OWHATAN – Powhatan County asked its employees for good ideas, and it got them. The county recently announced the winners of the new Process Innovation Grant (PIG) contest, which was held to promote innovation and creativity among staff and hopefully find ways to improve the services offered by the local government. County administrator Ted Voorhees announced on Thursday, Dec. 5 that the winner of the new contest was the building inspector group, whose members – David Dunivan, Mark Casteel, Steve Shaw, and Rick Adams – submitted a recommendation called the “Happy Contractor” project. The project seeks to initiate use of PayGOV. US, a free service for localities, for use as a method of online payment for a permit, re-inspection, and other fees, so that contractors can avoid time-wasting trips to Powhatan County government offices to pay in person. Any re-inspect fee must be paid prior to scheduling inspections and this will allow them to pay over the internet prior to the county’s 3 p.m. cut off time and still maintain their schedule. Dunivan said he knew about the service because it is already in use in Cumberland County, where he

lives. When he learned the counties who use this service do not incur any fees, he and the other three men on his team thought it would be a great resource for Powhatan and collaborated to create a proposal and presentation. “We look forward to implementing it. It is going to make a lot of contractors happy, and it’s going to make everybody’s life a bit easier,” he said. And the best part about the Happy Contractor pitch – adding the service to the county wouldn’t cost any money. This led the PIG committee to name a second-place winner, Alyson Oliver’s “Zoning Hub” project, which was awarded a $1,000 grant. Her idea suggested setting up and implementing an all-in-one zoning information platform for Powhatan County through Zoning Hub (zoninghub. com). The purpose of the PIG

contest, which was announced in the fall, was to create improved workflow through out-of-thebox thinking and concepts that break the typical mold, Voorhees said. The grant is a one-time allocation of funds to be awarded to projects that show process improvement methods to better serve the citizens and save staff time or money. These projects must be completed within the fiscal year and allow for measured results of greater service. The funding does not cover projects for typical budget funding

requests. The innovative entrants were required to fill out an application and to participate in an in-person interview to explain their project. They had to explain how the project would be an improvement to workflow or the customer service experience and include a proposed budget. “It was a lot of fun and I think it shows we’ve got a great staff. As long as we give them opportunities to be creative, they will shine,” Voorhees said. He added that he loved see WINNERS, pg. 8

POWHATAN – Holiday cheer will soon be filling the streets of the Village area as crowds gather to watch the Powhatan Christmas Parade roll through. The parade, which benefits the Powhatan Christmas Mother program, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 along the stretch of Old Buckingham Road from Mann Road to the courthouse area. Organizers are pulling together several hours of fun for the whole family, starting with craft and food vendors filling the Courthouse Green and continuing as different community groups work together to put on a great parade for everyone, said Mary Harrison, Christmas Mother 2006 and one of the parade announcers, along with her husband Roy. Parade sponsor C&F Bank reported last week that it already had close to 40 parade entries and 15 craft and food vendors with the expectation that more would come in by the deadline on Thursday, Dec. 12, Harrison said. They will represent local churches, nonprofit organizations, youth activities groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, businesses and emergency services personnel. This year’s grand marshals will be 2018 Powhatan Christmas Mother and Father Pat and Larry Lyons. The Christmas Mother Everyday Committee has decided it will be an annual tradition to have the previous year’s Christmas Mother as the grand marshal to keep the focus on Christ-

Jeff's nurse arranges with Elizabeth's publisher, Alexander Yardley (Sydney Greenstreet), for Jeff to spend the holiday at Elizabeth’s beautiful Connecticut farm with her husband and baby; however, the column is a sham, so Elizabeth’s publicist friend arranges a scheme for her to host Jeff and Yardley at a mutual friend’s country estate. Holiday chaos ensues as they attempt to keep up the ruse. This classic movie is not rated and run time is 105 minutes. On Oct. 19, a grant ceremony was held at a construction site on Anderson Highway, the location of the 14th home that will be built by Habitat for Humanity – Powhatan. The home should be completed before spring. It was a chilly morning and the volunteers had already begun work when Chandra Hurst of Wells Fargo’s Build grant program handed a $15,000 check to Roseleen Rick, the executive director of Habitat. Rosalina Tarasky of Wells Fargo Bank helped Habitat with the application process and also lined up Wells Fargo employees to help with the construction, including City Heiser the Powhatan Wells Fargo branch manager. “This is the kind of community involvement that helps make Habitat such a great organization. It is truly people helping their neighbors,” said Rick. Also in attendance were Jennifer Hammond, for whom house 14 is being built, and Bobby Shortridge, who is the construction manager.

