in 3.8 seconds I can tell you why I use valvoline in my own car More top NHrA crew chiefs use Valvoline in their race cars and their own cars. Top fuel engines are perhaps the ultimate test of a motor oil. They quickly tell you what works, and what doesn’t. Which is why Don Schumacher Racing team manager Lee Beard and every one of DSR’s crew chiefs trust Valvoline in their race cars and their cars at home too.

HSD TYPE-HR 15 WAY REBOUND AND COMPRESSION ADJUSTABLE
HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS
Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twin-tube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.
HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
A very wide range of height adjustment is possible without affecting the spring pre-load or the damper stroke length. So whether you want sporty or totally slammed, you still get the full performance of the damper.
FULLY ADJUSTABLE DAMPING
Our 16 Stage damping adjustment allows quick, easy and accurate control of the damping so you can tune it to suit your style and setup. Set to soft for your daily drive, then quickly switch to hard for track days or competition use.
PILLOWBALL TOP MOUNTS
Our coilovers come with Anodised Aluminium top mounts with integrated heavy duty noise-free pillowball bearings all round. A wide range of camber adjustment is included on front strut models.

WE MADE IT… elcome to the 10th year of Performance Auto & Sound Magazine! When you think about it, celebrating ten great years in this business is quite an accomplishment. After all, almost anyone can start a magazine, but it takes a truly talented and dedicated crew to give it life and make it into something special. Ever since we entered the scene back at the turn of the century, PAS was the first automotive tuning publication to introduce the concept of blending aftermarket performance and styling with mobile electronics. The automotive aftermarket and 12-volt communities rarely intertwined until PAS came along, and now it seems unthinkable to have one without the other. In many respects, PAS is a pioneer in this “total-tuning” philosophy and remains the only publication to successfully execute the formula. We had the foresight to predict the mixing of these previously thought-to-be separate markets and helped usher in a new era of diverse automotive customization. From high decibels to high horsepower, we’ve always appreciated the passion and effort behind every automotive build. While other editors prefer to work desk duty in their corner offices, we’re busy wrenching, racing and reppin’ for the scene... just like you. How do we do it? A strict diet of Red Bull, Grey Goose and race fuel is our best guess. But seriously, very few magazines can touch the amount of hours and miles our Editorial team racks up on the road meeting readers and enthusiats in person and discovering the hot cars, events and models you’ve come to expect in Performance Auto & Sound Magazine. Immeasurable amounts of hard work are poured into every issue that has ever hit newsstands, and the team that makes it happen can’t be credited enough. From our production team, event staff, editorial and sales staff – PAS is a tight-knit group that works tirelessly to bring you the absolute best tuner magazine on the market.
W
“Our magazine has truly stood the test of time and grown to become the source for sport compact and car audio enthusiasts around the world. “ It wasn’t long ago that PAS was the fresh faced rookie in the game, but since our debut we’ve proven ourselves and always stayed true to our enthusiast roots. Over our ten years of covering the scene, we’ve witnessed massive shifts in tuning culture and seen many things come and go. Who knew we’d survive “what were they thinking” fads like altezza taillights and LED windshield washer nozzles? Our scene has significantly grown from its original fan base of underground import enthusiasts to a massive tuning subculture of society and PAS Magazine has been there every step of the way. Much respect goes out to all those who’ve always believed in us and continue to enjoy our unique style and content. Our magazine has truly stood the test of time and grown to become the source for sport compact and car audio enthusiasts around the world. We’d like to personally thank all you faithful PAS readers for sticking with us and I’d like to express our humble gratitude for your never-ending support. At a time when other publications continue to dwindle in size and cut back on content, you can count on us to lead the way and deliver great value for years to come. All of you loyal readers and recent fans had better look out for our special 10th Anniversary issue scheduled to hit newsstands later this year! This collector-edition issue will commemorate the greatest all-time vehicles, events, models and moments to ever appear within the past ten years of Performance Auto & Sound. Our 10th Anniversary issue has got the makings of the hottest magazine to ever drop on newsstands! Although we’ve lost count of the projects, articles and tuners we’ve come across over the last ten years, we continue to be impressed by the dedication and passion enthusiasts still share with us on a regular basis. Here’s to our successful ten years in the game and the many more to come! 14

s one of the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshows, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the place where audiophiles, gadget junkies and gaming addicts all unite. With over 3-million square feet of products, technology and press conferences to cover, CES sets the tone for all the years’ electronic innovations. Not only did we get the inside scoop on a few hot new prototype products in the works, but we actually got to see, hear and use a few production-ready samples ourselves. Trends like digital (mechless) receivers, iPod interfaces, mini amplifiers, shallow mount speakers and OEM integration solutions are all leading the charge in 2010. As other magazines are notably absent from the scene, we continue to deliver and dedicate editorial coverage on the latest aftermarket mobile electronics. We’ve filtered through the large crowds and elaborate displays to bring you these highlights from CES 2010. For more photos and exclusive videos, be sure to visit us online at www.pasmag.com.

very year we put our daily lives on hold and hop on a plane for Tokyo Auto Salon. After 13 hours living it up in First Class, we arrive in Japan the following day after crossing the International Date Line. The first order of business was to meet up with our friend Mike from Mishimoto and drop off our bagage at the hotel. The night before the main event, we went out to party in Roppongi to blow off some steam. We met up with import model Nicolette Lacson at the club and came home after one too many Saki and Asahis. But when we hit the pillow, we couldn’t sleep because for enthusiasts like us, the excitement of Tokyo Auto Salon easily tops that feeling on Christmas morning. In our current tough economy, we were expecting a lean year at TAS as it was even rumoured that one hall would be dark. When we arrived at TAS 2010, we couldn’t be more wrong because everything was bigger and better over last year. There were 20-percent more vendors, more attendees and a historical record of 624 juicy show cars to drool over! Sure, the content has changed a bit over the years to accommodate more mini-vans, apparel and different accessories, but more of the most hardcore builds are found here than any place else in the world. So without further delay, let’s get down to business.

GRIPPING PERFORMANCE ON THE TRACK. AND BACK.
Extreme speeds, extraordinary g-forces, punishing braking – the track delivers the perfect variety of punishment to serve as the ultimate testing ground for new tire technology. That’s why Yokohama has been a part of the American Le Mans Series since it began in 1998. It’s why we’ve been selected as the spec tire for the FIA World Touring Car Championship. And it’s why the 2009 Patrón GT3 Challenge is running only on Yokohama tires. So when you mount a set of ADVAN Neova® AD08 tires onto your car, know that you’re driving with the most advanced racing technologies available today.

1 It goes without saying that you can predict many of the top builds for Tokyo Auto Salon. Back in the day VeilSide used to take the title for the most outrageous builds, but these days it is shared amongst players like: HKS, RE Amemiya and aftermarket retail giant Super AutoBACs. Toyota was not to be outdone by the aftermarket this year and dropped the highly anticipated G Sports conversion for the new FT-86, a compact FR platform. The stunning new school ‘hachi’ rocks loads of carbon fibre accents, a mas-
2
sive CF wing and larger exhausts. The car will be in production soon, but because it will only have 200 of NA horsepower coming from its Subaru-built boxer engine, we did see an intercooler lurking behind the front bumper of this custom machine. These dealer upgrades are currently for the JDM market only but we’ll find a way to boost it. Toyota also threw in a game-changer, with a fully race-prepped Lexus LF-A. Built by Gazoo Racing, the LF-A is entering the 24-hours of Nurburgring

endurance race. It was great to see outrageous gasburning projects still alive and well, but it is inevitable that global environmental concerns will mean more tuned “ECO” cars (the Prius was out in force too, by the way). There were many Kei cars on display (660cc or less) and hybrids galore in various states of tune all over the show floor. Not exactly what North American enthusiasts want to see but let’s remember that Japanese gas prices are lofty and micro cars just make sense in that market.

The real BRIDE seats were all at TAS in full force, not be confused with the many knock-offs out there 5. Yes, US models did show up and that is PAS Cover-girl Nicolette Lacson on the right 6. Is it just me or is TEIN’s mascot Dampachi riding that Goodyear blimp in hall 3? 7. Yummy “JDM giels” were everywhere wearing swanky race queen gear 8. A prototype Kumho tire seen here features a high tech circuit board tread pattern... but likely won’t be mass produced. 28

1 If Tokyo Auto Salon has a dominant manufacturer, it would have to be Nissan. Their exciting 1990s platforms seem to never falter even though they are now more than a decade old. Some of the most popular builds are still the Silvias and Skylines of that era. The new GT-R and now the 370Z have certainly regained the faith of these Nissan diehards and the R35 GT-R remains a crowd pleaser two years after it debuted. This year, the hyped-up show
2
car was the ‘Silver Wolf’ a TommyKaira Edition GT-R with upgraded wheels, tires, brakes, exhaust, suspension and the aero of a carbon widebody kit to improve upon perfection. What Tokyo Auto Salon would be complete without some crazy RX-7s from legendary tuner RE Amemiya? Even though the RX-7 last rolled of the line in 2002, Amemiya-san continued to raise the bar on the rotary power beast. For 2010, he
3

dropped the Wangan Racing special, a study of aero dynamics and power for top speed inside the legendary Yokohama tunnel. Rumored to reach speeds of 350km/h, the Wangan Racer borrowed headlights from an Elise and tails from an R34 but the balance was all form created inside Amemiyasan’s head. Around the show, many RX-7s remained popular with legends like the Supra and NSX almost nowhere to be found.

