EDITOR’S NOTE All day, every day...

So please sit back and enjoy as these pages take you through 2012 and 2013 as seen through the lens of PASMAG! ERICKSON OBIACORO Editor

November marks the end of the show season in the automotive aftermarket industry, with SEMA capping off the year and setting the tone for next season. It’s another crazy year under our belt, which allows us to pause and take a look back. It has been eventful, filled with significant milestones for PASMAG as we undertook some major changes of our own, including our office move and completely revamping our logo and cover layout. Tuning 365, PASMAG’s first timeline issue, is a yearbook of sorts that brings together the highlights and memorable moments occurring between October 2012 and September 2013. It includes everything from insights and updates on our cover cars and event coverage from across North America, to trends in the scene and even some pop culture references. Putting together an issue of this size and scope is a major undertaking. It takes contributions from our entire staff to make Tuning 365 a reality, from our internal departments to our contributors, event partners and recon squads, everyone in the PASMAG universe is in some way responsible for the final product you’re about to enjoy. Even Bob and Sally, our office goldfish, put in their two cents worth! In the end, the process of sifting through a year’s worth of content and boiling it down into Tuning 365 represents a journey. This 164-page issue represents the memories of a great season.

WORK HARD PLAY HARDER... Make no mistake, we work hard and play hard! This issue, however, was more an example of work hard and work harder! Don’t worry about the empty office, though - we just needed to catch our breath!

DAIGO SAITO

OCTOBER 2012

THE MAN BEHIND THE SMOKE INTERVIEW BY JACOB LEVETON

As the first-ever driver to earn the FD Championship in his rookie season, Daigo Saito set the bar high for future seasons. He previously stated he wouldn’t compete in FD until he felt he had a program that was capable of winning the championship. The wait pays off and he earns the hardware he’s been longing for. Afterwards, we sit down with Saito to find out what got him into Formula D. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DRIVE IN FORMULA D? I have been looking up to the series for quite a while now. I was able to meet many of the drivers and watch them compete online and in person by travelling to check out the series. I really love the way the cars are built, the style of Formula Drift, the aggressive drivers and how the fans get super excited and serious towards drifting as a sport. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO FIND SPONSORS FOR FORMULA D WHEN YOU LIVED IN JAPAN? This was not easy at all. I had some help on the U.S. side through Bridges Racing, but mostly I was able to earn sponsorship through Formula Drift Asia with Achilles Radial. I competed in the FD Asia series in 2011 and I was lucky to join Achilles at the right time when they were beginning to spread their marketing efforts into the U.S. After that, everything just fell into place and gave me the opportunity to compete in the U.S. as well as the Asia series.

12-13

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE LEXUS SC430 FOR 2012? I really like Toyotas and was looking for just the right car to build for the US. I was able to find this chassis after the tsunami in Northern Japan in 2011. I didn’t want to see the chassis go to waste, so I completely rebuilt everything on it and was able to put together a series-winning machine.

FORMULA D 2012 FINALS

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON

The final round of ormula D does not disappoint. Several drivers have impressive runs including Mordaunt in the Apex’I Lexus SC430, Field in his CX Racing / Blacktrax Performance S14 and the journeyman Robbie Nishida in his Achilles Tire Lexus SC300. Rhys Millen meets Daigo Saito in the Top 4, making the championship chase much clearer. For Millen to win, he needs to defeat Saito in the Top 4 and beat the winner of Justin Pawlak vs. Ryan Tuerck on the other side of the bracket. For Vaughn Gittin Jr., his championship relied on Millen defeating Saito but he loses in the final round. Sai o ultimately goes on to claim the title after defeating Millen in a tough fight 18

YOU’RE WELL-KNOWN FOR DRIVING THE TOYOTA JZX100 CHASSIS IN JAPAN. HOW SIMILAR IS THIS LEXUS SC430 CAR TO YOUR OLD JZX100 CARS? At first, I didn’t think the cars would be very different. After I drove the Lexus for the first time, I noticed that it was nothing like the JZX100 chassis – it was so different. I think the wheelbase and the weight of the car contribute to a lot of the difference. We made minor changes to the car setup throughout the season, which made the car much more competitive. HOW IS FORMULA D SIMILAR OR DIFFERENT TO OTHER SERIES YOU HAVE DRIVEN IN, BOTH IN JAPAN AND IN THE REST OF ASIA? Formula Drift is very different from the other series. FD has the biggest venues and is very exciting; not to mention the high skill the drivers and teams have as well. IF YOU COULD CHANGE 1 THING ABOUT FORMULA D, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE? I would like to see Formula Drift happen in Japan. I would really love to have the Japanese crowd and all of the other Japanese drifters to see it in person and see how exciting it is.

PASMAG’S NOVEMBER ISSUE HAS ALWAYS BEEN GEARED TOWARD RACING AND PERFORMANCE TO COMPLEMENT THE ANNUAL SEMA SHOW – the biggest event in the automotive aftermarket industry. So it came as no surprise when we decided to put Ken Gushi’s GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S on the cover. Two months before the first FR-S even hit dealerships, the GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S made its competitive debut at the 2012 Formula Drift season opener in Long Beach. Gushi and team came out swinging, making it all the way to the Great 8, a daunting task for any competitor, let alone one with a completely new platform. For the 2013 Formula Drift season, Gushi’s car has some minor updates. Most noticeable is the Rocket Bunny kit, giving the FR-S a more aggressive stance. The colorful and loud livery helps the car stand out in the crowd. The 50-horsepower and 50-lb-ft of torque increase also saw Gushi’s ride pack a massive 650 horses and 550 lb-ft with the help of a turbo, manifold and piping reconfiguration. The turbo needed to be relocated from the stock location to the front of the engine, and to do that the radiator had to be moved to the back. The result was a shorter runner to the turbo for better response, increased horsepower and a better weight ratio. With a more balanced car, the FR-S also received bigger Hankook Ventus RS-3 rear tires (265/40 ZR18) and a re-tuned suspension to improve grip.

With an innate attention-to-detail, excellent team management and the driving skill of Ken Gushi, it’s no surprise the GReddy Performance X Scion Racing Drift FR-S is quickly making a name for itself among the Formula Drift ranks, having made it into the Top 16 at all but one event in the 2012 Formula Drift season.

