EDITOR’S DESK WITH MARK PEREIRA

GET CONNECTED echnology is often taken for granted these days. As automotive enthusiasts, we’re always quick to embrace and often benefit from new technology as part of our daily lifestyle. From downloading advanced ECU tunes and diagnostic software to finding rare JDM parts online, it seems we instinctively gravitate to convenient technology and web browsing widgets well ahead of the masses. You don’t need to look far to see our sport compact culture fuels online forums around the world and runs rampant on online communities like MySpace and Facebook. This is how we stay connected, admire each others rides and share our automotive passion regardless of what we drive, who we are, and where we live. Our scene has no boundaries, as the culture of automotive tuning is truly a universal language. I can’t tell you how often we’ve overcome language and cultural barriers with fellow tuners around the globe. We’ve formed strong friendships with enthusiasts in Asia, Europe, South America and more by just using the universal hand signal to ‘pop the hood’ or showing them photos of our own project cars (which I carry in my wallet). The bond which unites all of us is the obsession and endless passion found deep inside every enthusiast. Modern technology has allowed our community to stay connected and offer instant access to each other 24/7. Before our current plethora of online resources, popular forums and virtual communities, our only outlet to gather with fellow enthusiast was at local parking lot meets or hanging out at tuner-friendly shops. Although these old school grassroots meets still play a large part in the scene, our online tuning community is stronger than ever, welcoming newbies and linking more enthusiasts together per year than any event ever could. Will online communities ever replace the actual events and meets that bring

T

us together? I doubt it. Will we prefer watching events on our iPhones instead of experiencing them in person? Not likely. But anyway you look at it, online communities are here to stay and growing at a rapid pace as the most convenient way to connect us together. They provide a place to share opinions, ideas, photos, videos and exchange smack talk. Plus

A: Hi Jose, To use the Streetwires capacitors, you need to have an amplifier. The capacitors are used to supply instantaneous current to an amplifiers’ power supply, and they can’t be connected directly to a woofer. I suggest you have a chat with your favorite dealer, who can help you find what you need, and get your Powerstations hooked up. Good luck!

LISTENUP

Old School vs. New School

’ve spent the better part of the last 35 years working with all kinds of audio gear. Home equipment, pro gear, car audio, I’ve even done some work designing and tuning systems for a couple of OEM car manufacturers. Over the years, I’ve seen all sorts of car audio trends come and go… I remember spring reverbs, installing Garrard turntables in vans, under-dash “power boosters,” self-powered 6x9’s and many other questionable fads. I’ve been there as audio formats have evolved. I remember repairing 8-track endless loop tapes, and playing them in my car with my new Craig Powerplay under dash player, with a pack of matches shoved under the left corner of the tape to compensate for what I know now was improperly adjusted head azimuth. I remember selling my first under-dash cassette deck system, which if memory serves, was a Pioneer “Supersystem.” The components were a KP66G cassette player, (underdash, no radio) and a GM40 amplifier, with a pair of TS-695 6x9’s in early 1978. You got the deck, amp and speakers for around a grand, and installation was extra.

I

20

I installed my first car CD player in 1985. I recall it was also a Pioneer unit, (but not sure on the exact model) but I do remember it sold for about 900 bucks, and it only had 1 set of outputs, no internal amplifier, and it didn’t have a tuner in it either. Ah, how times have changed. While all this reminiscing is good for the soul, it also brings back lots of memories of how bloody terrible some of those early products were. In case some of you think I’ve been dipping a bit too deep in the Guinness or got hold of some bad peyote, I should tell you all of this has come flooding back to me because of two conversations I’ve recently had. One with my good friend Lew, a fellow music lover/audiophile who’s roughly my age and recalls many of the same products I do. Late one evening while sitting and listening to some of my old vinyl, we started reminiscing about our old car systems. He began lamenting that you just couldn’t get the kind of performance we had “in the old days” from modern car audio products. He honestly believed both of his old amplifiers, a Rockford Fosgate Punch 75 (circa 1987) or his beloved Orion HCCA-225 would “kill” a new car audio amplifier. When I got done laughing,

I suddenly realized he was looking at me like I’d lost my mind, and he was actually serious! Part of the reason for Lew’s temporary loss of reason can be attributed to him having nothing but OEM systems in his cars for the last 10 years. He seems to get a new car about as often as I replace my wiper blades, and simply couldn’t be bothered modifying them. And then as fate would have it, a few days later I heard from a young reader who wanted to know if a vintage car amp selling on eBay for $400.00 would perform significantly better than a new amp for the same price. Before I could answer, he went on to tell me he knew the older amp was better, but was wondering how much better? Holy cow! Actually, this type of statement is fairly common on the public online forums and it certainly wasn’t the first time I’d heard this viewpoint, so let me here and now, once and for all, set the record straight. For the last 20 odd years, I have made a living measuring, comparing, and listening to car audio products. I have performed thousands of test reports, on all sorts of equipment from head units to signal processors and amplifiers, as well as speakers. I’ve built countless systems, and

LISTENUP Vintage car audio products are very cool if you appreciate them for what they are, simply a piece of history... Maybe someone should start a car audio museum?“ spent thousands of hours listening and tweaking. And I’m here to tell ya, each year, the overall performance of our systems get a little better, and the average price of technology drops. This was underlined for me recently when I helped a young enthusiast pick out and install a nice little system in his Subaru WRX. We pulled out the OEM radio and 4 factory speakers, and replaced the stock system with a Kenwood head unit, 2 pairs of Boston Acoustics speakers, 2 Kicker amplifiers and a JL Audio subwoofer. The entire system cost him less than $1,200 bucks, which is actually less than that old Pioneer “Supersystem” would have cost back in 1978. And that old system obviously had no radio, no MP3, no iPod control, no subwoofer, rear speakers only, and about 25% of the power in the modern system. Vintage car audio products are very cool if you appreciate them for what they are, simply a piece of history. While there were a few (very few) exceptional products that could still probably hold their own against today’s gear, by and large the majority of vintage car audio products are vastly inferior to modern products and engineering. While I know Lew has many fond memories of his Rockford Punch and Orion amps, those memories are simply overly romanticized as part of human nature. You have to recall these were the “glory days” of car audio, and the pride and enjoyment of those systems provided memories lasting well over 20 years later. I had to remind Lew that not only were the power supply devices replaced in that amp several times in a couple of years, the Punch 75 had no internal crossover, it used internal fuses that blew at inopportune moments, much lower quality components and construction than modern products, poor efficiency, and it was priced around $600 bucks. For that money, you got an amplifier that would develop a total of around 300 watts, and it was wired using Molex plugs! Any modern Rockford amp would offer superior performance. The same money today, even if we do nothing to adjust for inflation, will buy double the power, with modern protection circuitry, and fully adjustable 22

high and low pass crossovers. Plus, the new amplifier has improved efficiency, better signal to noise performance, and high quality terminals that don’t require butt splices! While I certainly enjoyed the performance of my car systems back in the 80’s, in those days technology was advancing so rapidly there were complete re-designs from many companies every year. The same is true for head units… the $900 bucks that a Pioneer CD player cost in 1985 will now buy you their premium quality, in-dash, builtin amp, motorized 7-inch TFT touch screen, AM/ FM DVD/CD/MP3 player with 6 preamp outputs! And for good measure, it also includes a tuner, iPod connectivity, and probably GPS navigation and Bluetooth! I mean come on folks, let’s get real here! How many of you would trade that even-up for an old school 1985 Pioneer CD player that didn’t even have a tuner? See what I mean? Don’t misunderstand me here, I also frequently wax nostalgic about some of the premier car audio products of days gone by. I’ll always have fond memories of my first system with subwoofers, in my 1971 Monaco. Back in 1978 or ’79, I robbed the 10-inch bass drivers from a pair of Altec home speakers, mounted them in the huge trunk in an infinite baffle configuration, cobbled together a passive crossover, and connected the

whole shebang to my first amplifier, which was an Audiomobile. The source? That Craig 8-track player, and my full range speakers were 2 pairs of Craig 6’s with whizzer cones, and a pair of Radio Shack tweeters. I had the loudest, best sounding system for miles around. This was the first time most of us had heard bass below 80Hz in a car! It may have been one of the first cars in Canada with subwoofers. But as cool as it was, it certainly wasn’t as good as even that basic system I just did in the young tuners WRX. My friends know I even have a small collection of classic audio stuff, some of which has never been removed from its original packaging. I have that Audiomobile amplifier from the mid 70’s, and brand new Alpine 7909, still in the box. I also have a brand new Rockford Fosgate Power 300 from 1989. I like to collect pieces like this because they are historically significant, pretty cool, and it brings back a lot of fond memories. But I’ll guarantee you, I’d never choose a single piece of it to replace any component in the modern system in my vehicle, and unless those old pieces of gear hold special significance to you, you shouldn’t either! Modern equipment is superior in almost every possible way, and don’t let anyone tell you different. Maybe someone should start a car audio museum?!

