n July 1998 the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) passed a trade regulation rule regarding power output claims for amplifiers used in home audio products. Basically, the rule states that whenever any power output is expressed (in Watts or otherwise) it should come from a standardized measurement and should include a full disclosure of the amplifier bandwidth, number of channels and measured distortion. Because of this rule and the political power of the FTC, home audio amplifiers have become fairly consistent and for the most part an honorable product category when it comes to claimed power. However, if you expect this same sort of ethical and honorable behavior from the car audio market, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Here at Cogent Audio Labs, I measure hundreds of all sorts of amplifiers every year, including several dozen

car audio amplifiers. Because I have been doing this job for the last 30 years, I’ve seen a dramatic shift in the ethical advertisement of power. Back in the 1980s and 1990s when the car audio amplifier market was still in it’s fledgling and formative years, the vast majority of manufacturers published fairly accurate power specifications. As the market became more competitive, new brands popped up seemingly overnight, including perhaps some brands who lacked the engineering expertise of their competitors, or who were trying to simply sell at the lowest possible price began to fudge the numbers. These deceptive and dishonest practices got bad enough that many of the best manufacturers and the Consumer Electronics Association (now known as the CTA) worked together to develop a standard that would help level the playing field for the consumer. The result was known as CEA-2006, and then later revised as

CEA-2006B. Products that were tested to this standard and published honest power ratings were allowed to put the CEA logo on the package in an effort to let consumers know the published specifications were real. However, not all manufacturers, even some ethical and honorable ones, were keen on using this new standard, and real consumer awareness never really caught on. At this point, it’s important to point out that there are still many honest and ethical car audio companies, and not all of them use the CEA logo on their products, but without it you just never know what you’re getting. A basic rule of thumb that can be applied is price. You do get what you pay for, generally speaking. The downside of this is with only a handful of quality brands using the standard and the logo, many other less ethical brands have decided to put whatever number on the box that

makes it sell. As an example, I just measured a top selling amplifier (over 100,000 of these are sold annually) from one of the popular online retailers and the results were shocking, and saddening. On the box, and in the manual, the power was stated as 4 x 100 watts. Also, on the box and on the amplifier itself it said in bright letters, “400 Watts.” The retail price of the amp? $69.95. When I first unpacked the amp and saw those claims, I was immediately skeptical, if for no other reason than the amplifier was equipped with a 15 ampere fuse. Basic Ohm’s law math would indicate that even if the amplifier had 100% perfect efficiency (not physically possible) it could only produce 216 watts. When I measured the amps actual power, it only developed 22 watts per channel, for a whopping 88 watts total. This amplifier wouldn’t make 400 watts if you lit it on fire! But there it was, for all to be misled on the box, on the product, and in the manual. At some point, I’m pretty sure these kinds of ridiculously fraudulent claims are going to come to a head, probably in a courtroom somewhere due to a large, potentially bankrupting class action lawsuit. And then, the car audio manufacturers are likely to face the same rules and regulations from the FTC as the home audio market did. When the CEA-2006 standard was created, the goal was to have a self-regulating industry. Obviously that has failed, so it seems inevitable that the FTC will be called upon to step in and protect consumers from these fraudulent manufacturers. Until then, buyer beware!

Competition is not a virtuous deed, and is a divisive subject. Someone must lose for another to win. So, what is it that drives us to compete with our audio systems in contests?

do it from the desire to be right. Competition is a method — a measurement tool — to justify our decisions, right or wrong. Winning gives the feeling of credibility that our choices are the best. Whether it's the vehicle we choose, the brands we use, the people we affiliate ourselves with, or plain luck. Nobody wants to be wrong.

