Unconventional Thinking
Team: Nemo Racing Driver: Chris Eaton Vehicle: Mitsubishi Evo 9 Racing Venue: World Time Attack Challenge Current Turbo(s) of choice: EFR-8374-D
The world’s most advanced aftermarket turbocharger. When we set out to design the EFR turbocharger, we challenged the technological status quo. How much weight could we save with a different material for the turbine wheel? The answer came in the form of Gamma Titanium Aluminide (Ti). A dual ceramic ball bearing cartridge, stainless steel turbine housing and other integrated highlights all come together in harmony to create the most advanced aftermarket turbocharger in the world.

TO WIN COMPETITION BRED 16 WAY REBOUND AND COMPRESSION ADJUSTABILITY The HSD HR coilover is exactly what the performance tuning scene has been crying out for. The HR series coilovers offer the most features and the best quality for under $1350. HSD Coilovers use a Monotube damper design favoured by high end suspension companies and each kit is TUV approved. This level of quality and performance is usually found on much more expensive suspension products.
HIGH QUALITY MONOTUBE DAMPERS
Cheaper aftermarket dampers use a twintube design with low pressure gas whereas our Monotube damper design uses large diameter pistons and a much higher gas pressure to better stabilise the oil within, even under extreme and prolonged use.
HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
A very wide range of height adjustment is possible without affecting the spring pre-load or the damper stroke length. So whether you want sporty or totally slammed, you still get the full performance of the damper.
FULLY ADJUSTABLE DAMPING
Our 16 Stage damping adjustment allows quick, easy and accurate control of the damping so you can tune it to suit your style and setup. Set to soft for your daily drive, then quickly switch to hard for track days or competition use.
PILLOW BALL TOP MOUNTS
Our coilovers come with Anodised Aluminium top mounts with integrated heavy duty noise-free pillowball bearings all round. A wide range of camber adjustment is included on front strut models.

and Brazil. For those who remember Datsun, the news is bittersweet. The company became synonymous with high-performance sports cars world because of the 240Z. The grandfather to Nissan’s 350Z and 370Z, the 240Z was the hottest car in the early 1970s and still has a worldwide cult
following. Among these people are Rejean and Richard Desjardins from Moncton, New Brunswick. When we caught wind of this father-son’s re-worked 240Z, we knew we had to get it into the magazine. Desjardins updated the vehicle with a few modern touches without taking

...the brand is coming back in 2014 as a low-cost label to be tested in emerging markets like China, India and Brazil.” away from the car’s heritage. This is a 240Z through and through but, upon closer inspection, there are modern touches that make even non-classic car enthusiasts turn their heads. The classic-contemporary design philosophy is evident in the bodywork. Wrapped around an MSA Type 3 body kit, the car is definitely wider and meaner than the original. The added grille on the front fender in particular gives the car a menacing demeanor that is popular in modern sports cars, while not taking away from the 240’s distinctive sleek angles. The body is the main modification, but other exterior changes also blend the old with the new, such as halogen glass headlights and chrome accents around the car and a carbon fiber taillight accent piece. Pop open the hood and the same design philosophy is also apparent. Boasting a slightly newer engine in the 3.1-liter L28, the performance has been re-worked with a good mix of old and new parts. On the older side, there is a Datsun 280Z valvetrain and air intake, a triple twobarrel carburetors and an intake manifold from Mikuni-solex. Modern touches come from things like a K&N air filter, Bosch spark plugs and custom fuel rail and camshaft work done by local auto shop I.R.A.C.
24
» Performance
The vehicle’s exhaust is all-new, with an HKS Hi-Power muffler and tip having been installed along with custom a pipe job and a dual exhaust setup. The stock drivetrain has also been swapped with parts from an early ’90s Mustang and a 240SX. Distinct Work Wheels VS-XX rollers match nicely with the chrome accents around the car. The round and angled wheel pattern also works well with the bodywork. Kumho tires surround the wheels and Wilwood brake calipers help stop the 250 horsepower this work of art is packing. Inside, the seats are reupholstered using leather and vinyl from Colin’s Auto Upholstery – another local shop – and the floor mats have the distinctive “Z” logo emblazoned on them. A custom chrome five-point roll bar is a nice touch, both in terms of safety and as a matching feature. Perhaps the coolest thing inside is an autograph from legendary hot-rod modder Chip Foose prominently displayed on the dashboard. The final touch of the old-new blend is the audio system, which isn’t the most pimped out, but definitely gets the job done with a head unit, amps, speakers and subs from Alpine and custom work in order to make this auditory goodness fit comfortably in the car.

Rejean’s 350Z was actually featured in these very pages in 2007, but it was his son Richard who did the majority of the work on this 240Z – showing the apple really doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Originally purchased in the early 1980s, Rejean kept his 240Z in his garage until Richard decided he wanted to bring it into the modern age in 2004. Since then the car has been a nice complement to his 350Z on the Canadian show circuit, picking up a number of awards including accolades at ImportFest Toronto and Montreal. Without a doubt those judges saw exactly what we’re featuring here: a perfect blend of great old-school design with modern innovation and flavor.

Corolla Levin 15.05.indd 1

n the early 1970s, the Toyota Corolla was one of the most successful cars in a number of Asian racing series’. Although the Corolla was available for sale in the Philippines, it was a stripped-down model designed to be economical, unlike the Levin-trim that was actually raced in series like the Japanese Touring Car Championship, Japanese Formula 3 series and World Endurance Championship. For years, these ’70s Corollas have been collected, restored and modified by Filipinos who grew up idolizing these cars. This is one of those stories. Patrick Ng originally picked up this car from a fellow enthusiast a few years back, but it was substantially more stock back then. He traded
a 1986 Corolla hatchback for this chassis and proceeded to build the car to the glory he envisioned. While it may look simple, Ng searched for very specific, rare parts to ensure his build would meet this vision. Setting out to have one of the most talked-about Mango chassis Corollas in the U.S. isn’t an easy task, but he worked hard for just that. Under the hood, the 2TG engine has been completely rebuilt for performance and longevity. The stock crank is replaced with a 3TG stroker crank and TRD forged pistons while. The aluminum head is ported, polished and packed with oversized valves and higher-lift 288 duration intake and exhaust cams by JB

Tom’s Racing short manifolds are paired with dual Solex 44 side draft carbs that bring more air to the motor, while a very rare TRD 4-2-1 rally header moves the air out and through the custom 2.5-inch mandrel-bent exhaust. Paired with the shortratio stock T50 transmission, a Ferodo TRD clutch, eight-kilogram TRD flywheel, balanced OEM driveshaft and TRD two-way LSD, power is put to the ground quickly and efficiently so the 2,100-pound chassis gets off the line quickly. Outside, the American crash-tested bumpers are replaced to accommodate slimmer bumpers and valences from the Asian counterpart. OEM Japanese fender mirrors along with OEM-style carbon fender flares from Restored Japan
are also featured. The body is sprayed in PPG Lamborghini Orange by Revolution Auto Collision in Vallejo, Calif. The lighting package has been updated with TRD Rally H4 headlights and supplemented with very rare Tosco bubble headlight protectors. Several rare badges and trim pieces have made their way on to the car, including the side markers, bonnet vents, washer nozzles and grille trim pieces. At first glance, many of these trim pieces might be overlooked by someone who doesn’t understand the differences between Ng’s Corolla and one they may have seen 20 or 30 years ago; but, to the eye of the enthusiast, these help shape the car to be the unique collector item it is today.