PERFORMANCE RACING INDUSTRY TRADE SHOW

29

If you work in the industry and have racing in your blood, the PRI Trade show in Orange County Convention Center, Orlando is the place to be. Over 1,100 companies displayed the latest advances in racing products and race engineering. Engine parts, suspension components, data acquisition, safety gear, new metal alloys and coatings, machining equipment, race electronics – it’s all part of the world’s largest racing trade show.

The system is well-made and sounds excellent. It could probably be mounted in bookshelf cabinets and no one would ever guess they are designed for car audio. Granted, at around $800 they’re not cheap, but for this level of quality and performance they are worth every penny.

NOVEMBER 2012 YEAR

DITION EPOJTECTRACEN CONCPR CORD

FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY FEATURE

VIP’d OUT!

As you can see from our initial concept, we were able to take our vision and turn the Accord into a Luxury VIP machine - with the help of many shops, sponsors and man hours, of course!

It’s great to visit the Honda Canada Headquarters to pick up the newest Accord V6, but the weather is definitely not on our side. We drive through slush and sludge and bring the car into the garage as soon as possible to clean it up. When we finally get to the VIP build, we see why the Accord really is the best of both worlds. The coupe shows off some of Honda’s best performance and styling cues, while the sedan continues to be one of the most sought-after options for VIP-inspired rides. When PASMAG and Honda teamed up for the Remix 2.0 Accord last year, the car underwent a number of upgrades geared toward building a high-performance machine. Highlighted by a CT Engineering supercharger, that Accord coupe was built for speed. This time around, PASMAG partners with a number of custom shops and suppliers to take the Accord sedan in a totally new direction — a luxury VIP-inspired machine.

DECEMBER 2012 PAS Dec/Jan Issue

finally hits newsstands December/January marks the middle of frigid winter temperatures for many of our readers, but it doesn’t mean the coverage freezes for the lucky few in the South. One of two double issues we release, the December/ January magazine features in-depth reviews and our annual SEMA coverage, as well as the beastly Nissan 350Z 3.0 owned by Farhad (Muzzy) Yousefi.

Hard to believe, but since gracing the cover, Muzzy’s 350 has undergone a dramatic change once again, this time converting his 4.0 project into the first fully-switched right-hand drive Fairlady Z! Dropping the DuPont Snake Skin Green for a blazing Burning Fire Red Chameleon paint scheme, the 4.0 also has the first-ever fully shaved Z33 engine bay and a wide array of JDM goodies, including a moulded Veilside widebody kit, seats, roll cage, and frame bracing – complete with a custom Vortech Supercharger kit and full D2 Racing coilover bag air suspension. The 2013 3.0 was a huge success making six appearances in 2013 with a combined reach of more than 2,000,000 total spectators, and leading the charge with the new EGO Killer team, there’s little doubt the 4.0 will be back to take SEMA with a vengeance.

PAS picks up the

2013

Honda Civic Si for the Tuned by Honda project build

It’s a freezing cold trip to the Honda Headquarters to pick up the first of two of our Tuned by Honda project cars – the 2013 Civic Si. It isn’t yet available to the public, but despite the wet snow, we still manage to turn a lot of heads while driving it back to the PAS offices. With its tuned suspension, short-throw transmission, newly designed console, and leather (yeah, leather!) seats, the Si is an instant hit with everyone here at PAS. The idea for the soon-to-be-named Civic Si Circuit Sports is to take a sporty package and make it a track-inspired machine. It travels across Canada, visiting Vancouver, Montreal, the Canadian International Auto Show, the Honda Indy Toronto 2inTO weekend and everything in between. From the 3M white satin vinyl wrap to the Megan Racing coil-overs and custom airbrushed HJC helmet, the Civic Si Circuit Sports is all about a great package that can handle the track and make the time away from it just as enjoyable. With the help of High-Speed Performance, Ultra Auto Sound and ReStyleIt, we put together a list of upgrades that would make any race team or electronics store jealous – it’s performance auto and sound at its finest.

FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETION As you can see from our concept, we achieve our vision and even improve on it! We can’t wait to take it to another level next year!

PAS Production CLOSED for the holidays

We were cutting it close to December 25, but we take a break for the holidays after a hugely successful and eventful 2012. With a Christmas tree in the office and snow outside, some of us relax at home and go snowboarding, while others make trips to Miami and Las Vegas to escape the cold for the ocean and Vegas strip. We also begin planning the huge move to our new offices in Liberty Village in Toronto, which is mere months away. Then it’s off for celebratory drinks before starting all over again in 2013!

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC EIKENBERRY

It’s off to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Expo, where Eric Eikenberry gets to experience some of the coolest new toys and see the stunning Audi R18 e-tron quattro race car up close. The elephant in the room at CES is Apple. Apple products are everywhere. They have fully emerged as the dominant force in mobile audio and yet the company doesn’t even bother to display its wares at CES. Apple also doesn’t make car stereo components and yet we believe every aftermarket manufacturer offers at least one head unit that interfaces with an iPod, iPad or iPhone. We think there are more than a few major aftermarket CEOs who are happy Apple doesn’t make a car stereo receiver. Alpine snagged a CES 2013 Innovations award for “In-Vehicle Audio” with its new TuneIt app for three new receivers. Available for iPhone or Android phones, TuneIt is designed to offer incredible control over a nine-band parametric equalizer, time correction, crossover points and Media Xpander. These CD head units can also stream music from Pandora Internet radio, in addition to offering Bluetooth Plus music streaming from a smartphone. They are very capable single-DIN units at near entry-level price points.

Ok, ok, If you didn’t notice it in the issue, shame on you. But an even BIGGER shame on us for putting out the now infamous “Toyko Auto Salon” story with a massive typo in the headline. Yes, it was possibly our biggest oversight to date, but hey, it makes for some good Easter Egg hunting in the mag doesn’t it? Maybe we should do more of these in the future... That aside, we have some fantastic coverage and photography of the cars, girls and highlights from Chiba, Japan courtesy of JDM specialist Adam Zillin. There is an overload of AE86s at the show, but no sign of Nissan or the S16 Silvia – hopefully that changes next year. The show is still an utter success. BFGOODRICH G-FORCE RIVAL TIRE EVENT

NOLA MOTORSPORTS PARK AVONDALE, LOUISIANA It’s not often a revolutionary tire hits the shelves, so when we catch wind of the new BFGoodrich g-Force Rival, we have to test it out. We fly down to Louisiana to try out the new competition street tire on the track, in the straights, and the autoslalom and skidpad courses on the new NOLA Motorsports Park, and the results are astounding. Whether it was the Miller Mustang FR500S, the Playboy Cup MX-5, the new WRX STI or the E92 M3, the Rivals blow away the competition in grip, wear and tear, and consistency. With its new rollover tread pattern, the Rival gives you better lateral grip and stronger, more responsive input. Long story short, the technologies in the Rival make it shine. If you’re looking for a high-grip competition street tire, the g-Force Rival should be at the top of your list.

