TO WIN COMPETITION BRED 16 WAY REBOUND AND COMPRESSION ADJUSTABILITY The HSD HR coilover is exactly what the performance tuning scene has been crying out for. The HR series coilovers offer the most features and the best quality for under $1350. HSD Coilovers use a Monotube damper design favoured by high end suspension companies and each kit is TUV approved. This level of quality and performance is usually found on much more expensive suspension products.
HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS
Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twintube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.
HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
A very wide range of height adjustment is possible without affecting the spring pre-load or the damper stroke length. So whether you want sporty or totally slammed, you still get the full performance of the damper.
FULLY ADJUSTABLE DAMPING
Our 16 Stage damping adjustment allows quick, easy and accurate control of the damping so you can tune it to suit your style and setup. Set to soft for your daily drive, then quickly switch to hard for track days or competition use.
PILLOW BALL TOP MOUNTS
Our coilovers come with Anodised Aluminium top mounts with integrated heavy duty noise-free pillowball bearings all round. A wide range of camber adjustment is included on front strut models.

V to the I to the P BY JOHN LIWANAG (FOUNDER / CO-ADMIN OF VIPSTYLECARS.COM)
I have been asked several times over the years, “What makes a car a VIP CAR?” That’s when I reply, “It all depends on what part of the world we are standing in.” It’s very simple and something we tend not to make overly complicated, pronouncing it “vip” or “bippu,” not “vee-eye-pee.” In essence, saying it as one word and not spelling out each letter. It all starts with the platform though. Fortunately, in Japan where this trend originated they are blessed with a large variety of luxury sedans from its domestic automakers. A VIP Car starts with that foundation, the car itself. Nissan brings a fleet of sedans to the VIP party: the President, Cima, Gloria, Cedric and the Q45. Toyotas fleet includes the Century, Celsior, Aristo, Crown and Majesta. Take one of these platforms and begin the modifications of your choice. Let’s start with the suspension. Air suspensions are extremely popular for the fact you can drive as low as you want and provide the clearance when needed. Coil-overs can also be used. The main thing is to bring the car down as low as possible. Next, we add low offset wheels. The rim is pretty much kissing the fender, or barely clearing it, when tucking into them. From there a body kit as installed, making the car seem even more massive than it already is and even closer to the ground. These are the building blocks of a modified VIP Car. Here is where a VIP Style Car comes in. You would take these same types of modifications and put them on cars that are not considered a VIP Car platform. A very popular trend is to use a van (Honda Odyssey, Toyota Previa and Sienna and the Nissan High-Ace),
22
box (Scion xB and Nissan Cube) and other sedans (Infiniti G35s, Lexus IS300s, Nissan Maximas and Honda Accords). Outfit any of these cars with the same styling cues and/or vendors that a VIP Car would use, and that is what I like to define as a VIP Style Car. In North America, we aren’t as fortunate to have the large selection of true VIP Car platforms that other countries do. Though the trend is still in the infancy stages here, some U.S.-based companies have tried to sell European sedan offerings as VIP Cars. But, while those can belong in the VIP Car category, there is a large sense of pride within the Japanese modding community in its own luxury sedans. That said, within the past couple of years, we are starting to see a lot of the usual VIP Car suspects beginning to add their touches to the Mercedes S-Class, Rolls-Royce Phantom and other Euro luxury sedans. We tend to adapt styling cues seen in Japanese VIP Cars to the
platforms we have available to us. It isn’t our choice that we don’t have a Toyota Century or a Nissan President here. And, there is nothing wrong with starting on a Honda Accord or a Toyota Avalon as long as you can distinguish that a VIP Car starts at the foundation of the car itself. VIP Style Cars simply take the styling cues of a modified VIP Car and adapts them to a non-traditional platform. A great example of this is Performance Auto and Sound’s own Honda Accord; it takes many VIP Car mods and then applies them to the Accord to achieve that all-important VIP Style. Several U.S. companies like VIP Modular Wheels and VIP’d Out tables provided custom-built parts just for the project. I hope you enjoy this VIP-themed issue. Here you’ll be able to see many different genres of VIP.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH STARTING ON A HONDA ACCORD OR A TOYOTA AVALON AS LONG AS YOU CAN DISTINGUISH THAT A VIP CAR STARTS AT THE FOUNDATION OF THE CAR ITSELF.”

When Lexus released the LS430, it was designed to be a comfortable family mover. After seeing some of the aftermarket options for it, Samson Mak knew the car could be transformed to the perfect tuner. The owner of a car audio shop in Hawaii, Mak knew that audio would be an integral part of his build. Additionally, he went out of his way to ensure the factory options would remain fully operational as they came from Lexus, something that is often overlooked by many tuners. To the untrained eye, you could make the mistake that Mak’s car rolled out of the dealership fully optioned out.

taKing inSPiration from the jaPaneSe viP Scene, maK uSed Some aFtermarKet Parts to simPly accentuate the Body lines, not reshaPe them.”
O
utside, the car was mildly upgraded. Taking inspiration from the Japanese VIP scene, Mak used some aftermarket parts to simply accentuate the body lines, not reshape them. On the bumpers, a Silk Blaze front lip matches up to OEM Toyota Celsior (the Japanese version of the Lexus LS) side skirts and rear lip. OE JDM Toyota Celsior headlights and a front grille replace the Lexus units, while optional JDM Celsior fog lights fill the bumper openings. Trunk and roof spoilers from Admiration Japan give the car a more aggressive look, while Artisan Spirit fenders provide
a touch of custom without being too gaudy. Custom blinker mirrors are crafted from an OEM Toyota Tacoma mirror, and Valenti puddle lights greet the driver and passenger upon entering and leaving the car. Otherwise, the exterior of the car was kept simple. The most aggressive appearance modification was actually made via the suspension. Mak teamed up with Air Runner suspension to utilize its ‘On the Ground’ setup and keep the car as low as possible. Nagisa Auto suspension arms keep all the alignment settings in check at any height, while Toms Japan braces help keep the chassis stiff.

Stopping power is provided by a set of eight-piston Brembo GT calipers in the front that grip 380 mm rotors. In the rear, four-piston Brembo GT calipers grip on 345 mm rotors. A Dakota Digital air pressure gauge monitors each corner of the air suspension system, which can be adjusted via the AccuAir e-Level controller mounted in the center console, or an iPhone with WiFi for complete control inside or outside the car. With the upgrades, the car rides like luxury but can stop on a dime, keeping driver and passengers safe and comfy. Under the hood, the 4.3-liter 3UZ-FE V8 motor features only light modifications to help the motor breathe efficiently. A Tom’s Japan air filter replaces the stock unit while a Tanabe Medallion exhaust provides better flow. Voltage is regulated by an A’PEXi grounding kit while a Blitz throttle controller helps improve response. The engine bay also received carbon covers to update the look a bit, but was kept simple. Inside the car, passengers are treated to a full-wealth of luxury. Optional lace Toyota Celsior seat trimmings and leather/suede seats are just the beginning. Rear passengers can enjoy reclining and massaging units built right into the seat. For the driver, controls are handled with a Silk Blaze gun grip steering wheel and shift knob.

Bluetooth, steering wheel controls and rear audio controls are completely integrated into the system, allowing for seamless integration that is rarely seen at the tuner level.”
When turned on, the Alpine INA-W910 head unit takes over entertainment and the factory Mark Levinson unit, treating rear passengers to a pair of Alpine TME-M780 head rest TVs. Along with controlling the suspension, the integrated iPhone mount in the centre console can also play through the INA-W910. When turned off, the OEM head unit takes over entertainment throughout the car. Bluetooth, steering wheel controls and rear audio controls are completely integrated into the system, allowing for seamless integration that is rarely seen at the tuner level. Taking a look in the trunk, BeatSonic Musee amps and subs provide the low-end punch while Alpine Type-X components provide the higher tones. All trunk components are expertly-installed with the help of Rich and Aaron from Car Tunes Kailua while all panels in the trunk are custom airbrushed to look like marble. Turning the Alpine INA-W910 off also puts the trunk system on standby and returns audio back to the OEM system entirely. Along with fully-polished air suspension components, the trunk feels elegant and plush, yet still retains over 90% of the storage capacity as designed by Lexus. Overall, Mak’s attention to detail gives the car a look and feel of a top-end luxury car without sacrificing the luxurious features associated with the Lexus brand. Yet when out on the town, the car commands attention due to its low stance, aggressive wheel fitment and refined audio system. If I was President, I might hire Mak to build a fleet of cars with his heightened level of style, audio and class.

he Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG is designed like a fine watch, an elegant and stylish accessory to the quietly confident, successful businessperson; refined precision wrapped in subtle extravagance. The Lamborghini Aventador is designed to be like a massive five pound diamond chain, a flashy beacon of wealth and success to the extravagant cartel boss; brute power and aggression wrapped in a superhero costume. Jamie Liu’s Mercedes SL55 AMG sits somewhere in the middle, like a well-dressed assassin or a supermodel with a machine gun. Liu’s SL55 AMG has the whole package; elegant yet aggressive styling, brute power and enough technology to make even the best international spy turn green with envy.