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO EXPERIENCES

I grew up in a rural area of the Pacific Northwest during the 90s. The closest I got to car audio competition as a teenager was in magazines and on the internet. Until I moved to Nash-

ville, Tennessee and attended my first real car audio event, the 1999 dB Drag Finals in Louisville, Kentucky. I felt like a 6-year-old going to the World's Fair. All at once, I saw things and met people in real life! I met Alma Gates; she signed my t-shirt. Overwhelmed with sensory overload, that event changed my perspective forever. Shortly after, I discovered MECA and commissioner Steve Stern, who lived nearby. This allowed me to work with others to write the initial MECA SQL rule book, which built relationships with people who remain a massive part of my life today. One of those people is Scott Buwalda, who I'd followed for years. Another is my wife of 15 years now, who was at

the first competition I participated in. I work in the industry for Hybrid Audio, which has allowed me to see and hear car audio on a worldwide scale. In all that, I have one major takeaway: We can only define an experience by the experiences we've had to that point.

OPINIONS EVERYONE'S GOT 'EM

Criticism of car audio competition in all its eras is common. In 1991, Richard Clark said "We need to work on show organization and unification. Unless we do more to develop this into a spectator sport, it will never become more than a bunch of guys competing in small circles." Those criticisms are familiar for anyone involved over the past 28 years, and it's proven to be the outcome for modern day SQ competition in the United States. But that's OK - we need to embrace it for what it

WE'RE SIMILAR, BUT DIFFERENT

Everyone views competition with a different set of values, desires, and experiences which change over time. If a competitor from the past has an experience that's limited to a specific timeframe, and they were either very successful or unsuccessful during that time, then their particular experience will guide how they view competition. I diagnose those who only reminisce about the "good old days" in car audio with “Uncle Rico” syndrome. They remember their high school years as the glory days for everyone, when they could "throw a football over them mountains," but competition's highschool era also had large crowds of people and participants. Competition proved more people wrong - by sending them away without a prize - than right. If someone was there for no other reason than to get together and party, then it was OK. However, that left the remaining participants, who wanted more, out in the cold without reason to come back.

Over the years, many events became a low-quality experience for SQ competitors. Event promoters tend to cater to SPL, and as the differences between SPL and SQ broaden, the outcome of combining them gets worse. It's like trying to connect soccer and basketball because they both have a ball. Recently, there's been a collective effort to push SQ competition into its own sphere. Taking into account the priorities of those involved, all the organizations (IASCA, MECA, and EMMA) have engaged in supporting this community, and the result is a better experience for everyone. There's been

participation on a worldwide scale, with individuals from the U.S. judging at the 2018 EMMA Eurofinals in Salzburg, Austria, and the entire judging team from EMMA UK participating at SQOLOGY's event in Georgia, where 100% of the registered vehicles competed in IASCA, MECA, and EMMA, as well as install. SQOLOGY has recently teamed with Qobuz to use their streaming service as a media source, and the 'Qobuz Demo Challenge' will make spectators an active part of the event's outcome. It's observable that the criticisms are being addressed with those currently participating.

afael Capone has been interested in car audio and custom cars since he was just a kid, and has been building cars since 1990. He was at Spring Break Nationals in 2013 with his old competition Camaro when he saw - and heard - a white truck with a motorized bed full of speakers. The build was so awe-inspiring that Capone decided he would build something of his own back in Atlanta. Once back in Atlanta, he picked up a 2005 Hummer H2, largely because of its unlimited potential as a sound-stage. ruce Miller had been out of the car audio scene for a while when he picked up his 2012 Toyota 4Runner to haul his race bikes to and from the track, without any plans to modify the vehicle other than an upgraded set of speakers and a subwoofer. In July of 2015, Miller had a rough accident on track, break several bones and requiring multiple surgeries. About six months after the crash, he got tired of sitting around, and he began to look into modern day car audio to see how much it had changed. Miller decided he would set aside some money for a simple audio system, and during that time he met a guy named Joseph Davis who convinced him to go to an audio show just for fun. It didn’t take long to reignite the addiction he once had. After building the system himself, he needed tuning assistance, and went over to Chris Zenner the human RTA. Since Zenner’s passing, Steve Cook at Audio X has been his audio tuner and good friend.