JVC KS-AR9501D Text and Measurements by Garry Springgay

“Rated 500 wattsatinto 4 ohms, and 1,000 and watts into 12,500 and 1 ohm load s respectively , it ’s fairly evid that JVC isent serious a building sboomuet real power!” f you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed that the folks over at JVC have stepped up their high performance car audio program significantly in the last couple of years. The JVC Arsenal series of products are designed to go head to head with the traditional leading brands in each category, and from what I have seen, are doing a good job at holding their own when compared to the usual suspects. If you were under the impression that a JVC subwoofer amp was about as competitive as the 88 car in Sprint Cup, you’re more out of touch than Dale Jr.’s cousin Tony!

I

Let’s take a closer look at a new Arsenal series amplifier, the big bad KS-AR9501D. Rated at 500 watts into 4 ohms, and 1,000 and 1,500 watts into 2 and 1 ohm loads respectively, it’s fairly evident that JVC is serious about building some real power! The amp isn’t what you’d call small, nor is it a lightweight. And when you’re building $649.95 (USD) car audio amplifiers that can have their output measured in horsepower, that’s a good thing (1HP = 745.7 Watts). Features The KS-AR9501D measures about 14.2” x 9.7” x 2.4”, and weighs over 11 pounds. Much of that weight comes from a large and thick cast aluminum heat sink that’s required to dissipate the amount of heat generated and keep the Arsenal amp running cool and reliably. From a cosmetic perspective the big JVC flagship is a little on the plain side, but some have commented that it just looks serious. At any rate, the amp uses a simple and smooth design, finished in a powdercoating that’s a medium-dark shade of charcoal. In the center of the top surface of the heatsink is a large square badge of brushed aluminum retained with 4 hex-head chrome screws. Of course I took the 24

screws out to see if anything was hiding under there, and while there’s nothing under it, I soon realized they made it removable and square so it could be rotated in 90 degree increments to always be facing “the right direction” regardless of how the amp was mounted. Thoughtful stuff like this from JVC… nice! And there’s more. The Arsenal amp is laid out in a way that puts all the wiring, power, speaker and signal, all on one side of the chassis, and all of the controls on the opposite side. This is really handy when doing the install, because having all the wiring on one side makes things easier to hide and trim out. The controls themselves are also a departure from the normal. Instead of the usual tiny little pots that require a small screwdriver to adjust the pot you’re looking for, the Arsenal amplifier celebrates its control functions. All of the control settings, gain, crossover, subsonic filter, bass EQ, and phase are recessed behind an L-shaped smoked polycarbonate cover. You remove the cover with two hex head machine screws, and behind it, instead of tiny little pots and switches; you get actual real control knobs, big enough to turn easily with your fingers. The controls themselves are nicely weighted and have a quality feel to them, and

Not only has JVC decided to build big amps, they recognize that even a really big amp isn’t always enough, so they have made the KS-AR9501D strappable to a second one...“

end sonic performance. None of them will ever be sonically confused with a good Class AB design, but then again, the Class AB designs would need about double the amount of current than these good Class D amps require. So either way, there’s a compromise… sometimes I wish I’d never taken physics! Design Of course after my listening session was over, the first thing I did was take the thing apart. I soon realized why I had no current delivery issues in my listening. The KS-AR9501D uses 6 large TO-247 size Power HEXFET’s, each capable of handling over 90 amps of current. The PCB itself is a double sided affair, and appears to use heavy gauge copper traces. There are five 2200μF caps in the power supply, and the secondary capacitance is handled by a pair of large can 4700μF capacitors. Output devices consist of six IRF9640 TO-220 MOSFETS. The layout and design of the amp was fine, and it uses a mixture of surface mount and thru-hole resistors. I did note that the pots used would net a -18dB crossover, which confirmed my earlier suspicions. The critical output filters seemed to be heavy duty, and all the high mass parts were secured to the PCB with adhesives and mechanical methods. On the Bench Once I had completed my inspection, it was time to get the numbers out of it, so I connected it to the ruthlessly accurate Cogent test bench. The amplifier measured pretty much as advertised, and that is to say, very well! Power developed exceeded the published ratings at both 4 and 2 ohms, and only fell about 1/10th of 1dB short of the 1 ohm rating. Signal to noise was also good for a Class D design, as was distortion. The crossover and subsonic filters as well as the bass EQ worked exactly as intended, and the phase switch provided precisely 180° of shift at 100Hz. The big JVC is designed to be able to be driven to full power with input signal levels between about 300mV and 6 volts. This is a useful range, and is compatible with any source unit or preamp capable of 2 volts of output or more. 28

CONTROLS & FEATURES The new Kenwood KDC-HD942U ($299.00 USD) is a single DIN chassis CD/MP3 Receiver that provides connectivity for your iPod, and includes a built-in HD Radio tuner. With the optional KCA-BT200 Bluetooth adapter, the unit will also allow you to make and receive hands free calls from your radio. With the HD Radio tuner you can enjoy almost CD quality sound from your tuner, and the best part is there are no subscription fees! AM radio sounds better as well, and because HD Radio offers multicasting, (which means there are multiple channels on each frequency) you have even more listening choices. If you have not yet experienced HD Radio, you should. Not only is the sound quality very good, but there are other benefits as well. For example, when your iPod is connected to the Kenwood KDC-HD942U you can “tag” songs heard on the HD broadcasts. Then, when you sync your iPod to your computer, iTunes automatically looks up all the songs you tagged, so you can decide if you want to buy them. This is a very handy feature if you are bad at remembering song titles or the names of new artists. While beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, the Kenwood KDC-HD942U is a good looking unit, with a very easy to read high resolution dot matrix display, between two traditional looking round knobs. The clean and uncluttered faceplate reminds me of an old school twin-shaft style radio, which is maybe why I liked the way it looked. Most of the 30

controls and functions are accessed via one of these round knobs. The left knob is a 3-way control which accesses and controls the audio related functions and adjustments. The 7-way right hand “wobble knob” provides control over other menu driven items like system setup, track changing and searching. I liked the available choices for the display set. You can select between a 4 or 5 line display, change the LCD from positive to negative, or simply just display a big clock if you prefer. The look of the display is simple to customize and easy to read once your selections are made. There are 10 different illumination colors, which are also very user-friendly, you can even have different areas of the faceplate be different colors, or have the brightness change with the music! The ergonomics are thoughtfully laid out, but there are so many adjustment capabilities in so many different menus and levels, you’ll absolutely need the owner’s manual the first time or two. Thankfully, Kenwood has seen fit to include a printed manual with the unit, and not stick everything on a CD and make you print it yourself. The faceplate is a fold down detachable design, and operates smoothly and easily, which is good, because it needs to be folded down to insert or eject a CD. Behind the faceplate is a flashing red LED that can be turned on to warn away potential thieves, or, if you prefer not to have the LED flashing, the function is defeatable. Additional security comes in

the form of a 4-digit security code which is needed to re-activate the product once constant power has been removed from the unit. Eighteen FM station presets are available as well as six more for AM stations, but there are no preset buttons on the faceplate. You can either select them using the right hand knob, or you can access them directly via the nicely designed IR remote controh which is included. A powerful DSP processor (which can be bypassed for the purists out there) provides a plethora of control and adjustment functions. A look through the various menus allows easy setup of basic crossover points, preset equalization curves, listener position control, and other functions. There is also a “Highway Sound” setting that can compensate for sound lost in typical road noise, and you can select from 3 different levels of compensation. As is common on most modern radios, there is also a control to compensate for differences in various sources volumes. If you’re like me and prefer to make your own adjustments, you can select from 9 crossover frequencies for the front and rear channels, and 13 frequencies for the subwoofer outputs, at -12dB/oct. The equalizer section provides adjustment of up to 13 bands, with selectable “Q”, as well as amplitude adjustment of -9 to +9dB for each frequency. If you still want to tweak your sound even more, there is also digitally controlled “time alignment”

