I only knew of this show from photos and vlogs. It’s always been my dream to go to Tokyo Auto Salon, and when the opportunity came, I couldn’t say no. Tokyo Auto Salon, to me, has a little bit of everything from Japan’s car culture.

O

n day one, being sleep deprived while surviving on vending machine drinks and 7-11 food wasn’t what I expected when being at TAS, but it honestly didn’t make a difference. Just seeing the quality of cars at the show everywhere you look was breathtaking. I also casually

met a few Japanese icons such as Keiichi Tsuchiya and Kazuhiko “Smokey” Nagata during the show! Day two was a battle. It was a quick one shot here and then move onto the next car. There just wasn’t enough time to wait for a shot to clear up before another swarm of people crowded the

car. Although frustrating, I still managed to get some decent shots during the day. After experiencing day two, my game plan for the third and final day was just to get crowd shots and head for the TAS main parking lot. The parking lot is massive and has a lot of hidden gems here and

there. I could spend a whole day going up and down the rows! At the end of the show, large crowds gathered around the exits of the venue to catch the cars leaving the show. I was lucky enough to get some shots inside the venue as people were beginning to head out. A perfect end to three days at TAS!

Things would only calm down come lunchtime, and it was almost impossible to get a decent shot. There was a lot of waiting only to have someone step in front of you mid-shot. I was also surprised to see a lot of elementary students at the show. E

very year RWB hosts a meet to celebrate the new year, usually taking place around the same time as Tokyo Auto Salon. This year it was at Salvatore Cuomo & Bar Kashiwa in Chiba City. The Speedhunters photographers arrived in style, with Ron Celestine and Dino Dalle Carbonare in the new Aston Martin Vantage, as well as Mark Riccion in a Rolls Royce. We also had the pleasure of bumping into Larry Chen at the meet. We knew right away we were at the right location when we could hear the sound of GT-Rs and Porsches echoing in the distance. As we followed the noises, the first car that caught our eye was Charles Wong’s R34 GT-R pulling into one of the parking lots. Good start. There were a couple parking lots in the area with RWB Porsches wherever you would look, and Akira Nakai himself showed up in his personal RWB 997 911 Porsche. A highlight of the night was seeing a white TVR Tuscan roaring through the streets. Japan has it all!

Level One and many other car groups host meets every year that take place during the week of Tokyo Auto Salon.

hese meets are usually invite only but sometimes social media and word of mouth get out of hand. The Shibuya Underground Meet is quintessential Japanese street meet culture all gathered in one place. We were invited by Level One to an underground parking lot in Shibuya, Tokyo. We arrived early, but before we knew it the masses started to pour in. Among the masses were many well known Youtubers and photographers. The parkade turned into what felt like a scene out of The Fast and The Furious, and eventually the meet became so rowdy that even the police showed up to keep an eye on things.

2019 TOUR CHAMPIONS Through the course of 2019, the Driven Show team held seven events in seven different cities as their 2019 show tour. Two new champions were crowned during the Driven Aftermarket Car Show 2019 Canadian National Tour. JJ Dubec from Vancouver took home the top prize for show accolades with his Liberty Walk NSX, and James Creasy from Calgary was awarded for his Ken Block Inspired Ford Focus. The seven city tour point series was based on two categories: Overall accolades based on judging, and distance traveled to the Driven 2019 Tour stops. Through a combination of quality work to his car, as well as distance travelled, Creasey earned himself the title of Driven 2019 champion.

MODEL YEARS: 1973 CODENAME: KPGC110 / KGC111 (Kenmari) ENGINE: S20 2.0L Naturally Aspirated I6 The rarest of all GT-Rs, the KPGC110 of 1973, was produced in such limited numbers that today it has become a collector’s item. The codename “Kenmeri” was born from the car’s advertising campaign, which featured Ken and Mary, a fictional couple, driving around the countryside in their Skyline GT-R. The oil crisis of the era had consumers preferring economy cars, and high-performance cars were looked down upon at the time. Introduced in September of 1972, production of the KPGC110 was short-lived, ending in March of 1973 as Nissan pulled out of racing campaigns, and had no reason to continue the GT-R line. Only 197 were ever sold, and this would be the last GT-R to roll out of Nissan for 16 long years.