This story starts with an attractive, young jewelry designer and her passion for fine automobiles. With a history ranging from a Honda Civic race car to a McLaren F1, Liu’s tastes have always revolved around performance and her SL55 AMG has its fair share of it. Under the hood lies a 5.4L supercharged Mercedes V8 that is tweaked and tuned by Benzworks. The valvetrain is beefed up along with a Benzworks head port and polish while 550 cc fuel injectors deliver more fuel to the combustion chambers. Air enters the engine through a custom Benzworks intake and throttle body before being compressed by the factory AMG supercharger and forced into the engine. A custom dual pump system and larger tanks help beef up the air-towater front-mount intercooler system. To make things even crazier, an AEM water/methanol injection system is paired with a Ny-Trex 150shot nitrous system. The fumes travel through custom Benzworks long-tube headers and exhaust system. The result is 700 hp and 750 lb-ft of tire shredding, fear-evoking power. Liu didn’t stop with the power mods. She went even crazier with the exterior of her already sleek roadster. Enter Misha Carbon, creators of this stunning wide body kit. Misha attached the race-car-quality carbon fiber body kit, which replaces both bumpers, hood and front fenders, while adding a rear deck lid spoiler, air diffuser and wide rear fender flares.
Liu also paid a great deal of attention to the interior — or command center — of her SL55 AMG.”

Promax Motorsports HID headlights and fog lights add more accents to the exterior. With wider body panels comes wider wheels, and Liu turned to DPE for the task. A set of 20-inch DPE concave series CS16 wheels take the exterior appearance to another level — 10 inches wide in the front and 12.5 inches wide out back. Equally massive Pirelli P-Zero tires give Liu confidence in the form of traction when she unleashes all 700 horses, while a Benzworks modified OEM air suspension system gives this SL55 the perfect stance. A matte silver vinyl wrap finishes off the look from the outside, but perhaps you’ve seen this car in one of its many other colors. In the past few years it has been wrapped in no less than six different colors, keeping people guessing and keeping her installer, Impressive Wrap, very busy. Leaving no stone unturned, Liu has also paid a great deal of attention to the interior — or command center — of her SL55 AMG. To put it bluntly, this cockpit is packed with technology. The ultra-comfortable factory AMG seats are retained, but are reupholstered with black
34
leather, suede inlays and red diamond-pattern double stitching, much like you would find inside a Lamborghini Gallardo. The stitching and suede accents continue to the door panel inserts and floor mats as well. Behind the seats, you will find a massive custom sub box housing two 10-inch JL Audio subwoofers. Hidden inside the box is a motorized storage cubby for your unmentionables, sitting underneath an LED-backlit AMG logo and Mercedes-Benz Silver Star emblem. JL Audio component speakers and amps fill the remainder of the interior while an Alpine DVD head unit controls the symphony of sound to create a well-rounded, top-notch stereo system. Helping make the SL55 feel like a mobile command center, Liu’s iPhone and iPad sit in custom billet aluminum mounts, while a custom A-pillar gauge pod houses some AEM boost and methanol flow gauges. Liu has created a monster — a monster in a custom-tailored suit — ready to attend any black tie affair with its perfect blend of speed, style and elegance. I offer that it is perhaps the best daily driver ever built.

ChangeS for
Formula D’s 10th season

Story & Photography by Jacob Leveton
s Formula D enters its 10th season of competition, there have been a number of off-season changes. From new championships to changes in sponsorship, keeping up with the shuffling has been hectic to say the least. PASMAG is proud to be a major media partner for the 10th consecutive year in 2013, and you can expect more of the best coverage of North America’s biggest professional drifting series throughout this season. Let’s take a look at 10 new changes in Formula D’s decennial year.
GoPro Rises to Presenting Sponsor GoPro has been a partner with FD for several years, but is now officially the presenting sponsor. GoPro signage will be visible on all cars and marketing material, and unique video content will be provided for every event. Additionally, GoPro cameras will be used exclusively on all cars.
02 New Tra ck
Previously, each driver used their best score of two runs to rank into the top 32. This season, the top 16 scores after the first qualifying pass will count for the top half of the bracket (positions one thru 16), while the second qualifying pass for the remaining drivers will determine positions 17 through 32. No driver taking a second qualifying pass will earn a tandem ranking higher than 17th, and only the best score will stand. Additionally, drivers will make passes based on their championship position, with the championship leader making the first pass each round.
Texas Motor Speedway
Formula D visited Texas in 2004 and 2005, but this year’s event at Texas Motor Speedway (just outside of Dallas) marks the first time the series will drift competitively on a track in the Lone Star state. Texas replaces Las Vegas on the calendar as the sixth stop between Seattle and the Irwindale finale on Sept. 14. 36

Car Manufacturer Championship
At each round, the top two drivers for each vehicle manufacturer will earn points towards that manufacturer. The drivers don’t need to be predetermined, nor do they need to remain the same from round to round. For the purpose of the competition, cars are allowed engine swaps from the same manufacturer only. A Scion car with a swapped Toyota motor is allowed, however, a Nissan with a swapped Chevy motor is not.

Tire Manufacturer Championship
Rhys Millen is Out
Logo Achilles Radial on light background
Long-time FD competitor Rhys Millen will not compete in 2013. With Hyundai motorsports pulling back its sponsorship, Millen was unable to find enough funding to continue his program. Millen leaves with a series championship in 2005, seven event wins and 12 podium finishes. We wish nothing but the best to Millen in his future motorsport endeavors.
This season, the top two drivers on each tire manufacturer will earn points towards this cup. Drivers earning these points do not need to be predetermined, nor do they need to be the same for each round. With eight tire manufacturers set to compete at each round, this competition will be as tightly contested as the drivers championship! Logo Achilles Radial on dark background

New Title Sponsors Each year, several sponsorship changes occur behind the scenes. For 2013, four drivers stand out as having the most significant changes. Pat Mordaunt signed Diamond Lighting Solutions to the title spot on his Lexus SC430, Matt Powers will drive with Fatlace as his title sponsor, Odi will have Nexen as his title sponsor, and Vaughn Gittin Jr. is now driving under the Nitto Tire banner alongside returning sponsors Monster Energy Drink and Ford.

Several drivers are returning to the series this year after taking some time off. Dean Kearney is back behind the wheel of a Viper (although this car is a different chassis than Sam Hubinette’s 2011 car). Carl Rydquist is piloting a 350Z that was previously campaigned by Robbie Nishida in 2009, and Forrest Wang is in a freshly-built S14 chassis. All three drivers are running their own programs after previously driving for other team owners.

Our May 2013 issue covered five new cars on the grid in various states of their builds (Mike Essa — BMW E46, Toshiki Yoshioka — Subaru BRZ, Conrad Grunewald — Chevy Camaro, Andy Hateley — BMW E30 and Otto Graven — Scion FR-S). We arrived in Long Beach to find several additional cars too. Dennis Mertzanis teamed up with ARK Performance to build a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Ryan Tuerck debuted a Scion FR-S powered by a 2JZ motor, Chelsea Denofa piloted a four-door E46 chassis and Tony Angelo brought his 2AR-powered Scion FR-S to the competition. All four of these drivers also made it into the top 32.

Camo green hides the famous history of this S15 I’ve owned many Skylines and other JDM cars, but never have I received the attention this car brings. It’s like driving a dream come true.”
A
lthough you might not recognize it right away, this cool-looking Army Green Silvia S15 is famous. In fact, we bet you’ve seen it before. Most people we know are at least a little familiar with the ongoing movie franchise “Fast and the Furious,” and even if it wasn’t everyone’s favorite choice, the “Tokyo Drift” installment did have its enjoyable moments... Unless you were a Silvia... Specifically, this Silvia. This was Han Seul-Oh’s Silvia — the blue and orange one — which the hapless non-drifting hero, Sean Boswell (played by Lucas Black), thoroughly trashed in the parking lot race scene. Only it wasn’t thrashed, thanks to the minor miracle of special effects. Instead, it’s gone on living, changing hands a couple times to slowly become the wide body monster you see today. Our story picks up after the movie ends. Universal Studios imported the car to the States for filming, then sold it to Flawless Rides in California in mid-2006. They installed the eight-piece C-West body kit and refinished the

car in a custom paint color. Other pieces such as the Origin carbon fiber GT wing, C-West eyelids and carbon fiber canards and APR race mirrors made their way onto the car too. This is where Billy Vaughn stepped in. He saw the S15 in the movie and simply “had to own it.” He traced the car to Flawless Rides and made them an offer they could not refuse. For a few years the work progressed, but much slower than he wanted. We all know the story. Life happens and the demands of family and work combine to bring our projects to a crawl. Finding the right shop can also be a problem when dealing with a chassis which was never available in the U.S. It wasn’t until January, 2011 that it all kicked into high gear again. Vaughn felt the need to add power, so he collaborated with Intense Power. Han Wong and his crew built a one-off Powerlab exhaust manifold to hold a Garrett twin-scroll GT3076 turbo and twin TiAL MVS wastegates. They also shaved the engine bay, moving the wires, fuse panel, battery and the brake lines for an ultra-clean appearance under the hood.

