DENNIS MERTZANIS’ FD HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE STORY BY JACOB LEVETON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON & JOSE CHOCAR
A
t the 2012 Formula D Season final at Irwindale Speedway, Dennis Mertzanis had a major crash in qualifying that caused significant damag to his Fuel Culture Kenda Tires Nissan S13 chassis. While the motor was salvageable, the rest of the car was considered a write-off. As planning began for the 2013 season, Mertzanis was at a crossroads. He had a VQ35-powered S14 in his stable that could be refreshed but was significantly underp wered for Formula D, and he wasn’t sold on making it his 2013 competition car. Fortunately, aftermarket tuner ARK Performance maintains its headquarters just a few miles from Mertzanis’s shop in Ontario, Calif., and was contemplating building a drift car with one of its previous 20
SEMA showpieces. ARK Performance has built several cars for the Hyundai booth at SEMA, but has never campaigned any of them in a competitive motorsport. After some discussions with Mertzanis, the decision was made to enter Formula D. Luckily for ARK Performance, Mertzanis is not only a talented driver but also a Hyundai engineer. In previous years, Rhys Millen campaigned a Genesis, but in his absence the ARK car would be the only Gen-coupe on grid. First for the team was building the car using ARK’s own product suite. For the engine — a header, down-pipe, test pipe, engine mounts and custom exhaust (all from ARK) were added to bump the power. The inside of the motor was pulled apart and stroked using a Brian Crower kit, which pushes displacement to four liters,

while JE Pistons and a custom Garrett turbocharger kit help give the car 590 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. Power pushes through a Spec Stage 4 clutch and Cusco two-way LSD to keep the tires spinning. Outside, a full ARK SFX aero kit is fitted to the car. The kit includes new front and rear bumpers, wide front fenders, rear over fenders and a carbon hood. In addition, a CFX carbon grill, carbon trunk and side skirts give the car an aggressive look. The exterior is coated in white BASF paint to give the livery the cleanest possible canvas. Featuring Arki, the Team ARK mascot, the scheme accentuates the sleek and stylish lines of the Genesis coupe while highlighting Kenda tires, Konig wheels and Koru Works — the key team sponsors. Rounding out the look of the car are gold 18-inch staggered Konig Milligram wheels, which have been tried and true for Mertzanis over the past three seasons. StopTech brakes provide the necessary braking power, and Parts Shop MAX coil-overs and suspension arms help keep the geometry in check during drifts. ARK front and rear sway and strut bars also add rigidity to the chassis, controlling body roll for maximum power transfer as the car gets sideways. The biggest changes inside the car are the custom Formula D-spec roll cage, RMR carbon dash, center console and a pair of Sparco racing seats. Takata harnesses keep Mertzanis in

Aside from the ARK Performance custom wiring harness, an AiM Sports steering wheel and Safecraft fire suppression system, the interior is relatively simple. Mertzanis and the ARK Performance team have big goals. Story & Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover
hen you hear the name Pat Cyr, the fi st thought that comes to mind is him flyin sideways in his AE86 Corolla. When Scion Canada decided to get its new FR-S involved in the DMCC series, it was only fittin to have a Toyota supporter like Pat on board as their driver. Fast forward and after months of hard work and late nights at his newly-opened shop, Cyrious Garageworks, Cyr’s FR-S started to take shape. Trying to make his FR-S look different from the flood of othe ones coming out, Cyr designed and fabricated a custom rear spoiler and front splitter he dubbed the ‘Meat Slicer.’ Paired with huge ML24 wide body flare and a matte paint job, it gives it a mean look that fi s his style. The car is slammed using three-way HSD adjustable coilovers and rides on Work Meister 17x9.5 wheels and Yokohama S.drive tires to get as much speed as possible. It is a DMCC car so the interior is all race car. The Cyrious Garageworks custom roll cage and stitch-welded chassis

is all business, while Sparco takes care of the man with his steering wheel, seat and harness. AEM gauges help monitor the vitals. When the car appeared ready it went out for his world debut, while Pat was still planning the final stages of the project. I was unveiled at the Montreal International Auto Show and it wasn’t long before everybody was talking about it. After that it went on a journey to travel the Canadian auto show circuit with the rest of the Scion lineup. With the car out on tour, Pat’s efforts turned to findin more sponsors and decide what parts were needed to finish the build. He e en made the trip out to the SEMA show with the goal of landing new sponsors and partnerships. Upon arriving home it was time for him to start work on the motor. He had a few options in terms of swaps, but he wanted to see how far he could push the stock engine since it hadn’t really been tested yet. To get the power necessary for competitive drifting, Pat added a Garrett GTX 3067R Turbo and all the

necessary parts to keep the engine running strong, including parts from Darton, Manley, Mishimoto, ARP and Ferrea with Eneos Oil. As a member of Scion Racing, Pat also became the host of the new Scion Tuner Challenge. Stepping in front of the camera, he travels all across Canada with three teams to compete in various challenges. When Pat’s FR-S finally made its way back home there was hardly any time to finish the car before the fi st round
of the DMCC. The Cyrious Garageworks team went hard to work installing the engine and doing the final prep and installation. With the car buttoned up it was starting to become a proper drift machine, but it was still far from being competition-ready. Pat took it to OnPoint Dyno to get the car tuned and put down a healthy 380 whp. He had a few issues getting the car 100% ready for
competition, so he was forced to skip both rounds one and two of the DMCC. All was not lost though, as he competed with his trusty AE86 and made it to the podium in both events, adding funds to his FR-S project account. With the work complete, Cyr’s FR-S made its competition debut in round three, quickly grabbing an insane amount of attention. Unfortunately, engine issues would sideline the car and Cyr was unable to qualify. They weren’t able to figure ou the exact cause, but after a complete teardown it was ready for round four. Pat and his team are still learning the car but right off the bat he s been looking sharp in the FR-S. The car is running solid and it shows when he smokes the tires. As with any new drift car, there are growing pains. Cyr is currently in that stage, doing plenty of R&D to see what works and what doesn’t. The hard work has already shown, and once he’s content with the setup there’s little doubt this FR-S will be even more competitive than his old AE86 – and for anyone else on track that’s a very scary thing.

