POWHATAN – A proposal
for a new park in the heart of the Courthouse Village was back in front of the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors last week in a tense discussion that ended with it being approved in a split vote. During the board’s meeting on Monday, Nov. 22, members reexamined an issue that seemed to be put to rest almost two months earlier when members considered a proposal for a small park near the corners of Marion Harland Lane and Old Buckingham Road. But the arrival of newly-elected board member Steve McClung, who represents District 2, revived the issue after he had proposed the park be placed on the board’s agenda again. He said he was motivated by feedback he received from constituents during his campaign in support of the

On Saturday, Nov. 6, co-owners Leslie Cave, CMA, and Larry Denson, CVT, along with Melissa Restrepro, cardiac sonography student, brought all the equipment and supplies to provide this important preventative health care to Free Clinic patients. “Luckily, none of the patients showed any severe health risks,” said Eva Ogunde, the clinic’s medical case manager. “However, two of our patients had arterial blockages that will require closer monitoring and see FREE CLINIC, pg. 3

O B I T UA R I E S MARY BROWN Mary Easton Brown, born January 11, 1943, and died peacefully in the company of loved ones November 24, 2021. She was preceded in death by her true love, Charlie Brown. She was survived by her three children, two brothers, six grandchildren; her dear friend, Geraldine Purnell; and a host of friends. Polly, as she was commonly referred to, never knew a BROWN stranger. May her memory always be a blessing.
FLORA BRYAN Flora "Mae" Bryan, 58, passed away suddenly on Friday, November 19, 2021 at her home in Powhatan County with her husband, Russell Bryan, by her side. She was born in Richmond, Va. in 1963. She was the daughter of the late Charles Redman and Flora Combs Redman. She was also predeceased by her brother, Charles W. "Billy" Redman. Mae was a devoted BRYAN wife and mother. She and her husband, Russell worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for their daughters. She would proudly boast to anyone about her kids and grandkids. She cared deeply for her family and community. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Mae was an avid gardener and always had a meticulous display of flowers around her yard, as well as a large vegetable garden. However, spending time with her grandchildren, Lily and Mia, brought her the most enjoyment. She left a lasting impression on everyone that she met. Her infectious smile and bigger-than-life personality brightened every room that she walked into. She is described by many as a person who would go out of her way to help others when they needed it the most. Mae enriched many lives and will be deeply missed. Mae is survived by her husband, Russell Bryan; daughters, Stephanie Bryan, Jennifer Bryan; granddaughters, Lily Bryan, Mia Bryan; sisters, Nita Redman, Marie Almarode, Lynnie Dalton (Clinton); brothers, Benjamin "Bubba" Redman, John F. Redman, Abraham Redman (Carol); and many beloved nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life was held Saturday, November 27, at 11 a.m. at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home at 3215 Anderson Highway in Powhatan County.
HELEN MASON Helen Hope Chiles Mason. November 23, 1928, was an exciting morning at The Alhambra in Natural Bridge Station, Va. Helen Hope Chiles - Earl and Ellene Chiles' last of eight children - had just been born, and siblings Elizabeth, Lucille, John, Earl, Evelyn, Katherine and Lloyd all wondered what their little sister would be like.
