superintendent said. As it stands now, the upcoming 2019-2020 school year will end on June 12, 2020. The next school year – without calendar changes – is set to start on Sept. 8, 2020, and get out for the school year on June 18, 2021. That means summer 2020 would last 12 weeks. With the two-week adjustment the school division is considering, the pre-Labor Day start would be Aug. 24, 2020, with the last day of school on June 4, 2021. That would mean a 10-week summer break in 2020. Jones said it is luck that next Labor Day is the latest day it could possibly be. The school district is “basically getting an extra week anyway because we are starting a week later.” Omohundro pointed out with the upcoming school year’s schedules that several of the surrounding jurisdictions already have pre-Labor Day starts: Buckingsee PCPS, pg. 8

POWHATAN – Even after a year of serving as the Powhatan Christmas Mother, Pat Lyons still sounds in awe when she talks about the community’s generosity. About this time in 2018, Pat and her husband Larry were preparing for their first official duty as the 2018 Christmas Mother and Father at the county’s annual Labor Day Parade. Although Larry had been helping load presents on pickup days, the couple had no other previous involvement with the program that provides gifts at Christmas to children and seniors in need. They admitted then they would be leaning heavily on the dedicated workers of the Powhatan Christmas Everyday Committee to help them settle into the roles. They were right. “The prior Christmas Mothers were a tremendous help. If I had

Arabella toured Richmond area schools when she moved with her family to the city in 2012. According to her grandparents, “She fell in love with Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School. The beautiful 40-acre campus, the faculty, the students’ vibe and small class size, were the reasons she chose to attend the school starting in the eighth grade.” Arabella died of an undiag-

The department understands that the dedication required of its members in the execution of their duties as public servants, EMS providers, and firefighters often leaves their families little time or money for higher education. In order to help department family as well as “our extended families” (the immediate family members of our members), the Fire and Rescue Department has established a scholarship awards program. She had a wicked sense of humor and could sum up a situation with clear, mature insight and leave everyone wondering why they had not seen it that way.” Arabella was born March 31, 1998, with a lung dysplasia that can cause breathing and heart problems. “Because of her lung condition she could not run fast or for long and she fatigued easily. That absolutely did not stop her. She never complained – ever. She would play as hard as she could and then put herself to bed,” Kathleen Brower added. As her family knew, others crusaded, Bella just made things happen. She loved and cared for animals. Justin Stocker was recognized at the Powhatan County School Board’s May 14 meeting as the recipient of the John Marshall Foundation Teacher Award. He received the award on May 1 at the Law Day Luncheon. One middle school and one high school teacher is selected for the award each year. Teachers are selected based on their knowledge and enthusiasm for the U.S. Constitution as evidenced through activities inside and outside of the classroom. Stocker submitted a personal statement and letters of reference. He is shown here with Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, and Joe Walters, school board chairman.

With that story in mind, the senior class of 2016 painted the senior rock with ‘Be a Flutterfly.’ The new Lower School playground under construction now will be christened as Flutterfly Park and dedicated to Arabella’s Class of 2016 on Sept. 13, 2019. them after her death. The Browers have all the letters her classmates sent to them after she died. Her entire class attended her memorial service and the Class of 2016 dedicated the yearbook to her. They each made T-shirts, which they wore during a car wash to raise money for a donation to the SPCA in Arabella’s name. “From her classmates’ letters, you get an idea of the teenager she was, a good friend with a kind and generous spirit, and had a great sense of the funny and interesting in life, Kathleen Brower said. “When Arabella was a little girl, she was standing in line at a party store with us, waiting for her turn at the cash register. Pointing to a balloon with a butterfly on it floating above us, she said ‘Look Grandma, a flutterfly.’ She went on to explain that was what she wanted to be when she grew up, Kathleen Brower

They will match dollarfor-dollar up to $150,000 a year for all parent, grandparent, alumni, business and foundation grants above an aggregate total of $75,000 per year. “We have lived all over the world and seen a lot of different schools, said Keith Brower, a retired army colonel. “At Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School there is a unique aura; it’s like coming home every time we are there. At school events we have been extremely touched by the appreciative comments and gratitude displayed by many BSH parents and students – it is a special place. Their hope is that this matching challenge will spur giving and provide access to grants from local businesses and foundations that will accelerate the