Since the twin beds were almost touching, our tour guide Mike of Mishimoto agreed it was a little too intimate and we upgraded, ASAP! We have to give thanks to our host, Mishimoto who provided us with a unique tour of Japan. Mike has done the TAS trip many times and gave us special insights on each and every manufacturer at the show. Mike and the reps from Tomei showed us the car culture on the streets of Tokyo too. At the end of our journey, we all had a chance to say our good-byes and threw one last party to put a cap on a great TAS and Tokyo experience.

hrottle he one thing we can count on seeing at every SEMA Show is improvement. It was truly impressive to see new hardware and products on display from the aftermarket despite a tough economy. There were many impressive builds from the outrageous mid-engine V8 Genesis Coupe by Rhys Millen to the Canadian-built Super Cuda powered by a twin turbo V10 topping out at 208 mph. We even saw a couple of past PAS Magazine features with enough tweaks to consider them fresh... but then there was K&N, who took one of their former features and tore it up to create this Time Attack assassin. K&N Engineering Inc. of Riverside, California is famous the world over for providing performance filters
T
with effective filtration for anything that moves. Their dominance in the marketplace means that they have the funds to do just about anything they want. K&N has a substantial facility that houses a serious skunk works boasting a huge shop and R&D area where the magic happens. Our friends at K&N gave us the inside scoop on this G35 and, had we not heard it directly from them, we’d never have believed it. This particular G is actually one that K&N has had in their line-up since 2003. The most recent round of modifications was not only the most extreme, but represented the third time this car would be totally transformed. The final version you see here was purpose built to make a serious statement on the road course, well ahead of the pack.

POWERHOUSE // A Jim Wolf Technologies (JWT) system was selected featuring the quick-spooling Jim Wolf Sport 700BB (GT28RS-based) turbos. Air is hauled in with a K&N Series 69 intake and flows with custom intercooler piping by K&N. The project got underway by completely stripping the vehicle, sandblasting it and seam welding the chassis. All of the metal was removed forward of the strut towers and replaced with tubing for weight reduction and to set the stage for custom wizardry. The block was machined, balanced and blueprinted before the cylinders were plugged with CP Pistons slugs. The pistons were bolted up to Pauter forged Chromoly rods pushing a knife-edged crankshaft. The heads were ported and polished then filled with SuperTech stainless steel intake valves and Inconel exhaust valves. The assembly was then bolted back with ARP studs sandwiching Cometic headgaskets. The twin turbo system was a major consideration for a critical balance of response and power. A Jim Wolf Technologies (JWT) system was chosen featuring quick-spooling Garrett GT28RS-based turbos. Air is hauled in with a K&N custom intake and flows around the engine with custom intercooler piping by K&N. The compressed air is chilled with twin Bell intercoolers, before heading through an Accufab throttle body and custom K&N plenum. Any excess air is vented by a monster TiAL blow-off valve to prevent surge on the high RPM compressor wheels. To fuel the fire, K&N technicians added a custom fuel system using an Aeromotive S1000 pump, fuel pressure regulator and RC Engineering 750cc injectors. Post combustion, the fumes are channeled into JWT downpipes connected to a custom stainless steel exhaust built by K&N. After the AEM wideband was installed and the AEM EMS standalone connected, the 40

FOOTWORK // A set of KW Suspension Competition coilovers were selected for ride height and dampening tweaks. A Speedway Engineering front sway was installed to eliminate roll and upper control arms were installed to play with the rear camber. G35 was fired up. The tuning commenced on the K&N dyno and the final numbers had the K&N crew feeling pumped. The car put down a respectable 512 whp with 440 lb-ft. of instant response to rocket out of the corners and keep pulling until it was time to brake. More jam meant that the driveline needed a boost and K&N pulled no punches by installing Tilton gear. A Tilton 5-inch triple plate sintered metallic clutch was installed along with a Tilton ultra lightweight flywheel. But the clutch didn’t get installed into the questionable Infiniti 6-speed box but rather a Tremec Dodge Viper tranny modified to fit. The power is transmitted from there through an Inland Empire Driveline aluminum driveshaft, a Quaife LSD and Driveshaft Shop stage 5 axles. Since the build was meant to be used on the track, the running gear was carefully selected and tuned. A set of KW Suspension Competition coilovers were selected for ride height and dampening tweaks. A Speedway Engineering front sway was installed to eliminate roll and STILLEN upper control arms were installed to play with the camber. Additionally, rear

trailing arms, toe arms and custom lower control arms were designed and fabricated by K&N. To maintain rigidity, some SPL Parts differential bushings and solid sub-frame mounts. K&N didn’t cut any corners on the grip gear. The team selected Volk RE30s in matte black measuring 18 x 9.5-inches up front, and 18 x 10-inches in the rear. Lurking behind the spokes are StopTech ST45 4-piston calipers with 355 mm floating rotors. Clamping down on the rotors are Hawk Competition pads pushed by hydraulics filled with Motul RBF600. During the extensive chassis modification a Redline Time Attack-spec cage was added. The multipoint cage adds to the rigidity of the car and ramps up the safety for the driver. A pair of Sparco Pro 2000 racing seats were added and draped with Sparco 5-point harnesses. A Sparco Competition 260 steering wheel handles the drive inputs and a B&M shifter was added to bang the next gear. To relay engine vitals, a Racepack IQ3 Datalogger Dash replaced the cluster, allowing the team to dissect the numbers.

Up next were some of the more important considerations in order to reduce weight and to manage the air flow to keep it glued to the track. Seibon was contacted to pitch in with their carbon fiber: hood, fender, trunk and even doorskins to shave off precious pounds. A G-Stream adjustable carbon fiber wing was added for downforce along with a Competition Performance front splitter to reduce lift. Before Race Design plastered on the vinyl, the pivotal piece was the Viral Sport front bumper, which Cabrera informs us is the only one in existence With the right team, the funds and the facilities, the K&N crew was sure to build a monster. Although a wealth of aftermarket parts exists, K&N decided to fabricate a lot of items to showcase their capabilities right down accessories like the billet battery tie down! They have certainly outdone themselves with this build and if they contract a ringer behind the wheel, they should do some damage in 2010. Whether it is Redline Time Attack or any other track event, look for the G35 to cause a ruckus in Unlimited RWD.

s part of our rolling Scion showcase, our project car received a number of upgrades and tweaks. Whether it’s the design of the project, the prototype wheels or the new audio system, our Project Scion is barely recognizable from last year. The mission for 2008 was simple, put the project together in record time as our Hot Import Nights tour centerpiece. Scion supplied the xD with precious time left before it was hurried off to a series of events, but in the off-season, our team spent some time rethinking the project and a fresh concept was born. The bulk of the work went into strengthening and tuning the motor in anticipation of more boost. The AEM Fuel Ignition Controller was retuned to throw more fuel at the project with an increase in our project bringing a 20whp gain and ultra-smooth driveability.

