Contributed Report Of what value is Clean Water? What value do you place on a clear, clean cold, glass of water? More than 1.7 million Virginians, which includes many residents of Goochland and Powhatan, depend on wells, springs or cisterns for their household water supply. Private water sources, such as wells and springs, are not regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is the homeowner’s responsibility to monitor the quality of their water supply. Residents on municipal water supplies don’t usually have to worry about testing because their local water management agency conducts regular testing. Thanks to the Virginia Household Water Quality Program (VAHWQP) at Virginia Tech, there is an excellent upcoming opportunity for residents of Goochland and Powhatan to have their water supply tested for the reasonable
price of $60. Through this affordable, confidential testing, you will learn about the quality of your household water supply and become empowered to make decisions about system maintenance and water treatment. Many homeowners with wells, springs or cisterns rarely test their water supply and that is usually when it is required for an occupancy permit or when they notice some issue with their water such as an odor, discoloration or gastrointestinal symptoms. But other potential problems can go unnoticed without testing. If you would like to gain peace of mind concerning the quality of your water, here is your chance. Contact your local extension office in Goochland (804-5565841, email: whitehd5@ vt.edu) or Powhatan (804-598-5640, email: allisw2@vt.edu ) for information and to register for the program or you can register at the link: https://tinyurl.com/GPwatertest2019.
Participants will pick up a sample kit and get instructions on how to properly collect their household water sample during a brief kickoff meeting. After collecting samples, homeowners will drop them off at the Goochland or Powhatan Extension offices on Sept. 25 between 7 and 9 a.m. The sampling process will also include a short questionnaire. Samples will be delivered and analyzed in the water laboratory at Virginia Tech. A combined follow-up meeting will be held in October. At this meeting, participants will receive their confidential test results, an explanation of the numbers, and information on how to handle any problems found. For more information on the Virginia Household Water Quality Program, visit http://www. wellwater.bse.vt.edu/index.php. The goal of this program is to improve water quality and health of Virginians with private water supplies.
ees, she said. “That is not just teachers. That is everybody employed and working with the school systems, both public and private. The parade on Monday, Sept. 2 will start at 11 a.m. sharp with line-up and staging starting at 9:30 a.m. at Fighting Creek Park (intersection of Mann and Old Buckingham roads). The parade ends at The Courthouse Green. More than 40 parade entries have signed up to march through the Village center to represent the wide variety of what Powhatan has to offer – fire and rescue personnel, civic
groups, antique car clubs, dance squads, political candidates, youth-oriented groups, and motorcycle clubs, Ware said. The Powhatan High School Band will also perform during the parade. Also new to the festival will be an appearance by the 2019 Ms. Virginia Senior America and the Virginia State Fair 2018 Demolition Derby winner, Team Bad Habit, Ware said. All of the entries are meant to create a fun, festive atmosphere that celebrates the rural feel of Powhatan County and its residents. “It is kind of a back-to-
school, end-of-summer celebration showing county pride. It is a good time for people who haven’t seen each other all summer to reconnect, she said. Almost 40 vendors are scheduled to be set up on the Courthouse Green from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This includes food and craft vendors, nonprofits, and political candidates. The Lions Club will have a booth where people can drop off eyeglasses and hearing aids that can be refurbished and donated. Tradition
People tend toward traditions. Sometimes they are harmless, sometimes not. The tradition of denominations (hundreds of different doctrined and named churches) versus the one Jesus built (Matt 16:18); the tradition of salvation by mental-faith alone versus salvation after belief and baptism (Mark 16:16); the tradition of occasional communion versus the Lord’s Supper every Sunday (Acts 20:7) deserve re-examination. May we examine tradition in the light of Scripture.