It is how we want to keep Arabella’s spirit alive at this place that was so special to her and provide the best educational experience for all the children. The private, co-ed school for students in pre-kindergarten to grade 12 was established when two independent schools, Blessed Sacrament High School at Belmead and Huguenot Academy, merged in September 1998. Lee Ware among lawmakers honored by Virginia LCV Contributed Report Every year, Virginia League of Conservation Voters recognizes individual lawmakers who have demonstrated a deep commitment to conservation issues above merely voting alongside our legislative positions. This year, Del. Lee Ware, R-65, was among the four legislators who were honored by the group.
The $7.5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline is not only a threat to our environment; if built, every single ratepayer in electricity monopoly Dominion Energy’s territory will be on the hook to fund a significant portion of the project regardless of whether it’s needed. The only thing that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requires for projects like the ACP to
move forward is a contract showing that there is a customer for the gas. In this case, Dominion is both the customer and the supplier. Legislation (HB 1718) carried by Ware this session would have given the State Corporation Commission more power to review pipeline contracts on the front end to determine whether the projects are in
the public interest, an important regulatory reform that protects ratepayers and shifts the financial risk of large gas pipelines to a utility’s shareholders. The Virginia League of Conservation Voters thanked Ware for his leadership and urged him to continue fighting for these needed reforms. Separately, the group has endorsed Ware for the 2019 General Elections.
Recognition of Achievement for Schools with Continuous Improvement PHOTO BY LAURA MCFARLAND
Four Powhatan County Public Schools recently received the Recognition of Achievement for Schools with Continuous Improvement from the Virginia Department of Education. The department presents this award to schools for actively being accredited or accredited with conditions and significantly improving academic and school quality indicators for the past three years. Powhatan Elementary, Pocahontas Elementary, Flat Rock Elementary and Powhatan Middle Schools all achieved this recognition. The Exemplar School Recognition measures the performance of students from competence toward excellence in reading, mathematics, and science, and on other indicators of school quality consistent with the Standards of Accreditation. To qualify for Continuous Improvement recognition under this program, a school must invest in student engagement as evidenced by meaningfully increasing the attendance of students for the past three years. The principals of the four schools were recognized at the Aug. 13 school board meeting. Shown are Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent; Constance Deal, Powhatan Elementary; Tom Sulzer, Pocahontas Elementary; Tanja Nelson, Flat Rock Elementary; Dr. Samantha Martin, Powhatan Middle, and Joe Walters, board chairman.

opened their hearts and wallets to the Christmas Mother program. “I will tell you that I was just floored. The individuals and the companies were so generous. Everybody kept telling me they would be. But they really were very generous,” were the first words out of her mouth. Then she talked about the clients, who were so incredibly gracious and thankful for the program and what it does. “When the clients picked up their gifts, I went out and met every one of them. I felt like that was something I should do,” she said. “They were so appreciative. A lot of them were crying and asking, ‘Can I hug you?’ That in itself made it worthwhile.”
SECOND ANTIOCH BAPTIST CHURCH
While Larry maintained he just did what he could to help his wife as Christmas Mother, he marveled at the work that goes on behind the scenes every year to make this program a reality. He commended the people who shop for gifts, plan all year, take registrations, fill orders, wrap presents, and help with pickup days and deliveries. “I was super impressed with the amount of work that goes on year around and especially at Christmas time with shopping and wrapping the packages. The organization to get all that done never ceases to amaze me,” he said. The year has been a busy one for the couple: two parades, numerous fundraisers and speaking engagements, working with and planning with the committee to make it all happen. “Every place that I
spoke, they were so gracious. They welcomed me. They fed me,” Pat said. “And gave money,” Larry chimed in with a grin. There were moments of great triumph and some concern in the last year. The Christmas Everyday Committee successfully campaigned to gain a permanent space inside the former Pocahontas Middle School. Last year, they stored presents and did the shopping in the band room of the school and wrapped and sorted them for pickup and delivery in the basement of May Memorial Baptist Church. When the group takes possession of the former school’s old cafeteria – hopefully this fall – it will be the first time in a few years it has had all operations in one place. “We anticipate it will be a lot smoother in one
place. Pickups will take place there, too. We are not clear on how that is going to work yet, but it will be much better in one place,” Pat said. In December, snow almost threw a spanner in the works when a pickup day had to be rescheduled. Pat recalled some of the frantic phone calls she got people missing their pickup day – further proof of how important the program is to the community. Mary Harrison, Christmas Mother 2016, said Pat and Larry’s business expertise aided the group in excellent organization in a time when “we were challenged with limited space, spread from May Memorial to the middle school. Their sense of customer service exemplifies the Christmas Mother spirit.” Jo Goodman, Christmas Mother 2017, said the Lyons did a wonderful job

GRADUATION
Samuel Tilden. During a special ceremony on Monday, Aug. 12, Massa recognized Ethan Johnson, the only student to participate, for working hard this summer to finish the last courses he needed so he could graduate a year early. Massa said he has been fortunate to get to know Ethan for the last several years, starting when he first saw the youth play basketball for the school. At the time, Ethan’s father, David, was an assistant coach for the basketball team alongside coach Steve Washburn. “Ethan is a smart and determined young man. His true skills is not just basketball or academics, but his ability to be kind and to make everybody he comes in contact with feel special,” Massa said. “Many mornings as I