Ng has been through many sets of wheels, but he currently uses 14x7- and 14x8-inch RS Wantanabe wheels with Yokohama S-drive tires. Ng has a collection of wheels at home that includes the Tom's Racing, TRD and even some Hayashi Racing wheels that are highly coveted. Behind the wheels, the front calipers, rear drum brakes and all suspension arms are reconditioned and improved. The suspension is further stabilized with TRD braces and sway bars, which are specifically developed for various racing series in Asia back in the ’70s. Under the chassis, Ng has kept the car just as clean as the body with many suspension components powdercoated or painted to match the chassis. Paired with a plethora of unique parts, the faultless condition of the car makes this one of the most thorough TE27 Corolla builds in North America. For Ng, it is exactly what he grew up idolizing on TV and in magazines. Now he parks this treasure in his garage – it’s his prized possession, a dream fulfilled. After building no less than seven previous Toyota chassis ranging from AE86 Corollas to a Starlet and a Cressida, this one is definitely his favorite. issan Skylines are considered to be unicorns of the car world, particularly in the U.S. Never officially sold in North America before the R35 reprise in 2009, the brand was idolized by teens across the country through exposure in video games like Gran Turismo and Option videos throughout the ’90s. They were dominant compared to any similar car of the generation. Dating back to the 1970s, the Skyline brand has long been one of the winningest brands of any manufacturer in motorsports. With U.S. import laws being very strict and limiting the ability for cars newer than 25 years to get imported into the country (compared to 15 years in Canada), it’s rare to see a Skyline on the streets. While the 25-year rule allows cars to be imported without any major updates for crash testing or emissions laws, it’s rare to find an enthusiast who is interested in spending the big money to bring an old car over that is loud, slow, likely rough around the edges, with presumably more headaches than heroics.
The awesome thing about old cars in general is the smell of ‘old.’ You simply don’t get that anymore.”

Enter Mark Arcenal, creator of Fatlace and the associated family of brands. All of our readers have likely heard of Hella Flush, illest or Slammed Society as brands. All of these were the creations of one man. A selfprofessed collector of everything, Arcenal has a current collection of cars that rivals many people’s entire car history. From Porsche to Audi to Nissan to Volkswagen, from cars built in the ’60s, ’70s, ’90s and 2000s, his collection is oddly unique. No stranger to cars that have graced the pages of magazines, this car is by far the most simple, but also the one with the most history. The KGC10 chassis Nissan Skyline was the first Skyline produced by the Nissan brand — they had previously been built by the Prince Motor Company which was purchased and merged with Nissan in the late 1960s. This model was affectionately called “Hakosuka” by enthusiasts — “hako” meaning “boxy” and “suka” meaning “skyline” in Japanese. Produced with a 2.0-liter inline-six carbureted motor that cranks out 120 horsepower, the car wasn’t known for being one of the fastest during its production, but does have one of the most unique exhaust notes

The same family of engines was used in a variety of chassis at the time, including the 240Z, Datsun 510 and even the first Nissan Maxima. Arcenal’s motor is stock for all intents and purposes, having only gaskets and some other maintenance items replaced to keep the car running properly since he took ownership of it. At first glance, the most substantial mod is the set of Work Meister CR-01 wheels that are stuffed under each corner. With 15x10.5- and 15x12.5-inch and wrapped in Falken Ziex 512 tires sized 205/50 and 225/50 R15 in the front and front and rear, respectively, these wheels are some of the largest under the fenders of

a Hakosuka. Arcenal has long been known for pushing the limits of wheel and tire sizing, and this same Hako previously wore a set of Volk TE37V vintage wheels in 15x9.5 and 15x10 inch (which many consider to be one of the most period-correct style), but those simply weren’t enough. To make everything fit, 30 mm over-fenders have been added up front, and the rears are now wider by a massive 50 mm. Each corner is lowered by a set of Eibach Ground Control coil-overs that narrow the gap between the metal fender and each tire to give the car its aggressive stance. While many hate the word ‘stance’ and the direction that some have taken wheel fitment, there’s no denying how good this car looks lowered on a set of wheels that have been sized to perfection. After selecting the wheels, Arcenal looked for something different to update the exterior of the car without changing the classic lines of it. As an experienced car and fashion designer, Arcenal has an understanding of which elements can be tastefully changed to give the car a whole new look. For the Hakosuka, the front and rear bumpers, headlight surrounds, taillight surrounds and front grille have all been powdercoated in piano black. This subtle change may go unnoticed by many, but it is enough to personalize the car and distinguish it from the many other Hakos around the world. Inside, the car reveals classic materials from the era. The wood grain steering wheel and shift knob show some signs of wear, but are otherwise in fantastic condition. All the wood trim dash panels are also in great condition, a feature more commonly found in high-end European cars than performance Japanese cars these days. The front and rear seats and both door cards are pristine, with the original brown leather and cloth looking nearly fresh off the showroom floor. Arcenal has added a few select stickers and accessories like Mooneyes floor mats and a Pocari Sweat shift boot, but the car is a pristine example of how to keep a vintage interior in the best possible condition. While the OEM radio won’t actually work in North America due to the difference in broadcast frequencies, the nostalgia of having a fully-complete interior is not worth swapping for a more modern unit. One of Arcenal’s favorite parts of the car is the vintage aroma that comes with its age. 50 40

“The awesome thing about old cars in general is the smell of ‘old.’ You simply don’t get that anymore,” says Arcenal. “It’s just cool. Well, I don’t know if the smell is really cool, but it’s definitely distinct.” But, this isn’t the only Skyline in the Fatlace family. If you spotted the R35 Skyline featuring the Bensopra body kit and GReddy twin-turbo engine package at the 2012 SEMA Falken booth, that car also belongs to Arcenal. In addition, Fatlace employee Felix Marcelino owns a 1974 “Kenmeri” Skyline, which we previously featured before it was purchased from the previous owner. To say this Hakosuka is in good hands is an understatement. As one of the premier examples of the earliest model of Nissan’s Skyline, this is one car we may be lusting over for years to come!

AE86 Triple Threat Three bro thers, three dangerous Corollas
K
Story by Steven Loung | Photography by Kevin Choi
nown around automotive circles as the AE86, the 1986 Toyota Corolla has become legendary amongst tuners and is something of a symbol of the Japanese drift scene, mainly because of the popularity it has gained from being a prominently featured car in the Initial D comic/anime/video game series. Brothers Walter, Billy and Miguel each have one of their own, and each car features an individual style and passion. Walter’s design approach was to keep the classic look while making small enhancements to it. Billy’s is wild with a raw power to match. Miguel’s is sleek with careful and deliberate design and modification choices. All three vehicles have been modded by NTO motorsports, an auto shop the brothers run in their hometown of Beltsville, Maryland. Located about 28 miles southwest of Baltimore, Beltsville is an unlikely hotbed for classic Toyotas, but thanks to the Escotos and their shop, they’ve transformed the sleepy town into a hub of activity for lovers of the Japanese marque. NTO Motorsports is a Toyota specialty shop, so the brothers have seen their fair share of AE86s and other classic Toyotas come through. Between the three of them, they’ve owned and modded dozens of Toyotas just in their spare time. So, if you’re ever in the area and you have even a passing interest in Toyotas, be sure to give them a shout. Their passion and knowledge for the brand is almost unparalleled in the United States, and just for showing up you’ll almost surely be treated to the sight of some very cool cars.

alter Escoto’s AE86 has the most classic look and feel, and every modification done has been made to enhance what the AE86 already brings to the table. Beginning with the exterior, it doesn’t appear that drastic additions are made to the body, but a closer look shows a new Vertex front and rear bumper, RunFree side skirts and CBY wheel flares.