Helen did not disappoint, outliving them all during the course of her remarkable 93-year life, which was punctuated by an ever-present sense of fun, an insatiable interest in others and a memory for detail that put her children, Lee Baker, Ann (Jeff Heidemann) Mason, Ben Mason and Mary Margaret (Tom) Evans, to MASON shame. Even her grandchildren Reilly (Mason), Ford (Baker), Brother (Mason), Davis (Evans), Reid (Mason), Mason (Evans) and Grey (Baker) always knew to come to Gran for the real story when facts were needed. Travel surfaced as an early theme, with Helen splitting the summers and winters of her formative years between St. Petersburg, Fla. and Natural Bridge Station, Va., where her family operated two seasonal hotels. Before the age of 20, she had taken two family transatlantic voyages on both HMS Queen Mary and HMS Queen Elizabeth, her father being a big believer in travel-as-education. Upon graduation from Mary Washington College in 1950, she promptly headed across the country, road-tripping with a girlfriend long before this was fashionable, to land a teaching job in California. This love of travel would wind up taking Helen to all corners of the U.S., and even the globe, with visits to far-flung family members always her favorite trips. Helen married Les, her husband of 54 years, in 1957, and they began their own family chapter in Powhatan. An avid volunteer with passion for community, Helen was the first Christmas Mother of Powhatan, a founding auxiliary member of the Fine Creek Club, a Powhatan Garden Club member, Class Mother on countless occasions for her children at Huguenot Academy (now Blessed Sacrament Huguenot), founder of the Powhatan chapter of Girl Scouts U.S.A., and a leading actress and founding member of "The Fine Arts Five" - one of the best local theatre troupes to grace the county. She was the last remaining charter member and a past-President of the Powhatan Women's Club. A great lover of entertaining, Helen enjoyed both hosting events at The Glebe and dining out frequently, where she would often come up with guessing games for all in attendance, complete with gifts and prizes for all nine, win or lose, from her famous "white envelope." The "Ding-a-lings" was her longest-standing lunch group, meeting every December 21 for an incredible 44 years. An ultimate testament to Helen's love of fellowship and gatherings was her remarkable staying power over three full days of birthday surprises in the fall of 2018, when scores of close friends and family members came together in Richmond to celebrate her then incredible 90 years of life. A lifelong Christian but loath to show preference among denominations, Helen chose to spread her faith across several churches - serving the congregations of Beth Horon United Methodist, Providence Presbyterian and May Memorial Baptist as a stalwart choir member and all-around activist within these church communities
at different phases of her life. Helen, Mom, Mrs. Mason, Gran and Aunt Helen left us on Thanksgiving Day 2021, but will always be happily in our hearts. Aside from her children and grandchildren, she is survived by 13 nieces and nephews, 19 grandnieces and nephews and 20 greatgrandnieces and nephews, all of whom were fortunate to have been touched by her amazing life and generosity, as were so many friends of all ages. Her graveside service will be for immediate family only, per her request. Should you wish, donations may be made in her honor to the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc.

park. A lengthy, and at times tense, discussion ensued at last week’s meeting that was still being argued even after the park was officially approved in a 3-2 vote. In addition to McClung, the park was once again supported by chair Karin Carmack, District 5, and Mike Byerly, District 3. David Williams, District 1, and Bill Cox, District 4, voted against it. At this point, the only information that has been presented to the public is a rough color drawing of the proposed park and a non-itemized $50,000 construction cost estimate provided by Timmons Group, as well as an estimate of $800 annually in maintenance costs. The park will be paid for using the county’s capital maintenance reserve fund. Included in the $50,000 estimate are pathways, picnic tables, a pollinator garden, educational signs, a picnic shelter with potential for a solar display and landscaping, according to the drawing. Carmack first proposed the park on Sept. 27 as part of a presentation to have a community Christmas tree and an adjoining Village Park. At the time, all of the board members stated their support for a community Christmas tree on a small parcel of land between two parking lots along Old Buckingham Road across from Four Seasons Restaurant.

