TO WIN COMPETITION BRED 16 WAY REBOUND AND COMPRESSION ADJUSTABILITY The HSD MonoPro coilover is exactly what the performance tuning scene has been crying out for. The MonoPro series coilovers offer the most features and the best quality for under $1350. HSD Coilovers use a Monotube damper design favoured by high end suspension companies and each kit is TUV approved. This level of quality and performance is usually found on much more expensive suspension products.

HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS

Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twintube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

A very wide range of height adjustment is possible without affecting the spring pre-load or the damper stroke length. So whether you want sporty or totally slammed, you still get the full performance of the damper.

FULLY ADJUSTABLE DAMPING

Our 16 Stage damping adjustment allows quick, easy and accurate control of the damping so you can tune it to suit your style and setup. Set to soft for your daily drive, then quickly switch to hard for track days or competition use.

PILLOW BALL TOP MOUNTS

Our coilovers come with Anodised Aluminium top mounts with integrated heavy duty noise-free pillowball bearings all round. A wide range of camber adjustment is included on front strut models.

The all new

We are proud to introduce the VF / Series made with flow forming technology, a unique approach to wheel manufacturing. The flow forming process maintains the integrity of the design while improving grain-structure of the aluminum, creating a stronger, thinner, and lighter forged-like rim barrel. Flow forming is the answer to the market’s demand for lightweight wheels that are more durable and enhances overall vehicle driving performance.

ISSUE PREVIEW

BRINGING THE W

elcome to the latest issue of Performance Auto & Sound. That’s PASMAG for short. If you’re looking for the inside scoop on the newest tuning parts and accessories, the coolest modified custom vehicles, the trendiest mods and the latest and best events, you’re in the right place. Once again, we’ve assembled a jam-packed lineup of exclusive features, stories, interviews, insider views, project builds, car audio test previews, competitor profiles and a whole lot more you don’t want to miss. As always, we highlight the latest and hottest products in the industry, so make sure you take note so you can make an impact at the car meets. Still looking for a little inspiration? Check out our trending section where we take the hassle out of picking through the show albums and just give you the best of the best. We have a spotlight on the 28th annual Spring Break Nationals so you audiophiles and custom car nuts can judge for yourselves and see what you’re missing out on. Our expert columnists make their triumphant returns to let you know what’s what in the industry. How do I go about tackling motorization in my builds? I only have so much space for my audio project; what do I do? Am I still tuning for myself? If any of these questions

HEAT! are keeping you up at night, we have the answers. PASMAG is also very excited to be chronicling an extensive “Ground Pounder” Hummer H2 audio build. Better run for cover because this thing will make you think there’s an earthquake. For our continuing Legends series, we turn the attention to Motohide Miwa, the founder of Club 4AG. Most of you who drive a modified Toyota are probably jumping for joy right now. If you don’t know about Miwa and 4AG, you soon will. For you gear heads, especially Toyota enthusiasts, prepare to dig yourself into a revealing interview with one of the forefathers. When choosing the feature vehicles for this issue, we must have had a lot of cash and no compromise on our minds because these cars are downright nuts. We kick things off with Tyler Pflanz’s +1,000 hp Toyota Supra. Tyler is well-known in the scene these days and rightfully so. He made a huge splash in our Tuner Battlegrounds competition last year with his fire-breathing A80. We’ve also got Mark Buffington from Team Hybrid and his low-mileage Mitsubishi Evo 8, which should deliver its message with looks alone. When an enthusiast gets their hands on their dream car, there is absolutely zero compromise and this is shown through and through on this build. On the mobile audio side of the ledger, those crazy guys over

at 360 Fabrication must have watched a mafia movie marathon because their newest creation – dubbed the “H8R” – is what gangster dreams are made of. Sweet ride? Check. Brass knuckles? Check. After work booze? Check. In the competition arena, the Tilton Mitsubishi Evo 9 World Time Attack car is a total horsepower monster from the other side of the pond with more detail in its nooks and crannies than a good number of show cars. As a new addition to PASMAG, our editors weigh in on the everpopular Scion tC with the introduction of OEM tuner test drives. These ongoing featurettes will highlight tests of some of the industry’s most popular tuning platforms and pick apart their tuning potential for any budget. Lastly, the Tuner Battlegrounds Garage will showcase some of the latest challengers to enter the competition. If you’re thinking of entering for a chance to show your ride at SEMA (and you should!), it’s a great opportunity to scope out who you’ll be up against. If all that doesn’t get you hot under the collar, we don’t know what will. This thing is hot so throw on some oven mitts, crack open some PASMAG and get excited for summer. We know we are. See you at the shows.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM ZILLIN

Facebook: /adamzillinphotography Twitter: @7Tune Website: www.7tune.com

"When someone builds, tunes or develops a car, who are they doing it for? Themselves or others?"

20

PASMAG

Not long ago, I watched Dan Pink’s motivational TED talk from 2009 with great interest. In it, he asked listeners to consider whether or not we are motivated by intrinsic or extrinsic influences. Are we motivated by money, benefits or bonuses (extrinsic), or by change, vision and being autonomous (intrinsic)? Look it up on YouTube, it’s a great watch. The conclusion was that people motivated by intrinsic values often produce better quality results; and that led me to a really interesting thought. When someone builds, tunes or develops a car, who are they doing it for? Themselves or others? I suppose it depends on your perspective. If you’re an actual tuner or developer, you’re creating a product or service for consumption. It’s your job to grow the carrots. If you’re a guy building your own car, products are readily available to be bought and built according to your desires and budget. You’re the one buying the carrots. The question is who are you doing it for? I think a great number of people act extrinsically to build something that appeals to others. They build because there’s a carrot hanging at the end of a stick. They build for social

appeal. They build to be accepted. They build to fit in. They aren’t building for themselves. They aren’t building for speed or times or function. There’s plenty of evidence in social media to suggest this. Day after day, on multiple pages, I see countless people harboring resentment and grudges because their car wasn’t “liked” on Facebook and received negative feedback. Why do they care? Because they want their builds to appeal to others. I’m not talking about form or function here, but something psychological. The opinions of others have begun to matter so much in automotive circles that any negative opinion is taken directly to heart, considered insulting, and results in a furious defense from not only the owner, but his or her friends as well. The whole “I love my haters” counterculture has sprung directly from this. But what gets me is that it isn’t necessarily hate; it’s a disagreement. It’s a debate. I don’t like stance or even the notion of it. You can disagree with me and tell me to my face, but don’t confuse my opinion with my right to express it, whether you agree or not. What I find most amazing is hater counterculture has even been given plenty of fuel. Movements have popped up around it. Insecurity is everywhere and is being fostered in the mainstream. How has this happened? It’s the carrots. When enthusiasts stop chasing them and start realizing that the carrot doesn’t really matter at all, they’ll start spending more time at the track, in the hills or in the shed, instead of worrying about the opinions of others.

Tuning Insider

"I came across an insane-looking CR-V with a turbocharged B18C and R34 GT-R front end conversion. It is all-wheel drive, makes 500 horsepower and is totally bonkers."

If people get so upset over opinions, then why do they ask for them? If people say opinions matter so little to them, then why do they get so upset when someone expresses a negative one? To an enthusiast, being intrinsically-minded means to build a car for yourself, not others. And that brings me to Japan. This is the main reason why Japanese tuning circles continue to amaze. Haven’t you ever wondered why or how Japanese cars, vans and trucks can somehow blow your mind? It’s because Japanese enthusiasts build for themselves. They do whatever they like to a car and forget what anyone else thinks about it. That explains why the cars are so wild and unexpected. Diversity rules and differences are tolerated. Everybody wins. 22

PASMAG

Sure there are differences of opinion here, but the way they are handled is different, too. There’s respect even when opinions differ. Instead of a direct approach where someone from a Western culture would say, “This sucks,” the Japanese will instead qualify their difference of opinion in an indirect manner, preferring to say something like, “I’m not sure I like this approach because...” At the HKS Premium day a couple of months ago, I came across an insane-looking CR-V with a turbocharged B18C and R34 GT-R front end conversion. It is all-wheel drive, makes 500 horsepower and is totally bonkers. Now, while I don’t even understand how someone gets an idea like this – it literally made me scratch my head in amazement – when I posted on the car later that day on 7Tune, you should have seen the comments fly. Some were outraged, many were intrigued, and everyone was stunned. And while it made for some comical banter, the overriding point was not lost on me. The owner doesn’t really care about the comments either way; he is proud of what he built and that's the end of the story. Would I build something like that? Not a chance, but I respect the time and effort that has gone into it despite my reservations. The point is the owner stopped thinking extrinsically. There’s a lesson in that for all of us. We should be building for ourselves and not for others. We need to stop caring about what other people say, and above all else we shouldn’t be taking negative opinions to heart. Herb Cohen, a well-known negotiator, once wrote a book called, “Negotiate This!” In it, he extolled the virtue that we should “...care, but not that much.” The Japanese don’t and neither should you.

SOUND ADVICE

BY GARRY SPRINGGAY

CONSIDER THE SOURCE One of the greatest things about the Internet is the ability to access to vast stores of information through a few simple keystrokes. One of the bad things about this access is that there seems to be almost as much nonsense out there as fact. No matter what you’re into – car audio, plumbing or oven mitts – there are interactive forums on the topic. There are few actual experts roaming these forums, but plenty who act like they are. One car audio forum thread, for example, was discussing the gain setting and the tools required for setting it correctly. Some of the comments cited the need for an oscilloscope, a true RMS voltmeter, or a purpose-built, distortion-measuring device. According to these folks, you can’t do anything without these essential tools. Others simply said turn it up until you hear distortion and then back it down a bit. A few advised to “just set it in the middle, that’s average”. The fact is all of these methods could work, depending on a few variables. Let’s think about this for a minute. Have you wondered why an amplifier has a gain adjustment in the first place? The gain pot on an amplifier is there to provide a method of matching your amplifier’s input sensitivity to your source unit’s output voltage. But what does that mean? The output voltage of a head unit is generally the maximum output level the unit can produce in two very specific conditions. First, the volume control needs to be turned up high enough (in some cases at maximum) and second, the signal being played must also be at its maximum possible amplitude. On a CD for example, this condition is known as “all bits high,” or 0 dB. Only when those conditions are met will any source unit make its full output voltage. In terms of music, when we play a song it has naturally louder and quieter points. The difference between the loudest point and the quietest point is called dynamic range. The CD format has a theoretical maximum dynamic range of about 96 dB. Really good recordings can have a dynamic range in excess of 80 dB. Then we have something called crest factor. Crest factor is the difference in dB between the loudest part of the signal, and the average level.

