The streets of Toronto will always be special memories for Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s Christian Lundgaard. The talented driver from Denmark was just a 21-year-old when he drove a nearly flawless race to win the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto in 2023. It was his first career NTT IndyCar Series victory.
The “Great Dane” was so impressed with Toronto during the race weekend that he made a return trip to the city during the offseason to savor his win and enjoy the Canadian metropolis at a more leisurely pace.
“I actually went back later that year as I was travelling home to Europe. I planned to have a long layover in Toronto just to
walk around,” Lundgaard recalled. “I was walking around the track with no walls, and it all looked very different, all the tire marks are there. The markings for the pit box were still there. It was pretty cool.
“I enjoy the city. Unfortunately, I didn’t really get to stay there [following his victory last year] because I had to fly back with [team owner] Bobby Rahal on
Sunday night. But that was also great, because I won the race and got to sleep in my own bed, which is something I don’t think happens very often.”
Lundgaard returns to the streets of Toronto in the No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing intent on backing up his spectacular performance in 2023. It was raining in qualifications and the
competitors were on the Firestone’s grooved rain tires. But as the rain stopped and the track began to dry, Lundgaard and his team devised the strategy to win the pole.
“Honestly it all it all came through the teamwork,” Lundgaard said. “It was a calculated risk because we weren’t quite sure if the track was dry enough to go on slicks early on, so we were, ‘OK, what have we got to lose if we go out on a set of wets at the moment?’ We were the only car to turn a lap on the wets in the Fast Six, but then we were also the last car on slicks.”
By saving the slicks until the track was dry enough to control his car at high speed, Lundgaard won the second pole of his career at 100.217 miles per hour. The following day Lundgaard led 54 laps in the 85-lap contest to defeat Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou by a whopping 11.789 seconds.
“I think Race Day last year we were the most competitive car, we were the dominant car,” Lundgaard explained. “I think we were there the entire weekend. I knew we had a fast car. And the fuel mileage was just so easy [to achieve], so I have to
thank Honda for that. They made this win easy for me, especially on the last stint making sure I got the file mileage.”
Last year’s race was just seven days before Lundgaard turned 22 on July 23. This year’s race at Toronto is just two days before his 23rd birthday. Lundgaard believes he will once again challenge for the victory at Toronto, but his main goal is the series championship.
That journey began with his first IndyCar race in 2021 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. He qualified fourth, and team owners Bobby Rahal, David Letterman and Michael Lanigan all saw something special in the then teenager and signed him for the full season beginning in 2022.
In just a short time, Lundgaard has established himself as one of the top drivers in IndyCar. He was 14th in the final standings in 2022 and eighth in ’23 in a season when he scored his first career pole (also at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course) in May and won from the pole at Toronto for his first career IndyCar victory.
“It’s all about wanting to beat everybody,” Lundgaard said. “It’s very simple for all of us. We all want to be the best and to win. All my entire career, I’ve gone forward, and I’ve moved up the ladder. I gained
“It’s simplevery for all of us. We all want to be the best and to win.”
experience and I learned a lot from Graham Rahal, especially on race pace and race performance. So, it’s pieces of the puzzle that keep coming together.”
What made his victory at Toronto even more special was the dramatic comeback and triumph over adversity for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing – a team that had struggled throughout the first half the 2023 season. Lundgaard delivered with his victory.
“It was fantastic,” Bobby Rahal said. “After the Indy 500, we made changes, and I think we immediately saw the benefit of that, and the performance on the street courses. Of
course, Christian winning was huge for him, huge for us, for our sponsor, HyVee, huge. That just eased a lot of pain. It erases a lot of that, having a great race like that. Christian is just a very good young driver with a big, big future ahead of him, I think. It’s fun to be a part of that.
“From day one that Christian joined us; I was always impressed with his work ethic. I think it’s very clear he wants to win, and he puts the effort in that’s needed, whether it’s on or off track.
“Christian gets it. He is a young guy, but he understands. I think his win at Toronto, all this does is as a driver the first time you win a big race it’s like, okay, wow, I can do that, and I can do it again.
“Christian has been just a joy to work with because every day when you see Christian, you know you’re going to get 100 percent, and that to me is what it’s all about.”
DRIVERS EXCITED TO EXPLORE TACTICAL OPTIONS WITH NEW
HYBRID ENGINE
