PASMAG’s Tuning 365 returned to Formula DRIFT Englishtown at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park on June 11th for the second straight year, and over 130 cars competed for their chance to be featured in PASMAG!
The first award of the day was the Driver’s Choice, made by Ryan Tuerck who selected Eryk Szekalski's 1995 Toyota Supra, and followed by Larry’s Pick by famed shooter Larry Chen, who chose Jonathan Brulinski's 1996 BMW 325tds.
The show also featured another round of the 10th Annual PASMAG Tuner Battlegrounds Champion -
ship presented by LiquiMoly. In this #TBGLIVE event, Luis Chuche Hernández with his 2002 Honda S2000 received the highest vote total, and will now receive a spot in the Top 64 bracket for the annual championship.
Editor’s Choice awards were also presented to Rene Orellana (2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8), Aneudys Mejia (2005 Honda S2000) and Rex Villa (2020 Tesla Model 3). For the first time in the Formula DRIFT series' 19-year existence, Round 7 of the FD PRO Championship and the final round of the PROSPEC Championship were both held at Utah Motorsports Campus in Grantsville, Utah. John Santos has been into fast cars as long as he can remember. A hereditary inherited passion from his father, his love for cars only grew as he became old enough to truly enjoy them. From a co-owned Civic with his brother, to an Eclipse GSX, to an R32 Skyline, and finally - after some others along the way - to this insanely aggressive S2000 you see here, Santos’ journey through modified car ownership has been full of hits.
Before he had even purchased his 2003 Honda S2000, he knew he wanted something that he could take to the track and be competitive, but also keep the car on the street. To him, a racecar that you couldn’t enjoy the rest of the week was a waste of time, so the goal was a dual-purpose vehicle. When he first found the vehicle, it was impractically low to the ground, on stretched tires wrapped around BBS wheels with a considerable amount of negative camber. While that may be perfect for some people, it wouldn’t last long in Santos’ hands with his time attack aspirations.
The car originally had a CD009 transmission in it, but for the purpose of time attack, Santos opted for a DCT transmission from a BMW M3. After some trials and tribulations - both related to the transmission, as well as other mechanical mishaps - the DCT is in the car and making shifts in 80 milliseconds, and Santos says they can probably get even faster. Until then,
he and his team are constantly data logging and making improvements.
Under that wild exterior of custom aero and widebody flares is a plethora of impressive suspension work, fine-tuned for serious track driving. Nitron 3-way adjustable coilovers, spherical bearings, and a full set of K-Tuned arms in the front and rear allow Santos to make adjustments to his suspension setup on the fly with ease. Look a little further beneath the car and you’ll find 5.9 axles hooked up to a 370Z differential with a Wavetrac LSD inside. Pair all of this with that DCT transmission and you

can rest assured that power is making it to the ground properly.
Speaking of power, you must already be painting pictures of what lurks under that vented hood. Purists will be pleased to hear that despite the Frankenstein drivetrain made of several other vehicles, the F22 remains - this one built by Inline Pro. Giving the F22 ample power for the circuit is an impressive mod list, which kicks off most noticeably with a BorgWarner 8474 turbocharger mated to an external wastegate direct to that tell-tale side exit.

turbo, the F22 was treated to 2000cc injectors, a Magnus intake manifold, custom radiator and intercooler setup, and all managed by AEM Performance Electronics’ Infinity ECU. All in, the engine now makes a potent 800 horsepower at the rear wheels.
Lightweight, flow-formed Konig Countergram wheels are wrapped in Yokohama A052 tires at ground level, and behind them you’ll see a StopTech big brake kit. All that power isn’t going to set killer lap times without stopping power to match, so that BBK consists of 15-inch front rotors and 14.5-inch rear rotors, with STR 6-piston calipers up front and STR 4-pistons in the rear. From there, the only way to increase stopping power, as well as get faster, was to lose some weight.

Immediately standing out is a set of Kirkey seats, mounted to the floor - something taller and wider drivers will appreciate in such a compact platform with limited space. Santos then took it upon himself to make his own carbon fiber door panels, while a friend of his made him a carbon fiber dash and center console, echoing the carbon fiber lightweight diet of his splitters and canards, as well as that gorgeous APR GT1000 wing mounted to the rear of the chassis.
Once it was tuned and ready to rock, the final piece of the puzzle was to paint the whole
thing and lose the original fading white paint. He was having trouble deciding on a color when his friend, Adrian, who worked at an auto repair shop, told Santos to drop the car off and he would surprise him with an aggressive look. Upon showing up to the shop after the job was done, Santos took one look at the gloss black S2000 and never looked back. That black paint served as a perfect backdrop to the custom graphic vinyl wrap he applied before SEMA 2022. We’re glad he trusted that surprise, because this has to be one of the most badass S2000s in Canada.