ichael Myers’ 2016 Scion iM audio build is the result of a totalled previous build, which was wrecked before he owned this car. In the summer of 2016 he picked up his Scion iM and got to work. teven Head found himself interested in cars from a young age, largely thanks to family members who were into drag racing and hot rods. In 1985, Head became addicted to car audio. eremy Kough is no stranger to building vehicles for the world of competition audio. While he was serving in the Navy in 2003, a MECA show ended up in Virginia Beach, which is the first place he competed in a true audio competition. When he retired his previous record-setting builds, he set his sights on the uncommon 1987 Seat Terra you see here. He knew the platform had potential for a seriously loud audio build, so he got to work right away. A battery is a battery, right? For many, the answer is obvious, but for those who would like a little light shed on this subject, let’s take a quick look at the differences between a basic starting battery and the alternatives. Batteries have been used to start vehicles for over a century now. A simple internet search reveals the technology in a standard starting battery has changed very little since their introduction in a 1912 Cadillac. The world waved bye-bye to those pesky and dangerous engine hand cranks, and let an electric motor do the job.

the automotive industry grows and innovates on both the OEM and aftermarket levels, the demands placed on the battery have only increased. From what was a basic starting battery application, the addition of radios, upgraded factory stereo options, winches, GPS, light bars, aftermarket sound systems, and air systems means the battery technology must also keep up. And yet, often the last thing most folks in the automotive enthusiast community want to upgrade is the battery - until their weekend is interrupted by the very thing they overlooked.

Let’s quickly outline some of the unique challenges car audio and modern vehicles bring to batteries: Extreme Heat and Cold Temperature extremes can wreak havoc on a battery's ability to start and cycle. Vibration Most city and highway driving won’t generate large amounts of vibration, but roads aren’t kept in the best of shape nowadays, and there are plenty of people going off-road, especially in trucks or at race events. Batteries need to be built strongly to hold up to years of constant vibration.

Accessories As noted earlier, the introduction of electronics places increased demand on the battery, especially if these electronics are in use when the engine is not running. Many times if there are enough accessories (such as multiple amplifiers or light bars), the vehicle may need multiple batteries and/or a high output alternator. Deep Discharge Light bars and sound systems will often be used while the engine is off, and the battery is not receiving the support of the vehicle charging system. A starting battery will fail prematurely in these circumstances.

A starting battery is designed to deliver a short burst of energy quickly. After doing its job, the battery is immediately charged back up by the vehicle charging system (generator, alternator, or stator). Like most batteries, a starting battery is filled with electrolyte (sulfuric acid) and a series of 2-volt lead plates. The plates in a starting battery are composed of a sponge lead. This composition works very well for doing one thing: starting a vehicle. However, these spongey plates, as one might imagine, can deteriorate quickly when subjected to other factors beyond the scope of starting the engine.

Obviously, the challenges to a battery in a modern vehicle are not going to lessen any time soon. In fact, it’s in our very nature to demand more, to want to go further, and to do more. So, what is one to do? Fortunately, we have boats to thank for the first innovation in battery technology. Boats need to do two things: turn the engine(s) over, and run the house (lighting, navigation, etc.). To this end, the dual-purpose battery was born. A dual-purpose battery has thicker, cast lead plates that can stand up to deep discharge events and recover completely after being charged back up. Unlike a true deep cycle battery, the plates are a little thinner to allow for the fast and efficient energy bursts to start the engine, but not so thin that they fail when cycled down. Dual-purpose batteries solve some of our most essential challenges. Great! Problem solved, right? Not quite. While a dual-purpose battery will perform much better than the traditional starting battery, other issues remain. The dual-purpose battery solves the issue presented by running gizmos and gadgets, but our