STORY BY JACOB LEVETON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON & RANDY LY
In the previous Formula D season, Yokohama Tire supported Tyler McQuarrie’s GoPro Chevrolet Camaro, Pat Mordaunt’s APEXi Lexus SC430 and Tony Brakohiapa’s Ebay Motors Ford Mustang. They finished 14th, 27th and 28th in the standings, respectively. Looking to improve its results this year, Yokohama shifted gears and only resigned Mordaunt, but added Toshiki Yoshioka’s Subaru BRZ and Mike Essa’s BMW E46 into the mix. Historically, Yokohama Tires and its drivers have eight Formula D wins — Sam Hubinette has five followed by Rhys Millen with two and Yoshioka with one. The supplier has also celebrated 20 races on the podium. These totals put it second in victories behind Falken and third in podiums behind Falken and Hankook, proving the tires are as competitive as any on grid. Adding a win in Palm Beach and Essa's podium at the Motegi SuperDrift Challenge at the Long Beach Grand Prix this year, Yokohama is already building on its totals.

In just his first season
with the E46, Essa has been one of the biggest surprises of the season, earning a win in Palm Beach and two top-five qualifying e° orts in the first half of the season to go with his second-place finish at Motegi. Essa’s previous highest finish was fourth in Atlanta in 2010; last year it was 12th. Entering the season, Essa was looking for his first podium and top-10 overall finish. With a win under his belt and sitting in third in the standings at the halfway point, Essa is already exceeding his expectations. He didn’t originally plan to contend for the championship, but his goals remain to improve on his overall position last season and to continue developing the car. Carrying 700 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque (as profiled in our June 2013 issue) certainly helps his cause, but Essa’s skill has truly developed to make him a respected top-10 driver on the Formula D roster.

While Mordaunt and the APEXi-supported team
had high hopes entering the season after a top-eight finish at the 2012 finale in Irwindale, the results in 2013 haven’t met their expectations. With 850 horsepower on tap from the twin-turbo 3UZ-FE motor, the car has looked capable of competing with the fastest cars on grid. Mordaunt is the sole returning driver to the Yokohama roster from 2012, and the only driver on the team without a career podium under his belt. Developing through grassroots drifting series with a drifting-only background, he became a fan favorite in FD before even before his 21st birthday. Now of legal age, Mordaunt is looking forward to his first career podium and finishing the season strong in the lone OEM-powered Lexus SC430.

As the only current Yokohama driver with a win under his belt (Las
Vegas 2008 in his Corolla AE86), Yoshioka knew 2013 would be a rebuilding year. With a brand new self-built chassis and a very limited team, Yoshioka is essentially operating as a privateer this season. He is also the only driver on the roster with experience at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Overall, the team plans to continue developing the car into a competitive chassis for future seasons, utilizing the Tomei-built EJ257 crate motor more commonly found in the Subaru STI. Yoshioka’s experience in both D1 Grand Prix and Formula D make him a serious threat to his opponents in tandem battles — and someone many drivers would rather not compete against. Look for Yoshioka and his team to improve through the remainder of the season and become a staple of the top-16 drivers in 2014 and beyond.

anner Foust is now as recognizable for his work behind the wheel of a rallycross car as he is for the television hosting, drifting and stunt work that started his career. That’s thanks, in large part, to Andreas Eriksson and the Olsbergs MSE squad – a team on the leading edge of a rallycross revolution that is reimagining motorsport – and has helped make international racing stars out of drivers like Foust, Brian Deegan and Ken Block. “Andreas is defini ely Mr. Rallycross,” says Foust, who has competed around the world with the team since debuting in a Ford Fiesta at the 2009 X Games. “Even when we go to France to race with 120 cars competing, the OMSE team is known as one of the best in the world.” Olsbergs MSE was officially cre ed as a focused motorsport company in 2009 when historic Swedish industrial company Olsbergs merged together with Eriksson’s Motor Sport Evolution (MSE). Before that, the industrial giant Olsbergs was a frequent racing sponsor whose business holdings concentrated on foundry works, hydraulics and electronics, while Eriksson’s MSE operation 32

was the fun sideline in a portfolio of diverse companies and real estate holdings. Together, with Eriksson as CEO, they have become a force in motorsport, competing internationally in the European Rallycross Championship and the Global Rallycross Championship – in the U.S. and with X Games around the world. The company now has dual headquarters with operations in Sweden and the United States — a tidy shop in Huntington Beach, California, that opened just last year. The team runs six top-spec, 600 horsepower, all-wheel drive cars in the 2013 GRC Supercars field, which was out at 18-strong at X Game Los Angeles this season. Four of them are in the
top fi e of the points standings, including Foust, Deegan, championship leader Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen, and Swedish rally star Patrik Sandell. (The other is Block, a former Olsbergs MSE driver whose own Hoonigan Racing Team built and operates his Ford Fiesta). On top of that, Olsbergs MSE has developed, and runs every one of the 10 purpose-built GRC Lites racers — a spec class that debuted at the start of the U.S. competition season this year as a development series. There are technicians and mechanics from all over the world on the team, but a quick walk through the paddock on race weekend shows no shortage of Swedish talent imported from the homeland.
Even when the Global RallyCross Championship is racing in the heart of America’s NASCAR country, the paddock has a decidedly international feel. It’s more than Euro-style skinny jeans and fancy trainers — though there’s some of that. It has become something of an insider’s joke to note how many blondes there are: young men, lanky and blue-eyed, with tousled hair and rosy cheeks. And the language they’re speaking isn’t the clipped British lilt of Formula One, the wide Aussie vowels of V8 Supercars or the German of DTM. It’s Swedish: the unlikely language of rallycross. “I understood about two words less when I started with OMSE four years ago than I do now,” says Foust. “The Performance

