BACK IN ACTION It’s been a wild ride these past few months, huh? We’ve never been happier to see the summer weather. This issue serves as our annual Tuner Handbook, an essential guide for the beginning of car season. While shows might look a little different this year, we’re making sure to provide some guidance on preparing for the season on the street, track, and wherever your ride takes you. To do that, we’ve assembled a variety of content that pertains to season prep, and getting out there safely. Buyer’s guides featuring the latest and greatest oil & lube products, tires, and more are all represented here to help you kick-start your season of driving. Whether it will be on the street, on the track, or both, we'll continue to help you get there every step of the way. But wait - there’s more! This issue also highlights our two Tuner Battlegrounds 7 finalists. First up: The champ! Kalvin Mali with his 2JZ-swapped 1990 Nissan 300zx took home the title and the cover of this magazine for his efforts. Following him is runner-up, Anthony Do, with his 2JZ-swapped 1993 Nissan 240sx. These guys worked hard to make it to the Tuner Battlegrounds final round, and their SEMA experience is one we’re sure they’ll never forget. For their efforts, we’ve compiled a full feature on both of their cars so you can get an in-depth look at each one of these awesome 2JZ Nissans. Of course, these are just a few of the things you’ll find in these pages, alongside our usual PAS content, including an introduction to the world of overlanding, and a deep dive into the product development of Oracle Lighting and ISC Suspension. As always, thanks for reading!

KICKER DONATES PPE TO MEDICAL CENTERS

Aftermarket Industry

PANDEMIC RESPONSE t’s been a strange couple of months for all of us. With the emergence of Covid-19 sweeping the world by storm, individuals and organizations were forced to adapt rapidly to a changing landscape. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about our precious aftermarket automotive sector, it’s the fact that things never truly stop. For some of us, they don’t even slow down - regardless of global circumstances. During this pandemic, organizations within the industry have worked hard, not just to keep themselves above water, but to aid the essential workers, including healthcare professionals, that keep the world turning. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all involved in these relief efforts by recognizing their contributions to the front lines. These are just a few of many examples. Thank you all!

Stillwater Designs, the parent company of Kicker Audio, with support from several component suppliers, recently stepped up to the plate to offer 10,000 facemasks in support of community efforts to fight COVID-19. Believing that “charity begins at home,” 8,300 masks were donated to Stillwater Medical Center to accommodate hospital patients and the staff caring for them. Another 1,200 face masks have been sent to Hillcrest Medical Center, a 620-bed hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, through a Kicker staff connection, and another 500 masks were contributed to a group of New York City hospitals through Kicker brand and sports marketing director Roger Demaree, whose nephew is a surgeon currently working at a NYC hospital. Additionally, the company was pleased to offer a supply of clear face shields to area first-responders. Besides distributing the vendor-supplied face masks, a 15-year Kicker team member and his family have also found a way to make a positive impact in the local community. Kyle Ambrose, who works in research and development, began experimenting with the company’s 3-D printer, normally used for creating prototype parts. Ambrose consulted with a healthcare professional about local needs and learned that beyond face masks, face shields were in great demand. Ambrose subsequently researched and discovered approved patterns online and created a headband that could be used to secure a clear face shield. He reached out to Stillwater Christian School where his children are enrolled to inquire about the availability of clear safety film used for overhead projectors. He enlisted the school’s participation in donating needed materials and also secured additional film donations from Fenton Office Mart (Stillwater). While 3-D printing is a slow process, Ambrose is able to produce three bands simultaneously in under three hours. To date, he has hand-crafted over 100 shields which were initially slated for Stillwater Medical Center and then redirected on the hospital’s recommendation to the area’s senior-assisted living homes that were experiencing shortages. Ambrose personally delivered the shields to each home where they were gratefully received. “We are pleased to be able to share our resources with our community,” says Kicker founder Steve Irby. “Stillwater is our home and we appreciate the opportunity to support those who care for us.”

MAXXSONICS DONATES PPE ACROSS MIDWEST

LUCAS OIL PRODUCES AND DONATES TO HIGH-RISK FACILITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS The California-based distributor and manufacturer of oils and additives, Lucas Oil, had placed a renewed focus on the local communities in and around Indiana and Southern California, providing muchneeded assistance to the communities that are an integral part of the Lucas Oil family. Starting on May 6th, a portion of the proceeds from every bottle of Lucas Oil Hand Sanitizer sold will be donated to high-risk facilities and organizations including local and regional senior centers, homeless shelters, and more.

ATREND Converts Facility to Manufacture Plastic Shields ATREND, the maker of subwoofer enclosures, has designated 50,000 square feet of its facility to produce both face shields made of PETG plastic, and barrier protection shields. The latter can be used to shield a grocery store clerk or other worker from COVID-19 transmission from customers.

“Following the incredibly high demand for our alcohol-based hand sanitizer and the important role that product is playing in helping to keep people safe, we wanted to find additional ways to show our support and give back,” said Forrest Lucas, President and CEO of Lucas Oil Products. “There’s no better place to focus our efforts than right here at home in Indianapolis and Corona where the local communities have always shown us nothing but love and support.”

Maxxsonics USA continues to assist the fight against this global crisis by supporting local hospitals and businesses. Maxxsonics has now donated more than 25,000 masks and gloves across the Midwest offering assistance and support to those in need towards the battle against COVID-19. Alden Stiefel, President/CEO of Maxxsonics USA said, “Maxxsonics USA is committed to helping medical staff, hospitals, first responders, and various people any way we possibly can. We are excited to see other companies in the 12-volt industry join the efforts to help those in need.” Maxxsonics encourages everyone to join them in the movement for getting crucial medical supplies to those who are in need of them.