PET of the WEEK Hello to Everyone! My name is Rambo, and a couple of weeks ago I was the pet of the week, and no one called or came and saw me. I was really hoping when people saw my face, and how handsome I was that someone would come for me, but they didn’t, which made me pretty sad. I just don’t understand why. I am a good boy, and I am up to date on shots and neutered. I am not hyper like some of these younger pups. I really wish to have my own family to spend the holidays with, but I have been here since June with no interest. If you are interested in meeting me, please call 804598-5672 and the staff will be happy to schedule a meet and greet. Also there are others here with the same wish as mine.

School board honors bus drivers for service to students Contributed Report During the month of October, the Powhatan County Public Schools Transportation Department received three separate communications commending three different drivers on building relationships that foster safety on local school buses. It is only fitting that the school district recognize these drivers and their efforts on the heels of National School Bus Safety Week. The first recognition was Pam West. A parent email explained how instrumental West was in fa-

cilitating communication when a kindergarten student that usually rides her bus was put on the wrong bus. West jumped on the radio to help locate the bus the student was riding. This gave dispatch the information they needed to reassure the parent that the student was safe and on the way home. West went the extra step to follow up with the family later that afternoon to check on them. This parent shared how much she values the relationship West has developed with her children and her family through the

years; and she described West as the “kind and caring bookend to her children’s day. The second recognition was Kristie Crouch. Tanja Nelson, principal at Flat Rock Elementary, called to share how Crouch’s calm, proactive response to a situation on her bus was instrumental in Nelson’s ability to resolve something that could have been dangerous. As Nelson worked to inform parents that the situation was averted, it was the relationships that Crouch builds with the students and families on

her bus that parents consistently discussed with Nelson. The division wanted to recognize Crouch for her caring approach, her relationship building, and her concern for students that contributes to their safety. The third recognition was Ann Saunders. A parent email came in to let the school district know it has a “fantastic employee in Saunders. This parent communicated that Saunders has driven her children over a span of 16 years as each has made their way through Powhatan County see BUS, pg. 6

Veterans learn cane is more than a crutch

On Oct. 5, 30 veterans from Powhatan and surrounding areas participated in the Warrior Cane Program at the Powhatan War Memorial Building. This event was hosted by Tom Ashmore and Cane Loyalty from Powhatan and Cane Masters from Lake Tahoe with Grand Master Shuey. The veterans learned that the cane is more than a crutch.

Cub Scout Pack 1838 in Powhatan recently invited retired Navy Commander Pete Greenwald, who is also running for Congress, to speak with the pack about his experience as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. Greenwald brought some items, such as his flight helmet, for the Scouts to see. The Wolf Den of Pack 1838 meets at Passion Community Church every Monday. As part of a requirement for an award, the Scouts needed to speak with someone who is a military veteran and/or a person involved in the community. After the talk, the Scouts wrote a thank you note for the speaker.

“Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.” Like the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics in nature, unmaintained society goes from order to disorder. Unethical and immoral behaviors not even discussed openly a hundred years ago are now openly promoted by influential people in all walks of life seemingly without conscience. Paul said: “In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men.” (Acts 24:16) Blessed are the pure in heart! “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

The Powhatan High School Library hosted a Thanksgiving activity on Nov. 25 that asked teachers to write thankful notes to students and students to write thankful notes to teachers. Librarian Melissa Glanden said she was hopeful to have 20 thankful notes written between students and teachers, but instead saw close to 200 written and delivered! All senders were also entered in a chance to win pies. Glanden said that because of the volume of senders, she increased the number of pies given away, and was able to do that by using a small amount of funds from the Curtis grant received this fall.