We make sure to personalize the learning of our students to best fit their goals,” Massa said. “If a student needs more, or less time to graduate, we want to make sure that they are recognized for their hard work and dedication. I think our small summer graduations are another example of what makes PCPS a special place to learn, teach, and work.” This year’s 2019 summer graduates were Ethan Michael Johnson, James Hunter Moore, Stacionna Pearle Morris, Liam Lee Ortwine, Calin Joseph Pantoni, and Christian

students with the skills and knowledge they need to potentially save lives – their own, their fellow firefighters, and victims, Sydnor said. And that means they have to be held to the same standard as any adult man or woman going through the same course. “They physically have to be able to handle the hose, climb the ladder, get victims out. They didn’t get any special treatment. I got a 105-pound dummy for them to drag around,” Sydnor said. “Just because they are a teenager, the training they are getting is real life training. We wouldn’t want to make it any less than what they need to do.” Six students took the Firefighter I and II courses during the course’s first year in the 2018-2019 school year and four completed the class and tested out. Ten new students are gearing up – their gear is literally on order – to start the class in the fall, Sydnor said. The first year, there were some hurdles to overcome as they worked out the logistics of offering the class at the high school, but the students met the challenges with hard work and determination, signaling how much potential the course could have, he said. “At the beginning you wondered how they would do. New group aims to save lives of large animals By Laura McFarland News Editor

ll I could think about was a horse in a pool. In the Aug. 14 edition of the Powhatan Today, we ran a story about a local group of people who are laying the groundwork to start the state’s second technical large animal rescue. The group hasn’t officially launched yet – that is supposed to happen in April 2020 – but they are working to train their members and gather the equipment that could be needed in a rescue situation with a large animal. Although I was already familiar with several of the founders, I first met them representing the Central Virginia Technical Large Animal Rescue on Aug. 3. I visited Sugar Magnolia Horse Farm, which is owned by Powhatan resident Alexis Bray, because she was offering a basic handling class for animal control officers from Powhatan as well as Goochland and Chesterfield counties. As I talked to organizers Donna McNamara, Allison Vornkahl, and Sgt. Christine Boczar, I came to understand how much of a passion project this is for all of them. McNamara and Vornkahl have already done a great deal for the community through the Powhatan Equine Rescue League, which helps rescue abandoned, neglected, and abused horses. And Sgt. Boczar and her fellow officers at Powhatan Animal Control work every day to help stray and abandoned animals around the county. But they want to go a step further and be prepared to rescue large animals in need that are in emergency situ-
ations, whether it is a horse, cow, llama, or alpaca. When a truck hauling a tractor-trailer carrying large animals is in an accident or a horse gets stuck in the mud and can’t get out on its own, the members of Central Virginia Technical Large Animal Rescue want to have the knowledge and resources to be of help. Now, I am going to date myself a little bit here. When Sgt. Boczar first called to invite me out to the training, she told me a little bit about this new group’s

purpose. I am not going to lie – the first image that popped into my head was that of Artax, the beloved horse of Atreyu, stuck in a swamp in “The NeverEnding Story.” I was a horse-loving kid when I first saw that movie and I cried so many tears when that horse died.
I’d seen quicksand gags played for laughs in cartoons, but this moment hit me hard. Fantasy aside, the second image that came to mind was one many of you may remember. On April 11, 2017, a 32-year-old quarterhorse named Belle became trapped in a swimming pool and had to be rescued. Dozens of emergency workers and other volunteers worked together to help the horse escape from the pool with only one cut that needed stitches and some other superficial abrasions. In that instance, the many people who came together to save Belle’s life didn’t have special equipment or know-how. They worked through ideas, listened to one another, and were able to successfully mount a rescue of a frightened horse that didn’t know what was happening. I don’t like to think about how badly that situation could have gone – either for the horse or the individuals who were putting themselves at risk by helping rescue an 1,100-pound, scared animal in a very unpredictable situation. Thankfully, it didn’t go that way. And with a designated group that has a broader knowledge and the right equipment, hopefully the next time a large animal needs to be rescued in an emergency situation, it also will have a happy ending. For those of you interested in learning more about the group, it will have a member meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department, 1959 Urbine Rd. Anyone interested in becoming involved may attend. You can find the membership requirements on the group’s website, https:// centralvatlar.org. L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Supporter lauds Whitt’s patriotism, service to others Dear Editor, This is a letter in support of Eddie H. Whitt for District 4 of the Powhatan Board of Supervisors. I have known Eddie for many years, and he is both a good citizen and patriot. In his career, he has worked for the Army National Guard, Virginia State Police, Net Jets, and has been the owner of E&R Honey Farms. He has always been involved in community activities and set a great example of citizenship. He has demonstrated a concern for the environment and was a founding member of the Huguenot Beekeepers Association. As a pilot, he has always done things with precision and will provide the leadership necessary to see that changes for responsible growth are done properly. I can think of no other candidate with the experience and common sense necessary for the job. I give my full support for Eddie for supervisor. T.J. O’Neil Powhatan County
Tax proposed homes to reap funds for road construction Dear Editor, Powhatan County needs to set aside funds for local road construction. Powhatan County is currently looking at approving 334 high end homes with the Ellis Farms Development and the Donnelly Creek Development. The new developments will reconstruct the intersection of Page Road and US Route 60 and County Line Road along with adding yet another stoplight to US Route 60. The Ellis Development and Donnelly Creek Sub-
division will be very pedestrian-friendly with new sidewalks along all the streets. The biggest issue though is Page Road and Manakintown Ferry Road will need a major multi-million dollar reconstruction to handle all this new traffic. Both roads have no room to pass a stopped car without going into the ditch. Both roads also have tons of blind spots, making them dangerous for cars and bikes to navigate, especially at night. Page Road in its current shape can only handle a few hundred cars a day. When they build these 334 homes, they will add at least 1,002 car trips a day to Page Road. Page Road will need to be reconstructed with two 12-foot-wide travel lanes and two 8-foot-wide paved shoulders to meet modern road construction standards. The new paved shoulders could also be called bike lanes to make Powhatan County hip among the local bike riding community and have room for cars to safely pass golf carts. They also will need to add a sidewalk to one side of Page Road and Manakintown Ferry Road because the developments will have new sidewalk systems. Pedestrians will be able to start safely walking to WalMart. Reconstructing these roads to these modern standards could cost between $12 to $25 million. Powhatan County will need to start setting aside some of the new property taxes from these new $400,000 dollar homes to pay for these road improvements. There are some possible examples of how paying for road construction could work. Property taxes on a new $400,000 home in Powhatan County are $3,520. If 30 percent of that could be set aside for road improvements that would be $1,050 a year times 334 homes in funding for road construction. If Powhatan County diverted 30 percent of the existing taxes towards roads, the new home owners in the two developments would not have their taxes go up. The catch would be Powhatan County would be collecting taxes on a $280,000 dollar home for the general fund instead of a $400,000 dollar home. Another possibility is Powhatan County could