to connect the local businesses to those CTE courses and allow them to understand what the companies are currently looking for when hiring, said Roxanne Salerno, economic development program manager. “I think it went really well. proves that high quality preschools make a major difference in school achievement no matter what a child’s economic status is. So what makes for Virginia Quality? What is the best for my child? The Workshop Way Preschool at Little Zion just graduated its first two children in June! This little school with a limited enrollment of 20 children has already been officially recognized as a Virginia Quality Level 3 Preschool! It is the only “VA Quality 3 certified program in Powhatan, Cumberland or Goochland counties. It is the only Workshop Way school in Virginia. Workshop Way is a system of human growth for education for learners of all ages. Workshop Way was created by Sister Grace H. Pilon, a Sister of the Blessed Sacrament. It is similar in philosophy to Maria Montessori’s educational programs. (See WorkshopWay.org) Sister Beulah Martin, Sister Maureen Carroll and
Maxcine Ross had begun a Workshop Way preschool at Belmead, and the Workshop Way Inc. nonprofit had formerly been located there. Little Zion’s pastor, Dr. Gregory Beechaum Sr., the church trustees, and a founding committee graciously opened their location on Cartersville Road to this new community venture. It is an ideal learning place and program for small children! The highest quality early educational environment is the foundational goal of the new Workshop Way Preschool at Little Zion. It is a private, nonprofit LLC that relies on both private and public funding sources. Tuition, donations, grants and efficient, effective management of community support has shown us that high quality early childhood education is sustainable. At the present time, only limited enrollment is available in the Virginia public school systems. Private preschools and

Over several hours, the educators had the chance to tour five businesses: Rapid Manufacturing, WeightPack Inc., Chadwick and Son Orchids, Envestnet (formerly Pie Tech), and The Mill at Fine Creek and Fine Creek Brewing. Representatives at each business gave the teachers a tour of the facility, an overview of their operations, and what they are looking for in an employee.
“It is good for those teachers to know those things and what skills are more needed than others and also what types of jobs are available directly out of high school with the CTE certificates, Salerno said. “It is creating a good pipeline for those students to be connected with the local businesses. For economic development purposes, she is also hoping to foster relationships for a local source of workforce, she added. “If our businesses are

not having to look outside the county and are hiring locally, that is a goal. And if they can directly source from the high school the positions they need, that is an even better goal, she said. Teresa Whitlock, CFO of Weightpack Inc., said she definitely found it worth her time to connect with local educators and share the base skill sets that are utilized at Weightpack. She hopes it will help align the training students get through the trade programs with the skills that are needed in the workplace. One of the points Whitlock said she emphasized strongly was how important math, writing, and communications skills are in a potential employee. Sometimes students studying a trade feel they don’t have to put as much emphasis on their traditional subjects, but that mindset would be a hindrance for them, she said. “Most of our staff here deals with customers, either as a technician faceto-face or making parts for them. And with being an international company, we utilize metric and standard, so being able to convert between them is huge for us, she said. She added that whether a young person is seeking a job in Powhatan or somewhere else, if they understand math and English skills are critical and can discuss that in a job interview, that “already
puts them above other people because they recognize that fact. The potential benefit to her company or other local businesses in making a connection like this is access to a larger pool of employees, Whitlock said. With unemployment rates low and Powhatan’s situation as a rural county, some people don’t want to make the drive here for an entry-level job. “That potential pool obviously wouldn’t just be for us. It would be for other small businesses in the community. A lot of small businesses, when they go to hire someone, a lot of it is word of mouth or in the Powhatan Today. You don’t necessarily have a large pool or invest a lot of money to hire an entrylevel position, she said. Those from the school district who participated were Dr. Jason Tibbs, director of facilities and career and technical education; Nicole Arnold, PHS assistant principal; Mark Robertson, culinary arts instructor; Robert Benway, engineering instructor; Jane Brown, family and consumer sciences instructor, and Carroll Gillispie, welding and small engine instructor. Brown will be teaching the CTE program’s newest offering, a hospitality and tourism course. She loved the tour, saying it was exciting to see the business opportunities and growth that have happened in
Powhatan that could benefit PHS graduates. All of the educators who attended the tour walked away with good information and even better connections, Brown said. The stop that was the most relevant to her future students was the Mill at Fine Creek because of the various hospitality and tourism related businesses located there. She already hopes to work with the local business to set up a field trip there with her students. “It was really eyeopening for all of us. Being educators, we know what we are teaching the kids and we are trying to align our competencies in our very different areas with what the needs of localities are, Brown said. She appreciated that the local business were not only willing to discuss possibilities such as internships or apprenticeships in terms of placement but also offering to come and do demonstrations and talks to some of the relevant classes for their fields. “Roxanne had said that the businesses she talks to on a daily basis ask, ‘What does the school system have? How can we partner with them? How can we get kids interested in what we are doing so we can bring them on and have them as potential employees?’ So, it is a win-win for our community for the education system and business and industry to partner together, Brown said.