SCION FR-S VORTECH SUPERCHARGER KIT INSTALL BY MIKE BONANNI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILLIP AWAD

The Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ platform has taken the tuner world by storm. It’s at almost every track day, car show, or autocross across North America, but despite its immense popularity, there’s still one common complaint – it needs more power. Enter Vortech Superchargers, one of the most recognized and reputable names in aftermarket forced induction. The talented team at Vortech has come up with a bolt-on supercharger kit that pumps out nearly 100 more horsepower than stock! Vortech makes installations as simple as possible for an aftermarket forced induction kit, but it is still a lengthy job requiring some mechanical ability and a stocked toolbox. Make sure you have enough workspace, proper tools and ample time. Your Vortech Supercharger kit will come with detailed instructions and it is highly recommended that you also have a factory service manual on hand. A friend who is willing to help is never a bad thing either! Also check to make sure your kit comes with all the required parts. The fi st step on the installation begins inside your house. You will need a laptop computer and internet for the EcuTek ECU re-flashing soft are, which needs to be installed on your computer. Double check to make sure your software is completely up to date by checking on EcuTek’s website (www.ecutek.com). Then, follow the step-by-step instructions to re-flas your cars factory ECU in preparation for the new supercharger. This will require connecting the computer to the vehicles OBD-II port. 50

it’s time prep the car for the installation. Safely get the car off the ground with 1 Now a hydraulic lift or floor jack and properly placed jack stands. Once safely in the air, remove the front wheels, prop open the hood, remove the front bumper and unpack the new accessory drive belt included in the kit. Set the new belt in a warm room to let the bends relax for future installation. Next, remove the air resonator assembly, disconnect the crankcase breather hose as well as the MAF from the factory air box. Finally, remove the plastic belt covers from both the alternator and A/C compressor, loosen the belt tensioner and remove the accessory belt.

it’s time for the fun stuff. 2 Now First we’re going to install the supplied alternator tilt bracket. Loosen the alternator and grind a bit of the stock bracket boss before installing the new bracket.

remove the two lower A/C 3 Next, compressor mounting bolts and install the supplied mounting bracket using the new bolts provided. Once finished, remove the grooved and smooth idler pulleys from the engine cover and set them aside. Replace the smooth idler pulley above the crank damper with the supplied 2.75-inch pulley and bolt.

locate the pre-assembled 4 Now supercharger mounting bracket in your kit and grab the belt we set aside to “relax.” Re-install the remaining stock idler pulleys in their original locations and loosely fit the supplied spacers and bolts as outlined in the Vortech installation manual. Using the belt routing guide provided with the kit, loosely route the new belt, leaving enough slack for the supercharger. It’s all starting to come together! Loosely mount the supercharger mounting bracket and supercharger onto the front of the motor using the guidelines in the installation guide. Once mounted, finish routing the belt and tighten all of the mounting bracket bolts and the belt tension. Once finished, locate and install the supplied mounting bracket stiffener to the factory cam covers. Finally, mount the supplied air box support bracket to the driver’s side frame rail.

Next, replace the OEM MAP sensor with the supplied replacement and splice the supplied check valve into the OEM breather hose. All that’s left to install from the new kit is the air intake. Locate the intake and accompanying parts and simply bolt it to the mounting brackets connecting it to the supercharger inlet. Once positioned, tighten the provided hose clamps. Locate the OEM breather hose again and attach the supplied hose union, then attach the hose to the new air box, routing it away from sharp edges and moving parts that may damage it. Cut the length of the hose if necessary. Take a good look at everything, because you’re all done! Make sure everything is tight and nothing is rubbing on anything it shouldn’t be.

GARRY FINISHES THE ACOUSTIC TREATMENTS IN HIS LISTENING ROOM. To

measure the frequency response of a loudspeaker accurately, one must eliminate the reflections of sound that come off the spea er and bounce off the walls, floor and ceiling be ore being picked up by the measurement microphone. To eliminate these reflections, I built a semi-anechoic chamber which fil ers all reflections d wn to approximately 8 0Hz. For measurements below 80Hz, I use a different technique and splice the results together. The anechoic space is made by creating 10-foot-high walls with special acoustic foam wedges that are over a foot thick. These foam walls absorb all the sound that hits them, and thereby prevent reflections rom developing. The “ceiling” and floor is also treated with special sound absorbing panels 54

that perform the same function. When you stand in the middle of this space and speak, it sounds quite strange, because there are no reflections of our voice and it can freak some people out. The listening area where I do my evaluations is treated with custom absorbtive panels that are fastened to the walls and ceiling in strategic areas. The goal for a listening environment is not to remove all the reflections, but o control the amount of reflections and the ra e at which they decay by 60 dB. This decay rate is called the RT60 time, or reverberation time of the room. It is a critical part of what makes a room sound good. I use special measurement equipment to measure the RT60 time of the room as I place the treatments. It’s important to use the proper amount of acoustic treatment and place it correctly for the particular space you are setting up. Each room has vastly different requirements.

LEGACY HOSAKA TUNING FACTORY MAY NO LONGER EXSIST BUT ITS LEGACY LIVES ON STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM ZILLIN

T

imes are still tough in the Japanese tuning world. Many workshops are struggling and more than a few of the smaller tuners are closing their doors due to rising costs and falling sales. The epidemic of knock-off parts coming out of China and Taiwan have also had a huge negative impact. My personal opinion on that particular issue is that we should always support those who have stood as pioneers for decades and buy original. One of the more beloved brands to succumb to the financial problems in the industry was Hosaka Tuning Factory. Hosaka san hasn’t been in the best health lately and this surely must have compounded the situation to the point that by the time you read this, HTF will have closed its doors for good. While all this is truly regrettable, the amazing 2008 model R35 you see here was one of the last builds put together by HTF and is a testament to the care they put into each creation. It’s a weapon in looks as much as performance. Showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year, it drew a constant stream of admirers and was on my top 10 list of must-shoot cars for the first quarter of the year. Owner, Mr. Miyakawa, became a fan of HTF’s approaches to tuning after meeting Hosaka san in Osaka during an event some years back. He’s always been a GT-R fan, having upgraded from an R32 GT-R to an R34 V-Spec in a similarly aggressive state of tune. With the R35 purchased in 2011, Miyakawa then spared no expense in making what eventually became one of the most aggressive looking R35’s to grace Japanese roads and eventually, circuits. At the heart of the matter, the VR38DETT has benefitted from some key off-the-shelf ingredients, including a tried and tested HKS 1,000 hp kit. The car actually makes good on the threat though, packing an incredible 1,100 hp and 795 lb-ft with the boost wound right up. A raft of supporting elements also come from HKS, including a cooling system that keeps the lifeblood temperatures of the “Achilles Heel” of the R35 - the transmission - stable.