Schools. This parent admittedly didn’t know Saunders’ first name, but she described the “incredible sense of safety she feels as she waves to Saunders each day. She went on to describe the conversations in the comANN SAUNDERS munity when she would meet Saunders and the bus driver chatted to catch up on all the children – even the ones she no

longer drives. Saunders’ sense of relationship building is one that adds to the overall safe environment for students the division transports. These three drivers are representative of the positive relationships that drivers throughout the division KRISTIE CROUCH build each and every day as they safely transport the students of Powhatan County Public Schools.

HABITAT Continued from pg. 1

encing drastic problems with their housing that they are not making someone’s dream come true. The nonprofit organization held its annual meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at the Mill at Fine Creek, where supporters learned about the accomplishments of 2019 as well as plans for the future. The accomplishments they could list off were significant, including finishing the local Habitat’s 13th house and starting construction on its 14th; having healthy returns at the Habitat Store; updating the nonprofit’s website, https:// www.habitatpowhatan.org; and 6,166 volunteer hours of work, said Roseleen “Spud Rick, executive director. But perhaps where they were able to see the biggest impact in 2019 so far has been with the local nonprofit’s critical repair program, which started in 2011 and has involved more than $175,000 in repairs and 1,800 volunteer hours on more than 150 projects, she said.

This fall, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School recognized its 2019 Homecoming Court at its Homecoming Game. The Homecoming King and Queen were James Hawkins and Katie Schiefer. Her fellow queen candidates were Elizabeth Carter and Sidney McMinn. The rest of the court was made up of Cabrey Forward, Ninth Grade Princess; Braelyn Lawhorn, 10th Grade Princess, and Emily Smith, 11th Grade Princess.

Since July 1, the nonprofit has performed or been involved in 21 critical repairs. “When we build a house we help one family. When we do critical repairs ‌ we help many more families,â€? she said. At the annual meeting, Rick challenged those in attendance to imagine they were a senior with disabilities and an annual income of $15,610 a year, all of that coming from Social Security or disability checks, and no savings. Now imagine being in that scenario and living with the horrifying reality of black mold all over your bathroom, she said. Think of a woman who worked hard, raised her children, and now is taking care of her grandchildren while living on a modest retirement. Then the roof caves in, literally. Those are realities real people in Powhatan have faced, and Habitat has been able to help them, she said. When Habitat gets that call, they send out the A Team – Dan Niccolucci, Joe Romeo, Bob Butt, and Barry Watkins.

HURRY - LIMITED TIME OFFER!

SAVE 10%

Niccolucci usually goes first to assess the situation and figure out an estimate. When the other men go to the house with an issue, if they can fix it, they get to work. If they don’t have the skills – they don’t replace roofs or do electricity or plumbing – they call local partner contractors. “We are very, very blessed because we’ve got many trades people in the county who are willing to help Powhatan. What they do, in addition to helping us and giving us a break, we move to the top of their list so that the people who need help are not without help for a long period of time, Rick said. Some of the repairs are also made possible because of partnerships with the Coalition of Powhatan Churches and the Powhatan County Department of Social Services. The three organizations recently worked together to help one man replace his roof. When he visits homes of those requesting help, Niccolucci said he usually finds people who are elderly or have disabilities and are living alone. Since July 1, Habitat has responded to a need for six roof repairs or replacements; two homes with miscellaneous

carpentry needs; two window repairs; five drywall and ceiling repairs; four plumbing repairs, one handicap accessible bathroom, and one HVAC repair. “All of these things make living in a home the bare minimum but sensible and safe – that is what we are all about, he said. The need in Powhatan is great, but so too is the capacity of people willing to help, Rick said. Habitat has three main needs: monetary donations, volunteers, and referrals for finding those people who need help the most. “We can help more people than we do, but we need to know where they are. So, if you see someone who needs help, let us know where they are, Rick said. The organization also has needs for donated land, which is hard to come by in Powhatan; volunteers for the Habitat store and donated items to sell there, and volunteers for the construction and critical repair projects. ‘Hamilton’ brought history alive for viewer By Laura McFarland Editor