MODEL YEARS: 1969 - 1972 CODENAME: PGC10 / KPGC10 (Hakosuka) ENGINE: S20 2.0L Naturally Aspirated I6 Even though the first Skyline was born in 1957, the GT-R moniker didn’t come to fruition until more than a decade later. The first Skyline model to don the GT-R badge came in 1969 in the form of the PGC10 Hakosuka. It began as a sedan, but would later become a 2-door coupe with the KPGC10 in the latter half of the model’s time on Nissan’s lineup. With racing in mind, Nissan stripped the GT-Rs of unnecessary equipment to be as light as possible, making the Hakosuka a weapon on the track. During its tenure, the C10 boasted 50 race wins before Mazda’s RX-3 ended the victory streak, becoming its main rival.

CODENAME: R32 ENGINE: RB26DETT 2.6L TwinTurbocharged I6 16 years after the GT-R name left the Nissan lineup, the R32 GT-R was born, bred specifically to dominate Japanese touring car racing. That’s exactly what it did. The R32 GT-R featured Nissan’s ATTESSA all-wheel drive system to keep the power down, which was developed by Nissan after studying Porsche’s iconic 959. What separated the R32’s AWD system from Porsche’s was the unique ability to divert all power to the rear wheels when needed to reduce understeer. The RB26DETT power plant was built to be a serious contender, rated for less power than it actually made from factory, and it is still used by enthusiasts today. The R32 GT-R dominated all 29 of 29 JTCC races it competed in, taking the title every year from 1989 to 1993. V-Spec and Nismo versions were introduced in the later years of the model, and by then the world had already dubbed the GT-R with its iconic nickname - “Godzilla” was here to stay.

One inch wider, four-inches longer, and a slightly lower ride height from factory than its predecessor, the R33 GT-R was Nissan’s attempt to address some of the balance issues of the R32. The RB26DETT received some minor updates for the 1995 and up models such as a turbo ball bearing upgrade, turbo dump pipe, turbo compressor aerodynamic upgrades, and an intercooler upgrade. This little boost in performance let the R33 GT-R become the first production car to crack the 8-minute lap time at the Nurburgring, completing its lap in just 7 minutes and 59 seconds. Once the guys at Nismo got a hold of Nissan’s new halo car, they churned out the Nismo 400R, an absolute weapon of a GT-R, making an easy 400 horsepower from the RB which had been bored out to 2.8L, and 500 horsepower was attainable with a simple boost adjustment. From the R33 and on, all GT-Rs would be equipped with Brembo brakes. Despite its incredible history, the R33 was often overshadowed by the iconic racing history of the R32, as well as the cult symbol of Japanese tuning that followed it.

CODENAME: R34 ENGINE: RB26DETT 2.6L Twin-Turbocharged I6 The last generation of GT-R that would exist under the Skyline banner, the R34 was made famous by movies and video games, as well as by its own timeless styling. This would also be the last time we saw the RB26DETT, this time in its most potent and engineered form with upgraded turbo cores, turbo outlet pipes, and intercooler outlets. Perhaps one of the most significant and special features of the R34 GT-R was the Multi Function Display (MFD) system in the dash, featuring diagnostic readouts one would normally only get via auxiliary gauges like oil temp, water temp, boost pressure, and more. Numerous special editions of the R34 GT-R were born in the later years of its production, including V-Spec, MSpec, and Nismo varieties. The ultimate R34 GT-R comes in the form of the Nismo Z-Tune, with a 2.8L bored “RB28DETT” making around 500 whp. Only 20 of these were ever made.