Vaughn then took his car to Rim1 in Phoenix, Arizona and had K-Sport’s Airtech heightadjustable suspension kit installed. Since he uses this as a daily driver, traveling from north Phoenix to work near the Phoenix International Airport each day, having the ability to lift the car makes it useful and prevents damage to the APR carbon fiber front splitter and C-West nose. Look carefully and you can see the splitter is mounted to the front bumper cover, which is set up to be quickly removed from the Silvia with just a couple hand tools. The fuse panel was relocated just below the front right headlamp, so having easy access is a necessity. The brakes were upgraded with Powered By Max two-piece slotted rotors in the front and rear. Then he contacted Motegi Racing, which was kind enough to build a set of forged Traklite 1.0 wheels to his specifications. The satin black rollers measure 18x10 inches in the front with a negative 19 mm offset and 18x12 in the rear with a zero offset. The dish on these wheels is spectacularly-deep and matches the wide-body fenders perfectly. “While we had it up in the air we installed those as well,” he says jokingly. Because the car is a daily driver and needs a lot of camber on the rear control arms, Vaughn is running a set of Hankook 225/40 R18s on the front and 285/30 R18s on the rear. Efrain with Suspicious Garage installed Tomei cams and a new PowerFC engine management system and fuel pump. Greg with Sakura Garage then touched up the paint (it’s a daily driver, remember) and his buddy Eric Beaver completed the final touches, making it ready for the road and the shows. What isn’t readily apparent are the little items that make this machine a ‘com42
plete package’ car: the 880 cc injectors, ARP head studs clamping the metal head gasket and ARP exhaust manifold studs that support the heavier turbo and manifold, the PowerLab open dump tubes, Nismo valve springs and rocker arms, GReddy intake manifold and the Powered by Max front mounted intercooler. He had the pulleys anodized purple, ordered a custom catch can and installed a Koyorad twin-core radiator. At this level of build-up, the power is “just a hair shy of 500 hp on race gas and a beast to drive on the street.” He also added this tidbit: “I’ve owned many Skylines and other JDM cars, but never have I received the attention this car brings. It’s like driving a dream come true.” The interior features carbon fiber panels and ProSport gauges for boost, water temperature, oil pressure and the wideband O2 readout for tuning. The front seats are the always-excellent

Recaro Speeds and are fitted with Sparco harnesses for the driver and passenger. A Momo Race steering wheel hangs on an NRG quick-release hub. With all of this, he still found the time to have a little fun with a Panasonic double-DIN head unit, JL Audio four-channel and mono amplifiers, and a JL Audio W3 12-inch sub mounted below the K-Sport aluminum air tank in the trunk. Everything is nicely integrated and the tones and hues of the individual pieces are very subtle. It’s a pleasant cabin in which to pass the miles during his daily commute. “There weren’t many complications with the build, other than the wait itself. Ever since I laid eyes on the car, I knew this was how it had to be and I wasn’t going to stop until it was just right. All said and done, I have over $60K invested.” We agree anything this fine can truly be seen as an ‘investment’ and not mere transportation, but what’s craziest is his attitude — he simply loves driving this car around. “I have beat out all the competition at shows ranging from California to Arizona to Nevada. I know I’ll probably never own another car like this again. I want to give a big thanks to my lovely wife Candice and my kids Alexis, Zoey, Vera and son William, whose support means so much.” This just goes to show that, with the addition of a dedicated owner, there is life after the movies after all.

Who says change isn’t good?!
DMCC 2013 Preview
Story & Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover
T
he 2013 DMCC season is about to start and there are a number of changes sure to bring excitement to drivers and fans alike. After last season, the DMCC announced the Pro-Am category would be merging with the Pros. With the merger, the events grow from a Top 16 competition to a Top 32 competition. Shortly after that announcement, more big news came in. The DMCC was bought by a company called G1 Tours, a local group that owns Circuit Ste-Croix and organizes Ferrari and Lamborghini track days just outside of Quebec City. When G1 Tours came in, it turned DMCC on its head — but for the better. For one, they are waiving all driver entry fees, allowing teams to invest more into their race programs. Without participation fees, a large number of drivers have been signing up for the season — so many that the series has had to reinstate the ProAm competition — and adopt a knock-out qualification system that leads to a better show and a faster qualifying process. In addition, prize purse amounts have been increased to a staggering $10,000 grand prize for every winner, $4,000 for second place and $2,000 for third. The Pro-Am prizes have increased to $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second and $750 for third. Previously, Circuit Ste-Croix hosted DMCC events when the series first started; and, more recently, G1 Tours hosted a threeround drift event called the 418 Payback at the track. With G1’s 46

purchase of the DMCC, the 418 Payback has been merged, meaning an additional two rounds of competition at Ste-Croix to the schedule, for a total of eight rounds for the 2013 DMCC season. Along with these developments, the famous Victoriaville track (set up from a snow dump) will receive a new layout. This season, the track will be bigger and faster — but don't worry, the jump is still there! For the final round, DMCC will return to the Sanair Racing Complex, but instead of using the road course section, the series will set up the Tri Oval track with the goal of reaching the fastest entry speeds in Canadian drift history. During last year’s Victoriaville round, the DMCC held a parade of drift cars from the track to downtown Victoriaville. It was a huge success, so this year the DMCC will host another street parade during the first round in Montmagny, Quebec. In driver news, many of last year’s Pro-Ams are making the jump to the Pro ranks, including last year’s Pro-Am champ Max Lemoine and his crazy LS-powered Chevy S10 pickup truck. Pat Cyr retired his trusty AE86 last season and will be running a FR-S in 2013, while Francis Tasse will be running a massive FD RX-7 with a V8 pushing close to 1,000 horsepower. David Briggs will also be competing in this DMCC season with his LS powered 350Z, the same car he used in Formula D last year. There are even some DMCC vets making a return to competition — Grieg Basdeo will be back running an AE86 with a turbocharged F20C. With vast number of changes, the 2013 DMCC season looks like it will be action-packed. Stay tuned to www.pasmag.com and www.DMCCdrift.com for all the, news, race results and info. here's a common notion that all VIP Cars are owned by gangsters. This started with cars in Japan that were used to drive high-ranking Yakuza members around the city. When VIP Cars first started to hit the North American scene, all we saw were Japanese sedans dropped all the way to the ground sitting on large wheels. The first thing that came to many people's minds was, 'Are these gangsters dressed in suits stepping out of the slammed sedans?'

You have options to build the LS in either a classy or aggressive setup. I wanted to build a car that I can show, but at the same time be able to drive daily.”
To some observers, this was the lifestyle the owners wanted, with companies like Junction Produce, Wald, Sense Brand, Aimgain, Artisan Spirits, K-Break and others surrounding the builds with that gangster squad aura. Many early adopters of VIP Cars in North America all pointed to this type of build as the ideal fit for gangsters. That notion was quickly dismissed by this car. Nat Huynh owns this 2007 Lexus LS460L. Whenever Huynh steps out of his car, most onlookers would assume he fits that bill — always dressing extremely sharp with a very stoic expression on his face. Currently a manufacturing supervisor for a prominent Silicon Valley company, his demeanor exudes being a boss. We first saw this car at a Wekfest event in San Francisco, but at the time couldn’t find the owner. At a Northern California Lexus meet we finally had the chance to meet Huynh in person, sit down and really talk to him about his car. Quickly, we learned that it wasn’t this predetermined gangster notion that drew him to VIP Cars. We asked him simply, 'Why a VIP Car?' “I enjoy the VIP Car culture in Japan. They take pride in their builds,” Hunyh replied. Not once did he mention the terms 'gangster' or 'Yakuza,' he is solely concerned with the 52

way the cars are built. Having seen a few of the early builds from notable members of VIPStyleCars.com, a particular Lexus GS300 from Texas helped fuel the inspiration to start a VIP build of his own. Huynh enjoyed how clean these VIP Car builds are and how they demand attention, and range in features from simple body builds to colorful and crazy wide bodies with deep dish wheels that push the boundaries of fitment. Huynh’s VIP Car journey didn’t start here, however. His first take on a VIP Car was a 2002 Lexus GS300. Utilizing the basics of a VIP Car build, he added a full 13-piece Junction Produce kit and 19-inch Work Euroline DH wheels. This first car was then lowered using a custom air suspension setup. While most people would have been satisfied by this point, Huynh already knew he didn’t want to finish there. Already looking ahead, he had his eye set on the LS line. He luckily found this LS460L right when he was ready to start a new build. The Lexus LS460L is one of the top notch VIP Car platforms that you can build here in the U.S. as well as in Japan. Going by the chassis code USF41 in Japan, this was the car to build if you wanted to make a statement in the VIP Car scene in North America. Huynh told us he wanted an