mechanics taught me all the dirty words right off the bat and that’s still what I remember.” On race weekends, Eriksson is omnipresent, somehow managing to be everywhere at once. At the start line, he’s checking in with his drivers. In the spotter’s stand on the roof of the grandstands, he’s shouting out instructions on the radio. In the pits, he’s flat on his back under a ord Fiesta or GRC Lites racer. “Andreas has always been very passionate about winning, which is a very contagious thing,” observes Foust. “It’s a necessity for a team owner.” A former championship rally driver, Eriksson’s fi st trip to the United States came in 2009 when he drove a Ford Fiesta as part of a factory backed twocar effort on the famed Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Two-time World Rally Champion Marcus Grönholm drove the other car. “We did it because we could. Marcus was second (to Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima). I crashed twice,” says Eriksson, adding, “That’s an achievement in itself.” The nickname Eriksson brought to America on that fi st trip — “The Swedish Cowboy,” an allusion to his quick-draw temperament and don’t-givea-damn swagger, is all but forgotten now that he’s become such a fixture in the .S. scene. But it remains apt because it describes what it takes to assume the kind of risks necessary to transform a personal passion project into a global force in motorsport. On an ESPN television broadcast recently, a NASCAR commentator likened Eriksson the Roger Penske or Rick Hendrick of rallycross. Foust has been a steadfast partner as Olsbergs MSE and the sport of rallycross have grown together both in Europe and the United States. He and his agent first met with Eriksson and Ford during the lead-up to the 2009 Race to the Clouds campaign, proposing that the high-horsepower AWD Fiestas originally built for rallycross in Europe — a sport that didn’t yet exist in the United States – would be the perfect 34

vehicle for X Games. “We started pushing to let us use them at X Games and everybody said ‘No,’” Foust recalls now. But Ford was faced with a problem to which the X Games offered an interesting solution. With the Fiesta set for the U.S. launch in 2010, Ford needed to figure out how to make the vehicle attractive in a country where bigger has always been better; and where small cars have a serious image problem as insipid little grocery getters. And so Ford eventually allowed the X Games run, as long as it didn’t hurt the Pikes Peak effort — then seen as the primary marketing tool for proving the small car’s mettle. Rockstar stepped up to the plate to back driver Foust and Olsbergs saw enough potential in the action sport-meets-motorsport event to field th second car for longtime sponsored driver Kenny Bräck, the Swedish open wheel pro and Indy 500 champion. Bräck won. Foust finished third, breakin Subaru’s four-year stranglehold on the X Games podium and introducing the manufacturer to a new competition venue for small cars. “They used the crap out of it for the Fiesta launch and all of that

marketing,” says Eriksson now. “I plan a lot of things I do, but that I didn’t plan. It just happened.” It was a “hot hatch” breakthrough in the States and a game changer in action motorsport. In the three years between the sport’s introduction to X Games in 2006 and that 2009 race, Subaru had scored every single rally podium — a total of 10. Travis Pastrana brought his Subaru home in second place that year, between the two Fords, marking the end of the era. Since then, and even with the addition of more races and medal-scoring opportunities, Subaru has scored only two more podiums. Ford has chalked up 21. “Andreas really is a visionary,” says Foust. “As soon as he saw X Games, he said, ‘This will be like a videogame with cars, the way you Americans want it.’” The sport is unrecognizable from what it was just a few years ago, and is growing into the potential that Eriksson described after that fi st trip to the X Games. The original, modified rally special stag format is now gone, replaced by a made-in-the-USA riff on the spor of rallycross as it has been known in Europe since the late 1960s. This year’s Global RallyCross Championship has featured a potent mix of highly-modified and p werful cars from Ford, Dodge, Volkswagen and Subaru racing in packs on mixed-surface tracks, and characterized by outrageous sliding, door-to-door contact and big jumps. It’s a nine-round affair with contests held around the world, from Foz do Iguacu, Brazil to Los Angeles. “I think Olsbergs MSE showing the level of commitment and fearless investment into the sport has allowed others to be a little more comfortable doing the same,” says Foust. In addition to the new manufacturers — with more to come — GRC races have featured WRC giants like Grönholm and Sébastien Loeb, action sports stars Pastrana, Block, Bucky Lasek, Dave Mirra, and rallycrossers like Britain’s Liam Doran and Finland’s Heikkinen. At NASCAR, IndyCar and sports car races, the drivers and team owners “Andreas [Eriksson] is definitely Mr. are talking about the new sport of rallycross. At X Games this year, Rallycross,” says Foust. “Even when a pair of IndyCar teams — KV Racing and SH Racing — partnered we go to France to race with 120 cars competing, the OMSE team is known to field a ca . Even the European as one of the best in the world.” Rallycross Championship has benefi ed from the excitement, undergoing an ownership change and rebranding intended to attract 2013 Ford Fiesta ST a younger demographic. “I see what will be the future, and fi e years earlier than everyone else,” Eriksson says, in his rapidfire, wedish-inflec ed staccato. “Sometimes I move too early, but you don’t need to be a rocket science guy to understand what’s happening. You need only look at the kids, your friends’ kids. And you can see what is there – what will be the future.” And whatever that future might For additional photos, visit pasmag.com/rallycrossrevolutionaries hold, Eriksson and Olsbergs MSE are ready to lead the way.

urning heads on the show car scene is always a challenge. Buying a cool car is just the fi st step; it merely provides a foundation to begin a build towards show car status. Once the project is done, it’s easy to think all of the hard work is over, when in reality there is still a lot left to do. From preparing and maintaining the car for shows, to keeping the equipment in pristine condition, to setup, takedown and travel, it all starts to look a lot tougher. For Mike San Antonio (better known to many people as DJ dBase), this 1993 Nissan Skyline GTS-T represents the return of a car show and sound-off veteran. For many years, San Antonio was heavily involved as the founder of one of
38