Immediately upon first glance at his 2017 Lexus RC F, a platform he chose for its own rarity as far as Japanese V8 sports cars go, you can certainly see what we mean. Wild and eye-catching graphics, custom wheels - everything on this build is designed in some way to let onlookers know: That’s not OEM. That said, not everything is just about garnering attention. For Clanton, this look is more about paving his own path and dedicating his work to his own family heritage.
By now, unless you’re blind, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that
intense custom vinyl wrap. Printed by a 16p printer, multi-layered, and fully reflective with varying reflective elements throughout, Clanton takes pride in having designed this wild wrap himself to carry the aura of the build. Glowing in the sunlight and reflecting lights in the dark, the entire wrap transforms and changes depending on the lighting situation, but looks stunning at all times. The wrap was carefully and deliberately lined up over the amalgamation of carbon fiber exterior trims that transform the RC F’s profile.
You may have also noticed that the reflective wrap doesn’t reach the hood, and it leaves out top of the front fenders. This, of course, is by design. The hood itself is one of the build’s highlights, and a frequent topic of conversation at shows. Underneath the artwork is a Seibon Carbon hood, but it’s radically transformed thanks to multi-candy paint and ghosted designs. Over 50 hours of work took place to get the hood looking the way it is, and the theme blends nicely with the rest of the wrap that follows behind the front end.
At ground level, that theme continues with his stunning custom wheels, another 1-of-1 element. It took four months of back and forth research and development, but after all of that, Clanton landed himself a gorgeous set of 3-piece, 20-inch wheels of his own design. “The spoke design is what makes them unlike any other wheel,” he tells us. “The spokes are Samoan spearheads, and the rest is the Filipino sun with spinning center caps. The wheel is multi-candy painted, combined with powder-coating which is a fusion process never done before.”

All of this heritage-inspired exterior comes together in a truly head-turning fashion, especially when that custom exterior airs out over the custom wheels thanks to D2 Racing’s air suspension system managed by Air Lift’s 3P management. The dual 344c VIAIR tank setup is part of the elaborate trunk setup, which also features his Skar Audio and Mark Levinson combination audio system, and you’ll find more of that themed interior in the cockpit with carbon fiber everywhere and eye-catching red upholstery and trim.
Being such a rare platform, aftermarket support for the RC F is limited to a narrow, albeit high quality, catalog of parts, and when you’re trying to break the mold in every aspect
of your build, it requires some tinkering. Chasing a unique exhaust note with a “beefy” tone, pun absolutely intended, led Clanton to combine an Akropovic exhaust with dual Varex mufflers. Of course, the noises this machine makes aren’t strictly because of its cool exhaust. With forged internals, an RR Racing Motorsports carbon fiber intake, and a Zex Nitrous 200 shot for that extra little jam, the RC F puts down a respectable 740 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque at
the rear wheels. Did you think this was all show and no go?
Despite winning countless awards, representing Team Hybrid both nationally and internationally, and continuing to leave show-goers in awe with his build, Clanton says his RC F is still a long way from being completed. He promises more mind-blowing custom work in the near future, so we’ll be watching intently to see what comes next. Rest assured, whatever he does next isn’t coming off the shelf.

MXP short for Mackin eXtreme Products is the brainchild of Mackin Industries who has 30+ years of experience in the automotive parts industry. I’ll just keep it stock.” A sentiment we’ve heard time and time again. One that may be true for a moment, but by the time the person who uttered it is speaking to us, we know that it couldn’t have remained that way for long.
Like many before him, Jason Helmick went through this phase of ownership when he picked up his 2015 Scion FR-S off the lot in 2015. It didn’t take long before outside forces influenced him to take the plunge. A couple of years into ownership, one of Helmick’s friends connected him with someone who had a spare supercharger kit for the BRZ/FR-S that they weren't planning on using.
As soon as that supercharger entered the picture, it was game on, and Helmick decided he wanted to build something out of this platform that had so much potential. He was introduced to Jared Bradfield, a Subaru specialist of JRod’s Garage, who helped him sort out the potential mods available. Helmick’s build started like many others do: wheels, coilovers, UEL headers, an exhaust, and every single piece of carbon fiber they could find for the FR-S. It had begun, and there was no stopping it now. A bright wrap and some colormatched wheels later, and Helmick was all aboard the show circuit, taking home awards and making connections along the way.
When he was growing up, Helmick’s father was a huge source of inspiration, and the reason he got into car culture was because of his father helping him build his first car at 16 years old, a 1969 Ranchero. When his father passed away in the summer of 2016, it changed Helmick’s life, and
he made the ultimate commitment: to build his 2015 Scion FR-S into the best FR-S build on the planet as a tribute to his old man. In October of 2018, after much deliberation and planning, the car was back in JRod’s Garage. They were starting over from the beginning.
It was this life-changing event and subsequent transformation that brought us the FR-S we see before us.

Everything on the car already was removed, and they immediately began cutting the car’s stock body to make way for the Aimgain x Stancenation widebody kit. While having his wheel wells sealed up at RAS Automotive Engineering, he also had them create the one-off aero package you can see here. The front splitter, side sail panels, mounts, the rear diffuser, a custom grille, functional side vents, the center-tri-exit exhaust - all of these were a result of establishing a partnership with RAS, and they’re still prominent features in the build today. The exhaust remains one of the most noticeable and talked about modifications on the entire car.
In 2019, upon moving to Las Vegas, Helmick still didn’t feel like the car was truly at its best presentation just yet. Upon joining the prestigious car club, Team Hybrid, he redesigned the livery to the wild styled one we see now, and had the custom three-piece wheels built by Brada Forged. The entire interior was redone, with hydro-dipped dash, trim, and console pieces echoing the same wild style throughout the cockpit. With a handful of sponsors and connections made throughout the years of building, Helmick was able to propel his build from “just another FR-S” to one of the craziest we’ve ever seen - certainly worthy of that Team Hybrid banner.
“It's been a long journey from that first day driving it off the lot until now, but one I wouldn't change for anything,” Helmick reminisces. “The contacts, recognition, and friends I've made along the way - and the help and support I've received from everyone involved to get to where I am now - mean the world to me, and I'll never forget any one of them. Most importantly, I think wherever my father is now, he can look down with pride on a build that I completed as a result of being inspired by his memory.”