Walking ghost tour offers glimpse into city’s dark past By Laura McFarland News Editor
The only ghost we saw was our tour guide, but it was still a frightfully good time. Most people who have friends and family visit from out of town know the struggle that is finding something to do. If you are inviting them for a particular event – say Powhatan’s upcoming Labor Day Parade or Festival of the Grape – or a special birthday or anniversary party, your problem is solved. But if you have people coming in for anywhere from a single night to a full week, you might just have the desire to find something interesting for them to do. Earlier this month, I had a friend come for a visit from North Carolina to stay for a single night. Her boyfriend and his friend were attending a concert in downtown Richmond, so the plan was to have dinner together, drop them off at the concert, and then go off with my friend Brie to do something on our own nearby. Brie is a little unconventional, so we chose a suitably unconventional outing – taking a ghost tour of downtown Richmond. It seems like something you save for Halloween, but, aside from the slightly-toowarm weather, it really didn’t feel out of place to be doing it in the summer. I have done other tours around Richmond – usually during the day and occasionally involving history. This one was a little special. Our tour guide was a ghost named Grace Morris, who died tragically in the James River while out on a picnic with her husband and some friends. After the tour was over, Brie and I had a drink of water or four (it was a warm night, remember?) at a pub with our tour guide, who told us that she had been tasked with creating her character – who was really a delightful Southern belle – but everyone else she talked about in the two-hour walk was real. I want to laud her dedication to the character, especially when telling us we could take still images with our “devil boxes” but no moving pictures as it might steal her soul, and she only had but so much left. It was a fascinating walk and talk that saw me puffing up some of Richmond’s hillier parts (I am working on getting in better shape) and long staircases. At times, the stories got a little grisly and morose. Grace’s descriptions of soldiers in the Civil War having their limbs amputated

Karla Curtis of Powhatan surprised the staff at all five public schools on Monday, Aug. 26 when she announced that she and her husband, Bob Curtis, founder and co-CEO of PIEtech, would be reinvesting a piece of the roughly $500 million they made from the sale of their company earlier this year into the local school system. “We sold PIEtech and we have a bunch of money,” she said with a laugh in between visiting the schools. “I have a very nice life, so it gave us an opportunity to support the community that we live in. There are few things that are as important to this county as the public school system. It is critical for economic development. It is critical for building future citizens of this county.”
came a little too close on the heels of my barbecue dinner. It was both difficult and all too easy to stand in the middle of the 17th Street Farmers Market and imagine the slave auctions that were held in that very place. It was easy to imagine in a general sense because I have seen enough movies and documentaries set in times when slavery still existed in this country that showed slave auctions, although how accurate they were to the horrible truth I don’t know. I say it was hard because it is difficult to superimpose those same images of human suffering over the lively downtown restaurant scene, where I saw few markers to shed light on that part of the city’s history. (Since the tour, I learned about Richmond’s Slave Trail Commission and am interested to take a closer look at the Slave Trail). I also was unaware of the failed slave revolt planned by literate slave Gabriel Prosser in 1800, which was foiled by torrential rain and a traitor within his group who warned white authorities of the impending attack. Part of the tour led us to the steps of the Capitol Building, which is lit up at night and the grounds open to visitors. After climbing up the steps, we rested at the top, and the view of the city at night was spectacular. We visited Monumental Church, which is the site of the Richmond Theatre fire of 1811 that claimed 72 lives. Grace talked about the spooky photos people have taken where mysterious faces could be seen in the windows, but, to be honest, imagining the terror of the theatergoers in that burning building didn’t need anything for added effect. I liked how she talked about not only the death but the heroism of two men in particular, Dr. James McCaw, and an enslaved blacksmith, Gilbert Hunt, who saved many lives that cold winter night. Despite the way the above might sound as I talk about a night hearing about so much death, this was not an overly macabre outing. It was a glimpse into the city’s darker history, true, but it also was a way of remembering people who are long gone. Brie and I loved how personal everything felt, especially as Grace related the events of her fictional life to those of real people and places in the city. In a strange way, a talk that was all about death brought history to life for us. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday.com.
The couple is partnering with the Powhatan Education Foundation (PEF) to administer the Curtis Donor Advised Fund, which will include three distinct funds that will benefit Powhatan’s students, programs, and teachers. Karla Curtis visited each of the schools to talk about the couple’s plans, accompanied by Carolyn White, PEF president, Dr. Eric Jones, superintendent, and several PCPS administrators. Each presentation built up to the biggest surprise – to show appreciation to the impact teachers have on students’ lives, Curtis and her husband will be giving $1,000 to every PCPS teacher and school counselor this school year. The only restriction on this Teacher Impact Fund is that teachers use the money in support of their classrooms or students as they see fit