little list of challenges still has some unchecked boxes. Without getting bogged down in too much detail, suffice it to say the traditional dual-purpose marine battery struggles to crank in temperature extremes, is subject to failure from vibration-rich environments, and if stored for more than a 3-4 weeks will need to be kept on a charge tender. Further, most dual-purpose batteries will require watering. Get out your safety glasses, gloves, acid-resistant apron, and turkey baster! Enter the maintenance-free, highcompression, thin plate, pure lead, AGM battery (referred to as TPPL). These TPPL batteries not only address the same issues the once beloved marine battery addresses, but they have some other nifty innovations to tout. First, like dual-purpose, the plate construction is cast for strength. However, the grids that compose plates are made up of thin strands of criss-crossed leads. This thin-plate design allows for high rates of charge and discharge. In other words, the batteries can crank hard and charge fast. With the increased demands

and usage of the battery’s capacity, the ability to readily absorb charge is critical. Additionally, the batteries themselves have very low internal resistance. This equates to a very low rate of self-discharge. Put it away fully charged and come back in 6-8 months. Then there’s the issue with temperature extremes. This is a signature feature of AGM batteries - they are much more tolerant to hot and cold environments than any other battery design or chemistry. Flooded and lithium faring the most poorly, while gel is very similar to AGM in this regard. Further, that part about “highcompression” needs to be explained. During manufacturing of an AGM battery, each cell is packed into the battery case under high-compression. When subjected to vibration, the plates are held in place by the absorbed glass mat and case surrounding it. Finally, maybe your vehicle is stock standard, no frills, gas and go. In this case, you will at least want to consider picking up an external charger to keep that basic battery at the

right voltage while the vehicle sits. Then again, there are still reasons to upgrade the factory battery. Peace of mind for years to come, knowing that you won’t need to replace that battery, and the fact that you can add some of those accessories you really want down the road. With the growing demands of newer vehicles like more electronic systems (most vehicles have dozens of computers - some are closer to a hundred!), bigger factory stereo systems, “start-stop” functionality (which requires an EFB or AGM battery), and other improvements, the battery you choose is becoming more important than ever. Performance vehicles have been seeing this importance for years with the improvements coming from computer-controlled engines in racing - those computers can only record and optimize the performance as long as they’re kept powered properly! Car audio competitors have known the importance of quality batteries for decades, and that’s why thin plate AGM batteries have been trusted there for so long. AGM has the track record and reliability that so many people demand. It’s an easy choice!

Car audio competition was in its absolute heyday during the mid-90s, with governing bodies like IASCA and USACI blowing up the scene across the United States and beyond. Weekend audio competitions would bring competitors from across the map to parking lots and show venues to see who could be the loudest and proudest.

school bass-heads and up-and-coming audiophiles who could barely drive, all of whom were there to enjoy the sights and sounds of quality audio installs. As time went by, some attendees grew out of the scene, but some of them grew up with their heartstrings still firmly attached to the world of competition audio. So where are those guys now? For old school sound quality competitor Thomas Kirven, his tastes may have changed overall, but quality audio is still in his veins, and he still very much considers himself part of the audio scene. After all, who doesn’t love to roll down the windows, turn up the music, and cruise the highway? Now older and more successful, Kirven’s ride of choice has shifted from old hatchbacks and box trucks with speaker walls to something a little classier, but just as fun. Kirven now finds himself at the wheel of a 2017 Ferrari 488. Not too shabby. Having grown up in and around the car scene as far back as the ‘90s, no vehicle of his could remain stock - not even something as complete and prestigious as Ferrari’s incredible 488. Since the car’s performance was already well handled, thanks to Ferrari, the only performance mods Kirven needed were Novitec’s N-Tronic ECU upgrade, an F-1 Valvetronic exhaust, and Novitec lowering springs. In the looks department, Kirven wasn’t totally satisfied with the OEM 488’s looks, so he employed Novitec’s carbon fiber aero kit and side vents.