However, when it became obvious that Williams, Cox and then-interim District 2 representative Tom Berry were against the idea of a larger park in addition to the tree, the matter was dropped by general agreement without an official vote being taken and with only the Christmas tree getting the goahead. While Byerly had given a lengthy argument for the park at the September meeting, touting it as a good investment in citizens and a way to beautify the Village area, McClung was the only one who made an argument for it last week, saying he was simply listening to what his constituents had overwhelmingly told him they wanted. Instead, the majority of the time spent on the subject was done by Williams and Cox. Williams said repeatedly that he was for a park that would add to the ambience of the Village but he didn’t think the pollinator park Carmack suggested was the right fit for the area. He said a pollinator park will be brown 50% of the year. “My problem with the pollinator park from day one has just been with the pollinator park, because I didn’t feel like it was a good fit in the historical district. I still don’t think it is,” Williams said. “And I want to, like I said, make sure that whatever park that we do, if we choose that, we are going forward with a park, that we do it with our eyes wide open,

Cox was also stridently opposed approving the park outside of the normal CIP process, which includes being vetted in the parks and recreation committee’s priorities list. He took issue with more than just the pollinator park, arguing there would be no trees since they are slated to be cut down because of their encroachment over an adjacent parking lot that is set to be paved. He also took issue with the design, saying it is not reflective or meditative, outlined the pitfalls of a proposed pollinator park in such a small, isolated space and scoffed at the “innovative” use of solar panels. Cox argued there was no grant, merely an opportunity. He also claimed that the Christmas tree only passed because of him, Williams and Berry, which an irate Carmack called an “out and outright lie.” free of charge on a quarterly basis. Free Clinic volunteers expressed appreciation for Cave and Denson’s commitment to the Powhatan community.
Carmack also said there was a grant through Dominion Energy that, if the county were approved for it, might have covered a high percentage of the park’s cost but not all of it. The grant called for a project that was “educational, innovative and an asset to the community,” which were considered when the design was created, but when there wasn’t enough board support for the park in September, efforts to apply for the grant faltered. Two women also spoke during the public comment period in favor of the proposed park in the Village.

Fear of needles keeps some from being vaccinated By Barbara Brown
Special to the Powhatan Today
No one likes injections, yet for most folks the benefits of immunizations are worth the brief discomfort. Judging only by schedules for routine vaccinations and tests, the average healthy person can expect at least 165 needle sticks over a lifetime. Although it’s not often discussed, adults can fear needles as much as children. Trypanophobia, or a fear of needles, is surprisingly prevalent. About 25% of adults are afraid of needles, and around 7% of adults avoid immunizations because of their fear. Just to be clear: this fear is not limited to people who are overly sensitive to
pain or aren’t “tough enough.” The cause is often unknown, but a particularly traumatic experience during a childhood medical illness may set the stage for some people. And, there may be a genetic component. Researchers have found genes linked to fainting after needle sticks, and trypanophobia sometimes runs in families. There’s not much high-quality research regarding how best to treat trypanophobia. Experts suggest a number of options to help people cope. The first step is to share your concern with your health provider. Let them know what you think will work for you to get you through the vaccination. Some people prefer to hear about each step before it happens so there are

Hi-ya there! We’d like to introduceourfriendSmudge! Smudge is a torti/calico cat. She was surrendered to us a few weeks ago because her family was moving and she couldn’t go with them. Smudge is 2-3 years old, spayed, up to date on shots, and received a clean bill of health from the doctor! Smudge is a sweet cat who would do best in a calm home where she can be a couch potato and watch T.V. Smudge with you! She is litter box trained and a pretty clean girl overall. She really misses being with a family so if you’d like to come meet Smudge please call 804-598-5672 or email animalcontrol@powhatansheriff.net. We’d like to see her find a loving family to spend the holidays with and the rest of her life. no surprises. If you get woozy or faint during injections, see if you can lay down or sit to receive it. Ask if you can bring someone for support. Holding the hand or hearing the voice of a spouse or trusted friend helps reduce anxiety. Harness the power of distraction. Focus on anything other than the needle stick: a spot on the floor, a face or your upcoming vacation. Don’t watch! It’s not helpful to watch all of the preparation for the stick or see the needle itself. Watching may make things worse.Try deep breathing or other relaxation techniques that you can practice before having the shot. People with severe fear may need an anti-anxiety or other type of drug to get them through the process. If behavioral