The bottom line is the old adage remains: don't believe everything you read.

24

PASMAG

Music that is intentionally recorded on the loud side (like hip-hop and dance music) has less of a crest factor than an audiophile recording. Have you ever noticed that one CD plays a lot louder or quieter than another at the same volume setting? That’s because of crest factor. With that in mind, let’s go back to our two-volt source unit. If we take a unit with a maximum output of two volts and play a song with 10 dB of crest factor, the average output voltage being fed to your amplifier will be about 630 mV. If you listen to really well-recorded stuff with a higher crest factor, you may find the average signal voltage to be as low as 300 mV. So where do you set your amp gain? If you adjusted it for maximum output with two volts of input signal, you will only get about half of the available power from it with music that has 10 dB of crest factor. The only time the amp will make full power is when the volume is wide open and the music has a brief “all bits high” condition. Because of the crest factor in music, most professional installers set up their amplifiers with a condition known as gain overlap. For example, if the customer has a preference for typical rock, pop, and country music, the amp will be set with the gain about 10 dB hotter than the maximum output voltage of the radio. On our two-volt radio, this would call for a gain setting of around 630 mV. This is why virtually every modern amplifier with an input signal gain range of 200 mV to 4 V is perfectly compatible with head units and pre-amps with up to eight or nine volts of output. The bottom line is the old adage remains: don't believe everything you read. The Internet offers vast amounts of information, some of which is very useful. Just remember to view it with a critical eye, because even the most popular opinions aren't always right.

Jessica Hewitt’s 1993 FD RX-7

HER ROTARY ADDICTION BY MICKY SLINGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA HEWITT

When Jessica Hewitt just was 16, she found herself in love with the Mazda RX-7 and it’s rotary engine. After moving to Texas, she would always end up staring at a beat-up 1987 base model FC RX-7 every day on her walk to school. “It never moved and after seeing it for many months every day, I finally went and knocked on their door asking if they would like to sell it,” recalls Hewitt. “A few days later, I had a reply that they wanted $800 and I could have it.” From 2004 to 2009, a complete restoration was done on the ’87 RX-7, and Hewitt treated it as a hobby as well as a tremendous learning experience. Body, paint, exterior modifications, full driveline and a four- to five-lug hub swap; nothing went untouched. “The brakes were swapped for larger OEM TII, drive ine, axles, rear end, driveshaft, transmission swapped to TII with the TII turbo 13B engine, which I learned how to rebuild,” Hewitt recalls. After the TII conversion, it was onto aesthetics. Once the outside was up to snuff, Hewitt ducked inside to rip out the old

and tired maroon interior and replaced it with a nice, classy black one. “From there I went onto performance mods: turbo upgrade, ECU upgrade, fuel system, etc.” she says. By 2009, Hewitt had a killer little FC that she had built herself. But, in true tuner fashion, it wasn’t enough for long. In 2013, Hewitt got a 1993 FD RX-7 and knew immediately that it would need a lot of work. The suspension was shot and it was riding on narrow 16-inch rims, wrapped in snow tires! Long story short, it took several months for Hewitt to get the car up to her high standards, both inside and out. The car was painted “Big League” blue when she received it, and Hewitt painted the white front bumper to match. A set of Gram Lights 57D 18x9.5-inch, +22 offset wheels were bought and mounted with some 235/40R18 GT Radial Champiro tires slightly stretched over them. After purchasing the Hot Water Labs headlights and RE Amemiya body kit pieces, it was wrapped by Avery Dennison in the color scheme you see here. The transformation from blue FD to purple Rotary Addiction FD took just four weeks. So, after everything she’s put into it, what’s Hewitt’s favorite thing about the car? “My favorite thing about this vehicle is that I created it with my own two hands.”

WHEN HEWITT RECEIVED HER NEW PROJECT, SHE KNEW THERE WAS MORE THAN ENOUGH WORK TO BE DONE.

VERSION 1 OF JESSICA’S FD WAS ORIGINALLY PAINTED “BIG LEAGUE” BLUE.

Rosie Ly may be pure Vietnamese and born in a tent in Malaysia, but living in Australia has made this girl all Aussie, and she has the accent to prove it! In Australia, her modeling career started as a published model in a leading men’s lifestyle magazine. Her breakthrough in North America came at the 2013 SPOCOM Show in Anaheim, Calif. where she was welcomed with open arms (and cameras) by attendees and photographers. Rosie balances being a makeup artist, hair stylist and secretary on top of being a published model. As for future plans, she seems to have them figured out: “Live my fairytale ending that involves taking my yet-to-be chosen soul mate around the world, get rowdy, then eventually settling with a veggie-patch and driving the kids to music class in a bright Volkswagen Minibus.” Can’t get enough Rosie? She’s looking forward to launching her new website (rosiely.com) soon. Keep an eye (or two) out for that to stay in the loop on her next moves!

ALTHOUGH LOWERING A WRX IS VIEWED BY SOME TO BE BLASPHEMOUS CONSIDERING THE CAR’S RALLY-CRUSHING LINEAGE, CAN YOU REALLY HATE SOMETHING THAT LOOKS THAT GOOD? HELLAFLUSH STANCE STRETCHANDPOKE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFFREY LIU, PAUL NGUYEN

HATERS GONNA HATE

To stance, or not to stance? That’s the question that is currently dividing the Subaru enthusiast community. While Subaru purists may argue that performing any suspension modifications on a Subie that isn’t a rally set-up is against the brand’s off-road credo, the stance scene is brimming with slammed and cambered Imprezas, Legacies and even Foresters. Although lowering a WRX is viewed by some to be blasphemous considering the car’s rally-crushing lineage, can you really hate something that looks THAT good? In the end, it’s your car and your money. You can do whatever you want to your ride as long as you don’t hurt anyone else. One side of the argument can stick to conquering the great outdoors, while the other can be parking lot warriors at the shows. Either way, can you really say a Subie looks bad?

RESPECT THE ROADSTER Since the word roadster was first spoken, someone has always taken to calling them chick cars. I think those people were missing out on a real driving experience and now more so than ever. There has been a surge in roadster activity in most scenes and the reaction is super positive, especially surrounding the smallest of them all: the Miata. You’ve probably seen the craziness involving the little guys. Wild 5.0L Coyote and even LS engine swaps have become rampant among the MX-5s, and they have invaded the stance game like a foreign species. They’re even breaking ground in the competitive drift scene with Danny George’s orange camo’d, crab leg-sponsored, badass NB. It looks like 2014 could be the year of the roadster and I’m stoked.

BIG COUNTRY LABS

Big Country Labs was founded in 2011 by two idiots who wanted giant wings for their stupid cars. This was the result. That is the honest and awesome description provided on the website of the guys at Big Country Labs. Sure, they may be silly, but their wings are serious business. Right now, their Atmosphere Demolisher wing kits are offered for the S13 and S14, 350Z, SC300 and FC and FD RX-7. That doesn’t mean you can’t get crazy on your own and make it work for your ride. We’ve seen EVOs, BMWs and WRXs rock these wings with pride. The kits come with all end-plates, brackets and hardware, and are offered in flat and corner mount with “Manly” or “FD Legal” set-ups. Crunk your trunk!

FRANKENSTEINSWAP

If you’re lucky enough to own a Honda S2000, you already know this car is a bit of a money pit. While already being one of the most expensive used cars in its segment, S2Ks are also renowned to be pretty expensive when it comes to engine modifications. The F20C heart of the S2000 is known to suffer from rather un-Honda-like reliability issues as well. So, what’s the solution? The best thing since the B-Series and sliced bread: the K-Series. An increasing number of S2K enthusiasts are taking this route to not only save some well-earned cash, but also to make better gains. K20s are cheaper to tune and pretty much indestructible. Don’t be surprised if you keep seeing more and more AP1s with K20As beating under their bonnets.

KENNY RETIRES A

MASTERPIECE

KENNY MADE HIS FIRST PASMAG FEATURE APPERANCE IN OCTOBER 2008!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC EIKENBERRY

This Civic Si has been around the world and back. Not literally, but it’s seen more shows, won more awards and garnered more fanfare than most can ever dream of. It graced our October 2008 cover in a completely different form, and now, it rides into the sunset for a comfortable and well-deserved retirement. Kenny Vinces bought this beautiful

Si when he was just 18 years old to replace his money pit of an RX-7. Little did he know his pet project would go on to win over 300 awards. Twelve magazine covers including five internationals, a Top 10 at SEMA, and undefeated since 2008, it’s the car he taught himself bodywork on, the car he learned to build audio with, the car he met his wife in, and the same one

which he used to pick up his three daughters after they were born. “I feel blessed and have decided to retire it at its his stage,” Vinces said. Asked if he’d ever consider selling it, he says, “Never! This car and I have history and have been through so much that I consider it family.” We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves.

#NONOCARE CARE HOOD

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL WATSON, KEVIN CHOI

We’ve all seen them. At shows, meets, and even on the road. Driving. Without a hood. Who would ever do that? People who have ridiculous engines, that’s who! It not only shows off a clean piece of mechanical mastery, it helps photographers capture the best photos of your ENTIRE car without having a hood prop in the way. What better way to give your engine the right kind of attention, while confusing the hell out of people who just don’t understand?!

IN IASCA BASS BOXING, THERE WERE WORLD RECORDS SET IN EVERY CLASS AND IN SEVEN CLASSES OF THE IDBL COMPETITION.