COBRA ELECTRONICS AIDS NATION’S TRUCKERS Cobra Electronics is sponsoring the “Fueling Our Heroes” tour, orchestrated by online trucking authority CDLLife, to provide fresh and healthy meals to truck drivers during this time of crisis. While truck drivers are crisscrossing the country and logging long hours to deliver much-needed supplies, many are often challenged with finding their next meal due to restaurant closures, reduced hours, and limited shopping options. Over the course of six days, the first leg of the Fueling Our Heroes tour visits eight states and makes 15 stops at highway rest areas from Missouri to Pennsylvania to distribute fresh meals and express gratitude to the nation’s truck drivers. “We are so thankful to the dedicated community of truck drivers who continue to log many hours and miles in order to deliver essential goods to our stores,

homes and hospitals during these uncertain times,” said Gail Babitt, CEO of Cedar Electronics. “For years we have been helping drivers safely get from point A to point B and today we are pleased to have this opportunity to support the Fueling Our Heroes tour and continue to help improve the driving experience.” “We were hearing from drivers having great difficulties accessing fresh food due to COVID-19 related closures, and knew we had to do something to help those on the front lines,” said Sadie Church, CDLLife. “This tour is a big thank you to the truck drivers out there who are delivering our groceries and essential medical supplies. We hope the public joins in to help the cause and allow us to add more cities to future trips, so we can show our gratitude to truck drivers from coast to coast.”

PANDEMIC RESPONSE

ORACLE LIGHTING DONATES N95 MASKS

ORACLE LIGHTING DEVELOPS VIRUS NEUTRALIZING UV-LIGHT FACE MASK FOR CONSUMER/MEDICAL USE

Oracle Lighting, an innovator in LED lighting solutions, has made a donation of 1,000 N95 respirator masks and nearly 500 surgical masks to the Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans to help its staff battle the COVID-19 crisis in Louisiana where PPE is much needed. “We want to do whatever we can to support those medical professionals on the front lines battling this pandemic, as New Orleans has been one of the most affected communities in the country,” said Justin Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting director of development. “Oracle Lighting works with several companies outside of the United States and these partners have more available PPE sources than we have here in the U.S. Some of them heard about the struggles that we were having across our country and, specifically, in the New Orleans area with the shortage of masks and other PPE.” Hartenstein explained that many of these suppliers are now helping out by including procured PPE in Oracle Lighting’s inbound shipments so that Hartenstein and his staff can donate to places in need. “We are now asking all of our suppliers do the same and we have more supplies on the way,” he added. “This is just the first donation that we plan to make. We will continue to import PPE from other countries with available supplies and donate to medical personnel that are struggling to help people with this virus and need adequate PPE made available to them as soon as possible.” Hartenstein said that after procuring the PPE supplies, Oracle was able to donate the much needed masks to Tulane Medical Center through Supplies for Saints, a group that is managing the collection of PPE for local hospitals. “Co-founding Supplies for Saints was such a crucial endeavor for us because we realized how important it was to keep our frontlines healthy so they could continue to care and heal those stricken with COVID-19,” said Kelly Becnel Rovetto, co-founder of Supplies for Saints. “These men and women deserve to feel safe that they are not bringing home this virus to their families or contracting it themselves. PPE donations like this make a big difference in the lives of these men and women.”

“N95 masks have been the go-to PPE for preventing exposure to COVID-19, but these only filter 95 percent of particulate,” explained Justin Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting director of product development. “Consumers need better assurance to be confident that they will not be exposed. The AIR device will neutralize that remaining five percent while sanitizing the contaminated mask at the same time. Studies have shown that respiratory pathogens on the outer surface of cloth masks can actually result in self-contamination, which is exactly what they are intended to prevent. Because if this, we see the unique UV irritation benefits of the AIR device as the best sanitization scenario for mitigating exposure to COVID-19 and other viruses.” Existing personal air filtration masks are designed to prevent inhalation of viruses by trapping the particles from the incoming air in the cloth material worn on the face. However, they are not designed to disinfect or sanitize the particles. Because of this, the masks can become saturated with live viruses, pathogens, bacterium, or other microorganisms attached to the fabric surfaces. Because the cloth mask becomes contaminated with use, washing a cloth mask is recommended by health officials. Unfortunately, most consumergrade laundry detergent does not contain disinfectant and, in fact,

14

PASMAG

studies show that pathogens can actually be spread in the wash and contaminate other laundry in the load. The AIR device is worn under any common face masks and utilizes a patent-pending system to sanitize the air while simultaneously neutralizing contaminants trapped in the cloth face mask by means of short-wave ultraviolet light exposure. The ultraviolet light source is produced via UV LEDs which are integrated into the device. The spectrum of ultraviolet light is separated into various ranges, with shortest-wavelength referred to as UV-C which is considered “germicidal UV”. “The AIR device is composed of a small cover made of an antimicrobial polymer which is worn on the face and attached with straps similar to a traditional face mask,” Hartenstein continued. “The user wears a traditional face mask (cloth mask, surgical mask, N95, etc.) over the device. A small rechargeable battery pack powers the device and can be manually turned on and off by the user. In addition to the antigermicidal LEDs, the device also contains UV-A LEDs which provide a wider light spectrum and visible light. The visible UV-A LED functions as an indicator that the device is on and working but provides minimal anti-microbial benefits.” Wavelengths between 200-300 nanometers, such as the LEDs uti-

lized in the AIR device, provide the most effective germicidal function. This is because the wavelength of UV-C irradiation utilizes photons to inactivate the virus which prevents the cell from replicating and infecting the body if inhaled. The AIR’s UV-C LED emitters are integrated into the airflow partition of the device which is designed to scrub the air and sterilize the cloth mask simultaneously.

IS IT SAFE? For years hospitals and labs have used Ultraviolet light for disinfection and medical sanitation against viruses. Commonly known as “Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation”, UVGI is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by disrupting their DNA in a manner which renders the cells inactive and unable to perform cellular functions. “UV-C light has been used in many applications such as the purification of drinking water for decades,” said Hartenstein. “While UV-C is part of the normal spectrum of sunlight, it is invisible and can cause sunburn with direct skin exposure. This was taken into account when developing the AIR and so the UV light is directed into the mask, away from the user, to prevent any direct skin exposure.”