raise the property taxes on the 334 new homes by 10 percent to 20 percent for 15 years. On top of that, they could divert 20 percent of the existing taxes collected on these homes toward local road improvements. If they raise the property taxes 10 percent to 20 percent higher than normal for 20 years, that would raise an extra $352 to $704 a year in road funding times 334 homes. This would produce an extra $121,088 to $235,136 toward road improvements a year. Over 20 years, that would raise an extra $2,421,760 to $4,702,720 for local road improvements without VDOT or Smart Scale in the picture. The home owners of the existing older homes on Page Road would not have their taxes go up if the new 334 homes had to pay an extra 10 percent to 20 percent in taxes toward road improvements. In the case of the newly forming Watkins Mill Development, which is mostly $500,000 to $1 million plus homes, the county could divert 30 percent of the existing property taxes collected from Watkins Mill for road improvements for road construction without raising taxes on them. If the new 334 homes turn out to be valued above $500,000 or more, then they most likely wouldn't need to raise taxes on them. The tax revenue set aside from these 334 homes would pay for a road construction bond for Page Road and Manakintown Ferry Road. The road funding bond would reconstruct all 2.4 miles of Page Road and all 5 miles of Manakintown Ferry Road with 12-foot-wide lanes and 8-foot paved shoulders. A new sidewalk would be built on Page Road and Manakintown Ferry Road. The road bond would also build the missing 0.8 mile section of Carter Gallier Boulevard and add sidewalks. Any new homes built along Manakintown Ferry Road or Page Road would feed into these road bonds until they are paid off. Any extra tax increases set on the new homes would sun set as soon as the road bonds are paid off. Carl Schwendeman Powhatan County

ham, Aug. 7; Amelia, Aug. 14; Cumberland, Aug. 12; Prince Edward, Aug. 12, and Goochland, Aug. 19. However, Richmond, Hanover, Henrico, and Chesterfield will all start on Sept. 3 with Powhatan. Currently, the school district’s calendar committee is examining this
issue of starting early and what it would mean for PCPS, Omohundro said. The committee could bring a recommendation back to the school board as early as September or October, or November at the latest. The school district will also be sending out surveys to parents and staff members to gather addition input. She pointed out they wanted to nail
down the issue as soon as possible in consideration of people making summer plans for 2020. After Omohundro’s presentation, board members agreed this is something the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has lobbied for on behalf of school districts to give them more control of their calendars. However, they also point-

