and we as a class rose up by donning red for her and opening the dialogue up about the importance of mental health. Though I did not know her personally I know from her friends that she was an artistic and kind woman and I would like to have a final moment of silence for her as the Class of 2019. Please join me. Thank you. Class of 2019, please never lose your capacity to care – it is your greatest asset. Empathy is so impor-

school thinking her focus would be solely on studying Spanish, but in the years that followed, she developed a love of world history, environmental science, chemistry, and math analysis. “Now, I feel certain I must major in chemistry because it brings me so much joy and I could use it to study pollutants that plague our planet. However, I am walking into college allowing myself to have a plan, but not be constricted by it,” Stegner said. Rissmeyer of Powhatan is the daughter of Karen and Don Rissmeyer. After graduation, she will be attending the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences with an intended major in systems engineering. She will also be dancing alongside the Virginia Dance Team next year. While attending PHS, Rissmeyer was a member of Powhatan High School Indianettes Dance Team (captain, 12th grade); the National English Honor Society (vice president of communications, 12th grade); Mu Alpha Theta (club editor, 12th grade); La Soceidad Honoraria Hispanica; Science National Honor Society, and National Honor Society. She was also part of the Class of 2019 cohort of the Advanced College Academy program, which saw her graduating from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College on May 12 with an Associate’s Degree in Social Sciences. “Through the Advanced College Academy program, I have had the opportunity to experience academics at a college level, which has allowed me to build necessary skills earlier than most so that I am ready for a college workload,” she said. Outside of school, she also volunteered through St. John Neumann Catholic Church and danced at Premiere Dance Studio. Rissmeyer said she is forever grateful for the teachers and coaches she had at PHS who prepared her for both her future academic and artistic endeavors and added she could have “never reached this point without them.” “I’m so excited to be attending college at the home of the NATTY CHAMPS! And I can’t wait to experience everything Charlottesville has to offer over the next four years,” she said. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.