BORN

LEGACY Other HKS goodies added to the drivetrain include the addition of larger capacity twin intercoolers and a freer flowing transmission pan. Motul oils have been added for both major components. With all this mechanical madness going on, go-juice and its delivery are crucial, with the prudent use of 560cc 2012 model R35 injectors backed up by an HKS surge tank. Dumping exhaust gasses from the fire breathing powerplant is a completely bespoke titanium exhaust system from manifold to exhaust tips, created by HTF. The brains behind the entire process consists of the relatively simple arrangement: an HKS EVC reading from a specially tuned Hosaka tuned ECU that has a range of maps installed depending on the circumstance. All the power in the world is useless though, without the right additions to what holds, stops and grips the violence. On the braking side of matters, things are just as serious.

Brembo mono-block 6 pot calipers have been deployed up front which were then mated to HTF’s own 410 millimeter, two piece, slotted and vented rotors and matching pads. Out back, the calipers remain standard since the rear factory calipers are known to provide enough stopping force but HTF installed their own 400 millimeter rotors combined with Endless pads just to make certain. Since Miyakawa’s GT-R is as much for the street as it is for the circuit, it had to ride well enough to balance the duties and HTF had a solution with its custom tuned coil-overs for each corner, wound to 25 kilograms at the front and 16 kilograms at the rear. Without a doubt though, one of the single biggest points of interest is the way the car looks. We’re all used to hearing and reading about big numbers but if you’re on a carbon fiber diet, this car is going to prove gluttonous. The stuff is everywhere and the entire visual appearance was the result of a connection between Miyakawa and American import specialist, Bulletproof Automotive’s Ben Shaeffer; a connection provided by Hosaka san himself.

FEBRUARY Ben recommended Hong Kong’s, Top Racing, to provide the necessary weight savings and visual appeal, with virtually every surface of the car is covered in the glossy, expensive material. The additional parts resulted in an overall subtraction of 60 kilograms from the total weight of the car, which is crucial for anyone chasing speed or times especially when it comes to the super-heavyweight R35. It also wouldn’t surprise me if many look at the massive wing on the car and mutter an expletive or two. Remember though, in the Japanese tuning world, function trumps form. For that reason and also because being a car enthusiast is about getting your 64

hands dirty, Miyakawa sat down and thrashed out the designs for the rear elements you see, starting with the uprights. They’re completely original, bespoke aluminum items mounted directly to the chassis and topped with that massive rear wing element that incidentally was a Carbon-Kevlar rescue item no one else wanted! Rounding out this intense package is a set of RAYS forged G12 20 inch multi-spoke rims, each a 12J on each corner. The rims were then wrapped in Pirelli 315/35 P-Zero boots but Miyakawa mentioned that the Pirelli rubber is nowhere near as good as his Dunlop boots. This is fine though because RAYS Japan have an arrangement with

Miyakawa that allows his GT-R to wear a range of “shoes” depending on the situation! You don’t spend over $150,000 dollars on top of a base R35 without the intention of going racing. In the hands of pro development driver Yasu Kikuchi, the car manages to dip into the 59-second range at Tsukuba circuit and with half the power, incredibly, managed a 1.57 second lap around Fuji Speedway and a max speed of 290 km/h down the front straight. The target is a 1.50 so a lot of development needs to take place for that to happen. Miyakawa is also toying with the idea of heading to the high speed circuit of Nardo next year to unleash 1,100 angry horses and see just how fast the

YEAR

2013

car can go. I ask Miyakawa why he chose HTF over other tuners and he replies, “Hosaka san is a very kind man. His cars are easy to drive and even with this level of power, are not frigtening to take control of and go fast in.” Juxtaposed against the sublime, pink cherry blossoms of a Japanese spring, Miyakawa’s R35 cuts a formidable but serene shape. This time of year is always bittersweet for us in Japan because the blossoms appear suddenly and merely two weeks later, they are gone. Much like the passing of Hosaka Tuning Factory, Miyakawa knows his R35 must be enjoyed to the max while it’s still in full bloom.

PASMAG Exclusive Interview

Ken Block, Master of Hoonigans Interview & Photography by Michael Finger

Ken Block is a hard man to catch. But thanks to the entire Hoonigan Racing Division and Michael Finger, our PAS man on the ground, we catch up with one of the most influential action sports heroes of all time at the Clipsal 500 Australian V8 Supercars event in Adelaide.

What Gymkhana video was the most technically challenging?

KB: The most technical one is really Gymkhana 4, because everything was so tight. You know, we were dealing with Universal Studios, which only had small areas to play in. And then I did stuff with moving forklifts. So that was really difficult with the tight conditions and difficult tricks. On top of that it was my first event really doing something with that new car, what we call the H.F.H.V., and we only had one day of testing for that car before Gymkhana, before I actually made that video. It was really difficult getting adapted to a brand new car, but then driving it dangerously and driving it in tight and situations. It was fun, definitely the most nerve-racking of all those videos.

Untitled-5 March 2013115.08.indd 5

MARCH2013 So was that also the scariest Gymkhana video to make?

KB: Well, scary is a different question! (laughing) Gymkhana 3 was probably the scariest. You know, going up and playing on that wall (banked oval) and, when you get the car on an angle, the car and g-forces are just so affected that it really kind of throws everything off and makes things difficult. Some of the stuff in Gymkhana 3 was actually the scariest.

Just how dangerous are making these videos?

KB: Going the speeds we go out in the forest rallying is much more dangerous. But the things that don’t really get across on camera are things like, you know, if I hit a curb, like I hit a curb in (the last two videos), how it can just destroy the insides of the car because of all that force being transferred into the car. From just a curb, you know, it’s like hitting a brick wall when you hit a curb. Sometimes it can be quite dangerous even though it doesn’t look that bad. And that’s what Gymkhana 4 was really all about.

