TO WIN COMPETITION BRED 16 WAY REBOUND AND COMPRESSION ADJUSTABILITY The HSD MonoPro coilover is exactly what the performance tuning scene has been crying out for. The MonoPro series coilovers offer the most features and the best quality for under $1350. HSD Coilovers use a Monotube damper design favoured by high end suspension companies and each kit is TUV approved. This level of quality and performance is usually found on much more expensive suspension products.

HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS

Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twintube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

A very wide range of height adjustment is possible without affecting the spring pre-load or the damper stroke length. So whether you want sporty or totally slammed, you still get the full performance of the damper.

FULLY ADJUSTABLE DAMPING

Our 16 Stage damping adjustment allows quick, easy and accurate control of the damping so you can tune it to suit your style and setup. Set to soft for your daily drive, then quickly switch to hard for track days or competition use.

PILLOW BALL TOP MOUNTS

Our coilovers come with Anodised Aluminium top mounts with integrated heavy duty noise-free pillowball bearings all round. A wide range of camber adjustment is included on front strut models.

ISSUE PREVIEW

GET YOUR STYLE ON W

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILLIP AWAD

Starting off, you’ll find a rare and exclusive interview with one of the most creative and influential builders of our time, Wataru Kato of Liberty Walk. His work has been found on some of the rarest, priciest and most stunninglydetailed cars to date, and each build leaves us anxiously waiting for what’s next. But, before you turn to page 22, there’s plenty more in store. The DeviantART Lexus IS 350 F SPORT is a car that existed only in the mind of Rob Evans. That is until an online contest put him in touch with the elite build team that is VIP Auto Salon, who recreated his vision perfectly, and up against SEMA deadlines, no less. You’ll also find a car featured in a contest of our own — Luigi Arroyo’s Honda S2000 outfitted with an ultra-rare J’s Racing body kit. Arroyo’s sick creation finished third in our 2013 Tuner Battlegrounds competition and drew a ton of onlookers at the final showdown at SEMA. For your Euro lovers out there, the supercharged VW Jetta in these pages hails from the Great White North and features the clean styling of the pre-2000 V-Dubs in one of the tightest

DIY-stance builds we’ve seen yet. Classic is an understatement. Switching gears to the motorsport side, Dan Kearney’s 2006 Viper SRT10 was given the full ORACLE Lighting treatment complete with halos, fog lights and a rear brake light array that makes it one of the meanest drift cars on the circuit from the front, or trying to keep up with it from behind. We also catch up with the perfectionists at Platinum VIP to get the low down on car clubs, and have a sit down with three statesmen from the most influential car shows in North America: Importfest, Eurokracy and Tuner Galleria. Feel like a little knowledge drop? How about an engine and wire tuck guide and some Stance 101? If that’s not your bag, the MFest Liberty Walk M3 VIP Modular wheel build will definitely perk you up; it’s a bit of shop history, build notes and some of the nicest photography this side of, well, anywhere. It’s truly first-class all the way. And that’s just what a Style Issue is supposed to be. So as you read through the stories and digest the information, have a look at our Buyers Guides, which should help steer you in the right direction to create your own top-shelf build. And hopefully, we’ll see you at the top of the charts in the not-toodistant future!

hen it comes to the aftermarket industry, style is everything. It’s what catches our attention and what makes us stare. When we see a car that captures the essence and story of its owner, its style is the result of two things: vision and execution. Rarely do we see cars that encompass both, yet when we do, it makes us want to learn more — about the builder and the machine. Luckily, with our Style Issue, we’re able to feature some of those cars and the people behind them. We’ve been talking to the people in the build and show scene to see exactly what makes this industry tick, and we couldn’t be happier to share it with you.

he Special Equipment Marketing Association’s annual show in Las Vegas, better known as SEMA, is the event of all events when it comes to cars, equipment and the latest trends to take over the industry. Overseas, Japan’s equivalent is known as the Tokyo Auto Salon. Among the best displays at each, there are always the vehicles that stand out from the rest. Here’s a look at some of the most progressive, tight – and in some cases, ridiculous – builds that took over the stage and to give us something to dream of for the better part of this year.

BY ADAM ZILLIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM ZILLIN, PHILLIP AWAD, ERIC EIKENBERRY & SHAUN KEENAN

PASMAG: What is the philosophy behind Liberty Walk? WATARU KATO: Liberty Walk is a company that promotes fun and the wonderfulness of car modification or customization to the young community.

22

PASMAG

How did you get into this industry? Well, I have always loved modified cars, and my passion brought me to a workshop-related job when I was 21 years-old.

Do you consider yourself to be a bellwether (trendsetter) or a rebel? Of course I am a bellwether, but also a rebel. I try to do something new that no one else has done, but at the same time, I do modifications that subvert strict Japanese laws regarding automobile modification.

PRESIDENTIAL TREATMENT “Including [Akira] Nakai (of RWB), Kei Miura and I are all old school car enthusiasts. We don’t have concerns about each other and we just recognize each other’s talent. That is why all three of us get along very well.” ~ Wataru Kato

Why did you choose Liberty Walk as the company name? Liberty Walk means “walking freely.” Don’t let the rules prevent you from enjoying your free movement; enjoy what you love to do without bothering others in any way. Do you usually work on old cars or new cars? I prefer old school cars, but it is a business, so I also work on new cars on quite a regular basis. European or Japanese? Generally, I work on foreign cars like European or American cars, but there are Japanese cars also, so it’s a bit of a mix. But honestly, my favorite car of all time is a Skyline I used to drive when I was 18 years-old.

What is the relationship between Liberty Walk and Rocket Bunny? [Kei] Miura of Rocket Bunny and I work together through the production phase. Liberty Walk’s LB Performance is a collaboration of Miura’s design and my own. The design is not biased strongly towards either of our designs – we take good ideas from each of our designs so we get along really well. Realistically, we use Works body parts and fasteners for overfenders and we are just in love with these parts. So we have included some Works parts into our current designs that we are working on. The greatness of Works has been proven for a long time – since Skyline modification became popular – and so Works parts are

essential for both Rocket Bunny and Liberty Walk customizations. About Rocket Bunny, I just get so amazed about their detailed work and their great sense. Including [Akira] Nakai (of RWB), we are all old school car enthusiasts. We don’t have concerns about each other and we just recognize each other’s talent. That is why all three of us get along very well. Can you tell us the biggest problem in term of tuning aftermarket cars? I think the laws in Japan, the strictness of modification, are becoming a barrier. Also those eco-friendly cars are becoming popular while the un-eco-friendly, realistic cars are becoming outcasts and unacceptable in this society.

What are some unique features about Japanese tuning? I think Japanese style modification is quite enjoyable, as very detailed work is done to each part such as exterior, aero and engine in some realistic and humorous ideas.

PRESIDENTIAL TREATMENT “I want to re-emphasize to all tuning enthusiasts that you cannot forget your passion to create the best car. It is the number one essential to have that feeling.” ~ Wataru Kato

But the problem are not the police, correct? Actually, they are. Police and Japanese laws are both problematic. Tuners are facing a limitation in their interests and modification because of them. But ignore those authorities or rules and be a rebel, and that is our LB performance (laughs). If we get told off, we will let them be, but we are not going to follow the rules they decided just because they could. Anyway, this is not really the case overseas, it looks like. It seems like modifications are more acceptable in America, so we are trying to expand our network with other countries like America so the awesome Japanese modified cars we make can be accepted there. It seems like America has less strict rules regarding things such as pricing, modified mufflers, angled tires and so on. But Japan is so strict about those things. So, I think there are many people who want to modify, but they just bite their tongue. I thought Japanese police would not be that strict… They are definitely strict. Recently you finished an M3. What do you think you will build next? Next? I will keep building eyepopping cars. If I am building highclass cars, I would definitely work on the Ferrari 458, Maserati Gran Turismo and Porsche 991. The rest would be more realistic cars.

Wataru Kato - Liberty Walk Interview 16.02.indd 3

How about a Lamborghini? Mainly I would be doing Lamborghini, but many companies have been sending me emails asking to do LB Performance on their cars also, so there are a variety of cars. If I want to choose one high-class car to work on, it would be a Ferrari 458 as I have bought it for myself. So I can work on my car as a test subject. You said varieties of cars. What kind of cars are they? Ferrari, Porsche and other European cars. There are many cars among those I want to work with, but my top three have already been chosen. I also plan on working on Lexus and other less-expensive cars that customers are more familiar with. Liberty Walk was not involved in the overfender for the 86, right? Only Mr. Miura? Yeah, 86 was Miura. I do different cars. How is the Race 86 kit? I think the 86 kit is very good, but again, it is hard to do in Japan. It is because modification culture exists under very strict rules. You get told off trying to use monocoque bodies from older cars. I don’t think they are as strict about it overseas compared to Japan. So, sales of the monocoque body are way higher overseas. Can you use it on a Lambo? I think it is allowed for Lambo. It is all depending on the strength of the body.