ed out they wanted to do a thorough job of making sure changing the school calendar would be right for Powhatan. Chairman Joe Walters, who represents District 4, said he wanted to make sure the calendar committee had plenty of parent representation on the calendar committee. “This is a fairly significant change and I just want to make sure that it is what the community wants to do in terms of this adjustment to the schedule. ‌ I just want to make sure that as we talk about this, we don’t miss the voice of our parents. Survey data is good, but I want to make sure they are involved in this committee that really looks at how we go about doing this,â€? he said. Educationally, there are many reasons for PCPS to embrace an earlier start date, said Rick Cole, District 1. He added that he hopes parents will take the time to consider the issue while recognizing some might love the ideas and others won’t be crazy about it. “The bottom line is our job is education and our job is about doing what is best for students.
This calendar that we have been operating on and have traditionally operated on for the last 100 years is an agrarian calendar that was based on the need to have students work on the farm, he said.
Examining the calendar There are a number of potential benefits to an early start date that Powhatan will have to consider in its decision, Omohundro said. Advanced Placement tests are always held on the same dates for all schools, so students will receive two more weeks of instruction before they take the tests. The dual enrollment schedule and calendar for students taking courses at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College would more closely align with their schedules at PHS. The athletic season start time would be closer to the start of the academic season start time. Other potential benefits include: impact on facilities for summer use (band, athletics, shortened summer); potential for a semester break at winter
break; desire for consistency among regional divisions and neighboring counties, especially ones with which Powhatan shares employees and programs; earlier conclusion to school year, and several divisions are also considering a two-week early start. During his comments after the presentation, Cole also mentioned that getting out of school later in the summer than so many other localities can make it harder for students looking for summer jobs and students and teachers trying to sign up for summer classes. Omohundro said she has received questions from families who already had plans in place for a major event that would conflict with an earlier start time. She said the school district would work with those families. “We understand that this is a change and that we would have to work with families that made commitments prior to us making these changes for this first school year, she said. hard working.” The players do whatever the coaches ask of them on the field. They’re much quieter, yet still lead through the example they set. They’ve put in the work across the calendar, keeping their skills sharp in the offseason through taking on the indoor league, the summer league and preseason conditioning. “We’ve been together since the
middle of summer…and we just naturally bond with each other, because we’ve never really had bickering or arguing or anything,” senior multisport standout Michala Taylor said. “Everyone’s a family here.” It’ll be a season of change. The Indians are coming off a standout 12-5 season and a second place finish in the Jefferson District, but they also saw see FIELD HOCKEY, pg. 2B

fter concluding a tremendous chapter in his life, Andrew Llewellyn is beginning another. The Powhatan High School alum and recent Wingate University graduate will remain a fixture on the baseball field as he completes the transition from player to coach as a newly-added member of the Randolph-Macon Baseball coaching staff. He will assist the program with catchers, hitters and camps. “It’s just going to be huge,” Llewellyn said. “Being able to work with them and show them the knowledge I have is going to be helpful, especially with the catchers – and just get them to buy-in to what we want them to do, and hopefully get them to succeed at the highest level they can.” He’s excited to work with “such a prestigious program like Randolph-Macon,” which last season went 28-10-1 and in 2018 was a game away from reaching the championship series of the NCAA Division III World Series while also earning a program-best 38 victories. As of now Llewellyn will work with the coaching staff for a year while he completes his Master’s degree through the Center for Sports Leadership at VCU. “Just being able to...get a Master’s, it carries a lot of weight – and also being able to get my foot in the door coachingsee LLEWELLYN, pg. 4B

The 2019 Powhatan Varsity Volleyball Team.
Preview: Powhatan Volleyball By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor POWHATAN – New head varsity volleyball coach Cindy Bryant expects her Powhatan Indians to surprise everybody. “Everybody thinks: we graduated that strong group of six seniors – and this definitely will be a rebuilding year – but these girls are coming in, they’re ready to work hard, and I think we’re
going to take everybody by surprise with how well they work together,” Coach Bryant said. Without doubt, the 2019 Powhatan Volleyball unit is young. But it’s a unit with a lot of potential. “We’re really bottom-heavy, but we’re excited because that’s how you build a program towards the future – just having the young athletes coming in that are performing well,” Coach Bryant said.
Senior outside hitter Sierra Ellison has seen that her younger teammates have a lot of energy; they’re “eager to play and love being around the seniors…and getting experience,” she’s observed. “It’s a lot of new players, so getting them used to playing at this type of level is going to be fun, and just getting them exposure to different types of playing than what they’re used to,” see VOLLEYBALL, pg. 4B