I wanted to build a car that I can show, but at the same time be able to drive daily.” The LS460L also has the luxury of having a longer wheelbase than the LS460. With that in mind, finding a body kit that fits the longer wheelbase provided an obstacle. Not all body kits had the longer wheelbase side skirt available. Huynh sought out a body kit from Wald to address this. It was an easy decision to use the extended side skirts, rear bumper and side fenders from the Executive Line. Huynh also went back to the Wald catalog and used its inner grille to complete the lineup. Ings then filled out the rest of the body kit with its front bumper lip spoiler. On to the suspension. Huynh originally decided to use a Data Systems controller to raise and lower the OEM air suspension on the car. Over time he felt this setup wasn’t going to cut it, and went to Impact Performance in San Francisco to see about installing an Air Runner On-The-Ground setup. This particular setup allows the owner to dial in the height of the suspension while keeping an optimal air pressure to provide great ride comfort. With the air suspension dialed in, Huynh contacted David at VIP Modular and received 22-inch VR01 wheels mounted with Nexxen tires. Keeping things simple on the inside, Huynh started with a Vip'd Out Bombay line front table. Shortly thereafter, Junction Produce seat cushions and Bellezza neck cush-

ions were added so everyone was sitting comfortably. Huynh also added a handmade custom rear seat divider with an iPad mount. To complete the interior a Junction Produce Fusa and Kintsuna were installed. The engine bay is dressed up with all of the engine covers color-matched with the pearl white exterior hue. A custom exhaust built by Joe Z PTS has also been installed to finalize the build, which after all has been said and done, has taken roughly 10 months to get it to its current state. Huynh brought his car out to a few of the major events in Northern California, immediately turning heads at events like Wekfest SF and Blox Open House with awards ranged from placing in the Best VIP and Best Lexus categories. “Building this car has led me to meet a lot of nice people along the way. People who have helped me work towards completing this project,” says Huynh. “I am far from being done with the car, but the friends I’ve met along the way have made it even more worthwhile.” Huynh’s car has also earned him an invite into Endless Projects, a car club based in Northern California. Sticking to the club name, Huynh has started to look to the future with a major rebuild already well into the planning stages. With all of the new mods being put into place, this LS460L — and its gangster heritage — has the potential to truly be an endless project.

ver the past year, you’ve probably noticed the little Scion iQ project car we’ve been working diligently on and tracking within these very pages. If you haven’t, you should definitely check out some back issues. That said, all good things must come to an end. And, like any proud parent, it is with great pride and slight apprehension that we say goodbye to the PASMAG Scion iQ, as it is finally ready to take on the big, bright world! For those who are unfamiliar with our pintsized project car, the iQ is almost entirely an audio/video and aesthetic build. In a nutshell, this means there has been no work done to the engine, exhaust or drivetrain. The upgrades are solely for cosmetic and entertainment purposes. Plenty has already been written about the installation process of each component. Here, we’ll focus on how the modifications have improved the look of the already striking car, and the reasons behind the design. To begin, the

exterior of the car features a Five Axis Design (FIVE:AD) four-piece aero kit that widens the body and rounds out the shape of the car, as the iQ naturally looks a little boxy. Ibherdesign fender flares give the vehicle a more aggressive look and a Versus Motorsports carbon fiber hood is the perfect complement to the textured silver vinyl wrap by RestyleIt.ca. To contrast the iQ’s body color, 205/45 R17 Yokohamas are wrapped around black König 17x7.5 Deception wheels. In contrast with the silver paint job and the tiny stature of the iQ, your eyes are immediately forced to these jet black monstrosities. Not stopping there, big

The fact these brakes greatly improve iQ’s stopping power is just the cherry on top. Finally, as a last bit of external aesthetic enhancement, the car is lowered using TRD springs, effectively transforming the cute little iQ’s exterior into that of a stocky running back ready to punch a hole through the defensive line. Inside the vehicle you’ll notice the stock seats are replaced by Sparco Chrono road racing seats and, most importantly, there are lots of electronic goodies to play with.

In total, the car features six Clarion 6.5inch SRQ 1632 speakers, a Clarion PXW 1051 subwoofer, 4/3/2-channel power amplifier and a gigantic Samsung 32-inch LCD HDTV in the back. Up front, there’s a Clarion NX501 head unit harnessing this power while a Clifford alarm system helps keep our investment safe. Other audio/video modifications make for a package that will keep any electronics buff happy, and include sound-deadening materials, Got Wirez speaker wiring and amp kits as well as a Sony PS3. The purpose behind turning our little iQ into an audio monster stems from

our desire to transform a tiny car into something that’s figuratively larger than it actually is. By giving it the capability to pump out louder and better sound, it has a voice that can’t be ignored. The other modifications support this theme, from oversized wheels to the aggressive body kit and the lowered stance. Every choice in this build design was made with the intention of making the iQ bigger. tance is all the rage these days. Thuysi (pronounced 2C) Nguyen owned a V35 that was among the first to push the limits; the fenders lend themselves quite well to aggressive offsets. After stepping up to this V36 chassis and pushing the limits yet again, someone on the internet reproduced his exact setup, down to the same offset. Without flinching, 2C used this as motivation to push the limits even further. What you see before you is the epitome of perseverance and dedication.

On the street, the car is as aggressive as it gets, with each fender filled with just the right balance of wheel, tire, rotor and caliper.” Outside the car, it takes more than just air suspension to make it look good. Originally equipped with a Top Secret body kit, 2C decided to go with a Baus Auto Zele GT Replica kit with a custom carbon fiber front lip instead. The Hikkatadori trunk has an integrated spoiler while the carbon roof spoiler is a one-off piece. Stance is achieved with K-sport coil-over shock tubes paired with Universal air ride bags. A SPC full camber kit allows 2C to dial in the suspension as needed. All air ride controls are handled through a custom chrome switchbox and digital gauge panel in the center console. Under the fenders, 2C commissioned a set of SSR MS3 wheels specifically for himself. Sitting 20x9.5 with a -11 offset and 20x10.5 with a +6 offset, these wheels aren’t for the faint of heart. Each wheel is wrapped in Falken FK452 rubber — 225/35R20 in front and 245/35R20 in the rear, pushing the limits of what stretched tires are capable of. Each corner makes use of Wilwood brakes — six-pot calipers gripping 14-inch front rotors and four-pot calipers gripping 13-inch rear rotors. On the street, the car is as aggressive as it gets, with each fender filled with just the right balance of wheel, tire, rotor and caliper. 66

The engine bay is also clean with Status Elite carbon engine covers, Samco hoses, Password:JDM bolts, ARC oil and radiator caps and a GT-Spec strut bar. Overall, 2C’s car is the perfect balance of stance, luxury and streetability. When aired up, the car rides smooth to handle any obstacles. MY INTERPRETATION OF VIP STYLE IS SOMETHING THAT IS UNIQUE, LUXURIOUS AND, ABOVE ALL, ONE OF A KIND.”

e’ve all had an obsession that started simple but got out of hand. For Matt Tom, the item in the collection was the Garson D.A.D Swarovski Crystal A/C Louvers. A little bling for his eco-friendly daily driver was all it was supposed to be. Over 40,000 crystals later (hand laid by Tom himself), the car has become a rolling piece of art. Tom originally purchased the car shortly after graduating from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. A techie at heart, Tom is fascinated by the Lexus hybrid-drive system, so he chose the CT200h over several other options he was considering. My build is very unique and is a product of my vision. It’s unhindered by other people’s opinions on how a car should be built.” Attending Wekfest in February 2011 was a turning point for Tom. There, he made the decision to take the car down for a few months and overhaul everything at once. The first U.S. Lexus CT Aimgain body kit was imported (and integrated with IS-F exhaust tips), Air Runner’s fully integrated air suspension and AccuAir eLevel system arranged, and Tom ordered and placed the over 40,000 Swarovski crystals on various parts of the car. It’s easy to see that substantial time and planning was done to ensure all elements of the car were cohesive. Keeping with the Eco theme, faux fox fur was used in the interior to give a plush and luxurious look. Tom learned to sew in order to make the seat covers and trim pieces, breaking several needles before getting the hang of it. He even made the bamboo floor, choosing it because of its sustainability and durability as hard flooring. Rounding out the interior, the authentic Swarovski Crystal Chandelier replaces the traditional dome light, built of the highest quality crystals available for chandeliers. Every possible piece from Garson D.A.D. has been 78

integrated into the build, including monogram curtains with tassels and ties, square cushions, neck pads, mirror and crystal mirror faces, along with other elements. Custom iJDMtoy interior LED and strip lighting keeps the interior bright at night and when entering and exiting the vehicle. Under the hood, the 2ZR-FXE motor is relatively unmodified. In less than two years, Tom has racked up more than 45,000 miles on the car, so modifications have been kept to a minimum to preserve drivability. An Injen short ram intake and Amsoil oil filter help the motor breathe while the exhaust is stock save for the IS-F tips. Popping the hood, the OEM engine
and battery covers are paint-matched to give the bay a clean and tasteful touch. With stance being an important element in any VIP build these days, Tom was approached by SSR Wheels to partner and debut the Professor MS3 three-piece wheel. Danh Vo from Tanabe USA did the measuring for the offsets, and 19x9 +37 fronts and 19x9.5 +30 rears are just millimeters away from the OEM regenerative brakes. In the trunk, PowerBass has stepped up to provide a pair of 10-inch S-T10D dual coil subwoofers that are powered by an ACA500.1D amp. The PowerBass 3XL-6502 sixinch mids and 3XL-2S 1.25-inch tweeters