CODENAME: R35 ENGINE: VR38DETT 3.8L Twin-Turbocharged V6 After the GT-R name’s second hiatus from the automotive world, Nissan stunned the world when they debuted the sixth-generation GT-R at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, this time without the “Skyline” moniker attached. This car stood alone as “the GT-R,” and it was quick to impress despite its rather bulky design, a significant departure from previous Skyline GT-R platforms. The design, as explained by Nissan chief creative officer, Shirō Nakamura, was likened to that of the Gundam series’ giant robots. "The GT-R is unique because it is not simply a copy of a European-designed sports car,” he said, “it had to really reflect Japanese culture." The customizable multifunction display, a feature which carried over from the R34, was designed in partnership with Polyphony Digital, the creators of the Gran Turismo video game series. Under the hood, a slight departure from the RB26 of previous generations. The new drivetrain featured a VR38DETT, a brutal twin-turbocharged V6 power plant that would go on to be one of the fastest engines ever just a few years after being introduced. Today, the sky is the limit as far as VR38 builds are concerned, with many of them reaching 2,000 horsepower and staying road-worthy with relative ease. V-Spec, Black Edition, Track Edition, and finally Nismo editions were introduced as the years went by.

While technically still an R35 GT-R Nismo underneath all of that style, the GT-R50 was announced in 2019 as a limited edition model to celebrate 50 years of the GT-R. The otherworldly design was a collaborative effort between Italdesign and a team of Nissan’s European and American designers. Not one to let their design outshine the performance of their cars, Nissan also bolstered the Nismo’s VR38DETT with bigger turbos from a GT3 GT-R, heavy duty crankshaft, stronger pistons and rods, a modified intake system, a new exhaust, a recalibrated gearbox, and a reinforced differential. All in, this GT-R marvel is good for 711 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque. Only 50 GT-R50s will ever be made.

There was once a time in Godfred “Freddy” Boafo’s life when he had nothing with wheels to his name. Long before he could drive, he was obsessed with cars, and since he didn’t have a bicycle at the time, he would chase cool passing cars on foot until he couldn’t run anymore.

ay back when Boafo was old enough, and well off enough during his high school days, to build an H22-powered Honda Accord, he had always set his sights on Nissan’s mighty GT-R - with a love for every generation of the iconic JDM Godzilla. To him, the GT-R represented everything about a perfectly well-rounded sports car - it had power, style, and a racing pedigree as iconic as any before or after it. Fast forward to the modern day, and Boafo is realizing his dream one car at a time. He now owns not one, but two GT-Rs, an R32 and an R34. While the R34 sits in storage as a plan to do something crazy in the future, Boafo has already done something crazy in the

O form of his 1992 Nissan Skyline GT-R which he bought in 2006. Before he could even legally register the car for the road, he purchased the GT-R as one of the first to ever land in Toronto, Ontario. Even as a stock vehicle on the original 16-inch wheels, the car got attention from JDM fans everywhere, many of whom immediately recognized one of the most potent powerhouse cars from video games and old videos. By this point, he was quietly saving money to eventually build the R32 GT-R to its limits, not just for himself, he says, but for GT-R lovers everywhere. He wanted his GT-R to represent everything that the iconic platform was at its core, so every type of GT-R fan would have something to appreciate and aspire to. This meant cutting no corners, and using quality parts throughout, a decision which would bump up the price tag of this

According to Boafo, though, the decision to pay the premium is worth it in the long run. “Spend a bit more and you’ll be happier than buying cheap and doing it twice,” he says, offering advice to builders making the same decisions. A well-rounded build was always top of mind, but the RB26’s potential was too enticing for Boafo not to go crazy with power. Enlisting the help of the team at Dynamotorsports Tuning, known for their quality high-power builds, Boafo gave his RB the full treatment from top to bottom. A ported and polished head sits atop a fully built bottom end featuring JE pistons and Crower forged rods. In the top end, HKS 272-degree camshafts and cam gears, as well as a full Supertech valvetrain. Air flow is handled by way of a custom intake manifold mated to a 90mm throttle body, but the real attraction in the engine bay is the massive Garrett GTX4508R turbocharger with a Tial 1.00 A/R rear housing on the custom V-band turbo manifold. All in, this setup, with all of its associated bolt-ons and supporting mods, is good for a deadly 1,042 whp at 38 PSI. Handling power like that is a job for an Exedy triple carbon clutch mated to a custom built transmission from an R34 GT-R, and a custom Driveshaft Shop driveshaft and ensuring

that power makes it to the ground is a set of Toyo R888 tires measuring 285/35/18 on all four corners. Those Toyo tires are wrapped around an 18x10-inch set of Volk Racing TE37SL wheels, one of the first key pieces in the GT-R’s aggressive yet functional styling, and it only gets better from there. Also at ground level is a Rocket Dancer front lip with an APR splitter, Nismo carbon fiber side skirts, and a Top Secret rear diffuser. Higher up on the body you’ll find an APR GT500 carbon fiber spoiler, and up front there’s a set of Nismo N1 air ducts integrated into the front bumper.