Canada’s biggest car clubs, Team Evolution Concepts. Over the years, the team displayed and competed at numerous shows and sound-offs, winning more than 80 individual awards and over 60 car club awards, including a record for the most cars from a single club at a single show, with 76 cars in attendance. Organizing a big club and taking on all of the work of building and maintaining his own show cars took its toll and, in 2009, San Antonio retired from the scene. But after performing as the DJ for the CSCS Sport Compact Racing Series for 2011, he was inspired to return. This time around, he was looking to keep some balance in his life and in his ride, making sure it was as fun
to drive and own as it was to take to shows. Wanting to make a statement, he sourced a JDM R33 Skyline GTS-T, still a rare sight on his Ontario turf. The all-white Skyline made decent power in stock form with its RB25DET 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-six, but San Antonio raised the output with a number of upgrades and some help from engine builder Sidewais.com. HKS supplied the intercooler, wastegate, BOV, header, downpipe, turbo timer, air intake and fil er. An APEXi exhaust is also added along with a Blitz sequential boost controller, Walbro fuel pump, GReddy regulator with a wet NOS kit for an extra big hit of power to top it off. Shifting that power is an Exedy Stage 3 clutch and lightweight flywheel

As a pro DJ, DJ dBase takes his audio and his car stereo very seriously. He began competing in car audio back in 1995, so he has owned or has experience with almost every brand of car audio out there, and knows that you usually get what you pay for. For this build, he stepped up to Diamond Audio, a longtime standout in car audio sound quality competition to supply his sound. Two big amplifie s supply the power for the system. A super-efficient class GH our Series TX10001 amplifier deli ers over 1,000 watts of continuous power to the subwoofers, while an ultra-clean Tour Series TX6004 four-channel amp delivers 400 watts to the component speakers all around. The crystal clear sound comes from two sets of Diamond Audio SX65v convertible component speakers. They provide incredibly accurate vocals and a perfect blend of mid-range and highs. The serious bass punches from two 12-inch TX122 subwoofers housed in a custom vented enclosure near a beautifully-finished amp rack built y SIDDS Radio. Back in the day, Diamond Audio was one of only a couple of brands that could consistently produce championship-quality SQ gear. Since their return to the marketplace, they are back to the pinnacle of the podium – a fitting choice or San Antonio, who is making a comeback of his own. Dispelling
the Myths Hello loyal readers. The Sound Advice column is usually a place where I try to answer your questions or give advice on system design, equipment choices and dispense a bit of technical theory. This issue I’m going to dispel a few very common myths, a few of which I have been hearing for decades. I obviously don’t have the space to go into great detail, but I’ll tell you that while some of this may come as a surprise, what you are about to read are fact and can be proven.
MYTH #1: Amplifie s pro-
duce DC when they clip, and that is what burns speaker coils. This is completely, absolutely, totally wrong. A properly operating audio amplifier – when dri en hard enough into clipping to produce virtually square waves – has no DC output whatsoever. However, clipping your amplifier can cause speaker damage because there is more power in a square wave than a sine wave of the same voltage amplitude. How much more power? If you have a perfect square wave, it is exactly doubled. That’s how a 50-watt amp can burn up an 80-watt speaker.
MYTH #2: It’s the distor-
tion in the music that burns up the speaker. Again, this simply isn’t true, although the reasoning behind it is more understandable. Your speakers don’t know if the distortion is part of the music, or if it is something being overdriven in your system. People mistakenly identify amplifier clipping with dis ortion and, when they hear the distortion, speaker damage is common. But the damage is actually caused
by overdriving the amp into clipping, which results in too much applied power. To prove this theory to my students, I drive a tweeter with a square wave (to represent very high distortion) and another identical tweeter with a sine wave (distortion below 0.01%). The actual power levels are adjusted to be the same, at the rated power limit for the tweeters. Both tweeters play for hours with no sign of distress. Excessive power for too long is what burns voice coils. Nothing else.
MYTH #3: Large storage
capacitors are useless and provide no benefit o a car audio system. When people fi st started using large storage capacitors to augment their car’s electrical system current delivery, the most common attributes were improved bass definition and less headlamp dimming on heavy notes. The capacitors improved the sound because a capacitor can supply very large bursts of current very quickly compared to a typical automotive battery. When the amplifier demands current to deliver a bass note, the current supply is virtually instantaneous, and the bass is tighter and better defined. The energy from the capacitor allows the battery voltage to drop less, so that lights and accessories do not dim when the bass note hits. As the popularity of capacitors grew, the market became very competitive and the product quality began to slip in favor of price. Then SPL contesting became all the rage. In these high power, long duration applications, the benefit of a capacitor is actually quite marginal.
Today, the quality of the capacitors varies dramatically. I have personally tested capacitors labeled as “1 Farad” that were actually less than a half Farad. I have also tested 1 Farad caps that were actually over spec. And then there is the ESR, or Equivalent Series Resistance. This is a critical specification that d termines the capacitors charge/ discharge rate. One of the reasons a good capacitor outperforms the car battery is because it has much lower ESR. This is also why the capacitor should be placed as close to your amp power terminal as possible; you want to minimize the resistance of the cable between the cap and the amp too. But again, I’ve seen bargain brand caps with ESR so high that the car battery would perform better. Bottom line: high quality, large value storage capacitors will improve your electrical system current delivery and the sound of your system. But choose carefully, there is a lot of junk out there.
MYTH #4: The advertised specifications ha e to be accurate by law. I can’t begin to tell you how far off base this is. I ha e tested all sorts of products that did not measure up to their published specifications. It happens in all product categories, not just amps and speakers. One memorable example was a class D subwoofer amplifier that sta ed on the box in big red print, “1,100 watts.” The owner’s manual repeated this claim, reading “1,100 watts at less than 1% THD into 2 ohms.” This amp was roughly the size of a small textbook and had a single
Excessive power for too long a duration is what burns voice coils. Nothing else.” 40 A fuse right there in plain sight. Some manufacturers don’t give us much credit for common sense and basic math skills, do they? Assuming we supply this magic amp with 14.4 volts and drove it to the limit of the fuse, it would draw about 576 watts from the battery. Amps are typically 70% to 80% efficient, leaving us wit about 460 watts of output. It was obviously impossible to get 1,100 watts under any condition. Be suspicious of ratings that seem too good to be true. Look for products using the appropriate CEA Test Standard, which are at least closer to the truth. Another good source of actual performance is right here in PASMAG – I do the testing and know these numbers are fact. A good rule of thumb for a quality amplifier is it will cost at least fifty cen s per actual watt. There might be a few that get under that guideline, but very few. So when you see an amp advertised at 1,000 watts for 100 dollars, you should be very skeptical. Oh, and there are no 200 watt head units. None.