Even the paint job doesn’t really scream out at you. Silver usually stands out quite a bit, but instead the car almost looks white. The shade actually glows in the sun, it’s like the car is radiating an aura of some kind. Coupled with the subtle body enhancements, Walter’s AE86 reminds us of a paladin, or a holy knight ready for battle. As for other modifications, the wheels standing out from the flares are 17-inch LM5s from Complete Custom Wheels wrapped around Yokohama S.drive tires. Sending power to these wheels is a 4.0-liter 1UZ-FE that came from a 1992 Lexus LS 400. It is outfitted with an HKS GT2835R twin turbo setup, an Aeromotive fuel press regulator, twin Tial 50 mm blow-off valves, a Walbro fuel pump and a Godspeed intercooler, all of which amounts to 370 horsepower. With all this power beneath the hood, the car is kept stable with QA1 coil-overs and springs, a Cusco front strut bar and tension rods, an aluminum four link and camber plates from T3. The interior is bare bones, but features custom door and rear panels in addition to Sparco Sprint seats and a Nardi racing wheel. Walter’s AE86 looks like it’s simple, but a close look by anyone who knows shows its true beauty. This is a good lesson to aspiring do-it-yourselfers, because it’s an excellent example that you can have a fantastic result without going too flashy.

B
illy’s AE86 can be best described as a wildfire, not just for its exotic orange paint, but also because of its whopping 542 horsepower. This is a vehicle that can really burn up the streets. The stock engine has been swapped with the legendary 2JZ-GTE and a PT6776 ball bearing Precision turbocharger to give the car even more power. A Ross Racing fuel rail, 1,200 cc fuel injectors, Bosch 044 fuel pump and an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator ensure the thirsty engine stays well hydrated, while the Treadstone intercooler keeps things cool. When dealing with this much power under the hood, a proper exhaust system is just as important. That’s probably why Billy went custom, with a kit made at his NTO Motorsports shop. That is paired with a Drewgo turbo manifold and Megan Racing muffler. To keep himself safe, Billy added a number of suspension upgrades, such as Tokico front

struts, QA1 springs, coil-overs and custom subframe connectors to keep the body sturdy. As far as the exterior goes, the eye-catching hot lava paint job perfectly matches the wildfire that’s waiting to erupt from beneath the hood. The design and color scheme of the J Line wheels complement the paint as well as the Wilwood four-piston brake kit, which do more than their job of bringing 542 horses to a halt. When you open the doors, you’re greeted to a sight similar to Walter’s AE86. A Nardi steering wheel is prominently featured, along with Sparco racing seats. A big difference between the two interiors, however, is the Kenwood head unit, JL Audio amplifiers and Infinity Kappa speakers that Billy installed. Of the three AE86s in this feature, Billy’s is the most powerful and is a great reflection of how incredibly versatile the platform can be as for tuning.

iguel’s AE86 is the last, but definitely not least car included in this list. The work he’s put into his version is more like what you’d see from a professional show car. Miguel managed to keep the spirit and feel of Toyota’s iconic Corolla, but in a way that only a few signature Toyota hallmarks let you know it is an AE86. The most notable change is what’s been done to the body. A RunFree front bumper and fiberglass fenders and Vertex side skirts and rear bumper completely change the way the AE86 looks. The front bumper in particular, gives the car a mean-looking face that’s all the more accented because, unlike his brothers’ AE86s, Miguel’s is a Trueno with the trademark flip-up headlights. The jet black paint job exudes a sense of professionalism in the sense that you know it could wow show judges, but wouldn’t be something out of place in any mall parking lot. It gives the car the rare distinction of being great, both as a daily driver and a kick-ass show vehicle. But when you pop the hood, it’s evident Miguel’s car isn’t just some daily driver. The car features a 1JZ-GTE engine that can pump out 522 horsepower thanks to modifications like Ferrea oversized valves, HKS 272 cams, Titan Motorsports cam gears, a Tial 50 mm blow-off valve, 880 cc fuel injectors and a Haltech Platinum Sport 1000 ECU. Miguel also ensured that his exhaust performance matches the engine, with a similar custom stainless steel exhaust made to Billy’s, paired with an NTO Motorsports down-pipe and a Megan Racing carbon muffler. The car has an automatic transmission, but does feature a one-piece custom driveshaft along with a Detroit TruTrac LSD. On the performance front, suspension upgrades to the front and rear struts and springs using QA1 parts and a Techno Toy Tuning aluminum four link and panhard bar are found.

For Miguel’s aesthetic choices, customized J Line 16RL3 wheels in BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW tires give the car a visual enhancement that matches the car’s seething demeanor. A quick glance inside and the distinct black and green color scheme reminds you of the Degeneration X WWE wrestling team from the mid ’90s. Specifically, reupholstered black leather Sparco racing seats, green Takata harnesses and a green roll cage really stand out.
Adding to the DX feel, the engine bay is painted the same candy green as the cage. Miguel’s AE86 is the most design-focused project, but all three cars have a definite charm and each bring something different to the table. These three different takes also show just how beloved the classic AE86 is. They have near-limitless potential if they are treated with the same amount of passion the Escoto brothers have for Toyotas.

oon “Gentle” Maeng may look like just another young driver on the Formula Drift circuit, but don’t let his appearance fool you. He has been through many ups and downs, and a number of cars too. This year brings a new beginning and a fresh start for the South Korean native. His personal Lucas Oil / Mav TV sponsorships have been renewed, and he is now joined by Nexen Tires to take on the competition, managing his own program with the help of Road Race Engineering. Reliability is key to success in the unforgiving world of drifting, and his latest Nissan S13 chassis has been conceived from the ground up with that in mind. To play with the big boys, a basic four-cylinder engine wouldn’t cut it. Maeng’s team knew this and went a different direction, swapping a Brodix 8.2-liter LSX V8 into the front of the sport coupe and tuning it to put out a whopping 800 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. The power is managed through a dog box transmission and ACT clutch and flywheel, transferring into a brand new Weir Performance rear end. The LSX is the fatty tuna in this sushi combo, so let’s break down exactly how the team at Westech Performance obtained such insane results.

like car, like driver niSSan 240SX (S13) Starting with the block, the Brodix unit is all-aluminum as opposed to the cast-iron version that GM offers, making it lighter and smoother to operate. Brodix also provided some high-strength cylinder heads that, when coupled with JE pistons, keep everything bolted together without fear of catastrophic failure. To mount the engine in the foreign bay they turned to the Sikky motor mount swap kit, designed specifically for S13 applications. The LSX output is good by itself, but for serious gains the team turned to Holley Performance and added the EFI Hi-Ram manifold kit. Consisting of a monstrous plenum, throttle body and fuel rail system, it makes the car look more like a hard-charging rhinoceros than a mildmannered hatchback. The manifold is fed by a custom K&N air filter while JBA Performance headers and a custom two-into-one exhaust by Road Race Engineering handle things on the back side. Finally, a Meziere Enterprises water pump and Lucas engine oils cool down the party during Maeng’s tire-destroying runs. The exterior is unlike any you’ve seen before. No, we didn’t misprint images in this article, you’re seeing it correctly – like the Dark Knight villain Two-Face, there are two sides to this drift machine. Painted by Sam’s Auto Land, the driver side of the car features a red Lucas Oil stripe set while the passenger side is predominantly white and blue for Mav TV. The team carries multiple sets of Varrstoen ES2 wheels coated in black, white or dark ruby, adding to the illusion of two cars in one. The wheels are wrapped in Nexen’s latest N9000 rubber compound, providing insane levels of traction at the front for steering, but just the right amount of give in the rear to light up at a moment’s notice. Under the two-tone paint scheme, Seibon carbon fiber body panels keep things lightweight while the hood has been chopped to make room for the crazy Holley manifold. Formula Drift cars are required to have working headlights for the night events, and this