With improvements, upgrades, PCPS ready for new school year By Dr. Eric Jones Special to Powhatan Today
I
n just one week we will be welcoming over 4,300 students back to schools throughout Powhatan County. All students will be returning to a school that will be fully accredited under the state’s new accreditation model. All five PCPS schools saw overall gains in math achievement, and Powhatan Middle School and Powhatan High School saw increases in English performance. I am also proud that our students with disabiliDr. Eric Jones ties, black students, and students from economically disadvantaged homes showed increased achievement and growth. The community will notice some positive changes for this school year. First, we are thrilled that the sheriff’s office has allocated two more full-time school resource officers (SROs) to PCPS. We will now have full-time SROs at Flat Rock and Pocahontas Elementary. Thanks to Sheriff Brad Nunnally and his staff for prioritizing student and staff safety among their many important responsibilities. Also in the area of school safety, we will be implementing a new curriculum for Social and Emotional Learning that will promote student wellness and positive behaviors. In addition, we have hired a full-time behavior specialist to work with our students and teachers. The goal of this position is to reduce negative behaviors that disrupt classroom instruction for all students. On the facility side, we are finishing up work on an energy performance contract that has allowed us to upgrade lighting and energy efficiency at all schools and install new HVAC equipment at Powhatan and Pocahontas Elementary Schools. As a result of this partnership with Trane, PCPS was able to eliminate close to $6 million in capital improvement projects (CIP) without obligating the county to any more debt. The community will also see solar panels being installed on all of our buildings with the exception of PHS, which will reduce energy costs resulting in long term savings for our community. Finally, the Powhatan County School Board is looking for feedback from the community on a potential earlier start date to the 2020-2021 school year. The General Assembly passed a law that gives all localities the opportunity to start up to two weeks prior to Labor Day. There are a number of instructional and non-instructional benefits for our students to starting before Labor Day. The timing of the sale of PIEtech to Envestnet, a provider of intelligent systems for wealth management and financial wellness, means the money for this part of the donation won’t be available until later in the fall. Curtis told teachers to keep their receipts from the start of the year and reimburse themselves when the funds become available – hopefully no later than Dec. 1. “Classroom teachers have a very hard job, and I am not sure the general public always recognizes that. So part of this is us saying to classroom teachers, we want to support you because your jobs are critically important,” Curtis said. Jones said that with about 320 teachers and 12 school

counselors this school year, this part of the donation would add up to almost $335,000. Curtis also announced two other initiatives she and her husband will fund. They are setting up a $25,000 scholarship fund for Powhatan High School that will award scholarships to graduating students who have a need and have “exhibited an aptitude in a field of study and have a strong desire to complete a curriculum in that field.” The scholarships will be a minimum of $2,000 per year and are renewable for a maximum of five years, as long as the student is continuously enrolled. One big difference for this scholarship fund is that it will not be based on GPA or test scores, Curtis said. She talked about how different she and her husband were academically – she excelled in the traditional classroom setting while her hus-
band “was at best a C student in college” despite being brilliant. “He argued strongly that there are a lot of students with some hidden potential with a strong desire to do something,” she said, but added that students would not be penalized for having good grades. She is going to work with the scholarship committee to work out more detailed criteria for the applications. Curtis also talked about a $45,000 grant that will be split between the school district’s music; career and technical education (CTE); and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. Money can be used for any activities or supplies for each of the programs at the discretion of their program coordinators. The Curtis’ total donation is “by far by order of magnitude see GRANT, pg. 8

