Rebooted & Ready to Roll

ith the New Year here, everyone is rushing around to the gym to make his or her resolutions a reality. At PASMAG, we take our resolutions very seriously, so we grabbed our lovehandles and set out to trim the fat and build our muscle. This is the time of year when everyone starts to let things slide and go back to takeout and Netflix. Not us! We looked good before, but now we look amazing. We beefed ourselves up and we’re looking finer than ever. Welcome to a new PASMAG, welcome to series 16! We think our hard work is paying off.

CONNECT We’ve got a bunch of new stuff ready for you, so buckle up. We’ve added a new Trending section to keep you filled in on everything you should care about. Vehicle features, social media buzz, the latest trends, even show coverage and event spotters guide are all jammed in there. Look out for some stellar Tokyo Auto Salon and CES coverage as well as a spotters guide to our Tuner Battlegrounds competition. Speaking of which, there’s an even larger focus on our Tuner Battlegrounds winner Salik Zaki and his crazy xA in this issue, so look out for his awesome feature, which follows his each and every move to victory. Another very exciting addition to our mag is the Legends series, which will highlight and chronicle the people who made the scene and the sport what it is today. We’re stoked to have Stephan Papadakis as our first entry and hope you look forward to getting to know the Honda fanatic turned race driver and team manager. Vehicle features are amazing this time around, in our humble opinion. We have a gorgeous tribute story to the great Colin McRae, a kickass time attack M3, a Mustang Shelby full of ARC Audio goodness, and a Hybrid Audio BMW ready blow the competition away. Our experts - whether it be motorsport or show - have all of the bases covered with insights into Formula D, Import Face-Off, GRC, and more. We’ve all played the Need For Speed games growing up. They probably inspired you to get involved in the tuning and racing scenes in the first place. We’re very excited to say we’ve seen the movie and we have the inside scoop on leading man Aaron Paul and his high-octane journey in the Need For Speed film. Get everything you need to know from us first before you buy your tickets, and look out for some of our props while you watch. Thanks for picking up this issue of PASMAG. We hope you like what you see and will join us again next issue!

We wanted to know more about how Ian Yu’s lastest project car came together, so we decided to let the owner of Intuned Online tell the story himself. So Ian, why did you build this FR-S? “Actually, it’s kind of a funny story. I missed having a serious project car since my first build (DC2 Integra) was stolen. I was just fine tuning it where I wanted it to be. Over the past few years I’ve tried to fill the void with a few cars, but they didn’t quite fit what I was looking for. After I saw the announcement for Toyota or the new To T yota FT-86 (Scion FR-S),), I thought it was a really cool car thatt had potential. Scion Canada gave uss one ffor a week to o try out during the launch. It was even better er than I had imagths befo f re the fo ined. About two months before e brainstormed 2013 SEMA Show, we ding a car for f some ideas of building ing on a the event. After working e doing with collaboration we were et Bunny ny ny y,, he Kei Miura from Rocket Bunny, ictures of began sharing some pictures the Version 2 Rocket Bunny n ny Kit for the FR-S. I loved ed the way the kit was put ut together and after er our discussions we found out there were five being eing made for SEMA, none

To celebrate the public debut of the 2015 Ford Mustang at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, Ford hosted members of the media at a special preview of the upcoming Need For Speed film. It features a Mustang Shelby GT500 as its hero car, as well as the big screen debut of the 2015 model. The hero of the film, a parolee named Tobey Marshall, is played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. Behind all the helicopter chasing, cop avoiding and Koenigsegg crashing madness is certified-gearhead and stuntman-turned-director Scott Waugh, whose resumé includes work on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Bruce Almighty, The Last of the Mohicans and much more. “I can’t think of a cooler car myself than Steve McQueen’s in Bullitt,” he told Jim Farley, Ford
VP of Global Marketing, after the 20-minute preview. “He drove a Mustang then, and I wanted to pay homage to Steve, and we put the new Mustang in the movie.” Tobey drove a modified ’14 GT for most of our preview, however. Afterwards, Waugh revealed to PASMAG that he has an even more personal connection with Ford’s pony car. “When I was 16, my best friend bought a ’66 Mustang. Which really bummed me out, because I didn’t want to be like my friend and buy another Mustang,” he said. “It’s a car my brother had and when I wanted to go out and put the pedal down…it was the Mustang.” Perhaps it’s the purity of the classic muscle/pony cars that inspired Waugh as he developed NFS; one of the most important facts he stressed throughout our conversation was that none of the chases were CGI-based; it’s all real. “There’s something in us that calls ‘BS’,” he said of watching CGI-based NEEDFORSPEED car chases. “You can really see if it’s a fake car or NEEDFORSPEED not. This movie’s coming out in 3D and what 3D NFSMOVIE does, is it really shows you that everything’s real.”

NEED FOR SPEED
Q&A INTERVIEW BY JORDAN LENSSEN
PASMAG WAS RECENTLY AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT DOWN WITH THE DRIVING FORCES BEHIND NEED FOR SPEED, DIRECTOR SCOTT WAUGH AND AARON PAUL, THE FILM’S LEADING MAN AND STAR OF BREAKING BAD, THE ACCLAIMED TV SHOW THAT ENDED ITS RUN LAST FALL. IN NEED FOR SPEED, WHICH IS BASED ON THE POPULAR ELECTRONIC ARTS GAME FRANCHISE, PAUL PLAYS TOBEY MARSHALL, A RACER WHO CLIMBS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF SOMEOF THE MOSTAWESOMEPERFORMANCEMACHINESEVER TOCLEAR HISNAME, HONOR A FRIEND’S MEMORY AND WIN THE BIGGEST UNDERGROUND STREET RACE IN THE WORLD.IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT AFTER SEEING THE ADVANCE SCREENING WE HAD PLENTY OF QUESTIONS TO FIRE AT THIS DYNAMIC DUO, MANY OF WHICH STARTED WITH ‘HOW’D THEY DO THAT?’ SCOTT AND AARON WERE NICE ENOUGH TO OBLIGE. PASMAG How were you approached for the film? Was this something you always wanted to do? SCOTT WAUGH I wanted to do a car movie because I grew up on those. After Act of Valor came out, Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider (Principal Partner / Co-Chairman / CEO of DreamWorks) wanted to meet with me and see what I was doing next. EA (Electronic Arts) had approached me originally a year ago and they wanted me to come up with an idea for the Need for Speed movie
because they were developing it and I’d been working on some of their other genre projects in EA: Battlefield and Medal of Honor. So I came up with an idea, and the Gayton brothers came up with an idea, and my idea sucked obviously, so they didn’t go with me, they went with the Gayton brothers. But they said to me, ‘Sorry we didn’t go with your idea, would you still be interested in directing the movie if everything comes to fruition?’ I said ‘Absolutely.’ So everything just serendipitously aligned and they sold the script to DreamWorks then I got the call the next day from Stacey saying ‘We’d love for you to take a look at the script and we’d really like for you to direct this movie if you want to do it.’ I was really excited about doing a kind of throwback movie. For me the great car movies were Bullit, Smokey and the Bandit, Vanishing Point, Grand Prix – the stuff I grew up on. My dad was doing stunts in all those films and I just wanted to bring it back - no CG, all in camera, and haul ass with cars.
I GOT A GLIMPSE INTO [SCOTT’S] WORLD FOR THREE OR FOUR MONTHS, AND IT IS A VERY FUN WORLD.”

Going without CG, how many car models did you use? What scenes took the most takes? SCOTT WAUGH When you do car wrecks, you really have only one take because you’re smoking the car, wrecking it. So all the big wrecks in the movie were, we call them ‘oners’ (1-ners), because you can only do them once. So we put an arsenal of cameras around [the accidents] to make sure we got them from all angles. I’m a car aficionado as well, I love cars, so we wanted to put the array of cars the [Need for Speed] video games have, so you have the classics, you have modern, you have supercars, and you have all the great cop cars chasing us – there’s just a lot of cars! Every vehicle in the movie, even if it was a background car, we were so adamant about every single one. And even cars you hadn’t seen before, like the Jeep that’s in the gas station with the dog; we spent weeks casting that car, because I wanted something bitching to see!
SCOTT WAUGH We’re still fighting… AARON PAUL We’re still fighting over the [Gran Torino]! Because there are two identical Gran Torinos. [DreamWorks] got them, they completely gutted them and gave them a new interior, new paint job, and that’s the original color of that particular time period. SCOTT WAUGH What we did with all the classics, I wanted to keep everything classic. We went back to the pantones of all the paints in those years and really wanted to stay true to the cars, to that time. AARON PAUL But during the shoot, during one of the racing sequences, we crashed one of the Gran Torinos – not on purpose and the other one was okay – but the car was totaled and we only have one left. So we were fighting over two, then it became one. It was actually three people fighting over two: Tanner Foust, who is my double and is incredible, Scotty and myself. SCOTT WAUGH Now everybody wants the Camaro because it was the only car not to get wrecked!
PRIOR TO AUDITIONING FOR THE ROLE OF JULIA, IMOGEN POOTS (28 DAYS LATER) DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!
So with all the cars in the film, Aaron, you probably had a chance to drive a few of them. What cars did you spend the most time in and what was your favorite? AARON PAUL The car I spent the most time in was definitely the Shelby Mustang. It was incredible to drive, I mean that car was insane. My favorite car in the film and definitely my favorite car to drive was the Gran Torino. I just love classic muscle cars – that’s just my thing. Supercars are great, but Scott and I were fighting…

NEED FOR SPEED
Preparation for the movie must have been intense. Did you have any performance driving experience coming into Need For Speed? AARON PAUL I definitely do now. That was the whole thing, when Scott gave me his vision of it, he said, ‘I want to do this all practical, I don’t want any CG,’ and I said ‘Wow, that’s incredible,’ because you just don’t see that anymore. So it got me very excited and he also said, ‘I want you to be doing most of the driving, I don’t want to lie to the audience, I want the audience to know that you are in fact the one who’s driving these vehicles.’ And not just me you know; Dominic was driving, we were all driving. So we had to go through a very intense training period, and it was fantastic.