I

had chills from the first note to the last. Last week I had the privilege of seeing the touring production of “Hamilton” that came to Richmond, and I count myself so fortunate for the experience. For this viewer it was one part history refresher course, one part education about people I don’t remember beyond the basics from my school days, and all parts entertainment on a scale I can’t begin to describe. As I thought back to what I had witnessed during intermission and then again while waiting to get out of a parking space in the parking garage (where this column first started taking shape), I wondered how to capture what seeing this unorthodox retelling of the life one of our Founding Fathers meant to me without it just seeming like a theater review. I could easily talk about how marvelous it was to see the color-blind casting, listen to the amazing music, and witness the wonderful dancing. I could wax poetic about the choice of using the medium of a rap battle to represent Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton debating the formation of the country’s national bank. I could admit unashamedly that I was weeping soundlessly when Elizabeth and Alexander Hamilton mourned the death of their son, who was mortally wounded in a duel – the same way his father would die less than three years later. But while I love theater, seeing “Hamilton” was more than just lip syncing along to some of the catchiest music

in recent musical theater history (though I did that, too). For this viewer, it was a celebration of history and the way it is made. It is a remembrance of battles won and lost, ideas debated by great minds, and ideals fought for by brave men and women. It is an exploration of people we know – or think we know – and trying to translate them into a modern format we can better understand and appreciate. Do I think it was 100 percent historically accurate? No idea. But it made me curious to learn more, and isn’t that the point? For instance, I will admit my shortcomings in not being at all familiar with a young man named John Laurens, who hailed from South Carolina and was an aidede-camp to George Washington during the American Revolution. Despite the fact that his father made the family fortune in the slave trade, Laurens was staunchly anti-slavery. Several biographical articles I found about him online (not Wikipedia) talked about his belief that he thought the republican principles the revolutionaries were fighting for were hypocritical if they continued to use slave labor. During the revolution, Laurens went so far as to propose a regiment of enslaved people be recruited from the South and granted freedom after their military service was over. His plan was ultimately rejected by South Carolina and Georgia, but Laurens kept fighting for the revolution. When I heard he was killed in a skirmish with British forces at the Battle of Combahee River on August 27, 1782, it sounded so familiar. So, during intermission, I looked it up, and, sure enough, it rang a bell for a reason. Recently I watched

One person makes a difference By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

It all seems so overwhelming at times, and, in a society filled with challenges, the idea of one person making a difference appears, at best, remote. And, at this time of the year, the needs of less fortunate people become more visible, and a joyous season reminds all of the plight of many of our fellow Americans. Giving has become part of our holiday tradition, and many groups highlight efforts to assist the underprivileged and provide cheer during a season that would otherwise be joyless. The efforts come in all shapes and sizes, just like the people they serve. There are coat and shoe drives, blanket collections, gifts for children donation programs and food collection, just to name a few. For decades, Christmas Mother programs throughout the region have provided countless smiles and hope for families who could not afford those extra gifts for their children, or that turkey in the oven. Their efforts are in full speed mode as Christmas approaches, and giving to one of these programs means your help will stay in the community and help folks who are your neighbors. These group efforts are a sure sign that goodness and compassion still are important to a society that sometimes moves too fast to notice the ones who are being left behind. But, what about that one person and what difference can they can make? I have been fortunate to witness the efforts of one of these heroes who spends countless hours, money and effort helping less fortunate individuals. He’s an old friend and colleague who now has dedicated his life to assisting homeless and underprivileged people in his neighborhood.