SPRING BREAK NATIONALS OCEAN CENTER, DAYTONA BEACH, FL

S

pring break is always loud in Florida, but nowhere is it louder than at the Spring Break Nationals in Daytona Beach. The 2014 edition aimed to shake the foundation of the Ocean Center and, with over 61 mobile electronics brands present and three independent zones to please all factions, the 28th running of the “World’s Most Famous Soundoff” delivered. The newest addition to SBN this year was the Audiophile Zone. This area featured the unnatural quiet needed to truly experience these extremely defined sound system designs. With close to 200 guest enthusiasts lending their ears to the experience, the new showcase proved more than successful. “The Audiophile Room was a great place to intently listen to a high-end sound system,” says Ben Vollmer of Audition Audio, who was showing an updated version of his classic 1988 Acura Legend. The Sound Quality Zone was home to industry manufacturers, distributors and dealers. SBN drew thousands of guests to interact with hundreds of the biggest names in the automotive sound industry for insight and advice. Along with the displays and exhibits showcasing the newest in trends and technology, the Tuner Jam show cars were also on full blast. Of course things got noisy, but within a reason44

able amount. A new mandate this year was a noise level of no more than 95 dB in the SQ Zone. There were a few infractions from time to time, but not having to scream at clients was well worth it for the exhibitors. The allotted 100,000 square-foot Sound Pressure Level Zone made sure all that space was put to good use. DEMOZ competitions featured BASSHEADS and Hair Tricks, who entertained the audience with sound system tricks and demos. They were showing off the newest trend, called “floating,” which is exactly as it sounds; just crank your subs and float objects on the bed of air created by the fast-moving air currents created by the bass! Sound pressure levels were also put to the test by competitions hosted by IASCA Worldwide, dB Drag Racing and MECA associations. In IASCA Bass Boxing, there were world records set in every class and in seven classes of the IdBL competition (check out the standings chart to see the new records set by the best). In IASCA Sound Quality competition, high scores

MECA saw incredible feats of its own with Team Incriminator’s Craig Butler setting the highest sound pressure score with 181.5 dB – the highest in MECA competition history. Ridi added to his award tally by earning the MECA SQL Best of Show trophy with highest scores in the Sound Quality, Install and RTA Frequency Output categories. “There were well over 300 vehicles competing at the event this weekend,” says Moe Sabourin, Director of Operations for IASCA Worldwide. “Between the Sound Quality competition going on at the South Plaza and on the show floor, the SPL and DEMOZ competitions in the exhibit hall, and the IASCA Tuner Jam car show all over the venue, there was plenty to see and do. We’re very excited about the turnout, and happy to say that the majority of competitors at the event said it was the best SBN show in years.”

"I’D RANK THE SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE OF THIS AMPLIFIER IN THE UPPER ECHELON OF CAR AUDIO AMPLIFIERS" GARRY SPRINGGAY TECHNICAL EDITOR PASMAG

CREATING EMOTIONS Designed by Robert Zeff exclusively for ARC Audio

THE DEBUT OF THE NEWEST GENERATION OF XDI AMPLIFIERS IS A TESTAMENT TO THE OUT OF THE BOX THINKING NEEDED TO CREATE THE NEXT “BIG THING” IN CAR AUDIO. The idea of having raw power, reliable performance and sonic purity all in a single affordable amplifier design is just a dream for many. Well it’s time to turn the dream into reality. With a simple, yet creative concept, ARC Audio has taken a new approach to “Quality” and “Hi-End” innovation without any of the compromises found in today’s full-range digital amplifier designs.

“At the end of the day, there is no denying that this is unquestionably a lot of woofer for the money. I find the Memphis Car Audio SRX12D4 to be a surprising performer, and a woofer that, when in the right enclosure, just might prove to be all you really need. Sure, there are woofers that handle more power or have more exotic construction, but with this one you’ll save enough cash to fill your car with fuel and spend some quality time rolling down the highway listening to your tunes. On that note, I suggest you roll over to your local Memphis Car Audio dealer and check these subs out for yourself. You won’t be sorry.”

From $4,613.99 | vortechsuperchargers.com

$ 1 4 ,74 9 . 9 9 | g o a p r. c o m

The APR Stage III+ TVS1740 Supercharger System adds roughly 40% more horsepower and torque across the entire power band. The results are nothing short of amazing, taking the RS4 from 414 horsepower to 626 on pump fuel and 688 on race fuel! With more than 500 lb-ft on tap thanks to the TVS1740’s positive displacement supercharger, expect instant acceleration without the lag commonly associated with other forms of forced induction.

Designed specifically for the FA20 engine, the Vortech system outperforms all other types of forced induction for the GT86 platform. Where other brands fall flat at the top end or have boost lag, the Vortech centrifugal system compliments the existing powerband for more power everywhere and no heat soak! Easily upgradable, make even more power without major changes to the supercharger head unit. System includes a V-3 H67B supercharger and is air-to-air intercooled.

In factory form, Audi’s S5 4.2L FSI V8 leaves much to be desired compared to recent S models. The APR Stage III+ TVS1740 Supercharger System fills the void by adding roughly 45% more horsepower and torque across the entire power band. The results are nothing short of amazing, taking the S5 from 353 horsepower to 589 on pump fuel and 635 horsepower on race fuel without breaking a sweat!

DEATSCHWERKS V2 DW300 FUEL PUMP $169 | deatschwerks.com The new DW300 pump flows 26% more at its peak and 20% more on average across all pressures. Increases in flow were specifically engineered for high pressures (60-90 psi), where forced induction applications need it the most. Fuel flow has been limited at low pressures (30-50 psi) to minimize heat generation in return fuel systems. This dual zone approach results in a flatter flow curve, which maximizes both performance and reliability for supercharged or turbocharged applications. E85-compatible and includes a three-year warranty.

TUNING

STOCK TO STACKED

THE 2014 SCION TC O F F E R S A G R E AT F O U N D AT I O N FOR BUILDERS

BY JORDAN LENSSEN

Few automakers offer a platform with as many tuning and customization options as Scion does with its tC coupe. Sure, the Honda Civic created the mold more than 20 years ago, but long gone are the days where there are no other options. Today, Scion is a preeminent brand when it comes to customization at an affordable price. For 2014, the tC is even more attractive to prospective buyers and builders. Complete with a new, aggressive design, the $19,965 (US MSRP) starting point for the manual transmission model means you can afford to spend a pile of cash on parts and accessories to build it exactly the way you want. It was the car of choice for last year’s Scion Tuner Challenge, and all three competitors showed just how versatile the tC really is. In the end, it was Young Tea's well-rounded build that won the award at SEMA. I recently had the chance to test the car for the first time and it gave me a fresh new perspective of what buyers might consider if they’re planning on a build, big or small. There are a few key things I noticed when I tested it. First, the restyling is fantastic: it’s bold, aggressive and offers a different aesthetic from many of the cars on the road. It’s a coupe that looks like a small sedan, and there are a ton of accessories for it.

Looking to build a pocket rocket? The 2.5-liter 2AR-FE might have just 179 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque in stock form, but with large displacement and 16 valves going into four cylinders, there’s plenty of potential. Turbos, cold air, controllers – there are a ton of options already with more to come. Inside, the styling offers an excellent starting point. Leave it stock or follow the lead of the Scion Tuner Challengers and spec it however you want – from micro VIP to full-on

racer. The double-pane split glass sunroof is a rarity in the compact segment and there’s also rear legroom for days - perfect for friends or stacking a massive audio wall, or whatever option you choose. Back up front, the double-DIN touch screen head unit is a nice addition to the car, and while it’s disappointing Scion didn’t include navigation or satellite radio (available with an extra accessory) as standard equipment except for the rare 2,500 unit Monogram edition, it will likely be one of the first things you swap if you take your audio seriously. Having a removable double-DIN option is a bonus these days. Where the head unit shines is phone and audio, enabling you to dial and select phone numbers and select songs and playlists right on screen. In practice, the OEM Bluetooth stereo sounds great as stock, but as someone who has also driven the FR-S, the tC suffers from Scion’s dreaded bass-dead rear zone; the

meat of the low end is packed into the front speakers. You could use a dedicated amp and subwoofer to solve your issues, or go shopping and pick up the system you really want. It’s a small price to pay for a well-rounded package. Thankfully for us proper-shifters, the manual transmission comes standard. The automatic is available for an additional $1,000, but your best bet is to put your money to good use elsewhere, like a nice flywheel or clutch upgrade, or maybe even a nice dinner! The Scion tC definitely faces tough competition from the Ford’s Focus and Fiesta, the Hyundai Veloster and even the VW Golf, but it also offers styling and configurations that make it vastly different than any of them. For starters it has the biggest standard wheel size (18 inches), and comes an easy second

in the horsepower category if you include the top-level Fiesta ST. If you want more bang for your buck, be prepared to shell out a bit more for a GTI, Veloster Turbo, or Honda Civic Si. Or you can put that money toward making your tC even better. Despite the competition, the tC stands on the foundation of what Scion is – something different. If it’s a clean build you want, we’ve seen examples of that in the past year. If you want a monstrous build, there are few platforms that offer such a creative palette. The high-slung doors, short profile and restyled exterior make the tC a great looking car, and from a builder’s perspective there are too many modifications to list. If you’re testing the waters for your next build – or are just looking for a new daily driver – do some research, see what’s available, and take it for a spin.

MOTORIZATION GIVING YOUR INSTALL A VISUAL IMPACT

Motorization is a scary thing to tackle for many installers and fabricators. Although we have all designed these amazing moving and sliding installs in our heads, very rarely do they become a reality. This is usually a result of either cost or skill set. If it’s cost then you are limited to what you can do, but if you just don't have the skill, then it’s time to learn. The first thing to decide is what type of motorization you plan on installing. There are multiple ways to add motorization, but the three we are covering are: Push/Pull, Lift/ Lower and Open/Close.

• Actuator with pivot mounts at each end

78

PASMAG

PUSH/PULL is typically used for amp racks, pushing out the equipment to expose it, then pulling it back into its space. This type of movement is the easiest to achieve because there are minimal parts required. To achieve a Push/Pull you will need a track, linear actuator, switch and limit switches (optional). There are many places to purchase your parts, but I prefer ServoCity.com whenever I need anything. Their tech support is amazing whenever I need to know things like the load capacity of a motor, or anything else for that matter. Wherever you get your parts, make sure the specs meet your require-

ments, because while they might look the same, they could be very different. Let’s break these parts down so you can become more familiar. DRAWER slide tracks use ball bearings to minimize the friction when sliding open and closed. The less friction placed on the tracks, the easier it will be for the motor to move the tracks in and out. If you see that your motor is struggling to move the piece, add grease to the tracks to help them slide better. LINEAR ACTUATORS generally consist of a DC motor connected to a screw drive through a set of gears. The screw drive is set inside of a tube, which also has screw threads along the inside of the tube. When the motor turns, the screw turns inside the tube and the tube is moved in or out (depending on the direction of the rotation). To reverse the direction of the actuator, simply reverse the polarity of the electrical connection on the actuator. Actuators are available in lengths of travel from just one or two inches (like the actuators used for electric locks) to 36 inches or more. Some actuators have internal limit switches. These switches stop the actuator from travelling outside of its design limits. These limit switches will NOT stop the actuator if what you’re moving runs out of room before the actuator reaches its own maximum travel limit. If the moving piece(s) need to stop before the actuator reaches its limit, add a safety/limit switch of your own. If the actuator has no limit switches, the actuator may spin the output shaft past its design limits. You should always monitor the object(s) being moved when the actuator is activated. When building

When selecting an actuator, choose one that can handle at least 20% more weight than the tension tool stated.