S13 features lazy eye-style covers with lights suitable for a Johnny Five robot. In the rear, Spyder Auto taillights and an APR wing finish off the look. Drift cars can’t just look good on the surface these days, they also need a kick-ass stance to fit the bill. Enter FEAL’s 411 driftspec suspension, a fully-adjustable shock and spring set to help manage everything from camber to ride height. The coil-overs and custom Bink Industries sway bars let Maeng dial in just the right firmness for each track. On the steering side, Powered by Max steering components allow the front wheels to reach near 90-degree angles.
Drift cred? Yeah, this S13 has got that. Maeng’s car wouldn’t be a full on racer without an interior to match. It has a 1,000 watt sound system with 10 speakers and... Just kidding. The only soundtrack necessary is the one created by the Nexen tires protesting the gusto of the LSX. Aside from a set of Sparco Rev seats, Sparco steering wheel, six-point harness and roll cage, the cabin is pretty much stripped out. Being an old-school guy, Maeng gets by with a few simple gauges from Auto Meter and APEX’i. In motorsports, the fewer distractions there are, the better. This S13 is totally focused, and so is the driver, inside and out. Ask fans
about Maeng, and the same phrase is offered up without reservation: ‘He is the nicest guy in drifting.’ A genuine fan of his supporters, Maeng stays late after each event to sign autographs for anyone and everyone that stops by his pit. But competitors know they can’t be off guard by his kindness, and nice guys don’t always finish last. Like his Lucas Oil Mav TV Nissan S13, there are two sides to Maeng’s personality, and one of them takes drifting very seriously. His passion shows in each run, so be sure to check him out as the Formula Drift series makes its way across the U.S. this year.

former DMCC President,
Eric Belec Interview & Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover
Drifting has come a long way since it first became popular in Canada. The DMCC series has been getting bigger every year despite the economy, lack of sponsors, etc. But former DMCC President Eric Belec has been at the forefront of helping the series continue to grow and be the success it is. How did you first get started in drifting? EB: I first attended a drift demo at Autodrome St-Eustache back in October of 2004. Where Marco Santos and Haig Kanadjian demonstrated their skills and about 15 other "drifters" had a mini contest where they tried to drift around cones – and most could not even link the infield, which by today’s standards is so easy. I was running Onderground-Design, the biggest body kit warehouse and distributor in Canada. The drift cars that were around were not all that pretty and I felt I could help out, so I sponsored a few of the drivers to help their cars look more like the competition cars they are. In 2005, I sponsored the series (called DM1 back then) and I was the sole sponsors beside Torco Oils. In 2006, I sponsored the series again but had to pull out mid-season due to financial issues with the business – so instead I started 58

my own drifting team. The team was branded with my business name and consisted of JF Chiasson and Kevin Grenier. I also was the manager of the team and took on all tasks, from sponsorship proposals to sourcing out transportation. During this time I also started the DriftThing Nights, which is now the biggest drift practice session that takes place almost every weekend at Autodrome St-Eustache. So far it has completed 250 events and had over 400 drivers attend and help master their skills. In 2009 I had to let go of the drift team as I purchased the DMCC series. I felt like I could make positive changes and help the series get even bigger. The previous owner did a great job but I had the drive to make it bigger and be proud of making it the biggest drifting series in the country. I had invested every cent to my name to make this series as big as we know it today.
What were some of the hardest moments being in charge of the DMCC? EB: As an event promoter you want to be successful at everything you set out to do. I have to say the hardest moment in my career was the Downsview Park event in 2009 in Toronto. Trying to form partnerships with businesses as a motorsport many people didn’t know about ended up being very expensive. We weren’t able to catch any deals. From grandstands to cement blocks, we formed the race track out of nothing. Not to mention the condition of the cement was so terrible that we were constantly fixing it. We would lose about $100,000 every time we would come into Toronto. I really wish there would be a drift-ready race track near the centre of Toronto so we could make a huge event in Ontario. There is Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, but it is pretty far and we don't get the same attention from the crowd and media as we do in Quebec. What are some of your best moments? EB: I have two best moments; first was at the Montmagny event in ’09 – it was my first event as promoter. The weather could not have been better, and the event was so packed we almost couldn’t let any more

fans in. The main event had some of the best tandems of the whole season too, so it just made it a great moment in general. Second would be last year at the Victoriaville round. We had over 10,000 people attend – the street parade was a hit, the competition was insane and the weather was great too. All that in a facility we turned into a international-sized race track from the ground up in less than a week. As for the rest of the year it is a empty snow dump. It was such personal satisfaction that it made so many people happy by hosting a drifting event in their city.
Do you still have ideas on how to make the series even bigger? EB: Of course I do! I can do anything I set my mind to, as long as the budget is there to support it. I want to have an event in all the biggest cities in the province where we would have total control over everything like we do in Victoriaville; one big event in Montreal with all the local transportation (subways, buses, etc.), Quebec City, Toronto, Victoriaville, Ottawa and Saguenay. We have knowledge on how to transform an empty parking lot into a crazy drift track that can host 25,000 fans, it’s just a matter of time before we pull it off. We
everybody involved and I am happy to see others being successful because of us. Even if people are trying to abuse your generosity, always stay focused on your own goals and don't let the rest bother you. As promoters we need the very best to make our event successful. It’s not a king of the hill type of game.
already have great plans for 2014, but we have to take things one step at a time. It has been my motto since I started doing business at the age of 19 (I’m 34 now... ouch!). I am a visionary and I know how to achieve my goal. I thank my mom for teaching me this.
What DMCC accomplishment are you most proud of? EB: I am most proud that, despite the drama and struggles since 2004, I have been able to stay the same person. It is far from being easy and is more than a full-time job, taking anywhere from 70 to 90 hours a week. I always do business with respect and honour to everybody I deal with. If a deal is good for both parties then we are all happy and the business is easier the next event. Making friends in your business is always key in my book. I can say that I respect
What are you plans now that you are not the president of the series? EB: My plan is to continue my mission. The group that purchased DMCC has no experience with the operation of a drifting event, especially not the size of DMCC. I have to train them to ensure everybody I work with knows what to do and can master every aspect of our sport and continue the vision I first had when I bought DMCC. I know everything about drifting, marketing and promotions, except actually drifting – I am a promoter after all – so I can be a very valuable asset in the future of DMCC. If that does not end up working out I have other plans to start some non-car events. I am not worried about ‘After DMCC.’ I will either create other events or transform those that need help to succeed. For additional photos, visit pasmag.com/BelecDMCCinterview