You can regularly catch him at the local McDonald’s purchasing breakfast and hot beverages for people residing on the street. He visits lines of people waiting for shelters to open and hands out clothing items or toiletries. His efforts have become wellknown to those who know him and his goodness. His efforts are pure and from the heart, and he seeks no attention of recognition for his efforts. Knowing this man’s history, a long and frustrating struggle with drugs, I understand his insight and willingness to delve into a problem that, to most of us, seems overwhelming and unsolvable. After dedicating his life to his faith, he was freed from his bonds of addiction and made a commitment to help those who need a hand-up. He knows first-hand that one act of kindness can transform a life, and it’s never too late to change a life for the better. His work is not as glitzy as a mall Christmas tree or as visible as a bell ringer, but the rewards of his tenacity and dedication yield no less important results. I write this story without naming this individual for several reasons. Primarily, it’s his message and work that are important, not his name. And, secondly, I know he doesn't seek publicity or public validation of his efforts. His small network of friends contribute clothes and food to ensure the work reaches more and more people, and he continues to spend his hours before and after work, doing what he considers the Lord’s work, visiting with and contributing to his fellow humans with acts of kindness and generosity. It’s a message that is especially poignant at this time of the year, but, as displayed by his efforts, is important 365 days a year. So, that’s what one person can do. 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-730-0476

“Harriet,” a film that was shot partly in Powhatan County, based on the life of Harriet Tubman. One of Tubman’s greatest achievements was the Combahee Ferry Raid, in which she successfully led a force of Union troops to rescue more than 700 slaves working on nearby plantations. Thinking about the two, I like to think Laurens would have been cheering Tubman and the Union soldiers as they risked their lives to make sure others could live free. All of that quick research sprang out of only a few minutes of the musical. The rest of it posed so many unanswered questions I want to learn more about. But, the story didn’t just raise questions about the history of this nation. For me, this show also was a very real reminder that history is being written right now all around us. There are a few of them that popped into my head repeatedly during the show. Right now, only the fourth case of presidential impeachment inquiries in U.S. history is taking place. Across Virginia, including in Powhatan County, the very real debate about the Second Amendment and how it should be protected is only gaining momentum. And if you think the issues of immigration and figuring out America’s place on the world stage were complicated then, look at the issues we face now. I started this column because of excitement about seeing a great show. I end it thinking about how relevant the issues those men debated and advocated and fought for still are today. It is a show about historical memory and the shaping of that narrative – including the influence we try to exact over the legacy we leave behind. Board of supervisors acted on sanctuary status without gathering enough information Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the Powhatan Board of Supervisors’ vote approving a resolution to declare Powhatan a Second Amendment sanctuary jurisdiction. I support the Second Amendment, but I oppose this resolution on its substance and on the procedural precedent it sets for Powhatan leaders and citizens. The great majority of public comment very strongly supported Second Amendment sanctuary status. However, I heard little or no description of proposed General Assembly legislation in question. During the public comments period, I did not hear one concrete example of how law-abiding, gun-owning Powhatan citizens were going to lose their guns, as repeatedly alleged. Universal background checks and so-called “Red Flag” laws are designed only to keep guns away from criminals and those deemed a threat to themselves or others, not taking guns away from lawabiding citizens.

I believe supervisors David Williams and Carson Tucker were correct in asking the questions about the legal basis of sanctuary status and implications for failure to enforce specific state laws in Powhatan County. They rightfully asked for time before the vote to check with the sheriff and commonwealth’s attorney to determine the potential legal liabilities for leaders as well as Powhatan County itself in refusing to enforce state law. The majority of the board did not heed their advice to wait for this information. Time will tell whether the effect of this resolution passage is an exercise in advocacy for the Second Amendment without legal grounding, or whether Powhatan and other like-minded counties can actually refuse to enforce selected laws passed by the Virginia General Assembly. I respectfully assert that the latter option is not legal, not likely, and not wise. Mike Asip Powhatan County

Water towers painted over Thanksgiving break The water tower on Judes Ferry Road across from Powhatan High School, shown here, and the one on Old Buckingham Road near Powhatan’s Company 1 both got a splash of color Thanksgiving week. The water tanks, which were both plain white before, had the county logo painted on them on Nov. 25 and 26. Suez Utility Service Company, the company that has the service maintenance agreement for both tanks, painted them for a total of $17,674, according to Ramona Carter, director of public works. The logo was adopted by the county in addition to the Economic Development Authority. The county started putting the logo on vehicles, letterhead, signs, etc. When it came time to select an PHOTO BY LAURA MCFARLAND image to paint on the tanks along with the wording, staff considered both the new logo and the county seal, but the seal is very complex and would have been much more costly.