the biggest gift that has ever been given to the Powhatan Education Foundation, and the board is beyond excited to be a part of this initiative,” Carolyn White said. She added that the board was especially grateful that Karla Curtis didn’t want to eclipse the PEF’s established giving program, the classroom innovation grants. Before Curtis made her announcement, White told all of the teachers that the foundation was doubling the maximum amount of the classroom innovation grants this year to a maximum of $3,000. White pointed out that the Curtis’ funds have very few restrictions, while the PEF classroom innovation grants will continue to be a curriculum-based grant applicant
grant process. At each of the school visits, Jones laughed as he joked about how hard it was to keep this generous donation a secret since June so that everyone in the school district could be equally surprised. “I didn’t sleep last night because I was so excited about this,” Jones said Monday. “I have been excited for weeks. So it is great the day is finally here and we can make the announcement. It is great seeing the teachers’ reactions to the announcements. We have seen everything from elation to tears of joy to shock. I know it is going to take the time for the teachers to process this, but I know it means the world to them.” Jones said when Bob and Carla Curtis approached him in June, they already had a basic idea of how they wanted to divide the three funds –
“we just helped them figure out how to bring them to fruition.” He was also thrilled the couple is considering continuing their support of the school district in future years either in the same way or in new ways if they determine that is what the division needs. “It is incredible. We work very hard and our county is blessed to have the resources that they have, but when we are talking $25,000 in student grants, that is a huge number,” Jones said. “And the money that we have for CTE, STEM and our music program is money that we are going to be able to build upon and will benefit all of our students. It’s incredible in terms of the size of it but also the impact it is going to have on students.” Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@powhatantoday. com.

The nonprofit has conducted several fundraisers featuring a huge fireworks show. Starting this year, organizers have changed to a country music fest while still having the fireworks, explained Clyde Childress, founder of The Patriots Day Classic, and cofounder of BoomBang Music Festival. "On Aug. 31 we will host the largest country music festival in the state with some 20 top talents from Nashville along with the largest fireworks anywhere around. This is the first annual music fest. Next year will be three days of top artists. Proceeds will go to several veterans groups. Hope to see you there for one great time!" Childress said. Defensive plays a highlight in scrimmage Powhatan delivers strong plays, also looks to learn from mistakes vs. Collegiate By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

ICHMOND – The Powhatan Indians scrimmaged the hosting Collegiate Cougars through a mix of weather patterns on Friday. At times, the sweltering heat was inescapable. And then at times, the hot sun hid behind an incoming cluster of storm clouds, and a much-welcomed breeze passed through. For the Indians, takeaways from how they did were similar. At times, they showcased flashes of things that were very encouraging to Powhatan head coach Mike Henderson and his coaching staff – a touchdown catch here, an interception there. And then at times, they made mistakes. “Almost all the mistakes we made were fixable,” Henderson pointed out, “so we’re happy with that – and at the same point, we made way too many of them.” Henderson wants to see his players improve upon their consistency, on their assignments and on ball security going into this coming Thursday’s home scrimmage versus Atlee. Going into Friday’s preseason matchup, Henderson wanted to see his team be physical. “And for the most part, I thought we played pretty physical, so I was pretty happy with that,” Henderson said. “Obviously first week, a lot of mistakes that we’ve got to fix, but I think 90 percent of the teams are kind of in that boat right now. It’s our first live action against somebody different, seeing somebody going full-speed. It’s hard to simulate that in practice no matter how good you are on offense and defense. The game sped up a little bit, and sometimes we responded to it; sometimes we didn’t.” There were good plays to be had on offense. Jaysun Carroll caught a short

BSH honors McQueen, wins benefit By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

OWHATAN - The evening before he began a new chapter in his life by heading to Ferrum to kick-off his freshman year of college, Sean McQueen got to step foot on Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s football field once again - this time as a graduate. He joined the Knights’ team captains for the coin toss that opened the BSH Football benefit game held Friday, Aug. 16 in his honor. “It means a lot that everyone remembers me and what I’ve been through,” said Sean, who all his life has endured having Fanconi Anemia - a rare, lifelong disease that prevents bone marrow from making enough new blood cells for the body to work properly - and throughout
his time at BSH had seen - and still continues to see - strong support from the school and the Knights’ community. BSH Football made the game even sweeter for Sean and the home fans by dominating the second half to run past visiting Rappahannock County 31-14. “It means the world, because...I knew him since he was a freshman...” BSH Football senior fullback Chase Musselman said of Sean. “He’s always been a strong part of this football team, so it’s good that we can put on a strong performance for him.” “He’s always wanted to do everything to help,” said junior quarterback Trevor Parker, praising how Sean has managed the team like “he’s the father of the team really - it’s awesome.” “It’s heartwarming to see,” Musselman said.
At halftime, Sean, who held the role of BSH Football team manager since his freshman season, observed that the Knights were running the ball really well - quarterback Trevor Parker wrapped up the night with 116 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries - and that the defense looked good.
An amazing debut James Hawkins played his first 48 game time minutes of varsity football on Friday night. It was hard to tell... ...with “hard to tell” being a vast understatement. and had multiple touchbacks on kickoffs. Parker at the quarterback continued his dominant rushing ways from last season, mixing in some zigzagging runs and wearing down the opponents for 116 yards and three touchdowns – including a sweeping 35-yard romp with the help of a big block from Chase Musselman – on 20 carries.