JDM ISSUE HITS THE STANDS!

Life isn’t supposed to be easy. Money or not, you face plenty of challenges along the way. When you want something, never expect it to be handed over without putting the work in. More often than not, the more pain you endure during the journey, the sweeter the reward is in the end. That’s how Rob Kochis of West Covina, California felt when he went on a seemingly endless quest to build his dream FR-S. As many stories from diehard car dudes and dudettes go, Kochis started gathering parts for his FR-S before he actually owned it. Fortunately, he is no stranger to fixing up cars and knew which path to follow. Since being featured on our April cover, it might look like the only change to the FR-S is a new set of Forgestar F14F step-lip gold chrome wheels and tires, but that’s just what you see at first glance. The cage underwent a copper dip courtesy of Long Beach Auto Tech, the engine bay is now full carbon fiber thanks to Password:JDM and a 1.5-way LSD was added by KAAZ USA. FA20CLUB, Deatschwerks, Jordan Innovations and Vortech also helped with a Flexfuel kit, so it now makes more than 300 whp and is apparently even better to drive. “Words cannot describe the rush you get when flooring the gas pedal in this car,” Kochis says. His journey continues, so if you want to follow along check out @staycrushing on Instagram.

FORMULA D ROUND 1: STREETS OF LONG BEACH SEASON OPENER & 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY LONG BEACH, CA LONG BEACH GP STREET COURSE

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON

Formula Drift kicks off its 10th season in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 20,000. With several substantial changes to rules, sponsorships and cars in the off-season, fans and teams anxiously await to see how things will shake out at the ultra-competitive course. One of the biggest changes is the new qualifying format, which determines the Top 16 qualifying drivers after the first run and the second 16 after the second run. The format leads to some of the most familiar names at the top of the grid. In the final four, Daijiro Yoshihara knocks out the BMW of Chelsea Denofa, while Vaughn Gittin Jr. is too much for Chris Forsberg’s 370Z. Forsberg takes the final podium spot over Denofa, who is still happy with a career-best fourth place finish. Facing off against Jr., Yoshihara powers through for his eighth career victory – his first at Long Beach and third consecutive podium. Jr. earns his second-career podium at Long Beach, avenging his 2012 finish in the Top 32 and failure to qualify in 2011. For Forsberg, the podium is his second-ever at the track after taking the win in 2008.

Formula D is one of the most unique motorsports in the world. The variety of cars, tire manufacturers, ages and ethnicities of the drivers, and track locations is perhaps more diverse than any other type of motorsport. We take a look at some of the numbers that have helped shape the premier drifting rank in the U.S.

P A S M O V E S T O I T S N E W O F F I C E ! Out with the old and in with the new!

Swankier, hipper and in the city – we’re officially in Liberty Village, surrounded by some of the coolest bars and restaurants Toronto has to offer.

VINTAGE HOUSIN’ Our new office is located in a 100+ year old warehouse that has its original exterior in tact. The building is also home to some cool graphic design and PR firms.

SAY CHEESE! Our hard-working staff(well, half the staff, the others were actually working) take a break from PASMAG operations to pose in front of our new digs in Liberty Village Monster delivery girls included!

I connect the 16-MJ1.2200 to my trusty Audio Precision and measure the actual performance specs. As I expect from my listening session, the amp measures well and easily exceeds its published performance numbers. It actually makes significantly more power than advertised, indeed proving to be a very efficient design.

YEAR

2013

SCION STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON

In 2013, Scion celebrates 10 years as an automotive brand in the U.S., and its sixth year as part of the Formula D grid. What started as a single RWD-converted tC has turned into four Scion FR-S cars on grid, with another car bearing the same exo-skeleton, albeit technically a Subaru. Since its foray into drifting in 2008, Scion has accrued three event wins and 12 total podiums, placing them fifth overall in all-time stats by a car manufacturer. Three different drivers have earned hardware for the brand, with Frederic Aasbo the most recent with a third-place finish in his 2014 tC in Seattle. Here are the profiles of the four (+1 BRZ) drivers piloting Scion cars.

PREVIOUS RIDES

GREDDY PERFORMANCE SCION RACING FR˜S

In 2008 Gushi signed on with Scion Racing. His RS-R tC was the first-ever RWD-converted tC. The stock tC had 161 hp, but Gushi’s was pushing more than 400!

Age: 26 // Hometown: SAN GABRIEL VALLEY, CA // Daily Driver: SCION FR˜S// Race Motor: GREDDY TURBOCHARGED 4-CYLINDER 4˜CYLINDER BOXER // Previous race car: SCION RACING TC °SCION’S FIRST˜EVER DRIFT CAR˛ The longest-standing member of the Scion Racing family, Gushi has brought the brand loads of success over the years. This year’s FR-S is powered by a GReddy R E W Racing-built EJ257 motor initially designed for the PO HORSE Subaru STI, with a plethora of upgrades internally designed for the rigors of drifting. While the initial plan was to build the factory FA20 motor, the short timeline prior to the 2012 season relegated the team to using an off-the-shelf powerplant that the GReddy team had experience tuning. Future plans may allow the team to move back to the FA20 motor, depending on competitiveness.

Age: 28 // Hometown: SKI, NORWAY // Daily Driver: SCION FR˜S// Race Motor: TOYOTA 2AR˜FE TURBOCHARGED WITH NITROUS // Previous race car: TOYOTA SUPRA The 2010 rookie-of-the-year has found a home with Papadakis Racing, who grew their existing partnership from running Tanner Foust’s V8-powered Scion tC into the current 2AR-powered tC2. Aasbo’s motor has been tuned well north of 800 hp, with a Borg-Warner turbo that is spooled by nitrous for added drivability. Aasbo’s podium in Seattle is the lone podium for Scion this season, although the team has their eyes set on earning the first championship for the Scion brand. Aasbo has HO also built a 2JZ-powered Toyota 86 which he uses in Norway, and previously has campaigned a pair of Toyota Supras - also 2JZ powered. Papadakis Racing tuned the car with that in mind, aiming to keep the drivability of the inline-6 motor that Aasbo was used to, but in a smaller, lighter package.