Scott, the movies you’ve worked on with massive car scenes, there’s Batman Forever er and Speed among others…is there a lot of CG in those films? SCOTT WAUGH No, I come from the era of stunts, by the time I retired, CG wasn’t as huge as it is now. We did everything practically. And there was always the talk of stuntmen going away because CG is going to replace them. And I’m really happy to see that hasn’t happened, that they’re not just going to computer generate Aaron and all of a sudden make him do things that can happen with a computer. I’m glad it’s not happening, obviously I have an affinity for stuntmen, so we still exist! So for those big crash scenes, did you carry over anything from those previous films to this one? SCOTT WAUGH I mean, I brought all my experience, what I’ve seen work, what I’ve seen not work and from my camera angles I wanted to do things that people have never seen before in wrecks. And today’s technology allows you to do that.

We’d look at each other and just start laughing. SCOTT WAUGH We would laugh every day. I was telling Aaron – he was still on Breaking Bad on our first two days of photography. But that first day we’re at basecamp, and it’s kind of one of those ‘oh s#it’ factors - it was one of those, “oh no, what did I do?!’ because we were leaving basecamp and we had 13 supercars, 12 cop cars, three high speed insert cars, two helicopters and the army brigade leaving basecamp and going to film. And I was going ‘Oh my God, what did we do?!’ It was crazy. It was a circus. AARON PAUL It was so ridiculous, but such a fun ride.

How does going from a TV series (Breaking Bad) to a major film change in terms of preparation? AARON PAUL I was so used to being on a show where we shot an episode in eight days, and there’s so much dialogue and so much action. For [Need for Speed]… SCOTT WAUGH He would come on set and we’d be like, ‘OK here are your two lines for the whole day’… AARON PAUL Yeah for the whole day! I mean, there would be two weeks where I wouldn’t say a single word, we’d be driving, just racing! So it was completely different. We never had helicopters on Breaking Bad, so it was very bizarre just jumping into a supercar and being surrounded by other supercars, then being surrounded by helicopters chasing us and filming us. I was a surreal experience – it was a dream come true. I got a glimpse into [Scott’s] world for three or four

t has been roughly four years since I have attended CES and, due to the Polar Vortex storm that hit the Midwest, I decided to drive out to the show with my father so I wouldn’t risk missing a flight due to the weather. After a four-day trek and some quality time with my Dad I finally got my first glimpse of Las Vegas. As I checked into my room at the Excalibur, the casino seemed empty compared to what I had remembered from previous CES shows. I found out later that over 60,000 attendees had been delayed due to the aforementioned weather, thus reaffirming that I had made the right decision to drive. For 2014, CES changed the way the badges

weather, I was ready to hit CES and find out what the future had in store for me in the world of technology. I got off the shuttle at the convention center and once again, it wasn’t as busy as I expected. I walked into the South Hall and quickly realized I wasn’t where I was supposed to be. I was surrounded by robots and TVs instead of mobile electronics. After an hour of walking I finally found the North Hall and the industry that I know and love. My first stop was the RE Audio booth where they had an impressive display of massive woofers hanging from chains and a very cool demo vehicle with a motorized sliding amp

rack. RE seems to be focusing on the days of old with big amps and big power that will make any bass head (like myself) happy. This focus seemed to carry on with a lot of the vendors as I walked the show. MTX was showing its massive new 95 Series subs, Orion had its monsters in a glass box, while Cerwin Vega was showing off the newly-designed Stroker subs and amps. These companies - and many more seem to be embracing the old school designs of massive motor structures and large heat sink amps that can produce thousands of watts. Unlike the old designs, the new subs and amps are much more efficient and can achieve outputs that would previously have been unimaginable. With the first day of the show wrapped up, I was happy with what I saw in regard to the new amps and subs ahead for 2014. The second day of the show, I focused on head units and what new technologies I might look forward to. I began with Pioneer and their new NEX head units (Networked Entertainment eXperience), which is basically a new way to integrate your smartphone with the head unit. Kenwood showed off their new 4G radios

which will give your head unit Internet connectivity using a 4G dongle through Verizon which seems cool, but I am concerned with the monthly cost associated with the service. Sony showed off its NFC-enabled cradle radio which basically allows you to set your phone into the cradle and turn it into a radio display via NFC and Bluetooth. I personally don’t see this being a very popular unit, but only time will tell. Alpine showed off its custom kit for 2007-2014 GM trucks and SUVs that holds the first ever nine-inch head unit display. The

unit seems very cool and raises the question of whether Alpine is going to start encroaching on the dash kit market with all-inone solutions like this. One constant trend amongst the manufacturers is the integration of HDMI into its head units. This has been done mainly for MHL connection with smartphones. I would hate to see these inputs being locked out from third party sources like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. If the manufacturers make the HDMI recognize only the app they provide, then this will be the case. At the end

of the second day I was a little disappointed that I did not see any wireless MirrorLink connectivity from any of the head unit companies, but it looks like they are firstly going to focus on hard-wired connectivity. Perhaps 2015 will be the wireless year. Setting aside the third day for mobile video and integration, as expected there were numerous companies on hand with mobile video, and they all seemed to have the same technology as past years – all except one – which was hidden outside in the parking lot in a tent called the Gold Pavilion. AVtek, the company formerly known as Acura Vision, had an assortment of headrest screens that seemed standard until I came across the motorized screen, which is a game changer. After seeing the demo and the price points, I think these will be huge in 2014. I was also impressed with Metra’s new integration harnesses that have an automatic learning feature. Gone are the days of using the steering wheel buttons to program all of the factory functions. The harness will automatically read what kind of radio and vehicle it’s hooked up to, then program the module accordingly – a feature that will undoubted be welcome by all fellow installers. CES 2014 was a great show. It was something I needed to attend to get back into the rhythm and see what the current (and future) has in store. I saw more than I can put in words here and was shown things that I am legally prevented from sharing. With that being said, 2014 should be an exciting year in the world of mobile audio and video.

The Tokyo Auto Salon 2014 was, at least for me, a great weekend filled with all manners of entertainment and spectacle. Whether you enjoyed it or not came down to how you viewed the weekend or, more specifically, what you were looking for. In my case, as always, this meant going in with an open mind to uncover some of the gems the show was bound to hold. This also meant getting there before anyone else did, so I found myself prowling the halls on the Thursday set up, one night before the floodgates opened to the press and general public. There was a lot to take interest in. Subaru, for example, took a chicken-and-egg approach by releasing the race version of its new WRX NĂźrburgring race car before taking the wraps off the production car in Detroit a few days later. Trust was unveiling its new R35X drift weapon, Liberty Walk was showing off some new machines, including its widebody

458 Italia and R35 and the big wheel brands were showing off a number of new shoes. Rocket Bunny (read Kei Miura) was everywhere – his over-fenders literally dominated the visual presence this year; I counted at least 30 cars wearing his designs. But while Thursday was a good indicator of what to expect, nothing could have prepared me for what was to happen during the rest of the weekend. Friday began as it always has; press being given limited access during the morning with the crazed fans looking to spot some flesh of the female variety flooding the halls later that day. There was plenty to go around I suppose, but I have always wondered what the ratio of gear heads to girl seekers is. Probably heavily tilted towards the latter! One car (actually a pair of them) that really impressed me was from a small company called Kuhl Racing. Their silver Toyota 86 (there were seemingly

more of them this year than last) was an incredible machine. It was not wrapped in vinyl; rather it was painstakingly painted using perfectly positioned strips of tape under layer after layer of glossy coats; a process that took over two months to complete. Underneath there was no less detail, with acres of titanium covering the custom exhaust system. The Prius next to that was, actually, still a Prius, but still very impressive. One look at the interior and you got lost trying to find all the little details. Top Secret brought its A-game this year fielding no less than eight cars, including a brace of R35s and, unusually, a R34 V-Spec II NĂźr and the infamous top speed V12 Supra. Some of you might not know, but Smoky Nagata can never go back to England ever again unless he is pardoned! He has been black listed because of the speeds he drove in that car. Incidentally, this is the last time we will see it at any shows;

it is being retired and now up for sale. Nagata san was over in the North hall with the other RH9 tuners. Interestingly, all the big tuner brands like Phoenix Power, Kansai Service, Endless, Jun and G-Force Garage decided to band together in a show of unity this year. RH9 traditionally applied to nine-second (or under) drag cars, but this year they are changing their outlook and using the RH9 moniker to symbolize tuning at large. Friday ended and Smoky asked me if I would like to join him for dinner – it wasn't an invitation I could refuse! We were led to a private room where Nagata san assembled some of his closest business associates and, over the next couple of hours, all manner of weird and wonderful things happened; including watching a very small Japanese comedian putting disposable underpants on the man himself. Probably a bigger surprise was meeting his daughter who was helping at TAS this year. I didn’t even know he had kids!
Tuning - TAS 16.01.indd 3
The gathering came and went in a blur, but not before I later found myself (at Smoky’s invitation again) on the 50th floor of the APA Hotel drinking with Daijiro Inada and the management of Trust, Neko corporation and Endless. To say that was a surreal experience would be an understatement. I had to pinch myself the next day to make sure I wasn’t actually dreaming, but the drinks and conversation flowed easily. And boy, these guys drink as hard as they drive! As midnight approached, slightly inebriated, I went to take my leave as I had a lot of work still to go through, but Inada san turned and asked why I was leaving. “I have a lot of work to do,” I told him, regrettably. “Hey! This is work!” he shot back. Indeed! Saturday also flew by in a blur of shutter clicks and footsteps, but not before I checked out the selection put together by the Option group. Option magazine’s senior editor had just finished his Kansai Service powered 1,000hp Supra - beautiful in every detail. A bit further over, many “WTF”