The Kenwood’s sonics were top notch, and I found absolutely nothing to gripe about. iPod control of track search and selection was reasonably fast using the rotary knob, and you can also search quickly by letter. For those of you with passengers who want to play DJ, the KDC-HD942U can also allow the iPod to be used as the controller.” ON THE BENCH With my listening completed, I moved into the lab and went through the usual battery of tests and measurements. What I found basically supported my earlier impressions, the Kenwood unit is a good performing product, in pretty much all aspects. I measured 3.9 volts of actual usable output, and the frequency response measured nice and flat as well. Interestingly, the response curve was slightly flatter when the DSP was bypassed, but the differences were minor and would be almost impossible to hear. Signal to noise of the preouts was a quiet -87.6dBA at full output. The only spec that could have been a bit better was the output impedance, which measured average at 250 ohms. But all in all, the Kenwood is a very good performer, and would be an excellent choice for any high end system.

CONCLUSION

I really like the Kenwood KDC-HD942U. Once I got used to finding things in the menus, and especially after the initial setup and adjustments are completed, the unit is quite intuitive and easy to use, particularly when it comes to the most commonly accessed functions. At around 300 bucks, I thought it could have included the Bluetooth adapter, but after considering how much DSP tuning power is built in, I can understand the trade off involved. The good news is that you can have it all, and when you do, you’ll have a thoroughly modern high performance unit with all the technology you’d expect in the 21st century.

The overall output was impressive, and you do not need a huge amp to get serious output from this woofer”

n the eastern edge of the great Los Angeles basin lies the quiet suburb of Chino, California. Traditionally, Chino has been an area rich in agriculture. Providing a great deal of the dairy products for Southern Californian supermarkets, you would expect a quiet, pastoral place, where cows graze and housewives hang out clean laundry to dry. Well, not if the folks from PowerBass have anything to do with it! With the slogan “Pounding Heads Since 2001”, the guys at PowerBass are doing their best to wake up their community and the rest of the country, with their selection of amplifiers, loudspeakers and subwoofers. This time we’re going to take a look at one of their “middle child” series of woofers, the 12” dual voice coil M-124D, which sells here in the U.S. for around 150 bucks. The M series of woofers underwent a drastic series of changes and improvements for 2009, and according to Jay Kent at PowerBass, it’s one of the best sounding woofers they’ve ever built.

O

36

Features The PowerBass M series of woofers use largeroll Santoprene surrounds, non-pressed paper cones, and stamped steel baskets. Taking a close look at the M-124D, I found the woofer to be well made, and nicely finished. The basket is coated in a high gloss black powdercoat, with small chromeplated vents placed radially around the basket and under the spider to assist in voice coil cooling. Even the edge of the magnet is painted black, for a nice cosmetic touch. At the bottom of the woofer is a vented and domed backplate, which is also coated in a black finish to aid in cooling. The assembly is extended to allow high amounts of excursion without bottoming. The magnetic motor structure of the woofer is a traditional ceramic ferrite material, measuring 1” tall and almost 6” in diameter. The magnet itself weighs in at a hefty 61oz. Moving upward, the motors magnetic energy is focused on dual, 4 ohm, 1.5-inch long, four layer voice coils, which are wound on a 2-inch diameter

aluminum former. Aluminum is used to aid in heat dissipation, and reduce voice coil temperatures, which translates into increased power handling and reliability. Connecting the former assembly to the basket on the lower end is a black poly-cotton progressive compliance flat spider, the outer edge of which attaches directly to the basket landing. Tinsel leads for both voice coils are woven into the spider to eliminate the chance of lead slap or damage from over excursion. Speaker wires are connected via 2 pairs of chrome plated spring terminals which will accept 10 gauge wire. Unlike some other woofers, these terminals are very solid, and don’t bend when you depress them. The cone material is a more traditional paper material, which some dismiss as “old school” but if you listen to as many woofers as I do, you may notice that many paper cone woofers simply have a rounder, fatter sound than their modern

polypropylene brethren. I actually sometimes prefer the sonics of a paper cone, and since I first saw this woofer, I have been looking forward to hearing it. A fairly conventional injection molded poly dustcap with the PowerBass logo tops the cone, and a rubber gasket promotes sealing and hides all but four of the woofers eight mounting screws. The M series woofers come with a 1 year warranty. Listening After the usual exercise period, I wired the dual 4 ohm coils in parallel, and for a change I decided

to use a 1.5 cubic foot vented enclosure tuned to about 30Hz, which was one of the enclosures Jay at PowerBass had strongly recommended. The manual mentioned a preference for sealed enclosures, but Jay’s a hands-on sort of guy, and I’ll take advice like that any time. With the signal to the woofer crossed over at 100Hz, at a rate of -24dB per octave, and a subsonic filter set at 25Hz, I loaded up the CD player with a few high energy bass tracks, and a few other favorites. Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya, and Lil’ Kim’s version of LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” sounded hot, with deep driving rhythms that would have made engineer Dave Pensado proud. A little 50 Cent, and a bump on the volume knob, and it sounded like we could have indeed been “In Da Club”. The output was strong and authoritative, and deep bass like the synth notes in Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8ter Boi” were reproduced well, and even though these notes were a bit below the enclosures tuned frequency, and excursion was definitely up there, the M-124D handled it easily without complaint. As I had hoped, the PowerBass woofer rewarded my proclivity for paper cones with deep full and rich sounding bass, and even in the vented enclosure articulation was quite good, and the sound never got muddy or boomy. Dolby’s “Key to Her Ferrari” and Thom Rotella’s “Friends”, the M-124D provided all the bottom end I wanted and retained a tight and articulate sound. During my listening, I probably exceeded the woofers 325 watt power rating more than a few times, but the PowerBass woofer handled everything I threw at it without complaint or signs of reaching its mechanical limits. The overall output was impressive, and you do not need a huge amp to get serious output from this woofer. On The Bench The next morning I removed the woofer from the enclosure and took it to

the bench to measure the Thiele-Small parameters. With the coils in parallel, I’m happy to report that my data matched the published data easily within the normal tolerances seen in loudspeakers. This means that for those of you who prefer to use a computer program to estimate enclosure design performance, the data you get from the manual should yield the expected results, which all too often is not the case. After the woofer had had a few hours of use, I measured it’s resonant frequency to be 25Hz, and the rest of the parameters show that the woofer will work quite well in either a sealed or vented application, but my listening session has me sold on the vented application.

any years ago, I lived in the Canadian Prairie region. It wasn’t uncommon to have cold winter temperatures reach -40 degrees, and I grew up learning about block heaters, battery blankets, and all the other devices folks living in arctic temperatures have to use to keep their vehicles running through the winter. Batteries were tended to regularly, and replaced at the first sign of weakness. These days I’ve traded the -40° below winters for months of intense heat in the Sonoran desert of Arizona at our product testing facility. And you may be surprised to learn I actually have to replace my vehicles batteries / power cells even more often since moving here. The intense heat of an Arizona summer kills batteries even quicker than the Canadian winter did, so what you choose to power your car and its audio system with is critical. Recently, I had noticed voltage drops that were more severe than normal, and significant headlight dimming when strong bass notes hit. These were all sure signs that the death of my truck battery was imminent, and I knew I’d better start looking for a top quality replacement power cell very soon. As luck would have it, the folks at Kinetik have come up with a new high quality power cell perfect for my application, the Kinetik HC1200. The HC1200 fits right between the HC800 and HC1400 power cells in terms of both power and size. Where the HC1400 measures 9 x 5.3 x 8.1 inches high, making it too large to fit in some popular sport compact applications, the new HC1200 power cell measures a relatively diminutive 7.75 x 6.5 x 6.875 inches high. The Kinetik HC1200 power cells are AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) high power-density batteries. They are “sealed” and can be mounted in any position, although upside down is not recommended. These permanently sealed batteries are completely maintenance free, and use a recombination reaction to prevent the escape of hydrogen and oxygen gases which are normally lost to the atmosphere in a regular lead acid battery.