• Bore pinion gear in gear rack

• Squaring up an actuator

a system, keep in mind that linear actuators can easily rip apart amp racks or anything else that isn’t properly designed. To properly control an actuator, you need either a two-way switch or a switch and a couple of relays to reverse the polarity to the actuator so it can both push and pull. Now that we have the basic parts down, how do we know which ones to use? This is where the skill set comes in. There are two variables you must know to correctly choose the components needed. These are the travel distance and weight. The travel distance is the distance between point A and point B that you are trying to move within. This measurement dictates the track length as well as the actuator stroke required. The next variable is the weight of the item you will be moving. All tracks and actuators come in different versions (ie. standard and heavy duty). If your item is very heavy and you use a standard duty track, you will notice it dragging because the track is binding up due

80

PASMAG

to the weight. If you use the incorrect actuator for the job, your movement will be extremely slow and you run the risk of burning out the motor. So, how do you factor in the weight of something that slides in and out horizontally? Well, you can do a whole bunch of math and make yourself feel really smart, or, you can use a trigger tension scale tool. A trigger tension scale is used for firearms. To set the tension needed to pull the trigger, place a hook on the trigger then pull it back until it clicks. The weight displayed will show how much force is needed to pull the trigger. You can do the same with your project by hooking the tool to the edge of your panel and pulling until it begins to move. When it moves, it will show the amount of force needed to move the rack. When selecting an actuator, choose one that can handle at least 20% more weight than the tension tool stated. When it comes to construction, there isn’t anything easier than a sliding amp rack. Look at any drawer and you get the idea – it’s simply a base with at least two sidewalls and tracks attached to each side. Once you have your sliding base to hold your amp(s), place the actuator in the center of the slider, either in front or behind, whatever your design requires. When designing a Push/Pull sliding rack, take into account the body of the actuator and where it is being mounted. Some actuators have very large housings that could affect where/how it will be mounted. Ensure that everything is straight and in line when mounting and attaching the actuator to avoid binding or unwanted resistance. Visit www.pasmag.com/installs/motorization, where I will discuss the other two types of motorization (Lift/Lower and Open/Close) and the proper use of gear motors.

BIG BRUTE PROJECT

GROUND POUNDER PHASE.1

BY GEORGE DIMITRIADIS

People keep asking me, ‘Why? Why are you doing it? What would posses you to tear out a perfectly good build?’ The answer is quite simple. Because I want more!

P

roject Ground Pounder will chronicle the build of this 2005 Hummer H2, nicknamed Brute, from beginning to end. Prior to this project, Brute enjoyed life as a full-blown C-pillar built vehicle with eight 12-inch subwoofers behind the second row of seats that saw the 60/40 bench converted into a pair of buckets seats and custom center console. Powering the system required no less than four 7,500-watt amplifiers on a total of 16 batteries. Of course, keeping up with this took a total of 4,000 watts on a dozen eight-inch midrange speakers with a half-dozen super tweeters to round things out. It was loud – ground-shaking loud! And I’ve been asked many times why it wasn’t enough. People would ask why I wasn’t happy with it. But I was very happy with it and, aesthetically it was perfect. But I just couldn’t shake the tiny voice in my head that kept uttering, “B-pillar, B-pillar.” There’s an old saying that if you’re going to do something, do it right. That being said, Brute has gone under the knife once again! And we are talking a total ground-up overhaul.

MAPPING IT OUT Once my mind was made up, I sat down with some key people to go over the plan. I first met with my good friend John Wolak, owner of Ultimate Autosports in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, to plan what was in store for this unsuspecting H2. Ultimate had a big hand in Brute’s previous build, so it was a no-brainer they would once again be at the helm of this project. Wolak and I mapped out the project the way I envisioned it, coming up with a very short list of companies we were going to work with. First on that list is KnuKonceptz to help us address the wiring needs for the vehicle. From its Kolossus OFC wire to its Krystal RCAs, Kno Knoise sound deadener and array of interconnects, KnuKonceptz is a onestop-shop for professionals and DIYers alike. Up next were the subwoofers and speakers. A meeting was set up with Core Industries. Core is the Canadian Distributor for a wide va-

82

PASMAG

WE’RE OFF TO THE RACES! riety of 12-volt companies, one of which happens to be RE Audio. Nick Cimino, Core’s National Sales Manager, provided invaluable insight and reaffirmed our decision to use RE Audio for the sub stage, and components for the front stage. Naturally, in order to power the front and sub stages, one needs an abundance of amplifiers. At the top of the manufacturer pile was one company: American Bass. Having used them numerous times in the past because of unsurpassed service and performance, my decision was easy. For power and charging, Cimino recommended Ohio Generator, so that’s who we went with. I have used these alternators in the past and had nothing but success with them. As luck would have it, Core also happens to be the Canadian Distributor for Ohio Generator too and, by the end of the meeting, Nick was my new best friend. That’s enough with the introductions already. Let’s get to the meat and potatoes here.

Disclaimer! What you’re about to see may be disturbing to some people. To others it is just another ordinary day in this glorious hobby we call car audio. Once I came to terms with what needed to be done and delivered Brute to Ultimate, the tear down began to make way for all things new. Part one of Project Ground Pounder shows the tear down process, including stripping the vehicle to its bare metal shell.

BIG BRUTE

DEADENING This process alone took more than a week, largely because a full-blown build was already in the shop and had to come out; it was imperative in order to prepare Brute for the sound deadening process. On the advice of Bill and Dan from KnuKonceptz, we used a combination of the 80 mil KnoKnoise Resonance Control and 100 mil Kolossus Edition sound deadener. There are four layers in the rear and seven layers up front, with each door receiving a generous helping of the 80 mil Resonance Control deadener. Kno Knoise has to be the easiest deadener I have ever worked with. The butyl is very pliable, doesn’t need to be heated and the foil backing makes it super easy to work with. My door panels went from tin can rattlers to Fort Knox. This will make

a substantial impact on the front doors considering the amount of abuse they will endure from all of the pressure generated once the bass starts going. Deadening the door panels also helps with the door panel build that will house the abundance of front stage components. I’m fortunate there are sizable openings in the door

panel skins of the H2, which allows for deadener application on the inner portion of the door. Granted, my hands look like they went 10 rounds with a meat grinder when it was all said and done. The pictures don’t do it justice. Once the door panel deadening is complete, the focus shifts to the floor of the passenger cabin.

Most people don’t realize how much abuse the floor of a vehicle undergoes. I have seen firsthand metal tear from excessive wear and flexing caused by low frequency bass music. Since I don’t want to be pulling a Fred Flintstone in the foreseeable future, a healthy application of the 100 mil Kolossus Edition deadener on

800-525

Project Ground Pounder Part1 16.03-June.indd 2

2014-04-25 5:09 PM

the floor from the B-pillar all the way forward and under the dash will ensure that. A total of four layers have been applied to the entire floor to aid in the elimination of flex. Moving to the roof and rear compartment. The former will be deadened once the sunroof has been sealed. In order to seal off a B-pillar wall properly, this must be done, although it isn’t possible because of the sunroof and tracks on the inside of the roof. So, the entire sunroof assembly and tracks will be removed, and I will weld a new bracket to house the sunroof that will be sealed indefinitely. A substantial amount of deadener will be applied to the roof at that time. The rear compartment will also receive a helping of deadener once the battery rack has been built.

WIRING Next is the installation of the charging wires, which run from the alternators up front to the battery bank in the rear. The wire of choice for this install is the KnuKonceptz OFC Kolossus FLEKS 1/0 wire. I opted for black for the ground wire, and the Kandy Kable Yellow for the power runs. (I’ve worked with tons of wire over the years and have to give it to KNU, this is top tier stuff! Besides the very workable housing jacket, the wire is tinned ofc, which provides unparalleled current flow.) Now for the fun part: having to cut the wire, run it and maneuver

the spools. For those of you doing double and triple takes, your eyes are not deceiving you. Those rolls are 500-feet long apiece! I offered a reward of $1,000 to anyone who was able to pick up each roll unassisted and carry it around the shop. When that failed I was relegated to rolling it around. Once the spools were in position, the cutting commenced. One run, two runs, three runs, four runs, five runs, all the way to eight runs of power and eight runs of ground. That works out to 200 feet of power and 200 feet of ground for the alternator charging wire up front.

PERFORMANCE - Xtra technology produces better color contrast and depth perception allowing drivers to see farther. QUALITY – Manufactured to DOT Specifications and backed by a one-year warranty. STYLE – Xtreme white color output with crisp illumination for the HID look. 800-525-7422

GROUND POUNDER PHASE.1

Typically, when you run power and ground wire you do so through the vehicle, under the carpet, and into the back. This is not the case with 16 runs of 1/0 cable. The wires begin under the hood. The eight runs of power wire run from the alternator-fused bracket and down the firewall along the inner driver’s side frame rail. Using a screw-in and insulated metal tie-down, we make sure to secure the power wire to the inner frame rail. All remaining runs of wire are attached to each other using zip ties, running down along the inner frame rail to the rear of the truck. Of paramount importance is making sure to avoid any sharp edges and the exhaust system. Once in the rear, the wire runs into the rear cargo compartment through 4x4-inch holes protected by rubber sleeves which are cut into rear floor cargo area. The same steps have been taken for the ground runs of wire on the passenger side.

QUAD ALTERNATORS With all the charging wire running from front to back, it’s time to move under the hood and perform more surgery with four 300-amp Ohio Generator DR44 alternators. There is nothing like having 1,200 amps of charging current at your disposal. Hats off to Tom Eliopoulos at Ohio Generator for providing such sweet alternators! The first step is to remove the air intake tube while releasing tension on the belt and subsequently removing the belt. From there, the factory alternator is removed along with the lower idler bolts. With the space freed up, it’s time to install the custom quad alternator bracket. The first step is installing the front section of the bracket using longer bolts through the factory idler housing. The rear section of the bracket is then installed with the supplied spacers and bolts. An-

other important thing to account for is the relocation of the ECU and battery under the hood. The H2’s original ECU location is where the furthest right alternator will sit, so it needed to be repositioned about six inches lower and tucked away. The battery has also been relocated to the rear and tied in to the battery bank. To accommodate this, relocation wire runs to the rear and a positive and negative charging post is incorporated in to an ABS plastic platform, which will house a voltage gauge as well.