Features and Functions We’ve got a very cool, full-color threeinch LCD display with awesome graphics, and scrolling artist and track information on the removable faceplate. You can connect your Apple device, or a USB drive to bring your music collection along for the ride. iPhone users can also connect and control Pandora internet radio channels, and even use the thumbs up and thumbs down functions right on the faceplate. That right there is your 120 bucks worth, Skippy – and then some. But there’s more. Cool features like a front- and rearmounted auxiliary inputs, two pairs of RCA outputs that can be configured a front and rear, or front and subwoofer;

Controls and Functionality there’s a three-band parametric EQ with selectable center frequency as well as a separate variable crossover and level control for the subwoofer output. A builtin CEA-2006 rated 18-watt per channel amplifier pr vides plenty of power until you can afford external amps, and there is a credit card-sized wireless remote control. There’s even an input for a steering wheel control interface! Wait, you want even more? To prevent large volume differences between the various sources, each available source has its own level adjustment and the LCD screen can be adjusted for color intensity, contrast and brightness.
The DUAL XDMA761 has a fairly-well laid out front panel with large easy-to-use buttons and a nice rotary volume control with a rubber grip ring to make it comfortable to use. The encoder is detented (mechanical resistance), but only slightly, so the control does not have the notchy, clicky feel like some others. The LCD display is fairly easy to read except in very bright direct sunlight. It displays the usual information and allows you to rapidly search for artists or songs et al on your iPod or iPhone. Button illumination can be any color you want as long as it’s blue, and the front USB port is covered by a hinged door that also is illuminated blue.

I f ind mysel f con t inu a l l y impr essed at the sonic quality that is available for less than some folks spend on a pair of jeans. The operation and the controls are fairly logical, but there are a couple gripes I find immedia ely. First, when changing sources, the XDMA761 makes you scroll through all available inputs whether they are connected or not. When you finally pick the source, ou have to press the select function to actually engage the source you scrolled to. This isn’t a fun or safe process when you’re driving and you want to switch from tuner to iPod or CD. Pressing the menu button brings you straight to the audio adjustment section, which is great. Subsequent presses of the menu button bring up other areas of adjustment such as general setup, source gain setup and screen setup menus. Navigating the menus is done via rotating the volume knob and then pressing it in to make your selection. I notice you have to be careful when pressing the knob to avoid rotating it and changing your selection. Again, not something you will want to do while driving.

In my listening room, I set up the XDMA761 using the RCA outputs to drive my full range and subwoofer amplifie s. I use the subwoofer crossover control to limit the sub output frequency range to 80 Hz. As I go through my usual list of evaluation tracks, I find m self continually impressed at the sonic quality that is available for less than some folks spend on a pair of jeans. Quite amazing when you think about all that is going on in there.

The sonic performance proves to be just fine with a nice flat sponse, great stereo separation and negligible amounts of noise. I find the top end slightly on the “polite” side, but there is no loss of detail nor does the sound lack brilliance. Tuner performance of the FM section pulls in the usual stations just fine, while AM reception isn’t quite as good as I usually experience. Another minor gripe, there is a big difference in output level from one step to the next on the encoder, particularly when you get into the higher levels. A bit finer adjustment here would be nice. But again, it’s only $119.99!

CROSSOVERS FREQUENCY RESPONSE AUX Source
The next morning I connect the XDMA761 to my test bench and run the standard barrage of tests. My measured data proves what I heard the previous day, and also underlines the real value of the unit; the response curve measures quite flat, within 3 d from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and signal-tonoise comes in at almost -78 dBA for the RCAs. The information I was given indicated the RCA outputs were limited to 2 volts, but I measure a very healthy 4.1 volts unclipped from my test unit. Output impedance is average at 215 ohms.