In addition, the Sailun Group has provided essential site support to the construction of the two emergency infectious treatment hospitals in the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province — providing tires to the construction site that have since been put into active use.

4 WHEEL PARTS OFFERS FREE INSPECTIONS, ALIGNMENTS, AND TIRE ROTATIONS TO ESSENTIAL WORKERS TO MAY 31ST 4 Wheel Parts is offering free inspections, alignment and tire rotations to all first responders, medical and essential workers at 4 Wheel Parts installation locations through May 31st. “We want to thank all nurses, doctors, firefighters, police officers, EMTs and essential workers for all their efforts in these trying times. We want to give first responders an ease of mind when travelling to the front lines. 4 Wheel Parts wants to provide safe driving conditions and alleviate the fear of a missed routine service to their vehicle.”

Yokohama Tire is partnering with the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF) to help truckers and their families who have experienced an illness or injury that takes them off the road. SCF is a 501(c) (3), truck driver charity that helps overthe-road/regional semi-truck drivers and their families when an illness or injury has recently caused them to be out of work. In 2019 alone, SCF distributed $501,000 to 344 truckers and their families. “As we collectively face the challenges posed by the outbreak of COVID-19, the country is looking for ways to support the unsung heroes who are working behind the scenes,

such as the truck drivers, who are delivering the products necessary to help Americans maintain some sense of calm in this unchartered territory,” said Alan Holtschneider, Yokohama’s director of marketing. “Supporting the SCF during this critical time will help ensure that these drivers will have financial assistance available to them when they are in need.” In addition to donating a portion of its April commercial truck tire sales to the SCF, Yokohama is hoping to raise awareness of the SCF and their mission. Without their assistance, thousands of truckers would face significant financial hardship during times of medical need.

HARBOR FREIGHT DONATES PROTECTIVE GEAR TO HOSPITALS

Harbor Freight Tools has announced that it will donate its entire inventory of N95 masks, face shields, and 5- and 7-mil nitrile gloves to hospitals with 24-hour emergency rooms due to an ongoing shortage of the equipment. The company has asked that hospital procurement departments contact the retailer via an online portal to determine if the company can make a donation. If you or someone you know does not work at a hospital, but would like to give the name of a hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, email the company at hospitalhelp@harborfreight.com with the hospital’s city and state in the subject line, and Harbor Freight will follow up. Hospitals that can be assisted will be provided vouchers when the supplies are available for pickup at their local Harbor Freight store.

TO TITLE

JK AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN MAKES MASKS, INSPIRES HUNDREDS TO DO THE SAME Jeremy Katz, Owner of JK Automotive Designs, found out that his local hospital in Norwood, Massachusetts was in need of protective gear as they battled COVID-19. His son was born at Norwood Hospital, and his brother’s kids were born there too. Katz decided to do something to help. He found a design for 3D machining face shields, but when Katz tried it, it took 5 hours just to make two straps, let alone a single mask.

You need an adjustable rear control arm to optimize your tire contact by adjusting your camber. Be confident your arm is proven and reliable for the >1,000 pounds of force that it will be loaded with over and over again as you put your Mustang to the test. SPC’s forged aluminum adjustable arm (Part # 72370) features high rate rubber bushings to maintain OE noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels. PAS_2020_1-2pg_Mustang.indd 1 2020_PAS161-TunerHandbook_Pandemic.indd 17

He joined with JK employee Evan Collins, and they redesigned a protective face shield for a laser machine, so that a mask can now take 5 minutes to make. Katz has produced 100, and said, “If we had materials, we could make 500 a day.” He then posted his CAD design online, and said a hundred people including industry members around the country are now producing the protective face shields.

Story by Bill Braun

DOWN TO THE WIRE When you start building your car stereo system, the very first thought in your head is “Boy I wanna get good wire!” said not nearly enough people.

t’s a universal truth: wiring is as underappreciated as it is vital. Get lower quality wire, and the system suffers; as the amps get starved for current, they get hotter and don’t deliver the power you paid for. They may even start shutting down. And yes, poor power wire may even be a potential fire hazard. The difference isn’t easy to spot. Big wire looks like - well - big wire. What you don’t see is how much actual wire is in the cable itself, or how many strands are in the cable, as opposed to a bunch of jacketing with an anemic amount of metal inside. Is it cheaper? Of course. Is it safer, or more flexible for easier installation? Probably not.

For more than two decades, KnuKonceptz has concentrated on engineering power wire, and the connections that ultimately deliver power to your system. As one of the few companies that specialize in this particular science, President Bill Greenberg appreciates the importance of a solid, reliable connection. “Let’s get our customer the best bang for their buck. Let's make the wire bigger while staying in the same wire gauge. Going direct to the consumer, giving them a better product, and let the public decide. We were one of the first to embrace CCA (CopperClad Aluminum). If you oversize the aluminum, you can get close to the