moments were had. At first glance, I glossed over it because I have no interest in Volkswagen Beetles, but when I swung around and saw a Silvia badge I stopped in my tracks. With the bonnet popped, my jaw dropped. With a full Silvia chassis underneath, RWD conversion and SR20DET the engine bay, this was a big, unexpected surprise and proof again you can’t judge a book by its cover. Next to the “Bug” was the Bad Quality 180SX – wearing a nicely arranged blue and yellow paint job and Rocket Bunny over-fenders. These cars were all function over form. Speaking of form, it was unbelievable how many cars had Rocket Bunny over-fenders this year. And not just one car; we’re talking at least 10 different chassis, including almost all of the Liberty Walk cars. A lot of people still don’t understand that Kei Miura who owns Rocket Bunny (TRA Kyoto) is the same guy who makes the over-fenders for Liberty Walk; mass produced for him by Trust (GReddy). He’s going to be a very busy man this year. Saturday night brought an even bigger surprise when I was handed an invitation to an exclusive
RH9 party. “Here we go again!” I thought. And what a night that also turned out to be; the room was filled with legends of the tuning industry from all corners of the nation. Incidentally, this was the very first time ever where they could all be found in one room together – a very special experience indeed. And in a carbon copy of Friday, it was back up to the APA Hotel for another round of drinks. I wasn’t even planning to stay for Sunday, thinking that three days was going to be enough time to cover everything, but I was wrong. There was still a ton of legwork to do. This led me out into the arena for some drift action, where Toyo Tires was showcasing its best drivers, including D1 champion Kawabata. Back inside the main halls, I stopped to visit Inoue san and Star Road who were showcasing the new Glow Star wheels; beautiful three-piece forged items produced for them by Work. They looked absolutely amazing on their classic S30Z. Not long after I decided to stop by Trust and take a closer look at the machines when I noticed a familiar face; Canadian Import model, Dannie Riel.

Not quite, but it's a pretty faithful recreation of the FnF Twin Turbo Supra. Take a close look at the hardtop, fog lights, wheels and rear wing and the replica reveals itself.
Photos don’t do the Chinese/ French beauty any justice and she was pulling huge crowds as a guest model for Trust. At one point, I ended up taking her over to meet Smoky Nagata and, as she stood there posing next to the great man without a care in the world, I sensed Nagata’s tenseness. I asked him if everything was okay and he replied, “Doki Doki,” which means his heart was pounding. Oh the irony. Flying 217 mph (350 km/h) in a 1,200 horsepower monster is a walk in the park for him, but standing next to Dannie caused his hard exterior to crack! It was a great end to a truly hectic weekend.
I think I managed three hours of sleep a night between endless chain smoking, photo editing and enough booze to give me a mild case of alcohol poisoning. But that’s what the Tokyo Auto Salon is about, isn’t it? A weekend when you simply can’t sleep because there’s too much to see and do. Yes, the Japanese industry is still experiencing great difficulties in growth, but you don't feel that when you’re amongst it under the lights and hustle bustle. As you’ll see in my column, I have concerns regarding the current state of the industry, but the Tokyo Auto Salon is still the greatest car show in the world. And that gives me firm hope for the future.

DARK DAYS AHEAD? BY ADAM ZILLIN
The 2014 Tokyo Auto Salon has come and gone and I'm deeply troubled by much of what I have seen and heard. From the outside, someone might wonder why I am concerned about anything, seeing as Japan has always been awesome in the aftermarket world, but it (and specifically aftermarket tuning) is not doing well despite the recent upturn in sales due to a leveled currency. It goes further than hybrid cars and eco-minded corporate ideology. It's much worse than that. Think about it. Tuners are at the mercy of the manufacturers. The suppliers are at the mercy of the tuners. Consumers like you and I are at the mercy of the suppliers and retailers, and we are all at the mercy of the bottom line. Such is the circle of life. If the manufacturers don't produce cars a true performance enthusiast will want to own, the tuners have absolutely nothing to work with. If the tuners
have nothing to work with, then we get a very limited selection of products to choose from. This explains why, for the second year in a row, we've seen massive amounts of R35s and 86s at TAS. There's simply nothing else to work with. It also explains why there is a huge increase in European rides at the show. This year, their presence was easily 50% greater than last year. Why? Because the Germans are making things people want, not what they need. The Japanese manufacturers don't get it; they want to make appliances. I stuff my food in the fridge and don't even think about it afterwards unless I'm hungry. I throw my dirty clothes in the washing machine, push a button and walk away. Japanese manufacturers think this is what people want. They're wrong on so many levels and they've forgotten people like us. Well, maybe one of them still cares about the true enthusiast, but its main rival

CREATING EMOTIONS Designed by Robert Zeff exclusively for ARC Audio
THE DEBUT OF THE NEWEST GENERATION OF XDI AMPLIFIERS IS A TESTAMENT TO THE OUT OF THE BOX THINKING IT TAKES TO CREATE THE NEXT “BIG THING” IN CAR AUDIO. The concept of having raw power, reliable performance and sonic purity combined into a single affordable amplifier design for many was a only seen as a dream. Well it’s time to make that become to reality. With a simple and yet creative concept of designing a new full range digital amplifier line ARC Audio has taken a technical and creative direction to innovating a new approach to “Quality” and “Hi-End” without any of the compromises found in today’s full range digital amplifier designs.

decided to remain ignorant to the future and has only recently come out of a self-induced coma. It's almost too late. With the R35 and 86, Nissan and Toyota gained some momentum, but the R35 is already seven years old, the 86 just turned two, and the NSX and Beat are still two years away. The Japanese manufacturers are wrapped tighter than a mummy in corporate red tape, and that is slowly strangling the aftermarket industry – not only in Japan but the countries it supplies. They need David Blaine to get themselves out of this straight jacket before the timer reaches zero. There's still time, but if the manufacturers don't move their asses and start delivering cars we want, everything we know about the aftermarket industry will cease to exist. I'll go even further than that - I give the aftermarket industry 10 years in its current form before it starts to slip into a coma. If you're alarmed, think about how the guys who cover, supply, promote, endorse, shoot, produce and sell are feeling. All of us are entrenched, along with many friends and associates in related industries, so we will all suffer.
"The fact Nissan appointed Tamura san on the R35 project was a major move. He was a street racer. He was part of the Mid Night Club."
Despite these warning signs, I'm keeping the faith. Japanese manufacturers must change course or we are all in big trouble. The fact Nissan appointed Tamura san on the R35 project was a major move. He was a street racer. He was part of the Mid Night Club. I was absolutely overjoyed he was appointed to oversee the project because he's a true gearhead. He's a real driver; the purest of enthusiasts with the power to make change. Let's see what 2014 holds for all of us. Perhaps I'm a hopeless romantic, but I'm trying to remain optimistic. This year might be more of the same, but the IDx project looks promising. What we all want though, is a new Supra, Z and a new Silvia. Hey, Nissan and Toyota: make these cars already and do it yesterday. The world needs them.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
HOW A VI SION OF SEMA SUP REMACY BECAME REALI T Y STORY BY JORDAN LENSSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSHUA SWEENEY
Salik Zaki’s journey to the top of the Tuner Battlegrounds Competition has been nothing short of determined. Entering into the first-ever Tuner Battlegrounds competition, the kid from Boston was about to embark on a yearlong competition against the top 64 tuner cars from throughout North America with dreams of going big. His Scion xA is a definite break from the ordinary. The initial offering from Toyota's new youth-oriented brand was awkward at best: tall, frail, with shades of the micro minivans spawned in the early ‘90s. It almost goes without saying that within the tuning community the xA was completely ignored. But when Zaki's grandfather, an avid car enthusiast himself, bought the car as a graduation gift for him in 2004, it was nearly impossible to pass up. As a kid he idolized his cousins' tuned, PS Oneequipped Civics, and recognizing the potential he had with such a
unique platform, he set out to build something that would stand out from all the rest. “That’s one of the major reasons why I decided to start the build on the car years ago,” Zaki said. “Nobody really would consider taking such an ugly looking stock car and turning it into a pretty awesome show car.” He started with some minor modifications. When he left his hometown of New Hartford, New York to attend Boston College, he brought the sticker-bombed, lowered xA with him. For most kids, school means taking a step back from costly projects and car builds, but the move introduced him to an entirely new world that was too hard to resist. He started attending car shows in the area, and the mods were enough to catch the attention of David Medina, Club President of TeamECR. After a few months of scouting, he proposed some mods to push the car to the next level and
asked Zaki if he would join the team. Recognizing his visual game needed the most attention, Zaki visited FCR Inc. in Weymouth, Massachusetts for paint and bodywork. Led by Tony DelGallo, FCR transformed the xA from meek and mild to show floor-ready, complete with a new body kit and four-tone paint scheme that riffed on the original color, using the factory red, with a silver lower body and black roof and hood. The colors were divided using gold flake accents. When it was done, Zaki finally had a car that looked the part. The response he received was far greater than he expected. Scion USA approached him to use the xA at marketing events throughout the area. It brought Zaki a new level of recognition, but it was short lived after a member of a rival Boston car club criticized the car’s lack of substance. The incident made Zaki realize he wanted – and needed – to call on his crew and build something nobody had seen.