ome cite its design as being over aggressive or having way too many curves, but I’ve always thought the Infiniti FX series of crossovers were something decidedly more hip and modern. From my perspective it looks more like a bionic cheetah ready to pounce. Since its debut, this platform has delivered solid high performance and shown strong aftermarket potential, but no one dared do it. However, a few brave souls ventured out in to uncharted territory when Viet Nguyen of Los Angeles, CA started on this project. As the Event Manager for TWCompetition, Nguyen had high expectations and basically couldn’t stop himself when it came to this project. As a result, we have been chasing this car down for over two years while it was in an out of the shop with new mods being added literally every week. We’re still just as thrilled to finally get it in this issue, mostly because the spec sheet was even more elaborate than we had anticipated. This isn’t some baby-balls, low pressure supercharger with

an unmolested engine bay. It is totally rebuilt from the ground up with all of the right hardware. When Nguyen sourced out parts for his VQ35 engine build, he didn’t venture further than Cosworth. As one of the leading authorities in hard parts, Cosworth supplied the forged pistons and H-Beam connecting rods to the crankshaft supported by tri-metal bearings. Up top, the ported and polished head was filled with Cosworth 1mm oversized valves, titanium retainers and 272 cams. The head is fed with air from a Cosworth twin-plenum manifold and fuel is delivered with a Cosworth high-volume fuel system and SARD 800cc injectors. The forced induction comes by way of a Jim Wolf Technology 700 twin turbo system. Featuring twin Garrett GT30 ball-bearing turbos, the system was complimented by a GReddy front mount WWW.PASMAG.COM – PERFORMANCE AUTO & SOUND

intercooler, Technosquare 70mm test pipes and a GReddy Evo TT exhaust. The increase in boost meant a lot of heat would be generated and the PWR rad, Samco hoses and GTM electric fan and shroud now kept the temps in check. The system also required an oil cooler where a custom one was fabricated out of an Earl’s core and stainless steel lines. The whole ensemble was tuned by a Technosquare remapped ECU, which translated into over double the factory horsepower! Of course only a man’s clutch would handle that and the task was given to an Exedy triple carbon clutch. A Cusco 1.5-way rear LSD was also added in addition to a 3.91 final drive from a 350Z. As you might expect, all of that power has to be controlled. Nguyen sourced out a set of HKS S-Style coilovers for ride height and dampening adjustment. Since there are very few suspension parts for this car, Nguyen has some items customized from SPC and SPL. An SPC rear toe bolt kit and camber kit were modified to fit as were the SPL 350Z parts like the end links. The chassis was cinched up with every GT Spec polished brace that was found in the catalogue. A Brembo GT big brake kit was added with a 6-piston 380mm combo up front utilizing a 4-piston / 345mm rear. This unique Brembo brake kit also features many one-off production pieces. With enlarged brakes (and need for traction) and an enormous set of Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetricos and HRE 648R wheels measure 22 x 10.5-inches up front and 22 x 12-inches on the rear valued at $20,000 alone!

AUDIO ASSAULT // The headunit is Alpine’s venerable IVA-D310 7-inch touchscreen with an additional IVA-W505 in the rear. Nguyen added a few Alpine expansions including a PXA-H701 Multimedia Manager, NVE-N872A DVD Navigation System and the KCA-420I Ipod Interface.
Requiring a custom full metal widebody to accommodate the wheels, the FX35 was shipped to Auto Explosion. Once the custom metal work was complete, the shell was blasted in several coats of blue and clear coats. But the assault on the senses was just beginning as the multimedia install got underway. The entire interior created by CarNutz Customz was gutted to make way for a load of Dynamat to keep out road noise and keep in sounds from its new multimedia system. An Alpine IVA-D310 7-inch touchscreen, IVA-W505, PXA-H701 multimedia manager, NVE-N872A DVD navigation system and KCA-420I iPod Interface make up the mobile elecronics system. Vizual Logic supplied the 7-inch headrest monitors fed by the secondary Alpine DVD unit. The highs are delegated to a Zapco Audio DC1000.4 amp feeding Dynaudio Front Esotec 364 3-way and Dynaudio 262 2-way speakers. Sure it’s a rare sight to see a custom Infiniti FX built to this level, but Nguyen’s unique approach to this platform was more than refreshing to see. Beneath all its visual upgrades beats the heart of a high horsepower supercar, as its twin turbo VQ can easily embarrass most cars on the road today.

he big, brash and unapologetic Ford Excursion certainly took the already excessive SUV craze to monster-sized proportions. The gargantuan 9-seater truck is almost 10,000 pounds and can carry the contents of a 1-bedroom apartment with ease. Don Brooks of Big Tyme Industries aimed for this Excursion to tower above all others on a grand scale. After three dedicated years, his Excursion went from a capable diesel hauler to something rarely seen on city streets. “I’m married with 5

children and needed a big vehicle… so I chose the Excursion for obvious reasons at the time,” says Brooks. The diesel engine makes loads of power and is great for hauling around town. Brooks wanted to build something that would stand tall and stand out as a rolling billboard for his company, showcasing the capabilities of what they can build at Big Tyme. The custom work started on the motor first, as the diesel now cranks out enough torque to pull down a large house. The intake was replaced
with an Airaid unit and the exhaust is a heavy duty MBRP stainless steel 4-inch turbo back with a menacing 6-inch tip. “It’s straight piped and sounds like a jet plane while it’s turbo spools up!” smiles Brooks. Industrial injection was contacted for some bigger injectors and a new tune to add 60 more horsepower. When the dust settled, the mighty Ford 6.0L diesel laid down 468whp with a staggering 937lb-ft of torque! With almost 1,000 pounds of torque under the hood, Brooks did not pull any punches on

the exterior of the truck either. Starting with a blacked out Harley Davidson Edition Excursion, he left most of the truck black but added splashes of color. More specifically, House of Kolor Champagne and Bitter Sweet II by Super Stripes in Las Vegas. After the work was done, many coats of clear with wet sanding in between meant the paint would have a mirror gloss finish. For suspension, an Icon Vehicle Dynamics lift kit raises the spindles 10-inches from the Excursion’s stock ride height. A set of Fox Racing shocks were added for rough terrain and Icon sway bars to keep it from tipping over. Stepping up, Brooks sourced out a totally custom design of Weld Racing 24x12-inch wheels, ensuring these are the only four in existence! The custom rollers are wrapped in Toyo Open Country mudders, measuring 37x13.50R24 all around. All that extra weight at each corner meant it was also time for a brake system upgrade in the form of a Ford Racing set-up featuring 14-inch rotors with high performance 4-piston calipers. The inside of the Excursion was like nothing we have seen in a while with its functional yet wild approach. Fat Boy Customs in Las Vegas, NV completely gutted the interior of the beast and got to work recovering or redesigning everything in sight. The seats were recovered in Black Tuscany leather with Crocodile skin inserts by Katzkin. The whole interior is recovered in tribal theme suede from top to bottom and every panel in between.

Finally, the stage was set for a monumental multimedia install. Something that the audio experts at Soundstream would gladly handpick for this project and spend hundreds of man hours completing. f you were ever curious about what three years and several hundred thousand dollars does to a project car, you don’t have to look much further than this 350Z. Owned by car enthusiast, male model and TV personality Tyson Beckford, this Z33 has been under constant construction. Although we saw what looked like a complete and ready to roll 350Z at SEMA 2007, Tyson insisted that it was going back to shops across the country to take it to the next level. “I went through a lot of hassle with this project,” Tyson admits. “You see these nice shops with great shop cars and even they sometimes end up being not exactly as advertised. So after a few setbacks, I stepped it up and couldn’t be happier with the partners I work with today.”

The most striking feature of the car is the brilliant gold carbon fiber cladding. Many panels have been completely removed and designed in carbon fiber with Beckford’s technology partner, Seibon. The carbon experts over at Seibon assembled a one-of-a-kind gold weave for his ride, now that’s VIP. The hood and hatch are all carbon fiber as are all four fenders, which have been widened to increase the track of the Z a few inches. To top it all off, a set of sculpted C-West sideskirts were painted a blazing red by Wet Works. The only other exterior item that isn’t carbon clad is the roof and it wasn’t available at the time. When it came to selecting some sweet rollers for the project, Beckford wanted something that was simple, yet would stand out. He contacted his boys Carlos and Sergio over at Kinesis wheels for a set of Kinesis K58 wheels to die for. These 19-inch forged wheels feature a gold face with polished lip. Beckford wrapped the rare wheels in a set of Pirelli P Zeros, a 255 width of front and a 295 in the back for added grip. All of the suspension duties have been taken care of with TEIN Flex coilovers to achieve the right stance and an in-cabin EDFC controller to switch damper settings. With all of the chassis taken care of, attention turned to the powerplant. Beckford had seen
58
the countless forced induction systems options out there, but decided he would go Australian to make some of the most serious jam. He settled on the big power APS twin turbo kit, as it includes absolutely everything to make big, reliable power. Beckford wasn’t settling for a gutless low-end either, so he installed the Brian Crower 4.21L stroker kit. Tyson and Charlie at Diamond Motors in San Dimas, CA did all the grunt work, installing some low compression CP forged pistons into Darton sleeves and a custom stroker crankshaft found its way into the bottom end. The head was ported and polished, then filled with an upgraded Ferrea valvetrain before it was sealed all back up with ARP studs. When the work was done, the car was hauled across the country to tune the HKS FCON VPro. Running pump gas, 93 Octane in New Jersey, the twin turbo mill pumped out a respectable 559whp with 540lb-ft of torque. Not bad… but Beckford isn’t stopping there either and says by the time of publishing they should be nearing 1,000whp on race gas. The triple plate RPS clutch is ready for far more too, since it is custom built for this application. All of the power is channeled though a Cusco 1.5-way LSD to keep the back end in check. Since Beckford actually drives this thing through the mean streets and traffic of NYC,