see a friendly face on an otherwise lonely day. Some wanted to show their gratitude for what they have in their own lives by giving to others. Whatever the reason was that brought them there, each church served dozens of meals at their respective locations either via a drive-through service or having them sit down to break bread together. At Unity Community Church’s outdoor Unity Around the Table, David Varnier of Powhatan attended the event for the second time. In addition to not cooking much, Varnier had a stroke in September that he is still recovering from, so he truly appreciated the church offering the free meal. “I think it is fantastic,” he said. On the other side of the table, Minister Brenda Nash was there serving at UCC’s meal for the second year because she likes working with people and appreciates outreach ministry and the smiles they brought to people’s faces. “Some people don’t even get a good homecooked meal all year. We decided at this church to continue to make this a success so people could have a holiday meal,” she said. Serving beside her was CeCe Rollins, another church member, who was there volunteering with her husband, Francisco Jr., and their three children, Monroe, 8, and twins Joelle and Francisco III, 2. The family actually started serving at the 2020 meal at Monroe’s request, and they had such a good experience they decided to make it a family tradition to serve there before going home and having their own meal. “It is a blessing. I am truly blessed by it,” she said. “For my son to take the initiative to lead us to do it … we wanted to make sure we encourage him to always live out his dreams and his aspirations and what he wanted to do. We want to support him in a full way.” Dawn Jones of Amelia picked up to go meals at Graceland Baptist Church to take home for her family and family members that came for a visit. Jones, who attends the church’s regular fourth Thursday meal, said Graceland has been such a blessing to her family every month and to have the special Thanksgiving meal last week made the day that much more special. Sue Pass, a Graceland member, said she came out to
options fail, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Immunizations are not just for youngsters anymore. To maintain their health, adults are asked to get vaccinations for shingles, influenza and newer infectious diseases such as COVID-19. With increased life expectancy, adults need boosters for childhood diseases such as pertussis, too. If fear of getting a shot is keeping you or someone you know from receiving recommended preventative care, there are behavioral and pharmaceutical options for addressing the fear. There is no reason to be embarrassed. Fearing an injection is not being weak; it’s normal. Ask for help. Barbara Brown, PhD, is a board member of the Free Clinic of Powhatan.
join in the meal and support the church’s mission of sharing God’s love in a tangible way with people. “We can touch others that we don’t normally get to touch and tell them we love you, we are just like you, and whatever support you need, we are here to offer that,” Pass said. Veronica and Jolly Ndaanee, who were originally from Nigeria, have become regulars at the Thanksgiving meal at Graceland through their friendship with one of the pastors. They think it is a great thing for the church to do to reach out to those who cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal or don’t have anywhere else to go. But rather than limiting their thanks to the one day, Veronica added, “we embrace it but not only one day in the year. We give thanks to God every day that we see a new day in life.” At Passion Community Church, French said it was wonderful to serve people and have them sit down at large round tables to eat in groups, whether they know each other or not. “We are trying to feed them in a group so they will feel like they have family with them,” she said. Eddie and Jennifer Adkins, PCC church members, have been coming with their three children to the Thanksgiving meal for four years. Eddie said it is comfortable and reminds them of holiday family meals of years past. “That is what Passion Community Church is – it is drawing everybody in the community and outside of the community to come to church and to be part of the family so you get to know more people,” he said. Melissa Nicholson, another PCC member, said this was her second time volunteering at the church meal so she can serve others and be with the community. She helped with some of the prep and serving work and said everything came together and felt really special. “There are so many folks that this time of year is really hard because of depression or there are some folks who have lost family members and don’t really have anybody close by. To be able to come together as a community and celebrate together is really special,” said Nicholson. Laura McFarland may be reached at Lmcfarland@ powhatantoday.com.