M

42

These power cells also maintain a higher voltage when loaded, and because of the construction, are far more superior to a regular battery in terms of heat and vibration resistance. Specifically designed for car audio applications, the HC1200 power cells have very low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) which allows them to provide almost instantaneous current to the amplifier. These power cells also maintain a higher voltage when loaded, and because of the construction, are far more superior to a regular battery in terms of heat and vibration resistance. Each HC1200 battery weighs about 28 pounds. After I replaced the old lead acid battery with the new Kinetik HC1200 power cell, the results were immediately apparent. The truck cranked much more quickly, and the voltage stayed higher at idle when using a lot of high current equipment like lights, AC and the audio system.

The headlight dimming was all but gone, and I occasionally seemed to sense the bass was a bit tighter as well. All in all, the Kinetik HC1200 was the perfect replacement for my vehicle, and the next time you need a battery, do yourself a favor and check out the offerings from Kinetik. I’m really glad I did! o you’ve finally got your car dialed in exactly how you want it. The motor’s built, brakes are upgraded, suspension’s tight, stereo’s bumpin’… It took some time, lots of cash, and good old blood, sweat, and tears, but it’s done! Now all you have to do is keep it safely in your hands. Nice rides with loud stereos are prime targets for low-life thieves that make a living by stealing. To protect your ride from theft, you need a security system that’s more than just a loud siren. You need something that’ll alert you to what’s happening, and take steps to keep what is rightfully yours where it belongs. That’s where the new Autopage C3-RS730 comes in. First, the C3-RS730 is more than a simple alarm. It’s a fully featured 4 channel system with 5 on-board relays that has been reduced in overall size by almost 50%, allowing it to fit in the tighter spaces under the dashboards of any modern car or sport compact. The reduction in the size of the main unit was achieved by utilizing newly developed 30/40 ampere micro relays. Additionally the remote start functionality has been upgraded with new programmable outputs and new starter and timing sequencing for improved compatibility with new GM vehicles. Featuring a new chrome metal finish two-way paging transmitter that broadcasts on AM radio frequencies, the newest system from Autopage can keep you informed on the status of your ride from up to a half mile away! And to make it easier to use, the LCD screen on the transmitter has been increased 50% in size. Want more? Well, if that isn’t good enough, the C3-RS730 is fully compatible with Autopage’s new C3 technology. The latest and most advanced vehicle security and remote start solution, C3 is a cell phone-based vehicle communication system. The optional C3 telematics module integrates cellular and GPS tracking to provide the user with a cell phone remote commander for security, remote start and GPS tracking from anywhere in the world regardless

The C3-RS730 comes with a dual stage shock and impact sensor, dedicated siren and horn outputs, parking light flash, dome light supervision, active and passive anti-carjacking, and an additional auxiliary output. So not only can you keep tabs on your ride from anywhere at anytime, but the Autopage piece isn’t all work and no play. There are a bunch of cool and convenient features as well, such as a 5 button transmitter with a larger LCD screen and choice of screen colors, remote starting capability, keyless entry, 2 car operation from one remote, remote trunk opening and more. You can even monitor the interior temperature of the car via the two-way transmitters’ LCD screen. If you love your ride, and want to do everything possible to keep it yours, check out the new C3 system as well as the C3-RS730 at your local Autopage dealer. Remember, you don’t have to make your car impossible to steal, you only have to make it harder to take than someone else’s! For more features and information visit www.autopageusa.com

ome say the Acura NSX was the supercar that never was. Honda had a strong racing heritage, the styling was on par with any exotic of its day, yet for many of us the wheezing 270hp motor lacked exhilaration. For that reason, the Acura NSX never stole the limelight away from the European exotics. It is a superior chassis in every respect right down to the last detail like the elaborate trussed aluminum a-arms, but it lacked the muscle to give it serious street-cred. Even though a more potent 3.2L came into play, the aftermarket was more interested in the tweak-friendly C30A 3.0L that was built around OBD-I.

S

NSX11.08 v4.indd 3

The majority of NSX owners have gravitated toward the pristine OEM feel for their cars, with the only aftermarket upgrades being limited to intakes, exhausts and wheels. For tuners (with some money) NSXs were within reach and they cracked open their HyperRevs to see what could be upgraded. Such was the case with Ravi Ayyagari of Seattle, WA who not only made the NSX his passion but now develops products and even spawned an NSX-specific business – Umbrella Auto Design. Although we weren’t sure where the “Umbrella” moniker came from, we’re betting it has something to do with the often soggy Pacific Northwest weather in his hometown

of Seattle, WA. As you can see, Ayyagari’s NSX is a scorching ball of heat against any gloomy backdrop. Umbrella Auto Design may have started out as an NSX-based specialty shop, but has since expanded to include custom tuning, parts and service for a number of high-end luxury vehicles, sports cars and exotics. Ayyagari threw all of the resources he had at this NSX project performing the majority of the work in-house at his 6,000 sq. ft. shop. The results were impressive and nailing a PASMAG cover only backs that up. With only 19,000 original miles, most NSX owners would have invested time keeping this car in mint condition but the mission here was very different. The project began with purchasing a second previously crahsed NSX race car to extract the motor. The block was machined and the assembly fully balanced and blueprinted by CompTech Machine. The OE titanium connecting rods were pinned to JE pistons and a knife-edge crankshaft. The heads were ported and filled with titanium retainers and heavy duty springs. An RFY 304 stainless steel equal length header was fitted along with a GT-V1 exhaust and ARC test pipe. The matching race transmission features fortified synchos and forks. The gearing features the closeratio gears found in the Honda NSX-R. The Exedy twin-plate carbon clutch spins up a CompTech 4.55 rear differential. The driveline has to deal with almost 350whp in its current form without forced induction. As for fancy footwork, this particular NSX has plenty. Already blessed with the trickle-down effect of decades of Formula One racing knowledge, Ayyagari decided to opt for some upgrades and even manufacture what he couldn’t find. A set of JIC FLTTAR coilovers were added to provide various levels of dampening adjustment, as with all coilovers a range of ride-height adjustment is possible by cranking the collars around the threaded 50

body. For Ayyagari, he decided to engineer something special to totally eliminate the need to slip out of your Pradas to adjust ride-height with a conventional jack and elbow grease. Many said it couldn’t be done but this kit fits many aftermarket coilover applications. He has patented the Umbrella Auto Design VRH Lifter Set, a mechanical device that sits above the coilover spring and below the pillow mount. At the flick of a button, the fully bottom’ed coilover can raise to its maximum height or anywhere in between! As for the rollers, Ayyagari decided to go with somewhat of a classic look. He sourced out a set of Advan RS staggered wheels in 18x9-inch front and massive 19x10-inch rears. The wheels are tightly wrapped in Falken FK452s sized in 225/35R18 and 275/30R19s on the drive wheels to amount to more than enough grip for this lightweight. Lurking behind the gold spokes are StopTech binders using ST-40 calipers, 13-inch rotors and stainless steel braided lines on all four corners. On the interior, there isn’t much NSX left. Everything down to the horn button (from the Honda NSX-R) has been replaced, recovered or reinvented. The interior has been custom covered in Alcantara by Umbrella Auto Design and cost over $12,000. All of the remaining plastic panels were refinished in BMW M3 silver base and clear. A pair of Alpine multimedia screens are flush mounted into the custom dash. An Alpine IVA W205 double DIN DVD player runs the show and an Alpine TME M740BT 10-inch LCD monitor is housed in JDM Honda navigation pod at top of dash. All of the high end audio system comes courtesy of a full Memphis Car Audio install including an MClass 4-channel 75w x 4 amplifier, 6.5-inch Sync component set with 1-inch