he decided to include all of the creature comforts. He scooped a set of Sparco Milano recliners and fastened up a harness bar for the Sparco belts. The clunky factory wheel was pulled in favor of a Nardi deep dish suede wheel. The audio system got a shot in the arm thanks to an Alpine LCD flip and navigation unit. The signals are fed to an MTX 4-channel amp and MTX components found inside the car. To drive the bass lines, an MTX mono amp drives a pair of MTX 12-inch Thunder subs mounted into the pair of suede enclosures found on either side of the trunk. Two of the video inputs come from front view and rearview cameras. Now when it comes to celebrity car projects, they usually involve freebie parts and products, annoying PR people with hidden agendas and stars who don’t know jack about the tuner scene. That’s why you won’t find those lame bolt-on features here in our magazine. Take it from us, Mr. Beckford is a legit tuner and very hands on with his rides. He certainly has a lot of toys in his garage and is a true enthusiast who knows, buys and selects his own aftermarket parts. “My accountant told me to finish up this costly project by the end of the year and think about selling it,” Tyson laughs. “After hearing that, I’m not sure how to tell him I went out and bought a new Nissan GT-R which I plan to do some really crazy stuff to… I’m looking to put together a JDM-style R35 that is daily-driven, but cranks around 600whp on pump gas.” From what we have seen in Tyson’s collection, we’re sure the R35 is going to be off the hook. Beckford says it is all going to be rare JDM parts and not like anything else out there. By staying tuned to PAS and www.beckfordonline.com, you’ll be the first to see it in action!

Some of you out there might criticize the fact that we run so many of the Z33 chassis, but what you don’t know is that for every feature that makes it in, there are hundreds of which are shown the door. But when Wes Banasan trailered his 2003 350Z north of the border and we saw it in the flesh at the annual Performance World event, we knew this feature had to happen. Apart from the striking looks of Banasan’s creation, we were pleased to see he didn’t cheap out on anything. There are no knockoff brands or replica parts here, and the craftsmanship is simply top shelf. The car is also far from a trailer queen too, with everything fully intact, Banasan is known to drive it around the streets of his native Dover, DE regularly. He built it to perform but also be practical, to be elegant but also jammed with audio and multimedia gear. It’s the kind of creation that typifies the complete PASMAG formula of ‘total tuning’ and took him years to achieve. The most interesting part of this three-year build was that most of his time wasn’t spent wrenching as much as on sourcing and shipping each rare aftermarket part. Banasan opted for parts from Do Luck, Top Secret, Project Mu, Hasemi motorsports and McIntosh audio stuff that certainly isn’t stocked in Delaware and certainly

doesn’t come cheap. Even some of the custom work on Banasan’s parts had to be sent across the country... like the brushed aluminum interior panels, done in California. At the same time, Banasan was quick to point out he did 60-percent of the work himself in this substantial build-up himself. It shows the kind of passion he has for the tuner scene, as it took two years to source and install the Do Luck aero kit, a year for the Top Secret rear hatch and eight months for the Hasemi hood.

The exterior is definitely a unique blend of parts and highly detailed. Most enthusiasts will notice the car’s paint scheme is inspired by the paint found on the Project Mu brake calipers, but Banasan maintains there is some originality in there too. “I grabbed the paint code, but wanted to make it my own with some secret tweaks,” laughs Banasan. The paint work was performed by East Coast Autobody and eight coats of the special Project Mu-inspired blend were applied to the shell. The look was completed with Craft Square carbon fiber mirrors and a Do Luck rear diffuser. Under the hood, Banasan wanted to get the party started with some forced induction. He wanted to keep it J-spec with one of the pioneering systems, a Power Enterprise twin turbo kit. The criteria was simple, make power but also ensure the car passed strict Delaware emissions standards. Intec Racing in Washington state flew to Jtune Performance in Wilmington, DE and made all of the parts play nicely together... allowing the Z pass any emissions test with flying colors using the UpREV Osiris software. The net result was 400whp on the rollers, conservative yes but that is at only 4psi though! Banasan knows full well there is much more left in the car and is currently building a Brian Crower stroker motor and recently installed an OS Giken triple carbon clutch that will hold 700lb-fts in anticipation of hitting those bigger figures. On the interior, (where Banasan would spend most of his time) the aforementioned brushed aluminum panels were complimented by loads of off-the-shelf and custom carbon fiber including the dashboard. Take one look at the console, and you would notice two analogue meters splashed in a teal back-light. To the untrained eye this may seem like some old school Popular Mechanics hobby kit, but it is some of the finest audio around – McIntosh. “Some people spend $3,000 on a system to make lots of noise,” laughs Banasan. “I dropped $3,000 on only one McIntosh amp to create stunning sound quality!” The source unit is a Clarion VRX-785BT with the optional navigation module. The signals are sent to a McIntosh MCC301M mono amp along with a McIntosh MCC224 4-channel for mids and highs. The subs are a trio of 12-inch
JL Audio units encased in carbon fiber to reduce weight. The balance of the system is rounded out by Dyn Audio 7-inch components speakers with separate 1.1-inch dome tweeters. The system was tuned by Sound of Tri-State for sound quality and the entire interior was Dynamat’ed to ensure sound fidelity. The multimedia portion of the project comes in the form of a 17-inch LCD rising from a motorized tray on the strut bar behind the McIntosh amps. Clean, functional and full of parts that you just don’t see that often makes for a project that we just couldn’t pass on. In terms of the thousands of Zees we’ve seen over the years, this one ranks high. It is a fitting last call to a successful run of the Z33 chassis as we make the transition to featuring many more 370Zs inside PASMAG.

JL AUDIO CP108LG-W3v3 Woofer System Text and Photos by Garry Springgay
verybody knows if you want decent bass in your car, you need a big enclosure and a ton of power, right? Well, the people at JL Audio may disagree. You see, they have decades of experience in putting high performance woofer systems in all kinds of cars and trucks, including those with really tight spaces. To that end, they have developed a series of products called “Ported PowerWedges.” This series of products combine specifically designed vented enclosures with the most appropriate woofer, and produce higher than average performance from very small spaces. These systems are much more than just a small box with a woofer screwed into it. The system we’re looking into this time around is the JL Audio CP108LG-W3v3 which uses a single 8W3v3 woofer, and retail price around $240 (USD).
E
Features The JL Audio CP108LG-W3v3 subwoofer system is very compact, measuring only 18-5/8 inches wide, 11-3/16 inches high and 5-1/8 inches deep. Some amplifiers are bigger! In that tiny package however, is a clever design packed with quality workmanship. Every PowerWedge enclosure is finished and inspected by hand at JL Audio’s Florida-based facility, so you can be sure things are right when it gets put in the carton. The exterior of the enclosure is covered very nicely in black automotive carpet, and thoughtful touches like heavy duty terminals with 5 way binding posts add to the sense of quality. The woofer is securely mounted on the front panel with 8 screws, and comes complete with a removable steel mesh grille. The slot-vent for the system is on the upper edge of the end panel of the enclosure and features a flared end at the output to reduce air turbulence and port noise. By using the high performance JL Audio W3v3 woofer, the system’s power handling is rated at 250 watts. Of course, I had to remove the woofer from the enclosure and check out the construction, 78
and was impressed with what I found. To minimize the mounting depth, the enclosure is constructed of 3/8-inch MDF, but lest you think that’s not thick enough for a good enclosure, I should explain that great care was taken to design and build the enclosure with special internal braces that stiffen and add tremendous strength to the design (see photos). The interior of the enclosure is also lined with polyfill to improve performance and “trick” the woofer into thinking it’s in a larger air volume than it actually is. Polyfill stuffing also helps to reduce sonic colorations and can in some cases improve overall efficiency slightly. The 8W3v3-4 subwoofer utilizes a special mineral-filled polypropylene cone and comes complete with a distinctive JL Audio medallion. A patented design improves the surround to basket junction, and reduces the stress loading of the rubber surround during cone movement, for increased reliability and more consistent output. The 8W3v34 woofer also uses JL Audio’s exclusive voice coil cooling feature, which dissipates heat away from the sub’s internal motor structure, thereby improving long term durability.