Cumberland County Cumberland Library fills December with holiday fun Contributed Report
The Cumberland County Public Library has released plans for the holiday season and the public is invited to participate with all events taking place during the library’s regular operating hours. The celebrations at the library will begin with the annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6. The event will feature music selections sung by the Cumberland Middle School choir, directed by Victoria Kinney, followed by group singing of favorite Christmas carols. The Friends of the Library are excited to bring back their Holiday Boutique, which was a fixture at the library for several years. Featuring an assortment of items donated to the library and offered for sale, the boutique allows residents to shop locally for holiday gifts and support their public library at the same time. Several of the items are oneof-a-kind and include options suitable for family, friends and even pets. Many are also priced at $5 or less. The boutique will be held from Dec. 9 to 11 (during operating hours) along with a bake sale of seasonal favorites. As part of their Boutique, the Friends are also raffling off a hand-drawn portrait of Kobe Bryant, which is on display at the library. Local artist Taleatha Scott completed the drawing using graphite and the work of art was framed by Freddie Gamage of Cumberland. Tickets for the art raffle are $1 each or six tickets for $5 and can be purchased at the library. The drawing for the picture will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11 and you do not need to be present to win. The last day of the Boutique is also the library’s Holiday Open House. The Open House will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and provides a chance for community residents to check out changes that have been made at the library, look at all of the new materials that have been added, and enjoy a Christmas cookie. Children are invited

to visit with Santa that day from 11 a.m. to noon and get a goody bag for stopping by. Parents can bring their own cameras or phones to take pictures of their child with Santa. According to Cumberland County Public Library Director Lisa Davis, “Our holiday activities are a way to involve the whole family in kicking off the Christmas season. Make plans to participate in the lighting of the community’s tree on Monday and join in as we sing old familiar holiday favorites. Then drop by at the end of the week to shop the boutique, buy some baked goods for the holidays, visit with Santa, and take a chance on a beautiful work of art. We’ll have something for everyone that week.” To contact the library about anything mentioned above, call the library at (804) 492-5807 or send an email to cumberlandlibraryva@gmail.com. Holiday meals show county’s helping heart By Laura McFarland Managing Editor
Thanksgiving is about homecoming. At least, that is how I have come to view it. Since I left Texas to start my professional career on the East Coast almost 15 years ago, I have tried most years to get home for one of the bigger holidays in my family – Thanksgiving or Christmas. Often we alternate which one is the big one to allow couples to visit with the other sides of their families. This year Christmas will be the “big one.” Thanksgiving with my family in Texas is about the same thing it is about for many people across the country – family and food. Since those are actually the main reasons I love to visit Texas, Thanksgiving brings all the joy of a regular visit magnified exponentially. Unfortunately, traveling wasn’t in the cards for me this Thanksgiving as I was frankly a little too tired. Instead, I decided to have a low-key Powhatan Thanksgiving and thought it would be a great opportunity to finally make it out to visit some of the local congregations who give up part of their Thanksgiving
Day to hold community meals for anyone who wants to come. The three churches that I knew about having a special meal this year were Unity Community Church, Graceland Baptist Church and Passion Community Church, all of which I am familiar with as doing great things in the Powhatan community and beyond. When I first started planning this, I worried about the logistics. But someone must have been smiling down on me from above, because the churches all started their two-hour events at different times one hour apart starting at 11 a.m., a scheduling marvel that allowed me to visit, take photos, talk to church members and visitors at each location and still make it to the next event while it was in full swing. And while yes, technically I was working on a holiday, it still felt good to be there with those congregations and the people they served. People were genuinely joyful, giving, thankful and kind, and isn’t that the kind of atmosphere we all want on our holidays? And, yes, there was also some good food to take home, for which this not so culinary-inclined person