“I didn’t care what it took. [The next day] we started to redesign the whole car; threw the bodykit out, got a new 10-piece body kit, scrapped all the paint, pulled the engine out, redid the door jambs, and came up with this whole Tiffany blue and pearl white color.” The scheme wasn't necessarily planned, but when Zaki was thinking of paint, he knew he wanted something crazy. Originally he was thinking mint green, but when he arrived at FCR, Lead Painter Danny had a PPG turquoise and House of Kolor blue ice flake that was straight old-school. For accents, anything carbon fiber was decidedly too dark, so FCR came up with a special one-off pearlescent white accent that is so secret, Zaki himself doesn't even know what it is. His car is the only one to receive this unique treatment, and let's just say photography doesn’t do it justice. “[The color] speaks to a wide variety of people,” Zaki said. “It speaks to the old school car guys who had custom hot rods that color, it speaks to people in their 20s and 30s who are looking for a different color, and it also speaks to a lot of females. Women love that color. A lot of girls think it’s cute, so one of the stickers I had on the car last season literally said, “That’s cute.”
TUNING
When the car was complete, Zaki made his mark by taking 'Outstanding Paint' honors at its debut show at World of Wheels the very next day. He then followed that up with 'Best in Show' at Hot Import Nights. Suddenly, the xA that was being overlooked by the competition was getting national recognition. As many readers know, networking is key to success in any area of business, but perhaps none moreso than in the auto and tuning industries. With the hard work of his team and various installers, Zaki built a reputation and a Rolodex with some of the industry's most talented names. Knowing that sponsorship is vital for long-term success, he met Jeff Maldonado of 742 Marketing in California, a company that sets up SEMA-quality car owners with sponsorship and marketing opportunities. From that connection, the two pledged to "Do Work Son," a slogan that would eventually play a vital role in Zaki's future TBG success. But as his almost-10-year-old project was on a steady incline, Zaki's grandfather passed right before the Tuner Battlegrounds competition. From this point forward, the car became more than just a labor of love. Now it was a representation of his family, his support and the dream of making it to SEMA.
“Yeah we’ve made it to a certain point, but we’re not just focused on getting to the next level as much as we are about getting everybody involved to the next level.” – Salik Zaki

TUNING “My grandfather was really into cars. He was always asking me how the shows were going, asking me how the build was going, and when he passed away right before Tuner Battlegrounds, it became like a commemoration. So when we were building the car for SEMA, I looked up for my grandfather since his dream for me was to be bigger in the scene. We weren't just building the car for me, it was also for my grandfather.” When the Tuner Battlegrounds competition officially began in November 2012, Zaki's Scion was more than holding its own. What began with 382 competitors (287 imports, 47 domestics, 47 Euros and one exotic), was whittled down by PASMAG Facebook followers to the last 64, where Zaki's xA handily beat Brian Requena's '96 Civic hatch. In the Top 32, he was up against the neatly-packed G35 of John Butiu and, once again, Facebook fans voted in strong support of the xA. But it was during the Top 16 where Zaki really felt the support of the TBG community when he beat out David Whitehead's custom copper RSX by 245 votes (2,005 to 1,760). All that stood in the way of a SEMA showdown was Samuel Piazza's menacing Camaro in the Top 8. It was just less than a month before TBG finale at SEMA when Zaki found out he was voted into the Top Four against Luigi Arroyo's S2000, Frank Daniel's Chevy Camaro, and Tyler Pflanz's blacked-out Supra. It was a match of performance versus audio, and import versus domestic. The tuner gods couldn't have created a better match-up.
Zaki's SEMA vision was set to be realized, but before anything, he wanted to make sure he had his bases covered. He went to Hi End Customs in Malden, Massachusetts for its first major audio overhaul. Owner Alex Balurdi was tasked with stripping the guts of the interior and filling it with high quality components that pushed some ear-pounding SPL. While FCR was installing the suede liners and paintmatched trim, Balurdi was putting together a package of gauges, ORACLE LED lighting, wiring, TKO Audio visor monitors, a long list of Memphis Car Audio electronics and even a custom subwoofer enclosure, eyeball-measured and fitted like a glove. “I let him come up with the whole enclosure and back seat build,” Zaki said. “I took the back seat out, and let him do his own thing, I trusted him enough to come up with the whole template. And the crazy part is he actually did it without having the car.” All said and done, when the xA finally arrived
from FCR, Balurdi was able to build and install everything just two and a half weeks before SEMA. Don't ask how. The car was worked on up to the 11th hour heading into the Tuner Battlegrounds at SEMA. As part of his new package, Zaki opted for a set of paint-matched custom forged Niche Vector N370s. The only problem was the custom turquoise couldn't be matched at Niche, so just days before the showdown they shipped the wheels to FCR in three pieces, which were painted, shipped back to Niche for assembly, then back to FCR for the install. But with two days left, a leak in the wheel meant they had to go back to Niche for repair, while the xA was loaded onto the trailer and headed to Vegas on three new tires and a replacement. If that wasn't enough of a stressor, while Zaki's xA was en route to Vegas his front bumper suffered a near-catastrophic disaster, nearly being ripped in half and pulled off the car on the trailer. With luck on Zaki's side, Sudden Impact

For most kids, school means taking a step back from costly projects and car builds, but the move introduced him to an entirely new world that was too hard to resist.
Customs (another Boston area shop who installed his Air Lift air ride) was on site to tape and paint their way past the $3,000 worth of damage. His Niche wheels arrived just in time, and when the doors opened, the effects of SEMA took full force. Thankfully, he had one of the biggest crews supporting him. Made up of nearly 15 people including installers, builders, detailers and his friends from back home, Zaki made use of all his resources to put together the strongest campaign possible. For the final two rounds of the Tuner Battlegrounds, votes were determined by a 'text to vote' and 'call to vote' system, which meant Zaki and his team had to switch their approach to garner support. “We went to the [SEMA] show almost three hours before everyone else all four days,” Zaki said. “We started promoting, we were telling people to call from their cell phones and text right when the voting was opened. When we were out at the nightclub, we were having a good time, but we were actually getting people to vote for the car. I didn't want to look at it like a vacation, we were there to win it.” When the votes were tallied, it came down to Pflanz’s Supra and Zaki’s Scion xA – performance versus sound. In the end, Zaki took the Tuner Battlegrounds crown with overwhelming support and the most worldwide votes of any competitor throughout the competition. That once-bone stock xA – his first car and gift from his grandfather – now sat atop the podium as the mostvoted car in North American tuning circles. All the

hard work, all the dedication and all the weight was now off Zaki and his supporters’ shoulders. “You have no idea [how intense it was],” he said. “It was a situation where I didn’t even walk around the show until I found out that I won the contest. I couldn’t do it I was so nervous.” And while the TBG success is a great story for him and his Scion, perhaps the even greater victory is the one shared by those who helped him along the way. “I think that speaks to just who we are, what we’re all about,” Zaki said. “TeamECR is about being different. Sure we collect trophies and prize money, but we make sure we’re involved in the community and community events. Yeah we’ve made it to a certain point, but we’re not just focused on getting to the next level as much as we are about getting everybody involved to the next level.” TeamECR was there to help get him and his car ready for the show when he couldn’t be there. Hi End Customs is now busier than ever and now works together with FCR on joint body and audio projects, and Zaki is now working with 742 Marketing to expand its operations to the East Coast to help upcoming builders and tuners reach that next level. Even his detailer, Lia "SupahScion" launched her career after showing her best work at SEMA. So while he might be stepping away from any work on the xA in the near future, he and his Boston family will be working hard to make the dreams of the next generation come true. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll hear something in the future about the FR-S he just bought, too.

STEPHAN PAPADAKIS' 8-SECOND CIVIC
STORY BY ERIC EIKENBERRY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW BOHAN & PAPADAKIS RACING
We pause our amazing, regularly-scheduled automotive parade for a momentary look into the past; back to a time before the Internet, before the dawn of cellular telephones, before email, before aftermarket parts were only a mouse click away. We felt a need lately to investigate the dawn of the import car craze, to locate and interrogate figures who've been there, done that, and set achievements so high they're still talked about today. Not the people merely in the scene; the people who created the scene; the Legends. We've audaciously planned to catch up with some of the legends of the sport compact tuning scene – people who have reshaped the industry with their vision and drive – to share their story. To this end, we've tracked down Stephan Papadakis, our first feature in an esteemed list of legends. Although he's most recently been spotted driving a K20-swapped 1989 CRX at NASA Honda Challenge events, savvy folks will be quick to recognize him as the owner and proprietor of Papadakis Racing, and probably know him best as the manager of Formula Drift star Frederic Aasbo's turbocharged rear wheel-drive Hankook Tire Scion tC team. Before that, in 2007 and 2008, he was the builder of two-time Formula Drift Champion Tanner Foust's Nissan
350Z. He also built the truly insane, 800-horsepower Toyota NASCAR-engined rear wheeldrive Rockstar Scion tC, which Foust piloted in 2009 and 2010. He even spent time behind the wheel at Irwindale's “House of Drift” as the driver of the AEM Honda S2000 drift car. Born in New York but thoroughly converted to a SoCal surf and snowboarding enthusiast with a house in Redondo Beach and a race shop in Hawthorne, he's been in the import car scene long before Honda Civics were threatening to break out of the 10-second bracket. We snagged him and peppered him with questions about how his automotive obsession began, what it's been like, and his advice for youngsters in the biz.