Powhatan Volleyball strong in scrimmage Indians beat Trinity 3-1; Ellison, Bryant combine for 33 kills By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor POWHATAN – Following a tough loss in preseason play the previous week to Grafton, the Powhatan Indians this past Wednesday gained confidence from their 3-1 scrimmage victory over Trinity Episcopal before opening the 2019 regular season this past Monday. “We are young and we need that time on the court together to just gel and work out all the kinks,” head coach Cindy Bryant said after Wednesday’s scrimmage. “I think we’re off to a great start and I appreciate the positive team energy…how much we’re seeing everyone stay positive…” Six-foot senior Sierra Ellison was a force at outside hitter, delivering 22 kills and 4 service aces. Coach Bryant praised how Ellison is “consistent in what she does and how she approaches the ball;” her speedy reaction was on point as, late in the opening set, she was able to race to an airball that wasn’t hit to her and spike it into open space for the kill. Senior Star Bryant followed Ellison in kills with 11 and service aces with 3, and late in the match was able to mix in some lighter “dink” kills up the middle. “We just feel like she belongs in that middle,” Coach Bryant said of Star. “When outsides maybe get shut down…we have that power middle there that can put the ball down for us at a different location on the court.” Mckenzie Goacher led the team in assists with 18.
Going into the regular season, the Indians have at least three strong arms in different positions to call upon in Ellison, Star and junior Natalie Mueller, and then the Indians also have some 10th graders whom they expect to jump right in within a couple weeks. Additionally, senior Zoe Higley made a big play late in the fourth set when she turned a rally that was kept alive by diving digs from Goacher and Kara Huber into a well-placed point in the middle of the floor. “We are seeing Zoe bring incredible positive energy to our court,” Coach Bryant said, adding that while she doesn’t hard-kill the ball, “she puts the ball strategically to open court, and the kill is recorded the same.” Coach Bryant was impressed by the team’s blocking performance; 5-8 sophomore Emilie McDaniels found her rhythm as the match progressed and, in a couple of plays, was able to string together consecutive blocks within the same play. “She has uncanny blocking timing in a positive way,” Coach Bryant said of McDaniels. While Coach Bryant noted that the team’s defending and ability to intercept the ball was better than last week, she observed that they still have some positioning to correct – the players are still in the get-toknow-you phase as far as trusting the players who are supposed to intercept the short ball so that the deep players stay deep, and vice versa – “but that’s going to come with reps,” Coach Bryant said. Powhatan Volleyball played L.C. Bird in its regular season opener Monday and plays at Midllothian on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. before taking on the Virginia Volleyball showcase Aug. 30-31 at RVC.

The 2019 Powhatan Cross Country team warms-up together as a team at the start of a 2019 preseason practice.
Powhatan Cross Country team preps for 2019 season Staff Report “Train like it’s race day. “Respect rest. “Create and draw energy off the team-family dynamic. “Have fun. “Leave nothing on the course. “With risk, comes rewards. And “shut the door on negativity.” With those philosophies, co-coaches Bucky Webb and Paul Smartschan are leading a young group of Powhatan runners overall into the upcoming 2019 cross country season. Following what the coaches described as likely the largest graduating class in the history of the program this past June, this year’s team features a lot of new runners, including Chloe Grell, Lucy Redlich, Rebecca Ray, Alyssa Gorman, Audrey Lennon, Virginia Bird, Raquel Iga, Lauren Lampkin, Cassie Murray, Brayden Hamilton, Anthony Cavedo, Jack Connelly, Brodie Glanden, Erik Glanden, Liam Clancy, Cole Whiting, Josh Holland, Gavin Rice and Grant Woodard. But according to both coaches, the returners - among them third-place region meet finisher and 29th-place state finisher Gavin Timmons, top 40 region meet finishers Ashley Trevillian and Lexie Elzey and teammates Davis Tester, Jackson Tester, Sophie Dolan and Carly Dolan - have learned the importance of the coaches’ philosophies from the past seniors, and they’re doing a great job teaching them to this year’s newcomers, the coaches said. Webb and Smartschan noted that, as