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, the building department issued its 1,000th building permit for the year, Dunivan said. The last time the department saw numbers like this was in 2006 and 2007 during the last big construction boom. “We have been very busy. Actually, throughout this whole year we have been up 20 percent over last year pretty much the entire time,” he said. That is not only a big workload for the county employees to handle, but it is a great deal of time spent by local contractors and business owners having to come to the office to fill out and turn in paperwork, he said. “In the past people have inquired about it. There has been a little bit of frustration of not being able to pay fees online. This would just make everybody’s life a lot simpler and easier and more convenient. Every contractor typically has a cell phone in their pocket that is connected to the internet, so they don’t even have to leave job sites in order to pay fees,” Dunivan said. The project has not been implemented yet because the contest just ended, but county staff will hold meetings at the beginning of the year to implement a pilot program, which hopefully will transition into a full implementation, Dunivan said. “We were all pretty thrilled, because, typically, with a grant you are thinking monetary funds awarded, and ours actually doesn’t cost anything. Any fees incurred are passed along to the contractor or whoever is paying the fees,” he said. “At the same time we are providing another level of customer service at zero expense, and it is actually freeing up county staff time in the process.” Voorhees pointed out that when county staff first began discussing how much would be the right

amount for the grant award to be an effective project, he wondered if there were any ideas that could be executed for free. So he was pleasantly surprised when the building inspector group’s idea proved those options are out there.

Zoning Hub When thinking about an idea to submit for the contest, Oliver said she wanted something that would increase transparency, “especially when it comes to land use and zoning-related cases because they are incredibly hot topics” and becoming increasingly important to more people. The zoninghub.com platform will allow the planning department to easily share information with the general public all in one place, said Oliver, who is a planner II. Some of the most common questions the office receives that could be easily answered online with this service include: What is my property zoned? What can I do with my property? Where can I put my business? What zoning applications are currently under review in the county? Every day, the planning department receives dozens of calls from members of the public with questions like these. Currently, the answers are located in several different documents and map that are available but not always easily accessed, Oliver said. This is confusing for citizens, making it difficult for them to find the answers they need. The Zoning Hub platform would provide answers to these frequently-asked questions in a user-friendly and detailed format, thereby increasing transparency and efficiency. “We get calls every day asking us questions. Sometimes they are really unique, and sometimes they are the same question over and over again – like ‘Can I have chickens on my property?’ We will be able to have all of that stuff in one location so it saves everybody time and allows people to feel like they know where that information is located,” she said. The website also has the capability of letting people sign up to receive notifications any time a new project is proposed near their house or check on pending or approved applications, Oliver said. “It will take awhile to get all the approved ones up there, but starting with current applications, those will be there,” she said, adding a date had not yet been set on getting all of that up and running.

Other projects The county received project proposals from several other employees: Jeffrey Wallace, with the fire and rescue department, proposed using the “First Arriving Digital Dashboard,” a platform that links to the county’s computer aided dispatch to display real-time dispatch information, links to scheduling software to show who is on duty, and lists who will be coming in. Carla Neidigh, with county administration, submitted the Citizen Education Understanding and Service project, which seeks to implement a formalized, multi-faceted, face-to-face citizen-engagement strategy. The strategy consists of town halls, monthly coffee with staff, office tours, focus groups, a county staff night, and other seasonal events. She said, “When citizens know why and how decisions are made, they will have higher satisfaction with county government and are less likely to disseminate erroneous information to their peers. When we learn what citizens consider important, we can make decisions that better represent their interests. More understanding equals smoother and quicker progress.” Tracey Holyfield, with the finance department, suggested “T-Shirt Fridays.” She wrote, “Friday is a casual day, why not take some of the guesswork out of deciding what to wear. Having the option of putting on an orange or black T-shirt with the county logo solves that problem. Casual Fridays offer employees one day's respite from company dress codes, in place of business wear, and dressdown days can be a way to reward employees for good work, thereby boosting morale.” Amanda Zirkle, with human resources, submitted “The Employee Rewards Program.” It would utilize prizes and other forms of incentives, to include team building activities and fun office days, to keep employees engaged, motivated, and feeling valued. Jamie Timberlake, commissioner of the revenue, suggested offering the “Business License Application Online.” Applying for a business license online would save time for both citizens and staff. Voorhees said he will be working with each department to decide how the county could implement all of these great ideas within existing resources or consider them for funding in the next budget cycle.