But the GT-R had an over-fender right? Yeah, it used to be, but now the laws have changed and it is not that easy anymore. You also can’t have GT wing correct? That is understandable but over-fenders as well?! Nope, authorities would be on your case and you wouldn’t pass a Warrant of Fitness (compulsory inspection). I don’t think America has a Warrant of Fitness system, so it is sweet over there. That is why I want to keep building cool Japanese-style cars and send them over there. What are some countries you’re thinking of expanding your network to? I would love to expand to Australia and Europe. Japanese-style modification is amazing. We have great sense, designs and ideas. I just want everybody, from the USA to Italy, Germany and Malaysia, to witness the modification that Liberty Walk does. I want them to get interested in car modification. Functionality or shape? I prefer shape over functionality, although functionality is important. Of course car makers say it is better to have a quiet car to drive, but I personally like unique, loud, high riskshaped cars. I understand that acceleration, braking and other features are very important, but good-looking cars are awesome!

PRESIDENTIAL TREATMENT

“I think it is very important to say that there is nothing wrong with using copied products. I think it’s fine as long as the owner is happy with using copied parts.” ~ Wataru Kato What is your advice for tuning enthusiasts who read our magazine? Firstly, you have to remember that you must love your car in order to create a good machine. For me, a car is like a human, a girlfriend. You have to take care of her, take her for a makeover. Then you will have one happy car that will not let you down. Is that the reason why you don’t drive your cars? No, my cars that I work on are like my granddad or grandma. I treat them like my elders. Be gentle and careful and the sentimental value will increase. My advice to the tuning enthusiasts is to love your car, look after it well and give it the makeover that it deserves.

Is it risky to have lowered cars or stanced cars? People watch F1, Super D2 or race cars and get interested in cars. So it is only normal to want a race car that you can drive on public roads. In terms of performance, of course it would be better if it can be driven, but you cannot drive fast on normal roads in Japan. It may be the same overseas. But even then, you still want to drive a racing car on public roads. A highway racer is one of the concepts of performance in our projects. So people look at LB Performance cars and often ask if those cars are racing cars. They are surprised when I tell them that those cars are normal road-going cars. That is why I always dream of building the perfect true modified racer machine. So yeah, long story short: that is why I think shape is very important. Out of the cars on your list, which car is the one you want to modify the most? I guess high-class cars are always fun to modify, but I also

28

PASMAG

want to give a makeover to the bad looking cars. It is not that difficult to modify attractive cars, but it is more challenging to pick and improve a car that you think, or know, would not be sold because of the looks. So I like challenges. Can you give me an example? For example, a Toyota Corolla. I think the Murciélago didn’t have a good sales rate among Lamborghinis compared to the novellooking Diablo, so maybe [that as well]. It may become more masculine if we put on a body kit, wings or aero parts and it could be popular. To be honest, the price of a Murciélago went up since the release of LB parts. How much is that car? $250,000 or $300,000. But these can go up in price by another $20,000 on top of that. Just by changing parts? Yup, but the price for a whole car went up because of the popularity.

What is your take on cheap copy parts? Copy? I don’t think copying is bad. The reason for this is there are people who can only afford to buy cheaper parts. They may want the cool parts you see in the magazines, but they can’t afford to buy them. So they go for cheaper copy versions and enjoy their cars. I think it is very important to say that there is nothing wrong with using copied products. I think it’s fine as long as the owner is happy with using copied parts. Of course, the real deal will be $50,000 and fake one will be $500, but there is no change in the owner’s sense of values nor his or her enthusiasm, even if they may want to buy the $50,000 one. Not an example like that $50,000 and $500, but what about a BLITZ wheel set costing $3,000 to $4,000 when a Taiwanese copy is $1,000. They look very similar, but… We shouldn’t be judgmental about that. If the buyer thinks it is okay, then it is his or her choice and there’s nothing wrong with that. A person who purchased the $3,000 one may show off, but if you can’t afford that, it doesn’t matter if you buy the real or the fake. I want to re-emphasize to all tuning enthusiasts that you cannot forget your passion to create the best car. It is the number one essential to have that feeling. If you have ever failed to build the machine you wanted to build, don’t give up. Try again and make it better than your original goal. Everybody makes mistakes. Learning is all about that. Even I make mistakes during the modification process, but I just restart and keep going. Then, when you feel like you did your best and it shows in your resulting machine, you’ve passed!

DEVIANTART LEXUS IS 350 BY ROB EVANS & VIP AUTO SALON FROM SCRATCH TO SEMA IN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS BY JORDAN LENSSEN

W

hen the new IS was unveiled last year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, mouths salivated at the sharp new styling and bold new direction of Lexus. No longer was it the Japanese brand of luxury for the older generation, Lexus was coming into its own as a marque of aggressive luxury that could also perform. The IS 350 F Sport is largely an appearance upgrade for the impressive 350 model, but it gives onlookers enough of an idea of the massive potential of this new German sports sedan challenger. The styling enhancements are obviously the biggest draw for the latest IS. In the build-up to the 2013 SEMA show, Lexus opened the doors to auto designers, graphic artists and general enthusiasts to create their idea of the ultimate IS on DeviantART.com, which would be built and shown at SEMA. The competition was completely open to the public and surely, the automaker didn’t know what to expect. More than 500 submissions ranged from simple paint schemes to hand-drawn catastrophes, but thankfully the competition was filled with its fair share of skilled artists and experienced automotive designers who wanted to see their designs come to life. The Lexus IS you see here is the winning design courtesy of Rob Evans, and arguably the boldest and most radical of the bunch. Ironically, it’s also one of the cleanest, carefully walking the tightrope of a monstrous wide-body design while staying true to Lexus’s identity. To give you the Coles Notes version, Evans’ experience in design stretches far back, but

30

his background is probably what you’d least expect. He took plenty of art classes growing up, even enrolling in courses throughout college, but he got his start as a designer for home and garden accessories, where he still puts in his 9-to-5. His experience doesn't detract from this build in the least. In fact, it makes it that much more impressive. Evans always had an interest in automotive design, building scale models and even taking part in a Scion design competition years ago. He didn’t win, but it gave him the experience to know the type of quality required to get to the top. His work pushed him so far that he made the Lexus submission deadline with less than an hour remaining. Initially the car sparked controversy, and it still does; some love it, some hate it. Maybe you’re a fan of the wide body, maybe you’re not. Some people have spoken out against the huge flares, the lack of working rear doors, even the one-off wheels have drawn criticism, to which we scratch our heads. But none of that overshadows the creative vision behind the design. And while it’s one thing to conceptualize it, putting together a build like this in an extremely short time frame is a whole different story. Tasked with that challenge was Clark Ishihara and his crew at VIP Auto Salon. Ishihara was one of four judges on the Lexus panel to determine the winning car, along with Owen Peacock of Lexus, Nate Martinez from Motor Trend, and Alex Shen, head of the renowned Calty Design house in California, which is responsible for the Lexus LFA and the radical Toyota FT-HS and

FT-1 concepts, to name a few. “There were a lot of great submissions, but there was something about [Evans’] design that really spoke to us – or I should say, spoke to me in terms of a SEMA project to build,” Ishihara says. “When I was looking at the other submissions, a lot of these guys were altering the grille. And as you know, the front grill of a vehicle – that’s its marque – you don’t want to [change] that. Even though there were some radical designs, I had to shy away from them because the Lexus brand is embodied in that spindle grille. A lot of thought and planning went into the development of that, and to have it altered really changes the brand’s identity.” In fact, the grille was much of the inspiration for the rest of Evans’ design. Along with a wickedly-aggressive front bumper and splitter, the low, wide-slung grille is accentuated by larger air inlets, a lower stance and one of the wildest wide bodies yet. On the wheel end, a set of one-off Nutek forged three-pieces sit 20 inches wide in the front and rear, wrapped in 285/30R20s up front and 345/25R20s in the back. The -59 and -30 offsets put this setup nearly eight inches out from the stock bodywork, and that’s where VIP’s skills were put to the test. This isn’t any ordinary wide body, and because the team had just a month-and-a-

half to build it, they employed some old-school foam and fiberglass techniques to get the IS 350 show floor ready in the nick of time. “We basically hand-sculpted it with a small knife and sanding materials; layer by layer, just sculpting it, getting it to where it needed to be,” Ishihara recalls. “Typically, what you’d do is take the foam mold – basically the foam becomes the mold – and you take the reverse plug from that and that becomes your part. But we ran out of time, so we had to leave it as is. If we had more time, we would’ve used clay for all the parts, but that process takes a long time; for each layer of clay you put down it’s like a 24-hour dry time. So we fiberglassed over it, smoothed it out, then shot it with paint. We literally finished it a couple of days before SEMA.” Extending at the front, the bodywork is draped over half of the wheel, leaving the back section open for a rear winglet that pushes air down the side of the car and into the side splitter. At the top, an engine cooling vent sits in front of the F Sport badge, which, combined with the seven-spindle Nutek wheels and massive six-piston 380 mm Brembo brakes, is nothing short of a masterpiece of shapes and contours. Moving toward the rear quarter panel, the side splitter blends seamlessly into a giant rear duct in front of the wheel, which could easily