PROTECT YOUR RIDE
WITH CONVENIENCE AND STYLE! id your vehicle come with a factory security system? Are you in the market for an alarm to be used as a security device and/or convenience with accessories such as door locks, trunk release or a GPS tracking system that monitors the vehicle? Whether your vehicle is factory-equipped with a security system or not, today’s advanced systems give you lots of options and plenty of reasons to integrate with your factory system, or to simply guard your unprotected ride in style. And don’t forget those optional items like a radar sensor to protect your convertible top, motion/tilt sensors for your new wheels and, you may want to consider a back-up battery that works if your primary one fails. OEM add-on security and/or convenience Many consumers are demanding features on their factory-installed keyless entry systems that are simply not provided by the factories. A great example of this is the new ADS-BM1 from iDatalink. This amazing piece now allows BMW owners the ability to add remote start capability to their vehicle’s OEM keyless entry system. Better yet, the upgrade does not require even a single wire to be cut or spliced, which is great to avoid warranty issues with the dealership! And, once your electronics installer programs the system, the factory BMW remote operates the system flawlessl . For those seeking additional James Bond-style toys, Compustar has created the Drone 2000, which allows control over its system via a Smartphone. Very cool! ADDING A SECURITY SYSTEM Today, vehicles are far more advanced – “smart” if you will – compared to vehicles of the past. Likewise, programming modern vehicles and/or accessories (for example, certain security systems) can be done via connecting a USB cable tied into a specifi software program that allows various options or features to be turned on/off, making wiring a positive (+) instead of a negative (-), etc. Most companies like CompuStar, Crimestopper, Directed and Encore Automotive Systems use some type of software that communicates to the security system using a direct connection via USB and/or data ports. Directed covers this niche with its SmartStart 70
12 Volt.indd 1
system, which allows you to stay “Cloud-Connected” to your vehicle via your smartphone. SmartStart works with Android and iPhones, which is beneficial because it can be in egrated with voice talk and Siri, manage texts, email alerts and control multiple vehicles. SmartStart is also loaded with additional features, including GPS tracking, SmartSchedule, vehicle status, roadside assistance, home control, parked car finder and more Another option many customers prefer is a two-way system. This means the remote communicates to the alarm, and the alarm communicates back to the remote. Having a two-way security system allows you to see/ know what is happening with the vehicle in real-time. For example, if the trunk is opened, the remote displays this action, or if the system is triggered or tampered with, you will be notified. PREVENT WARRANTY ISSUES! Slowly but surely security manufacturers are eliminating the need to cut wires in your vehicle for a security or convenience installation using vehicle specific solutions. These s stems use vehicle specific in egration modules and/ or wiring harnesses. The new wiring harness is called a “T-harness.” Due to the new Tharnesses being utilized, your vehicle’s factory warranty will be intact since no wires will be cut in most cases. Most modern systems are offering a vehicle specific -harness with their system. These are available at local authorized retailers when you purchase your security or convenience system at the time of installation. Unlike the old days when cutting and/or splicing into wiring was the norm, using the Tharness has just about eliminated the need for this old procedure. These super computer-style security and remote start systems use the Tharness to tap into the wiring via male-female plug-in connections. “CompuStar and iDatalink is revolutionizing the way aftermarket remote start and security systems are installed into vehicles,” says Jason Kaminski, Director of Sales and Marketing at CompuStar. “The old way of cutting 15-plus wires and soldering connections is becoming a thing of the past. We are currently shipping T-harness systems to our authorized dealers for Ford, most GM platforms, Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Mercedes and (most) recently BMW.”
In many cases, the wiring and splicing route may be the norm. But, instead of using outdated techniques, today’s installation technicians prefer to use the T-harness for a plug-and-play installation. Nonetheless, the professional electronics installer needs to be familiar with computers, software and user interface systems, so the system can be “programmed” to work in today’s sophisticated vehicles. CONCLUSION Today’s technology now allows us to expand our factory keyless entry, security and/or convenience systems. The use of T-harnesses avoids vehicle warranty issues, and improves the quality of the professional installation. As a customer, the only step you need to make is deciding what you want. The options are limitless due to the advanced systems now available. It’s best to divide your purchase it into a few segments. First, you need to set a budget for the system. As mentioned, look at the type of system you desire. Ask yourself, do I need a security system? Or, do I crave to have a remote start system? Many buyers choose a combination of both convenience and security to enhance both comfort and ease of use. Regardless of your choice, having one of these systems will give you years of vehicle protection and convenience. Happy driving and stay tuned…

nyone who’s been in the car audio business for more than oh, 38 seconds, will know the name Dynamat. I can’t begin to count the number of vehicles I have applied Dynamat to over the years, including every one of my own. Once you experience a car that has been properly dampened, nothing else will suffice. For over 20 years the folks at Dynamic Control have been the industry’s premier producer of high-quality damping material to improve the sound quality and enjoyment of our rides. What you might not know is the company also produces a wide range of other products specifically designed to improve your ride’s comfort and audio performance in ways you may have never considered. To give you an idea of what’s available and how to use it, we’ve put together this brief tutorial on Dynamat’s range of product offerings.

Dynamat Xtreme is a patented material composed of elastomeric butyl and aluminum layers. It is fl xible and can easily be applied to clean and dry sheet metal or other hard surfaces. A very strong adhesive bonds the material to the surface, thereby minimizing vibration and sheet metal resonances. A roller can be used to remove any air pockets, which can reduce the effectiveness of the product. It can be cut and shaped to fit virtually any applic tion and is extremely effective at reducing unwanted vibration-induced noise, with as much as four times the damping capability as the original Dynamat material. It can also be applied in multiple layers for even greater damping. This is the product you want when you are aiming for a quiet, rattleand resonance-free interior. The Dynamat Xtreme product is available in various kit applications or sheets and bulk packs.
Dynaplate is a thinner, lighter weight material developed specifically as a rigid material for reinforcing panels in vehicles used in high-SPL competitions. It is applied in the same manner as the Dynamat Xtreme, but better suited to large, flat panels Dynaplate is roughly 75% lighter than the original Dynamat but provides 50% better damping.

Dynamat 101 Dynaliner is a very light weight insulator perfect for using on top of Dynamat Xtreme. The material comes in three thicknesses, from 0.125 to 0.5 inches. Designed to reduce noise as well as heat, this is a perfect addition for any car that you want to be cooler and quieter. The material is unaffected by oil and will not absorb water. It can be used on floo s, the roof, doors, trunks and even as a hoodliner. When you need the interior of your hot rod to be as quiet as a Bentley, Dynaliner is a must have.
Dynapad is a 0.375-inch thick, four-layer composite barrier. It is designed to provide even better thermal insulation than Dynaliner, with the added benefit of reducing l w-frequency noise. With these attributes, Dynapad is primarily used on floo s of vehicles with exhaust system heat bleed and excessive noise. This is a great product if you run headers and an aftermarket exhaust system, especially if the exhaust is tucked nice and close to the underside of the car.