With performance and looks well taken care of, he turned to designer Chris Pate, and his team of Edgar Diosdado, Matt Vowell, and Frank Nieto at Mobile Toys Inc. in College Station, Texas to engineer and machine an audio system worthy of the Ferrari. A combination of Focal and Mosconi audio components would certainly do the trick, but how do you go about building a clean and classy install that doesn’t infringe on the Ferrari’s interior? Leave it to the pros at Mobile Toys Inc! To upgrade the 488’s audio system, Pate and his team employed the latest and greatest offerings from both Focal and Mosconi, two brands which sit atop the highest echelons of car audio. To meet amplification needs, the team turned to three offerings from Mosconi’s Zero series amplifiers: a Zero Class A for the Focal Utopia M tweeters, a Zero 4 for the M Utopia 3.5- and 8-inch drivers, and a Zero 3 to power the Focal 10WM subwoofer. To handle the signal processing, the team employed the Mosconi Aerospace 8to12 processor, and the AMAS-96k interface source unit. Fitting the amount of speakers involved into the Ferrari’s interior is already a challenge, but trying to do it in a sonically pleasing way requires some extra finesse. Thanks to the expertise of the team involved, they were able to test and engineer speaker locations for optimal sonic reproduction. Once they figured out the best locations, they had to be sure to install and finish them with the class that the Ferrari demands. The result of this testing and engineering is a set of seriously sleek A-pillar speaker pods up front, a hidden subwoofer install behind the back bench, and a beautifully lit and engraved amplifier layout in the trunk behind a custom grille. The completely integrated stealth Escort Max 360 radar system is just the icing on the cake. With the audio system carefully engineered and installed, and stand-out components finished to match the class of the 488’s interior, the build was done by Kirven’s standards. The end product is the culmination of impeccable craftsmanship by both manufacturers and installers alike, producing a perfectly functional blend of speed, sound, and comfort, all in a stunning exotic package. It turns out growing up doesn’t have to mean getting old!

Our friend J.J. Dubec is no stranger to the pages of PASMAG. Some of you may recognize his name from previous features such his Liberty Walk R35 GT-R, or one of his Liberty Walk Ferrari 458s. Presumably by the time you lay your eyes on these pages, you’ll have noticed a common denominator among Dubec’s latest builds they’re always adorned with a Liberty Walk widebody kit. Being a pioneer in the space has landed Dubec a sort of unofficial brand ambas sador role to Liberty Walk, a role that allowed him to be the first in the world to complete a next-gen NSX Liberty Walk build.

SEMA 2015, when Dubec sat down with Kato Wataru, founder of Liberty Walk. Having seen Dubec’s previous build expertise on display at the show, Kato-san was already impressed, and asked Dubec what projects he thought would be cool for their near future. They were both excited seeing the concept renderings of the NSX kit, and Dubec agreed to embark on another widebody project to set the bar even higher than before. In November of 2016, Dubec acquired the very first serial-numbered LB Works widebody kit for the NC-1 NSX. Dubec’s trailblazing didn’t end at the body kit, either. His reputation and networking ability helped partner with brands like Armytrix to design the world’s first aftermarket full exhaust system for the platform. He also enlisted ZeroDivision, SerialNine, and Trick Factory Customs to develop the first air suspension system for the NC-1, managed by Air Lift Performance’s 3H management system. Helping expand the tuner aftermarket in this way filled Dubec with pride. “We weren’t simply buying parts off the shelf,” Dubec tells us. “We were actually helping design and manufacture new parts that would be used to further the available list of options for the other owners out there who choose to modify and personalize their cars.”