Memphis Car Audio power wire and signal cables were used for the stealthy install featuring a custom composite subwoofer enclosure (installed in passenger foot well), fabricated door speaker enclosures, and a steel amp rack fabricated by Umbrella Auto Design which attaches at factory mounting points already existing in the NSX so that no cutting or drilling of car was required. Finishing touches include blue interior LED accent lighting by Varad and trim upholstering the custom amp rack in Alcantara. Many sleepless nights were invested by Ayyagari, as he did the audio install himself and the flawless results speak volumes.

Finally, we get to the bodywork that makes this car unique. This wouldn’t be the first Sorcery kit we found on an NSX, but most definitely the rarest by far. Rare as in the only SuperGT-style in existence! This NSX aerokit consists of a carbon fiber front splitter, front bumper, sideskirts, rear spoiler and rear diffuser. An NSX-R vented hood was added along with factory headlights and rear tail light assembly off a 2005 NSX. After the body was fitted to perfection, it was slathered in several coasts of freshly squeezed BASF Candy Mandarin Orange paint by BEL RED Auto Rebuild and covered in 3M paint protection by Accutint. Ayyagari owes special thanks to Adam Nonis and Dave Ames on this build totalling 13 months and nearly 3,000 man-hours.

The ported enclosure provides multitudes of tight, slamming bass from the polypropylene woofers rated at 1,000W of peak power. Six woofers are mounted along the vertical wall facing the front seat backs, then six additional woofers lurk behind it to pound sound waves out the port. The lows are driven out of six mono block Clarion DPX1151 amps that churn out 1,550W at 10hm, three of which are mounted visibly upon opening the rear hatch. The mids and highs are produced by a total of eight component speakers. In the mid range are a pair of Clarion SRU1720M’s which can handle 350W. These 6.75-inch speakers are found in the rear doors bombarding the occupants with a robust mid-range sound and striking highs. Mounted inside color matched fiberglass door inserts, these mids are powered with a single Clarion APX4361 680W 4-channel amp. Four additional Clarion 5.25inch components are powered by a pair of Clarion APX4361 680W 4-channel amps to reproduce the

crisp, bright highs. These speakers and their related 1-inch dome tweeters are all wired up with crossovers found underneath the driver’s seat. The entire system is connected with Scosche wiring, fuses and distribution blocks all lit up with four powerful Kinetik HC1400 batteries. The source unit is a Clarion CZ509 Bluetooth headunit sunk into the factory single DIN location. Responsible for the sound reproduction, the sources of this unit include: CD-DA, CD-R, CD-RW, iPod and satellite radio. Although the unit does feature a 50Wx4 onboard amp, it isn’t needed considering there is well over 10,000 watts of amplification onboard! In terms of performance modifications, the investment has been minimal but noticeable. A Skunk2 stainless steel exhaust was added to improved sound and some extra ponies. The suspension was replaced with a more capable TEIN FLEX coilover with 9K springs all around to prevent any sagging. The wheels are 17x8-inch Enkei RPF1’s wrapped in sticky high performance Toyo T1R 235/40R17 all around.

Our very own Editor-in-Chief, Mark Pereira felt the wrath of this Clarion system first-hand at CES 2009 in Las Vegas. After a severe beating inside the car at full volume, (at the suggestion of Clarion’s resident prankster Kevin Kuenzie) he was seen wobbling around after stepping out with a big grin. “Every bass note feels like a Rick Flair wrestling slap to the chest,” Pereira laughs. For the crew at Clarion, that’s exactly the kind of testimonial they set out to achieve and the natural high their products are more than capable of marketing.

Not to mention it really stands out from the other tuner cars on the road around here and I get a kick out of people saying, That’s a Neon?!” Well, we certainly can’t argue with that and his head turning Neon is sure to get some stares. Starting with performance, Prouty kept it simple with a few modest upgrades in the form of an AEM cold air intake, Borla exhaust, NGK Platinum spark plugs, Magnastar ignition wires and an upgraded Mopar clutch and flywheel set up. Outside, the full Razzi body kit provides a more aggressive style, along with the custom two-tone paint scheme and a detailed stripe airbrushed to perfection with hundreds of skulls throughout it. The upgraded wheels are 18-inch Kyowa Racing ZR 206 in hyper black wrapped with matching 18-inch Fuzion ZRi tires. Stopping power comes courtesy of slotted EBC performance rotors and pads. To get the

perfect stance, Prouty turned to Megan Racing for a set of fully adjustable coilovers and a DC Sports strut bar to dial in a stiffer ride. The real story starts inside, where Prouty laid out a plan of attack for the custom interior and an audio system he and his students would drool over for years to come. The entire top portion of the dashboard was custom fiberglassed and color matched to the exterior with a pair of JBL GTi 608 Power Series 6.5-inch components molded in. The race seats, pillars and interior panels are wrapped smoothly in suede for a sporty feel. A Monkey Video MDVDTS 6.5 DVD / CD head unit runs the show up front, feeding several additional Helios monitors throughout Prouty’s multimedia install. When it came to amp selection, a powerful JBL Crown series 1100.1 amp juices the earth shaking JBL P1224 Power Series woofers and a JBL Power Series 300.4 runs a pair of JBL GTO 804 midbass speakers. Rear fill is assigned to a set of JBL 6.5inch Power Series co-axials. In order to ensure things run smoothly and perform at the highest of levels trusted Tsunami wiring, interconnections and distribution were used for the entire installation. An Autocraft battery and two additional Shuriken batteries make sure power is never an issue. The fiberglass trunk is a true work of art centered around the JBL Crown amplifer, with a full gaming system, large Helios monitor and loud and clear JBL components.

CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Text by Mark Pereira // Photos by IASCA Canada

he dedicated team at IASCA has been hard at work, hosting a number of successful international events this year. These two back to back IASCA-sanctioned audio competitions marked the first time a true IASCA Canadian Champion would be crown. The first big event took place on the West Coast in Penticton, BC and the second event on the following weekend out East in Whitby, ON. Their first class evaluation and judging system continues to ensure fair play, as the official Audio Control meter was used at both shows for IDBL and the same two IASCA judges were flown across the country to evaluate the same classes at both events. Doing this means Jason Gay and fellow IASCA organizers could guarantee fair and consistent judging to all competitors, allowing them to declare a first-time ever Canadian Champion in each class. “The Penticton show was amazing, and the competition was fierce. The weather was perfect and the scenery was breathtaking. It was a true paradise location for an audio show competition… Andres Car Audio was the gracious host and did a simply amazing job,” according to IASCA Canada. The Eastern showdown in Whitby was organized by Jason Gay and K&A Promotions, as the threatening cloud cover and rain held off for another amazing IASCA weekend. Even Director of IASCA Worldwide Operations, Moe Sabourin honored fans by attending both events, serving as a special guest judge. Special thanks go to the devoted competitors, dedicated staff and judging team who did an awesome job and made it all possible, especially Tim and Bry (IDBL), Damian and Travis (SQ), Moe, Brian and Al (SQ install) and Tammy (Registration). According to this event, the Canadian car audio community is clearly alive and well, as these competitors came far and wide to strut their stuff. Congratulations to the entire IASCA team and all the crazy Canadian audiophiles out there. For more visit www.pasmag.com and www.iasca.com

ybrid Audio Technologies-equipped cars dominated the trophy ceremonies at the recent IASCA Canadian Championships with key wins, including the highest sound quality score in both Eastern and Western Canada, respectively, the highest overall sound and installation “SQi” score, as well as a remarkable sweep of all “SQi” classes in Eastern Canada. The Western Championships was an impressive showing for Team Hybrids members, dealers, and customers. Hybrid Audio product user Gene Skarra won the Amateur SQC “sound only” division, and in the Professional division, Team Hybrids North American Coordinator Bill Pleasant won the Professional SQC “sound only” title with the highest sound quality score of the Western championships. Bill also won the Professional SQi class, where scores are awarded for both sound and installation, posting an impressive 460 points - the highest score of the entire Canadian Finals Series, East or West! Keith McCumber of Sounds Good in Coquitlam, BC, a Hybrid Audio Technologies dealer, took third place in the Professional division and in the Amateur SQi division, and Team Hybrids member Mike Peterson nabbed 3rd place in SQi and Amateur SQC with his daily driven Mustang.