Powhatan Village Run to be held Aug. 31 Contributed Report POWHATAN - The Powhatan Village Run 4-Miler will mark its 31st year as a Labor Day weekend tradition when area runners and walkers take to the streets of the courthouse (and the trail in Fighting Creek Park) on Saturday, Aug. 31, starting at 8 a.m. The Village Run has its origins in 1981 when “running” as an accepted recreational endeavor for the masses was still in its infancy in Central Virginia. There were only a handful of races on the calendar and two local runners, Phil Blankenship and Hal Hedley, decided that Powhatan could become a runners’ destination. Blankenship had come to running as a means of rehab from heart valve surgery; the beneficiary of the first races was the American Heart Association. Through their running connections, they were able to attract local and Richmond-area runners out to Powhatan, including a number of world class runners from Kenya who were attending the University of Rich-
mond at the time. In some years, the Village Run featured a mile run, a 5K and a 10K run. It enjoyed strong and loving community support, and in some years, awards included homemade pies. That support and the opportunity to run in a small village and the surrounding countryside made the Village Run a popular annual event. Its success led Blankenship and Hedley to organize a second race, a Thanksgiving morning Turkey Run 15K. The races ended in 1985 when Blankenship and Hedley moved out of the area. A group of local runners associated with Powhatan High School re-started the race in 1989 to support the cross country and track teams. It remains one of the oldest continuous running events in the Richmond area, drawing runners of all ages and abilities. The race greets new runners each fall, but what sustains it are a core group of runners and volunteers who become regulars and return year after year. In the early years, the age divisions topped out at 60-plus years
old, but to accommodate the many loyal runners who continue to defy the calendar, more age divisions, all the way up to 80plus, have been added to the annual event. To encourage family fitness and provide opportunities for parents and children to run together, the Village Run also features three Parent/Child Team award categories: early elementary (grades K-2), upper elementary (grades 3-5) and middle school levels (grades 6-8). Although the Village Run strives to raise money to support the running sports at Powhatan High School, the primary goal of the event is still to give runners and walkers an opportunity for fitness and fun in a great small town community. Race entry fees are $17 for individuals and $22 for teams through Aug. 21. Major sponsors are Dr. Tracey Spaur Family Dentistry, PIVOT Physical Therapy CONTRIBUTED PHOTO and Hank Cosby Real Estate. Supporters of Harry Conn finishes last the Village Run over the last 31 years have year’s Powhatan Village included Courtois Signs and the Powhatan Run as a competitor in Today. the 80-plus age division.
Powhatan Golf opens season with Lancer Invitational Staff Report CHESTERFIELD – Powhatan Golf opened the 2019 season with the Lake Chesdin High School Golf Invitational held Monday, Aug. 12 at Lake Chesdin Golf Club. Several teams from the Richmond City, Chesterfield County and Henrico County communities - as well as Franklin County - played 18 holes with a par of 72. Powhatan head golf coach Chris Leech said that this was the most competitive Lancer Invitational in recent memory and featured a lot of strong teams. “The guys played well in their first tournament,” Leech said of his golfers, “and all took away things that they want to work on.” Powhatan concluded invitational play with a team total of 359. Junior Connor Voorhees led Powhatan with an 84, sophomore Brandon Washburn had an 87, sophomore Adam Camp shot a 90 and sophomore Cade Van Buskirk scored a 98. The invitational team champions were the Midlothian Trojans with a low score of 310. Ester Choi made par with a 72, Joseph Weinstein had a 77, Ryan South scored a 79 and Gavin Holloway shot an 82. Medalists included Choi, Cosby’s Brian Polinchock with a par of 72, Deep Run’s Brint Hardison with a par of 72 and first place individual finisher Charlie Kennedy of Mills Godwin with a three-under-par total of 69. On Aug. 14, Powhatan scored 369 in a Dominion District match won by Monacan (305). tremendous leaders on the team - Calie Rehme, Katlyn Hicks and Dani Bigham among them – graduate this June. Overall, Powhatan is returning just five fulltime starters from last season. “These seniors have big shoes to follow,” Tyson said, “but I think they are up for the challenge.” “I feel like we’re a lot closer than we have been in previous years,” added senior defender Alicia Dern. “Even when we’re doing our scrimmages, everyone just kind of knows where they need to be and how they need to play just to help the rest of the team out.” Taylor, who played defense as a freshman, forward as a sophomore and then a little bit of both as a junior, will be combining those experiences while also still learning a new position by playing midfield as a senior. “I have a different job this year, so it’s a little different; I’m not protecting the goal or going towards it; I’m distributing” the ball, Taylor said. “It’s a different goal there, but I’m learning just with everyone else…because even though I’ve played for a really long time, every single day you learn something new, because it’s not like a known sport that everybody knows like basketball or baseball or something like that…you learn every single day, and I like having the
new position and just being able to grow.” “I am really looking forward to watching how the season progresses for Michala,” said Tyson, who has coached Taylor since she was in the eighth grade and has seen her grow both on and off the field. “She came into the season in amazing shape – extremely strong and fast…she is so versatile on the field and I am really excited about what the future has to hold for her.” The coaches are looking for senior Ella Weber to take charge of the defense in the center this season. “Ella Weber has also been working hard,” Tyson said, “and came into tryouts in great shape.” She’s excited about what she’s seeing from senior forward Erin Barney, who has had big shoes to follow in playing the same position as Bigham. Barney “always seems to be in the right place in front of the goal,” Tyson said, “and has potential to step up and score.” “She does a great job listening to feedback from both coaches,” Tyson said, adding that she’s “becoming more confident each day.” She noted that senior Ryann Overboe “is very reliable in the midfield and does a great job distributing the ball for us,” and she praised Hanna Hathaway for having “amazing stick work and a knack for scoring goals.” “It is only her junior year,” Tyson said of Hathaway, “and I cannot wait to watch her play!”
Powhatan also has a promising returner in sophomore Peyton Tuttle, who played in goal last year when Emily Stephenson got hurt. “It was amazing to see her progress,” Tyson said, “and I am excited about her future.” Senior Emily Stephenson has been a standout goalie across the athletic calendar, also contributing to the lacrosse team. She emphasized the importance of communicating with her team from where she stands in goal. “Being a goalie, you kind of have the eyes of the field…you see everything that’s going on,” she said, “so it’s really important to communicate to your defense on where to stand and where they should be.” It’ll be a different mix for Powhatan in 2019. “On one hand we have seniors that have been a part of building the winning tradition,” Tyson said, “and we also have freshmen and sophomores who have not played for varsity but show great potential. It is going to be interesting to watch how they progress and blend together this season.” The future of Powhatan Field Hockey continues to be bright, Tyson said. Two sophomores whom the program pulled up to varsity last season for regionals – Catherine Griffith and Jordan Krauss – are back, and junior Kaitlin Thompson, as well as freshman Lexie Campbell, will be among this year’s newcomers to watch. “We have so many young,
athletic players moving through the program at both the JV and varsity level, and it is very exciting to watch them,” Tyson said, “but we definitely do not have a large amount of game experience going into the season.” With the mix of seasoned seniors and talented but young and inexperienced players, Tyson pointed to the team’s goal of getting better each game so that, come the end of the regular season, the Indians are playing their best, and they’re able to win some games once tournament time rolls around. Tyson expects this team to show up and work hard in practice and games every single day. “I think we really just need the season to get started to work out the kinks,” Tyson said. “With only five players having starter experience it will take us a little time to figure out how all of the pieces fit together. But that is the strategy of this game – and part of what makes coaching fun for [Coach Caryn] Rehme and I.” The new-look Indians will go hand-in-hand with a new landscape in 2019. All of Powhatan’s VHSL teams are now grouped in the Dominion District, which heavily features neighboring schools in the Midlothian/ Chesterfield County and south Richmond communities as opposed to the relatively distant Charlottesville-area schools in the Jefferson District. “Moving to the Dominion District is a great step for our
school and all of our athletic programs. It obviously cuts down on the travel time-which is huge,” Tyson said. “The bus rides really wear you down as the season progresses and takes a toll on our student athletes. It is really difficult to get home at 10 or 11 p.m. and then wake up and do it all over again the next day.” And then there are the Region 4B adversaries of Midlothian and Monacan, each of whom Powhatan will now get to face twice in the regular season before potentially seeing them again in the postseason. “I also think it is positive that we will be playing against local teams and our hope is to continue to build those rivalries,” Tyson said. “We have made a point to play the best teams because that is how you get better, and that included many of the programs from this district, so it is familiar to us.” For Powhatan Field Hockey, a successful season means so many things. “It really is about the kids,” Tyson said. “I am excited about the eight seniors and looking forward to it being a great year for all of them. They have been a part of this program on JV and/or varsity for the past three or four years and put so much into helping to continue to build this program. “I want them to continue to grow and learn the game of field hockey,” Tyson said, “and for it to be a positive experience for them.”