Hoodliner is exactly what the name implies. A special “sound soaker” foam core absorbs engine noise and heat, while a one-millimeter-thick reinforced aluminized skin creates a barrier to reflect up o 97% of radiant heat to protect the hood paint finish It also looks very cool when you open the hood to show off our motor. I use the Hoodliner material as a heat insulator under my motorcycle’s plastic side covers and beneath the fuel tank to keep me cooler when riding in slow traffic – it really orks! Like most of the other Dynamat products, the Hoodliner comes as a single roll measuring 32 x 54 inches, approximately 12 square feet.
Untitled-2 1 Connected Dynamat 15.07.indd 3
Dynadeck is a special carpet replacement product that simply sits on top of the floo . It is a non-adhesive product made with a highquality, 0.375-inch thick waterproof liner over 0.25-inch high efficiency thermo-acoust foam. It’s a fairly heavy material that will go a long way to reduce noise and heat transfer and it feels good underfoot. The top surface is finished in an embossed design that resemble deep twist carpet. This stuff is the bees knee for any application where carpeting isn’t an option. For instance, in a Jeep you like to clean out with a hose or similar applications. It’s also great in street rods and open cockpit cars. The Dynadeck material is sold in 54-inch wide rolls of various lengths from three to 12 feet.
So there you have it, a complete rundown on the automotive based products that Dynamic Control provides to make our cars quieter, better sounding and more comfortable. As a longtime user of the Dynamat product, I can tell you the difference it makes is dramatic. They even make an extensive lineup of damping products for you home and computer, which we didn’t talk about, but are equally impressive. But remember, if your car interior is 6 dB quieter, that’s like getting 6 dB more dynamic range and an amplifie power increase! For additional photos, visit pasmag.com/connecteddynamat

Recap
t is time for the DMCC midseason recap. There were plenty of changes that took place before the season that led to an action-packed fi st half, and here’s how things are shaping up in the standings... After winning the championship last year, Marc Landreville’s 2013 season has been a rough one. Dealing with mechanical issues at a number of events isn’t what he planned, but he still managed to secure two podiums so far and hopefully he will see more in the future. Pat Cyr was set to campaign a new FR-S this season, but he did not have the car 100% competition ready until the third round – and even then he still had 76

problems. For the fi st two rounds, Cyr used his trusty Corolla and was able to win round one and place second in round two, putting him in the points race for this years championship. Now using the FRS, it is going to be hard for him to continue the championship figh with a brand new chassis that is not yet proven. Last year’s Pro-Am champ Max Lemoine moved up to the Pro ranks this year with his very unique S10 pick-up truck. He is adapting very well to running with the pros and has been amazing to watch. He has a super-aggressive style and a loud machine that makes so much smoke you can't help but smile every time he’s on track.

DMCC Mid-Season Recap
With two podiums, including a fi st place, Lemoine is not only leading the rookie of the year race, but also the overall chase for the 2013 championship. Off track there has been some big ne s as well. Due to contract and negotiation problems, the DMCC did not hold its round seven Labour Day event at Autodrome St-Eustache; instead it was moved to the St-Croix race
track near Quebec City. The DMCC has raced on Labour Day at the Autodrome every year since the start of the series and is sold out every year, so let’s hope they resolve these issues for the 2014 season. Continuing news off track, one of the last original DMCC drivers, Dom Desrosiers has officially retired from competition. He recentl built a crazy turbo V8 350Z, but after problems

AEM Inf in ity ECU Countles s w ays of cus t omiza tion By Mike Bonanni
T
oday’s modern automobiles are technological marvels, especially when it comes to engine management and tuning. Long gone are the days where all you need is a flathea screwdriver and a toolbox full of different sized jets for your carbureted engine. Although today’s engine tuning and management is much more complicated, AEM Electronics has been hard at work designing a user-friendly, standalone ECU that can compete with the best of the best. The result is the new AEM Infinity EC , a full stand-alone engine control unit with more features than there are beards at a drift event – which is
a staggering amount. Speaking of drifting, it was on Fredric Aasbo’s 700 horsepower Papadakis Racing Scion tC Formula Drift car where the AEM Infinity ECU saw som early development and testing. Today, the finished product co pletely controls the Scion tC drift rocket powerplant and allows the ultimate quick and painless control over crucial elements that make sure the car is running at peak performance at all times. Going in-depth on the list of features, the Infinity ECU ould take up this entire magazine, so let’s highlight a few of the major ones that Stephan Papadakis uses on Fredric Aasbo’s Hankook Tire/Scion Racing tC.
Another major feature that keeps your engine safe is the knock sensing feature. Cylinder detonation is an engine killer so you want to be sure to detect it as early as possible and remedy the situation immediately. The Infinity ECU ha a sophisticated knock sensing feature that can be used for single knock sensors, or dual for even more sensitivity. The ECU can even discern which cylinders are experiencing the dreaded knocking and
retard timing to those cylinders, maintaining as much performance as possible while adequately protecting your engine.
82