“IN ADDITION TO WIRE, KNUKONCEPTZ ALSO ENGINEERS CUSTOM TERMINALS AND DISTRIBUTION BLOCKS.” conductivity [of Oxygen-Free Copper]. It’s a good value.” In addition to wire, KnuKonceptz also engineers custom terminals and distribution blocks. One of their most innovative - and popular - is their Ultimate Battery Terminal. The manufacturer listened to their customers during the development of the termi-

nal, paying special attention to those who wanted to add power wire while avoiding the removal of the factory battery terminal. “Say you are adding a 1/0-gauge wire, but don’t want to destroy the OEM connection. We make a top post adapter that screws into it horizontally,” explain Greenberg. “You can then connect the factory terminal there. Then add whatever terminals you want to the connectors with zero modifications to the vehicle.” The terminal uses a zinc alloy, which has the same conductivity as brass but is more affordable. The KNF power distribution block is another example of approaching power distribution from an unconventional angle. The block has multiple configurations, allowing the user to potentially serve as both a power and ground block. The block can facilitate fused power for as many as four

amplifiers, or the block can be altered in multiple configurations to accommodate power and ground in a single frame by moving hardware around internally. “It can do the functions of multiple blocks,” Greenberg said. “The goal was to save space, and ultimately some of the budget.” Mr. Greenberg also voiced his priority on education, and truth in advertising. Look on their eBay or Amazon pages. You’ll see the type of wire and maximum amperage is plainly stated. “We have a scale on our eBay and Amazon pages to help,” said Greenberg. “It shows you the wattage the cable is rated for, it shows you the gauge and the materials the cable is made out of.” Wiring is an especially difficult facet of car audio to explain to the uninitiated. To help an aspiring DIY-er, KnuKonceptz added several

educational articles to their online Support section, with more on the way. The company also decided to be a sponsor of www.caraudiofabrication.com, a site dedicated to car audio education. As the car audio hardcore will tell you, this is a vital part of a “Big Three” upgrade: battery and alternator being the other two. With a little research, your sound system can play hard, sound great, and last for years. For more information, visit www. knukonceptz.com

Kalvin Malli Takes Home the Title of Tuner Battlegrounds 7 Champion with his 1990 Nissan 300zx Story by

Adam Gordon

//

Photography by

David Barnhouse

Kalvin Malli of MalliMotorworks is no stranger to building well-rounded cars for a variety of purposes. In addition to doing more engine swaps and modifications for friends and customers than he has done for himself, Malli had also built a 1990 Nissan 240sx with an RB20-swap which went on to climb high in the ranks of the Tuner Battlegrounds finals the year before he finally won. That building experience would pay off in spades as he assembled his next personal build, the 1990 Nissan 300zx you see here - the same car which would take him to the top spot of Tuner Battlegrounds 7.

alli’s love for the 300zx platform runs as far back as he’s had his driver’s license. When he was searching online for his first car, he stumbled onto an ad for a twin-turbo 300zx in pearl white. Despite the fact that he knew he couldn’t afford it, he asked the owner to bring it by so he could check it out. “This car pulled up, and my jaw was on the ground,” he says. “It was perfect in every way. It literally looked like it came fresh out of the factory.” The guy who owned the car was nice enough to ask Malli if he

M

wanted to drive the car around the block, and from the first moment he let off the throttle and heard the BOVs chirp, he was hooked. Malli went on to build several S13 240sx models - eight of them, in fact - before dabbling in a couple other projects until one day, when the time was right, he pulled the trigger on the platform that had eluded him for years. Almost immediately, he began modifying the car with a small budget and minimal working space in his parents’ 2-car garage. With a 2JZ from a Toyota Aristo, and a CD009 transmission, Malli had big

plans. With some help from Brad at Swap Shop Garage, the Aristo harness was converted to work with the Z32 platform and his Haltech Elite ECU. The foundation was officially in place. WIth his original intentions to build a modernized 2JZ-powered sports car that could maintain reliability while making great power on the street, Malli kept things pretty simple. Most engine and drivetrain modifications were chosen to either maintain reliability or boost power without going overboard. A Twisted Motion GTX3582r turbocharger mated to a Driftmotion turbo manifold and an HKS wastegate takes care of the added boost, bumping power to a respectable 500 whp. That tasteful minimalism continues throughout the entire build, and is most noticeably appreciated on the 300zx’s exterior. A simple front bumper from KBD, side skirts from Stillen, and Twin Z Design rear spats and diffuser make up the mix-matched kit at ground level, and a molded WINFactory replica wing all go the distance in redefining the Z32 silhouette without drastically altering the car’s original essence. Some custom molded fog light ducts and J-Spec tail lights go the distance in setting the car’s style apart. Sleek, clean, and looking like speed itself - the way the Z32 gods intended. Inside the cockpit, Malli went for a more exotic feel with his creature comforts. Leather Corbeau seats with Interior Innovations leather and suede seats covers hold driver and pas-

sengers in place, and a Nova Suede dash with red-stitching was made by hand to set the interior apart from any Z32 before it. LED lighting is found throughout the dash and interior for a clean and crisp look that suits the rest of the car perfectly with the glow from the Glowshift gauges. Of course, no modernized interior is complete without ample music listening power, so a Kenwood head unit serves as the source unit for a complete set of Skar speakers and matching 10-inch subwoofer. Back when Malli’s car sat in the PASMAG booth at the 2019 SEMA show, the car was in an eye-catching OEM red, but once he finished moving from New York to Texas to open his own shop space, he got to thinking about that pearl white 300zx that hooked him all those years ago. As soon as he had some free time to give his own car some attention, he wrapped the entire car in pearl white vinyl, emulating the very car that kicked off his passion.

These days, Malli stays extremely busy with MalliMotorworks. Despite that, he tells us he still intends to continue working on the 300zx, and even though it was built as a reliable street car that could hold its ground at shows, he also intends to bring it to the track and properly beat on it. We can’t wait to see this thing unleashed. Kalvin’s work speaks for itself, so if you’re near Seguin, Texas, don’t hesitate to hit up MalliMotorworks if you need his help!

here was a time not too long ago when the S13.5 was the hottest thing in the rear-wheel drive import tuner scene. Older readers will remember a few years’ span in which several S13 240sx features boasted an S15 front end conversion. The front end of the S15 Silvia remains one of the most desirable looks in the JDM sports car catalog today, and remains especially appealing in the United States as enthusiasts patiently wait for the S15 Silvia to achieve import legality under the 25-year rule. Soon, guys. Soon.