The audio system was built by Tuan Nguyen, President of Supreme Society car club out of his TN Auto Inspired shop in Alhambra, Calif. In the past year, the car has turned heads and racked up several awards at local shows, including Best Lexus, Best Hybrid, Best Interior and even Best of Show. It came as no surprise when we spotted it sitting front

Some closure
on enclosures eople often ask me, “How do I choose the correct type of enclosure?” A sealed enclosure can be a bit smaller, provide good power handling at all frequencies and offer extended low frequency response. As the air volume of a sealed enclosure is reduced, the lowest frequencies begin to attenuate and the middle bass frequencies increase. As the box gets smaller, more power is also required to maintain the level of the low frequencies. A vented or ported enclosure is usually 20% to 30% larger, but offers significantly more output near the tuned frequency as well as very high power handling at and above the tuned frequency. A properly adjusted subsonic filter is always a good idea with a vented design, because the power handling drops off rapidly below the tuned frequency of the enclosure. The subsonic filter is set slightly below the tuned frequency of the box and used to limit the output of the sub amp below Fb. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages and their own unique compromises. One of the key factors in the sealed-versus-vented decision is the woofer you plan to use. Because of certain mechanical and electrical factors, some woofers work much better in sealed enclosures while others are suited for a vented design. A few woofers can be used with relatively equal success in either type of enclosure. Generally speaking, you should always follow the manufacturer recommendations for enclosure type, although experience has taught me that most factory recommended boxes are a bit on the small side for optimal performance. If there are no factory suggestions, you can usually determine what type of enclosure by the Thiele-Small parameters on the woofer. Look for the Qts of the speaker – if that number is 0.4 or higher, you can feel safe with a sealed system. Drivers with very low Qts numbers generally work better in vented enclosures. Another method that works fairly well requires you to know the electrical Q of the speaker (Qes) and its reso82
nant frequency in free-air (Fs). If you know these specifications, you can calculate what Richard Small referred to as the “Efficiency Bandwidth Product.” In general, if the EPB is greater than 50, you should consider a vented design, but if it’s less than 50, a sealed design is preferred. For example, let’s say we have a woofer with a Qes of 0.45 and an Fs of 27 Hz. To find the EPB, you simply
program or laser tape measure to build a subwoofer box. Decide how much space you can devote to an enclosure, then choose the woofer (or woofers) that work in the space you have. If you are going to build a vented box, you should consult someone who knows how to tune the enclosure and determine the proper port area(s) and length. Use plenty of glue on the joints and seams because the adhesive ultimately gives the box its strength – not the 500 countersunk screws that took four hours to drill. Some of the best and quickest built enclosures use plenty of glue and small-gauge, air-driven nails that simply hold it together until the glue dries. The glue also helps seal the seams, which are usually just right angle butt joints. Add an input cup terminal to connect to the amp, then finish the exterior of the enclosure as desired. Build the box carefully, using 0.75inch MDF or marine-grade plywood. Craftsmanship counts, so if you can’t cut a straight line or don’t have a table saw, you’re probably better off leaving this job to a pro. Hopefully this quick explanation will give you some insight on what type of enclosure to use, and how to make sure your woofer works with it. Good luck and have fun!
You do not need a fancy computer modeling program or laser tape measure to build a subwoofer box.” divide the Fs by the Qes. In this case, 27/0.45 = 60. This lends itself towards a vented enclosure. Another woofer may have a Qes of 0.65 and an Fs of 24 Hz. This driver would have an EPB of about 37, so it would work better in a sealed enclosure. Remember, these are just rules of thumb and should be used to point you in the right direction; they aren’t absolutes. Another thing about putting bass in your car (contrary to what some might tell you), is that you do not need a fancy computer modeling

NO SUBSTITUTES FOR THE subwoofer
D
By Paul Pirro (with notes from Dave MacKinnon)
o I really need a subwoofer? If I don't add one, what do I really lose? Where is the best place to mount my subwoofer? Does size really matter? Is too much power a bad thing? Let's take a look at these common questions and come up with some answers. A subwoofer plays a vital role in the accurate reproduction of music. It's responsible for reproducing the low frequency information the smaller speakers in your audio system are otherwise unable to. A subwoofer adds emotion and makes things sound “realistic” in your vehicle; hence, a well-tuned subwoofer can add excitement to a system. Occasionally, subwoofers get a bad rap because adults think they're only used for loud bass music but, of course, that is not the case. Do I really need a subwoofer? Yes, you do. All music contains bass, midbass, midrange and treble. Within these four frequency ranges, subwoofers generally reproduce the frequencies around 80 Hz and below. Some people like their bass tight and accurate, while others prefer it sloppy and boomy. Subwoofer enclosure and installation choices vary, but include infinite baffle, sealed, ported and multiple variations and combinations of these often called bandpass. If I don't add one, what do I really lose? Music styles, including rock, country, pop, dance and techno all contain low frequency music information that completes the musical sound spectrum. It is important to know that subwoofer frequencies are produced by instruments such as a bass drum, guitar, piano, organ and of course synthesizers. And, if you do not have a subwoofer, this information will be missing and the audio system will sound weak or incomplete.
Where to put it? Over the years, auto sound enthusiasts have tried to mount subwoofers in all manner of positions for optimum performance. Is there such a thing? The answer is simple. Every audio system is different and, depending on your needs, a professional installer will be able to assist. Go to an IASCA, MECA or USACi event and you will notice many high-end systems with the subs mounted up front. We are seeing more people using front-mounted subwoofer locations in their vehicles. 84
I spoke with Gary Biggs, veteran car audio pro and multiple World Champion in IASCA, MECA and USACi, to understand why. Biggs states that using a corner-loaded location, the subwoofer can couple with the air better and produce more output. Putting the subwoofer up front is one solution to solving the problem of not having “sub bass up front,” which, in the past, has been lacking according to judges and/or discerning audio listeners. The bass instruments (such as an oboe or bass guitar) become more “up front, which helps your soundstage, width and depth,” says Biggs. “This allows you to properly tune your midbass, midrange and tweeters without straining them as we did in the old days.” Both vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket are using new technology to make this mounting location possible. For example, BMW is using eight-inch shallowmount subs under the front seats of some of its vehicles. Almost all aftermarket subwoofer manufacturing companies have developed “slim” or “shallow” subs to fill this need. Does size really matter? Due to advances in computer modeling and material science, size has become less important than it has been in the past. Many manufacturers have even stopped making subs as large as 15 or 18 inches. Current trends dictate that today's average buyer wants their audio system to be hidden and/or discrete. Companies like JL Audio and MTX take advantage of this and offer vehicle-specific subwoofer systems. Some also come with a built-in amplifier. If you prefer to use a different brand of subwoofer, Atrend and Bassworx offer vehicle-specific enclosures without the subs and/or amps included. Some people don't even want to use an enclosure and opt for infinite-baffle mounting solutions that rely on a baffle mount system to seal the trunk area off from the interior of the vehicle. You do need to choose subwoofers designed specifically for this type of application. To go bigger or not to go bigger To increase the output of your audio system by three decibels, you need to double the cone area of your speakers or double the power going to your speakers. Nevertheless, if you want to save space and still use your OEM electrical system, you may want to reconsider the power doubling option. Big power equals big money, and sometimes requires an alternator and almost always a battery upgrade. The good news is that several companies such as Kinetic, XS
Power, Reikken/Energie, Shuriken and Xstatic all offer energy storage components that address the demands of a more powerful audio system. Is too much power a bad thing? The big questions customers ask retailers are: “How much power do I need?” “Is too much power a bad thing?” “And, can I under-power my subs?” When it comes to not having enough power, your system will distort once you push the amplifier past its limit and things will sound terrible. If you have too much power, you will damage your subwoofers by overheating the voice coil and causing the varnish on the windings, or the joint between the coil former and the cone, to fail. A few key words to remember are self-control and balance. This is why it is so critical to clearly specify your needs and desires when you purchase your subwoofer system. Not having enough power will not let the system play loud enough. Conversely, not having subwoofers that can handle the power you have will result in their lives being shortened dramatically. Conclusion Adding a subwoofer to your system is essential, and required to complete the (audio) information within the music you'll be enjoying. Regardless of budget, there are many types of subwoofers to fit different applications and mounting locations. Be sure to hire a qualified installer from a retailer you can trust. Ask your installer to tune the system for your habits to prevent abuse and damage that may not be covered by your subwoofer's warranty. Following this advice will allow your system to work hassle-free, and you will enjoy years of amazing sounding music without worry. Dedicated to the “Grandmother of Bass,” Alma Gates, who passed away on March 28, 2013.