PASMAG: When did you first realize you wanted to work with automobiles? SP: From the age of 10, I was playing with RC cars. Around 13 I got quite serious about off-road RC and wanted to race them professionally. Here in California we had a few pro RC racers at the time that I raced with. When I turned 16 and got my first car, I realized that real cars could be modified and were more fun than the scale versions. My focus turned to my Honda Civic.
PASMAG: What RC cars did you have? SP: I started with a Tamiya Frog when I was quite young, maybe 11. I had to assemble it. Soon after, I switched to an Associated RC10 – way better. Over the years I had Losi trucks, Associated
Tuning_Papadakis_16.01.indd 2
trucks, RC10 road chassis with the T-bar suspension and others I have forgotten.
PASMAG: What was your first project vehicle? SP: I was fortunate that my Grandmother bought me a two-year old 1991 Civic Si in ’93 when I turned 16. She and my mom thought it was a good, safe, economical car. PASMAG: The 90's are regarded as the heyday of the import car craze, but at that time did you feel you were engaged in something trend-setting? SP: Everything to do with real cars was new to me. At that time there were a few local shops, many modified cars on the street and several friends who regularly attended the street races. To me

the trend was already evolved. I was just the new kid getting into it. It was not until I graduated high school and really focused on racing and working in the scene that I realized that the industry was growing and centered in L.A.
PASMAG: Today, it seems like almost every possible swap and conversion has been already mapped out, but what was it like then, not knowing where to turn for accurate information or properly fitted parts? SP: Back in the '90s everyone was working to build the fastest and most unique engine conversions but without any instructions. Few were good at this: Myles Boutista from Revhard and Charles Madrid from Pit Crew Motorsports were blazing the engine swap trail at their respective shops. They had

ONE some of the first Integra and Prelude engine conversions in Civics and CRXs around ’93 and before. At that time many shops were attempting swaps but often customer’s cars were left unfinished due to a lack of knowledge. We had a small group of good mechanics in L.A. that people from all over California, Arizona and Nevada would travel to for their engine swaps. Turbo Magazine would often do editorials on these engineswapped cars. This would be the main exposure for the good shops and mechanics. My shop was called Honda Pro located in Santa Ana, California.
it changed much or has it remained the same? SP: We still have a close relationship with our sponsors and use their products on our race cars. Even at huge companies like Hankook Tires and Scion, the marketing guys and girls are passionate about the automotive aftermarket. We have worked with AEM Electronics, ACT Clutch, Motegi Wheels and SPC Performance for over 10 years – ever since our drag racing years. What has remained the same are passionate companies that build quality products. We have a close relationship with these companies and their employees.

PASMAG: If you had to guess at just how much money you've spent over the years what number would you toss out?
SP: Fortunately, the last 10-plus years the money spent is through the race team and I’ve been able to make a living doing this, but from 16 to 22 years old I spent every dollar I made - outside of food - on my cars. I lived at home or a girlfriend’s house so I didn’t need to pay rent. My first job was at JG Engine Dynamics so I could learn more and get better deals on engines. PASMAG: Of the cars you've sold or parted out to build new ones, which one do you miss the most? SP: My most emotional car is first 9-second yellow hatchback Civic which is still intact and mine. The NASCAR V8 Rockstar tC1 drift car is owned by Scion and they store it in their private museum in Torrance, Calfornia. The one

PASMAG: Have you ever had a major falling out with a sponsor after using their product(s)? Give us an idea of what happens when insufficient engineering meets the real world. SP: We pride ourselves in not just using products from sponsors, but also helping development by using them in our race cars. We have had some failures that might have cost us a round or two, but that is part of the job we do – use the parts to the limit and give our feedback so the company’s products can evolve and the whole industry
can benefit. We are the ones with data-logging, a crew of techs to work on the cars, and tangible results to give feedback to these companies' engineers. Customers of these products don’t want to develop parts on their cars. They shouldn’t have to. We do that for them. PASMAG: What would you regard as the high point of your career so far? SP: Of my driving career, it would be racing the IDRC Finals at Pomona, California, partnered with the NHRA; racing the FWD Civic against Adam Saruwatari in his RX-7 and Eddie Bello in his Porsche. It was at the height of import racing at the most iconic drag strip in the world.

PASMAG: Who were your biggest influences? SP: John Concialdi from AEM, Javier Gutierrez from JG Engine Dynamics, Frank Choi from Battle of the Imports. Shaun Carlson from Nuformz. All are innovators in the scene. PASMAG: What's your greatest accomplishment? SP: Turning my hobby into a career and being able to employ a few people along the way. PASMAG: What were your biggest surprises? SP: When the import car scene became the sport compact industry and some auto manufacturers actually built cars that enthusiasts wanted: the Evo, STi, Scion FR-S, etc. And Honda not being the brand anymore.

PASMAG: What is the most important innovation you've seen / used / been part of? SP: When I started going to Battle of the Imports drag races in 1994, everyone thought a 13-second quarter mile was the limit of front wheel drive capability. Our 9-second tube chassis Civic built by Shaun Carlson was the most innovative project I’ve been a part of. It shocked the whole industry with its performance. PASMAG: What impact did the late Shaun Carlson have on your life? SP: I was just a garage mechanic until I met Shaun. He taught me the importance of the details and marketing yourself. He was also a great friend. We shared a shop for a few years, were roommates, and partied together many times. My life wouldn’t be the same without him having been in it. I do remember one time with Shaun, getting ready for the 1999 SEMA show. We were just finishing the yellow hatchback to debut in the Battle of the Imports booth at SEMA. We were working a week straight with very little sleep. The latest time SEMA would let a car enter the Convention Center was Monday

at 6 p.m. After that, they laid down the carpet in the isles. Well, we had worked straight through the night and finally got the car loaded up in Upland, California at Shaun's parents' house, where the car was built. At 2 p.m. on Monday the car was finally loaded in the trailer and started the four-hour drive to Las Vegas. We could have short-cutted [the build] a bit, but Shaun wanted to use every last minute and make the car the best possible. That was his nature. It was hard to keep up with, but that is why he always had the most amazing projects. He would spend the most money and the most time to make sure of it.
PASMAG: If you could start over again, would you do anything differently? SP: No changes…it’s been an epic ride with amazing friends. PASMAG: What advice would you give to a young person who has an interest in building his or her own performance machine? What platform would you consider to be a good start? SP: Modest budget - go with a used Honda from the '90s. I still love CRXs, but the '92 to '95 Civic and '94 and up Integra have the most aftermarket parts - but all these are pretty beat up and rusted if you don’t live in Southern
California. Other than that, just pick a car you connect with. That is the point – it should be an extension of your personality. There you have it, from the 'local kid makes it big, goes fast' category of feel-good inspirational stories, Mr. Papadakis had the first FWD chassis in the eight and nine second range in the history of the world. There will never be another first like that.

A Raspberry PI and MHL can turn your ride into an Internet- enabled machine.
MAKING YOUR CAR SMARTER Nowadays, it would seem that everything is connected to the Internet. Everything that is, except for your car. With the exception of a few manufacturers that are offering HotSpot options and Internet connectivity with the vehicle, most cars lack Internet connectivity. Things are changing, however.
Now, we have all seen and heard of the new and amazing OEM options that are coming from Cadillac, GM and Toyota with their appbased radios and text-to-speech systems. If you're in the market for a new car and you like the look of OEM, then these will be a great option for you. But since you are reading this magazine then a stock system probably isn't going to satisfy your inner techno freak. So what can you do to take your car into the future without the price tag associated with a new car? Well
72

you have options, and once you know what you want your car to do you'll be able to make the right decision. About 10 years ago I saw most of these advances coming and have been installing and developing these types of systems ever since. I first started by doing full-blown PCs in cars using Micro ATX motherboards and custom auto power supplies. This was a very cool option back then, but the PC was the size of an amplifier and the USB runs to the front of the car would sometimes prove problematic with certain peripherals. Every year the motherboards seem to get smaller and new advances in 4G and Bluetooth made incorporating PCs in a car easier. The benefits were amazing! Beyond having GPS, we could run engine management programs, Netflix, email and surf the web. So, what are your options, and how do you decide? Well, you can use your Android-based Smartphone MHL (mobile high definition link) with a compatible head unit or you can use a small Linux-based PC like the Raspberry PI. How to choose is quite simple. The main limitation you will have with your phone is the storage space and the inability to run peripherals, so if your goal is to have a media center, then the Smartphone is not going to be the best option. If your goal is to access social media, email and Internet-based items with ease, then your Smartphone is a perfect choice. MHL connection is an option provided by almost all the big names in head units like Pioneer, Kenwood and JVC, and it really only requires two things: the head unit must have an HDMI input for MHL and your phone must be MHL-capable, which means the display of your phone can be mirrored on your head unit. The head unit manufacturer will have an app that you download to your phone and, once you have it plugged in, you just start the app and your phone becomes an easy-to-use interface on your radio. Most of you will quickly realize that the apps

provided are very limited and not as satisfying as you would have hoped for. This is largely due to the fact you shouldn't be reading Facebook while driving, so the apps provided are trying to stay within the legal limits of what a driver should have access to. The problem with that is we don't like limits – we want full control and functionality! This can be done, but understand that you will need to void your warranty on your phone, and using your device while driving is illegal and very dangerous. With that out of the way, the first thing you will need to do is root your phone, which will give you increased user access. You can find how to do this with a simple Google search: How to root (phone make and model) and following the steps. All phones are different, so be sure to use the correct method for your phone. Once you root your phone the warranty is void, so do this at your own risk. Once your Android phone is rooted you will download an app from the Play Store called ARliberator. This app is not free so be sure you have read all of the requirements and ensure your phone is rooted before purchasing. Once you have ARliberator on your phone plug the phone into the head unit using whichever MHL connection is required, and then start the app. The app will connect through the MHL connection as
74

well as Bluetooth and you will see your phone on your head unit and have full control over every app through the touch screen. Toss the phone into your glove box or center console and enjoy. The Raspberry Pi is an option if you do not have a head unit that has MHL control, or if you want to have a media center in your car. The Raspberry Pi is a Linux-based micro computer with an atom processor. There are two types, which are differentiated as an A and B model. You will want the 'B' model for the extra RAM, which is 512 MB but can be overclocked. The Raspberry Pi is a very simple-to-use little box with a power input, HDMI out, composite out, audio out and two or three USB ports. There is no operating system as the entire thing runs off of an SD card. The community surrounding these little wonders is constantly developing new peripherals and interfaces for them. One of these companies is Mausberry Circuits and they have developed a car start up and shut down power supply for the Raspberry Pi, which makes it perfect for in-car installations. It's very hard to explain everything you can do with the Raspberry because it is so versatile. Refer to the diagram to see how I am using it in my car. I love this setup because I have such a massive library of media at my fingertips, and I can send the video to the rear headrest for the kids while my wife and I enjoy Netflix on the front screen from my phone through MHL. Yes, I have both systems in my car and you can too if your head unit will support it. These are just a couple of ways that you can make your car smarter without the price tag of buying a new one.