T

2020_PAS161-TunerHandbook_AnthonyDo_S13.5.indd 40

For those who don’t feel like waiting, the front end conversion to S13s and S14s is a route that requires some finesse to pull off well, but looks incredible when done right. Luckily for us, Tuner Battlegrounds 7 runner-up and founder of Do Boy’s Garage, Anthony Do, had always wanted a “Sil-Eighty” after watching Initial D, and since he had a 1993 Nissan 240sx in his possession, it was only a matter of time before his car went under the knife. Not wanting to settle for just the front end conversion, and always looking to push the envelope with his builds, Do hatched a plan for an S-chassis unlike any before it.

His original intentions were to build a SEMA-quality car in his own garage, so the first order of business for Do was to make the Sil-Eighty build idea truly his own. For those who aren’t familiar, Sil-Eighty - or Sil80 - was a slang term to describe a Silvia front end on a 180sx chassis. Typically completed with an S13 Silvia front end, Do saw the potential to do something different with the S15 Silvia front end by combining the conversion with Rocket Bunny’s S13 and S15 kits. Once the two kits and his S15 OEM fenders showed up from Japan, it was game on. Body work for this build was not without its challenges. In addition to the complicated task of fabricating hybrid S13/ S15 front fenders, Hurricane Harvey landed in Houston during the build, and that set the body shop back at least three months. Finally, after a bit of delay outside of his control, Do had his S13.5 back in his hands, complete with a hybrid Rocket Bunny kit with excellent fit and finish, painted in a sleek Avalanche Gray. This would serve as the foundation for the rest of the build. From there, D2 Racing air suspension paired to a VERA air management system would allow the newly widened fenders to sit perfectly over a constantly changing wheel and tire setup. With the chassis and suspension now taken care of by way of Energy Suspension bushings, Cusco strut bars, and Offbeat Garage subframe risers, the S13.5 was ready for its next total overhaul - the engine bay. While KA and SR engines are the reigning champions of popularity in the platform, Do was determined to make his build stand out in all aspects. He sourced a 2JZ-GTE so he could bring the power level up substantially. With the help of a Precision 6766 turbocharger, HKS cam gears, NST lightweight pulleys, and a Tial wastegate/BOV combo, Do was able to turn up the boost to produce a respectable 500 whp. Shaving the bay and making everything pretty goes a long way at shows, and definitely put Do’s build one step closer to SEMA-caliber.

Assisting the 2JZ’s drivetrain, which was now a mix of the R154 transmission and a Nismo 1.5-way differential connected by a custom 1-piece driveshaft, is a Competition Clutch and flywheel setup, as well as a CUBE Speed short shifter. Keeping the power to the ground is a set of Toyo R888R tires measuring 265/35/18 and 315/30/18 in the front and rear respectively. Those Toyo tires have been wrapped around a variety of wheels during Do’s ownership. On the SEMA floor for the Tuner Battlegrounds 7 finale, the car featured TE37s, but today it sits on an 18-inch set of SSR SP1 wheels. Not one to leave an aspect of his builds untouched, Do then turned his attention to the S13 interior. Once he had sorted out some custom suede Braum Racing seats and matching 5-point harnesses, as well as a Cusco roll cage, he wanted to do something of his own creation to spice up the ‘90s interior. With a careful hand, he turned the OEM dash into a suede custom dashboard that added a touch of class to an otherwise bare-bones Nissan interior. When Do first started building his S13.5, his intentions were to take the Sil-Eighty conversion into the modern era and land it among prestigious company alongside SEMA-caliber builds. Thanks to that vision, the 1993 240sx he built looked perfectly at home in the PASMAG booth at SEMA 2019. Congratulations for making it to the SEMA floor, Anthony!

Nismo Competition Oil 2193E 5W40 $19.45 | Motul.com

Motul has developed the next-generation of 8100 X-clean, dubbed "Gen2," that is approved for the latest BMW LL-04 standards, while also updating the product to meet new standards for approvals from MercedesBenz, Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche. This new product has increased turbocharger cleanliness and protection, increased shear stability, and more consistent oil performance over a drain interval to keep your vehicle running strong.

To say that this oil was developed especially for the Nissan GT-R VR38DETT engine is not an exaggeration. This high-performance engine oil has been developed and tested in the Nissan GT-R Nismo RC, the Nissan GT-R Club Track Edition, and in 24 Hours Nürburgring. Formulated for low friction while maintaining generous filming properties, this Nismo-Motul motor oil will minimize engine wear where pressures and loads are highest.

RED LINE SYNTHETIC OIL

75W85 GL-5 Gear Oil $17.49 | RedLineOil.com Known formerly as LightWeight Gear Oil, this product is popular in many late model BMW, Dodge, Ford, GM, Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota models. Applications include differential oil, final drive oil, gear oil, and transfer case fluid. Contains additional friction modifiers for suitability with clutch-type limited slip differentials - for most LSDs, no additional friction modifiers are required. This product is not designed for use in most manual transmissions or transaxles with synchronizers, as extreme slipperiness may cause shifting problems.

RED LINE SYNTHETIC OIL

SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner $11.95 | RedLineOil.com SI-1 is for drivers who want to get the most out of their vehicle, and is designed for use in both fuel injected and carbureted engines. Due to inadequate octane capacity on the part of modern oil refineries, additives to pump gasoline often have a negative effect on vehicle engines by choking fuel injector tips with deposits, which cause the engine’s fuel economy and overall performance to suffer. Red Line’s SI-1 works to reverse this process by thoroughly cleaning injector tips.

VALVOLINE

High Performance Gear Oil Valvoline.com Valvoline’s High Performance Gear Oil is a thermally stable, extreme-pressure gear lubricant that withstands severe temperatures and shock loading while providing excellent anti-wear, antiscuffing, rust and corrosion protection.