JL AUDIO CP108LG-W3v3 Woofer System
“I was immediately impressed with the JL system’s output level as well as the tonal character of the bass. The system sounded clean and well-controlled, without any ringing or boominess sometimes associated with small woofer systems.”
80
Listening Okay, moving on to my listening session, I connected the CP108LG-W3v3 subwoofer system into my reference system and after adjusting the subwoofer level accordingly, I sat down to do some listening. Beginning with Robbie Robertson’s “Somewhere Down the Crazy River” I was immediately impressed with the JL system’s output level as well as the tonal character of the bass. The system sounded clean and well-controlled, without any ringing or boominess sometimes associated with small woofer systems. Switching to Thomas Dolby’s fantastic “The Key to Her Ferrari”, I was again pleased with how well the JL Audio system handled the fast dry bass notes, and articulated the bass runs. Just for giggles, I connected a very good 10-inch 4 ohm woofer in a sealed enclosure and switched between them. The 8-inch PowerWedge system from JL actually had more output than the larger woofer in a much larger enclosure! Focusing once again on listening to the JL system, I played all kinds of music from heavy rap to full orchestral passages, and the little CP108LG-W3v3 subwoofer system never missed a beat. I got on it a few times, just to find the power handling limits, and I have to say that by the time I’d reached them the system was at very high levels.
You don’t need a ton of amplifier power for this system- most enthusiasts would do fine with a 150-200 watt amp. In fact, I enjoyed the sound of the woofer so much that I let it play all day as went to other work in the lab. Tech Specs After I was done listening, which also served to exercise the woofer before I measured the parameters, I let the woofer cool overnight, and then moved it into the lab for measuring. Since the woofer is already in an enclosure, there was no need to measure driver Thiele-Small parameters, and besides, every time I measure a JL woofer, my results are always very close to their already published specifications. Instead, I was curious to learn more about the enclosure, so I measured the interior dimensions, and after subtracting volume for the bracing and the woofer itself, I arrived at a net volume of about 0.35 cubic feet. With such a small air volume to work with, I was curious to see the response of the system at 1 watt of power, and check out an impedance plot of the system so I could find out at what frequency the vent was at resonance. As it turned out, the response plot showed a smooth curve, which is just the way the system sounded, and the impedance curve indicated a vent tuning frequency of around 33Hz.

CADENCE ZRS C9 Text by Garry Springgay // Photos by Manufacturer
lthough we come across a number of amplifiers each year, we still get excited everytime “the guy in the big brown truck” drops off a new product at our test lab. Recently, the good folks at Cadence sent us an example of one of their latest creations, an addition to the popular ZRS series of amplifiers, specifically the new ZRS C9. The popularity of these amplifiers has a lot to do with the amount of performance and features available for the price. We were very eager to see if the new Cadence C9, priced at only $299.00 USD (slightly higher in Canada) would continue the tradition.
A
Features: The Cadence ZRS C9 is a full range Class AB four channel amplifier. Rated at 100 watts x 4 into 4 ohms, and 150 watts x 4 into 2 ohms, the amp I unpacked was relatively large and looked like it meant business. The C9 features a black anodized brushed aluminum heatsink that measures a bit over 15 inches long, 9.6 inches wide, and about 2.3 inches tall. The amp looks good, with beefy heat sink fins, with a laser etched Cadence logo and silk screened model number on the top in red and white. The connections and controls are situated on each end of the amplifier, and the mounting feet are slotted tabs that are part of each sheetmetal end panel. Wiring connections are the ubiquitous hex screw type, albeit these are cast from solid brass and then nickel plated for maximum current transfer. The power connections will accept 4 gauge cables, and the speaker connections will easily handle 10 gauge cable. Also on this end of the amp are a pair of 30A, ATC style fuses. On the opposing end of the amplifier, there are a lot of adjustments! These included gain, filter type, filter slope, crossover frequency, 2ch/4ch input switch, frequency multiplier switches, bass boost and a clever “Bass Focus” control, a subsonic filter that can be used as the highpass section of a bandpass filter, as well as an interesting switch that was labeled “Clone Function”. Thankfully, the amp comes with a good installation guide that explains the proper use and setting of each control. 82
After a bit of reading I understood the purpose of this switch is to allow the settings for channels 3 and 4 to be automatically applied to channels 1 and 2, thereby eliminating the need to set everything manually, and theoretically providing more precise adjustments when all 4 channels are used at the same settings. Also on this end of the amplifier are the input RCA jacks, as well as a pair of full range output jacks that can be used to drive the inputs of another amp, like a dedicated subwoofer amplifier for example. The ZRS C9 also includes a wired remote control that changes the level on channels 3 and 4. Setup and Listening: As usual, the first place the amp got connected was in the quiet and carefully controlled environ-

ment of my listening room. To test this amp I decided to use channels 1 and 2 to drive my component speakers, and channels 3 and 4 would be connected to a pair of 12-inch woofers in a small sealed enclosure. I specifically chose the sealed box so I could experiment with the subsonic filter and the Bass Focus control. During my adjustments, I found I had a tough time reading the red silk screening used for the controls, and while it looks artsy and cool in bright light, it’s going to be hard to read in a dimly lit trunk. I suggest a re-think here. After

Keeping in mind that this amplifier costs less than what a lot of folks spend on a cell phone, I was really pleased with the overall performance of the amplifier and I thought it sounded clean and natural, with plenty of power for all but the most extreme volume levels. The top end was very noise free, and had a sense of airiness and space that I don’t hear in many of the new full range class D designs. My only minor gripe was a slight lack of focus in the stereo image. The bass was tight and articulate, and I was very impressed with the functionality of the Bass Focus control. You see instead of just a simple “Bass Boost” feature, (which is also provided) the Bass Focus control allows you to dial in boost at lower frequencies that can help compensate for a lack of enclosure volume or cone area. The effect is excellent, but like any good thing, too much can be bad. 84
10-360Hz +12dB @ 45Hz +7dB variable freq -66dB @ 5kHz
Thankfully the Cadence engineers understand this too, and limited the amount of available boost to about 7dB. This feature is also useful when combined with the subsonic filter to give your mids a bit of additional punch as well, but again, always use care and caution when applying boost to any speaker system. Tech Bits: After I was done with my listening, I brought the amp into the electronics lab and removed the bottom cover. Inside I found a fairly basic layout using a single sided PCB and thru-hole parts. The build quality was good, especially for an amp of this price range. For those of you that keep score, the power supply uses three high temp 2200µF 25V caps, and the audio section has a total of 13,200µF of capacitance. The power supply switching is handled by six 50N06 MOSFETS, and each channel is driven by a dedicated pair of complimentary bipolar transistors.
On The Bench: Okay, time then to get the performance numbers out of the ZRS C9, and see how she performed on the unerring Cogent test bench. As I suspected from my listening session, the amp is a very good performer for the dollars invested. Power figures were just a hair shy of the published numbers, but in fairness the difference would be completely inaudible to even the most skilled listeners. The ZRS C9 excelled in the signal to noise department, measuring a seldom reached -94dBA at 1 watt. Stereo separation was also very good at better than-65dB. Other high points included measurements showing the C9 has very low output impedance, and the frequency response extended well past human audibility, way out to 80kHz in fact! The overall frequency response was extremely flat, with less than 0.3dB of difference from below 10Hz to 20kHz. This kind of performance is seldom found in a 300 dollar amplifier! It wasn’t all roses and sunshine, however. I found that at certain points in the rotation of the gain controls there was about 1.5dB of difference between left and right channels, which could easily explain the lack of focus I’d previously noted in the stereo image. Yes, it was possible to get them to track almost identically, but that only happened at either end of the pots rotation, places where the gains are not likely to be optimized for most systems. One other niggle, the “Clone Function” seemed to be more of a “distant cousin” function, as it did not achieve the perfect matching of the gain settings I expected. This problem could be related to the tracking problems of the gain pot, and I could get better results matching the gains individually with my multi-metre. Still, the crossovers were very accurately duplicated, which I suppose is what most people will be more worried about. And to be fair, I have to admit I still prefer amps with individual gain pots for each channel because I’m one of the very few people who uses a meter to adjust gains to within 0.1dB. Keep in mind the differences I measured in the ZRS C9 would be only barely audible, but they were there so I had to mention it. After all my usual tests were performed I tested the protection functions by dead shorting the outputs during operation. The circuits worked as intended, I removed the short, cycled the power and all was well again. While I was at it, I also checked for any audible turn-on or off noise, but the ZRS C9 was dead quiet in that regard. Conclusion: The Cadence ZRS C9 is a very good amplifier for the money. In many respects it has better performance and more useful features than many

of its competitors. I especially liked the Bass Focus feature- a useful control in almost any system. The build quality is good, and my abusive tests seem to indicate that the amp should be very reliable. The flexibility of the crossovers and
the inclusion of bandpass capability make this amplifier a joy to do system tuning with. If you’re a fussy listener on a tight budget, you’d do well to check out a ZRS C9 at your local Cadence dealer. It’s a lot of amp for the money.