DEVIANTART LEXUS IS 350 be routed for brake cooling. A discerning eye might also notice the rear bodywork is built over the back doors rendering them useless, but given the time constraints to produce a finished product, it’s something that would have otherwise been accommodated, so we’ll give them a get-out-of-jail-free card here. Where the design is most engaging with the original IS is at the tail end of the car. Evans intuitively played on the new, extended taillights to blend his wide-body and bumper lines for a quasi factory-finish look. His design language from the front wheel work also carries over to the back for a uniform finish. The redesigned two-tone bumper and rear diffuser completes a look that could have easily come from the Lexus concept studio. A Universal Air Suspension with AccuAir I-Level control gives the car a nice, tight stance, but it’s even more impressive given that VIP was forced to build the car without the custom wheels, which were being built simultaneously with the car. “The craziest part [of the build] was sculpting the body without the wheels because they are one-off customs,” Ishihara says. “But the measurements were pretty good. When you’re sculpting, there are a lot of measurements, so making sure everything was on par for the specifications of the entire build was important. We were going to do a 345 tire, but it came to the point when we weren’t able to test out too many tires, so we went the safe route to make sure we had a tire that was nice and stretched to fit.” If time weren’t a factor, we’d undoubtedly see this IS rolling the streets. But Lexus and VIP Auto Salon took on a project few would dare to do: let the public design their dream car. It’s bold, controversial and the ultimate test for the builders who created some of the

edication. It’s the one word that describes this build. In fact, I have never seen someone so dedicated to a build in my life. The amount of changes that this car has gone through is jaw dropping, having gone from being a framedragging stance car to the meaty tired monster you see now. A few years ago you would have found Luigi rolling around so low he always got stuck on speed bumps. BBS LMs in white with stretched tires and lots of camber. It was a clean and classy look that lasted for some time, but this was not enough for Luigi. Fascinated with high-end Japanese tuners like Abbey Road Company and J’s Racing, the JDM bug hit and man, did it hit hard. Before we continue, keep in mind that this is a build that is done on a working man’s budget. Also Luigi doesn’t live at home and get parts from mom and dad. This is a testament to show that if you work hard enough and dream big you can and will achieve anything you want. After months of going back and forth and trying to sort out the budget for his first big transformation, Luigi came up with a very aggressive white and green street combo that made people question if it was in fact the same car. The car is outfitted with a J’s Racing front bumper, hood, rear diffuser, canards and GT Wing as well as FEED Side skirts and a set of ASM Rear over-fenders. Not to mention the wheels — a set of Takata Green TE37, the holy grail of limited-run wheels from Rays. Of course, the only way to run such wheels is on a set of Toyo Tires. Everything on this build is top shelf and no expense has been spared. In fact, these parts alone are worth more new than many used S2000s!

“Fascinated with high-end Japanese tuners like Abbey Road Company and J’s Racing, the JDM bug hit and man, did it hit hard.” The build was loved so much by J’s Racing that even Murakami-san himself has put his John Hancock on this extremely rare and authentic J’s Racing carbon hood! You would think that after all of the shows, events and love received for the form it was now in that Luigi would be satisfied with his build. The problem with car tuners is that we are never happy with our projects and we never stop building. We always have to keep striving, and do more. The headache with a lot of these high-end Japanese tuning companies is that very few pieces are shipped over from Japan. The cost of these parts is then multiplied due to the 38

PASMAG

shipping and customs fees associated with such product being imported. Many tuners decide to support the more affordable knock-offs rather than pay and wait for such a product, which in turn kills off shops that put everything they have into their craft. To others, this isn’t an issue at all with the price or waiting. Sometimes people even ship air freight in order to receive their desired parts quicker, while others hunt for used parts in forum classifieds since certain parts are no longer produced or are too hard to obtain. Support the real product! If you support knock-offs, soon there won’t even be knockoffs to buy because they’ll have nothing new to copy! Luigi consulted with J’s Racing Japan and GO Tuning and decided to go all out. It was not for the faint of heart as it meant there would be no turning back. Cutting into quarter panels, a complete re-spray of his car and the price of the kit itself costs enough to make your mother cry. Luigi would be the only one in California with such a rare and aggressive kit, though, so he decided to bite the bullet and place the order. In order to fund this project he sold off all of his existing aero, which moved rather quickly due to how rare authentic J’s Racing parts are. Entering PASMAG’s Tuner Battlegrounds competition. Luigi had very few sponsors, but

that would soon change. His car was so unique it quickly rose to the top of the online competition and was awarded one of four spots at SEMA for the ultimate showdown, with the winner being chosen by fan voting. This was not simply a one-day car show; it was months of voting and brackets to help choose the ultimate car by using the people’s voice rather than a judge’s opinion. Sponsors such as Buddy Club, Whiteline, BASF, Eneos and Takata jumped on board to help Luigi finish his masterpiece on time for Vegas. The finishing touches being those Toyo R888 tires that undoubtedly complete the track look. There was no way of keeping his build a secret. Luigi tried his best to be secretive until the car was unveiled, but a few people couldn’t resist snapping a photo of it sitting tucked away and posted it online before the show began. From the beautiful BASF white paint with green ghost pearl paint job, to the 40

overly aggressive wide body and enormous wing, you can tell that no expense has been spared with this build. Down to the last hour, a few mechanical problems arose right before roll-out (as many SEMA builders can relate to), but he worked at a ridiculous pace to finish and fix the car. Even though he missed his original appointment for the car to be transported, the car still made it to Vegas. You would think that with such an amazing car, an import model girlfriend and the number of sponsors he has that there would be some sort of an ego. Well, you couldn’t be more wrong. Luigi is one of the most down-to-Earth individuals around, and is never hesitant to lend a helping hand to those in need. hose who live on the outskirts of urban Montreal in the L’Assomption area of Quebec and are vehicularlyinclined in any way know of Gabriel Laroche, or “Gab.” Some know him as the owner and operator of the ever-busy GAB Eurosport garage, full of Volkswagens and Audis. Euro fans, most notably VW enthusiasts, know Gabriel as that crazy guy who stanced a ’98 Jetta GLX and dropped a 3.6L FSI engine from a Porsche Cayenne in it. If that doesn’t convince you that this guy is entrenched in the scene, let’s also mention that he has his own ice racing team, which he built and tuned his own MKIV Golf for (with a 2.0 TFSI Passat heart and plenty of Audi goodies). Laroche has that DIY attitude that not only ensures absolute attention to detail and the cleanest of builds, but his cars always get noticed as something special. Some say his latest build is to blame for the recent surge in neck brace sales from all of the double takes. Laroche is a tried and true Euro nut and a self professed lover of anything under the VW umbrella. That being said, what else would Gab use as the base for his newest creation other than his absolute favorite and old standby: the MKIII Jetta? Right off the bat, this car has something missing and that’s a good thing. In a scene that can often be clogged with gaudy body kits and a certain cheese factor, Laroche’s Jetta delivers a breath of fresh air. This VW embodies fresh

and clean, and not only in appearance. All parts used on this MKIII are OEM or from the most trusted manufacturers. If Gab decides he’s still not satisfied with the catalog’s offerings? In true DIY fashion, well, he does it himself. On the outside, any auto fan can appreciate the fit and finish, but a Euro enthusiast can pick out the certain touches that make this car a fanboy’s (or fangirl’s) dream. As mentioned, the workmanship on this car is impeccable and that’s thanks to one thing: Laroche kept it custom. Besides the E-Code headlights, everything else on the outside is OEM. VW fans will appreciate the dedication with the inclusion of the Vento front grill from the Jetta’s European cousins. The front lip is a chin spoiler from the