OVERLA WHERE WE’RE GOING, WE DON’T NEED ROADS. Words and photos by

and Dan Kunz

Adam Gordon

f there is one scene in the automotive industry that has seen explosive growth over the past couple of years, it is without a doubt the “overlanding” scene. You’ve seen the vehicles: SUVs, CUVs, trucks, cars - you name it. There was even a dedicated overlanding area at SEMA 2019. Often outfitted with rooftop tents, a variety of backwoods survival gear, and off-road capable suspension and wheel setups, overlanding is an extension of the off-road market that takes things a step further. So what is it, exactly? We sat down with Dan Kunz, founder of GXOR and overlander of several years, to get a better look at the overlanding world.

I

HEY DAN. COULD YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR OUR AUDIENCE? I am the founder of GXOR (GX Offroad), which is the group I started focused on the Lexus GX platform, but with an off-road/ overland twist. I started it in 2016, and it has grown rapidly on social media, and even got the attention of Lexus, who built a concept vehicle tagged with GXOR, and toured the car show circuit and off-road events over the last year. I have been into the off-road scene (not overland) for nearly 20 years now. I started

54

PASMAG

with day and weekend trips up to the Appalachians in an old Toyota Land Cruiser, then gradually got more involved and built the trucks I owned to do more rock crawling and harder “wheeling,” which is more about obstacles and the difficulty of the terrain. I moved into the more overland scene around 2010. I still enjoyed the difficulty, but I found the journey was more enjoyable. Trails versus the trip. Obstacles versus company. It was a pretty big revelation.

ANDING WHAT IS OVERLANDING, AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM OFF-ROADING? Overlanding is about the journey. It has to do with finding a place, finding a path, and exploring that in a capable, well prepared way. Off-road is about the trail you are on, the obstacles, driving skills, etc. It is the root enabler of overlanding, but overlanding is different. You focus on the experience, the planning, and preparedness. Some might say you focus on the people you’re with versus what you are on. It is the “stop to smell the roses” brother of offroad.

OTHER THAN EXTREMELY COOL ROOF-MOUNTED TENTS AND OFF-ROAD TIRES, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR MODIFICATIONS TO OVERLANDING VEHICLES? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE POPULAR PLATFORMS IN THE OVERLANDING SCENE? Mild to wild! You see people from overseas with literal houses on Unimogs. You can see a contractor with a cap on his pickup working his way across the country. You see purpose built SUVs with onboard (or rooftop) camping setups or trailers. The most common platforms you see are Toyotas and Jeeps, and more and more are using whatever they have to do so - even Subarus! The platform is less important than the process. Overlanding seems more like a ritual of thought, preparation, and execution to get out there and see places that most may never see.

The recovery and protection are usually up there, along with storage and convenience for long term remote living. Bumpers, winches, recovery boards, sliders, snorkels for deep water, and more of the recovery and protection. I have seen some amazing built-in kitchen and refrigerator setups in rigs that allow them to live off the grid for weeks at a time. Solar is becoming very popular, as are heating and cooling solutions. I have a trailer

that is literally a compact off-road capable house that folds down to manageable size. It was built in South Africa and has hot and cold onboard water, a shower, running sink, kitchen, fridge, bar, and two queen beds. Overlanders can sometimes get a little over the top on these things I guess.

OVERLANDING HOW DO THE EARLY DAYS OF OVERLAND OFF-ROADING DIFFER FROM THE NEWER EXAMPLES WE’VE SEEN?

WHAT MADE OVERLANDING EXPLODE IN POPULARITY OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS? I think it is a combination of a few things. The first being the low cost of entry. You can overland in a basic vehicle with most of the normal camping gear people that enjoy the outdoors have. Then you meet people. You learn. You adapt your kit. You upgrade. As more people want to explore the US and close to home, overlanding is a great way to see new places and not spend a lot of money until you are ready to. Then, when you are

good and hooked, you can step up and go all in, and extend to even further adventures as your kit improves and you learn. I know people that started with a basic vehicle, upgraded over time, and recently completed a multi-week journey to the arctic circle. That allure of grand adventure without having to work on the big dollar upgrades in suspension, tires, and more is enticing so many more to try it.

The running joke is that overlanding is pretending like you are homeless. I tend to agree. The early days were people that wanted to get out there and see things, so they did. Ground tents, basic camping supplies - the accessories for it didn’t really exist, so you just worked with what you had. Most early “overlanders” were actually out off-roading, and simply kept going. There’s more to see, so why not just pack better and keep going? Friends of mine took their vehicles from an event in Moab and traveled nearly entirely off-road from Utah to Arizona and lived off the grid. They were technically “wheeling,” but they had trailers and a hot home cooked meal, supplies, and everything you could want along the way. That is what has changed: technology, comfort, and the convenience of bringing it all with you.

DO YOU SEE ANY NEW EMERGING TRENDS IN THE OVERLAND OFFROADING SPACE? I am seeing overland builds get bigger (off-road RVs) in a lot of ways, built more for off-road in others, and smaller (Subarus and even motorcycles) in many other cases. I think people are just wanting to get involved, and they are finding a way to do so that works for them. More capability off-road, and way more tech to maintain comfort and connection are happening in almost every product, vehicle, and group I watch. Satellite technologies keep people

56

PASMAG

feeling safe when very far out. Trucks are getting bigger tires and the off-road aspect is being added back in. I have even seen people start to work from adventure! Take a laptop, find a hotspot, and work while you explore so you can extend the trip. I think you will see even more creative solutions for communication, cooking, comfort, and safety coming as more and more people adopt the way of an overlander. It’s a very dynamic community!

HEADLIGHTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

EXAMINING WHAT IT TAKES TO CREATE THE HIGHEST QUALITY AFTERMARKET LIGHTING WITH ORACLE LIGHTING. Adam Gordon Justin Hartenstein, Anthony Hostetler, and Justin Perret. Photography by Xototl Media and Brandon Funck

Story by

With notes from

Anyone who has been to a big show over the last few years has no doubt seen some impressive aftermarket lighting on a variety of cars. Color-changing, controllable RGB lighting is more popular than ever to enthusiasts looking to add some flare to their vehicles, but opting for cheaper or lower quality lighting can have the opposite of the desired effect. When it comes to lighting, you get what you pay for most of the time, and with ORACLE Lighting’s R&D process, you’re buying a guarantee of OEM or better quality and fitment. The new Supra is a perfect example.