Similar to Aasbo’s tC, Angelo’s FR-S utilizes a 2AZ motor which came out of Ken Gushi’s former Scion tC chassis that Angelo took over for the 2012 season. The motor has a new Garrett turbo and a 100-shot of Nitrous which Angelo tells us adds much more HO power and torque than stated since it is before the turbo inlet. Running on a relatively-small budget, Angelo’s build was initiated from an FR-S that fell victim to Hurricane Sandy, and the transplanted motor was the quickest way for the team to make the first round of competition in Long Beach back in April. Angelo has continued to find more grip and horsepower with his FR-S setup, and anticipates the car becoming more competitive as the team becomes more familiar with the new chassis setup.

0 70RSEPOWER

PREVIOUS RIDE Angelo stopped competing in 2009 to become FD’s Technical Manager and Judge, but returned last year in the 2008 tC. This year he has an additional 100 hp and a new FR-S.

HONORABLE MENTION TANNER FOUST

Scion and Foust were a formidable 1-2 punch. Foust took the 2007 & ‘08 titles, and drove this tC to the runner-up position in 2010.

TOSHIKI YOSHIOKA

GT NET SUBARU BRZ

Age: 36 // Hometown: HIROSHIMA, JAPAN // Race Motor: TOMEI GENESIS BOXER // Previous race car: TOYOTA COROLLA It’s no secret the Subaru BRZ is not really a Scion, but we chose to profile it as it carries body panels that were made in the same factory as the Scion. Yoshioka’s car is powered by a Tomei Genesis EJ257 crate motor, which is the same HO style of motor that powers Gushi’s FR-S. Yoshioka showed the versatility of both the engine and suspension setup by competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year, finishing with a respectable time despite driving through snow, sleet, and rain. Yoshioka is on a two-year plan, hoping to develop the chassis slowly over those seasons before evaluating the program further. He is also the only driver to win a Formula D event in a Toyota, Scion’s parent company.

RETAKS BACKPACKS MAXXIS FR-S FR˜S

Age: 28 // Hometown: DERRY, NJ // Daily Driver: 1JZ˜POWERED S13// Race Motor: STROKED 2JZ˜GTE Although not officially backed by Scion, Ryan Tuerck’s FR-S has been one of the most watched builds in the off-season as it utilizes the famed Toyota 2JZ-GTE motor from the Toyota Supra. Built by Portland Speed Industries out of HO Portland, OR, the car has proved to be quite competitive despite being built on a much more privateer budget compared to most cars on the grid. The Brian Crower-stroked 2JZ motor has been tuned conservatively to over 650 hp (and recently tuned with E85 fuel), with more power available once the suspension and grip gets dialed in. He previously finished second in the championship in 2009, and hopes the FR-S will take home a championship or two in the coming years.

(CONT.)...WE ALSO HAVE AN AMAZING CONVO WITH THE QUINTESSENTIAL MOVIE STAR/GEARHEAD PAUL WALKER IN ANTICIPATION OF THE LATEST FAST AND THE FURIOUS MOVIE, WHERE HE GIVES US SOME INSIGHT ON HIS CALIFORNIA AUTO SHOP, AE PERFORMANCE. FROM HIS BOSS 302S TO THE PORSCHE 997 GT3 RS, THIS GUY KNOWS THE INS AND OUTS OF CARS AND DRIVING BETTER THAN ANYONE. DON’T BELIEVE US? HE WAS THE ONLY GUY IN THE MAIN CAST DOING HIS OWN STUNTS, AND HE’S GOT THE BATTLE WOUNDS TO PROVE IT. DO YOU DO MANY OF YOUR OWN STUNTS? I do plenty, but the big jumps, crashes and that sort of thing they don’t let me do. WHO IS YOUR MOST REGULAR STUNT DOUBLE? PW: His name is Oakley Lehman. We went to high school together. I love that we went to high school together. I’ve known him my whole life. He’d always wanted to be a stunt man and I was doing Joy Ride and managed to get him on as my stunt double.

SO, YOU’RE A TRUCK GUY? PW: I’m an everything guy. WHAT’S THE BEST CAR YOU’VE EVER OWNED? It depends on what category, but as far as touring cars, I really like my 2012 CLS 63 AMG. It’s a cool car but I’m a Porsche guy – I have a 4-liter Porsche 911 GT3 RS. I KNOW YOU HAVE A PERFORMANCE SHOP. TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT. PW: I have a performance shop called AE Performance and we do race prep and all that stuff out in Valencia. So I have a couple partners and we all race together. It’s a family business basically. We brought in friends and people coming from different economic backgrounds, let’s just say, but it’s cool because everyone gets to have their cake and eat it too. We manufacture stuff too, like exhaust systems for Porsches and BMWs. We tinker with it all. We’re definitely not a niche business. I’m big into 4x4 so we do a lot of fabrication and roll cages for Baja and that sort of thing too.

FORMULA D ROUND 2: ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP BRASELTON, GA ROAD ATLANTA

STORY BY JACOB LEVETON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW JENNINGS

Celebrating its 10th year of competition, Formula D rolls into Atlanta for the second round. Road Atlanta was home to the first-ever Formula D competition in April 2004 and has returned every year since. The 10-turn complex is said to be one of the best venues on the FD circuit because of the extreme elevation change and rowdy-yet-knowledgeable spectators who have been attending drifting events for years. In the initial Top 32 round of tandems, the championship standings get an early shakeup as Long Beach champion Dai Yoshihara is taken out by Conrad Grunewald and Chelsea Denofa, fresh off of a fourth place finish in Long Beach. One of the most controversial runs comes in the Top 8 round, when a collision sees Vaughn Gittin, Jr. drive his Mustang over the front end of Frederic Aasbo’s tC. The collision looks scary, but no major parts are damaged on either car. The showdown results in a One-More-Time round before Gittin, Jr. moves on. He finishes in third place - his second career podium in Atlanta since 2010 when he won the championship. Gittin’s only loss in tandem came at the hands of defending Formula D Champion Daigo Saito in the Final Four. Saito takes the win this time in his Lexus SC430, defeating Falken Tire’s Darren McNamara in the final round.

MOVIE RELEASE

Fast & Furious 6 hits theatres Many people may not know, but The Fast and the Furious (2001) was actually the second movie released under that title. The first film was released in 1955 and featured John Ireland, and Academy Award-winner Dorothy Malone. The name was purchased for the modern version, and has become one of the most successful car movie franchises to ever hit the big screen.