The much-anticipated NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut of the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with hybrid power was put to the test at the Honda INDY 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Learning the new hybrid technology may have been one of the reasons why the starting lineup at the Honda INDY 200 was unique. Three NTT INDYCAR SERIES champions who have combined for 10 titles – Scott Dixon, Will Power and Josef Newgarden –were eliminated in the first round of qualifying.
The hybrid system adds 105 pounds to the car.
Dixon, who qualified 14th in his No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, said the new weight distribution and the deployment and regeneration of the hybrid system affects the car’s balance and handling.
When the hybrid assist button is deployed, additional horsepower is engaged. More horsepower will change the car’s handling.
The other aspect is the power isn’t limitless from the hybrid; it has a short duration before depletion. A driver must regenerate the hybrid unit for future use. When losing horsepower during regeneration, the car will handle differently than it would when having additional horsepower.
That’s the beauty of this hybrid technology: how drivers use it and adapt to the change in the car’s handling differs with every competitor and every team.
“Just comparing to other drivers, that’s kind of been
the main thing,” Malukas said. “I’ve really enjoyed seeing the differences because all the drivers that we’ve had here, Felix (Rosenqvist) and then all the Andretti Global guys, we all have different strategies, and, yet, they all kind of work in their own ways.”
Team Penske teammates Newgarden (No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet) and Scott McLaughlin (No. 3 Sonsio Team Penske Chevrolet), winners of two of the last three Mid-Ohio races, said the unique nature of the hybrid technology is that every driver likes different aspects. What works for some may not work for others.
Pato O’Ward noticed the changes to his No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet but credited his team for ensuring the car wasn’t affected too much by the extra horsepower and different balance. “There’s just so much you can do,
and the car balance is very sensitive to where you pick,” he said. “So, it can actually help you in terms of balance, but it also can hurt you. It’s a new hurdle, a new challenge.”
“In my opinion, it was great,” reigning series champion Palou said of the hybrid. “Much better, much more fun than I anticipated.
“Every lap you can do something different to try and fix your car. I would say that it made even more of a difference during the race than qualifying. I’m 100 percent up for it.”
The innovative hybrid system is comprised of a low-voltage (48V) Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and Energy Storage System (ESS), consisting of 20 ultracapacitors, both of which fit inside the bellhousing located
between the Chevrolet and Honda INDYCAR SERIES internal combustion engine and the gearbox.
One of the hybrid’s features helped to maintain the suspense until the checkered flag. Romain Grosjean spun off track and stalled his No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet with three laps to go following an incident that would almost certainly have triggered a race-ending caution in previous events because INDYCAR SERIES cars had no onboard starters. But Grosjean was able to use the hybrid supercapacitors to refire his engine and return to the track, and the race stayed green.
That allowed Palou to keep alive his full-tilt pursuit of O’Ward, which fell just short.
Palou said he used both the hybrid and Push to Pass – which combined to deliver an additional 120 horsepower to his No. 10 Ridgeline Lubricants Chip Ganassi Racing Honda – in the battle with O’Ward.
“I could see where Pato
was using it,” he said. “I was trying to use it at different places to see if I could get an advantage somewhere. But I think both are important. If you forget about the hybrid, I think you lose a tenth and a half that it’s for free, maybe a little bit more.”
Third-place finisher Scott McLaughlin said the hybrid technology is fun because it provides another tool to help deliver a victory in one of the most competitive racing series in the world.
“That’s what I think is really cool about deploying,” McLaughlin said after earning his third consecutive top-five finish at Mid-Ohio in the No. 3 Sonsio Team Penske Chevrolet. “Literally we push a button, and so much changes whether you’re battling with someone or by yourself trying to get lap time. That and Push to Pass on top of that.
“It’s busy, but I think that’s where you’re going to see the difference, and there’s going to be some mistakes creep in. There’s a lot going on. But it’s fun.”
Marcus Ericsson finished fifth in the No. 28 Delaware Life Honda for Andretti Global, and he praised the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for the decision to implement the revolutionary technology midseason.
“To have a fully new unit and so little incidents throughout the weekend, that’s pretty impressive for the series to be able to do that,” he said. “My hats off to them.”
The series liked what it saw at Mid-Ohio giving a statement of praise for the debut:
“The performance of the new INDYCAR hybrid power unit at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was impactful and highly encouraging. All stakeholders in the INDYCAR paddock share in the pride and excitement for the future that this milestone has generated. It is the result of a truly unique collaboration between Chevrolet and Honda and the culmination of hundreds of hours of engineering, preparation, testing and execution.”