question
&answer I’m writing to get some help with the charging system in my Chevy Cavalier. I have a new battery and the stock alternator. The car has 78,000 kms on it. My stereo is powered by a JL e4300 for the midrange and tweeters and a Kicker ZX500.1 for my Kicker Comp R 12s. About a month ago my battery died. When I bought a new one, all my friends said I needed a high-output alternator. But my dad says a high-output alternator will fry my car’s computer and accessories. I want to make sure my new battery lasts a long time and I’m properly charging my amps. What should I do? Jason from Edmonton
Hi, I’m a big fan of the magazine, and read every issue cover to cover. I never thought I’d be writing to you, but here goes. I have a 2009 Mustang and I want to add an amplifier for a subwoofer. The trouble is, the amp and woofer I have only uses RCA inputs, but my head unit doesn’t have RCAs. I think I need a line output converter (LOC) adapter piece to get RCA outputs, that much I have figured out. My question is, what type of RCA cables should I run from my radio to the back of the car? Are the expensive ones worth the money, or can I buy cheaper ones online and be okay? Scott M. via email
Well Jason, you actually have several questions here, so let’s start at the beginning. First thing to remember is that batteries don’t last forever. You don’t say how old your car is, or how old the battery was, but it’s pretty normal to replace your battery every three to five years. Here in the southwest desert we seldom get more than three years from even the best batteries because of the heat. Since you have used the new battery for a month, I’m going to assume the Cavalier’s charging system is working okay. High-output alternators designed for streetdriven vehicles produce more current (amperage) than stock alternators. The voltage is still regulated to the usual 14.4 V, so there is no chance the high-output unit will do any damage to your electronics. The additional current is available on demand. For example, when you have your headlights on, the blower on high, or a deep bass note hits and you have the volume turned up. The alternator simply puts out enough current to keep up with the demand, no more. Frankly, unless you have something else in your car that’s drawing a lot of current, like a set of halogen driving lights for example, the stock alternator should be able to keep up with your audio system demands quite well. So, if I were in your shoes, I’d keep my connections clean and tight, make sure the ground cable from the battery negative to the car chassis is at least eight-gauge copper cable, monitor the voltage of the charging system and just enjoy your ride. Eventually, that stock alternator will wear out – that will be a good time to decide if you want (or need) to upgrade to a high-output unit.
Hi Scott, thanks for the question. We’re glad to hear you enjoy the magazine. My answer might just surprise you. If it was me, I would not run RCAs from the radio to the amplifier. I would run ordinary 18-gauge primary wire that I had transformed into a twisted pair by putting one end in my vice, and the other end in my drill. Or, if you don’t want to be bothered with twisting your wires, you’re still better off with regular zip-cord speaker cable instead of RCA, then put the LOC device as close to the input of the amplifier as possible. If it was me, I’d do away with the LOC completely and build my own voltage divider, but we’ll save that for another time. The reason I would run the primary or speaker cable (instead of RCA) over the noisy chassis of your car is because the speaker wires carry a higher voltage signal, and are in a balanced configuration coming out of the radio. This setup will give you much greater immunity to radiated noise problems and save you money on signal cable to boot. Generic speaker wire is much cheaper than decent RCA cable. For some reason I will never quite understand, everyone thinks the LOC has to go in the front of the car behind the radio. This is completely wrong. If you must use an LOC, it should go right at the input of the amplifier, so you can take advantage of the excellent noise avoidance properties of the already existing amplified output. And, if your LOC has gain controls on it, make sure they are wide open. Signal level matching should be adjusted at the amp, never at the LOC. Good luck with your system.
I recently got a new car, and swapped my dual voice coil Alpine Type S subwoofer and PDX amp out of my old car. I also switched from a sealed to a custom vented box with Plexiglas. The system used to have killer bass, but now there is hardly any and the woofer cone doesn’t bounce like it used to. I’ve checked all my power and grounds and the RCAs. I even plugged my iPod into the amp, but it made no difference. Is this because of the vented box? Erick via email Erick, I don’t believe your problem is with the new woofer box, I think you have the woofer wired wrong. Specifically, I’d bet money that you accidentally wired your woofers voice coils out of phase with each other. This is easy to check, simply pull one wire off of one coil. Then if the woofer has output, that is the problem. You need to reverse the polarity of the wiring to one of the coils to get your bass back. Hopefully you have not damaged the coils by overheating them while trying to get the woofer to play. Good luck with the fix! PAS

Cr ank hat’s the big deal with upgrading or adding better speakers to your system these days? You may think those factory speakers sound good, but what are you really missing? How about information is lost or not even present? Retailers often hear people ask, “Do I need to add more speakers?” “Will a simple OEM upgrade be sufficient?” We will help you understand several choices below as you read on. Typically people want their audio systems louder, but feel it lacks excitement. Ask your retailer the right questions about what works for you and your budget – there’s nothing like cruising down the road enjoying your favorite tune without a worry in the world. Old School to New School Trends Fast forward from the good old days to current trends and we can reflect on how sound has changed. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, we were putting 20 to 60 speakers in a vehicle to make it loud – and it was a lot of fun. I remember Manville Smith’s two-time IASCA Pro Champion Celica in which he used 18 10 mm Audax Tweeters in the front of his vehicle.
Video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjcIbirqXAg From the late '90s to the early 2000s, the less-was-better ideology kicked in. Many switched to a simple four-way setup consisting of a subwoofer, midbass, midrange and tweeter to reproduce sound. USD Audio and Image Dynamics became famous for WaveGuides and compression horns to push their sound. The horn was used in place of traditional midrange and tweeter setups. Look closely and you will still see some floating around at shows. The current trend is leaning towards more speakers (but remember, depending on your 64
» Performance

those speakers!
needs, less can be better). In another shocker, Bullet tweeters are making a huge comeback. Visit a local show and there is even a wild trend of installing speakers right in the vehicle bumpers, which might be a tad extreme. Let’s get Technical Sound travels 1,126 feet per second! You might say “Who cares?” but this is important when building your system to avoid cancellation and work correctly. Do you want your system to be loud? If so, this can be achieved a few ways: doubling your power and/or doubling your speakers. Either one will give your system an extra 3 dB, which is audible to your ears. Most only consider this theory when looking at subwoofers, nonetheless, it is true with your mids and tweeters. Be sure to have the system tuned by a professional and DO NOT adjust anything once it’s set. Always go back to your shop. This allows you to keep everything under warranty, and you will receive much better customer service. Also remember that if you distort your system things can and WILL break. Here are a few fun facts to keep in mind: heat kills speakers! If you burn a voice coil, lead wire, have spider issues, or the glue comes apart it is most likely due to abuse. I always train customers to use this language “excessive use, not abuse!” If you practice this, your speakers will last longer and you won’t have warranty issues with your retailer or manufacturer. Making your decision Your first step should be to set an overall budget. This will vary depending on the type vehicle the speakers are being installed into such as a car, boat, UTV or whatever contraption you may have built or own. If you want a simple “swap out” (known as a direct bolt-in) most consumers choose an affordable dual-cone, two- or three-way coaxial speaker. Car audio manufacturers offer affordable, direct bolt-in speakers to run efficiently from a factory radio that may have a limited amount of amplifier power. If you qualify for the category just described, your shopping experience is done. Nonetheless, most people decide to move up a notch and go with separates. Currently the most common size for separates is a 6.5-inch mid woofer and tweeter combination. A passive crossover allows the
speakers to play specific information. For example, the midrange does not play the tweeter sounds, and the tweeter does not play the midrange sounds. Most component sets can be powered by the factory radio power, but an upgraded amplifier is usually recommended for the best results. Companies such as Focal have moved towards OEM integration keeping high-end sound quality in line with a simple “swap out” as described earlier. In 2013, Focal expanded its Integration line. “Customers like these OEM drop-in products when custom work is not an option in vehicles such as leased, or company owned,” says Duane Pilgrim General Sales Manager of Focal America. Moving on to the big boy category we will take a look at multiple speakers and better sound quality. A good analogy to describe a high end speaker is to think about how BMW offers the 1 Series that is very affordable at $30,000, but then BMW offers a 7 series for more than $100,000. Brands such as Focal, Hybrid Audio, JL Audio, Hertz, MB Quart and others offer more expensive products within their lineups similar to the BMW vehicle analogy. These high-end drivers (speakers) usually have higher power ratings, can tolerate more heat, and offer better warranties when installed by Factory Authorized Retailers. Regardless of your choice(s) listed above, most will sound better than your current vehicles factory OEM speakers. Conclusion Keeping things in perspective, you can consider a few factors in deciding your personal speaker upgrade. Do I want to replace an OEM driver with a direct fit replacement such as a 6x9 in a Toyota or 5x7 for a Ford? Maybe your vehicle has that separate midrange and tweeter installed from the factory, so you may want a “direct fit upgrade kit” like a six-inch component set. Taking things to the extreme you can opt to do a custom installation with oversized drivers and/or add additional speakers! Consider your budget, shop wisely, pick a good retailer and you will have great results. Happy driving and stay tuned…