DUMMIES SUBWOOFERS FOR
BY DAVE MACKINNON
As with all speaker purchases, auditioning them is key. Take your favorite music down to your local car audio specialist shop and start listening." Picking the perfect subwoofer for your system is as hard as picking the perfect car. It’s a delicate balance of wants, needs and performance, and one that is best executed with the help of an experienced salesperson or installer. Let’s take a look at the nitty gritty of what makes a subwoofer tick.
L
ike a car, a subwoofer needs a chassis. These can be made of stamped steel, or on higher-priced models, cast aluminum. They are typically powder coated to provide a tough durable finish. And just as with a car, the stronger and stiffer the chassis (also called a basket) is, the better off you are. Some subwoofers have very heavy magnets, so a strong chassis that is able to withstand vibrations and stresses imposed as you drive down the street is critical. Attached to the base of the chassis is the motor. Yes, we call the magnet and associated parts the motor. It is half of what makes the speaker move. There are three parts to the motor assembly: The magnet, the top plate and the T-yoke. The top plate is a simple mild steel disc that sits on top of the magnet and focuses the magnetic energy on the voice coil. The magnet is of course the source of the magnetic field. The T-yoke focuses the magnetic field from the bottom of the magnet to the inside of the voice coil. The motor also needs to be able to help dissipate heat built up in the voice coil, so its design is critical. The cone assembly is comprised of four
86
components: The cone itself, the surround, the spider at the base of the cone and the voice coil assembly. The cone can be made of paper, glass fiber, plastic or composites of many materials. Its job is to be light and rigid, and to transfer the motion generated by the voice coil assembly to the air to make sound. The voice coil assembly features a former made of aluminum or high-temperature plastics like Kapton, and a winding of copper or aluminum wire. The surround is a flexible connection at the top of the cone that allows the cone to move up and down. These are often pleated cloth, foam or rubber. The spider is the key suspension component of the woofer, though it works in conjunction with the surround to control the motion of the cone up and down. It also serves to keep the voice coil centered in the motor assembly so it doesn’t rub. So, how does a speaker work? When you apply a voltage to the voice coil a magnetic field is created around the windings. This magnetic field either moves the voice coil away from the magnet, or pulls it closer to it. If, as with music, you alternate the polarity
of the voltage applied to the voice coil, the speaker cone moves in and out, and voilà, music is made. A quick side-note – speakers are made with single, double or quadruple voice coil windings. The windings can have different resistances (formally called impedance). No one design is any better than another, as they only exist to provide flexibility to the installer. Different wiring configurations (series or parallel) let the installer wire the subwoofers to make the amp produce different amounts of power. There are a set of about 20 parameters called Thiele-Small parameters that your installer can use to predict the behavior of a subwoofer in different enclosures. Learning to balance enclosure designs to meet customer needs and desires is an art, and takes experience. That’s what we pay installers for. As with all speaker purchases, auditioning them is key. Take your favorite music down to your local car audio specialist shop and start listening. We could talk about subwoofers for this entire issue, but for now, it’s time to see what’s available.

hen a brand like MB Quart says, “This is the best sounding woofer we have ever built,” you sit up and take notice. The woofer it is referring to is the all-new Premium Series PWM304. This moniker means the woofer has a diameter of 30 cm (or 12 inches) and uses a selectable two- or eight-ohm voice coil configuration. The woofer is designed for music enthusiasts who have graduated from the “SPL phase” — where listening to test tones and burp tracks is the norm — and want to listen to real music. The PWM304 is available now with a MSRP of $259.99 (USD).

Features Unpacking the woofer to take a closer look, I see this as something quite different for MB Quart. Instead of the typical poly cones found at this price point, the PWM304 uses a combination of two different layers of woven glass fiber material. The main cone is formed in red fiber with a largediameter concave dust cap in the same material in black. This provides not only a distinctive appearance, but a very strong and rigid yet lightweight cone. Built on a deep-drawn stamped steel basket finished in textured gray powdercoat (it looks like a cast piece at first glance) the outer diameter of the cone is attached to the basket lip by a wide butyl

rubber surround treated to withstand UV radiation. Looking under the cone reveals more tricks and features not normally found at this price point. Dual mirror-image spiders in MB Quart red are used to provide linear control of the moving assembly in both directions of travel, and are sandwiched in a special raised spider landing made of red ABS. Another excellent feature is the ultra-simple and elegantly-implemented wire terminal impedance jumper. Although this is a selectable two- or eight-ohm voice coil woofer — and thanks to a brilliant design idea — it only needs a single pair of terminals. Located just above the springloaded terminals is a removable jumper terminal. Pulling it out of the socket on the woofer frame reveals four electrical contacts that connect the selectable voice coil configuration — either in series or parallel — depending on the orientation of the jumper. To make things super easy, the jumper is built in such a way that, when installed, the woofer impedance is printed out right below the jumper. Whether you are wiring a single woofer or a bunch of these together, it doesn’t get easier than this.
Maybe best of all, you never have to worry about accidentally wiring the woofer coils out of phase and burning it up to get sound out of it (don’t laugh it happens all the time!). Additionally, the wiring configuration jumper serves as over-current protection, with a pair of 10 A mini fuses completing the connections. Driving the whole unit is a 2.5-inch (65.5 mm) four layer, high-temperature aluminum voice coil formed from premium imported wire. The coil has a winding length of almost 40 mm for plenty of linear excursion, and is wound on a vented black anodized aluminum former with a spunlace Nomex collar for maximum heat dissipation. Magnetic energy to drive the coil comes from a 100-ounce magnet, sandwiched between a 10 mm-thick top plate and a cold-forged monolithic vented yoke. A smooth, molded rubber magnet bumper trims the motor nicely for a well-integrated look.
Listening After a six hour break-in and taking my time through the physical features of the PWM304, I’m looking forward to giving it a serious listen. Ac-
cording to the owner's manual, the woofer works well in a sealed enclosure of approximately 1.25 cubic feet. Since I have one handy, I mount the PWM304 in my enclosure with the wiring jumper configured for a twoohm load. I set my subwoofer amplifier low pass filter for 100 Hz at -24 dB per octave and begin what turned into three solid hours of fun. I start with a really cool bass track from Bachman-Turner Overdrive called “Not Fragile.” Produced in the early 1970s, this is one of the first recordings I ever heard that featured very well-recorded low-end bass. In the beginning of the track, bassist Fred Turner lays down a deep groove that continues through most of the song. Between Turner’s bass and Bachman’s kick drum and floor tom work, the track is pretty telling of a woofer’s ability to reproduce rapid changes in deep bass notes. The PWM304 is easily up to the task with very good attack and decay and a nice natural-sounding timbre. As I often do when I want to put a woofer system to the test, I dig out one of my all-time favorite bass test tracks, “Oh Yeah” by Yello. The MB Quart handles the track in stride, pro-
ducing deep, loud bass with no complaints. A few more tracks from 50 Cent, The Pussycat Dolls and Nine Inch Nails quickly prove this system will play loud and low if that’s your thing — but it is so much better than that. A truly musical woofer needs to be articulate — not just to boom, but also to reproduce the intricate details that can be found in the bass portion of music. In this area, the MB Quart woofer really rises to the occasion. Using a bunch of different tracks, including Rickie Lee Jones’ “Danny’s All Star Joint,” Thom Rotella’s “Friends" and The Barenaked Ladies with expertly-plucked stand-up bass, the sonic capabilities of the woofer impress. Just for fun, I switch to a 1.5-cubic foot vented box to see what the difference would be. Immediately I note more output, but a distinct lack of the tight, controlled bass I enjoyed in the sealed enclosure. The woofer now has a “peaky” sound to it and seems boomy. By simply changing from a sealed to a ported enclosure, the subwoofer now favors an

kick pedal on the drum head. But, what it really does well is simply play music. In the right sealed box, this is a musical woofer designed for someone who appreciates sound, not just SPL. Switch to a ported enclosure and you get deep and loud bass, which is ideal for the SPL junkies.
This is a musical woofer designed for someone who appreciates sound, not just SPL.”
On the Bench Bringing the woofer into the lab, I measure its parameters. My measurements are somewhat different from those in the manual, which inexplicably only provides Thiele-Small data for the eight-ohm configuration. I also note that, with an efficiency bandwidth product of 35, this is much more of a sealed enclosure woofer. Granted it can be used in a vented application, but the sound quality will cater to a different type or music and listener.

Acoustical output differences between the two enclosure types. Note the narrow peak of the vented design between 40 and 75 Hz.
After my listening evaluation I have a better understanding of the “best sounding MB Quart woofer ever” comment I heard. While I can’t say if it actually is the best sounding woofer they’ve ever built, I agree it does sound very good indeed. This is a woofer for a serious listener, someone who knows music and what it should sound like. Make no mistake, there are plenty of woofers that will play louder, so if you are more inclined to buy a woofer to impress the people on the sidewalk, there are better choices. But if you simply love well-produced music and don’t mind giving up some output level and boom, the PWM304 should be high on your list of woofers to audition. TS-W310D4 12” Subwoofer review By Garry Springgay

f you follow any of the SPL contest wars you’re probably aware that, in the past, Pioneer has stacked up the trophies with its Premier Series high power SPL woofers. Pioneer was the first manufacturer to break the 180 dB barrier in SPL competition. Now you can enjoy the same technologies and sound quality at everyday prices, thanks to its new Pioneer Champion Series woofers, which are available in 10- and 12-inch sizes. The good folks at Pioneer Electronics have been kind enough to supply us with a sample to put to the test. Featuring dual fourohm voice coils and rated to handle 400 watts of continuous power, the TS-W310D4 is the new 12-inch version, which is available at Pioneer retailers around the country with a MSRP of $160 (USD). pioneerelectronics.com

Features Incorporating many of the Champion Series Pro woofer features — the attractive high gloss and super strong IMPP composite seamless cone and Pioneer’s revolutionary dual-layer Elastic Polymer Surround — the TS-W310D4 woofer is designed to move a lot of air. The ultra-rigid full size IMPP dust cap over the pressed paper cone provides all the strength necessary for high SPL levels while the high-tech materials still allow the low-mass assembly to provide accurate, detailed bass output and good sensitivity.