wise with such a great team, with such a great program that, hopefully with myself and our new pitching coach Anthony Burke as well as Coach (ML) Morgan and Coach (Ray) Hedrick, we can take them to new heights this year, Llewellyn said. Being solid defensively as a catcher “is a really, really good way to help win ball games, Llewellyn pointed out, and with Llewellyn, RMC’s catchers this coming spring will get to work with a coach who not only will be less than a year re-
moved from having played at their position at the collegiate level, but who, in his playing career with Wingate, threw out 44 runners trying to steal bases from behind the dish and delivered an overall fielding percentage of 98.7. Llewellyn looks forward to helping the catchers figure out how to work with the next pitchers in line in order to help them work through adversity, perform at the best of their abilities and help the team win games. In working with assistant coach Morgan on the hitting side, Llewellyn said he really likes Morgan’s approach of break-

ing hitters down into different types; he also spoke to the importance of seeing what the individual guy needs. “You can’t take all 25 hitters and say, ‘You need to all swing this exact same way,’ Llewellyn said, adding of Randolph-Macon: “They all know their strengths and their weaknesses, and that comes from having such a good approach in the fall and their practice sessions through Coach Morgan. “I’m excited to learn from him and then be able to help the guys with the subtle nuances of: me being able to help him through a game in regards to approach with a certain pitcher, Llewellyn said. In shaping himself into the kind of coach he wants to be, Llewellyn spoke to combining the great things he’s been shown and taught by the great coaches he’s had – including the ones he feels fortunate to have had in college and high school – with knowing what not to do, based on observations from his younger years of some of the coaching that wasn’t effective. Llewellyn has never seen himself to be a brash or aggressive person, and he doesn’t believe that, as a coach, it’s your job to put somebody down. “You should never make somebody feel like less of a person for anything, he said. “I don’t want any of my players to ever feel like I think less of them as a person or I put them down for some reason because they couldn’t perform on a baseball field.

He looks forward to being positive and keeping players upbeat, and to being able to address when the guys need to work on something in a manner that is constructive and not belittling. In between concluding his career as a player for Wingate and stepping into his role on R-MC’s coaching staff, Llewellyn this summer held a position in the baseball world that further acquainted him with the aspects of the game that go beyond the field. He recently served as Director of Baseball Operations for the Canes travel baseball organization, overseeing the day-to-day operations for the Canes American 17u team, as well as the National 17u team that won multiple national titles this year. He was in the office every day, or just about, during the week, and then he traveled with the team wherever it went. His duties included working with equipment, payroll, shoes/cleats, bats, booking flights and hotels, coordinating the bus driver
getting to and from places, loading up all the equipment on the bus, driving U-Haul vans, taking kids back and forth to and from each game, making the rosters and ensuring said rosters were accurate for each week. In taking on that mammoth list of responsibilities, Llewellyn made sure that nothing got lost or forgotten, that everyone was where they needed to be on time and that all the players stayed safe. He enjoyed “getting to coach with the best coaches in the country, including Powhatan coaches Gregg Conner and Tim Lowery and the Canes’ head coach Jeff Petty, and “getting to coach the best players in the country, including a pitching staff that he called “unreal. He learned a lot about the logistical side of things in baseball. Having that kind of experience also opens more doors for him, as he could potentially get into more of the administrative/operations side of baseball should he not pursue coaching, which is currently what he wants