PABST ON TOP AGAIN
TThe last four seasons of USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire have ended with a different team at the top of the pecking order. Jay Howard Driver Development was top dog in 2020 with Christian Rasmussen, who subsequently went on to claim championships in
both USF Pro 2000 and, last year, INDY NXT before securing a ride in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for 2024 with Ed Carpenter Racing. The following year it was DEForce Racing to the fore with Brazilian Kiko Porto. Then in 2022 Cape Motorsports capped its remarkable run of 10 championships in 12 years through the efforts of
Michael d’Orlando before calling time and heading off to fresh pastures in INDY NXT.
Last year, finally, after falling agonizingly short on a regular basis over the course of the past decade, Pabst Racing broke through in style for its first driver’s championship as Simon Sikes scored six race wins, seven poles

and nine fastest race laps. Sikes also took home a scholarship valued at $433,200 to make the step up to USF Pro 2000.
Coincidentally, Pabst also secured its first USF Pro 2000 crown last year, providing Myles Rowe with the springboard to ascend to INDY NXT in 2024. It is therefore no surprise to see Augie Pabst’s Wisconsin-based team challenging for more honors this season. Max Garcia, from Coconut Grove, Fla., proved to be the class of the field early on, scoring three straight victories – two of them even before his 15th birthday. Since then he has added a
string of consistent finishes to ensure he still maintains a relatively comfortable 42-point advantage heading into the final five races of the season, starting with this weekend’s Continental Tire Grand Prix of Toronto doubleheader.
The “form man” of late, however, has been VRD Racing’s Max Taylor. The 16-year-old from Hoboken, N.J., won two of the three most recent races at Mid-Ohio a couple of weeks ago, adding to his previous victories at the Indianapolis road course and Road America, vaulting him to second in the points table.

Exclusive Autosport’s Joey Brienza, from Golden, Colo., also is enjoying a strong season with four podium finishes, while other likely contenders

will include Indianapolis native Elliot Cox (Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Development), who has displayed consistently good speed; 2023 USF Juniors champion Nicolas Giaffone (DEForce Racing), from Sao Paulo, Brazil, who has made steady improvement after a disappointing start to his rookie campaign; and Jay Howard Driver Development’s Michael Costello, from Naples, Fla., who has two recent secondplace finishes to his name.

A ROLLER-COASTER RIDE
Story By
USF Pro 2000
Presented by Continental Tire, the top rung on the highly acclaimed USF Pro Championships driver development ladder, has reached the critical stage in its season. Only four races remain – this weekend’s Continental Tire Grand Prix of Toronto and one more doubleheader event finale on the West Coast at Portland International Raceway – to determine who will win a scholarship package valued at $681,500 to advance to the next step on the ladder, INDY NXT, in 2025.
This year’s title-chase has had more twists and turns than usual. Indeed, the major protagonists have experienced an emotional roller-coaster as fortunes have ebbed one way and then another.
After finishing a close third in the 2023 USF2000 standings, Australia’s Lochie Hughes started his rookie USF Pro 2000 season with Turn 3 Motorsport in style with a victory and a secondplace finish on the streets of St. Petersburg. But a substandard weekend at NOLA Motorsports Park saw him slip to sixth in

the standings, a distant 66 points behind runaway leader Nikita Johnson, who had claimed four wins, a second and a fourth from the opening six races for VRD Racing.
Johnson, from Gulfport, Fla., continued his run of success with another victory to commence the tripleheader event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in May. At that stage the 16-year-old seemed like an irresistible force. But then came a colossal switch in momentum.
A second apparent win at Indianapolis for Johnson was overturned by a technical infraction which also brought a 30-point deduction. That disappointment was followed by a crash in the only oval race of the season at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park and a difficult weekend at Road America where Johnson struggled with his car’s setup and was perhaps fortunate to secure a pair of top-10 results.
Hughes, by contrast, took a second and two thirds at Indianapolis, followed by another runnerup finish on the oval and a magnificent sweep of all three race wins in Wisconsin. The streak took the hard-scrabble Australian into a relatively comfortable 50-point lead heading into the final three

doubleheader events of the season.
But then came another momentum change two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio, where Johnson thrust himself back into the fight with two more victories while Hughes had to settle for a fourth and a seventh.
Hughes and Johnson are now separated by a mere 26 points. And Pabst Racing’s Jace Denmark also is firmly in the mix following a strong run of form which sees him just six points adrift of Johnson’s current tally. Denmark, who relocated from Arizona to the Indianapolis area for this season, is still in search of his first USF Pro 2000 victory, but after four
podium results in 2023 and seven more this year, surely it is just around the corner?
Teammate Christian Brooks also is still searching for his first win of the season. The Californian former karting star has displayed enormous potential in recent years, but has always struggled to meet the financial demands. Thankfully, his hard work and perseverance has paid off, such that Brooks has not only finished on the podium three times in the last four races, he has also secured a concurrent ride in INDY NXT for the remainder of the season.