With the bar set so high right out of the gate, the rest of the build had to live up to the hype, and the widebody install was just the beginning of a radical change in the NSX’s appearance. In addition to the carefully crafted and installed LB Works kit, the Acura supercar was treated to a carbon fiber swan-neck spoiler, bespoke Trick Factory Customs/Headlights NW dancing headlights and tail lights, and a special matte metallic paint blend from BASF’s Glasurit line made specifically for Dubec by PhantasyKolors in Seattle, dubbed DocZilla Surgical Steel. Tying the exterior look together is a set of Technocraft Forged custom 3-piece wheels, 20-inches wide, wrapped in Nitto NT555 and NT555 G2 tires in the front and rear respectively. Inside the cabin, the NSX’s red leather and carbon fiber interior is improved thanks to a custom alcantara headliner, some color-matched accents to bring the exterior theme inside, and one seriously impressive audio install. As you might already expect, only the highest quality audio components were permitted. Using a

combination of Mosconi, Morel, and Metra mobile electronics, the car was outfitted with a cleverly compact system that boasts seriously impressive sound quality at all volumes. Rather than fill the small front and rear trunk spaces with audio components, leaving no room for practicality, Dubec and the Trick Factory Customs team opted to place just the amplifier - a Morel MPS 5.950 5-channel - on a custom rack between the two air tanks in the tight half-sized rear trunk. Integrating the amplifier and air tank installs together with a custom CNCengraved bracket, featuring the F7LTHY x Trick Factory Customs logo design makes for a stylish space-saving and show-worthy trunk. This amplifier uses a Mosconi AMAS-2 Bluetooth streaming interface module coupled with the OEM head unit fed into a Mosconi 8to12PRO DSP as a source.

LB WORKS AMBASSADOR Bellowing the audio in the car is a combination of Morel audio components, which includes Morel Elate Ti-602 6.5-inch component speakers up front, mounted to acrylic adapter/spacer plates. In the footwell of the passenger seat, a Morel Ultimo Ti SC104 10-inch single voice coil subwoofer sits in a custom sealed and brace enclosure, which features custom accents in a glossy dark red finish to play off the factory red leather interior perfectly. All in, the audio system not only sounds phenomenal, but is carefully crafted to continue the overall theme and execution of the build. The details of the entire build inside and out cannot be overstated. “I personally love some of the meticulous details that most eyes, except the most keen, will tend to overlook. For example, the paint throughout this car has been painstakingly redone to include gloss black painting of all the stock black parts. Every vent opening and most of the contours around openings were extended to include a black silhouette,” Dubec explains. “This gives the car a very subtle but noticeable ferocity. It is best seen when next to a stock NSX. Also the smallest details like using ProBolt USA titanium tapered heads and washers with threaded inserts throughout instead of screws, or custom inner and outer diameter hardware with meticulous repainting of those parts to the custom body colors.” To the victors go the spoils, and the effort put into this build, much like any of Dubec’s previous work, did not go unnoticed when it showed up at SEMA. “Having pros like Chip Foose and Ryan Friedlinghaus approach our F7LTHY team at SEMA shows and compliment us on these builds is extremely motivating for us to continue to outdo ourselves year after year,” he says. If you’re a Corvette fan who meandered through the Toyo Tires Treadpass at SEMA 2018, you most definitely took a moment or two to appreciate Brian Garin’s 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. With a custom widebody kit covering big wide tires, and a screamer pipe poking through the hood, the 2019 Stingray’s appearance tells a story of its own, alluding to a potent powertrain under the InfiniteGrey paint job. This build, however, is much more than just a boosted widebody ‘Vette.