H

At the Eastern Championships, nine of ten SQ and SQI classes were won by a Hybrid Audio Technologies user or Team Hybrids member. The Hybrid Audio Technologies champions are as follows: Julian Ridi (Rookie), David Erwin (Amateur), John Myers (Professional), Emanuel Beja (Ultimate), Larry Woolacott (Expert), Julian Ridi (SQC Rookie), John Myers (SQC Professional), Emanuel Beja (SQC Ultimate), Larry Woolacott (SQC Expert). For his efforts in SQC Amateur, David Erwin was awarded second place, 0.5 points behind the winner, due only to system noise deductions which were out of Erwin’s control. “The showing from our Canadian Team and other folks using the Hybrid Audio Technologies product was remarkable and I am elated that we have continued on in the tradition of dominating organized competition, the proving ground for great car audio equipment,” remarked Scott Buwalda, CEO of Hybrid Audio Technologies. “It’s a great feeling to back up our wins from the North American Championships, and our Sound Quality Best of Show win at the Mexican IASCA Finals last October. The best sounding cars in North America – Mexico, USA, and now Canada – all use Hybrid Audio Technologies products.”

and The Big Oki

ver the years we’ve had the opportunity to travel across North America and Europe for various car audio events and competitions. It’s amazing to see enthusiasts worldwide still share a common interest and passion for car audio competition. The little town of Limeshain Hainchen, Germany (population of 1,340) may seem small and unassuming, however each July it just explodes, as it plays host to the Mammut Üüüühh! The event is the brainchild of good friend Michael Müller or as people like to refer to him; “The Big Oki.” Oki, a car audio veteran of almost two decades has been organizing this event since 2003. This is something Oki does for his friends and fellow competitors which grows in attendance every year. It’s safe to say this is one of the largest events in car audio we’ve attended. With 460 trophies, five sanctioning organizations, 504 registered competitors and all of this in a single day event! This year’s presenting sponsor was ACR.eu who has been a supporter of the Mammut Üüüühh! for many years. Along with ACR.eu it was an all-star list of competition vehicles, booths, banners and supporters including Audio Design/Hifonics, SPL Dynamics/Dietz, AIV/Rainbow, Digital Designs, Cactus Sounds, Magnat, JBL/Harman Germany, Zapco Exclusive and Team GCL. Cactus Sounds were full effect with at least a dozen vehicles. Spearheaded by Cactus himself and his newly released Super Street 1-2 SEAT

Terra that set a new world record with a score of 166.3db. Be on the lookout for this behemoth come world finals as he has plenty more in store. Extreme class veteran Superstany and his OPEL wagon traveled from Belgium. He easily won loudest of the day with a monstrous 174.3db. Speaking of distance it was a narrow race between Henning Poulsen who traveled 960km (596 miles) and Jan Falk with 850km (528 miles) each way, now that’s dedication. Competitors came from as far away as the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Italy, France, Denmark and Switzerland for a truly international event. A personal highlight had to be our first-hand demo of Oki’s VW Touran (renamed Turann). Oki is known the world over for his impressive builds, but this tops them all. This build has earned him numerous championships and records, but for Oki it’s all about pleasing spectators. His VW crossover is loaded to the hilt with a ton of the finest gear. Oki worked with ACR.eu to put together one of the most fully functional demo vehicles that not only wins in the lanes but simply blows people away. The vehicle houses an octet of Emphaser NEO COMP 15s powered by a total of four Zapco 4KWs. He also has a fifth one running his front stage handled by Radical Audio and Adrian Audio. We had a chance to use the ZENEC all-in-one multimedia head-unit from ACR.eu during the demo and this bad boy sure rocks. We’ve had our share of demos in many of the loudest vehicles on the planet and this was right up there musically speaking.

nd repping Team Golden Sou IMUS’ their Hifonics MAXX

With an event this size, an officiating staff of mega proportions was required and handled by Germany’s own Detlef Hagel, Gerri Douven, Ralf Keppelen, Michael Bösche and Peter Gerdes. They made sure everything ran smoothly in and out of the lanes. Not an easy task considering the sheer amount of competitors and various competition formats. Speaking of competition formats, as mentioned earlier there was a total of 5 organizations. There was dB Drag, Bass Race, dB Cup, SPL Classics, AYA Sound Quality and between them a total of 504 competition participants. The event also saw well above the small town’s posted population in spectators alone, with roughly 2,000 fans in attendance. Enthusiasts were treated to top notch cuisine too, with Oki’s mother Renate Müller running a smooth operation in the kitchen and former US Military vet Johhny from Johhny’s BBQ grilling for the masses. This is by far one of the largest single day events we’ve ever attended. Besides the sheer number of participants and spectators, what really set this event apart is the support and dedication of the officiating staff and the competitors who persevered through over 17 straight hours of competition that day. Yes you read correct; the day started at 8am and ran till nearly 1:30am when the last of the 1 ½ ton in trophies were given out. If you’re ever in Europe or consider yourself a dedicated competitor, this is the place to be. Do whatever you need to do; just don’t miss your opportunity to attend the Mammut Üüüühh in 2010. he highly successful MECA Crankinshine 2009 Series invaded Fayetteville, TN on a few occasions this year and delivered non-stop fun and entertainment despite super hot and humid weather. Cartunes Customs of Hazel Green, AL was the Retail Sponsor for the 1st and 3rd event, with Wall Street’s Finest, MECA 1st Independent Team, sponsoring the 2nd event. 2008 MECA SPL AS 3 World Champion D R Kirkland was instrumental in putting these events together, and Kirkland’s Pest Control was a major sponsor. Kirkland said, “It was cool to have events only 10 miles from my house, instead driving a few hours or more to other TN and AL MECA events.” Chris Gregory of WSF was the Show and Shine Judge and worked with Commissioner Steve Stern to oversee the events and award the hottest vehicles in attendance. onsidered one of the most talented driver’s in Formula D, pro drifter Samuel Hubinette and his mighty Dodge Viper were a perfect match during their commanding time together, with many top podium finishes to prove it. When it came time to retire the Viper and move onto a new drift machine, major sponsor Mopar developed a powerful Dodge Charger SRT-8 for him and more recently this all new Dodge Challenger! Although there never was anything wrong with his initial weapon of choice, the trusty Viper often still popped up at Formula D events when crowds were expecting something new and even this year, the unbreakable Viper appeared in the first round of competition at Long Beach.