urning an obsession into reality is a dream few enthusiasts are able to enjoy. Having been a true performance and custom car fanatic for years, Jim Light has experienced his fair share of American muscle cars in his life. But what happens when you take a performance-driven car enthusiast and introduce him to one of the most well-known and off-kilter custom installers in the car audio industry? Most people would think a collision of type-A personalities would result in something the local authorities would have to deal with, but who would have ever thought it was a match made in heaven? For most car audio nuts, chances are you have seen and heard of the crazy antics of David Riveria, aka "Fishman," and the outlandish, yet creative installations he has been doing for manufacturers and customers alike. Many of us have watched Fishman evolve his extremely unique and yet creative one-off talents over the years, creating some of the most elaborately engineered, crazy and detailed car audio masterpieces around. So hearing of the Light/Fishman duo left many of us excited of the results of this combined endeavor. After handing his 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 over to Fishman Customs in Fresno, California for what was supposed to be a mod-
est upgrade to the factory Shaker 1000 audio system, the two began to brainstorm ideas for the install. For those of us who have followed Fishman throughout his career, we all know the term modest does not apply. With that said, the two began to brainstorm when Light suggested,"Wouldn't it be nice to build this into a SEMA vehicle?" With the idea in hand, Fishman placed a call to his close friends at ARC Audio in Modesto, California and a visit to their facility, the deal was done for SEMA. The rest is history. For anyone who has been to the SEMA show in Las Vegas, the entirety of the Las Vegas Convention Center turns into an auto enthusiast’s playground for four days, custom vehicles and manufacturers showing off their latest and greatest products for all makes and models. After psyching himself up to prepare for the creation of a SEMA-worthy vehicle, Light immediately went to work on the performance and appearance ends of this transformation. Starting with the exterior, Light carbon fiber hydro-dipped the factory Shelby upper and lower grill inserts, rear diffuser, license plate frame and Shelby rear spoiler to match the Shelby Super Snake full carbon fiber front splitter. Thinking ahead to the modest performance upgrades, a BMC Extreme Customs carbon fiber Mongoose hood with FRP Customs hood

hinge kit were installed to match the theme and increase clearance for the new additions to Shelby's 5.8L powerplant. For the final touches, Light chose a staggered wheel configuration that utilizes SVT Performance forged wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Super G tires. Because it’s a Shelby, the GT500 already comes with track-worthy suspension, braking and power from the factory, but leaving it with a stock set-up just wasn’t an option. Turning his attention to the suspension first, Light carefully selected a Whiteline Racing adjustable pan hard bar, and single stage Megan Racing Street Series adjustable coilovers to lower the GT500's stance and improve its handling. To bump the performance of the Shelby, the factory supercharger, throttle body and intake were removed and replaced with a Kenny Bell 3.6LC (liquid cooled) billet twin screw supercharger kit including a Kenny Bell Mammoth intake, 168 mm billet manifold, dual boost pump and custom Kenny Bell engine management program. The upgrades now enable this beast to produce 850 hp and 820 lb-ft of torque. Putting the final touches on the engine bay, Light incorporated a plethora of off-the-shelf and custom-made aluminum accents. Among them is a Project 321 cap set and carbon-accented coilovers branded with the GT500 logo. Shelby battery and reservoir covers and a host of custom aluminum parts, including a radiator overflow tank, intercooler reservoir and brake master cylinder reservoir cover (among others), match nicely with the carbon fiber hydro dipped radiator cover and cowl panel found within. Since this is a demo project to showcase a new line of car audio products, the audio

system and interior components were due for a facelift. Starting at the source, Fishman moved the factory radio back five inches, retaining all of the factory interface and control options. As the original iPad vehicle integration innovator, Fishman used a NAV-TV ALLSYNC interface and incorporated a fully motorized and one-of-akind iPad mini-mount and display for the Shelby. With the push of a button, the mount opens on one side for easy iPad removal and effortless re-installation of the full audio, charging and OEM control interface options from the factory deck. Using the iPad application manager and connectivity capabilities, it was then interfaced
with a Viper Alarm system, Escort 9600ci laser shifter radar detector and vehicle engine performance telemetry. To set the audio stage, Fishman consulted ARC Audio's design team and, based on design and application recommendations, he first covered the entire interior with multiple layers of Dynamat Extreme and Dynamat Dynaliner sound deadening. With strategic application the car was build to be quiet and rattle-free while addressing some of the factory sonic and acoustical issues. The front doors were completely rebuilt with a dual chamber aperiodic membrane enclosure for the dual ARC Audio XDi 6.5-inch midbass drivers in the lower portion of the door. Then, using a multi-layer decoupling mounting design, a single 5.25-inch XDi 5.2 mid range was mounted in the upper portion of the door to improve stage height and imaging without the need of large custom A-pillars. The doors were finished with hand-made aluminum trims, factory-matched interior materials and a handmade, acrylic ARC Audio logo brilliantly lit with StreetGlow lighting. For the highs, the factory A-pillars were removed and dual ARC Audio XDi 1.0 tweeters were mounted, firing across the car and off axis to help with stage height and width. For the bottom end of the system, a custom rear seat delete made room for a dual-chamber sealed enclosure built to spec for two ARC Audio XDi Dual two ohm subwoofers. Extending from the bottom of the sub enclosure, a new home was made for the two ARC Audio XDi amplifiers. In this case an ARC Audio XDi1200.6 six-channel amp was chosen to produce 150 watts to each of the different speaker bands and an XDi 1100.1 full range amplifier to give the subs up to 1,100 watts of power for late-night jam ses-

On the back of the main cabin, Fishman made an all-aluminum and acrylic subwoofer grill sporting the GT500 logo and back lit it with more Streetglow blue LEDs, matching the rest of the interior and trunk panels. Bringing the audio system together, an ARC Audio PS8 DSP was installed in a motorized access panel in the trunk and connected with Tsunami TSPEC and Install Bay from Metra power and signal wiring for nearly unlimited fine tuning, helping create the live concert sound Jim was looking for. In keeping with the overall theme, hand-made acrylic and aluminum Shelby Cobra snakes are backlit with more StreetGlow lighting to create an almost seamless look for every compartment of the car. To finish it off, the entire trunk received joint-fitted handmade panels wrapped with matching OEM-style materials After hundreds of hours of detailed solo work on the interior and audio system, and with the final loving touches from yours truly on the ARC Audio PS8, Light's Shelby made it to SEMA and received a standing ovation. Taking a new direction in style and concept, Fishman teamed up with Light and ARC Audio, and has once again outdone himself, proving he is still on the leading edge of creativity and audio technology.

PASMAG was in attendance at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, and boy did we see a lot of cool products. The technology was top notch and, as always, there were plenty of amazing demo vehicles on display. While roaming the show floor searching for a new twist in car audio, we noticed a new trend. Head units now incorporate HDMI connections – next generation navigation and vehicle connectivity that will make car audio integration a smooth process for consumers looking for alternative connections moving forward. Yes, HDMI is finally here for car audio – hallelujah! HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface in laymen’s terms) is an all-in-one solution for the transfer of audio and video signals - in other words, a digital replacement for your existing analog video connections. Installers love these types of connections, which allow for a clean installation using fewer, less cumbersome cables. In addition, there is HDMI/MHL (Mobile High Definition Link). Think of MHL as a way to take a Micro USB connection and make it HD friendly, with a few added features. HDMI/MHL-enabled head units allow users to mirror their smartphone with their head unit display. This may seem like a small step for the head unit manufacturers, nonetheless, the industry is very excited about a universal connection. In years past, manufacturers made proprietary DIN cables that were not universal, so we are more than happy to see the industry meet customer demand by keeping things simple. You can
Why lose factory features for a better head unit when you don’t have to? easily shop for a great head unit that uses HDMI technology manufactured by companies such as Kenwood, Dual/ Axxera, JVC, Pioneer, Clarion, and Sony. One booth that caught our attention was Pioneer, which was showing its high-end navigation head units called NEX (Networked Entertainment eXperience). Five head units were announced for its AVIC lineup. All of these navigation-based head units utilize Android and Apple technology for seamless integration with users’ smartphones. Using an AVIC Sync Networked NaviAfter gation, you will always be up to date with the latest mapping, traffic alerts, gas stations and more, to make your travel more enjoyable and worry free. Several manufacturers utilize the Mirror Link capabilities of smartphones and their head units for seamless navigation, as mentioned above with HDMI. As a result, the trend is now moving towards better graphics and user-friendly decks. Vehicle connectivity has taken on a whole new meaning for 2014. Consumers demand more than simply making phones work with their head units. Today’s buyers want to see vehicle diagnostics, Wi-Fi and much more. Last September, Automotive Data Solutions (ADS) introduced the iDatalink Maestro MUS1, which is a dash kit for the Ford Mustang 2010-2014. This kit allows the vehicle’s owner to retain factory infotainment system features such as Bluetooth, USB, satellite, and steering wheel controls when installing an iDatalink-compatible radio such as Kenwood and/ or Pioneer. Why lose factory features for a better head unit when you don’t have to? Furthermore, several Kenwood eXcelon head units even communicate and display on-board features such as the vehicles gauges, climate control, parking and other vehicle information. As consumers, we want the coolest products at reasonable prices. Modern technology and more affordable manufacturing procedures have made this a reality. As we saw at this year’s CES, connectivity, navigation, and exciting new vehicle features are fastforwarding our vehicles into the future. Consumers can easily pick a product to fit their budgets and demands for head-unit enjoyment for years to come. Go visit your local retailer and check out some of these innovative products today!

ssume for a moment you have a history of building cars with amazing audio systems. What if your resume included 10 IASCA Expert Class Championships and the highest scoring auto sound competition vehicle of all time, in any format? And let’s say that vehicle graced the cover of PASMAG's Dec/Jan 2012 issue. That’s quite the reputation, but it’s one that Scott Buwalda of Cumming, Georgia can lay claim to. Having purchased a new vehicle, the time had come to embark on another build – his third in three years – and grace the pages of PASMAG.