BEFORE WE DIVE DEEP

into the build and the process it took to get into the Toyo Treadpass, it’s worth examining that telltale widebody. The extended and vented front bumper, extra wide front fenders, and wide quarter panels are all bespoke one-off creations, designed by none other than the iconic Jon Sibal, a man who has designed more than his fair share of custom works for the SEMA floor. When designing this kit, every proportion and line was taken into consideration, which translates to a cohesive design which accentuates the Corvette’s already-existing lines, as well as the bulges and lines on the VIS Racing carbon fiber hood, which has since been removed to show off a Turbonetics turbocharger, front and center. With wide features making up the exterior design language, that theme is continued with APR Performance’s carbon fiber rear diffuser, side scoops, and a massive 84-inch carbon fiber deck spoiler supported by an Infinite Auto Design billet swan-neck deck mount. Now considerably wider than stock, the wheel and tire combination had to reflect that, so Rotiform’s RSE wheels were employed in 20x10 and 20x13 measurements in the front and rear respectively. STUNG wheels allowed for extra meaty Toyo R888R tires, measuring 275/35 in the front, and 315/35 in the rear. All of this widening begs the question: why? Other than show-worthy looks and a very cool talking piece (I mean, Jon Sibal designed the whole kit. How cool is that?), the wide stance and big tires help contain the monster beneath the surface, which the visible turbo does a great job of conveying. With a Turbonetics T88 midframe turbocharger hooked up to the Chevrolet LT1, Garin’s Stingray makes a neck-snapping 633 horsepower at the rear wheels. Lowered on West Coast Corvettes lowering kit, the Corvette is no slouch in the corners either. What makes Garin’s Corvette even more special is the fact that it would be right at home on the floor of CES, or other mobile electronics shows. Thanks to his partnerships with brands like Audio Control and Oncore Audio, Garin is able to enjoy incredible audio quality during his drive. A plethora of amplifiers and a DSP from Audio Control amplify audio signals, sending them to a colorful array of Oncore Audio speakers, subwoofers, and tweeters, as well as set of Audio Physics 3-inch mid-range speakers. All in, this system produces ground-pounding audio with stunning audio quality. Believe it or not, the build you see here was completed, in entirety, in just six weeks once Garin learned he could have a spot in Toyo’s Treadpass. With the help of his team, who he thanks for sticking out the long nights at the shop, this 2019 Corvette shows off just what Infinite Audio Design is capable of, and that’s what his original intentions were for the car. “It doesn’t take a year to build a SEMA-quality car,” he says in closing. “As long as you have the right people that are passionate in what they do, and understand what needs to be done, you can make it happen.”

fantastic sound quality with both the lows and the highs of the music it would be playing. By now, he knows to trust his systems in the hands of the master, Marshall Woolford at MARS AUDIO. Raybuck and Woolford sat down and meticulously planned out his build before making any drastic modifications. With Woolford’s expertise, Raybuck decided on a true show-worthy audio build, which would be as loud as the best of them. With a full Rockford Fosgate audio system, the power and hardware was on tap to boast a loud and proud system, but they weren’t done just yet. In the trunk, the amp rack is a motorized show piece, which transforms the rear of the vehicle into its own show at the touch of a button. With gloss black audio components matching the exterior of the Armada, and red accents emphasized with Heise LED red lighting strips inside and out, the exterior decals were the icing on the cake to tie the whole build together.

ADON CROSSFIELD HAD ALWAYS FELT THAT HYUNDAI’S GENESIS COUPE WAS A SEVERELY UNDERRATED PLATFORM, and he set out to prove the car’s potential with his own 2010 Hyundai Genesis. His original intentions were to just slightly modify the car to play around with it, but it soon snowballed into a show car build as he started to see the car take shape. At one point in the early stages of the build, Crossfield was going to buy an upgraded turbo before anything else. Luckily for him, he bumped into Craig Simmons, the mad scientist of C&S Performance, who educated him on building something properly. After learning that the big go-fast parts come last, Crossfield made the smart decision to take care of the basics first. What started with an intercooler

quickly became a full build, with a focus on keeping the car well-rounded inside and out. With a heavily modified interior and exterior, and some supporting modifications on the engine, he’s finally ready to chase that turbo upgrade that started it all with C&S Performance. Crossfield extends a heartfelt thank-you to Simmons. “I'm still unsure what he saw in me, but he helped me from the beginning,” he says. “He quickly went from a stranger to a friend, and soon, someone I looked up to and idolized. I would have never accomplished what I have without Craig. He's been there for every question I had, and has given me an understanding about cars I couldn't gain anywhere else.” It’s awesome guys like Simmons and shops like C&S Performance that make dreams come true.