The qualification rounds for the Drift Mania Canadian Championship move to a knockout format for 2013, meaning if you make it to the Top 8 on your first pass you are guaranteed to compete in the Top 16 Main Event. Marc Landreville actually borrows Pro Am driver Johnathan Guitard’s Lexus to qualify since he doesn’t trust the reliability of his car, and he manages a decent position. Mike Pollard has transmission issues which end up being the nail in the coffin, while

the top qualifying spot goes to Jo Thifault in his Corolla. Francis Tasse takes second in his new supercharged 950 hp V8 FD RX7, while Pat Cyr is third in his Corolla. It is the first round, but right out of the gate Eric Paradis is taking no prisoners in his S13. The Top 4 comes down to Pat Cyr, Paradis, Bob Patinka and Marc Landreville, and after the smoke settles, Cyr takes the winners’ check, followed by Landreville and Paradis. It is a great final sendoff for Cyr’s old Corolla!

Michaud takes the win against Briggs for third place, leaving the battle for first between Cyr and Lemoine, who leads first while Cyr has a surprising spin. On Pat’s lead run he takes a decent lead over Lemoine, but it is not enough to overcome his spin. Lemoine gets his first DMCC pro win in his awesomely loud drift truck.

JL AUDIO 10TW3-D4 SUBWOOFER REVIEW By Garry Springgay

The JL Audio W3 subwoofers have earned a reputation for excellent sound quality, tonal accuracy and reliability. This shallow version not only upholds that tradition, but perhaps builds the reputation of providing quality bass in places nobody expected a true high performance woofer system to ever fit. If you are tight on space, but demanding when it comes to the quality of your music, drop by your local JL Audio dealer and ask to audition one of these babies for yourself. You can thank us later. For more information on the JL Audio 10TW3-D4 and all other JL Audio products, check them out online at www.JLAudio.com.

FORMULA D ROUND 5: THROWDOWN EVERGREEN SPEEDWAY MONROE, WA

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON

The Final 4 brings some drama as a debeaded tire prevents Odi Bakchis a trip to the final round, and a second de-beaded tire causes him to lose his consolation battle with Frederic Aasbo. Aasbo found himself in the consolation round after a miss shift caused an at-fault collision with Forsberg and he was unable to fix his car within the five-minute competition time out. Facing off against Aurimas Bakchis in the consolation round, Aasbo earns his second-career podium at the same track he won his first podium two years earlier. In the final, Mike Essa has a few minor mistakes against Chris Forsberg which costs him the win, but he finishes in a strong second. Throwdown Results 1. Chris Forsberg | NOS Energy Drink / Hankook Nissan 370Z | Winner 2. Michael Essa | GSR Autosport / Yokohama BMW M3 | Second Place 3. Fredric Aasbo | Hankook Tire Scion Racing tC | Third Place

DMCC ROUND 4 VICTORIAVILLE, QC

VICTORIAVILLE RACEWAY

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY ALAN GLOVER

One of the most exciting stops on the DMCC schedule is Victoriaville, because it is the only track on the schedule that isn’t actually a racetrack. The open lot is made into one of the best and tightest drift circuits in the series. The battles are intense with door-on-door action and a ton of wrecks. The Final 4 comes down the the same top four qualifiers. Marc Landreville (1994 240SX) faces Tanner Munson (1991 240SX), and on Munson’s lead run he goes high and into the wall. Landreville moves on to face his buddy Francis Tasse for top podium honors, and when the smoke clears Tasse and his RX-7 is declared the winner. 108 » PERFORMANCE AUTO & SOUND

Don’t let a dead battery hold you back! Never worry about the battery in your vehicle again. Just plug in a CTEK smart charger and walk away. CTEK chargers constantly monitor the battery, and apply the correct charge, so your battery is always in optimal condition when you need it. CTEK chargers are the easiest way to recondition and maintain your battery extending battery life. Ideal for cars, trucks, motorcycles, personal watercraft, sleds, boats, even lawn equipment, or anything else that has a 12V battery.

AUTOMOTIVE DATA SOLUTIONS INC. STARTS SHIPPING THE IDATASTART – THE FIRST DEPENDABLE STARTER FOR BMW AND MINI

BY DAVID MACKINNON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIANCARLO PAWELEC INSTALLATION | MASS ELECTRONICS - RICHMOND HILL, ON

The remote start industry moves fast and furiously. Companies are always working on offering integration solutions for more cars, allowing retailers to install remote start and security systems safely and reliably. The iDatalink ADS-BM1 is a hot new product for this season, and we thought it would only be fitting o walk you through the basic concept of how it works and how it would be installed in your vehicle.

1

Our victim, a slick BMW wanting remote start powers.

2

The ADS-BM1 ready for assembly and programming.

3

The cover of the ADS-RS2-BM1 main module being removed.

4

The ADS-XP-BM1 being inserted into the dedicated docking port.

The ADS-BM1 is the first dependable remote start interface system for most BMW and MINI models from 2005 to 2013, including the 1 Series, 3 Series, X1, X5, X6, Clubman, Cooper, Cooper S and more! The ADS-BM1 can operate on its own to remotely start your car. All you need to do is press the OEM remote lock button three times in quick succession and the car will start. There’s no need for extra remotes if you don’t want them. Should you want more range, you can add a remote package which will provide up to one extra mile of coverage. The ADS-BM1 can also interface with many of the smartphone controlled telematics systems, and even works with long range aftermarket remote start systems! The ADS-BM1 is a complete and elegant design. Two modules nest together to provide all the communication and processing functions required to start the vehicle. The system includes high quality T-harnesses, which will save the installer from having to cut any wires in your vehicle in order to perform the installation. The harnesses use OEM quality connectors to provide a secure and reliable connection to the vehicle’s wiring. How does it work? The ADS-BM1 communicates with your vehicle’s data bus. It monitors commands sent from the factory remote control. Once it reads the lock command has been given three times in quick succession, it begins to send messages to the vehicle computer. It tells the computer that it is a valid key (a process that was set up during the installation), then it turns the ignition and accessory circuits on and commands the vehicle to start. It monitors the door pins and parking brake during start up and while running, and will not start the engine if a door is open or shut it down if the brake is pressed without the vehicle key being detected. Before we start to look at the installation, be advised that in spite of the elegance and simplicity of this product, it is NOT designed for a do-ityourself installation. The dealer has a special programming cable and access to a dedicated support website required during the installation in order to properly configure the system to work with your car.

The system is now assembled and ready for programming.

The installer uses a dedicated programming cable in conjunction with web-based software to configure the two modules for your specific year, make and model of vehicle.

Connections are made to the unit in a specific order to allow it to integrate to the vehicle properly.