Tech AEM 15.07.indd 1
With a list of features twice as long as the ones we touched on, the possibilities with the AEM Infinity ECU are nearly endless.” One of the main features of any stand-alone ECU on a turbocharged car is boost control. While this is common on many systems, the number of ways to control boost via the Infinity ECU is what se s it apart. On Aasbo’s drift car they control boost via RPM to achieve a specific p wer curve that better matches Fredric’s driving style. For drag racing applications you can even control boost by time and gear, making it easier to manage traction in high horsepower applications.
A ut o & Sound
2013-09-06 10:21 AM
Papadakis is also a huge fan of the drive-by-wire capabilities of the Infinity EC , specificall when it comes to the drift car. Use of this feature allows you to program your own throttle curve to dial in response time and much more to dramatically improve drivability. This feature is also a huge benefit when running comple ely custom engine setups. “We run a Camry throttle pedal and WRX throttle body, and we only need to wire in between them to get them to work using the Infi ity,” Papadakis says. When drifting, drivers tend to spend a lot of time at full throttle bouncing off the rev limi er. This, of course, is not the most ideal thing to do when it comes to maintaining the reliability of your engine. Bouncing off the re limiter can put a lot of excess wear on engine parts and the backfires xperienced from the
ignition cuts put a lot of unwanted stress on your valvetrain. No need to worry, the Infinit ECU has you covered with its rev limiter and fuel cut tunability. The Infinity ECU chooses the RP level for the rev limiter to kick in while also softening the fuel cut, thus reducing the amount of backfire and xcess wear and tear normally experienced while riding the rev limiter as much as drifters do.
Of course, aside from reliability and driveability advantages, the Infinity ECU also helps tune or power and torque. Aside from the normal timing and fuel tuning, the Infinity ECU also all ws you to control variable valve timing for variable cam setups. Papadakis uses this on Aasbo’s drift car to add a considerable amount of torque below 5,000 rpm by controlling and tuning the variable intake cam.
Nitrous control is another unique feature that Papadakis uses the Infinity ECU or. These days, nitrous is making a huge presence in top-level drift cars, and Aasbo’s Hankook Tire/Scion Racing tC is no different. They don’t necessarily use nitrous for peak horsepower though, they use it to make a more consistent powerband on big turbo cars. To do this, full customizability of your nitrous setup is a must. The AEM Infinity ECU o Aasbo’s drift car monitors boost, engine speed and throttle position to determine when to spray the nitrous and when to cut it off. It also simultaneously adjusts the amount of fuel needed when the nitrous is on. This feature gives Aasbo a much wider powerband when drifting. Perhaps the best feature of the Infinity ECU i its ability to integrate and work with many different vehicle systems. For instance, the Infinit ECU on Aasbo’s drift car is integrated with a
number of AEM gauges, AEM’s Engine Position Module Puck, and even the AiM digital dash. It can simultaneously log all of the data from these inputs as well as the data monitored by the Infinity ECU i self – and for anyone who has ever raced, you know how important data logging is to troubleshoot and prevent problems. AEM even provides free data analysis software to help make sense of what your car is doing.
With a list of features twice as long as the ones we touched on, the possibilities with the AEM Infinity ECU are nearly endless. AEM really has thought of e erything with this ECU. Several years of intense development at the highest levels of Formula Drift and other forms of motorsport show in the ways Papadakis has cleverly been able to put the Infinity ECU eatures to use. To learn more about the Infinity ECU and h w you can use it to completely customize your setup, head to www.AEMElectronics.com. For additional photos, visit pasmag.com/AEMInfinity CU

Turn 14 Distribution Story by Patrick Lagowski

T
he Internet is replacing storefront industries by diminishing their relevance in the physical marketplace. One example is in e-commerce, where online purchases are increasingly more convenient for customers that already knows what they’re looking for. In the performance auto parts industry, nobody does it better than Turn 14 Distribution. Located 20 miles north of Philadelphia, Turn 14 Distribution serves the needs of a wide range of customers and retailers, each with different spending patterns. Their customers vary in both the amount of products they purchase, and in the frequency of them returning for more. The great thing about a warehouse distributor such as Turn 14 Distribution is that it is able to accommodate everyone, due to excellent customer service, a large variety of products in stock and quick delivery times. Furthermore, Turn 14 Distribution’s success is largely the result of improving three key areas of the company, which explains why new brands continue to hit the shelves at its 52,000 square foot warehouse year after year. These areas are employees, the technology and the warehouse itself. Turn 14 Distribution is fully staffed with every necessary department to ensure the day-to-day operations are fully internally-controlled. “There is no outsourcing, which means greater integration of all our operations,” says Daryl Sampson, Marketing Manager at Turn 14 Distribution. Key departments include sales, marketing, graphic design, logistics, I.T., web development and shipping. The fact they are all car enthusiasts helps them relate with the customer even more. The employees actually know a lot about the brands that Turn 14 Distribution supplies, such brands as aFe, Enkei, GReddy and Stoptech to name a few. By utilizing a forecasting strategy, Turn 14 Distribution understands every popular vehicle market and the products that go with them. “We know how difficult it can be o provide the necessary parts for a car; the more unique it is the greater the project becomes, and Turn 14 Distribution can help you with that,” Sampson stresses. Turn 14 Distribution recognizes the need for rapid order fulfillment and transparency through and through. A proprietary warehouse system utilizing the latest in Android OS technology enables their staff o begin processing an order within minutes of placement. This also allows items to ship within minutes of being received, eliminating any lead time once an item hits their loading docks. 88
» Performance
Turn 14 Distribution provides customers with assistance after the sales experience, including marketing promotions and showroom design. Sampson tells me that Turn 14 Distribution even hosts semi-annual workshops with parts manufacturers, called Product 101. “Here, manufacturers provide a product training seminar, as well as answer any questions customers may have in regards to the installation or the products themselves,” he says. This is a great example that illustrates how Turn 14 Distribution isn’t your typical warehouse distributor. The technology utilized within Turn 14 Distribution is part of its competitive advantage, in both complexity and efficien , but it also utilizes simple techniques typically not seen in warehouse design. For one, the organization of the products is based entirely on relevancy and product demand. Turn 14 Distribution wants to carry every product a customer desires, but for those that typically wouldn’t be in stock anywhere else, their vertical real estate allows them to stock less popular products as well. By stocking more commonly purchased products lower, it prevents the need of using a forklift. Despite its 27-foot ceilings and narrow aisles, there is no way to physically fit more produc s into one warehouse. Also, Turn 14 Distribution utilizes laserguided markings on the ground, so forklifts are able to use automated pathways
throughout the warehouse for quick, efficient and safe product picking. Another key aspect of the technology employed at Turn 14 Distribution is in the computer networking system that connects the warehouse, offices and cu omers to a wealth of data. “This data is used internally, but more importantly, improves the customer service experience,” he says. Turn 14 Distribution’s customers can even use this to determine whether a part is in stock, if it is on back order, how long it will take before the part is on shelves and even how many parts the manufacturer has. The Turn14.com website is very accurate since warehouse workers confirm quantities with compu er controlled order management software at the loading dock before physically stocking or pulling any product, ensuring that no customer will be disappointed with inaccurate information. Using Turn 14 Distribution as a prime example, it is clear that warehouse distributors still have a very significant place in the mar et; but when done right, it means an additional service for the customer and dealer in B2B transactions. The performance world is indeed a niche market, so it’s great to see a company so deeply invested in improving the experience for everyone through its services.