Extensive bolt-on mods include every platform-specific part for the 535xi from the Burger Tuning catalog. Custom Performance Engineering (cp-e) Cooling Mist methanol injection and a four-inch custom stainless exhaust result in a significant bump in power – enough to regularly thrill Buwalda and passengers in low 11-second passes on the quarter mile.

subwoofers vent into the interior through the ski pass-through between the rear seats. Hybrid Audio Technologies offers a unique solution for high frequency reproduction – its L3SE mid-range/wide bandwidth drivers offer impressive high frequency sound reproduction that eliminates the need for a dedicated tweeter. A set of these, with their mounting flanges machined off, are installed at the top of each door with the angles having been carefully adjusted for maximum highfrequency reproduction. For mid bass, the Salon crew brazenly opened up the stock under-seat woofer location to the exterior of the vehicle with a six-inch hole saw. A speaker grill covered in a weatherproof and breathable Gore-Tex material keeps water out, but lets the 8.85-inch L8SE drivers breathe to the outside of the car for extended low frequency
output. The eights are protected by custom extruded metal grilles beneath the front seats. The Xtant X603s are three-channel amps, but the front channels are bridged to provide 300 watts into the L8SE mid-bass while the rear channel provides 150 watts to the L3SE midranges. One amp is dedicated to each side of the car, vertically bi-amplified for infinite stereo separation. The amps are staggered on a three-level amp rack, lit tastefully with white LED strips, and protected by half-inch tempered glass, all of which are protected by a custom trunk mat with an embroidered BMW logo. Having plenty of power means you have a lot of room for dynamics. The bottom line it's always clean and plenty loud! If you step back and look at the BMW, the countless hours of work done to the car aren’t readily apparent unless you have

ATTACK, DOMINATE, REPEAT THE FASTEST KID ON THE PLAYGROUND STORY BY MICKY SLINGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE BOLDT
W
When you were a kid, you wanted to be the fastest runner on the playground. You and your sneakers took on all newcomers to prove you were the quickest in your grade. When you had worn your trusty shoes down to the soles, it was time for another lighter and faster pair to take on the competition. Daniel Kowall does not race on the playground, but if he did, you better bet he would be the fastest out there and have the nicest shoes, too. “I was always into modding BMWs since I could drive,” says Kowall. “My first car was a 1995 525i, automatic, ‘riced-out’ with a body kit, lowering springs and wheels.” This first pair of sneakers, if you will, had Kowall hooked on the feeling of owning a performance car and modifying it. Feeling the drag of the automatic transmission and seeking more cylinders and more power, it wasn’t long before he decided an upgrade was in order. “The second car was a 1999 BMW 540i, six-speed, which I drove to school in Ontario,” recalls Kowall. Instead of 2.5 liters, Kowall had 4.4

and 93 more horses, but it didn’t stop there. With a newer 5 Series to get him there, Kowall's travels to school helped the hook of car modding dig deeper. “I was in an automotive business program where I was surrounded by car enthusiasts everyday, which further pushed the mod bug,” he says. By the time Kowall was ready to let go and sell his 540i, it had a full custom re-spray in aspen silver with a gloss black roof, a molded Hamann full body kit, M5 style bumper and mirrors, coilovers, new wheels, and a performance exhaust and intake. The V8 E39 not only got Kowall addicted to performance modding his vehicles, it also instilled a new love: autocross. “I started

autocrossing every summer in the 540i, which made me realize I loved driving and needed a more track focused car,” he says. Kowall went a different path with his next vehicle choice though. He strayed from the 5 Series platform he had become all so familiar with and chose to downsize – in chassis, not performance. Kowall chose a 2002 BMW M3, or E46 M3, which is arguably one of the best driving platforms ever. “I was getting more and more into autocross, lapping, time attacks, and togue,” Kowall explains. “So, I went with the E46 M3, which is a far more capable platform for these events.” Kowall found the car on a forum in Long Island, New York and knew it was the one. He strayed from the 5 Series platform he had become all so familiar with and chose to downsize – in chassis, not performance.” the seller was contacted, they worked out a price, and he brought it back to Ontario. Once it was home, in true gear head fashion, he took it right to the track. “I got it aligned and corner balanced for the track and started doing time attacks around Toronto at Mosport (Canadian Tire Motorsport Park), Cayuga, and Shannonville race tracks,” he says. “I even won 92

a first, second, and third place trophy competing in the CSCS (Canadian Sport Compact Series) time attacks at Cayuga.” Then he racked up a 'Driven To Perform' award in 2010 for best BMW. Not only did Daniel have the passion and know how to compete, he was damn good. Anyone steeped in motorsports and performance cars as much as Kowall is realizes good is only good enough for so long. It wasn’t long before the M3 needed to be even more competitive for his tastes. His wins at Cayuga had fueled his focus for the E46 to be more trackfocused in terms of modifications. “School finished, so I shipped the car back to Calgary and joined the CSCC (Calgary Sports Car Club) and did two seasons of time attacks at Race City and Edmonton,” he recalls. “I realized I needed more power and had time over the long winter to install the Active supercharger kit.”
That's where the fun begins. This supercharged M3 was now ready to blow away anybody and everybody, but Kowall wasn’t done. The Active Autowerke supercharger kit uses an HKS GTS8550 supercharger and blow-off valve. The kit includes timing control which Kowall used to take full advantage of the VANOS system on the S54 engine. Bosch High Capacity injectors splash the fuel in the right amounts to rocket the M3 to time attack records. Air is breathed through a ram air intake, fed to the engine, and expelled down Agency Power headers, where it is fired out the back of a custom header-back exhaust system by Unobtanium welding. A BMW Motorsport fan clutch and OS Giken R3C clutch and flywheel work in unison with a short shifter and double shear selector rod by Auto Solutions to help Daniel get the perfect response and gear shift. The Scion FR-S offers a true sportscar experience at a very affordable price point and is complimented by aggressive styling. For those looking to enhance and tighten up the handling of this coupe, there are a variety of aftermarket options available. One such company is NEO Motorsport, which offers a complete coil-over suspension kit. NEO’s passion and motorsport experience ensures that all of its products are tried, tested and true, both for track use and daily commuting. The following is a step-by-step guide for installing this fully-adjustable (ride height and dampening) suspension system on the FR-S.

REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION
The next step involves removing the factory front suspension. Remove the nuts that secure the front sway bar links using a 17 mm socket. Remove the brake line bracket bolt with a 12 mm socket and pry off the ABS wire clip from the bracket. Remove the two lower strut bolts with a 19 mm socket and wrench. Remove the three bolts on the upper strut tower using a 12mm socket. Wiggle the supsension until it comes off the car.
4
REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION
A similar process is needed to remove the rear factory suspension. Remove the carpet in trunk area as well as the Styrofoam tool tray. Remove the three bolts from the control arm and only loosen the inner control arm. Use a 14 mm socket wrench for the stabilizer link and a 17 mm socket wrench for the shock / lower control arm bolt. Inside the trunk, loosen the two upper shock mounting nuts at the strut tower with a 14 mm socket. Once the suspension pieces are accessible, wiggle them out until they come off the car.

Next, prepare the new suspension for install. Compare the new NEO Motorsport coil-over suspension to the factory units and measure the shock collar to ensure that the spring perch and locking ring distances are even on all shocks.
6
INSTALL COIL-OVERS
Install the new coil-overs in the same fashion that the factory suspension was removed. Insert the top into the strut tower first, then attach the bottom to the suspension mounting points.
NOTE
7
WHEN INSTALLING NEW BOLTS, PULL THEM AS FAR OUT AS POSSIBLE BEFORE TIGHTENING TO AVOID ANY CAMBER ISSUES. A JACK STAND OR FLOOR JACK WILL BE REQUIRED TO RAISE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND REAR SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY IN ORDER TO LINE UP THE BOLT HOLES.
ADJUST RIDE HEIGHT
Once the installation process is complete, the suspension needs to be adjusted. Adjust the ride height with sprocket keys. Each key locks onto a ring on the shock and turns in the opposite direction.