was happy to eat for a few more meals. I said at the beginning of this column that Thanksgiving is a homecoming. Yet this year, even though I couldn’t be with the rest of my clan, I still felt some of that sense of homecoming. So maybe I need to modify the holiday’s key factors to be togetherness and food. If you read the Thanksgiving story on Page 1A, you will learn that people participated in these events for a number of reasons. One woman had lost her husband and wanted to do something meaningful. One family was led by their 8-year-old son to live out the expression “do unto others.” One man is still recovering from a stroke and likely wouldn’t have had much of a Thanksgiving meal were it not for one of the churches. And there were other stories I didn’t get a chance to tell but that were still important. Whatever the reason they came – whether their purpose was to serve or receive – the fact that they had a place to go to accomplish it was wonderful. I know Powhatan is not unique in these opportunities, but the fact that we do have them is a testament to the heart for community so many people here possess. It’s because these games have stood the test of time eluding fads and fancies that come and go with every generation, and have a unique attractiveness that keeps us coming back for more. There’s no argument that levels of popularity vary as time passes, but there is that secret something that makes some sports immune from fickle fans always looking for the latest craze or newest sport. Which brings me to some new sports that I am not at all certain will endure that same scrutiny or enjoy similar popularity for decades to come. That’s not to discount the enormous talent it requires to play any competitive sport…. and getting on television to compete, that’s a whole new level. I was exposed to one of these newfangled forms of competition earlier this year when an event captured my attention as I was flipping channels. “We’ll be back with more death diving after these messages,” the announcer said, providing a tiny tease of what was to follow. I had a minute or two to spare and I’m a sucker for carnival type barkers that always promise more than they deliver, so I waited. To be honest, they had me at death diving. Envision a site akin to the cliffs in Mexico where divers plunge hundreds of feet in to treacherous waters. The death diving participants gather on a wooden platform sitting atop of a rocky ledge. Without warning, they run full speed and propel themselves skyward, making no effort to compose themselves in some suitable position for entry that might alleviate serious injury. They perform what appears to be the ultimate belly flop, some-
times staring at the judges in defiance of the impending doom. At the very last second, they reach for the toes and try to achieve some sort of geometry that allows them to survive the attempt. Judges score the attempts on how long they achieved the perfect parallel belly flop before assuming a semi acceptable entry position. The results were announced for the six contestants, an equal number of men and women. It was noted that the original lineup featured 12 entries, but half withdrew due to injury. No Kiddin! A few days later I witnessed another sport that my better judgement suggests will not test that aforementioned test of time. It’s called Spikeball. Teams of two line up around a circular net, and bounce an oversized tennis ball aimed at the competitor. They must return the serve with a return bounce off the net. I suppose the one rule is that the ball cannot hit the ground. The action was fast and furious, but lacked something, which made me search for other viewing options. Several days later, I discovered a game many of us played as toddlers has made its television debut in a series of contests where the participants chase each other through obstacles and try to touch them. You’d be correct in assuming this is what we called Tag. I watched one of the episodes but, somehow, the lack of mosquitos and the fact that not a single soul got pushed with an aggressive shove through a row of shrubbery, made it less than captive programming for me. Who knows? All of these contests might achieve enormous popularity and become a staple of the American sports scene; or they might enjoy a more low-key popularity as one of the sports people play that you’ve never heard of. And I’ll admit that any exercise is good exercise. 8460 Times Dispatch Blvd., Mechanicsville, Va 23116 Phone: 804-746-1235 Toll Free: 877-888-0449 Fax: 804-344-8746

nior center in Charlottesville, looking for ideas that will further the discussion on increasing Powhatan’s offerings for seniors. The trip came after recent discussions and speakers approaching the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors about the need for seniors to have a designated space to call their own. Shirley Royal of Powhatan organized the recent road trip, which saw the group taking a tour of The Center to explore one example of what a senior center can be. Royal said she was impressed with the senior center’s offerings in the areas of fitness, lifelong learning, recreation, arts, volunteering and travel. “I thought the things they were doing were fantastic. If you don’t want to do any of the activities, you can come up and meet your friends or family and sit and have coffee and conversation. It is just a place for seniors to get away and do things,” she said. Many of the Powhatan se-