ORACLE Lighting Industrial Designer Anthony Hostetler refining the 3D model of a Circuit Board which will eventually become a physical product.

DESIGN Anthony Hostetler, Industrial Designer at ORACLE Lighting, explains the early stages: “From a research and design standpoint, the Supra was going to be a fun project because of how new the car is. After disassembling the headlight and getting into the circuitry, the process really moved at a rapid pace. Analyzing all measurements of the current circuitry, through a digital caliper, measuring got all the way down to hundredths of a millimeter. All this data was drawn in a computerized 2D format for precision. After completing the 2D computer drawing, a 3D model was constructed. With everything drafted out, it is a really quick process to build all the necessary parts before hand-off to engineering. This included LED placement, hole placement, wiring, etc. 3D CAD models are great for sharing because it gives an exact representation to what you as the designer envision for a product. Sometimes there are some minor tweaks to the design, but that is part of the collaboration between the design and manufacture of a new product.

From a designer standpoint, you see the entire product come around from start to finish. Starting from a simple drawn out design, to it evolving into a physical piece that can improve a car's style. It is always rewarding to see that end result.”

QUALITY CONTROL Justin Hartenstein, Director of Product Development at ORACLE Lighting, explains why certain decisions are made in development with the end consumer’s ease of use in mind: “There are a few important criteria we identify and CTQ items (Critical to Quality) which we focus on during the design process. The first is ease of installation. It is important for a good customer experience that the installation is not overly burdensome. If it is an intricate installation, then we have to be sure that we have tools in place to aid the user or installer. That may include items such as special hardware kitted with the product, providing in-depth videos of the process, or creating diagrams to help simplify the process. In this case, with the Supra ColorSHIFT upgrade

ORACLE Lighting Product Specialist Justin “JP” Perret performing quality check on LED board.

the installation process is incredibly simple. The installer does not need to dissemble the headlights, the DRL Circuit Board is accessible from the back side of the light. Simply remove the factory DRL Circuit Board and install the new ORACLE ColorSHIFT RGB+A Circuit Board using the original hardware and connect the boards to the ColorSHIFT controller. I wish that all of the headlight installations were this easy. Another CTQ is features, we want to add additional features for the user without losing any of the factory features. In this case we are converting the very predominant DRL light in the Supra headlights to a color-changing LED setup. The user can still set the lights to white for normal on-road DRL functionality, but they can also change the color, brightness, and patterns of the DRL light. This comes in handy for car shows, meets, cruises, and other “offroad” activities. The Lights can be synced with our BC1 controller ColorSHIFT app which gives the user the ability to change the light options from their smartphone. In addition to the color changing RGB function this is a RGB+A device which adds amber LEDs to perform a turn signal function. “

“FROM A RESEARCH AND DESIGN

STANDPOINT, THE

SUPRA WAS GOING TO BE A FUN PROJECT BECAUSE OF HOW

NEW THE CAR IS.”

CATERING TO CUSTOMIZATION + CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUSPENSION FOR YOUR NEEDS

Andrew Wallace Adam Gordon Photography by Matt Bryan

Story by

With notes from

ISC Suspension has been at the forefront of suspension development for the past decade and then some, and because of that, they offer various customization options when ordering their suspension, just like many other suspension manufacturers. For a first-time buyer, the options can be overwhelming, which is why we sat down with Andrew Wallace of ISC Suspension to break down coilover customization. Take it away, Andrew!

In the world of aftermarket suspension, modifications can seem endless. Customization to meet unique goals is often needed; but does everyone need a “custom” aftermarket coilover? It can get overwhelming quickly, and making a coilover purchase can be a big investment. There is a lot of great information out there, but also a lot of misinformation too. We created a recipe to help streamline the process of catering to an individual’s needs, by offering the consumer several “semicustom” off the shelf options, but still allowing for full blown custom setups when needed as well. More on these options later.

HOW TO DETERMINE SPRING RATES AND VALVING. When someone reaches out to inquire about getting suspension for their car, I always start with asking; what do you use the car for currently, and what do you plan on using the car for? These questions are simple, and may seem obvious to ask, but they help us identify what the customer may need, vs what they initially think they need when they first inquire. For example not everyone has the ability to have an awesome street car, and a track car, so many people use their car for both. A daily driver for the 9-5, and on the weekends doing some club events, like HPDE, Autocross, grassroots drifting, etc. If these questions weren’t asked, then most likely the customer would have ordered or asked for our track/race dampers when in reality, based on their true needs, the street sport dampers would have been a more well-rounded option for their lifestyle. Having options and customization is great, but they need to cater to the vehicle itself, and most importantly what is done with that vehicle. Identify the true needs, then customize. This gets the best result. Larger body cars or crossovers deserve coilovers too! Say for example a 5 series or 7 series BMW, or a crossover like a Subaru Forester. Catering to a specific lifestyle and accommodating for that along with the vehicle specifications itself are details to take into consideration. On a forester we often use an 8/6 or 10/8 kilogram spring rate (depending on what chassis Forester) for our street comfort and street sport dampers. If the customer uses their Forester to tow, or go camping on the weekends we sometimes bump them up 2 kg in the rear, to accommodate for the additional load. Many of these people carry passengers and drive to work daily, a street comfort damper or street sport camper can help keep the car daily driver friendly, and family approved. One of the things that sets ISC Suspension apart from its competitors is that we offer 3 different valving options for all ISC N1 and ISC Basic coilover kits. The valving on each was chosen and designed to suit a different customer’s need.