Speaker, lights and any other connectors need to be carefully disconnected during disassembly.

The lower dash panel is removed.

12

The first stage of the installation is complete and the programming process begins.

10

The installer now connects the system into the factory wiring.

The installer goes back to the computer to complete the configuration and programming process.

Old School Special Issue hits newsstands

When deciding on a cover car for the Old School Special, there was little doubt we wanted to feature the gorgeously preserved

Fatlace 1972 Nissan Skyline GT2000

AUGUST2013 NISSAN SKYLINE HERITAGE

01

Dating back to the 1970s, the Skyline brand has long been one of the winningest names in motorsports. Because US law limits the importing of any car newer than 25 years into the country (compared to 15 years in Canada), it’s rare to see a Skyline on the streets. It’s rare to find an enthusiast who is interested in spending big money to bring an old car over that is loud, slow and likely rough around the edges with more headaches than heroics. However, the work Mark Arcenal has put into his 1972 Skyline GT2000 makes its appearance on the cover well-deserved. Being sure to avoid unnecessary modern modifications, Arcenal says the fully-original interior is not worth swapping for any modern amenities. “The awesome thing about old cars in general is the smell of ‘old,’” he says. “You simply don’t get that anymore. Well, I don’t know if the smell is really cool, but it’s definitely distinct!” In addition to the Hakosuka, we cover some other worthy classics, including a ridiculous 1970s Datsun 240Z, an orange Corolla Levin, and a sibling pair of AE86s. Yes please.

The oval shape with a blue background, on which there are six stars – originates from the star cluster Pleiades, which translates into Japanese as Subaru.

Over 3,000 cars and spectators showed up to the weekly Krispy Kreme Tuesday meet in Burbank, California. Dubbed “The Last Exile,” the gathering filled up the entire parking lot at Empire Center. In this photo (taken by Ross Benson), you see a Burbank police cruiser sitting on high alert in case of any trouble makers. No arrests were reported, but over 100 vehicle citations were handed out for various infractions. Krispy Kreme stores across North America produce more than 5 million donuts per day and more than 2 billion donuts per year.

FOR SOME REASON, THE BEST TUNER CARS ARE OFTEN THE ONES THAT WERE PURCHASED WITH LITTLE TO NO PLANNING IN MIND. Case in point, Jacob Reining’s Hyundai Genesis 2.0T Track Edition has a Felgen Outlet Award-winning wheel and tire package like no other. We get a peek at one of the hottest and tightest packages in the lower 48. Keeping with the theme of the issue, we also include install guides for a Genesis turbocharger and FR-S supercharger, and if that wasn’t enough, Project BMW 330Ci gets an HSD coilover and Sprint Booster install.

The Felgen Outlet only gives out 20 Awards for the best wheel & tire combination per year. The award is a hand-made scale model of a Schmidt H-Line 3-piece wheel. For a video on how it’s made, follow the link: vimeo.com/41543554

DMCC ROUND 8: FINALS SANAIR SUPER SPEEDWAY SAINT-PIE, QC Story & Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover

The 8th and final round of the 2013 DMCC season is held at the Sanair race track just south of Montreal. With the Pro AM season wrapped up after round seven, the top Pro Am drivers of the season are invited to round eight to compete with the pro drivers. What makes it more interesting – there are more drivers then usual. The event is a Top 16 competition, meaning drivers really have to push in order to make it into the finals. The practice/qualification day starts off wet and cold. Practice goes but the cold track temperatures catch a few people and send them into the wall. The two most notable are Philippe Bruyer (Toyota Soarer) and Pat Cyr (FR-S). Both cars finish the day in their trailers. Meanwhile, Alex Michaud qualifies in 1st place for the second time in a row.

2 0

The Final 4 comes down to Francis Tasse (who locks down the 2013 Championship just by making it in), Pro Am driver Jonathan Guitard, 2013 Pro Am champion Martin Langlois and Kevin Morin. It comes down to Tass and Guitard in the Final 2; the first battle is close and the judges call a OneMore-Time battle. The drivers actually take each others cars back to the pits,, driving the crowd wild. After the final battle, the judges award Guitard with his first DMCC win.

TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY FORT WORTH, TX Formula DRIFT enters Texas Motor Speedway for the first time. Mike Essa takes his GSR Autosport / Yokohama BMW M3 to the winner’s circle and leads the Pro Championship points chase going into the final competition of the 2013 season. The Showdown round sees FD return to Texas for the first time since 2005. Racing under the night sky, the new track proves to be challenging as one of the fastest tracks on the circuit and one of the most technical for tandem drifting. The final battle pits Essa against Matt Field in the CX Racing / Maxxis / Blacktrax Nissan 240SX. Essa takes the fight to Field for his second victory of the season and second straight podium finish. It is Field’s first podium finish of his Formula DRIFT career. “First year here at this track and the course was just insane with sustained speed throughout. It was just crazy out there, but we were able to take home the win,” says Essa. “Our GSR Autosport BMW E46 with Wisefab suspension and Bilstein suspension along with Yokohama Tires helped make this an amazing event for us. We are leading the points right now by about 15 points heading into Irwindale and we have a shot at the Championship which is not what we expected entering this season with a new car and can’t be more happy with the results.”

49 states, three provinces and over 10,000 miles... In less than 10 days!

I did it! I manage the 48-plus in 8.5 days and hit the 10,200 mile mark at Dafoe, Saskatchewan with about five hours left on the 10 day clock. I cut it much closer than I originally planned, but in the end, it doesn’t matter if I had 5 hours or 50 hours left. The last day was the second-longest of the ride, at 1,226 miles (19 hours) from Smithers, British Columbia to Yorkton, Saskatchewan. I’m now enjoying a few wellearned days of R&R at my old stomping grounds. The ST has been serviced, fresh Dunlops installed and the broken foot peg is replaced. The shifter has also been straightened, thanks to my buddy Rick. I plan to leave for home Monday morning, and be home Tuesday night. It will be a much more relaxed pace, with only 1,800 miles to ride in two days.

Q&A

1

Zodiac: I’m a Gemini, and we are known for being rather chatty. I was actually given the nickname “Magpie” when I was younger. Apparently, the magpie likes to make noise too.

Fitness: I do a mixture of light cardio and strength training 5-6 days a week. I have a naturally curvy body, so I consider myself lucky in that respect.

First Impressions: Attitude. You could look like Channing Tatum, but if you have a bad attitude, I wouldn’t give you the time of the day. Status: Hopeless Romantic.