VR6 variant. Even the paint is legitimate Tornado Red from Volkswagen’s factory color palette. The MKIII sits pretty on some drool-worthy, deep dish, polished CCW Classic Series threepiece wheels — 16x8.5-in. in the front and 16x9.5-in. in the rear, making for fantastic fitment. After they were dressed in Falken Azenis rubber and tucked ever so slightly up into the rolled fenders, Laroche really set off the look by giving the rear wheels a slight amount of tasteful negative camber. This stanced VW isn’t only a show car though; it has to be a daily driver as well. For a killer look that delivers functionality, Gab went with an Airlift Performance suspension kit and V2 management system. Now the MKIII can go from bad and bagged at the show to king of the speed bumps on the jaunt home. Gab really lets his talent shine through the beauty that is the Jetta’s engine bay. If you were to look up clean in the dictionary, you’ll probably see this engine bay. Only the essentials remain, with everything else either deleted or cleverly relocated and tucked away. Powerplant-wise, Laroche did what any VW nut would do given the chance; he dropped in 2.8 liters and 24 valves of VR6 goodness. Just what anyone would do isn’t good enough for Gab though. A VR6 isn’t far enough, so he figured the six-cylinder could use the help of a chip tune from C2 Motorsports. You would think that after that, there’s no way that Laroche could need anything else power wise. He already has a gorgeous set up with some respectable power, but we’re talking about the guy who dropped a Cayenne motor into a Jetta here, remember? To push the boundaries a little more, Laroche thought a Vortech V2 supercharger would look right at home

feeding his Jetta’s VR6 heart. This causes the little MKIII to unleash 320 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. Mein Gott! Where air is concerned, Laroche wanted to make sure there were no restrictions. After all, air is also needed alongside the Siemens 630 cc fuel injectors to churn out numbers in the 300s. Air comes through a K&N filter into a custom made intake MAF. After passing through the HGP Turbo short runner intake manifold and Audi B7 S4 throttle body, the exhaust from the resulting explosion is blown out the back of a 2.5-inch Magnaflow exhaust system, which Laroche took the liberty of customizing for even better flow. To keep up with the madness under the hood, the VR6 is mated to a five-speed 02J transmission with a Clutch Masters FX400 clutch and WaveTrac LSD. To slow things down when needed, brake calipers from an Audi TT clamp onto 12.3-inch drilled rotors.

Gab obviously had comfort and luxury on his mind when putting together the interior, but he didn’t forget his commitment to the OEM. While in control of all those ponies, he’s treated to Recaro-made seats from an Audi B7 S4 and a steering wheel from the MKV Jetta while the needles climb on a set of Audi TT gauges. A half roll cage from Profusion sits in the back to keep himself and any precious cargo safe and sound. Laroche brings back to the scene what’s been scarce for a while; a sense of simplicity and cleanliness that stands out from the crowd. His car is obscene under the hood, not on the outside with a body kit and huge spoiler. Pair that with work that was done completely on his own at his shop, and you have a winning combination. Who would have guessed that the next up and coming Euro tuning legend is actually a French Canadian from Quebec? Gut gemacht. Bravo!

DEAN KEARNEY’S ORACLE LIGHTING DODGE VIPER STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON

he 2012 season was a rough one for Dean Kearney. After finishing his sophomore year 20th overall, team owner Sam Hubinette decided to move away from drifting and try his hand at rallycross. Unable to find a ride, Kearney knew he had to take matters into his own hands. He struck a deal with primary sponsor ORACLE Lighting to build a car for 2013 and beyond. With knowledge from driving Hubinette’s Viper, and some close contacts who understood the chassis, Kearney purchased a Viper road race chassis and started transforming the car into a drift monster just six weeks before the Formula D season was set to start. In a short while, Kearney and the team at Designcraft Fabrication in Huntington Beach got

to work, prepping the car to meet the Formula D specifications. Sheet metal was trimmed to the extent of the rule book, making room for a C&R radiator and EMP electric fuel pump in the trunk, and a fueling system consisting of a Bosch 044 fuel pump, Radium Engineering fuel swirl pot, and an array of HPS hoses. All other metal from the rear of the strut towers was removed. In the cabin of the roadster is a full Formula D-legal roll cage, including foot intrusion bars and an ORACLE light bar which stretches across the main hoop and acts as a third brake light. The interior includes a pair of race ready Sparco Pro 2000 seats and harnesses, and the dash has been stripped of most amenities, with carbon fiber sheets blocking off all major openings. BREAKNECK STYLE the hood, with a slew of switches to operate the necessaries within arms reach. A custom hydraulic E-brake handle controls the Wilwood secondary caliper under the rear wheels, while a Sparco shift boot is mated to the OEM Viper shifter. Along with the DJ Safety fire suppression system, the cabin is complete from a race car perspective. Under the hood, the 8.3L Dodge V10 makes even the largest V8 motors look miniature. There’s just enough room between the motor and strut tower for the Paxton supercharger, which ups the horsepower to over 900 ponies and 700 lb-ft of torque. The drivetrain has been overhauled by Brian Crower, with JE pistons pushing the crank up and down in the cylinders. Air starts through the K&N filter before hitting the supercharger, and is pushed out of the engine through a custom set of Magnaflow headers and a custom magnaflow exhaust. All of those horses are feathered through an OS Giken clutch and flywheel to a four-speed G-Force dogbox transmission. Tuning is handled via an AEM Infinity standalone ECU, tuned by the team at Portland Speed Industries out of Portland, OR. Under each corner, Moton remote-reservoir shocks are mated to custom Eibach springs keep the car planted, while some “Karnage special” steering modifications give the Viper the angle it needs to be competitive. 50

“ORACLE even whipped up some custom taillights that tandem challengers can admire through the tire smoke.” While drifting is all about attacking, clipping, and going sideways, you also have to look good doing it. Daley Visuals was responsible for the livery design and application, which makes the Viper stand out even more from the pack. The white and grey digital camo and orange accents make it look tough as nails, and the long hood scoop is wrapped in orange to give the Viper some mean fangs. An APR splitter and winglets give it just enough downforce at the front of the car, while an APR rear wing helps keep the rear wheel drive system connected. All the APR goodies are trimmed in orange, including the front and side splitters, making for a drift car whose visual details definitely match the performance. The style cues continue with a load of accessories from Kearney’s title sponsor, ORACLE Lighting. The Viper’s glaring gaze is even more menacing with the addition of the orange Halo headlights and fog lights, which are paired with

the light strip eyeliner underneath the headlamp assembly. ORACLE even whipped up some custom taillights that tandem challengers can admire through the tire smoke. The USW Forged Tracker modular wheels are dressed in matching orange to round out the details and meet the heavy demands that Kearney puts through them. Achilles 123S radials provide the same grip that power past Formula D USA and Formula D Asia champion Daigo Saito. Despite all of the many changes Kearney made to his program, the 2013 campaign proved to be another difficult one for the Irishman, as he finished 29th overall in the final standings. His season did end on a positive note, however, with a sixth-place result in the season finale at Irwindale, his best finish of 2013. As the 2014 season dawns, Kearney will be looking to build on the strides he made at the end of last season and continue to climb through the ranks of Formula D.

TECH Customizing your Headlamps with

ORACLE LIGHTING I

f you are planning to paint your headlights, install halos, or a projector retrofit, chances are you have researched the methods to opening your factory lights. On the web, there are plenty of myths and hearsay when it comes to the proper procedure to opening and resealing headlights. Advanced Automotive Concepts (AAC) has been specializing in headlight modifications since 1999 and has successfully opened and resealed an estimated 5,000 pairs of headlights, making them experts in this field. Employing six full-time professional lighting technicians, AAC can build up to 12 sets of custom headlights in a day, including lights for SEMA vehicles, celebrities and even race teams. We caught up with AAC as they began building the custom headlights that will be used by Formula Drift Champion Daigo Saito on his Lexus SC 430 for the 2014 FD season. To open these factory headlights we need to soften the seal by applying heat. There are several ways to do this (i.e. heat gun), but the easiest and most consistent way to open the light is with a household oven. Remember not to place the headlight directly on the grill. Instead, use a plank of unpainted wood. Heat the oven to 225° F and insert the headlight for 12 minutes. This will only soften the seal; it will not damage the headlight in any way.

1

As the lens begins to release from the headlight housing, be careful not to get any of the hot sealant on the lens as it will be difficult to remove later. If the headlight lens does not easily separate place the light back in the oven at 225° F for five minutes and repeat Step 2 again. With the lens removed, you can now remove the inner chrome housing and let the parts cool.

3

After 12 minutes, remove the headlight from the oven. The headlight will be hot, so wear insulated gloves while handling it. Gently push the lens away from the housing using a flat head screwdriver. Be careful not to bend or deform the plastic as you work your way around the entire perimeter of the headlight.