Ellison said. All of the new girls are “super niceâ€? – added junior setter McKenzie Goacher – “and they really do love volleyball.â€? “They strive to get better every day,â€? Goacher said, “and it pushes me to get better‌it’s a great atmosphere‌â€? The team’s five sophomores will help comprise the defensive base, with Allie Dulio and Kendall McMullin anchoring the defense as the Liberos. “I really like – getting a good dig‌It feels good when you can pass a good pass like that,â€? Dulio said. The team’s setting core will also be young, as Goacher and sophomore Bryson Amorese look to factor into a 6-2 rotation as the setters. “Being a setter is tough because the hitters rely on you to get a good set to get a kill,â€? Goacher said, “but they’re all really sweet; if you have an off set, they’re like, ‘Oh, you got it next time‌’ They’re overall really just encouraging to make me better and it’s great.â€? Dulio also praised her teammates as being really supportive. “We all cheer each other on,â€? Dulio said. “Even if we mess up, we’re all there for each other.â€? The Indians will feature two senior power hitters in six-foot Ellison and Star Bryant, as well as several strong junior hitters including Natalie Mueller. Ellison said they’ve been working a lot on communicating during practice; she also spoke to wanting to focus on consistency, which she expects to be strong a couple games into the season. In addition to featuring several new players under a new head coach, Powhatan will also take on a new-look schedule with the shift to the Chesterfield-heavy Dominion District, which features standout programs like Cosby and Powhatan’s Region 4B foe Midlothian. But with Powhatan’s proximity to
to pursue. That might change, he said, but he’s got a year of coaching to figure that out – and a year of grad school to see what he likes the most. With Division II Wingate Baseball, Llewellyn got to start all four seasons, was a team captain for two years and earned preseason and postseason accolades across his career there. Overall, he batted .273 - including .324 his sophomore season and tallied up 93 RBIs and 51 extra base-hits. He homered 26 times, launching 12 of those home runs as a senior. In three out of four seasons, he and his Wingate teammates won at least 30 season games. “Being a part of their program was one of the best things I’ve done in life,â€? Llewellyn said of Wingate Baseball. “I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. I’ve made a lot of really good friends that I’ll be close with for the rest of my life, and I can’t trade those experiences and those memories for anything‌â€?
its new district opponents, there’s an added layer of anticipation. “These are girls that these girls rub shoulders with year-round – in shopping malls and club season and all that because we live so close now, versus having to drive an hour-and-a-half to opponents [in the Jefferson District] that you’re never going to see except during fall ball,â€? Coach Bryant said. “It’s fun – we’re excited about the rivalries that we’ll help to create, and just the ability to rub up against the Richmond elite teams and showcase our skills against them.â€? Ellison and Goacher are looking forward to playing Cosby – one of Goacher’s club ball teammates just so happens to play for the Titans – and Dulio and McMullin are looking forward to facing Midlothian, because when it comes to facing the Trojans, “it’s always a good game,â€? McMullin said. While Powhatan Volleyball is looking once again to go as far as it can, the team is concentrated on the culture component – on striving to develop an understanding of what makes great teammates, because, in the long term, that understanding helps develop winning teams, Coach Bryant pointed out. “I think the wins are going to come as we do that,â€? she said. The coaches have been excited to see how quickly the players have jumped on board with where the coaching staff wants to head the program, and how excited the players are themselves about where the team’s trying to go. “I’m really excited to be with Coach Bryant,â€? Goacher said smiling. “It’s really exciting to learn her ways of being as a team and culture. I’m really excited to‌run new sets and just excited to play with new girls and learn from them.â€? “We expect great things this season,â€? Coach Bryant said, “but we’re expecting even greater things in the next few seasons to come.â€?

Be Like Mike Color Run honors, supports Cooper Stuart Staff Report
P
OWHATAN - The third Annual Michael T. Walter Below the Line Color Run took place Aug. 10 and was a great success. This year, the race in memory of a fallen Virginia State Police special agent from Powhatan was held in honor of 12-year-old Cooper Stuart. The race had a strong turnout with just over 190 runners. All proceeds went to the Stuart family to help with expenses after the little boy underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor. Cooper got to ride to the race in style as a fire truck picked him up at his house. He also accompanied Sheriff Brad Nunnally through the race from the start. The three color stations hosted by volunteers sprayed runners with color. Organizers celebrated the third annual Be Like Mike recipient, Quinn Pasi and his K-9 partner Bane. The award was presented by Isaac Hertzler (of 5.11), Jaime Walter, and Cooper Stuart. Also joining participants at the run was Braxton Lee, who runs for fallen police officers, the wives and families of fallen officers and members of the community.