KONAKI KO-NA3601 Text by Garry Springgay // Photos by Manufacturers
kay, let’s face it, unless you are independently wealthy or raking in big dough through some high paying job, we all have to spend our audio budgets wisely. And this situation is exactly what the folks at Konaki completely understand. For several years they’ve been turning out great quality products at relative bargain prices, with the motto, “Quality does not have to be expensive.” To prove the point, they recently sent us an early sample of their budget oriented, but high performance Class D subwoofer amplifier, the KO-NA3601. Priced at only $199.99 (USD), the amplifier is purported to provide a lot of bang for the buck. Let’s take a look and see if it delivers.
O
FEATURES When I opened the box, I found the Konaki amp shipped inside of a velvet-like drawstring bag, which protects it from dust and scratches during shipping. Pulling the amp out of the bag, I discovered a small heatsink with four thick horizontal fins down each side, and a flat top. The heatsink is finished in gloss black powdercoat, with a diamond cut Konaki badge on the top. Following a currently popular styling cue, the corners of the small heatsink are rounded, and to see just how small it was, I measured it at a diminutive 8.5 x 6 x 2 inches, so the KO-NA3601 is certainly small enough to allow it to be mounted in virtually any available area. The amp is designed to be mounted via 4 traditional slotted mounting tabs that will accept up to a #10 screw. Mounting screws and a wired remote control are included. The amp is a traditional Class D design, and is capable of driving load impedances down to 1 ohm. All of the wiring connections are made on the opposing ends of the amp. One side is occupied with the power, ground, turn-on and speaker connections, as well as a pair of 40A ATC fuses. The opposite end of the amp has a pair of RCA input connectors, a 1/8-inch jack for the wired remote level control, and a pair of LEDs to indicate poweron and protection status. I know what you’re thinking, if that’s it, where are the adjustments? Well, considering that improperly set amplifier controls create the vast majority of sound quality complaints as well as amplifier failures, the creative minds at Konaki decided to mount them on 86
“The performance is terrific for the low price, especially if you are driving it with strong input voltage. If you’re in the market for a budget priced amp with mid-level performance, check this one out at a dealer near you.” the bottom side of the amplifier, where they can’t be easily messed with by every would-be expert who happens to stick his nose in the trunk. Once the controls are adjusted and the amp is bolted down, there are no adjustments possible without un-mounting the amp. Sure, this is a bit unconventional, and I know some will complain about the inconvenience, but in the long run it just may result in a better sounding, more reliable installation. The bottom mounted controls consist of adjustments for input sensitivity (gain), a -12dB/Oct Low Pass filter adjustable from 40-180Hz, and a variable frequency Subsonic filter, which adjusts from below audible frequencies to a high point of 50Hz. Since I had the amp upside down in front of me, it was a perfect opportunity to remove the bottom cover and examine the guts of the amplifier. What I found inside was a well built double sided PCB, using predominately 0% tolerance surface mount parts. The terminals are plenty beefy for an amplifier of this power level, and all the parts were well placed and soldered.
The power supply uses a pair of TO-220 case MOSFETs, as does the output section. Power supply capacitance is handled by three 25V 2200µF high temperature caps, and the output section has a total of 6600µF of capacitance. In the interest of reliability, these are also of the high temperature variety and have a working voltage of 50V. Output filtering on a Class D amplifier is crucial to good performance, and the KO-NA3601 is equipped with a quality inductor and high speed poly caps to remove the switching noise generated by the high efficiency Class D design. LISTENING After replacing the bottom sheetmetal, I connected the amp in my listening room, driving a pair of 4 ohm woofers wired in parallel. I turned the subsonic filter off since I was using a sealed woofer system, and then set the low-pass filter to about 80Hz. After a couple of tweaks to the crossover frequency and increasing the gain settings, I sat down to hear how well this teeny little amp would perform, and

I have to say I came away relatively impressed. The KO-NA3601 had plenty of authority to drive the 12-inch woofers to loud volumes, and sounded fine in the process. The bass was well controlled and deep, quick transients sounded natural without a lot of ringing, and generally speaking the amp sounded just fine indeed. While it’s not going to be mistaken for my 2,000 watt reference amplifier in terms of power, I was very pleased with how well it drove the woofers, even at “enthusiastic” levels, and playing difficult tracks with a ton of dynamics. If I could make one small improvement, it would be to give the amp a bit more gain, as I needed it adjusted nearly wide open to keep up with my main amp. But once set-up, it’s amplifiers like this that can make us re-think the “just how much do I really need” question. I’ll wager this amplifier has more than adequate performance for all but the most demanding listeners.
levels were what I expected after examining the internals, although my precise measurements fell a bit short of the power specs quoted in the owner’s manual. In fairness, however, the amp and manual I received were very early production and may not be a final version. I mention this because more accurate power specifications were provided in the technical data I received with the amp. Due
to this discrepancy, I have left the manufacturers rated power as “TBD” in the specifications below. In any case, the differences only amounted to a bit over one decibel anyway. Other specs like signal-to-noise measured good as well, a testament to the design and layout of the amp. Where amps like this really excel though, is in terms of efficiency, and not just at full power. A really well designed Class D amplifier will be efficient at fractional power levels as well, and the little Konaki did very well in this regard, measuring better than 46% efficient at only 10 watts of power. This is very good, considering most Class AB amplifiers will struggle to hit 15% efficiency at 10 watts. To test the reliability, I deliberately dead shorted the outputs, ran it at very low voltages, ran it to thermal shut off and was generally abusive, and the amp simply protected itself when I got too stupid, and worked perfectly again when the problem was corrected. CONCLUSION Small amps are increasingly popular, and as small as it is, I believe this one will be no different.
MAX FLAT RESPONSE
PERFORMANCE/BENCH MEASUREMENTS After my listening session ended, the amp was transferred to the electronics test bench, and put through our usual series of tests. Here again, when you consider the low price and the very small package size, the amp performed quite well. Power 88

he folks at Zenesis Security Systems have been busy lately, dreaming up all sorts of cool new technology to provide more security and convenience to our lives. To that end, this is the new ZN-302AS security and remote start system. According to Zenesis, the system is designed for “the mature enthusiast who demands function, form and style.”
THE SYSTEM FEATURES 2-WAY COMMUNICATION AND INCLUDES:
The Z-Matic Turbo Timer is a new feature that goes far beyond a simple preset idle-on time. The Z-Matic system was developed hand in hand with turbocharger experts, and actually actively monitors the recent driving conditions, and adjusts the amount of idle time accordingly. A quick trip to the corner store may only need a 15 second turbo idle time, but a hurried drive to work or a high speed freeway run may need several minutes of idle time to cool the turbo properly. With Z-Matic, you always get the right cool down time, no wasted fuel idling needlessly, and no burned

bearings from not enough cooling! There is even an “Extreme” mode, for track days! Variable Voltage Sensing Technology (VVST) is another innovative idea from Zenesis. There are two ways of installing a remote starter, either using Tach Sensing, or Voltage Sensing. Tach sensing is generally the most reliable and preferred method, but takes significantly longer to install. Voltage sensing has worked okay in moderate climate areas, but has problems for people who need remote starting because of extreme climate conditions. The VVST system does not use a pre-set cranking time. Instead, Zenesis VVST uses proprietary algorithms to determine the precise voltage the car needs to start, according to all the variables, including temperature, resulting in clean stable starting each and every time. People familiar with Zenesis probably already know about their Z-Pass Touch system, but for the rest of you, the Z-Pass system allows you to lock and unlock your car, or even arm and disarm the alarm by entering your private code on the touch pad. This can be an incredibly handy feature if you accidentally lock your keys in the car, or if you want to secure your keys in the car while you go shopping or to a club. Remote control battery gone dead? No problem with Z-Pass! Even loaning your car to a friend means they can return it, and lock the keys inside, and you can use Z-Pass to retrieve them at your convenience. It’s an extremely convenient feature of the ZN302AS, and provides the ultimate in peace of mind!