2

We will be painting these chrome inner headlight housings, so begin by scuffing the chrome. Using a 3M “fine” Scotch-Brite pad, lightly sand the surface until the chrome is a dull grey color. Remove any residue with prep solvent and a tack-cloth. If you want a two-tone effect, be sure to tape off any areas that do not need to be painted in this step.

Using automotive sealing primer, lay down one or two layers to prevent any impurities in the plastic housing from seeping into your paint. Once the primer is dry, check the finish to ensure it is smooth and consistent. If needed, sand the primer in any rough areas. Now you can apply two or three coats of the desired color. Allow the housings to dry for 30 minutes before applying the clear coat.

5

We want to create a “green glowing eye” effect by illuminating the projector lenses while the headlights are off. To achieve this, disassemble the projector and install an ORACLE SMD Halo ring inside of the projector, facing toward the projector’s reflective cup. The light will reflect off of the cup and give the projector lens the appearance of a green glow.

6

Now it's time to install the Oracle SMD Headlight Halo kit. We begin the installation by test-fitting the rings into the headlight. Each Oracle Halo ring is CAD-designed to fit the opening in that particular headlight, so follow the included installation instructions with your Oracle Halo kit for more information. The ring has a selfadhesive 3M backing to easily secure the halo in place.

Prior to re-assembly, we want to test everything so we can mark and organize our wiring before routing it out of the re-sealed headlight housing. We can test the rings with any 12 V power source (such as a car battery), but a 12 V drill battery works just as well and is more convenient. The white Oracle SMD Halos and green Oracle LEDs are tested and paired up in the projectors.

8

Route your wiring out of the headlight. It sounds simple, but this step is often the source of moisture problems down the road. Do not drill a hole into the headlight – there is no need to add more holes. All headlights are equipped with vent holes from the factory, so route your wires through one of these and reinstall the vent cap after you have fished your wires through.

Now we are ready to reassemble the headlight. To do so, simply reverse the steps of disassembly. Be sure to reinstall any screws or clips that were removed during the disassembly process. Once the headlight is reassembled, re-seal it by heating the seal again. This time we will heat to 215° F for 10 minutes. Once it is heated, press the lens into the housing and clamp until cooled. That's it! Now you've got a custom set of lamps that will set you apart from everyone else!

LOVE

O

ne definition of a car club reads like this: a group of people who share a common interest in motor vehicles. There are others, but I’d say that one sums it up the best. Car clubs have been around for many years, and no matter the type of car or the modifications you favor, there’s likely a car club to match your ride and interests. Clubs always revolve around a membership. In some cases, to become a member of a club, you’ll need to enter what is known as prospect status. As a prospect, you’ll meet current members and demonstrate how you fit in with that club’s mantra. You’ll also take part in many tasks to help benefit club, like assisting in vehicle preparation and helping work on cars going to events. Once you complete your time as a prospect you are awarded full membership. This is usually signified with a special decal for your car and/or a particular piece of clothing that

58

PASMAG

Platinum VIP 16.02.indd 1

bears the club’s name. A majority of clubs are highly-organized and run much like a business. While some are formed from the love of attending car shows or drifting events, other clubs are formed because of a shop or vendor. Clubs that promote shops or vendors were very controversial when the practice first began a few years back, but in time they began to form within the rough definition of a car club. In these clubs you are able to secure sponsorship for your car, whether it’s something as small as decals or as large as a full set of tires. Some clubs may also require a membership fee, which goes to help fund the club and its activities. These are just some small perks to belonging to a club. What is most important in determining the right club is finding one that feels like family to you. A lot of times my club gets together or stages meets just to talk cars, upcoming events, or grab a bite to eat, which is a perfect time to talk business.

Today, [the Platinum VIP] shop works on everything from Chrysler 300s to the Scion FR-S, but the club is recognized primarily for its work on luxury Japanese marques such as Lexus and Infiniti.

CREW

Platinum VIP is major crew from Southern California that started within the body shop of the same name in Irwindale. Kennedy Nguyen started the shop in 2007 and formed the club along with his closest friends, employees and clients, using the cars they built themselves. Today, the shop works on everything from Chrysler 300s to the Scion FR-S, but the club is recognized primarily for its work on luxury Japanese marques such as Lexus and Infiniti. Each car is created and maintained within the shop walls with perfection as the end goal. As a crew, Platinum VIP attends many events throughout California. Each member shares

a common passion for the VIP cars they own, including Lexus LS 430s, LS 460s, GS 450s and even a Euro(!) BMW E92. When Platinum VIP got a booth at SEMA to promote its relationship with Job Design Japan, the entire crew was there to see the show go off without a hitch. Car clubs bring together people from all walks of life. Lowriders and hot-rodders defined this in the early days, but now there is a massive range of clubs to be a part of. Whether they’re laid back or run like a business, car clubs are a major part of our industry. So find one that suits your needs, your personality and of course, your car, and see what it’s all about.

Clubs often get together at their favorite restaurant to eat and talk about their builds and any information pertinent to the crew. Or, they’ll meet at a specific garage equipped with their tools, ready to tackle whatever needs to be done. It might be to help a fellow member perform the latest modification, or just maintenance to keep their cars running at an optimal state. When you have a lot of members, it’s nice to know that no matter how tough the install is, a teammate is always there to help you out. Having a solid membership gives you the opportunity to enjoy your car, learn something new and build lifelong friendships in the process. 60

RANK AND FILE BEHIND THE SCENES OF SHOW JUDGING BY JORDAN LENSSEN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF IMPORTFEST, EUROKRACY & TUNER GALLERIA

W

e all know the blood, sweat and tears that go into making a car your own. The countless nights of analyzing parts, swapping, tailoring and tuning them to make sure that everything works — and more importantly — works well while looking good. If you’re the show-car type, you know the added attention to detail and financial and emotional investment that comes with having your decision and craftsmanship judged. From the judging perspective, the job is equally difficult — representing an organization and making sure you come to the right decisions regarding who wins and who comes second, while covering all your bases and doing so fairly and accurately. For our Style issue it only made sense that we talk with the leaders of the show and judging community from both the U.S. and Canada — which includes former Importfest head judge and operations manager Neal Woon-Fat, Eurokracy co-founder Rick Di Corpo and P-Factor managing director and Tuner Galleria founder Jim Pan — to get the scoop on the judging process and major trends in the industry, especially helpful if you’re involved or considering taking part in the show scene.

PASMAG: How does your judging process work? NEAL WOON-FAT (FORMERLY OF IMPORTFEST): How cars are scored will differ largely from show to show depending on the audience [Importfest] caters to and the audience they want to appeal to. The judging process, I feel, is a way to define a show and what that show represents. In terms of creating judging teams, I have always taken 66

PASMAG

extreme care in the selection of judges. The first criteria, whenever I was a head judge and had to select staff, is that they must have [experience building] a notable and recognized car. If a judge has gone through that process they can connect to the competitor and understand exactly what effort it took to get to that point. The basis and underlying principle of every judging system is fairness and audibility. One of the key issues

with judging a large show is you will have multiple judges with unique tastes and standards... The process I prefer, which I have used/implemented at several shows, is to standardize the judging, a score sheet with a score sheet handbook clearly stating the points scoring system for each category removing the objectiveness; and train judges in groups to standardize their scoring with the score sheets and with each other.

RICK DI CORPO (EUROKRACY): As the owners, we don’t judge the cars; we have other people judging for us. What we do is give them a sheet with certain criteria — it’s people we know and trust can do it right. In the past, they talk to the owner to get a feel for why they did what they did. It’s more than just painting the car, putting a body kit on. So it’s more about the owner’s story and going around, seeing if what they’ve done on their car — obviously it has to look nice — matches the story. For this year, we’re going to do things a little differently, where there will be a hand-picked selection of cars, and those owners will have to come on stage to tell their story and have the audience decide. So, we don’t really want it to be like we’re gods picking the winners; we want the people to have a say in their own trophies and their own awards. We don’t want shops to take over the shows, so that’s kind of how we’re levelling the playing field. JIM PAN (TUNER GALLERIA): The experiences learned from leading TWC (TUNINGWERKS COMPETITION) on the national car show circuit provided practical insight on event production. Competing at the highest levels through these various car shows since 2002 allowed me to take the best practices from these shows and implement them into Tuner Galleria. We now have the unique opportunity to do things the way they should be done. For example, politics, especially within the judging panel, is something we strive to avoid. We’re sensitive to the fact that politics happen in car shows; it’s natural for there to be friendships and possibly alliances between judges and competitors. One of the ways we try to circumvent that is by not hiring local judges whenever possible, to avoid the drama. It would save us thousands of dollars in travel, hotels, airfare, etc., to hire local enthusiasts to judge. There are qualified local car guys capable of judging in every city. Literally, we fly all of our judges from L.A., guys

CREATING EMOTIONS Designed by Robert Zeff exclusively for ARC Audio

THE DEBUT OF THE NEWEST GENERATION OF XDI AMPLIFIERS IS A TESTAMENT TO THE OUT OF THE BOX THINKING IT TAKES TO CREATE THE NEXT “BIG THING” IN CAR AUDIO. The concept of having raw power, reliable performance and sonic purity combined into a single affordable amplifier design for many was a only seen as a dream. Well it’s time to make that become to reality. With a simple and yet creative concept of designing a new full range digital amplifier line ARC Audio has taken a technical and creative direction to innovating a new approach to “Quality” and “Hi-End” without any of the compromises found in today’s full range digital amplifier designs.