OKC169 Coaxial Speaker review By Garry Springgay
W
e get a lot of really cool high-end speakers to test and review, but once in a while it’s good to have a look at a few less exotic, more fundamental staples in the car audio speaker world. F or many years, the most popular type of speaker was the standard – almost universally used – 6x9-nch coaxial design. Even now, this ubiquitous size is a mainstay in everyone’s line up of coaxial-type speakers and for good reason. With roughly the same cone area as a typical eight-inch woofer and better sensitivity than a typical 6.5-inch midrange, the 6x9 is a great compromise for vehicles without a subwoofer or high-powered amplific tion. T hese are also great speaker choices for folks wanting good sound on a tight budget. In this review, we’re going to take a look at one of the better entry-level 6x9s, the MB Quart O nyx O KC 169. mbquart.com
With a suggested retail price of just over a hundred bucks and the legendary MB Quart name behind them, the OKC169 coaxial speakers are a great place to begin your system. The OKC169 speakers are built with some pretty nice features not usually available at this end of the price spectrum. Featuring higher end construction techniques such as low resonance composite baskets and thermal-formed, mica-filled polypropylene cones, the entry level MB Quarts are pretty impressive. And the good stuff doesn’t stop there; they also have 25 mm Teteron-treated silk dome tweeters, UV resistant butyl rubber surrounds, a -12 dB second order crossover network and a Polyswitch for tweeter over-current protection. The voice coils are one inch in diameter and wound on an aluminum former. The OKC169s come with mounting hardware, composite plastic grilles, and one-year warranty.

MB Quart OKC169 Coaxial Speaker
Listening
FREQUENCY RESPONSE
Up early in the morning with “fresh ears,” I mount the OKC169s in my listening room baffles and arm myself with a stack of CDs and a cup of strong coffee. I know the OKC169s don’t need a lot of power to play at respectable levels, and I set all my systems crossovers to flat and begin my listening. I immediately note a strong presence and clarity in the midrange, and really good intelligibility. On a few tracks, predominately with horns or acoustic guitar, there may be a bit of over-accentuation of the mids, but the system is never harsh or strident. Bass response is pretty decent too, with nice tone and articulation. The Teteron tweeters produce a smooth top end, with good detail and no bite or harshness. Keeping in mind this is a pair of coaxials that cost less than some people spend on a pair of sneakers, the MB Quart Onyx 6x9s do a great job. They have a pleasant sound, good clarity and will work with virtually any OEM head unit Compustar.pdf 1 7/8/2013 3:05:18 PM or amplifier up to about 50 watts.
Conclusion If you need a good sounding, inexpensive pair of speakers to replace the OEM junk in your car, the MB Quart Onyx series deserves some real consideration. They are built with high-quality components and are great performance for value. If you’d like more information on the Onyx series, or any of the other MB Quart products, check them out online at www.MBQuart.com. For additional photos, visit pasmag.com/MBQonyxSpeaks

10TW3 10” Subwoofer review By Garry Springgay

hen it comes to building shallow woofers, I thought I’d seen just about every way possible. T hat was until I saw the new JL A udio 10T W3-D4 subwoofer. T he latest shallow woofer design to come out of JL A udio’s Miramar, F lorida facility is a thing of beauty to look at, and an equally impressive bit of ‘out of the box’ design and engineering. T he all new 10T W3-D4 is a dual four-ohm coil woofer built around several patented technologies and will be shipping by the time you read this. T his high performance shallow woofer will carry a suggested retail price of $349.95 (USD).

Features To build a 10-inch shallow woofer that will work in enclosure depths as little as 3.25 inches, JL Audio took a clean slate approach when they designed the 10TW3-D4. The goal was a woofer that could be mounted not only in a shallow enclosure, but also one that also works with an absolute minimum of total airspace. It also had to provide long excursion, deep bass and excellent sound quality while handling 400 watts of continuous power. To accomplish these goals, JL has developed a unique cone body based on patented technology called a “Concentric Tube” structure. The genius of the design places the long-throw voice coil assembly directly beneath the speaker dust cap. This high-mounted coil al-

lows the engineers to use a fullsize motor structure to drive the coil, but the magnet assembly is moved much closer to the cone than on a traditional woofer – it’s actually inside the basket, rather than hanging off the bottom like you’d normally see. The result of this component shifting is a very shallow woofer, but one that retains a full-size double stacked Strontium ferrite motor and even greater excursion than JL Audio’s W3v3 series. Brilliant! Technically speaking, the 10TW3-D4 is built on a cast aluminum alloy basket that houses the entire motor assembly. Because the pole is not vented, the back of the basket fits flush against the inside wall of the enclosure, further decreasing mounting depth requirements. The basket uses four tabs (or ‘ears’) for mounting with each tab furnishing two mounting screw locations. The idea here is to make the remainder of the diameter of the woofer as small as possible, which allows them to be mounted closer to enclosure boundaries or to another woofer, making it easily adaptable to really tight spaces. The entire moving assembly is unique in that it’s constructed as a complete sub-assembly

before being fitted into the basket. A normal woofer begins with a motor and basket assembly, then the spider and voice coil are fitted followed by the cone and surround and finally the dust cap. Not so for this new JL Audio woofer. Using the patented Concentric Tube structure, first the JL Audio woofer has the dust cap, cone, surround, voice coil and progressive type spider built as a unit, which is finally fitted to the basket and magnetic motor. This approach provides great precision in parts alignment, better electrical connectivity and is simply easier to build. But the 10TW3-D4 isn’t simply a batch of cleverly-assembled parts. Indeed, the quality of the components used in the woofer are also top notch. From the top
trim plate that is designed to accept an optional mesh grille, to the rubber surround, the mineralfilled poly cone, the eight-layer copper coil wound on a Kapton former and the aluminum alloy dust cap that serves as part of the woofer’s cooling circuit, the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 deservedly screams high-end. Amplifier connections are made via clearlymarked and solidly-mounted spring-loaded terminals on each basket spoke that easily accept 10-gauge wire. Thanks to the innovative design, the woofer’s tinsel leads are solidly epoxied to the inside of the concentric tube structure, instead of being made to flex with the suspension. There is even a pre-fitted foam sealing gasket applied to the frame mounting surface to ensure a good seal to the enclosure baffle.
Listening It’s no secret that JL Audio makes some of the most musical sounding subwoofers available. For my evaluation, Manville Smith, JL Audio’s VP of Marketing, sent along one of its small, well-made sealed enclosures. And I do mean small – it’s a mere 0.5 cubic-feet in internal volume! I have high expectations of the 10TW3-D4 sitting down to audition it, but I am worried the tiny enclosure will choke off its performance. But I’m quickly shown the sonics are nothing short of excellent. The bass output is smooth and deep and has that excellent musicality JL Audio is famous for. Kick drum notes have impact and accuracy that I didn’t expect from such a small-sized woofer system. The timbre of the