If you’ve seen the movie “Gone In 60 Seconds,” you realize how efficient thieves can be. With today’s technology and a savvy thief, they no longer need to “clone” your remote transmitter; they can add an entirely new one and they don’t even need your transmitter to do it. Once they program your system to respond to their own remote transmitters, they gain access to your car’s contents, including the personal information (like your home address) you keep in the glove compartment. Thieves can come to your home, use their transmitter to disable your alarm, steal your laptop, garage door opener, golf clubs and more. With no signs of forced entry, you’re unlikely to file a police report and thieves can repeat the crime again and again. If you have the Excalibur AL-1920-EDP, however, the patented Unauthorized Transmitter Alert will sound an audible alert each time you turn on the ignition for the next 48 hours, when transmitters are added or deleted from your system. For additional safety, an LED light will blink equal to the number of transmitters programmed to work your system. If an
unauthorized change has been made, you can delete it, preventing unknown persons from gaining access to your vehicle. The AL-1920EDP is truly a state-of-the-art vehicle security platform offering comprehensive vehicle protection and convenience. Check it out at a dealer near you.

lthough Auto Page introduced the first of their new “Heavy Metal” series remote starters last year, the recently released C3-RS1100 we previewed is intended to be their all-new flagship for 2010. For those who thought the term Heavy Metal only referred to Metallica fans and head-banging rockers, think again. At Auto Page, Heavy Metal refers to their latest remote start and security system series featuring remote controls made with a real high-tech chrome metal finish (hence the heavy metal name). The moment I picked up the remote control, I got it. It’s heavier than others I’ve held recently, as most aftermarket remotes are typically made of light plastic. The Auto Page C3-RS1100 also features a very nifty looking OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) the company claims adds 50% more viewing area with full motion animation. Auto Page also claims the range of the new OLED remote is up to one mile! Imagine leaving a football game when it’s really cold and you start your car long before you get to it. You not only start your car but also locate it among a sea of other cars when you lights start flashing, creating a dialogue with your car. The advanced OLED remote created screen shots and animated graphics offer fun custom options. You can actually match the vehicle display type and the colour to your vehicle and the graphics are entertaining to watch. For example, when the system is armed, a protective cage graphic is pictured over the selected vehicle image. Auto Page has packed a lot of great design features and technology into the new C3-RS1100 (think of it as the exotic super car of the Auto Page line). The C3-RS1100 also allows the C3 interface to be connected with most smart phones, GSM phones and GPRS phones allowing full compatibility with almost all cellular style phones on the market today via a Java Script app, a WAP app, or even through your Safari/Explorer internet browser. Project R32 Garrett Twins Find a New Home Text by Dave Pankew // Photos by www.federalrace.com
The new Garretts GT2860s flow 320hp each!
t’s been a long time in the works but we finally found the time to wrench on Project R32. With a busy travel and track day schedule, there never seemed to be an ideal time to start the surgery on our RBpowered project. After a late summer visit to Mosport though, one of the turbos (the infamous rear turbine) decided to call it quits. With no boost on tap, the GT-R was castrated and didn’t have the jam to keep up with a Camry considering it was now essentially a low-compression NA 2.6L! Luck was on our side because when we tore down the turbo setup at Federal Race in Mississauga, ON we were actually excited about the damage we saw. Shop owner Manny Sehmbi discovered the turbine shaft had sheared clean off and the wheel flew out the exhaust instead of shattering because it wasn’t in the housing anymore. It was the difference between a turbo upgrade and a whole motor replacement! We turned to the right partners to assist with the turbo upgrade and our first instinct was to acquire a turn-key pair of Garrett GT ball-bearing twins. We spoke with Kyle Snyder over at Garrett and he
I

maintained that the highest horsepower with minimal lag combination was the venerable GT2860R turbo. The “dash5” version is a direct bolt on for the RB26DETT with its T25 flange, and air flow up to 320hp…each! The ball bearing center cartridge meant the boost would come on quick and pull all the way to the redline. We opted for the .42A/R combination which would yield the response GT-Rs are known for... rocketing out of the apex nice and early. The only change in plans was for the supplied Garrett actuators to be pulled in favor of adjustable HKS racing actuators we had in stock to handle more boost. The stock exhaust manifolds on the RB26 are heavy and restrictive. Sure they will never crack and can be port-matched to flow better but seriously, they were rusty relics of a bygone era. We contacted Riki Endo at Tomei USA to ship out a pair of the absolutely stunning eXpreme stainless steel manifolds for the RB26. The two-piece design is made from SS304 stainless, which will outflow and
The stock turbos were tired and the rear turbo exhaust wheel finally snapped clean off (as seen on right).
resist cracking far beyond any of that junk you can buy online from brand X. The construction and welds are second to none and we decided to add a set of Tomei dump-pipes as well. Most people skip the dump-pipe upgrade (go figure, a pair of elbows for $500) or go cheap and end up regretting it because it will be the difference between above 500whp and below 500whp. Tomei supplied their latest design of dump-pipes that are completely cast, then ported and polished as opposed to welded flanges. While we agree Tomei has some of the prettiest welds around, this new design is progressive and more than one step ahead of counterfeiters.

Project R32
The GT-R laid down 516whp running pump gas on the Legendary Motorcar dyno. Since the ancient ignition coils were breaking up above 6,000rpm, it was unsafe to go higher until they were upgraded, so Federal detuned it to 473whp.” Our GT-R’s fueling was also a concern in a high horsepower build like this. All the right parts are there to make power but without enough fuel, there will be problems. You will melt a piston if you cram more air in your combustion chamber because the resulting temperatures of the intense explosions cause detonation. Turbo cars are at their fastest just before they blow up – remember that. We turned to Tomei again for one of their heavy duty 300lph fuel pumps and a sexy billet rail with the larger 11mm bores to accommodate injectors other than Nismo and JECS, which are both 10.5mm. We decided on RC Engineering 750cc injectors, a top-feed, low-impedance type that would drop right in. The RC injectors shipped flow-tested and labeled for identification allowing us to put the fattest one in the No.6 cylinder at the back of the motor and scale down from there. The intake manifold on the RB26 causes a leaner condition at the back of the motor as the charge air slams into the last cylinder. There is currently only one aftermarket intake manifold that addresses this, Nismo but they cost $1,500 with no chance of a hook-up! Next up, we needed to convert the intake to speed density, and options were scarce. Federal decided they would take matters into their own hands and took the twin 3-inch K&N carbon fiber cone filters we had and got to welding. They fastened the 102
cone filters to a pair of perfectly fabricated intakes connected with Vibrant 4-ply silicone couplers and Vibrant T-clamps. The end result was tailored fit in the engine bay which looks much cleaner without MAFS and awkward snorkels. After the intake was customized to perfection, we installed our supplied AEM intake air sensor (IAT after the intercooler and the AEM 3.5bar MAP sensor to the firewall). These new sensors would relay the temperature and air pressure data to the ECU. As a rule you want to select a MAP with 0.1 to every psi of boost. Would we run 35psi? Well, not yet but you never know! Next, we installed the AEM EMS standalone that our boy Greg Nakano from AEM supplied. Nakano had been hounding us about when this project was going to deliver. Well, this one is for you Greg because the GT-R makes more power on three cylinders and one turbo than your whole car! The AEM EMS he supplied also came with the onboard wideband O2 sensor to read AFRs and an optional boost control solenoid to regulate the boost pressure. The wiring of any AEM is a snap with a simple plug’n’play operation with only a couple more wires to tap in for the O2 sensor. The mechanical work itself had taken only a week. The turbos were now primed and everything was torqued to exacting specifications, so it was time to get the GT-R on the rollers and see what it would lay down. As with any
AEM EMS standalone, they are provided with base maps to get your car up and running right away. You won’t be making the maximum power and there is still plenty of tuning and setup to complete but at least it can be moved around. We hit up Legendary Motorcar of Milton, ON; a world famous restoration facility with a Dynojet dyno.

They are also the home of Dream Car Garage on the Speed Network and builders of the 208MPH Super Cuda with a twin-turbo Viper V10! The GT-R was definitely humbled by the Plymouth beast it shared the dyno with that day, but our mission was to make the GT-R fast on a track, not only a straight line.
More gear from Tomei USA was ordered. The new Tomei Type-L fuel pressure regulator, billet rail, 300lph fuel pump and they also deal Nismo parts too.

TechTalk With a goal of instant-on power, Federal tuner Ryan Gonsales began tweaking the maps and the boost to play nice with pump gas. The highest octane pump gas around these parts is 94 (RON+MON), which by Japanese standards would be around 98. We are also working on adding additional maps for our fuel partners, VP Racing fuels which offer a number of blends but decided C16 (117 octane) would reach our horsepower goals. Federal’s style of tuning is progressive as they want each sub-system of the engine to be perfect, so they raise the boost and advanced the timing gradually. They wanted to ensure adequate fuel, lubrication and cooling would be present for the engine. As the tuning went late into the night, both the Federal crew and Legendary Motorcar were eager to see how much power the Garrett setup would produce on a motor that we knew zero about since the car was imported from Japan. At 24psi, the car was able to put down a respectable 516whp and our desire to push harder was cut short. The 20 year old ignition coils decided they did not want to be forced any further and began breaking up. Since the ignition issue would be harmful to the motor, the team scaled the boost and fuel back to a daily-drivable 473whp.