RANK AND FILE “It’s not enough to just excel in one or two categories if you want to win. You need to excel in every category.” ~ Neal Woon-Fat (former Importfest head judge) that have been with me on [Team] TWC or that I’ve known from the industry. These guys understand the way I see things and the level of detail that I look at things. First and foremost, they are car builders themselves. I think that’s a critical piece. Consistency is the key word here. In Chicago, the judges that we bring out have been with me since 2009 when we started Tuner Galleria, so the expectations are clear. We also assign one judge per car category. That’s a simple way to eliminate issues with differences between judges in how they score. [For some shows with a long history], the emphasis is really no longer about the cars and the judging; they’re more concerned with producing a lifestyle event which is important, but loses focus on the true car competitor. For Tuner Galleria, we believe a car show should be about the cars first and foremost. As car builders ourselves, we understand the money, the effort, the time, the sacrifices we make to get our cars to a certain level. Out of respect to our competitors, we believe judging is the most critical part of a car show. We want there to be immense pride for competitors who win at our car shows, for the victory to really mean something. PASMAG: What are some of the key areas to look for in judging a car? NWF: As mentioned, this will vary greatly depending on the show. 68

For example, a sound audio show will be focused on audio where as a fitment show will be concentrated on wheels and suspension. Shows like ImportFest encompass the whole tuner industry and try to take into account everything, but even when I was at ImportFest we took great time into looking at styles that were trending and where the industry was going and changed key areas that we were looking for respectively. It’s important for competitors to understand the show they are competing in. With Importfest representing the industry as a whole, one key aspect is that the car needs to be well-rounded. I’ve seen this mistake several times where competitors didn’t realize there were multiple categories on a score sheet, like body, motor, audio and suspension. It's not enough to just excel in one or two categories if you want to win. You need to excel in every category. RD: It’s different with the European scene because it’s not as flamboyant as the import scene — you don’t have people coming around with giant wings or lights so, for example, the Europ guys will convert their car to, let’s say, not just a European version of that car, but they’ll have a mostly French version. The modifications are so subtle that unless you know, you’ll just overlook it. That’s why it’s important for us to talk to the owners to see what they did and why they did it. It helps us get a better sense of what the car’s all about. We’ll look if the interior’s been modified, and whether the engine has been modified. Sometimes they’ll do a shaved engine bay. Right now, the whole stance scene is big, but a lot of people don’t do it. But they’re building their own wheels now for example, so we check if they built their own wheels, if they bought them, how well the whole car pulls off the look. JP: We have a judging score sheet that is segmented specifically into the different categories of the vehicle. They are broken down into every category possible, from

engine performance to exterior/ interior, undercarriage, suspension, brakes, audio/video, etc. It’s a very well-defined breakdown. In determining the winner, it’s very simple: the car that scores the highest is the car that wins. Realistically speaking, car shows are about visual features — the eye candy. However, we believe in functionality as well. Looking at our score sheet, we have the same emphasis on exterior mods and engine performance. It has to be a complete balanced build. PASMAG: What are the big trends right now and what do you see in the future? NWF: Right now, I see the emphasis on stance as being the largest factor at the moment in judging. Stance has always been there and, in the early 2000s, is what really made one car stand out from the other, which might have been almost identically modified. I see functionality coming back, I see the fat, meaty tire look coming [back], but the biggest trend I see is air ride. The capability of air ride and its progress — I see it eventually eliminating the traditional spring/shock coil in all applications. RD: I’ve noticed the whole scene has been moving away from being flashy and in your face to being just more functional. A lot of people don’t really put wings on their cars; they don’t do these things anymore. I’ve noticed that even in the Volkswagen scene; people are just going more toward subtle modifications. The events that are able to adapt and keep up with the times are the ones that are getting more attraction. If you’re talking about Waterfest versus H2O [International], H2O has ballooned over the years, partly because of the community that helped move it along. They have air ride meets and stance meets, versus Waterfest, which doesn’t have that. So we’ve tried to incorporate a bit of those things with Eurokracy. JP: From an overall trend perspective, stance, classic Japanese cars

and bolt-on wide fender kits are what I see as being popular these days. In the show scene, gone are the days of building full show cars, especially with all the crazy fiberglass for interior and audio. Kids now aren’t building their cars in the same way we were building them when the car show scene itself was extremely competitive, all the way up to 2005-06. From 2007 onward, with the downturn of our U.S. economy, things changed dramatically for the scene. Now kids are happy buying replica parts or whatever they can obtain the cheapest. They are upset if they don’t win competing against a similar car with authentic parts. It’s just a whole different thing. For us, supporting manufacturers that continue to spend countless dollars on research and development is important. This innovation is what drives our industry forward. We believe in authentic, quality parts and feel strongly that car competitors should understand the difference. For the future, it is my hope that other car show series can come back to the roots, hosting events where cars are the focus and judging is the priority. If all of us in the production of these shows can just commit to that one endeavour — on creating show experiences where winning has meaningful significance and actually matter because the judging is on point. Then I think we will see car shows flourish again. PASMAG: What’s your opinion on the stance trend? NWF: [Stance] is a trend in terms of the extreme fitment. What I mean is that stance has always been here but now, as with every good thing, the scene tends to over do it. I like to draw parallels with the large GT wings from back in the day; the guy next door would get a wing, then the next guy would get one slightly bigger to one-up him, and someone else would get an even bigger wing to up them, always comparing it only to what was done previously, until one day that last wing is so large that they get compared to the original and the whole trend just topples. the ultra extreme cambers I’m seeing now, I can see stance taking the same trip. The bar will move back to functionality. JP: I think stance as it relates to the import scene is definitely unique relative to other car enthusiast groups. Personally, I’m not a fan of that flush look with extreme camber as it’s simply not practical. I still believe that function is most important so, typically, Tuner Galleria is not the type of show that attracts the extreme stance crowd. The extreme stance movement won’t last. When we look at the overall landscape of our industry, it certainly is an interesting blip in our history, but I don’t really see it lasting beyond the next year or two.

PASMAG: What areas of the car would you tell one of your potential show builders to focus on? NWF: For novice builders, have a plan and sketch it out. Then take your time and build your project with quality parts, and make sure they are the proper parts according to your plan. Never settle on parts [that are less than adequate]. RD: Don’t build a car to be famous. Don’t build a car for someone else. You have to build it for yourself. If you build it for yourself and you can show it and talk about it, chances are you’ll have a good chance of winning. If you’re building a car to be famous on the Internet, you’ll have your two weeks of fame, but someone else will come along. It’s just got to be real. If it’s real you’ll do something for yourself and people can follow your story. JP: It has to be a balanced build, with emphasis on exterior and performance mods. My personal style leans towards functionality. It’s great to have an RWB Porsche 993 or 930, but if you don’t have the power to back up those looks, then it’s really not a balanced build. Ultimately, build the car for your own satisfaction, showing off your creativity and sense of style.

show car needs to be balanced. Sure, you can go to a show or a meet with a built engine pushing some crazy numbers that impress, but that’s only one aspect of a build. On the other side of the performance spectrum is aesthetics. Both sides of the equation are needed to really tie a build together, especially one that is being scrutinized by enthusiasts and show judges. A staple for show cars is the good ol’ engine shave and wire tuck. When you roll up to the meet or show to exhibit your creation, you’re sure to get “oohs” and “ahhs” whenever you pop the hood. To achieve this look, the engine

bay has to be totally smooth. This means welding any holes from the factory, welding in new pieces to hide components and make the lines of the bay flow. Oh, and that rat’s nest of unsightly wires scattered all willy-nilly over your bay need to be tucked away in various hidey holes. The usual spots for these are up inside and along the fenders. The battery is usually relocated to some interesting place as well, such as the trunk or even behind the front bumper. Alex Witkin is known for his Subaru Impreza that’s ready for any situation; it’s a race car that looks like a show car. That was the idea behind the latest iteration of the built Subie beast. After being

awarded Best Subaru at Tuner Evolution 2011, but only by the skin of his teeth, Witkin knew he needed to step his game up. To ensure future victories for his WRX, he decided to rebuild it. This involved new paint, new parts and even a right-hand drive conversion. Most notably, though, a large portion of the build was centered on an engine bay shave and wire tuck. Witkin knows this is a necessity in any competition and definitely something that would garner him a few extra points with show judges and fans. Generously, Witkin provided us with the details on how the cleanest of engine bays came to be. This is how it went down.