Knights open new season on back-to-back victories By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor

OWHATAN – Going into the 2019-20 season, seniors Raymond Avery and Robbie Kurtz, who did much of the heavy lifting on offense last year, were expected to lead the way again. Within just the first two games, the pair combined for 94 points and 43 rebounds. But they’re not alone. With hefty contributions from sophomore Zander Nadeau, a newcomer to varsity, and junior Henry Kiefer, Kurtz and Avery helped lead the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights to a 2-0 start to the season. “Being a senior-led team is how we’re gonna win games this year,” BSH head boys basketball coach Chris Hamner said after the Knights’ season-opening 71-26 victory over a young Guardian Christian Academy unit on Dec. 3. “We might be out-matched, we might not have the talent that some other teams in our league do, but hopefully that experience is gonna carry us through some close games where we can upset some people.” Kurtz and Avery were the Knights’ scoring leaders in the opener. Kurtz double-doubled with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Avery landed 17 points and 9 rebounds. After that game, Hamner pointed to the potential for higher totals, as both seniors left some points on the floor against GCA. “They both can shoot it a lot better than they did tonight, but they play hard and they lead and they get to the rim and they know how to attack,” Hamner said of

out a game-high 33 points while double-doubling with 10 rebounds, and Kurtz once again double-doubled, this time with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Last year the team didn’t have another player who could consistently join the duo in going for double-digit points. But in his first game moving up to the varsity level, sophomore Zander Nadeau – who averaged 25 points on JV – had no problem finding the basket against Guardian Christian Academy. He tapped into a rhythm in the second quarter and ended the night with 15 points while also rebounding well throughout the contest.

“Offensively she’s a good shot, making good decisions…we need her.” Late in the stretch, Dolan drove into the lane for two, and sophomores Faith and Terry combined for 9 points against 5 from Huguenot to put the game out of reach. It was a bounce-back win from Powhatan’s season-opening setback to Cosby on Tuesday, Dec. 3 (68-29). In that game, Powhatan faced trapping and offensive turnovers that turned into a ton of transition layups for the Titans. But on Thursday, Coach Henderson said her team did a little bit better job of stopping transition, getting back on defense and forcing turnovers to put the ball back in Powhatan’s hands. The Indians played L.C. Bird on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and will play at Midlothian on Thursday, Dec. 12, 7 p,m. before hosting Goochland on Monday, Dec. 16, 7 p.m.

Zander’s there to get a blocked shot for you.” Henry Kiefer also enjoyed a strong start, totaling 8 points against GCA. He parlayed a steal into two points from the line after he was forced out of bounds on the runback, and he sliced a lasering threepointer through the hoop on the assist from James Hawkins. Both Nadeau and Kiefer hit huge three-pointers in overtime to help their Knights defeat Millwood on Dec. 4. Millwood was led in scoring by William Jackson with 29 points and Prince Anderson with 15 points. The Knights played at Grove Christian on Monday, Dec. 9 and New Community on Tuesday, Dec. 10. They host Tidewater Academy on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. In addition to playing experience, Hamner praised the team chemistry on his Knights “where everybody likes each other.” “Everybody kind of knows everybody…they’re all friends with each other on the court and off the court,” he said. “It’s kind of nice to be able to coach guys where everybody’s just worried about the team…I don’t have to worry about any individuals wanting to score…I definitely am blessed to have 13 guys that care about how the team is going to do.”