a whole, the runners’ dedication to their pre-season “base” training has been very impressive. Most came into tryouts in great shape already - the coaches said - which has benefited them with regards to their being able to handle the volume and intensity of the workouts so far. The Indians are very excited about the switch to the Dominion District. The Jefferson District cross country competition was strong, the coaches
said, but they look forward to taking on local teams on nearby courses like the upper course at Pocahontas State Park. In addition to the runners striving to consistently improve upon their personal bests on the courses, their goals this season are to have fun and push themselves beyond their mental and physical limits while competing hard as a unified team. Sportsmanship is also always a goal in their program, the coaches said; sup-
porting and encouraging teammates and opponents is something they try to do at every meet. The Indians also look forward to improving on their regional finishes from last year, with the boys having finished 6th and the girls finishing 9th. Powhatan Cross Country will take on four races in the William & Mary Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14, beginning with the girls varsity (A) race on the Eastern State Course at 9:45 a.m.

soccer standout set up for the field goal attempt at the 30 yard line and, with his foot, sent the ball sailing through the air. It arched up, flew directly through the middle of the uprights, and cleared the low bar to send his Knights into a 10-8 lead on a 40-yarder. “What a performance!” Parker exclaimed. “Straight down the middle every time! That man is crazy!” “We haven’t had a kid come in here and do that in a long, long time,” said head coach Gary Brock. “I think our guys on the sideline were sitting there with their mouths wide open: I can’t believe he hit that. But the thing is he’s been hitting those in practice - he’s been hitting all the way up to like 47. Tremendous game by him, it really was. Very fortunate.” Hawkins made all four of his point-after-touchdown attempts, pinned the Panthers deep in their own territory on punts and delivered multiple kickoffs for touchbacks. “He’s a legit weapon - he really is,” Brock said. “I can’t say enough about him; he turned the ballgame around for us...”
Defense ramps up When the benefit game ended under the Friday Night Lights, defensive coordinator Patrick Winterrowd praised the team’s huge second half before saying that the defense played “lights out” in the stretch. The unit stayed in the fight from start to finish, and huge

pass in the end zone for a touchdown, and track star Anthony Greenhow was able to turn another short pass over the middle into a 55-yard gain on a huge run down the left sideline. Henderson observed that sophomore Hans Rehme played well in the quarterback position, and junior Aaron Nash was also able to showcase his athleticism while playing under center. Nash followed-up Greenhow’s incendiary catch-and-run play with a sweeping rush around the right side for a five-yard TD. Before that, he unleashed a successful 22-yard, outof-pocket pass down the right side while staying on the move.
second-half plays like David Mann’s tackle to force a turnover on downs, Ben Newton’s sack to force third and long and fumbles forced and recovered by Josh Decker paved the way for the Knights to unleash a storm of 24 unanswered points, catapulting them out of a narrow 8-7 deficit - which they faced after giving up a 33-yard touchdown pass and the follow-up two-point conversion and into a commanding 31-8 lead before the final 32 seconds of the contest. “Coming out in the second half on fire just really pushes our team towards the rest of the season,” Parker said. “We had to go to something completely different and we had to spread it out and do some things that we don’t normally do - we’re young and hopefully we learn from this,” said Brock, who called Friday night’s benefit game “a great sendoff” for Sean. “I’m proud of them,” he said of his players. Musselman credited the elevated second-half efforts to captain leadership and quarterback leadership, and Parker also pointed to talks in the locker room from the coaches. “We have to bring these younger kids kind of to their senses, because they have never experienced a varsity football game before, so we kind of let ‘em know that: Hey, after the first hit, you’ll realize it’s just like practice,” Musselman said. “And you can’t let ‘em get their heads down too soon,” Parker said. “If they get their heads down, they won’t come back up.” Defense did flex its resiliency early in the game before locking down Rappahannock
“He showed a lot of flashes – that’s what we like about him out there,” Henderson said of Nash. “He’s got a lot of talent; he’s fun to work with.” But Henderson saw that the players also need to clean up some things – they left some points on the field a couple times – and he spoke to the team needing to keep the best plays where they’re at while also eliminating and/or fixing some of the negative plays he saw in the scrimmage. On the defensive side, both the front line and the secondary should be strengths for the Indians, Henderson pointed out, and Powhatan’s first defense made big plays across the field on Friday. On that side, the Indians this season expect to be led by 6-1 senior inside