POWERHOUSE

However, this time around Hubinette and his team got it right. The new Challenger is fierce and it has all of the right equipment and several innovations never seen before in the drifting world. The crew over at NuFormz Racing helped develop the car under the direction of former drag racer, Shaun Carlson. Carlson has been in competitive motorsports for many years and has dropped the gloves against the world of drifting by teaming up with his former drag sponsor Mopar and Hubinette. The car was unveiled at SEMA last November to the delight of fans who had been hearing only rumours for months. Ailing automaker Chrysler was thrilled to have the steady traffic in their display, to keep their brand front and center during the show. On the following weekend, the Challenger was hauled out to the Red Bull Drifting World Championships held in the Port of Long Beach. Unfortunately for drifting fanatics, the Challenger did little more than just look pretty posting up at the NuFormz / Mopar booth. Hubinette however brought out the proven artillery with his Mopar Viper SRT-10 and qualified second … in the world! He then went on to carve his way through the 32-car field and wound up fighting Foust in the consolation round. Foust got the third place win but the two time Formula D Champion (2004 & 2006) was thrilled to secure fourth out of the top drifters on the planet. The Challenger however is not shelved, not by a long shot. When they make a move, they aren’t going to settle for second place and the Challenger is undergoing some refinements before its competition debut. The new car is not short on power, not by a long-shot. The 6.1L Hemi crate motor was replaced with a 430 cubic inch (7.0L) Mopar Performance Sprint car motor built by Gary Stanton. It’s an A8 block with raised port W9 heads. With a staggering 14.8:1 compression, the Gary Stanton Racing Engines-built motor pumps out 850hp at 7200rpm on methanol… oh yeah! 86

Motivation The 524whp bump comes from an ATP GT30-40R turbo upgrade bolted to a Buschur ported manifold. This subtle road roacket is daily-driven and always ready for action according to its smiling owner, Dallin Felton The attention turned to the rolling gear, which had to be light and of course super strong. When you are looking for the perfect blend of the two, you don’t have to shop much further than Enkei that use the M.A.T. forging process. A set of classic Enkei RPF1s were selected all around in 17x10-inch with a hefty +18 offset. Then the wheels were cloaked with Hankook Ventus 275/35R17 tires on all four corners which took some science to tuck them in with no rubbing issues. The exact wheel fit was achieved with BC Racing coilovers that provided the right adjustability for height and dampening to prevent contact. The suspension was further improved by a Hotchkis rear sway bar, Perrin end links and a GT Spec frame brace. Inside the EVO are a handful of improvements to an already solid factory interior. The stock seats were pulled in favor of NRG Innovations carbon fiber racing buckets draped with 4-point Takata harnesses. An AEM UEGO gauge was added to keep tabs on the mix, while Defi Blue Racer gauges (Boost & EGT) reside in a Perrin steering column pod. 92

ow do you improve upon one of the best selling cars of all time? One that’s won countless awards and has several hundred thousand still on the road today? Well, it requires real talent and skill to take a good thing and making it even better. Case in point, the crew over at Design Tech in Catskills, NY, who took a stock 2008 Ford Focus SES Coupe and transformed it into something unrecognizable. If you know your classic exotics then the inspiration is obvious, the Gulf Ford GT40 from 1968. The never duplicated color scheme is instantly recognizable by any car buff. After many late nights and several computer renderings, the final design scheme was decided. “Taking cues from the Ford GT40, we blend ed raw power and innovative technologies to create a vehicle that speaks for itself,” says Design Tech owner Colm Derasmo. “We dubbed the car the ‘DT40’ to pay homage to Design Tech and the 40 days we had to build it.”

The doors feature some Kicker SS 6.5-inch mid-bass speakers inside custom door panels. There are also a set of Kicker RS 5.25-inch components to reproduce the highs driven by a Kicker ZX150.2. In the back are a pair of Kicker 815 subs driven by a Kicker ZX500.1 mono amp all of which are lit up by an illuminated ‘DT40’ logo.

e have seen behind the walls of factories producing many of the products and performance parts you install on your ride. Some operations are fairly modest and focused on their products while others are simply spectacular showpieces where you could eat off the floor! The type of behind-the-scenes shop visits we find most impressive tend to be ones with a full manufacturing facility that does nearly everything in house. Even more impressive are companies like that operating right here at home without having to outsource to low-cost manufacturers overseas. Let’s face it, these guys truly have the drive to compete against other manufacturers in order to keep the jobs, the quality assurance and the top level product all back in the USA.

W

One of our recent shop tours at SPEC clutch based in Bessember, AL who pride themselves in not re-branding product from overseas. Their facility occupies over 30,000 square feet and is filled with state of the art equipment to produce a variety of clutches and flywheels for a wide range of performance vehicles. SPEC is also very proficient at engineering and manufacturing new products quite rapidly. Need proof? Well, at the time of writing this, SPEC had just released and an application for the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe, a car that launched only three months prior! SPEC is always on the fast track to rapid prototyping with virtually any high performance platform that shows high tuning potential and strong aftermarket support for more horsepower. “We carefully follow the development of hot new platforms coming to market,” says Marketing Manager Shelly Norton. “So by the time it hits market (or sometimes before), we often obtain a donor car immediately to begin our development process.” The team at SPEC has had to follow the development of new platforms as well. How much power can be realistically produced and what purpose is the car being used for primarily? After those variables are established, the team sets out to prototype new clutches and R&D refinements go into production. Without counting the multi-disc

and custom clutches, SPEC offers 7 stages of performance for most applications. The range allows a balance of torque capacity and drivability to give enthusiasts the best possible fit for their needs and driving style. The process begins with raw material shipments to the plant. High carbon billet steel, aircraft quality billet aluminum and loads of associated hardware are required. Most single disc units utilize a stamped steel cover, while some single and all multidisc assemblies utilize a cover, pressure plate and floaters machined on site from billet on one of SPEC’s many multi-axis CNC machines. A billet steel or billet aluminum flywheel is machined to compliment the clutch assemblies. Friction discs are assembled with SPEC proprietary materials using one or more of 7 compound options and multiple surface area ratios. The kits are assembled and balanced to race tolerances to ensure years of trouble-free street driving, track use or both. SPEC representatives ask all the right questions when a consumer is looking for a clutch and have the knowledge to make the application perfect.

When it’s time to ship, the majority of custom orders ship out within 24-48 hours, a feat rarely seen in the aftermarket performance world. Should a customer have any questions or need any service after the sale, SPEC delivers in the area of customer service. “SPEC offers the best guarantee in the industry,” says Norton. “We provide access to an unlimited diagnostic based system and unlimited technical assistance from 7:30AM-5:00PM Central Time. It doesn’t even matter where you purchased the product, we stand behind all of our products. Even though it is costly to man the phones with professionals during the week, our products are still very competitively priced.” With a line of products ranging from a step above stock in a street disc to an aggressive multi-plate clutch, SPEC has got the clutch and flywheel department covered. They have even used their engineering capabilities to expand into other driveline products. SPEC offers high performance input shafts and gears as well as niche products like push to pull style conversion units. Suffice to say, if it has 4-wheels and a motor, then SPEC probably has an application for it, even if the car is right off the dealer lot.

fter another triumphant return to Toronto, the Castrol Drift Mania Canadian Championships (DMCC) gave fans the entertainment, car show competition, and drift action the series is known for. With the qualifying and ProAms out of the way, it was time for the Drift Mania drivers (mostly Quebecers) to put on a clinic. Unlike last year though, 2009 has been dominated by drivers from outside La Belle Province. American, Matt Waldin (Import Intelligence 350Z) was leading the points into the event and Ontario’s own Pat Cyr won the first two events in his Privateer Corolla. Two time defending champion, “Steady” Freddie Girard (Kumho Skyline) hasn’t taken first place yet this year, but has been consistent enough to cement 3rd in the points standings. Relative newcomer Cyr won the first two events and Waldin took Round 3, but would we see a repeat of the Pat ‘n’ Matt show?