Styling of the car maintains a sleek and clean look without going overboard, and the entire ensemble is lowered just enough via a set of Tein Mono Flex coilovers with electronic damping control. With a full set of Cusco arms and sway bars, the car is built to handle just as well as it launches. Inside the car, simplistic design reigns. A custom modified set of front seats from an R34 Skyline work in tandem with Takata 5-point harnesses to keep driver and front passenger safe and snug, and custom Bride fabric rear seats add to the style throughout. As a well rounded build, you can bet there’s some audio components as well. An Eclipse double-DIN head unit serves as the source for a set of JA Audio component speakers and a matching subwoofer. As much as we might lose our sense of responsibility behind the wheel of a monster like Boafo’s R32, he says he

spends a lot of time driving the exact speed limit with his kids in the car. With TVs mounted on the rear headrests, the kids love trips in the high-revving powerhouse as much as he does. Because of his typically responsible behaviour on the roads, he’s also received positive attention from local law enforcement when they see he’s enjoying the car with his children. Truly a well-rounded build all together, Boafo is never truly “finished” with any project, and he tells us he frequently upgrades at least a couple of parts every year as new technology and improved parts come around. In the meantime between mods to the R32, he’s got his own R34 and a Toyota Supra to toy with as well. If he intends to build either of those to the level that this Skyline is built to, we cannot wait to see what comes next.

Eric Strickland found himself drawn to import cars in the mid 1990s after toying with car audio and local shows for a while. His first foray into the import world was a 1994 Honda Accord EX sedan, built to replicate Honda’s JDM Accord SiR and turbocharged to a whopping 400 whp. Then, when the “bugeye” Subaru WRX was introduced in 2002, he couldn’t keep himself away. He sold his boosted Accord and picked up a World Rally Blue 2002 Subaru WRX, getting to work right away on replicating Subaru’s WRC rally car at the time. After six years of ownership, and a few different iterations, the WRX was sold to make room for his incoming magnum opus, a build which would exceed his previous projects by leaps and bounds.

trickland’s love affair with Nissan’s Skyline platform started in the early 2000s thanks to Best Motoring and other Japanese car entertainment he could find online. At the time, he never imagined he would be lucky enough to own one of his own, let alone build it to the limit, but he

decided to start seriously looking for one in 2007. By February of 2008, he had a 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R in his name. With the help of some friends at Alamo Autosports in Arlington, Texas, the real fun began. Quality of aftermarket parts was immensely important to him, so after some research on quality aftermarket parts, Strickland and the Alamo Autosports guys threw the GReddy/ TRUST catalog at the car. GReddy’s A-pillar gauge pod, Type S coilovers, differential covers, a TRUST Power Extreme Ti R exhaust, and numerous engine bolt-ons were among the first large order of parts for the GT-R. With a handful of modifications made, and a SEMA appearance in 2008 under the

belt, Strickland decided he was going to go all out with a true restoration job. With the engine and transmission pulled, the chassis was stripped and reduced to bare metal to address

any rust spots and future concerning areas. During this time, he took the opportunity to replace all bushings and bearings, powder coat all suspension components, and undercoat the car’s underside - this was a true resto-mod project now. The engine was disassembled, and the RB head was sent to Michael Ferrara at Club DSport for top of the line head work, which included Tomei cams and a full Supertech valvetrain. At the same time, the block was stripped down and cleaned, and assembled with all new internals to exact tolerances by Brice from Alamo Autosports.