INSTALL WHEELS
Once all adjustments have been made, the wheels can be reinstalled. Place the wheels back on the vehicle and hand-tighten each lug nut. Next, tighten all lug nuts with an air tool (if available).
PROPERLY TORQUE LUG NUTS
Once all wheels are on and the lug nuts are tight, the vehicle can be lowered from the hoist or jack stands. At this stage, the lug nuts should be tightened with a torque wrench.
NOTE
ENSURE THE LUG NUTS ARE TIGHTENED TO THE PROPER PSI MEASUREMENT AS PER FACTORY SPECIFICATIONS. A FULL ALIGNMENT IS NECESSARY WHEN THE SUSPENSION INSTALL IS COMPLETE. BEFORE DRIVING, MAKE SURE TO CHECK FOR WHEEL CLEARANCE. DRIVE FOR A FEW MINUTES WITH WINDOWS DOWN AND LISTEN FOR ANY UNUSUAL NOISES. BE SURE TO TAKE DRIVEWAYS ON AN ANGLE NOW THAT THE VEHICLE IS LOWERED. IF THE VEHICLE IS TOO LOW OR HIGH, MAKE RIDE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT WITH SPROCKET KEYS BY REMOVING THE WHEEL AND FOLLOWING FROM STEP 7.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE Normally, the switch to a coil-over suspension setup for a daily driver is one that comes at the cost of ride comfort. The purpose behind such a swap is solely to fine tune vehicle handling to be as sharp as the driver’s preference. In the case of this FR-S, after a lengthy 186 mile/300 km test drive, the suspension is truly incredible. There is little doubt the engineers at Toyota and Subaru dialed the FR-S factory settings in favor of slight oversteer when the car is driven hard, but like any street car, the dreaded understeer exists. The freshly installed NEO Motorsport kit has virtually eliminated any amount of understeer at the front wheels and tightened up the rear end. Furthermore, the ride height was dropped by two inches, primarily for aesthetic reasons. For days of regular city commuting while dodging potholes and clearing speed bumps, a simple pop of the hood and trunk allow for soft dampening of the shocks. At the track (whether it’s a drag strip or road course), stiffening the dampening to any of the 12 levels ensures the driver receives every bit of road feedback through the steering wheel. Having driven a myriad of performance vehicles in my time (and the FR-S on several occasions), the switch to these coil-overs truly enhances the low center of gravity and sportscar-like feel of this Scion like never before.

2014 FORMULA D PREDICTIONS BY JACOB LEVETON
The 10th season of Formula D culminated in an exciting finish at Irwindale, as Mike Essa fended off charges from Chris Forsberg and Daigo Saito to claim his first championship. Essa became the first driver to rise through the ProAm ranks to the top rung of the Pro standings. As we await the opening event in Long Beach to kick off Formula D’s 11th season, I’m going to take a stab at trying to predict the unpredictable. Here's my forecast for the 2014 season.
MOST LIKELY TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP:
MOST LIKELY TO IMPROVE GREATLY IN 2014:
Amazingly, Forsberg’s second-place finish overall (17.5 points behind Essa), was the fifth time he’s finished in the top three in the final standings. Previously, Forsberg's best finish was third overall in the inaugural season in 2004. He placed second overall in 2007, won the championship in 2009, and finished third in 2011. For the new season, Forsberg’s long-time primary sponsor NOS Energy Drink now has a lesser role in the program. I think the change will be a big motivator for Chris and his team. His win in Texas, a track which no driver in the series had driven previously, shows he can adapt to the unknown and use his raw driving talent to compete at the highest levels of drifting. If a few more judging calls fall his way, I think Forsberg is the odds-on favorite to raise the Formula D championship trophy at the end of the 2014 season.
Moen has quietly enjoyed a lot of success in Formula D, although no one seems to remember it. He has earned three top-eight finishes in just three seasons of FD, with car gremlins ending his weekend more often than not. The 350Z he campaigned for the last two seasons was originally built in 2006 and, although it has been refreshed, it's one of oldest chassis in Formula D. For 2014, Moen has parted ways with his previous team and will be building a brand-new Nissan S14 chassis with a 2JZ engine that will likely push well over 600 hp. Moen will also have the support of Bridges Racing, a team that knows what it takes to get to the winner's circle, claiming the Formula D championship in 2012 and helping Lexus earn the 2013 OEM championship. With this new support, look for Moen to earn a few more top-eight finishes and possibly his first podium in 2014.
CHRIS FORSBERG Forsberg’s long-time primary sponsor NOS Energy Drink now has a lesser role in the program. I think the change will be a big motivator for Chris and his team."

MOST LIKELY TO STRUGGLE IN 2014:
DAI YOSHIHARA
While I never would never count out a driver with Yoshihara's resume, (eight career wins, plus a championship in 2011), I think 2014 might be a difficult year for the Japanese ace. A brand new V8-powered Subaru BRZ chassis, which could be supercharged or turbocharged (yet to be confirmed at press time), is one of several unknowns that make it difficult for me to forecast success for Yoshihara this year. His 2013 season started with a win at Long Beach, but he finished 11th in the championship to tie his worst finish (2009) in a car that was essentially the same chassis he won the 2011 championship with, which was still considered to be competitive. With the change in chassis and powerplant, and with every driver who finished ahead of him staying in the same chassis, it's difficult to see immediate success for Yoshihara in the new car.
CHANGE I’M MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO:
HOMESTEAD SPEEDWAY IN MIAMI
Moving from Palm Beach International Raceway (a track more known for its drag strip than road racing) to Homestead Miami Speedway (a larger NASCAR-quality track) is a simple 120-mile move on paper. However, the move is much, much larger in reality.
Competition - Drift Insider - 16.01.indd 2
Formula D had reached capacity at Palm Beach in just three short years, with many drivers being forced to pit in soft grass that got even softer thanks to near-daily Florida thunderstorms. Homestead is a huge facility with a much larger paved area and covered garage access. It is similar to Texas Motor Speedway, which will provide a much more comfortable environment for teams and sponsors alike.
CHANGE I’M LEAST LOOKING FORWARD TO:
THE PRO2 CLASS
While this class was introduced as a stepping stone between the ProAm ranks and the full Formula D pro circuit, the limited four-stop schedule requires substantially more travel than if a rookie wanted to simply travel on a limited Formula D schedule in their region (Long Beach, Seattle, Texas and Irwindale for west coast drivers, or Atlanta, Florida, New Jersey and Texas for east coast drivers). Additionally, I fear these drivers will be forced to drive at off-peak hours, giving them minimal exposure and media coverage. If drivers aren’t able to get exposure, then sponsorship value is diminished and the benefits of running at this level becomes outweighed by the costs. Hopefully, these issues will be worked out along the way in this inaugural year for the class.

TO B-PILLAR OR NOT TO B-PILLAR?
BY GEORGE DIMITRIADIS | PHOTOGRAPH BY MICHAEL WATSON
To B-pillar or not to B-pillar? That’s the question I’ve been dealing with the last while. It’s the middle of January and freezing cold tonight. It’s -25 degrees Celsius, or -13 Fahrenheit for my American friends. For those who don’t understand - it's cold! There are those who are fortunate enough to live in much warmer climates where sun and milder weather is enjoyed year round. However, for those of us on the short end of the stick who are stuck with Mother Nature’s colder side, we have to suck it up and get to work. You see, with winter comes down time - and an opportunity to build and rebuild. So, back to my original question about the B-pillar. What I’m referring to is whether I should build the wall in my vehicle to the B-Pillar (the door jamb behind the front seats). Currently, my set up is a C-pillar build, which is the wall behind the second row of seats. One would think that a wall of eight 12-inch subwoofers behind the rear seat feeding on over 30,000 watts would be enough. To most people, it is. However, to the diehards that eat, breath and sleep car audio, that’s just not the case. Rebuilding is ingrained in our DNA, whether it is for SPL, SQ or some happy medium in between. For my SQ friends, the need to increase their RTA score (install points) is always there. The same applies to the bassheads who are on a never-ending quest to be louder. For those who rebuild and tear down their old setups only to replace them with bigger, badder and louder ones, it’s a cross to bear every year. My conversations 110

with numerous people over the past few months have usually involved what subwoofers to use, what amplifiers are available, and how many batteries to run. What’s interesting is this conversation is the same regardless of where you are; these never-ending questions plague people everywhere. I like to call it “the million dollar question.” Car audio knows no geographical boundaries or languages. This has been proven time and time again with competitions and car meets worldwide. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend competitions and meets all over the world, from Canada, the U.S., Germany and Greece. The one common element that’s always present is passion, determination and the want for 'more.' Various car audio sanctioning organizations have released their
B
C
rules for 2014 and, in doing so, individuals have begun building and rebuilding for the new season. Work is always on hold until they are released because there is no point building outside of the rules. This year promises to be the biggest yet with more competitions scheduled, and an unprecedented amount of builds occurring as this is written. PASMAG will be your source for event coverage
near and far. We will provide you with photos and all the coverage you could ask for, including those events you wish you could attend but are unable to do so, whether it's due to time constraints or because you’re deep in the middle of your own build. PASMAG will also reintroduce car audio competitor profiles in 2014 to share your builds with other enthusiasts, learn from your peers, and prove that you are not the only one with a one-track mind when it comes to building and competing. It's an opportunity to get up close and personal with competitors and enthusiasts like yourselves, to see the end result of all the tireless hours invested. While writing this piece, there is still that lingering voice in the back of my head, repeating the same words over and over: “B-pillar, B-pillar!” If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is. I’ve come to realize that the only way to make this voice go away is to give it what it wants. That being said, it’s been decided; B-pillar it is! PASMAG will have exclusive coverage documenting this Bpillar build from beginning to end. I look forward to sharing the ins and outs and the hurdles we all face in building the car audio vehicles of our dreams. Like many of you, I have a vision and I plan on seeing it through to the end. I look forward to seeing you at events this year to take part in some demos and talk shop!

Q&A ZODIAC: By nature, I am loving and giving and very creative. My imagination is always running wild! I have strong values and morals which make me a very hard worker. I am also a very honest and likable person which attracts people to me. I'll bend over backwards for the people I care about but at the same time will not take crap from anyone! I love living life to its fullest and always have a smile on my face.
2012 BMW 328I: I absolutely love the car! It rides so smooth and turns corners like butter. I like how I can switch it from comfort mode to sport mode. So if I want to cruise casually or zip through the city, I have options! I love flooring my car and feeling the power! I love the rims on my BMW, it makes it stand out from others on the street. There's nothing I don't love about the car!
GAMING: I am a tomboy in disguise! On the outside I may look like a girly-girl but on the inside I'm a huge tomboy. I love playing video games, sports and anything competitive. Growing up, while most girls were playing with their Barbies, I was stealing my brother's Gameboy and Transformers!