The cone assembly is driven by two-inch, four-layer copper voice coils wound on aluminum formers for maximum heat dissipation. The voice coil assembly is centered in the magnetic gap by a linear-type Nomex spider. This moving assembly is mounted in a heavy-duty stamped steel basket, which incorporates venting holes under the spider to allow proper cooling of the voice coil. The basket of the woofer features a large, flat landing where the spider mounts to. And, in cases when the back of the subwoofer is shown (such as a customized install), Pioneer has added a removable magnet cover made of ABS for instant cosmetic appeal. Under the cover, a 74-ounce, high-energy strontium ferrite magnet assembly provides more energy than your typical ceramic magnet. Spring-loaded nickel-plated electrical connections for the dual voice coils are
conveniently located on one side of the woofer frame. I like the terminals mounted like this as it simplifies the wiring configuration whether you choose series, parallel or running each coil from a separate amplifier channel. Mounting the woofer is accomplished with the usual eight screws and the woofer comes with an integrated trim ring for a clean finished look.
Listening According to the owner's manual, the TS-W310D4 can be used in either sealed, vented or bandpass type enclosures with suggested volumes of 1.25-, 1.5- and 0.9-cubic feet, respectively. For my listening session, I decide to try it in both sealed and vented configurations, since I have the correct size enclosures already on hand. With the TS-W310D4 loaded in the 1.25-cubic foot sealed

enclosure and my amplifier's low pass crossover set to 80 Hz, I begin my listening. Within a few bars of the first song I know this is a pretty good sounding woofer, with nice articulation and a warm tone. Detail and control are very good, the bass is tight and accurate. But, in this enclosure, it sounds like the very lowest octave is lacking a bit of output. Switching to a vented enclosure with the enclosure volume of 1.5-cubic feet tuned to approximately 35 Hz makes a big difference in output. There is more output almost everywhere, so much that I have to readjust the balance of levels between the woofer and my full-range speakers. With the level balanced again, I enjoy the additional output, but find it comes at the cost of some of the articulation and detail I had enjoyed so much with the sealed enclosure. The upside is the TS-W310D4 can please both ends of the spectrum. Audio purists will almost certainly choose a sealed enclosure, maybe slightly larger than the suggested volume, while the folks who prefer high energy and excitement from a lot of low frequency output will lean heavily towards vented enclosures. I prefer sound quality to quantity, so I would opt for a sealed enclosure and enough power to get the SPL levels I want. After all, power is cheap, and this woofer has no problem handling levels up to — and even a little over — its 400 watt rating.
Conclusion Pioneer has created a woofer that will appeal to a wide range of buyers. While it’s not the best-sounding or best-performing SPL woofer out there, it can satisfy a much wider range of performance goals than most other woofers. The TS-W310D4 is a dream product from a dealer standpoint, because it can please almost everyone from the sound quality crowd to SPL show-offs simply by choosing the appropriate type of enclosure. Though this flexibility comes with compromises on both ends of the spectrum, for the vast majority of people who find themselves somewhere in the middle, it offers excellent performance for the price. Rockford Fosgate
P2D2 12” Woofer review By Garry Springgay
S
ince the first Punch woofer was built almost 30 years ago, Rockford Fosgate has been an industry leader in subwoofer technology and performance. These days, the venerable Punch series of woofers encompasses three separate series of products, each with its own attributes. This time we’re looking at and listening to a woofer from the mid P2 series — specifically the P2D2-12. As you may have guessed from the model number, this is a 12-inch woofer with dual two-ohm voice coils. The P2D2-12 has a continuous power rating of 400 watts and a suggested retail price of $169.99 (USD). rockfordfosgate.com

Features Each P2 woofer is built on a unique heavy-duty stampedsteel basket that Rockford calls “StampCast.” Built into the basket is an innovative mounting system known as “FlexFit.” The basket is features a special slot-mounted frame pattern to allow fine-tuning and adjustments to the woofer position. A diamond-cut cast aluminum trim ring is included with the woofer to give the final installed version a classy, finished look. Magnetic energy to power the P2D2-12 comes from a double-stacked ferrite magnet assembly that weighs in at 72.8

ounces. The magnetic energy is focused in the narrow gap surrounding the 2.25-inch four-layer copper voice coils, which are wound on aluminum formers to maximize heat dissipation. Additional cooling is provided by vent openings under the spider to allow cool air to enter and hot air to be expelled, thus improving long term power handling and durability. A pair of mirror-image poly cotton spiders keep the coil centered in the gap and provide the precise amount of compliance required. Embedded in the spiders are 16 AWG tinsel leads for maximum current transfer at low impedances. Two pairs of nickel-plated spring-loaded terminals are mounted on opposite sides of the basket, and accept up to 10 AWG cables. This moving assembly drives a Kevlar-reinforced pressed paper pulp cone with an inverted dust cap. Through a clever concept Rockford calls “VAST” (or Vertical Attach Surround Technique), the effective cone area of the P2 woofer is
greater than a typical 12-inch woofer — which means more bass output! Rather than taking up the valuable cone diameter with a standard flat glue landing, the VAST method uses a tall-profile Santoprene surround requiring less space that attaches to the speciallyformed basket. The result is a woofer with exceptional excursion capabilities on top of more cone area. A molded soft rubber magnet cover trims the bottom of the woofer and protects the motor assembly. Earlier this year, Rockford Fosgate announced that all new woofers are tested and verified using state-of-the-art Klippel analyzers and specially-trained and certified personnel to ensure the highest level of product quality and consistency.
Listening After my usual woofer breakin period, I mount the P2D2-12 in a 1.25-cubic foot sealed enclosure (roughly in the middle of the recommended sealed enclosure sizes) and connect it

With the subwoofer amplifier crossover set at 100 Hz with a second order slope, I begin my listening session. First up is Donald Fagen’s classic “Ruby Baby.” This track has an exceptionally well-recorded kick drum, synthesizer and bass guitar. The Punch woofer reproduces everything nicely with a lot of authority and excitement. Next up is “Take the A-Train” from a DMP Big Band disc called Carved in Stone. The stand up bass in this track is in the forefront, and has plenty of natural overtones. Playback of this complex track is also