MONOTUBE VS TWINTUBE - WHICH IS A BETTER CHOICE FOR YOU?

STREET COMFORT Our Street Comfort valving is the softest “off the shelf” damping we offer and gives the customer the closest to a factory ride quality. Although it shares the same spring rates as the street sport, the valving and shim stack are completely different. The Street Comfort valving paired with our 32-way rebound adjustability allows the customer to dial in their preferred ride. This is great for someone who wants to lower their vehicle without having the stereotypical “harsh coilover ride” on the street. As the driver dials in more rebound damping, the valving curve actually overlaps slightly with our Street Sport valving. This gives the driver the ability to dial in a softer feel when driving on the street, but also the ability to dial it in to be more firm for more aggressive driving.

STREET SPORT The ISC Street Sport valving is far and away our top selling platform with the most versatility! Roughly 65% of our customer base opt for the Street Sport valving. Why? It’s perfect for someone looking for a damper curve for daily driving and someone that also uses their vehicle on the weekends for motorsport type events; whether that be canyon runs, track days, auto cross, drifting, or time attack. This is the ultimate suspension tool for the weekend warrior. A wide range of damping adjustment will allow the driver to change the ride of their vehicle to something relatively soft when needed or turn it up during those motorsport events.

Another term you might see in product descriptions from various brands are whether they are mono-tube or twin-tube construction. What does that actually mean, and should it matter to you? Here is a breakdown of features, pros and cons of the two popular suspension designs when compared to each other. MONO-TUBE In a mono-tube shock absorber, the shocks components are contained within one tube. A mono-tube system contains a shell case which works as a cylinder. Within that cylinder you would find a piston valve, oil, and gas. The construction of a mono-tube does also include some differences compared to the twin-tube design. A mono-tube design utilizes a free piston which separates the oil chamber from the gas chamber within the shell case. TWIN-TUBE In a twin-tube shock absorber there are two cylinders: One cylinder is set inside the shell case, and the second cylinder contains the piston valve which moves up and down within this second cylinder known as the “inner cylinder”. With a twin-tube design, there is no piston or barrier between the oil chamber and gas chamber.

TRACK / RACE Our Track/Race valving is the most aggressive damping setup we offer. How does it differ from the Street Sport? This is a common question we get. If you overlayed the dyno graphs of the Street Sport and the Track/Race valving, you’ll find that the hardest setting on our Street Sport valving is just shy of the softest setting on the Track/Race valving. We only suggest the Track/Race valving for dedicated track cars that generally get towed to and from events. This valving would also be good for race cars that are very dependent on using aerodynamics (large front splitters, canards, flat bottoms, rear diffusers, large rear wings, etc). The spring rates are also higher on these, usually about 2 kg or more compared to the Street Comfort or Street Sports.

CUSTOM SPRING RATES This can be a very common question that we hear from customers that are reading information posted in online forums, etc. The ISC R&D team has spent a good amount of time developing and engineering our 3 valving options and pairing spring rates accordingly with each chassis (total vehicle weight as well as weight distribution throughout the chassis comes into play here). There are certainly times though that the pairing we’ve made doesn’t accomplish what the driver needs.

Pros of Mono-Tube • As temperature increases, oil is able to release heat with less effort. • Zero restrictions on installation angles. • Less prone to cavitation • Larger oil capacity and greater heat dissipation allows for a stable damping force that is continuous. • Air is not able to penetrate the oil or gas since they are completely separated. • 100% efficiency through all temps. • The piston valve is larger in a monotube design which allows for a wider area of pressure. In turn this means the shock can create even a subtle damping force precisely.

CATERING TO CUSTOMIZATION

MONOTUBE

DUALTUBE

Cons of Mono-Tube • A stiffer ride is expected because an injection of high pressured gas is required in the structural design. • This high pressured gas can also lead to a higher amount of stress on seals which can cause more friction. • More expensive to manufacture • When there is external damage or force on the shell case, it directly affects the inner cylinder. Pros of Twin-Tube • External damage to the shell case does not effect the shock absorber. • The twin-tube design provides a superior manufacturing process which keeps the cost of production low. • Gas pressure is kept low thanks to the base valve, this creates a more comfortable ride. • Low gas pressure reduces stress on seals and also keeps friction to a minimum. Cons of Twin-Tube • The construction causes difficulties when installing. • Aeration is possible since the oil and gas chambers are not separated. • Size of Piston is greatly decreased compared to the mono-tube design. • Oil capacity is reduced in comparison to the the mono-tube. • Low Pressure – Generally very Soft • Small Pistons, more prone to heat and limited on damping • CAVITATION- Fluid and gas mix, exponential performance loss up to 35% • 1 Directional Mounting

ARE ALL COILOVER SPRINGS CREATED EQUAL? So we summarized spring rates earlier, how and why we develop certain spring rates for specific platforms, and how we choose the suggested spring rates for our multiple valving options, and even why and when custom spring rates might be needed; but wait there’s more! Not to overwhelm the entry level suspension buyer who just wants to lower their street car, but for the more tech savvy who demand more from their track car or street monster; seeking upgraded springs can be a great add-on for any coilover brand. Whether it is to shave weight, increase the performance of their existing

coilover, or get a custom spring rate/length that “off the shelf” springs don’t offer, upgraded coilover springs can help bring an existing suspension system to the next level. Here's an in-house example: Triple S springs. The Triple S spring stroke is typically 10% more than most standard springs when comparing the same spring lengths. Due to having more spring pitch, the Triple S typically has less coils than most springs. Less coils and more pitch combine to give the spring more travel. The benefit to the customer is that the Triple S spring can be the same length and same spring rate, but offer more comfort due to all three of the advantages mentioned above; less weight, more pitch and more stroke!

All ISC Suspension systems use the mono-tube design for performance purposes along with the fact that the pros of the mono-tube design outweigh its cons.