niors who went on the trip are part of Community Matters, a group that meets weekly at the Rescue Squad Building to offer seniors a place for fellowship and entertainment. Local seniors are interested in a place they can call their own and not have to set up and tear down materials before and after each meeting, Royal said. Although aging has its limitations, the elderly still have much to offer a community, said Betty Ashmore of Powhatan. Unfortunately, they are often overlooked because of the perception of aging. “Although aging has its limitations, the elderly still have much to offer a community. Unfortunately, they are overlooked because of the perception of aging,” she said. “Seniors need a central location the same as you would have a boys club or a girls club. You need a central place to put your ideas together to fulfill your needs so that you can continue to give to the community. “Seniors are the ones who can volunteer their time, their resources and their experi-

ences, so the need for a senior center is really important. All of us, like it or not, are going to get there,” Ashmore added. Ashmore said she was extremely impressed with the Charlottesville structure and how it appealed to so many interests, whether it is active people looking to get up and move or those seeking more sedentary offerings. But regardless of the interest or activity, the key factor was that the space was their space, she added. “It was extremely impressive. They thought of everything that seniors could possibly need for all ages of seniors,” she said. Of course the Charlottesville senior center is exponentially larger than anything local seniors might expect to achieve right away, said Norbert “Nobby” Hicks of Powhatan. But some of the seniors who went on the tour remarked how The Center’s origin stretches back to a group of senior women starting to meet back in 1960. “We talked about it that Powhatan wouldn’t be near on that scale but it is a good reference point,” Hicks said. 23901). Girls, boys basketball launch seasons By Robby Fletcher

fter winning five of their last eight games in a shortened season, the Indians are looking to carry that momentum into the 2021-22 season. With numerous contributors returning from last year’s team and three senior leaders at the forefront, Powhatan girls basketball is looking like a true contender to head coach Kristy Henderson in the grueling Dominion District. At the end of last season, the predominant theme in Powhatan’s play was their ability to adjust and adapt. Perhaps the greatest piece of evidence supporting this was the way they responded in their second matchups with teams. Defeating L.C. Bird after losing by 21 in the season opener, taking down Midlothian by nine points after losing by 10 in their third game in the season and nearly upsetting James River after an initial nine-point loss are all examples of how this team battled and responded against their district opponents. The Indians will be led by seniors Faith Henderson and Kayla Terry as the team captains. Henderson, a fouryear player, was an all-around presence and vital piece to Powhatan’s late-season success, averaging 19 points, seven rebounds, and two steals per game. Having earned Second Team All-Region honors after her sophomore season, Henderson is a proven talent with a chance to give Powhatan one of their best seasons in school history. Alongside Henderson is Terry, who committed to the University of Lynchburg in September. Like Henderson, Terry was included on the All-Region Team as an honorable mention in her sophomore year. As one of the team’s top defenders and playmakers, the senior guard looks to be the glue that holds the offense together. Rounding out the senior leaders is guard Meghan Hodge, who is in her third season with the team. Aside from its captains, Powhatan will also receive a boost on both ends of the floor from returning players like junior Erin Almond, a three-year player who proved to be a capable scoring threat last season, as well as sophomores Corynn Lampman and Katherine Cerullo. Lampman and Cerullo already took advantage of the roles they were given as first-year players, but one of the more interesting developments will be what they can do with even bigger roles this year. Cerullo was particularly impressive at the end of last season after scoring a combined 27 points in the last two games against James River and Cosby. While the team is filled with experience, they will be missing Jillian Ratliff, who was the lone senior on the team last season. ith the Powhatan Indians boys basketball season getting underway this week with their season opener against Maggie L. Walker on Nov. 29, it’s time to look ahead to what the 2021-22 varsity team brings to the table in the Dominion District. Coming off a 3-9 season last year where they played just 12 district-only games, the Indians enter the season with a group of fresh faces and a good deal of experience, boasting a roster with seven juniors and a senior. This is the team’s third season in the competitive Dominion District, and also the third season for head coach Ryan Marable. Marable will look to replace four starters from last year’s team, including top scorer L.J. Alston. Marable said he has a roster full of players looking to take advantage of the increased responsibility. “I think they’re excited about it being their turn and knowing what it takes to play in the Dominion District and to win games,” he said. Matthew Hempfield, the lone senior on the team, looks to lead the way as both a leader and playmaker. Hempfield is in his second season with the Indians and is coming off a year where he averaged nearly 12 points per game while shooting 37% from the field. Hempfield was also the team’s leading facilitator, averaging 