Rockford Fosgate P2D2 Subwoofer On The Bench After letting the woofer cool and normalize, I remove it from the enclosure and measure its Thiele-Small parameters. Comparing my results to the somewhat limited published numbers, I find them to be spot-on or very close. The following parameters were measured on the sample I tested, with the voice coils in parallel.
When it comes to the sheer enjoyment a Rockford Fosgate woofer brings to your ride, some things haven’t changed at all. very good with a hint of ring from the Punch woofer. At this point, I lower the crossover point to 80 Hz. Switching to some hip-hop and Billy Idol’s “Prodigal Blues” the woofer really comes into its forte with strong, deep bass that begs to be turned up. I listen to the woofer for a couple of hours and play everything from classical to hip-hop and country. Regardless of the genre, the Punch woofer handles everything in stride, and sounds good doing it. I won’t say it’s the most accurate woofer I have ever heard, but it certainly is exciting and fun to listen to. It’s also not perfect from an audiophile perspective, but very few woofers at this price are. Of them,
none could hold a candle to the P2D2-12 in terms of authority and output. Next, I put the woofer in a 1.75-cubic foot vented enclosure, because that configuration is also listed in the manual. The vented design really increases the already impressive output significantly, but at the expense of a certain amount of control and articulation. The bottom end is immensely strong, but seems to lack a bit of the detail and tightness I observe in the sealed enclosure. From my personal perspective, I prefer the woofer in the sealed enclosure. But if you’re willing to give up a little bit of SQ for a whole lot of SPL, maybe the vented enclosure is your choice.
Conclusion Almost 30 years have passed since the legendary Punch woofer first rolled off the assembly line. That’s a long time ago in today’s rapidly changing world. But, while technologies have changed and materials improved for performance that’s better than ever, when it comes to sheer enjoyment a Rockford Fosgate woofer brings to your ride, some things haven’t changed at all. Building Project E36 323is:
the Poor Man's M3
part2 - Suspension Overhaul By Jonathan Lawson | Photography by Jeff Naeyaert & Nick Betz
T
he next stage of our suspension overhaul — replacing dampers and springs — is where most of the handling magic happens. Urban legends would have you believe the original dampers on most E36s are shot at between 60-90,000 miles. We’re here to put that rumor to rest... Our project 323is was purchased with 60,000 miles and we switched to H&R Sport springs and fresh OE shocks and struts at about 80,000 miles. Having reached 150,000 miles, it’s time to replace the OE dampers again, but why go stock when you can go better?! We decided on the twin-tube KW Variant 2 coil-overs because they match our budget and the quality and adjustability we want. They are rebound-adjustable for the perfect balance between street comfort and on-track performance.
The term “coil-over” is a bit of a misnomer on the E36 since the rear spring and shock are separate. The front MacPherson struts are technically a non-adjustable factory coilover strut. Generally, coil-over kits for the E36 offer height adjustability with specifically valved dampers for the springs.
Made from KW's stainless steel "inox-line,” the KW V2 is built to look like new permanently. The piston rods, threaded struts and adjustable collars/ring nuts are also corrosionresistant and easily adjusted, even when the damper is preloaded. The V2 housing is shorter, accommodating the lowered stance and suspension travel. The old springs are barrel-shaped and progressive, while the V2s have a helper spring and shorter 400 lbs/inch linear spring.
The front, 400 lbs/ inch linear rate springs are a great compromise for street and track use. The rebound adjustability means you can dial in a firm but comfortable ride while preventing excessive roll on the track, especially when coupled with Whiteline’s sway bars. Understeer is nearly eliminated on track because of the reduced positive camber gain under load, an evil enemy of front suspension geometry.
The KW V2 kit comes with front coil-overs and threaded sleeves for height adjustability, adjustable spring perch collars and a linear and helper spring. The rears maintain the stock spring and shock configuration, but add heightadjustable spring perches.
The KW V2s bolted in in all their glory. The helper spring does its job of allowing full suspension travel without unseating the spring.
The E36 M3s came from the factory with a bit of caster, but you can see non-M-series cars had the front struts basically straight up and down. We like more caster for high-speed stability, but we also want camber adjustability, which means finding a good set of adjustable camber/caster plates. Installing the shorter springs is the easiest part of the suspension overhaul. Adjustments are made easy by placing the ride height adjuster at the top of the spring. You can reuse the factory dust boot over the KW V2 rear shock to keep grime from getting in and causing headaches down the road.
The rear springs are noticeably shorter and stiffer but progressive, unlike the fronts. The reason for using progressive rate springs in the rear is length. The E36 requires a very short spring in the rear, and that dictates spring rate to a certain degree. Second is ride quality. The TUV certification for German equipment safety requires OEM load capacity, so having a spring that increases in rate is the best choice.
We decided on Ground Control Racing camber/caster plates. They have a solid reputation and have key features we were after. They allow separate camber and caster adjustments, and the bearing design is great. One set of bearings allows for full articulation of the shock shaft while the other is an articulating needle bearing to handle the weight of the car. Howard Watanabe from Technosquare is assembling the GC's stainless steel reinforcement ring to the GC plates with the KW V2s. Howard is tightening the top strut nut and we have a decent view of the reinforcement ring, as well as the helpful engravings showing measurements in degrees. The plates help disperse weight to prevent deformation and cracking, while preventing corrosion between the steel strut tower and the aluminum GC plates.

by You can see the huge range of adjustment the GC plates allow. Camber and caster changes can be made easily by lossening the three nuts on the strut tower and sliding in or out as needed. Adjustments can be made on sliding alignment plates, or by lifting the front of the car off the ground slightly.
Howard tightening the final bolts on the top of the strut tower. At a fairly low 18 ft-lbs, it doesn't take much to get these secured.
The adjustment collar (ring nut) on the KWs was too close to the front tires, so we installed H&R TRAK+ 20 mm spacers before taking it for an alignment. There's an added benefit of a wider track up front, which helps balance the E36's setup even more (we'll talk about that later).Â
15.03_Tech-MotoiQ.indd 2
The TRAK+ spacers are extremely lightweight aluminum/ magnesium while being stronger than typical billet aluminum. They’re also hubcentric, so they have full contact with the hub and the wheel. Longer bolts are definitely required.
Double checking our setup, we went to see Darin and Chris at West End Alignment to get our settings square. Going with a track set up, caster is maxed out at 5.5 degrees, camber at -3 degrees, and 1/8 inches of toe out. Those camber and toe settings are in the sweet spot for a good track and street setup if you don't want various settings for each. The negative camber sounds like a tire killer, but with zero to 1/8 inches of toe out, tire wear isn't bad. On track it maximizes the front contact patch and reduces understeer.

Turbok
Most non-M E36s only allow for toe adjustments in the rear while M3s have an eccentric control arm bolt for making camber adjustments. One of the many benefits of our recent bushing overhaul is the Whiteline control arm bushings, which offer similar adjustments.
In our first outing on the big track at Willow Springs International Raceway, the 323is is confident and very responsive to driver input.
One last shot of our new KW V2s, only something seems to be missing. Could it be something for a future installment? For more tech and motorsports articles, visit MotoIQ.com

Darin dialed in our rear specs: -1.75 degrees of camber with 1/8 inches of toe in. The less aggressive camber setting in the back helps us put the power down earlier and matches the crisp turn-in the front now has. A little bit of toe-in keeps it all drama-free.

weet and spicy are two words that come to mind when we think of Debbie Sath. The girl from down under moved to Hollywood to pursue her career and take modeling to the next level — and we couldn’t be happier! She got into modeling BY posing as a favor for a friend, but her love quickly exploded and she’s been doing it ever since! It doesn’t hurt she’s an avid hip-hop and salsa dancer with buttery smooth skin either.

Where are you from? I'm from
Melbourne, Australia but I currently live in Hollywood, Calfornia. How long have you been modeling? I've been modeling off
and on for four years. How did you get your start in modeling? I started modeling
when a friend wanted me to do a shoot for his portfolio. I had so much fun and realized I wanted to do more of it. What are your strengths as a model? I would say my ability to
move in front of the camera. Once it starts shooting, I have a lot of fun connecting with it. Describe yourself in three words or statements. Driven,
Does your personality match your Zodiac sign?
Who is your favorite model or celebrity of all time? My
My sign says I'm moody and emotional, but I don't think I relate to it at all! I think of myself as chilled and I don't worry about a lot of things. I suspect I may have been born on the wrong day. (haha)
favorite model is Jessica Burciaga. I think she is a beautiful person inside and out. She was the inspiration that got me into modeling all the way from Australia.
What is your best beauty, fitness or nutrition secret?
My best beauty tip is always look after your skin; I moisturize everyday and get plenty of sleep. How do you keep in such great shape? I feel bad when
people ask me how I keep in shape. The truth is I never work out! But, if I have a shoot I make sure to eat right and drink plenty of water or green tea.
honest and warrior!
What is the strangest photo shoot you’ve done?
What are some of your modeling highlights so far?
The strangest shoot I did was for a company I didn’t know about. I was too busy to find out, but it turned out to be a gentlemen's club. So you might see my face at a gentlemen clubs somewhere in L.A! (haha)
That would have to be meeting my fans who have followed me from the beginning of my career.
What traits do you like most about yourself? My favorite
traits about myself are my legs and figure. They make me look taller in my photos, which is a bonus. Do you have any birthmarks, scars or tattoos? I have a
scar on my right knee from playing four-square when I was 10. I landed on my knee and had to get three stitches! Do you have any pets? I have
no pets, but I want a puppy some day soon. What are your hobbies?
I love modeling, but if I had to choose another it would be dancing. I love hip-hop and I also take salsa classes.
What is your favoRite food?
My favorite food is raw oysters — I could eat them every day! Everyone has their weird habits, WHAT ARE YOURS?
When I would sing a song I change the lyrics and make parodies of them. I also do a funny dance at the same time. Not many of my friends get me, but I have a lot of fun entertaining myself. (haha) What is your dream car?
My dream car is the limited addition Nissan Micra Barbie Pink convertible. It’s sex on wheels. What do you look for in a guy? What would he have to do to get your attention and to keep you interested? I'm
far beyond superficial, so I don't care about looks. What's important to me is that he treats me like a princess. If he can treat me right he will have my attention forever. What gets you in the mood?
Foot massage! Preferably deep tissue.

I'm far beyond superficial, so I don't care about looks. How do you feel about pick-up lines? What was the best line that was used on you? Did it work? The best pick
up line was a song someone sang for me. A random stranger got on his knees and started singing about how beautiful I was. It was embarrassing and funny; it didn't work but it was sweet. On a scale of 1 to 10, how wild are you in the bedroom?
I would rate myself a 10 out of 10! (haha) What do you wear to bed? I don't like
wearing much because it’s uncomfortable. I’ll either wear shorts or just a top... or just be naked. :) (hehe) Who are your heroes in life? Why?
My hero in real life is Oprah. She's the most powerful woman ever and I strive to be one too. If you could have one super power, what would it be and why? It would be to be able to
control time. Tell us about any upcoming projects of yours? I will be at
SpoCom Hawaii this July, so say ‘hi’ if you’re in the area! :) With any ‘spotlight’ type of job, you are looked upon as a role model. What advice would you give out to aspiring models? My advice is do your
research, network with the best in the industry, work with the best photographers and get your name out there. Do you have any shout-outs or last words? Shout-out to the team at PASMAG,
Steve Bitanga and Gideon Perez for shooting me. God and Buddah, because I believe in both and my mom and dad, who accept that I model and don't mind! <3