When it comes time to install the alternators, the first one to go in is the bottom alternator. After bolting it on, it is checked to make sure it is correctly clocked. We move in a counter-clockwise direction bolting on the second, third and fourth, leaving the final alternator loose for the time being. From here the remaining idler pulleys are mounted on to the bracket and the new belt is routed. The fourth and final alternator (which is in the stock alternator housing position) requires the bolt

3:42 PM

be removed to drop it one-half inch and allow for the belt installation. Once this is done, the tension being applied to the factory tensioner can be released in order to finish wrapping the belt around the fourth alternator. With that done, the bolt for the fourth alternator can be installed and secured. With all of the alternators installed, it’s time to check the belt alignment on all pulleys and idlers. This is done by starting the vehicle and making sure the belt does not rub, and letting it idle for

only a few minutes as it is running on battery power. The final piece of the puzzle is the ABS bracket, which houses the KnuKonceptz in-line ANL fuse holders. Using 1/8-inch ABS plastic, we cut it to size (12x10 inches) and give it a slight 25-degree bend. Four waterproof ANL fuse holders are mounted on top with four matching ones underneath, each with a 300amp ANL fuse (of course, the fuse has not been installed as of yet). All wires are terminated with crimped-on 0 AWG ring terminals with two runs of 0 AWG power and ground per alternator. Phase one of Project Ground Pounder is now complete. Be sure to read the full version online at pasmag.com/groundpounderpart1 and stay tuned for the second phase in the next issue of PASMAG.

The automotive specialty equipment aftermarket held its big, annual trade show in Las Vegas last fall. Like so many years before, PASMAG and its team members were in attendance to report on the newest modified vehicles and coolest parts the sport compact tuning segment has to offer. The SEMA show went much the same as years gone by and, by now, we trust you’ve seen our mega-sized coverage. Our editors and photographers scribed thousands of words and took thousands of photos, and we “liked” and “hashtagged” everything from #FordOutFront to #GlobalRallycross to #LibertyWalk, #RocketBunny and everything in between. We made all sorts of new friends; people from Canada, the States and even far off lands. One of them is Xie Yu, a Chinese businessman from Beijing, China, and the General Manager of YASN International, an automotive trade and enthusiast show company. Mr. Xie is a car guy who’s hell bent on taking the Chinese tuning industry to the promised land, which is why he made the trek to Nevada for the big show and went camera happy once he got here. We managed to catch up with Mr. Xie between shutter clicks and sit down with Ruby Yang, YASN’s International Affairs Manager, to get the state of the tuning industry in China, and find out what his car-crazed countrymen are looking to learn from the European and American custom car hobbyists. PASMAG: Can you start by telling us a little about YASN International? Mr. Xie: Yes, of course. YASN International is a trade show organizer based in Beijing, China. We have a history of 12 years, and we focus on aftermarket and the business related to the auto aftermarket. We have three segments to our business. One segment is trade show organization. One of our flagship shows is called the China International Expo for Auto Electronics, Accessories, Tuning & Car Care Products (CIAACE). At the previous edition of CIAACE in 2013, we had more than 6,000 exhibitors on more than 250,000 square meters of space and about 200,000 attendees. That

Currently, there about 5.6 million cars in Beijing and we have about 300 car clubs, and close to 100,000 people who are involved in the tuning industry. Also, in the North of China, people are rich and like to spend money. People in the south of China are also rich, but they spend their money reasonably, not like the people in the north. The people in the north like to show off.

“For the consumer, you need to show them what their car will become, build the dream for them.” includes manufacturers and the channel buyer or distributor, retailers and professional visitors and also a small percentage of the consumers. The first CIAACE show took place in 2005. PAS: I understand you have another show called All in Tuning and 2014 will be its third year. Please tell me more. Mr. Xie: I would like to tell you the history about All in Tuning, which was originally established as a tuning pavilion at the 2005 CIAACE. At that time, the Chinese market share for the tuning industry was only worth about six million yuan, or $125 million U.S. dollars. That grew to $10 billion U.S. dollars in 2012. So, we thought it was an opportune time to start up a separate new show just for tuning in cooperation with Germany’s Messe Düsseldorf (Trade Fair). PAS: Why did YASN want to partner with Messe Düsseldorf? Mr. Xie: YASN has an advantage in the Chinese market with Messe Düsseldorf, which is a top-five exhibition company worldwide. They have international fame that will help us recruit European exhibitors and other international exhibitors. That was improved after our cooperation. The European tuning VDAT and the German transportation ministry said that they are high-level leaders to our show. We believe that is because of the participation of Messe Düsseldorf. As a Chinese exhibition company, we know the Chinese market and we have the resources in China for the industry and also for the government. PAS: Is All in Tuning a trade show or a consumer show? Mr. Xie: All in Tuning is a B2B and B2C show for automotive aftermarket enthusiasts. China is a very big country, and the tuning industry is just in the early stages. We have to promote this industry to Chinese consumers and inform them what tuning is, how to tune your car and what benefits tuning your car can bring. Compared to the CIAACE, the All in Tuning show has an emphasis on B2C. Beijing is the capital of China, and the largest Chinese city for car ownership.

PAS: What kinds of vehicles are on display at All in Tuning? Mr. Xie: The most popular brands in China for tuning are Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota from Japan; from Europe, BMW and VW are popular and have the largest percentage of sales market share. The VW Golf, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus are also very popular for tuning. General Motors are not that popular. There is a higher percentage of Chryslers and a small percentage of Buick. Dodge are just imported from overseas, so [they are a] very small percentage. According to our research, there are about 30 million car owners in China. They are largely satisfied with their current car, but they also would like to personalize their cars and modify them. PAS: How do you see the U.S. companies fitting in at the show? Mr. Xie: First of all, the tuning industry is still in its early stage in China. Many individuals and/or tuning shops don’t know how to properly modify their cars. Secondly, in China, there is no specialty equipment aftermarket. Many American tuning brands sell specialty equipment that are made in China, but in China they don’t sell. It’s not enough to have and sell the products, you need to know how to modify. The U.S. automotive tuning industry has a long history. The U.S. has the sophistication, the technology and the products. From my point of view, compared to the European tuning companies, U.S. tuning companies have more prestige and a high reputation. Chinese people also really like the U.S. style. PAS: And American brands will come to All in Tuning, show the people what they want to have, put on seminars and share some tips and tricks... Mr. Xie: My suggestion to U.S. companies and U.S. exhibitors at All in Tuning is – if you want to be successful in China – you have to do something to influence them. For the consumer, you need to show them what their car will become, build the dream for them. Another is the reference to the tuning shop: how will they do the work to modify? Currently in China, even many tuning shops don’t know how. So, we have to teach them, teach the tuning shop and show the car owners how the dreams for their car can be realized.

Mr. Xie: According to Chinese law, all cars sold by a 4S dealer must be serviced by 4S dealers, so they have the resources for the tuning industry. PAS: What is a 4S dealer? Mr. Xie: 4S dealers, which are very big and very powerful in China, are OEM new car dealers. In order to be considered a 4S, which is very significant, it means they do new car sales, vehicle service (both mechanical and collision service), sell spare parts (repair parts and crash parts) and survey. Survey means they are basically collecting different types of information (mechanical, customer service) from their customers and giving it back to the OEM. The 4S dealers, who are looking for new revenue streams are now looking at dealer installed accessories. PAS: Are there other important issues that we haven’t touched on yet? Mr. Xie: The tuning industry in China has grown very fast over the past few years despite the fact

“Many of the automotive regulations in China today date back 50 years, and the government has not kept up with them.” the government has been slow to react. Many of the automotive regulations in China today date back 50 years, and the government has not kept up with them. But now the government wants to change that because it has seen the massive potential that exists. Currently, the laws are strict with respect to what you can and cannot do to a car. Cosmetic things like paint, vinyl wraps, window tint, wheels, tires and all kind of interior alterations are allowed. After the government changed the regulations for the wheel and tire market, it grew very fast. On the other hand, performance modifications are generally illegal, so there is relatively little

growth in the segment. We are working very hard with the government to come up with rules and regulations to change that. Once the regulations in China are changed, the growth of the performance parts segment will be anywhere from 10% to 20% within two years. PAS: I bet there are a lot of people looking forward to that day! What’s the date for the 2014 All in Tuning show again? Mr. Xie: The 2014 All in Tuning show will take place August 9 to 11 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing’s Olympic Village. And I’m very excited that PASMAG will be there!

MOTO BY ERIC EIKENBERRY | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CLUB 4AG & MOTO MIWA

If you were lucky enough to be born in Japan in the early 1970s, emigrate to California in 1978, and spend most of your formative early years in the front seat of your family’s delivery trucks, you might have developed a healthy interest in motorized vehicles. If you then went on to found and preside over one of the most influential web-based, single-model car enthusiast clubs in the world, you might be Motohide Miwa. He’s been the president and organizer of Club4AG.com for as long as it’s been around, not simply because he does it well, but also because he’s a class act; knowledgeable and humble. He’s ruined the position for anyone who would succeed him so, predictably, no one has.

W

When his interest in vehicles and involvement in manufacturer promotions coincided, he wound up face-to-face with Mr. Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer for the FT86 project, which became the break-out sports coupe hit that both Toyota and Subaru executives were longing for. And it’s all because a young man who had an AE86 Corolla shell once sat down at a computer to type up his thoughts, frustrations and experiences with an ongoing restoration project for that new-fangled World Wide Web. For Moto, as he’s commonly known as, all cars are beautiful things, even those not built by Toyota or powered by a 4-AGE engine. With that in mind, we talked to him about his past, his present and what he thinks of the FR-S as the potential savior of the sport compact car market.

PASMAG: When did you realize you wanted to work with cars in some way? How old were you? MM: I don’t know. My mom tells me I was drifting my walker-roller thing into walls of the house at one-and-a-half. As long as I had a mind, it was [focused] on things with four wheels. I was born in a home in Osaka, Japan next to my grandfather’s noodle factory. Trucks came to pick up noodles starting at 4 A.M. and I would often ride with various drivers on their delivery routes. So, I spent a lot of time in passenger seats of those trucks, and maybe that was an influence. Also, the 1970s was the start of Japan’s economic stability and it is when modern Japanese cars became respectably good, and nice cars were all the rage back then. PASMAG: What was your first project vehicle? Was it a hand-me-down or did you buy it? MM: My first personal car was a 1985 Honda Civic that I bought brand new at age 16. This is before anyone even considered a Civic, or any Honda for that matter, an enthusiasts’ car. But parallel to me customizing things on it, the market grew quickly to embrace things like the first-gen CRX that was new at the time, along with a bunch of other neat cars from Japan. Most people who sort of visited the twisting roads back in those days were Alfa Romeo, BMW, Porsche, and VW owners, and I was sort of the newbie with a neat little Honda that could scoot along competently with these European subcompacts. Those are my roots and my start really, in engaging the public awareness for Japanese cars.