Once the car and complete engine were back in his possession, the drivetrain was reassembled and dropped into the car, and ready for a tune with two new Garrett GT2860-5 turbos. The final result was a respectable 537 horsepower at the wheels, which was plenty more power on tap than any previous builds. Of course, power is only half of the battle, and with plans to build the perfect all-around car, suspension had to be addressed as well. A full gamut of Nismo arms, braces, and anti-sway bars were installed alongside Cusco strut bars. All in, the setup

was good for the street, as well as any road course. Ensuring the car could also hold its own ground at the local shows that got him into the scene in the first place, the R33 GT-R was treated to a handful of body pieces from the Nismo 400R special edition, including the front bumper and splitter, side skirts, and two-piece carbon fiber spoiler. With a love for rare JDM parts, he also sourced a Stout Type-R carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber Ganador mirrors, Bee Racing carbon fiber side diffusers, and a handful of other cool parts like East Bear LED tail lights.

4LEST For many enthusiasts of all ages, this is the top of the totem pole. Timeless design, pop culture stardom, refined engineering, and balanced yet potent performance potential all combine to make the R34 Skyline GT-R one of the most iconic cult classics of modern tuning. In addition to a long and impressive racing history, balance is an important theme across all GT-R models to roll off Nissan’s assembly lines over the years. For many, the R34 was the peak of this balance - an entire generation before the Skyline moniker was abandoned for the heavier GT-Rs of the modern day. These cars were truly the best of all worlds for enthusiasts.

D

arren Shady is one of those enthusiasts who idolized the R34 GT-R, and like many who would come before and after him, his love for the car was a product of the pop culture he grew up around. For him, the first real exposure to the platform was via Gran Turismo 2 on the original Playstation. His intrigue for the hero car brought him down a path of extensive research and history lessons, and he became enamoured with the Skyline and its racing heritage. In no time, a man who grew up building Mustangs had a new dream car in a JDM rival to his original love for classic American muscle.

With a penchant for modifying cars that runs deep in his family, the Skyline GT-R was the perfect canvas for Shady to tinker with and achieve its true potential. In due time, Shady acquired a 1999 model for himself. Unsurprisingly, there were no other R34 GT-Rs in his area when he picked up the car, so it was up to him to blaze a trail for the local scene by carefully researching every modification. He knew from the beginning that he wanted a well balanced build with plenty of power on tap, but he also wanted it to feel at home and comfortable on the street without making for a punishing driving experience. After some initial complications with a cracked block and a snapped crankshaft, the RB26DETT was rebuilt using an N1 block and forged internals. Every part inside or on the engine was carefully selected based on its proven track record and recommendations from reputable builders. The result is an engine made up of an eclectic mix of high quality parts from brands like Tomei, Supertech, ARP, and many more trusted names. This

paid off in spades, as Shady says the singleturbo converted RB has been rock solid since the refresh. The single turbo mentioned was upgraded to a BorgWarner S369SX-E FMW turbocharger recently, but at 25 psi on an E80 ethanol tune for the previous smaller turbo, it made a potent 803 whp and 622 lb-ft of torque. It’s only going to get better from here with the new setup! Behind the engine, the drivetrain is made up of an ExtremeClutch 230mm twin-disc organic clutch and lightweight flywheel mated to a Getrag V160 six-speed transmis-

sion, which is bolstered with Synchrotech Pro-Series steel/carbon fiber synchros and hardened synchro sleeves - more than capable of containing the 800-plus wheel horsepower on tap, as well as the planned 1,000-plus horsepower Shady has planned for the future. A combination of Brembo calipers, DBA rotors, and Hawk Performance brake pads bring this freight train to a stop at the drop of a hat, and a square set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires measuring 285/35/18 throughout keep the car stuck to the road, looking great while wrapped around 18x10.5 TE37SL wheels in a Gunmetal finish. Stylistically, Shady keeps things simple in order to preserve the overall timelessness of the Skyline’s design, adding only subtle changes to accentuate design cues, rather than replace or reshape them. Little touches like the paint-matched Seibon DS carbon fiber hood, Jun carbon fiber high wing stands, and Nismo’s carbon fiber wing blade, front lip diffuser, dry carbon rear diffuser, and pillar garnishes all work in