To start, the engine, transmission, wiring harness and just about everything else was removed from the car. The less left behind, the easier this modification becomes. At this point in the build, the left-hand drive steering, pedal assembly and other lefty essentials are torn out and replaced by the new right-hand drive components, including a new pedal setup, engine cradle and the steering rack and column. Holes in the engine bay are marked as needing to be welded over and shaved. Some new holes are added for wiring purposes, while some sections of the bay need to be replaced entirely. Fabrication work follows to get the initial shape and look of the new engine bay.

“According to Witkin, [the install] took the most time and could not have been achieved without the help of his friends at Andrewtech Automotive, who spent countless hours perfecting it.

The car is then sent to Piper Motorsport where all the planning started to come together. The marked holes are filled, the symmetrical tubs created for the sides of the bay and a new piece of firewall is installed. They take care of some additional touches and the car is primed, shaved and prepped for paint. Plans are then written for the engine, mechanical necessities and the new bay. Brake lines, fuel lines and some initial wiring are taken care of to minimize the work after the paint work is complete.

The install is at the stage where the magic of wire tucking comes into play. Wires and connectors are extended and eliminated not only in the bay, but inside the car. According to Witkin, this part of the build took the most time and could not have been achieved without the help of his friends at Andrewtech Automotive, who spent countless hours perfecting it. With new brake plumbing installed and a fuel system taking shape, the parts are ready to be test fitted in anticipation of the newly shaved, painted and tucked engine bay. STRETCH TIRES Highly debated and often hated, stretching tires are a huge part of the stance movement. Wide wheels with skinny tires stretched to clear the fenders..you get the idea.

POKE Back in the day tucking was everything. Nowadays if your rim ain’t poked proper you may as well go home and ride your bike to the next stance meet.

hat was that?” you may say as they pass you on the streets. You may double take because it really caught your attention, or you might double take because you think their car is broken. You may also think that someone tried to build their own hovering DeLorean from Back to the Future Part II, had a wheel folding malfunction, and now has to drive it to a shop of bewildered mechanics. Whatever your reaction, the car got your attention and that is the main goal of the aggressive fitment movement known as stance. Stance is a term that defines an umbrella of different wheel, tire and suspension setups. The aggressive fitment movement got its kickstart among the Japanese domestic scene. It makes sense, as anything wild and head-turning can usually sourced back to the crazy fun factory known as Japan. But before the Japanese had their hand at pushing the limits, another group had been doing this for years before: race car engineers. In motorsports, lower and wider is key on the track. A lower center of gravity paired with a wide track means better handling. This state of mind has been adopted in many sports cars for the ultimate driving experience. This has further trickled down from motorsports and performance vehicles to the average Joe. Lowering your vehicle and widening its footprint can improve handling and give excellent cornering feel, but the idea of stance, which has evolved from this mindset, has thrown out the race car ideals and adopted the new mantra of “form over function.” Some stanced cars are lowered and modified to the point that driving them is a challenge, and they become more of a show car that turns up to meets than a daily driver or trackable ride. This is where the term “hard-parked” comes in. While I’m sure that the car is hard to park in situations, the label actually means that the car is mostly parked at shows rather than being used for regular or performance driving.

Sometimes looking pretty doesn’t translate very well with function, so stay parked and look hard!

STATIC Screw Bags, that’s too easy! I can achieve the same look with coil-overs, jacks and wrenches. Just don't look at my underbody!

Stance 101.indd 2

Aggressive fitment refers to the extremity of which the wheel is fit to the car and its fitting in relation to the car’s fenders. In the stance scene, the more extreme, the better. Enthusiasts lower the car as far as they can while running wide wheels with negative offsets. Stance is all about pushing the limits of fitment, so negative camber paired with stretched tires are used to fit the wheels as close to (or right up into) the car’s fender. Once your tire is stretched over your wide wheels, you have to decide where that rim lip is going. Are you going for a tuck look and want it hiding in the fender or are you going for poke, where the rim lip is poking just outside? Since there is no such thing as a stance car with inches of gap, the clearance is little to none. While a stanced car is definitely a looker, there are some problems with the fitment phenomenon. Cars that are sold to regular consumers are not race cars. To make the car handle at its best, engineers lower and widen the race car’s stance and reinforce the hubs and bearings, while completely redesigning the geometry of the suspension to compensate. Maxing out your coil-overs and over-cambering is upsetting the factory suspension geometry that the manufacturer feels will provide the best steering response. Messing with the factory setup to such

an extreme degree can leave you with less responsive and less stable steering, while at the same time increasing body roll. While your deep-dish wheels with polished lips might look sweet, you have to worry about all that rubbing without any of that clearance. Depending on the size of the bump or hole you just drove over, your wheels and tires are more susceptible to damage. Damage to your rim, fender and tire sidewall all become causes for concern. Plus your stretched tires mean you can say hello to an increased chance of de-beading, or even blowing your tires. Oh, you’re rocking the camber look? The decreased contact your tire has with the road means less traction. Just some things to think about before you dive in. Of course, the aforementioned issues don’t apply to everyone. To be recognized in the stance crowd, you don’t need to be cambered or run stretched tires on three-piece forged, concave wheels. That’s the fantastic thing about stance; there are no specific boxes to check to fit in with

If you’re low, flush or fitted and snapping necks, you’re good to go.

STANCE FEVER the movement. You don’t have to be Euro or JDM or use a specific brand name or OEM parts. You can slap on any kind of wheel so long as it fills that fender. If you’re low, flush or fitted and snapping necks, you’re good to go. Just be prepared to travel a little slower and deal with the traffic you’ll hold up when you take three years to get over that concrete lip at your favorite drive-thru. If you’re in love with your OEM rims and want to get that illustrious wheel fitment, spacers are a must. If a set of beauty aftermarket wheels are already in your life - depending on the offset you ordered them with - you can use spacers to fine tune the fitment. Wheel spacers and longer mounting hardware push your wheels out to get that nice flush look. While the wheel is mounted, you can measure from the rim lip to the fender and then grab the necessary spacers and extended wheel studs to compensate. Spacers and longer hardware have been known to be unreliable and even cause damage to the hub if you cheap out, so open those wallets to be safe. From there it’s your choice whether you want to go wild and measure outside the fender or keep it clean. Just remember that in some

BENDER Proper offsets and spacers will only take you so far in the stance game. To complete the trifecta of a proper setup, you’re always going to have to resort to some type of fender modifications. Whether it be molded fender flares or a full wide body fender upgrade, most will resort to D.I.Y tactics!

BASEBALL BAT

As primitive as it sounds, at one point this was the only way to roll fenders to get the perfect fitment.

HEAT GUN

A must have, unless you like cracked paint on your fenders. Also don’t hold the gun to close to the metal or else you’ll ruin your paint job.

As legit as it gets. Armed with a heat gun, a fender roller will yield the best results and the cleanest roll if done properly and not rushed.

states it is illegal to have your wheel pushed past your fender, so either extend those bad boys or keep it flush. If you think your new look deserves new wheels, do some homework first. Calculating the correct offsets and wheel widths you need are important to make sure your new purchase isn’t too wide or too offset for your setup. Shaving your calipers and bits of your suspension is not advised, so make sure you compensate for those when you’re shopping for your new kicks. If you use that magical Google machine, I’m sure you’ll be able to find a calculator to suit your needs. Now that we have your wheels ready, we need to get them up to that fender. There are a few ways to lower your car onto those wheels you’ve spaced out, it just depends on how much coin you’ve got. The first and most cost effective is lowering springs. Lowering springs will get you to a set height, but you’re now stuck at that height, which is called static. Getting some sport dampers is a smart buy as well. Stock shocks can’t handle a lower spring they weren’t built for in the first place, and before you know it you’ll be riding on blown suspension. Coil-overs are the next step up and cost a little more, but the gains are well worth it. You get the damper and spring in one, but you’re not limited to just one height. You are still static, but only until you can jack up your car and adjust the height to whatever craziness you desire. This is the most popular choice amongst the stance

The final option – for all you money bags out there – is an air suspension system. Your springs and shocks are replaced with air bags that are fed the appropriate amount of air pressure needed for your desired height, courtesy of an air management system mounted in the rear of your car. Most air systems are programmable, meaning you can preset ride heights for different scenarios and change them on the fly. Be the envy of all your friends by being able to go over speed bumps and get back into

your driveway without using a pair of 2x4s. If you need to go lower, you can decide to camber. Negative camber will move the tops of your wheels inward, allowing them to be tucked inside the fenders. Excessive camber can cause abnormal tire wear and even suspension problems, so make sure you check yourself before you wreck yourself. Stance enthusiasts have learned to drive lower and slower to express their creativity and individuality in tuning. Not many stanced cars are attacking corners or clipping apexes;

instead they’re cruising to meets. Stance is all about standing out and getting reactions. Rides can look fitted and track ready, or wild, low and squatted. They can also look tasteful or just plain ridiculous, but that’s the beauty of the stance community; anyone can do it and everyone is respected. You can think that this is just a silly trend that will soon pass, but as I see it, stance has always been here and just like the cars, it’s not going anytime soon.