LEGENDS: PASMAG: Why Club 4AG? What struck you as special about the Corolla? MM: In 1993, I acquired a nice shell of an AE86, which, at the time, was relatively unknown to Americans in terms of a performance car since most FWD hot hatches at the time had fancy turbo engines and outran the little AE86. While no one paid any attention, it was one of my targets to build someday and by 1994 it was cheap enough that I could really start to work on one. I probably spent a year taking apart every single nut and polishing, hammering, torching, straightening, reinforcing and just taking my time with this car. I envisioned it as my nice daily driver that’s destined to be so much driving fun. By 1996 a thing called the World Wide Web (or Internet) started to become a project in the computer industry and viable communication media for savvy business folk. Intrigued by how that worked and grew, I basically started to try my hand at creating a website. With my brain not really filled with anything but cars to talk about, I began to sort through what I had on record as tidbits and photos and loaded them into what was called, a “website.” I titled it Club4AG, hoping that somebody who might need this information or simply find my project interesting, would somehow find it and read it. With many big firms now starting to buy domain names like Toshiba.com or Toyota. com, I decided to buy my own called “Club4AG. com” without much thought other than, ‘Why not?’ It cost me I think, $230 at the time, and $50 or something to host a forum each month. Bandwidth was expensive, but curiosity of how the Internet worked really got me involved. By 1998, a fully working website with forums and databases that really could be used by guests was up and running. Each week a dozen or so more people from all over the world would register an account and chime in with appreciation of my work, or simply just to reference stuff I wrote. That dozen became 100 then 1,000 and within a few years it became an online community for 4A-GE powered car owners, and there were folks chatting and discussing many things about these cars. PASMAG: Which sponsors or manufacturers have you had the best relationship with over the years? MM: Falken Tire USA is one of the most notable for us at Club4AG as they have been the resource for much of the larger things we did. It was the deep relationship with Falken

that put us on the map in the corporate world, which in turn enabled us to open doors into other firms for support. In recent years, I’ve been working with development teams at Toyota. One of the most notable being that I had Moto’s AE86 at a SoCal Drift Day event. been lightly involved in the creation of the FT86 since 2007 – something that really fit what I was doing with AE86 all these years, and now thoroughly enjoy as a car to cater the same joys and form the same type of community, 25 years after the last AE86 had rolled off the line, and for a whole new generation of people. The FR-S/BRZ/86 has been almost 100% of what I am doing with everyone, from public events to private development tasks. For that we are going between third-party suppliers, aftermarket firms, consumers, enthusiasts and bridging and translating that colloquial industry language to fit the needs of each niche, department and community in an effective two-way communication.

The little chassis that could, the chassis that launched a worldwide cult following.

LEGENDS: PASMAG: If you could start over again, would you repeat the same process or are there things you would change? MM: I’m not sure. Since this whole thing revolves around the needs that happen with time, and is not based on financial or business goals of any singular manner, I adapt quickly to requests of many kinds. So, I can’t really say I would do it differently. I am sure if it started in another era, things may have been very different, but I am sure that I would have adapted it to what was still fun and basically creates joy for automobile enthusiasts. PASMAG: What advice would you give to a young person who has an interest in building his or her own performance machine? What platform would you consider to be a good start? MM: All I can say is ONE simple thing. Stick with what you enjoy, and never ever veer from it. Things will happen that will make you something extraordinary to others, while the only thing you chased all that time will be just your passion. It’s funny how that works, but if you veer or derail your focus, you waste time on what is important to become someone unusual. And any and ALL extraordinary people by nature are unusual. So if normal people tell you that you’re nuts, embrace it.

TWO PASMAG: Who were your biggest influences? MM: There are way too many people. From the guy who invented the first carriage on four wheels to a 14-year-old kid named Ken Gushi who beat down all the walls of an establishment and became a professional driver in recent years, and everyone in between. I can probably name a list that will fill a 500-page roster if I listed them all. PASMAG: What’s your greatest accomplishment? MM: I can’t say it is my accomplishment, but evidently I am very proud of everything we have collectively done to date with all the many friends in the community to get this far, and to be able to carry on enjoying automobiles in such ways long into the future. PASMAG: What were your biggest surprises? MM: In 2007, when a former chassis design engineer from Toyota R&D flew over to sit me down in a chair at a random Starbucks and introduced me to a man named Mr. Tetsuya Tada, a chief engineer. This man, who in the weeks that followed, I will find that I will be working with on an ongoing relationship to build the next compact sports car that will stir the soul like the AE86 once did. That car was the FT86, which eventually became the FR-S/BRZ/86 as a production model. I was completely flabbergasted for months, and I still wonder how that all started.

PASMAG: What is it about any particular automotive design that draws you in the most? What aspect most easily hooks your attention? Have you found that this has changed over the years as you’ve grown older? MM: I like any and all automobiles, but what really hits my spot are those cars that have a very singular reason for existence; a luxury sedan that doesn’t pretend to be anything else, a minivan that is solely effective at being a minivan, a heavy-duty truck that can just pull anything as a hauler. A Lamborghini that’s not simply built to be [reliable] or convenient, but for the main focus of getting that attention as a stunning machine that blasts past you on the street. PASMAG: What does Club 4AG do, actually? Is it only a web-based presence or are there gatherings or a yearly car show? MM: Today, Club4AG is a group who voluntarily identify themselves as a member online and offline, without a formal and strict roster, who all enjoy cars, befriend people and carry on spreading the fun of automotive enthusiasm and knowledge. We come to

gather in groups large and small to execute whatever is being asked that fits the goals stated, and do it in the best way possible. PASMAG: How many members has it had over the years? MM: Not sure, but currently we have about 25,000 members online globally who just come together to have fun with automobiles. My goal is never to be the biggest nor to fixate on the number of “LIKES” or trend, but to grow in a healthy natural manner that caters to and represents the quality and focus of the entity.

PASMAG: You’ve recently picked up a Scion FR-S, tell us more about it. Is this the car to save the affordable sports car market? MM: FR-S… I think every single mention that is positive, and negative, by everyone who loves or hates it, are the result of paying attention to the very existence of this car. And as such, as long as people have discussions about it and there are lots of folks who enjoy such cars, that there is a place on earth and in the hearts of those who experience it. Whether that will last a lifetime or not, only time will tell. But since I had the rare opportunity to help shape it – and I rather like this car – that at least in the community that embraces it, it will have a long life as a cult car and be filled with pleasures and great stories to be told by many. It’s really how a car becomes a legendary classic. And that doesn’t happen by marketing tactics or specifications on a piece of paper, but only by the folks who might want to embrace it, even for a short duration of the life we all live, to have something to say about it to future enthusiasts of automobiles.

Some folks have 401k plans, money in the bank from years of hard work, and IRA accounts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some people, like magazine editors, have little more than that which is created by their overly vivid imaginations. Mark Buffington has an Evo 8 and, for him, that’s perfectly alright. You see, where his contemporaries cut their teeth on muscle cars, hot rods and big block V8s, Buffington came late to the game with a small import car he inherited from his father. After a trip to a local show opened his eyes and whet his appetite for what could be, he found the four-door Evolution VIII as soon as it was released, traded in his training wheels and never looked back. Although he’s now 57, and planning to retire in a few more years, it appears that slowing 98

PASMAG

down will be out of the question. He is planning to go somewhere, fast. At the heart of Buffington’s ridiculous build is the infamous 4G63T, with the “T” in this case standing for an FP Red turbocharger upgrade. The downpipe and wastegate come from HKS, and there’s a front-mount Type “R” intercooler and piping connected to an HKS Special Edition black-finished SSQV blow-off valve. Injector Dynamics 1,000 cc squirters are necessary along with an AMS fuel pressure regulator and a Full Blown fuel hat with stainless steel lines. Ensuring sufficient fuel flow is the job of a dual pump setup; one Walbro 255 LPH pump combined with a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo pump. Insane Speed built a custom air intake, which features a K&N air filter for cool flow into the turbo. Inside the ported head are HKS 272- and 264-degree camshafts and timing gears spinning an HKS timing belt under a clear cover. Buffington is especially proud of his fuse box cover, signed by the “Drift King” himself, and all of the custom touches and rare products he’s accumulated, including the ARC turbo heat shield and the Carbing oil catch can with stainless steel hoses. He’s also understandably proud of the power it produces.

“The 4G63 has been around for, like, 100 years. You can put down nearly 600 hp with it, and mine makes a little over 500 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque with the FP Red turbo. My STI-driving buddy always talks about how great his car is...but the STI motor is only good for a little more than 350 hp on stock internals, then you start breaking things like rods. I put him in my car, took him for a drive and scared him.” Engine management duties fall to the venerable, proven, HKS F-Con V Pro, which has been tuned by Mike Angel at Insane Speed in Las Vegas. He’s also using a Blitz boost controller and turbo timer to keep the turbo happily spinning within its peak range. Buffington’s not embarrassed about what he’s spent on the work performed by Insane Speed either. “I look at my car and I think of it as a piece of art. I enjoy constantly redoing it. A project is never truly finished and I certainly agree with that. I’ve maxed out my credit cards, then paid them off, then maxed them out again, over and over.” The driveline modifications consist of an Exedy twin-plate clutch and flywheel and a Driveshaft Shop two-piece aluminum unit balanced to an absurdly-high RPM. Buffing-

ton knows the transmission and differentials will need reinforcement before he transfers the car to race-duty, but that’s still a couple years away according to his plan. His brakes are the very capable Brembo four-piston fronts and two-piston rear calipers powdercoated in white, gripping Stoptech cross-drilled and slotted rotors. They sit inside silver-finished 18x10.5-inch Volk Racing CE28s wearing BFGoodrich 255/40-18 tires. And, as nice as they are, they can be completely overlooked when viewing the rest of the exterior because of the wild VeilSide VSD-1 body kit and Seibon carbon fiber CWII hood, trunk and front fenders. In the rear, an APR 500-series GT wing with custom Uehara winglets rests on 12-inch stands and threeinch extensions to better place it in the air flowing off the Seibon roof vortex generator. Varis front canards, side diffusers and a rear diffuser add the sort of downforce necessary to keep the Evo planted at track speeds. For the chassis, he’s stuck with the 36-way adjustable coil-over system from K-sport paired with Whiteline rear control arms and bushings. Most of the braces come from Carbing, with additional stiffness supplied by the Cusco six-point bolt-in roll-cage. A Cusco carbon fiber cross brace will provide the eventual support for proper race harnesses, something Buffington has yet to purchase. “The only sponsor I have is BFGoodrich, through Team Hybrid. I’ve paid for everything else myself.” One of his favorite tales involves a guy and his young wife stopping by Insane Speed and seeing the Evo in for one of its frequent upgrades. The lady commented on how the car was probably owned by some immature Asian kid with an attitude and access to his parents’ money. Her husband happens to meet Mark at the shop, and they shared a good laugh at just how wrong she was in her estimation of the owner’s demographics. “I’m an old, fat, white guy nearing retirement age,” he jokes, one who loves showing this car off, once going so far as to allow children to crawl JUNE 2014