bass is almost perfect, and it makes listening to the details in drum and bass work a lot of fun. My reference system is equipped with an amplifier capable of easily exceeding the woofer’s recommended 400 watt maximum power levels, and I have to admit I did that (albeit briefly) a few times during this two-hour session; but the 10TW3-D4 took it all in stride without complaint. I don’t generally make absolute statements in my reviews, but I can say with all sincerity this is the best sounding 10-inch woofer I’ve ever heard in a one half cubic foot box. The laws of physics always apply, and where I did find the system wanting a bit was in overall SPL. Part of that can be blamed on how good it sounds, because it simply makes me
JL Audio 15.05.indd 3
want to turn it up! The 10TW3D4 probably gives up a couple of dB of overall output to a standard 10-inch with a 50% larger enclosure, but then you have a standard-depth woofer in a bigger box, and aren’t solving the problem this woofer is so incredibly good at addressing.
On The Bench The next morning after the woofer is cooled and normalized, I move into the lab and fire up my Klippel analyzer to measure the small signal parameters of the subwoofer. I’m happy to report that my measured data is within a few percent of the published specifications, which says a lot about the level of quality control JL Audio has in their Florida-based facility.

The JL Audio W3 subwoofers have earned a reputation for excellent sound quality, tonal accuracy and reliability. This shallow version appears to not only be able to uphold that tradition, but perhaps build the reputation of providing quality bass in places nobody expected a true high performance woofer system to ever fit. If you are tight on space, but demanding when it comes to the quality of your music, drop by your local JL Audio dealer and ask to audition one of these babies for yourself. You can thank me later. Phoenix Gold
RX112 12 Subwoofer review by Garry Springgay
T
he new Phoenix Gold R Series of subwoofers may be priced as entry level products, but compared to the competition they are ruggedly overbuilt, so their performance is anything but entry level. T o have a closer look at these woofers for ourselves, we asked the good folks over at Phoenix Gold to send us an example of what they are about, and shortly after we received a sample in the from of an R X112. T he R X112 is a 12-inch single voice coil woofer with an advertised impedance of four ohms and power handling of 200 watts. T he R series woofers are also available in dual four ohms voice coil configu ations. T he woofer we received has a suggested retail price of $159.99 (USD) and comes with a one-year limited warranty. phoenixgold.com

Cosmetics After unpacking the RX112 I am rather perplexed with my first impression of the cosmetics. As first blush, the woofer is quite plain looking with a matte black poly cone and a matte black trim ring. The only contrast on the face of the woofer is the Phoenix Gold and RX logos on the cone and highlighted in a bright silver color. As I look closer at the woofer, I begin to understand what the designer originally intended. The cone is not too visually exciting, but it is designed with a deep trough in the center that provides additional strength and rigidity. Then I notice the trim ring is also designed to completely hide the mounting screws for a clean finished appearance. So, I begin to see the beauty in the design after all.

On the business end of the woofer, a custom-tooled rubber motor cover finishes off the magnet very nicely.

Features Getting into the internal workings is one of my favorite parts of my job. I enjoy seeing different engineering approaches to solving common problems, and I seldom look at any new product without learning something. Looking at the design and construction of the RX112 woofer, I note a few things you don’t see on too many entry-level woofers, like venting the lower section of the cone above the voice coil for better cooling, or the heat shrink-covered tinsel leads that are connected to very sturdy spring-loaded terminals. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bent the terminal mounting tabs on woofers when simply connecting the wires. You won’t do that on this woofer. Other features worth noting are the full two-inch diameter copper voice coil (wound on a Kapton former), a quality rubber surround instead of the more economical foam, linear poly-cotton spider and a vented and machined back plate.

Listening After the obligatory break-in process is complete, I install the Phoenix Gold RX112 into a 1.25 cubic-foot sealed enclosure. According to the owner’s manual, the RX112 can be used in sealed enclosures ranging in volume from 0.75 to 1.5 cubic feet. The manual also says the woofer can be used in vented enclosures from 1.5 to 2.25 cubic feet. This put my test enclosure right in the middle of the range. Connecting the woofer system to my amp and getting the levels adjusted, I begin my listening session with the crossover on the subwoofer set at 100 Hz, -12 dB/octave. With these settings, the woofer has a lot of output and a bit of a tubbiness to the sound. A few tracks later, I decide to shift the crossover frequency down to 80 Hz. This small change made quite

a difference – the RX112 sounded more musical with better definition. The sound of the woofer is pleasant and it still has prodigious output for a single four-ohm 12. During the course of my session, I note my enclosure choice may have been a bit small for the best output of very deep bass notes as some of the really low stuff (below 40 Hz) was a bit laid back. This was most noticeable on jazz and classical recordings, so I’m not sure how important it will even be to the typical R Series user. I drive the RX112 pretty hard a few times during my session, and come away very impressed its ability to handle brief periods of power that were over its conservative 200 watt rating. When all is said and done, I feel the woofer has respectable low frequency output and handles transients – like kick drum and plucked bass – very well. It is very
competitive when it comes to other woofers in this segment of the market.
On The Bench After my listening session is over and the woofer normalizes overnight, I connect it to my Klippel analyzer and measure the Thiele-Small parameters. My measured data is a bit off of the published specifications, but probably within the normal window of tolerance that is associated with subwoofer parameters. A look at my measured specs indicates to me that this woofer is going to perform best in a sealed enclosure, but if you are willing to give up some additional low bass extension for more output, you could give a vented design a go. It’s not my cup of tea for this woofer, but it may be exactly right for you.
Conclusion The Phoenix Gold RX112 subwoofer is a serious contender in the hotly-contested entry level market. It has plenty of output and can be mated to a smaller amplifier to save even more money. With a bit of tuning and the right enclosure, this woofer may surprise the owners of more expensive gear. Just make sure your amplifier has an adjustable frequency low pass crossover, spend a bit of time tuning and use the largest volume enclosure that you have space for. With its rugged design and very conservative power rating, it should be a reliable woofer through years of use and abuse. XTR3700.1D Amplifier review by Garry Springgay

hen it comes to delivering the kind of power required for truly hardcore SPL enthusiasts, few car audio marques carry the weight of the O rion brand. A nd although the company has changed ownership several times in its history and was a bit of a wallfl wer for a while, things are much different now. With a new home based in Miami, F lorida, the company is excited about producing products that will bring the O rion name back to its legendary roots. Based on high performance and well-engineered power amplifier that made them the brand to beat in SPL circles, the company is delivering new products we haven’t seen from them in a while. O ne such amp is the powerhouse XTR 3700.1D, a class-D monoblock amplifie designed to perform everywhere, from SPL contest lanes to your daily driver. orioncaraudio.com