OFFSET:

OR SKIP THAT NONSENSE AND GO ONLINE:

With your wheel face down, measure from the bottom of the inside of the wheel, straight up to the rim lip. Then, measure from your hub, straight up to the rim lip. Take both of your results and convert to mm if not already. Divide your bottom to lip measurement by two. Subtract your hub to lip measurement from the resulting number. This is your offset.

EXAMPLE:

BOTTOM TO LIP = 11" HUB TO LIP = 7" 11" = 279.4 MM 7" = 177.8 MM 279.4 2 = 139.7 139.7 - 177.8 = -38.1

Sure, there may be people who just don’t care as much, they don’t care about the work that goes into building one of these cars, so long as they have it as their new iPhone background. Getting to the point where you’re recognized and “fitted” is not an easy journey. Achieving it isn’t as simple as buying cookie cutter parts, tossing them on, and calling it a day. This takes sacrifice – love, blood, sweat, tears and some major expenses. But how do you get to that point? Let’s take a look at VIP Modular. These guys have more than 15 years of automotive industry knowledge and experience. In 2004, they started the noble pursuit of giving enthusiasts exactly what they wanted. Sure, they have

collections of ready-to-order wheels, but where VIP Modular really shines is in its commitment to customization. VIP’s main goal is to provide ultra-high-quality wheels that reflect not only the car, but also the owner – with zero compromise. If you’ve got a crazy idea for some crazy wheels, these guys more than have you covered. It just so happens that Chris Naguit of MFest fame has some wild ideas of his own, and approached David Nguyen of VIP Modular to build the wheels of his already eye-popping, neck snapping “Salbaje” BMW M3. VIP was more than happy to oblige. Let’s say you’re like Chris and want a fresh set from VIP. How do you go about it? Here’s a step by step of how your cash turns into flash.

Go as nuts as you need to with widths and offsets. Twopiece? Three-piece? Whatever you want, friendo. VIP will treat you like its namesake. After slapping his own stacks on the table, Naguit decides to go for VIP Modular's elite brand RSVforged in a 19-inch, three-piece concave setup. For high performance customers that demand the sportier crafted wheels, VIP Modular offers the RSV brand with a thin, suspended spoke design. The final product will measure out at 19- by 10-inches wide with a -15 mm offset on the front axle, and 19- by 12-inches with a -50 offset in the rear. Damn. Naguit is also thinking the matte blue finish contrasting against his orange exterior will make his car pop even more than it does now. Oh, do we ever agree.

Now that VIP has your specifications, it’s off to work they go. They start with the wheel center. One of VIP’s modular wheel craftsmen starts with a 130-pound piece of 6061T6 forged aluminum. After staring intently at the hunk of metal like Michelangelo finding the image of his next sculpture, he gets his lathe on. It takes about an hour per side to get the wheel center profile from flat to concave. Some food for thought when you think all wheels are made equal.

The Michelangelo stage is over and now your custom wheels are passed over to a VIP Van Gogh. With the center machined and looking pretty, it’s time to make it a showstopper. Cleaning the wheel involves polishing and delicate brushing prep work by hand. The centers are then powdercoated and baked for another two hours at 380- to 400-degrees Fahrenheit. When the cookies are done, your smoking wheels come out and cool for about an hour before being blasted with whatever killer color you’ve picked from their extensive pallet.

6

The wheels are now in bits and pieces, prepped and ready to become a two- or threepiece setup, depending on your preference. From here, the craftsmen hand assemble each wheel (are you really even surprised at this point?), checking painstakingly for quality and fitment. Before the forged center, outer barrel and inner barrel can become one, a craftsman hand applies your selected hardware in whatever finish you see fit. Whether you choose polished, black, bronze, or gold, you can bet they’ll set off the look when holding those barrels together. Now that the wheel is put together, it is polished, brushed and wiped by hand before going for testing. Once it meets the ultra-high standards and rolls true like it should, these masterpieces are packed up and ready to sit on some studs. Once all is said and done at the machine portion, that 75-pound slab of aluminum has become a beautiful 12-pound pièce de résistance. Your wheels went on The Biggest Loser so that you can be the biggest winner.

7

You’ll either get a knock on your door or you’ll show up at the shop, but either way you’re going to get excited like a kid on Christmas morning. The box is opened and you finally see the beauty that all your money and all VIP’s hard work went into making. You might also want to have another cry (this one is a little more accepted). It’s guaranteed you’ll be satisfied because these wheels are completely yours; they’re custom made for by you, for your car. If you’re anything like Chris Naguit, you’ll be over-the-moon stoked about rolling works of art being mounted on your ride. 88

WHEEL

ACCESSORIES

BUYERS GUIDE Picking the perfect set of wheels for your ride is important, but it doesn't stop there. Whether you want to achieve the perfect stance, or just feel like adding some color and style, there are plenty of options.

H&R

TRAK+ Wheel Spacers Contact for pricing | optionsauto.com

H&R TRAK+ Wheel Spacers move your wheels and tires outwards so they are more flush with the fender—instantly giving your vehicle the perfect stance. TRAK+ Wheel Spacers are manufactured from a special proprietary alloy specifically developed for H&R that is lighter and has a higher tensile strength than 6061-T6 billet aluminum. They are hubcentric and feature a full contact hub for even load force distribution and lateral support.

McGARD

SplineDrive Lug Nuts $19.64 (set of 4) | shop.mcgard.com

A no-compromise design, McGard SplineDrive nuts are engineered to fit in small-diameter recesses in aluminum wheels for a tight, clean look. They offer closed-end caps, maximum grip, more stud attachment and a greater seating surface than socket-style lug nuts, and they’re 30% lighter. The chrome plating is guaranteed for life not to rust, chip or peel. Available in bright chrome, gold, black and anodized red or blue aluminum trim.

MISHIMOTO

Aluminum Competition Lug Nuts $125 | mishimoto.com

Mishimoto lug nuts are crafted from high-quality 7075 T6 aluminum, which offers the advantages of high strength and minimal weight. The open-end design allows for use on standard and extended studs, and the knurled ends allow for quick threading. The durable threads allow for reliable and repeated installation. Includes 20 lug nuts. Each lug nut is crafted from a CNCmachined extruded aluminum billet, which provides the highest possible precision and quality. Available in anodized black, blue, red, and gold and include a lifetime warranty.

ARP

Extended Wheel Studs Contact for pricing | optionsauto.com

ARP's head-treated 8740 chrome moly wheel studs are a much-needed replacement for any car engaged in oval track or drag racing competition. They have a tensile strength of 200,000 psi and are able to easily handle loads (shear) and lateral forces (elongation) found in racing. The studs are sold in packs of four or five and are cadmium plated for extra durability. Nuts not included.

4

LOCATION: MINNEAPOLIS, MN MEASUREMENTS: 32C-24-36 HEIGHT: 5’6” ETHNICITY: FILIPINO / NATIVE AMERICAN / CAUCASIAN / AFRICAN AMERICAN ZODIAC: PISCES

Q&A STRENGTHS: I’d say my one major strength is the ability to pull off so many different looks! Being multiracial, I have an advantage over other models when it comes to portraying different looks.

DREAM CAR: I love, love, love – and everyone thinks I’m lame for this – Ford Fusions and Range Rovers! All white baby! There is something so classy about a white vehicle, and the new models of those cars. I am truly in love.

FUTURE PLANS: Hopefully, I’ll be a Playboy Playmate! I am aiming high with that one, but I have my first feature with Playboy Plus [scheduled]. I am beyond pumped!