win of the season in a wild, back-andforth 170 weight class match. A couple matches before, Johnson’s teammate Luke Wilburn, who had gotten pulled up from JV to get in some mat time, recovered from also being on his back to spin his way to the top and pin his Varina opponent in the 152 weightclass match with 24 seconds left in the first period. “Awesome to watch those kids get their varsity win – that’s always fun… especially new kids like that…they’re just kind of getting their footing,” Powhatan head wrestling coach Jonathan Tanaka said Saturday. Powhatan overall went 2-3 in Saturday’s invitational, defeating both Varina 56-9 and Douglas Freeman 53-21 and falling to Orange 42-24, Chantilly 48-27 and Lee-Davis 35-26. Juniors Sean Hall and Hayden Fitzsimmons both went 5-0. Hall rolled out four first-period pins in his 126 weight class and bumped-up to 132 to wrestle and defeat Varina’s Caleb Olgers by technical fall, 16-1, 45 seconds into the third period. “Sean’s one of those consistent kids that we kind of know what we’re gonna get, which is awesome,” Tanaka said. son, took wins by forfeit against Varina and Lee-Davis and commanded his three matches against Chantilly, Orange and Freeman. He earned his two 182 weightclass wins by pin, then bumped-up to 195 against Freeman and won by pin in the first period. Junior Linwood Hill, starting at 195 but bumping-up to his former 220 weight class for all but five of his matches, went 4-1 with three pins and picked up a last-second takedown to beat Lee-Davis’ Rob Grace by technical fall (20-5) at 195 in the third period. He pinned his Varina, Chantilly and Freeman opponents, all at 220.

Sophomore Andrew Cheatham recovered from an early loss to go unbeaten the rest of the way at 145. All four of his victories in the invitational came by pin – two in the first period against Freeman and Orange, one in the second against Varina and one in the third against Chantilly. Sophomore Tanner Palmore, stepping up into the heavyweight class following the graduation of Jarrett Tronge, shined with a couple of early wins. He opened the meet by edging past Lee-Davis’ Joseph Elaal on a 6-3 decision, then pinned his Varina opponent following a takedown 9 seconds inside the second period.

son took second in the boys’ 100 freestyle (1:02.16), Summer took second in the girls’ 100 breaststroke (1:25.69) and third in the girls’ 200 freestyle (2:27.39), Troy Porter swam third in the boys’ 50 freestyle (27.40, Aliah Greenhow swam third in the girls’ 50 freestyle (32.19), Matthews took third in the girls’ 100 butterfly (1:27.21) and Powhatan’s Sophia Edwards, Reese Smith, Sidney White and Kaitlyn Meador swam thirdbest of the girls’ teams (5:28.09) in the combined 400 yard freestyle relay, which closed out the meet. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s Jenna Schwab finished runner-up (1:07.00) to Louisa’s Lauren Dessent (1:05.85) in the girls’ 100 freestyle and third overall to Goochland’s Abby Pillion (1:05.44) who swam in the third of five heats that comprised the event. Goochland won 15 of 22 individual events, Louisa took first place in 4 events and Powhatan won 3. Powhatan travels to SwimRVA with opposing teams including Colonial Heights in a meet that begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. Returning sophomore Dylan Coward defeated his Orange opponent by pin at 113, sophomore Cade Van Buskirk picked up a win against Freeman at 138 and freshman Kieran Hathaway beat his Freeman opponent by tech fall at 106. Johnson earned his first win by pin of the season in the second period against Freeman. Micah Holt wrestled Lee-Davis in the 220 weight class, but got hurt by an illegal move; it was decided that Holt after getting hit by the move would not be able to continue to wrestle the match, leading to Holt winning by automatic forfeit. Tanaka after the first two team matches said that he was doing all right, but that they would get him to the trainer on Monday and see how that goes. “Really tough kid,” Tanaka said Saturday. “Just a tough break.” Hill wrestled at 220 for the rest of the invitational. Gavin Timmons, Powhatan’s starting wrestler in the 132 class and a two-time state qualifier, was not at Saturday’s meet as he had a pre-existing commitment to participating in a robotics competition on the same day; he and AJ Gaskins are projected to return this coming week and the team is hoping that freshman Britton Proffitt will return soon. Powhatan was slated to host Dinwiddie on Tuesday in its first home meet of the season and will take on the varsity classic at Lee-Davis High School the weekend of Dec. 19-20.