2.5 assists per game. Hempfield will have plenty of help in the backcourt, with Trinity Episcopaltransfer Jack DeBord coming to Powhatan this season. The 6-foot-3-inch guard projects to be one of Powhatan’s best on-ball creators, showcasing a smooth shooting stroke and an ability to get downhill into the paint with ease. Junior Oscar Whitelyis also returning to the team. Whitley, like many of the juniors on this team, is expected to receive a heavy bump in his minutes this season, and his talent as a slasher will undoubtedly prove useful. Another interesting player to keep an eye out for is freshman Matthew Henderson. Henderson, the son of Powhatan’s girls varsity head coach Kristy Henderson, is expected to start for the Indians after impressing on the JV team as an eighth-grader. Though Henderson won’t be asked to carry the load for the team, his lights-out shooting ability and versatility defensively will be big for the Indians. “We’re not asking too much of him; we just want him to do what he does well, and that’s a little bit of everything,” Marable said. With a roster on the smaller side, Marable intends to run a 5-out motion offense predicated on early offense, dribble penetration and spreading the defense out to the perimeter. With constant ball movement, Marable said he believes the team can create a balanced scoring attack. “It’ll be a collective effort,” he said. “We want to play harder and smarter.” On the defensive end, the team will be using a man-to-man, switch-heavy phisee BOYS, pg. 2B
C&F Banks AthleteAthlete of the of Week C&F Bank’s the Week FIELD HOCKEY ALL-STAR WHO: JORDAN KRAUSS WHAT SHE DID: After a stellar season that saw the Powhatan Indians finish 12-4, Krauss was one of three Powhatan field hockey players to be named on the VHSL First Team All-Region in Region 4B.
Krauss, a senior captain, had been on the varsity team for all four years and was one of the driving forces behind a Powhatan team that shut out eight teams while outscoring opponents 69-16. At right forward, Krauss had been a constant bolt of energy on the attack as both a playmaker and scorer, helping the team win six of their last 10 games of the season.
“Jordan is what makes our offense ‘go’ at right forward,” head coach Stephanie Tyson said. “She is excellent at distributing the ball and is a major scoring threat. She has excellent leadership skills along with her athletic ability.” Krauss got to share her last season on the team with her sister, Erica, who was a freshman and top scorer for the Indians.

Contributed Report Effective immediately, the Virginia Department of Health’s Chesterfield Health District will offer booster shots for all three of the COVID-19 vaccines for all adults at the Community Vaccination Center (CVC) located in the Rockwood Shopping Center at 10161 Hull Street Road in Midlothian. The booster vaccine can be obtained by anyone 18 and older at least six months from the date of their second mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) COVID-19 vaccine or at least two months from the date of their Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, the Rockwood CVC offers first, second and additional primary COVID-19 vaccines at no cost to the public. The Moderna vaccine and the single-dose Johnson & Johnson are available for anyone 18 and older. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is available for anyone 5 and older. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18. To make an appointment visit vaccinate.virginia.gov or call 877-VAXIN-V(877-829-4682, TTY users call 7-1-1). Assistance is available in Eng-
lish, Spanish, and more than 100 other languages. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are strongly encouraged, especially for children, to reduce wait times. Individuals with an appointment should plan to arrive no earlier than 20 minutes prior to the appointment time. Normal hours are from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Individuals who are eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster dose may choose which vaccine product they would like to receive as a booster. For those individuals that choose a different product than their primary series, VDH urges you to consult with your doctor or healthcare provider who can assist you in making the best decision for your own situation. If you are coming for your second, third or booster dose, bring your vaccine card to confirm the date and type of vaccine you received in previous doses. Learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, its safety and answers to frequently asked questions at VDH’s website, https://www.vdh.virginia. gov/covid-19-vaccine/, and CDC’s website, https://www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines.

Powhatan Elementary School students and staff are Santa’s helpers! They have all been donating items for the adult males served by Powhatan Christmas Mother. School principal Constance Deal and her helpers Cindy Pruitt and Lori Preston helped Christmas Everyday Committee member Frances Morris fill a cart full of combs, nail clippers, word search books, socks, cards and other items that will fill stockings and gift bags for delivery. The school embraced the joy of giving and this year many school children and staff enjoyed the warmth of giving. Many local men will be opening Christmas surprises because of their generosity.