Armed with new coil packs, the next stage will see a couple added tweaks to unlock the extra ponies in the car. With an AEM water-methanol injection kit and some VP C16 in the works, the GT-R is on track to touch 600whp. Since the old setup was only 360whp and put the hurt on almost the entire field at our Mosport day last year, we expect the GT-R to be difficult to overtake in 2010.

ost people don’t know that the easiest horsepower gains to get from your motor are actually hiding in there just waiting to be unlocked. Many engines are tuned from the factory to maximize efficiency and reduce warranty claims at the expense of more power. New car buyers want driveability and decent gas mileage, but for performance-oriented drivers, they know there is a lot of power left on the table. How much power? Well, depends on the car, but in our experience we have seen 20whp extracted from a Nissan 350Z with an exhaust and as much as 44whp in a twin turbo Skyline! Haltech knows how to tune engines of all variations. The Australian-based company has been producing engine management systems since the 1980’s after a successful prototype for a magazine project car. Haltech produced the World’s first ECU that could be tuned on-the-fly while the motor was running. If you ask around, some tuners swear by Haltech and cars equipped with their technology have been competing in motorsports the world over. After enjoying a high degree of success with their E6K standalone computer at the beginning of the decade, Haltech USA fell in to an uncertain future soon thereafter. After a brief hiatus, they are back in a big way with the award-winning Platinum Pro ECU. Entered as a new product in the Performance Product section at SEMA, the Haltech Pro Plug-in for Skyline R32/R33 vehicles equipped with an RB26DETT motor won the coveted ‘Global Media Award’ amongst some very fierce competition. And it is for good reason, since this ECU is a Plug ’n’ Play experience for a powerplant that is very popular in the original car or swapped into a new chassis. Haltech’s ECU lineup currently consists of three ECU ranges, from the basic entry level Sprint 500 and Sprint RE ECU’s, the workhorse Sport series, to premium level Platinum Pro series; Haltech has your EFI needs covered. With up to fourteen channels capable of controlling injection and ignition duties, the Haltech Platinum Pro ECU lineup can handle engines up to twelve cylinders including 2, 3, and even 4 rotor engines! These units are capable of controlling sequential injectors setup
M

on 4, 6 and 8 cylinders, and semi-sequential injection on 10 and 12 cylinders. When it comes to ignitions, whether it is distributor, coil-on-plug or aftermarket CDI systems, the Platinum Sport has the technology to control them. From naturally aspirated motors to fierce turbo and supercharge setups, the Platinum Pro is ready to tune for maximum gains.
Packed with features, the Haltech Platinum Pro has all of the technology tuners need. The unit includes: • • • • • • • • • • • •
VE fuel mapping Dual mapping, for “on the fly” map switching Soft cut rev limiter & 2 Step aux rev-limiter Closed loop gear dependent boost control Stepper motor or BAC valve control and closed loop idle control User-definable mapping points 32x32 map resolution Anti-lag launch control Wideband closed loop 02 control Sensor calibration capability 5 additional user-definable inputs with 4 outputs Onboard & PC datalogging Advanced engine protection
Another high point of the Haltech Platinum Pro is the ease of installation and use. After sensors are installed, simply unplug the harness from your old ECU and it slips directly into the Haltech. Load the windows-based software on any laptop and the ECU is accessed easily through a convenient USB port. Gone are the days and annoying serial connectors, which are non-existent on most modern laptops. Stay tuned as we are currently tuning a Haltech Platinum Pro R32/33 ECU to tune a Skyline GT-R gunning for over 1,000whp in an upcoming tech article! With over $20,000 in the motor alone, the Haltech has the control to push this car beyond all challengers at the dragstrip and on the road course.

f you were to poll enthusiasts today, the majority will tell you that manual transmissions are the way to go. They offer the most controlled driving and, depending on the application, are quicker and put more power down than your average slush-box automatic. However, during the past decade a number of advanced transmissions have been brought to market with great success. Some high performance cars, such as the Lexus IS-F and Nissan GT-R don’t even offer a manual transmission options. Then again, the 20 millisecond shifts will eclipse the response by even the most seasoned professional. So, with all kinds of new transmission technology available like sequentials, DSGs and the new PDK, the aftermarket has responded with products to upgrade and maintain them. ENEOS, one of the leading Japanese manufacturers of oil and lubricants, makes a line of products that are widely available in the US and Canada. The parent
108
company Nippon Oil has been innovating in the oil and lubricants sector for many years and have released a new product, which will be welcome news for automatic transmission owners. ENEOS has released a high performance synthetic automatic transmission fluid that can deal with the wear and tear facing today’s transmissions. The ENEOS ECO-ATF meets all Japanese automatic transmission standards including Toyota WS and Nissan Matic S (excluding CVT transmissions). Described as an ultra-low viscosity, ECO-ATF boasts a noticeable fuel economy gain. During company testing, it yielded a 2-percent fuel saving with the reduced energy loss. The ECO-ATF prevents oil from churning in the torque converted and offers more drag resistance in shifting without compromising fatigue or antiwear performance. The other collateral gains are less noise-associated with the operation of automatic transmissions and the blend is not harmful to any of the components inside such as rubber
or nylon. The ENEOS ECO-ATF contains Premium base stocks for a low-molecular weight and this base oil provides improved oxidative and thermal stability. The additive chemistry provides a high resistance to mechanical shear and fatigue over time as well. ENEOS ECO-ATF is also compatible with other automatic transmission fluids Dexron III, Mercon, SP-III, ZF1, Matic J, Matic S, T-IV, WS. Combined with improved fuel economy, the new ECO-Friendly ENEOS bottles use 30 per cent less plastic compared to the old container. If you have an automatic transmission in a performance car and want improved performance with faster shifts and less drag, ENEOS ECO-ATF is a product you need.

sk the average person what kind of motor oil is in their car and they will tell you that it is the “slippery” kind. They will likely not be able to tell you what brand of motor oil is in there let alone what weight they use. That trend is changing however, as newer cars have more advanced motors with tighter tolerances that are expensive to replace. Over the last decade, synthetic lubricants have gained popularity among enthusiasts as demand has gone up, while prices have come down. Those that prefer to drive their car hard both on and off the track demand the most from their motor oil and are committed to performance and protection no matter the cost. What used to be in limited supply is 0W (zero weight) synthetic oil, which has now become more mainstream. It isn’t uncommon to find these super slick products at the national chains, making them far more accessible to the general public. AMSOIL isn’t new to synthetic lubricants and their commitment to racing weights remains strong. It produced the first API-qualified synthetic motor oil dating back to 1972, and the variety of weights, additives and numerous quantities (up to 55 gallon drums) it makes is impressive. The Signature Series is the evolution of all of the research and development that AMSOIL has accumulated. The packaging bears the company founder’s signature, A.J. Amatuzio an ex-fighter pilot who brought aerospace grade engineering to everyday cars. The high performance of this blend means it will outperform when it comes to wear, viscosity, oil life, fuel economy and efficiency. AMSOIL has integrated their “extended drain” technology into this product meaning longer intervals are required between changing oil. The special additives resist oxidation and neutralize the acids that shorten the service life of motor oils and the result is reduced maintenance costs. The Signature Series is a replacement for 0W-30, 5W30 and 10W-30 motor oils and outperforms various competing synthetic motor oils in tests such as the four ball bearing test (ASTM D-4172). The zero weight oils are designed to perform. In high performance, high compression engines or those fitted with turbos and superchargers, the Signature Series is ready to unlock some horsepower. The extremely lightweight oil allows for less friction

Drag robs engines of power, but the 0W oils allow for a free-revving engine experience whether you are at high RPM or need to lubricate a turbo screaming at 120,000 RPM or both.
Beyond a modified engine, the Signature Series meets or exceeds API standards and the manufactures themselves: • • • • •

Essentially enthusiasts had a rare chance to view two great shows at once. According to East Coast Import Show Off Extravaganza event organizer Manny Rivera, “The New England Auto Show is considered one of the fastest growing industry shows in the country, which made Boston the perfect audience for launching the new East Coast Import Show Off Extravaganza… They brought us onboard to organize and add a fresh and exciting element to their annual event.” The East Coast Show Off hosted an array of hot cars from import tuners to luxury SUVs, including a few of vehicles recently debuted at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. An amazing 3,500 square foot display area from Afterfx (from nearby New Hampshire) and Kustom Kreations (based in Marlboro, Massachusetts) gave auto show attendees a glimpse of the best in aftermarket and custom creations. The event also showcased over twenty custom-built motorcycles from Breaklites of Peabody, Massachusetts alongside a lengthy list of car clubs including Simply 2 Impress, High Intensity, Team ECR, and Game Over. Local vendors Luxury Details, Mad Ink, Gator Glass, Paws21 and In His Image air brushing showed their support and offered great deals for consumers. “We expect to do more in the line of import tuner car shows, with our first show in September of 2010. So be on the lookout for this event… Auto show fans really seemed to love the flash of the East Coast Show Off exhibition area, which proved to be a hit with many enthusiasts and media covering the auto show,” says Rivera.