tandem to keep the aggressive design true to the original, with some added flair for good measure. Finishing off the look, and adding some handling prowess, is a set of HKS Hipermax SP coilovers, lowering the entire car nicely over the iconic Volk Racing wheels. Inside the car, you’ll find more attention to detail that really drives home the idea of a balanced and completely thought out project. Shady designed his own interior, and let the guys at Interior Motives and Robson Design go crazy. Interior Motives hooked up Shady with a complete custom Napa leather and Alcantara reupholstery, which includes logo-stitched headrests, sun visors, headliner, and custom door cards, and Robson Design handled some tasteful carbon fiber interior pieces like the center console and steering wheel. Cool style changes aside, the interior is kept purposeful in modification - Nismo floor mats, an Autometer 52mm gauge pod, a JVC double-DIN head unit, and Takata 4-point harnesses to keep driver and passenger secure. In the trunk, Shady let the custom work shine. A tribute to Paul Walker, a name now

synonymous with the R34 thanks to the Fast & Furious franchise, decorates the rear elements of the audio system with a beautiful carbon fiber and LED display by Beyond Concepts. It’s the perfect home for his JL Audio subwoofer and 5-channel amplifier. Other audio components include Pioneer 2-way component speakers and 4-way coaxials hidden throughout the cabin. This build really does do it all, and Shady has his partners and friends to thank for so much of the car’s wellroundedness. Carbon fiber is one of the automotive aftermarket’s favorite materials - and for good reason! The lightweight yet strong nature of well made carbon fiber. The looks. Even the name sounds cool when you say it, right? Carbon. Fiber. Most enthusiasts either have some element of carbon fiber or aspirations for it on their own builds. For some like Cole Kay, however, a simple carbon fiber hood or spoiler isn’t enough to satisfy the itch. With a big platform like the R35 GT-R Nismo, it turned out to be the perfect recipe for balance.

ole has been modifying cars as long as he can remember. His modification bug isn’t just about making each vehicle his own, or making it unique. In fact, it’s often not about the outcome at all. For Cole, it’s about the process and the people he meets along the way. “I find every build I ever do forces me to explore and use new shops,” he says, “inevitably building new friendships along the way.” After building a 7-second fox-body Mustang strictly for drag racing, as well as a Ford F-250 on 40-inch wheels to tow trailers and race cars, Cole set his sights on the extremely tuner-friendly GT-R Nismo.

Upon taking ownership of his 2016 Nissan GT-R Nismo, he installed some carbon fiber hood struts to help keep the hood open when he was in the bay because his left arm was injured at the time. Those hood struts were the first of many carbon fiber additions. Cole wanted to keep the overall body design true to the OEM Nismo GT-R, which means only the hood and wheels changed their actual shape on the exterior. If you saw the car in the dark, it might just look like a black GT-R

Nismo, but as soon as the light hits any panel, you get an idea of what’s really happened here. Every single panel and exterior part has been changed out to make it the world’s first full carbon fiber body GT-R Nismo. In addition to numerous Overtake carbon fiber parts which include the trunk, doors, roof, quarter panels, front fenders, hood, A-pillars, mirrors, fender vents, and even the emblems, BulletProof Automotive went above and beyond by stripping down and refinishing the front and rear bumpers in carbon fiber, as well as providing custom carbon fiber door handles and surrounds.Working closely with BulletProof Automotive gave Cole the ability to apply custom one-off pieces made

of carbon fiber wherever possible. Inside the cabin, every single thing has been changed to a custom carbon fiber version from the vents to the radio surround, and even the center console and steering wheel. For those who aren’t yet aware, Overtake doesn’t just make high

quality carbon fiber panels. The Overtake engineering expertise is present throughout. The differential is a combined effort of Drexler and Overtake. The carbon ceramic brakes behind the Carbon Revolution CR-9 carbon fiber wheels are Overtake branded. The lexan glass replacement for the windows is Overtake. Even the specialty coilovers are a collaborative effort by Overtake and SACHS, in the form of Nur GT300-spec 3-way adjustable coilovers. The titanium intake manifold and piping in the engine bay? Yup - Overtake. The engine bay isn’t just an average dressed-up VR38DETT, either. With 400 pounds taken off the weight of the bulky GT-R, Cole wanted to bridge the gap in power to weight ratio even further. In addition to the Overtake