into the rear seat caged area and all over his carbon fiber and aluminum rear seat panels. “My goal is to win Best of Show at the next big event coming up in May 2014.” His interior might just help, too, with Bride Zeta II race seats on Bride brackets, and a Nardi “deep dish” steering wheel on a Works Bell short hub and quick release. A large Faze tachometer and a full complement of HKS boost, exhaust gas and oil temperature gauges are scattered around the interior with the last three sitting where the passenger’s seat airbag used to be. The critical AEM air/fuel ratio gauge is mounted to the steering column directly in front of the Rally-Art white-face gauge cluster. In one of his few nods to creature comforts, Buffington has installed a JVC seven-inch touchscreen head unit to keep the tunes flowing. We’re not sure what classic rock station goes best with a time-attack-styled Evo, but Buffington has all of the bases covered. We like the Cusco special edition shift knob and the Sparco brake release handle and pedal set, and the silver and white look to the accessories, including the cage, blend well with the dark fabrics and exterior graphics. The wraps for the roof, door handles and bumpers have been completed by Elliot at 5150 Wraps. Why does it look so clean? The answer is simple; it has an extremely low number of total miles on it. At the time of this writing, “I’m just over 8,000 miles on it now,” says Buffington. “I get this from Todd at the shop

(Insane Speed) all of the time; ‘When are you going to drive this thing?’ But this car is scary on the street; it is too dangerous around other cars. I want to take it to the track in a few years.” Buffington doesn’t want to damage the custom body work he’s had performed; he has already sent it in for surgery once more. “The Evo is at the shop again. I’m having them do even wider rear fenders than before. It will be completely different the next time you see it. We’re doing a custom rear diffuser with 12-inch canards where there are three-inch ones now.” Clearly, Buffington has found some sort of ticket to the fountain of youth. His exuberance for this one machine knows no bounds; it comes pouring out with every story he tells. “When I retire... look, the old guys driving their old Porsches, Ferraris or Vettes, those are their dream cars. This is mine. When they go to the track I’m going to be able to beat them in my four-cylinder Evo.” Not only that, this madlyplanned machine is showroomfloor-clean in a way only museum curators and concours judges can truly appreciate. And, in a bit of remarkable restraint, he’s kept it that way for 11 years! If this car was mine it wouldn’t last 11 minutes before I'd try to find its limits. I’d also wind up going to jail, collect a pile of tickets and star in a fairly epic YouTube police chase video along the way! Nevertheless, I applaud his verve and style, and wish him all the best with his retirement plan.

ll business. It's immediately evident that Tyler Pflanz’s Supra speaks for itself. It’s a tuner’s dream and the competition’s worst nightmare. The black on black on black hides some of the finer details, but when it comes to a Supra, that’s just the way you want it. The car has a history for a reason, and Pflanz set out to take that platform and somehow push it to the next level. The Supra owes its roots to Toyota’s Celica and the legendary 2000GT, with the Mark I debuting in 1978 as a Celica Supra, a rear-wheel drive model based on Toyota’s A-platform, the same one used by the Celica until it was reconfigured to the front-wheel drive T-platform in 1985. Using a straight-six motor based on same M engine used in the 2000GT, the Celica Supra was designed to be the preeminent GT car, set to challenge Datsun’s Z, despite a measly output of just 110 horsepower on both the 2.0-liter and 2.6-liter engines. It wasn’t until 1986 and the Mark III MA70 that the Supra effectively cut ties with its predecessor, leading to significant changes that helped create the legend we know today. Suspension was swapped for double wishbones in the front and rear, output was raised to 200 horses and a turbocharger was later introduced. But most notable was the introduction of a new flagship family of powerplants – the JZs. Before the move was made to the new inline sixes entirely, the 7M-GE and 7M-GTE had their swan song as Toyota’s first North American distributorless engines, offering more precise timing and 200 naturally-aspirated horsepower and 230 turbocharged horsepower, respectively. Hinting at Toyota’s vision of the Supra as the ultimate sports car, the Mark III even offered an acoustic controlled induction system to maximize air compression, and user-adjustable electronic suspension. When the first JZ engine hit the pavement, it did so in a monstrous way as the 1JZ-GTE in twin-turbo configuration. Equipping the JZA70 Mark III chassis in 1990, the Japan-only 1JZs stamped their mark with authority, culminating in the 2.5-liter Supra Twin Turbo R with the R154 five-speed transmission, an upgraded Torsen LSD, Bilstein suspension, Recaro seats and more. It was just a hint of things to come. Sure, the Supra’s history could go on for pages – heck, we could do an entire issue on it – but fast forward to Pflanz’s 1993 A80, and it is a perfect culmination of the model’s history. Not only does he keep the beauty of the latest and last iteration of the Supra intact, he expands on each individual aspect with meticulous homage that only adds to its beauty. Pflanz had his first encounter with the Supra when they were still in production. Immediately, the car struck a chord with him. He was too young to drive, too young to know the potential of the car, but there was just something about it that hooked him. “I had seen Corvettes, Vipers, Mustangs, you name it, but none of them had the effect that seeing my first Supra did,” Pflanz says. “This was well before Fast and The Furious, and before the first Supra broke 1,000 horsepower. At the time it was just a car that had that awe inspiring effect on me.” That obsession led to a succession of Supra builds – three, in fact – and while this latest might be the most monstrous of all, it only came after a disastrous fire completely destroyed his previous build, an ultra-rare 3.4-liter twin-scroll 2JZ-GE Supra. “I had just spent years building my 3.4-liter “small” turbo Supra with the JUNE 2014

EVERYTHING intention of road racing it,” he says. “I basically redid the entire car and it was finally ready to be broken in, but on the way back from Import Face-Off in 2008, the car suffered an electrical fire that was caused when the previous owner suffered a driver side fender collision. The Carfax was clean and he made no mention of this. “I watched as years of my life burned to the ground, trying frantically to keep the fire from spreading. In the end, it was still declared a total loss. I thought I was done building Supras and didn’t want to go through that again.” That was until he laid his eyes on this beast that same year: a fullybuilt 1993 twin-turbo Supra. His original intent was to take the car and compete in drag competitions rather than road races, but within 500 miles of buying it, it nearly suffered the same fate as the last. The engine was imbalanced and failed, the sound system almost caught fire, and there were too many shortcuts on the build to even list. His options were pretty cut and dry: sell it and lose the money and potential, or tear it down and make it into something bigger than he’d ever done. So Pflanz set out to create the ultimate Supra – one that could 104

capture best in show and dominate on the track in the same weekend. At first glance, it might appear he tackled the performance of his new car first, but because his audio was the first thing to fail, it was the first thing he fixed. Starting up front, a JVC KW-XG700 controls a tasteful selection of components and subs: 6.5-inch JBL GTO components in the doors and Alpine Type Rs in the rear. Two JL Audio 10W1v2-8 subwoofers sit neatly tucked in a custom vinyl-matched enclosure underneath the rear glass hatch and are powered by Rockford Fosgate 200a Punch and Power amplifiers, complimented by custom laser-cut plexiglass with a red underlit JL logo. The system provides enough power while still allowing the performance aspects of the car to operate uninhibited. When speed is of the utmost concern, Pflanz

can remove the entire enclosure in about 10 minutes. Considering many people expect this car to be all about power, the sound is just icing on the cake. As this, his third Supra build, Pflanz wanted to make it look badder than anything before, so he chose jet-black Aston Martin cosmos paint to dress the car. Covering the Ridox front bumper, front fenders, Siebon Carbon TS hood, Bomex sideskirts, Do-Luck Type 1 rear fenders and Trial rear bumper, the paint gives subtle highlights to the seamless flow of each component for one of the truest exterior Supra builds ever. Paired with the immaculate widebody work, the unison of each individual piece gives the appearance of an OEM Supra on steroids, the way the car was meant to be. Taking that ideology under the hood, Pflanz’s 2JZ is dressed to kill. There’s chrome literally everywhere. It can make some powerplants look too flashy, but here, it

does nothing but intimidate. The beefy Unorthodox cam gears, giant SP81 turbocharger and Sound Performance turbo manifold scream brute power, further reinforced by the Koyorad radiator, customized Virtualworks intake manifold and high-flow PHR fuel rails. Inside the block is an array of parts built to withstand all the power Pflanz can put out, with .20 over CP Pistons, GSC 274 camshafts, BC Brian Crower valves and springs, a complete port and polish and more. When all is said and done, the system cranks out a mind-numbing 1,141 SAE horspower and estimated 832 lb-ft. of torque for a 9.89-second, 154mph quarter mile. If you’re wondering, yes, the Supra is equipped with a six-point roll cage, Sparco racing seats, and Corbeau harnesses. Anyone who knows Supras is aware the stock Getrag V160 transmissions are overengineered to withstand a very high torque limit, but Pflanz is pushing num-

EVERYTHING bers far beyond the norm. To handle shifts under load, he employs an RPS carbon clutch and flywheel before a Torsen Helical LSD transfers that power to the rear wheels. Stopping is provided by an eight-piston D2 Racing big brake kit up front and Supra brake kit in the rear, modified for drag use. Pflanz’s Supra has been making waves throughout the industry

since he completed his six-year project, but many of our readers caught wind of it during last year’s inaugural Tuner Battlegrounds competition and subsequent title showdown at the 2013 SEMA show. Many felt victory was a sure thing as one of the most complete and capable Supras on the continent, and while Pflanz narrowly missed the trophy as the peoples’ choice,

there’s no denying the workmanship in his car. Save for the big brake kit, a set of Niche Monotec Pulse wheels and an App-Tronics Stealth Interceptor, his car came out of the competition the same way it went in. It’s a testament to his vision and the realization of the car he first saw as a kid, back when he wanted to create a Supra that was a class above the rest.

ruiser. Gangster. Thug. The sight of an all-black 1964 Lincoln Continental immediately conjures images of The Godfather and big gold jewelry. This Lincoln plays right into that theme. Known as the "H8R," this build is replete with a gangster-themed design. So, sits yourself back and reads a bit wit us, won’t cha? Gangsters are known to play both sides of the law. Working with the cops when it suits them and, well, doing what they have to when it doesn’t. This Lincoln shares a similar split personality when it comes to the design of the audio system – high-end gear and a clean installation, but with a few secrets hidden up its proverbial sleeves. The heart of any audio system is the source unit and, frankly, the Clarion HX-D3 is one of the best. No frills, no cheap tricks, no bells and no whistles – it’s just a CD receiver that sounds amazing. The installation team at 360 Fabrica-

tion in Abbotsford, BC built a custom leatherwrapped pod for the HX-D3 under the dash, and audio is sent rearward to a quartet of Clarion amplifiers. A pair of XH5410 four-channel amps produces 90 watts per channel to the mids and highs while two XH7110 amps each provide 850 watts to four Clarion 10-inch subwoofers. 360 Fabrication has created custom H8R logos and tastefully blended them into the install, which features stitched leather upholstery and hydro-dipped trim panels with a tortoise shell print to keep a stock look. The front stage speakers are an ultra-rare three-way component set from Clarion. The SRD1701S set is installed in custom pods in each of the front doors. The midrange and tweeter are located just ahead of the door pull while the 6.5-inch woofer is integrated into a new custom armrest. For rear fill, a set of equally rare Clarion SRD1700S 6.5-inch two-way components are installed on the rear deck.