In the final battle it was Matt Waldin in his twin turbo 350Z versus Claude Poirier in the BFGoodrich Nissan 240. The V8-powered 240 had the power to keep up, but the skill level was no match for Waldin who has been on a roll lately. To add to BFGoodrich’s reputation (and tires championship points) driver Ryan Lanteigne bagged 3rd spot in his BFGoodrich GTO. The BFGoodrich Team could very well have made it podium spots 1, 2, 3 had driver Carl Nadeau not had a horrible crash earlier in the day. Nadeau was piloting the BFG Solstice and found his path after a clutch kick straight toward a concrete barrier. “I hit the wall at over 100km/h… but the superior design of the cage in this car saved me,” said Nadeau. Steady improvement has been seen by all DMCC drivers, but the new kids on the block are making it very difficult for veterans like “Steady” Freddy Girard and company, as he will not see a three-peat for the championship this year. Waldin however has it all but sealed up, barring any sort of disaster for the fifth and final round.

s expected, the big story surrounding the days leading up to FD Round 6 at Infineon was the points chase. It was clear that two-time champion Tanner Foust would be dethroned but which sharpshooter would it be. Chris Forsberg was leading the points race and some consistency would lock it down for him. However, waiting to strike were Ryan Tuerck in the Gardella/Mobil 1 Solstice and Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken 350Z. Forsberg has definitely been on point but it would take some skilled driving to knock him from his perch. The track was ideal, the weather superb – it was time to get sideways. If qualifying was any indication of what would happen, then Forsberg would be a threat. He qualified third behind Ryuji Miki in the A’PEXi/Hankook/ Exedy Clutch Mazda FD RX-7 and Katsuhiro Ueo Drift Speed/Behrman S15 Silvia who was first. Some of the big guns were off pace with Tuerck 7th and McQuarrie who qualified a dismal 13th. On to the eliminations where some great action and trademark Formula D drama unfolded. There were mechanical problems and last minute repairs to keep teams alive. Former champ, Sam Hubinette in the NuFormz Dodge Viper defeated Tuerck who was hungry for some points but they would elude him. Then Forsberg’s most important match-up versus Calvin Wan in the Falken S15. The battle was tight, too tight as Wan made contact with Forsberg damaging his front suspension. It was clear that the five minute repair was not enough to keep the Z competitive and in an unusual move, the judges

A

demanded a One More Tim e (OMT) after a onesided run. However, without any additional time spent on the Z it would be certain Forsberg would likely bow out. After the loss , it was not without protest and they were gra nted a rematch. In the rematch Wan slid into For sberg again and in the same spot, gift-wrapping the win for Forsberg. However, Forsberg was not able to best Stephan Vernier in the Cooper Tire s/Crawford Performance/Rhys Millen Racing Subaru STi in the following round. Teammates Ken Gushi (in the RS*R Scion) was paired against Foust in his Scion but the former champ was no match for the young gun. With better lines and speed, Gushi left Foust behind to battle it out for third. Foust and Mik i were paired up where their tight tandem earned them an OMT from the judges. After the second cat and mouse run, yet

Formula D 11.08.indd 3

another OMT was requested of the fatigued drivers. Foust eventually cracked by making contact with the lethal RX-7 that cemente d third place for the Japanese driver, Miki. In the finals, it was the unf amiliar face up against the young Gushi. Man y in the crowd thought that it would be a bloodbath with the Japanese-American victorio us. For Gushi though, it was no to be when on the second lap, the Scion tC gave up and could not be restarted. The win was Vernier’s first in Formu la D and he couldn’t be happier considering he has never gone past the Great-8 in three years of FD competition. An emotional Vernier thanked his team and sponsors for the win after an event tha t put Forsberg in a tight spot to win the Cha mpionship. Forsberg will need to advance into the Top 16 and beyond in the final round to seal up a title for 2009.

o one thing and do it well. That’s the advice I’ve always been given. If you look around our industry, there are many great companies out there firmly focused on their core business and perfecting their craft. Case in point, Specialty Products Company (SPC Performance). They carved out their reputation building suspension components for circle track, muscle cars and hot rods producing applications that just didn’t exist elsewhere. Over the past decade, SPC has realized there is a huge demand for niche products for Sport Compact and European vehicles too. Since many of today’s customized cars are lowered, SPC released all kinds of camber correction kits and various arms to correct the change in geometry. Our 3-series BMW tester was a textbook case of too much camber and was simply chewing through tires at an alarming rate. Not only is this expensive, but also dangerous since the inside wall can overheat and cause a blow-out. Our E36 has been fitted with Bilstein PSS coilovers on their lowest possible setting which resulted in an aggressive -3.5° of camber and no way to dial it out with stock arms. We turned to Vickie Wheeler in the Marketing Department of SPC to consult her about how we can correct the problem while keeping the car slammed. Simple, they have not one, but two different styles of rear camber arms for the 1992-1999 E36 (except Ti and Z3). These arms coincidentally also fit newer style E46 chassis as well. Although, SPC makes an affordable steel EZ Arm (#67110) we opted for the sexy #72110 aluminum arms. These 6061 T6 aluminum clear anodized arms feature red anodized lock nuts and loads of thread to adjust the camber from -1.0° to 3.0° in total. The range provides even more camber than we already had (not recommended) or could allow us to adjust it positively to almost zero. Our installer also happened to be alignment and race

car set-up guru, Scott Murfin from CAN-Alignment just outside Toronto, ON. Murfin recommended we also install the #72070 SPC front camber plates as well to make tweaks up front for a perfectly balanced car. Installation was a snap with detailed instructions and all necessary hardware. SPC supplied the outer bolts for the rear arms but you definitely want to buy new OE inboard bolts that they don’t supply because in our case both snapped on disassembly! Murfin corner balanced the Bimmer and then set it up on the alignment rack. He noted that all four corners were different and he would finesse the SPC rear camber arms, front camber plates and the OEM tie rods to create a cornering monster. After getting

a baseline, I jumped in to ensure my weight was accounted for in the driver seat. Murfin ended up with the following settings: front left camber was -1.25° and -1.0° on the right and in the rear, the settings were reduced to -2.5° and -2.25° for a balance between grip and tire life. The end result was new life to this aging tuner car. The small BMW gripped harder though corners with minimal understeer and the Falken RT-615 tires no longer make any noise in protest. After a track time visit to Toronto Motorsports Park, the lightweight 2866lb BMW held its own with many higher horsepower cars, proof that you don’t need crazy horsepower to go fast but rather, the right suspension setup.

A full BN Sports aerokit was added including front fascia, rear bumper and flared sideskirts. The hood and mirrors have been replaced with carbon fiber units from Carbon Culture. Danco IRL supplied the fibreglass rear hatch and doors to trim some weight as did the Lexan window replacements. To get the car sideways and keep it there, O’Sullivan spent countless hours on the chassis setup. A set of adjustable KYB AGX dampers were modified with Ground Control coilover conversions. Ueo Style front tension rods and lower control arms were added for more suspension tweaks. T3 was contacted for a set of front camber plates, custom tie rods, 4-links and pan hard rods. Whiteline traction brackets were added in addition to a Battle Version steering lock kit to round out the suspension. The brakes were fairly simple, stock calipers fitted with Ferodo pads, SS lines and EBC slotted rotors. The attention turned to the chassis to make it as stiff as possible. The entire car was seam-welded and a 10-point cage was fabricated for both safety and rigidity. The rolling gear had to be on-point to keep the car competitive. O’Sullivan sourced some Image wheels from the UK measuring 16x7.5-inch front with 16x9-inch in the rear featuring aggressive -40mm offsets. Sponsor Hankook stepped up with skid after skid

Motivation With much controversy, an F20C inline-4 from a Honda S2000 was slipped into the engine bay. Without engineering something custom, the team stuck with the Honda 6-speed box but this required a custom driveshaft to make it sing on the track.

The cockpit is all about functionality. A modified dashboard features a custom carbon fiber switch panel and gauge cluster. Danco IRL supplied the fibreglass rear hatch and doors to trim some weight as did the Lexan window replacements. With O’Sullivan achieving top honours on his home turf in this AE86, he is pleased with how far the trusty Toyota took him. With a new Subaru ride and some major backing, his skills will be focused in a more corporate direction. Coming from the tiny market of Ireland, stepping up to the Formula D series is truly making it in the big leagues.