County though most of the second half. The visiting Panthers ate eight minutes and 18 seconds off the first-quarter clock in their game-opening drive alone as, down-by-down, they steadily marched all the way into the Knights’ red zone using the ground game. They went no further than the 11, as Ben Newton delivered a big stop to force fourth down, and then Parker swooped in to bring down the ball carrier on the next play and get a turnover on downs that gave the Knights’ offense the ball for the first time in the game. The Panthers also looked to break through on their next drive, with the ball carrier thundering all the way from his team’s own 5 yard line to the 50. But he fumbled the ball away, and BSH Football’s Harrison Lee made the recovery to
linebacker T.J. Gates – whom Henderson said is “very solid in all facets of the game” – 6-0 sophomore defensive tackle Wyatt Lowe, 6-3 senior defensive tackle Cameron Arnold, 6-4 senior defensive end Brien Clay, 6-0 senior defensive end Tyler Hall, 6-1 junior defensive back Aaron Nash, 5-10 junior defensive back Anthony Greenhow, 6-2 junior defensive back Jaysun Carroll and 6-0 senior defensive back Tristen Bradley. During a goal-line situation in the scrimmage, Clay shot up the middle and brought down the quarterback for a sack. “Brien made some nice plays at defensive end – it was his first time playing for us – new kid, just moved in,” Coach Henderson said. “We’re really happy with what he did.” Both Greenhow and Carroll had multiple plays where they successfully defended against the pass. During a dash to the right corner of the end zone, Greenhow turned his head in time to shut down the route and defend against the pass intended for the receiver he was covering. A couple players later, Carroll – in just about the same place – dashed into the picture as Greenhow defended the receiver and corralled the airborne ball for an interception. “For the most part I think that they really held up pretty well in the back end,” Henderson said of the secondary. Powhatan will continue to strive for consistency when it hosts Atlee in another scrimmage this coming Thursday (Aug. 29) at Powhatan High School. Scrimmage start time is currently slated for 7:30 p.m.
set up a 46-yard scoring drive that was capped by a red-zone rushing touchdown from Nick Dawson.
In a rush to score When quarterback Trevor Parker found open space, he was hard to contain. The agile junior quarterback not only led the Knights’ rushing attack on the evening, but he found running room up the middle and around the edges and added in multiple zigzagging rushes to continuously shorten the distance between the offense and the goal line. He scored all three of his touchdowns in the second half on a four-yard rush around the right side, a knifing nine-yard dash up the middle and a beautiful 35-yard romp that saw him dart through a hole created
by a block from Chase Musselman. “Musselman had a great block,” Parker said. “He helped me get around the corner.” Musselman also mixed into the run game himself as the six-foot, 240-pound fullback delivered a couple key runs, including an 11-yard punch up the middle to get his team a first down.
Up next Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Football was initially supposed to play its official home opener on Friday, Aug. 23 versus Broadwater Academy, but weather forced the postponement of the game to Friday, Sept. 13. The BSH Knights are next slated to play at King & Queen Central on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

Households wishing to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may make a request either verbally or in writing to: Tracie Omohundro 2320 Skaggs Road, Powhatan, VA 23139 (804)598-5700 Households may apply for free or reduced price meals at any time during the school year. If a household is not eligible now but has a change, such as a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, becomes unemployed or qualifies for SNAP or TANF, the household should contact the school for an application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household's income falls at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines. Households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may not have to complete an application for free or reduced price student meals. School officials will determine eligibility for free meals based on documentation, obtained directly from the Virginia Department of Social Services, that a child is a member of a household currently receiving SNAP or TANF. School officials will notify these households in writing of their eligibility. Households who are notified of their eligibility, but who do not want their children to receive free meals, must contact the school. SNAP and TANF households must complete an application if they are not notified in writing of their automatic eligibility within the first 10 days of the new school year. In accordance with Federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its Agencies, offices, and employees, and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (e.g. Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language, etc.), should contact the Agency (State or local) where they applied for benefits. Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339. Additionally, program information may be made available in languages other than English. To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, (AD-3027) found online at: http://www.ascr.usda.gov/complaint_filing_cust.html, and at any USDA office, or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form.