THE ‘SPARE TIRE’ ARSENAL CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE TRUNK QUICKLY AND EASILY IN THE EVENT A ROAD TRIP IS PLANNED.

The real artwork takes place in the massive trunk of the 18-foot Lincoln. 360 started with a pair of custom fiberglass enclosures on each side of the car. The enclosures each house two Clarion WQ2510D 500-watt subwoofers. The sealed design ensures tight, controlled bass and plenty of low frequency output. The enclosures are molded into custom trim panels that adorn the rest of the trunk and all are wrapped in dark gray vinyl with neat and tidy stitching on the seams. In the center of the trunk is what looks like a spare tire cover, but this is the first of several hidden gems in this beauty. Slipping the tire back and opening the bottom cover reveals a set of handcuffs, a pair of brass knuckles and home for a pair of pistols – all trimmed in purple velour. The ‘spare tire’ arsenal can be removed from the trunk quickly and easily in the event a road trip is planned. That, my friends, is far from the end of the story in the trunk where yet another hidden compartment can be found by those with keen detective skills. On the back wall of the trunk is another leather-trimmed, H8R logo-adorned panel. But, if you pull it down and slide the drawer out, you will find yourself a bottle of Crown Royal and a quartet of tumblers – perfect to celebrate an afternoon’s hard work... at the bank, perhaps?

The floor of the trunk is finished in black wool carpet and has a Lexan window that exposes the four Clarion amplifiers installed under the floor. The amps are fed by Wirez Signature Series power wire and distribution blocks while audio signals are passed by Wirez Signature interconnects and speaker wire. There are two Wirez two-farad stiffening caps to ensure the instantaneous current demand from the nearly 2,500 Wrms of amplifier power is readily available. Further power comes from two Kinetik KHC1800 power cells. The mighty Lincoln has received a lot more than just an amazing audio install from the gang at 360 Fabrication. The body of the car was cleaned up, sanded perfectly smooth and coated with three layers of BASF black and three coats of clear, each one hand-sanded to a mirror finish. The bumpers along with the front grill have been re-chromed to ensure the exterior

look is on par with the recreated and reupholstered interior. Overall, more than $75,000 has gone into the H8R project by its Chilliwack, BC-based owner. He’s a big fan of Lincolns, and also owns a ’63 Lincoln Roadster and ’64 Lincoln convertible along with a ’57 Chevy and ’65 AC Cobra, to name a few. But, the H8R turned into a fun and unique project. It’s subtle and understated, but leaves a lasting impression on anyone that sees it. And, with its amazing audio system and its original 400-horsepower big block V8 under the hood, it’s undoubtedly the perfect ride to cruise the financial district with.

Formula Drift’s 11th season kicked off in the Streets of Long Beach, which has served as the season opener for nine straight years. The course packed more than 20,000 fans into the stands and the podium included a first-timer, a former champion and the defending champion. Forsberg and Essa are back to contend for the Title

Dai Yoshihara’s BRZ is the craziest off-season build

The rookie class is strong

Last year, Forsberg and Essa had a heated battle throughout the season, meeting three times in tandem competition. Both looked sharp in the first event of the season, and both landed on the podium although they didn’t face one another. We expect the rivalry between these two to continue to grow this season.

While there are only a handful of new builds this season, Dai Yoshihara’s turbocharged Chevy LS7-powered Subaru BRZ is the craziest build we’ve seen in quite a while. Completed by the team at SPD Metalworks, the car features some amazing engineering and has been several months in the works. We look forward to getting a closer look at it in future rounds.

Alex Hohnadell and Geoff Stoneback both had great battles in the Top 32 tandem round, looking just as competitive as many drivers who have been competing for several seasons. Last season, not a single rookie qualified in Long Beach, and many felt that the rookies weren’t very competitive overall. This year, the first-timers is a group to watch closely!

Nexen Tire out, GT Radial in as Formula D tire sponsor

Hyundai has two cars in the series for the first time ever with Team ARK Performance

Late in the offseason, Nexen decided not to return to Formula D as a tire sponsor. This sent Odi Bakchis (Nitto), Ryan Kado (Yokohama), Joon Maeng (Maxxis), and Kyle Mohan (GT Radial) into a scramble to find new sponsors. For Mohan and rookie Tyler Wolfson, they are the first two drivers on GT Radial’s SX2 tires, keeping the number of FD tire suppliers at eight.

Rhys Millen competed in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe from 2009 to 2012, but for the first time ever, two Genesis Coupes will be competing in the series. Dennis Mertzanis will be piloting a newlybuilt Gen Coupe for Team ARK Performance, which is powered by a supercharged LS7. His former V6 turbocharged car will be driven by new teammate Pat Mordaunt.

Untitled-3 Jacobs Drift1Insider 16.03-June.indd 2

06/ Keep an eye on Kenny Moen this season Kenny Moen has been competing in Formula D for several seasons now, but his freshly-built Achilles Tire S14 looks much more competitive than his 350Z. His podium finish in Long Beach could mean a promising season is in store for the Norwegian driver.

Ryan Kado, Matt Field and Chris Jeanneret had mechanical gremlins We hate to see a driver unable to turn a tire on track all weekend, but for all three drivers, that was the case in Long Beach. Both Jeanneret and Kado’s cars simply weren’t completed until a few hours before the first competition. Look for both Jeanneret’s Honda S2000 and Kado’s 350Z to be sliding shortly. Field’s car was seen in the pits, but some tuning issues kept him from competing. All three will be looking to make up for lost time in the next round at Road Atlanta.

Third place is now decided by qualifying order

Canadian drivers are looking stronger than ever

Due to time restraints, Formula D has decided that the third-place consolation battle will no longer happen. Instead, the lowest platform on the podium will be decided on qualifying order. At Long Beach Essa earned third place as the top qualifier over Justin Pawlak, who qualified sixth.

For the first time ever, three Canadian drivers are looking to run a full season. Last season’s Rookie of the Year Mats Baribeau (Brockville, Ontario), Dave Briggs (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Marc Landreville (Montreal, Quebec) all qualified for the Top 32 tandem in Long Beach, and each had great battles. Baribeau earned a Top 16 appearance while Briggs pushed Formula D powerhouse Vaughn Gittin Jr. to a ‘one more time.’ All three look promising based on their Long Beach performances.

The sport of Time Attack is evolving as fast as the cars develop. Motorsport governing bodies and event organizers continually review and tweak rules to align competition and safety levels. Teams develop their cars into hair-trigger, high horsepower beasts with advanced aero packages in order to put the power to the ground. This is yet another unique form of motorsport that originated in Japan. Initially contested by aftermarket tuning and parts companies to showcase their market offerings, the cars are losing weight and gaining state-of-the-art aerodynamic features. It is no longer all about horsepower when it comes to beating the clock; it’s a showcase of engineering technology. The Australian Tilton Interiors Mitsubishi EVO IX has taken on further development in the quest for victory. Not content with second place at the 2012 World Time Attack Challenge and determined for title victory at the 2013 event, the team travelled to the birthplace of the sport: the Tsukuba Circuit in Shimotsuma, Japan. Lessons learned from the trip were applied to further develop the EVO. Apart from track time at Tsukuba, the team spent joined Voltex at Mie University’s wind tunnel in Suzuka to significantly develope the aerodynamic package. The suspension geometry has been reconfigured to compliment the stability of the new aerodynamics. A reliable and powerful Borg Warner EFR turbo now charges air into the 980-horsepower fourcylinder engine. With development driver Garth Walden behind the wheel, the EVO posted an outstanding lap time at the 2013 World Time Attack Challenge. On day one of the two-day event, Walden posted a lap time of 1:24.855, which was 2.5 seconds clear of the competition for the entire event. In a form of motorsport where the field is separated by fractions of second, 2.5 seconds is a huge margin. The Tilton 118

Interiors team had the goal of making significant improvement over their second place finish in 2012, and all of their efforts proved to be worth it. Sydney Motorsport Park is the home track for both Walden and the car. In fact, Walden works there as part of the Radical SR3RS Driving Experience offered at the facility. The Tilton EVO is a marvellous piece of machinery with world-class fabrication and development. It’s all of the small details – the clips holding the top of the front door frames closed, the induction box, the driver’s footrest – that make this car great. Observing the body of the car seems an endless game of ‘what’s the coolest thing?’ Each vent, fin, canard and panel is a marvel of technology. The electronics, while simple in appearance,

are highly complex. The Motec dash sits most prominently and additionally there are a number of other Motec items that contribute to the EVO’s speed. A centre diff controller and power distribution module are part of the system, too. There is a series of sensors in the wheel arches placed to measure tire temperatures, which helps find tiny bits of time and aids in further development. About that 980 horsepower; it’s not a typo, nor a figure pulled out of thin air just to impress. The team states that it's 980…plus! How does the little 2.2 liter do it? It has the best Cosworth internals, in addition to a massive BorgWarner turbo and a group of other systems that work together. There are other secrets that must be kept, though. After all, this is serious competition.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF? People always comment on my stomach as well as my eyes. They say I have an exotic look which makes me different than others. Also, I’m very laid back and easy to get along with.

WHAT DO YOU DRIVE? I drive a blue 2007 Pontiac G5 with 17-inch wheels and a decent sound system that I've been working on myself. Next up [are some] tinted windows. I love my car’s color as well as the drive, but I wish it had a black interior instead of gray. I wish it was comfier too!

DO YOU HAVE A DREAM CAR? White Audi R8. You gotta love German exotic cars. Every time I see one I end up groaning or squealing! They just do things to me.