Features The Orion XTR3700.1D looks very similar to the old school Orion amps that made the company world-renowned 20 years ago. A beautiful black-anodized brushed aluminum heat sink is accented by silver logos reminiscent of the CNC-machined look of its predecessors. Trim plates hide the controls and connections and are easy to install and remove. And there is no chance of this amp being confused for a wallflower; the power output is

rated at 1,500, 2,500 and 3,700 watts into four, two and one ohm, respectively. The XTR3700.1D is a fairly big and heavy amplifier, measuring 19 inches long, 9.25 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall, tipping the scales at over 18 pounds. As is the norm with this type of amp, the connections and controls are found on opposite ends of the extruded heat sink. One end houses the low level signal inputs and outputs as well as the controls for gain,
subsonic filter, bass EQ, low pass crossover and a variable phase control. The subsonic filter is controlled via a simple on/off switch and provides a fixed frequency filter at 25 Hz. The crossover has an adjustment range from 15 Hz to 250 Hz, with a -18 dB slope. Bass EQ is centered at 45 Hz and there is up to 18 dB of boost available. On the opposite end of the amp, beefy power connectors accept 1/0 gauge cable,

which you will need if you plan to use this amp’s full potential. The speaker terminals accept up to eight gauge cable and, with this much power available, it wouldn’t be a bad idea. Looking inside the XTR3700.1D reveals a well-made product, with a clean, organized layout. Surface-mount parts are used extensively in the front end, and Orion’s proprietary PRS power supply incorporates six individual toroids, one for each pair of high-current MOSFET power supply devices. For energy storage, the power supply section employs 10 3,300 µF high temperature capacitors and the secondary gets its energy reserves from a bank of eight 820 µF 200 V caps. From the heavy copper traces on the double-sided PCB to the TO-247 case size transistors, everything inside the amp looks like it is designed to handle a ton of current with good reliability.
2 OHM POWER vs THD 100 Hz 14.4V Batt
LISTENING In my listening room, the setup for the XTR3700.1D is fairly simple. With the amp connected to a very large power supply and a stout pair of four-ohm, 15-inch woofers paralleled together and mounted in sealed enclosures, I set the crossover for about 80 Hz and leave the bass boost flat. Since I am using a sealed enclosure and woofers with very low Fs, I leave the subsonic filter off. Man, I never get tired of having a lot of power in my listening system. When you have enough power to get the volume you want – without ever getting near the amplifiers or speaker limit – listening to music can be a completely different experience. Although the XTR3700.1D is fully capable of driving one-ohm loads all day long. Even with my two-ohm setup I can tell you this amplifier has power to spare. Even at really loud levels I don’t come close to over-driving the Orion amp, although I think my woofers have all they can handle. With a good woofer system and this much power on tap, you can simply sit back and enjoy any music at pretty much any volume. The bass is nice and tight with good definition and control. Kick drum beats have the sort of impact

you expect at a concert and, with what seems like an unlimited supply of clean power available, the listening experience is almost intoxicating. I can see this amplifier having a lot of appeal for folks who like to drive their car daily while still contending in SPL wars on the weekends. One note of caution, however: this kind of serious power comes with equally serious current requirements, so be prepared to add some high-performance charging capability to your ride.
ON THE BENCH After my listening session is complete, I move the amp to my test bench to measure the actual performance specs. I’m happy to report the Orion amp easily exceeds all of its published power ratings when tested at 14.4 V. Power efficiency is about average for this big of an amplifier and, as I suspect, the current draw at full chat into one ohm is a very meaningful 413 amperes. Now you know why I strongly suggest a high-output alternator and a pair of batteries to get the maximum performance, especially if you are planning to run a one-ohm load. By comparison, the amp will deliver over 1,700 watts into four ohms, only drawing 138 amps.
MD Audio-Orion XTR3700.1D 15.05.indd 4
Conclusion I’m fairly impressed with this new Orion effort, which is the first one I’ve seen in a couple of years. It’s nice to see the company’s philosophy is a return to its roots and the high-performance products that were responsible for creating the legend in the first place. The XTR3700.1D is a well-made, solid-built subwoofer amplifier that, if properly supplied with the current it wants, will provide you with years of great sound – and maybe even a shelf full of SPL trophies. Talon Brake Calipers
Get strong, dependable stopping power
By Jordan Lenssen

ost people know how important a strong and effective brake kit is when upgrading your vehicle. Your control and overall speed depends heavily on your braking. More importantly, it’s an area of your car that you never want to have to worry about – ever.
There are a number of kits on the market, but the group over at Hawk Performance recently introduced an impressive new line of Talon Performance brake calipers, and these aren’t your standard stoppers. The core performance of the Talon caliper comes from its bulletproof construction – these things are made to withstand anything you throw at them. Foremost, the pistons are made from solid 303 bar stock stainless steel, giving you reliable, strong stopping power compared to conventional aluminum pistons, which tend to fade in high heat. The machined billet aluminum caliper body saves on weight and is loaded with hightemperature dust seals throughout, keeping your internals grime-free and properly lubricated at all times. But what makes the Hawk calipers better than the competition? The complete system offers as much as 55% better clamping power over original equipment – and that’s
102 » Performance
a lot of bite. The three-piston caliper setup is ideal for performance street use and, although it might not sound as strong as a five- or six-piston option, take a look at some of the top performance cars and there are plenty of them using three- and four-piston options. Best of all, the Talon performance calipers don’t take up as much space as larger versions, meaning you avoid OEM clearance issues so you can run smaller wheels and/or stay clear of unwanted size upgrades. The entire system is designed for ease of use with top-level performance. Not only does the kit bolt directly on to the stock mounting points, but it works seamlessly with existing master cylinders and factory ABS systems. Speaking on the release of Hawk’s newest addition to its performance brake lineup, Sales and Marketing Director Andrew Hisey spoke on the idea behind the new Talon calipers.
“Demanding customers want a performance upgrade that is easy to install and dramatically increases the stopping power of their vehicles,” he says. “Whether for sports car fitments to rein in horsepower, or light truck and off-road applications to manage payloads or challenging terrain, our new Performance Brake System will help these vehicles stop as well as they go.” The kit is designed to function as an effective upgrade solution for performance driving on the streets, in the dirt, and even frequent towing with moderate payloads. Built for most any performance vehicle platform, the Talon calipers and Performance Brake System is also available for late model Corvettes, Mustangs, Challengers, Chargers and Chrysler 300 offerings, as well as Chevrolet, Ford and Jeep trucks. It offers significant savings over other bulkier big brake kits, and from calipers to pads and rotors, are designed to give you strong, long-term performance. They’re definitely worth checking out, and you can do so at www.HawkPerformance.com. For additional photos, visit pasmag.com/HawkBrakeSystem

I wash clothes all the time, sometimes three times a week. Dirty clothes give me the creeps.” On a scale of 1 to 10, how wild are you in the bedroom?
Absolutely a 10, I like clothes being ripped off, flung every which way, biting, nail scratching, pulling, grabbing – whoa! Are you as turned on as me right now? What do you wear to bed? Why? Nothing,
the best way to let your body breath in the morning air is to have nothing in the way. Who are your heroes in real-life? Why? My parents. They
are my true inspiration. They showed me that no matter where you come from, you can surpass any obstacle and become something great. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
X-Ray vision. No matter where I am, I always wonder what kind of underwear people are wearing – if any! With any spotlight job, you are looked upon as a role model. What advice do you give out to aspiring models?
Be yourself, forever and always. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t be something, because with your drive you can
be anything. You could be the next top model, maybe even someone I could look up to. I never let anyone kill my dreams, and I have more everyday. After all, even the big stars had to start somewhere. Do you have any shout outs?
Don’t forget to follow me on my social networks and my website www.iheartmichelle.com! I post regular updates and would love to share them with you. I would also like to thank my family for the support they’ve given me throughout my life. Mom and dad, thank you for giving me inspiration. My brothers, thank you for making me tough and loving me. To my friends, thank you for the compliments, advice and love. My “Hooker” Victor for giving me support when I needed it the most and allowing me to be part of the Emergency Hookers Towing family, it's been a fun journey so far. To my fans, thank you so much! You inspire me every day to keep going and I promise to keep on delivering hot sexy me until the end of time.
