ISSUE PREVIEW

HEY GOOD LOOKIN’

H

ey, welcome back! You look great! Hair cut? Been working out? PASMAG is back at it again and we look great too (as usual). As a good looking person yourself, you know it takes a lot more than staring at yourself in the mirror and trying to get the perfect angle for your selfie to get people to notice you. That’s what we aimed for with this issue, we wanted to be a showstopper. What better way to be one than to fill our pages with rides that leave people rubber-necking? We start things off with our always industrious and illustrious columnists. Our resident audiophile, Gary Springgay, has been busy testing the latest to upgrade your ride and protect your wallet, but he also ticks down all the improvements that have been made in car stereos since the birth of the CD. Cabe Sipes also weighs in, teaching us about different audio formats and how to best listen to them in your car. Are you into FD, but just can’t wrap your head around Pro 2? Jacob Leveton, a.k.a. the drift doctor, fills us in and tells us just who to keep an eye on.

CONNECT

Also, be on the lookout for Jacob’s feature on the newest, most radical car in the FD series: Dai Yoshihara’s 7.0-liter LS-equipped Subaru BRZ. Our Trending section has more of the latest news than you can shake a hashtag at. KDM Stance’s own Merf Feliciano tells us about the birth of the KDM scene in North America. We tell you what I Love Driving Slow and Nostalgic Grains are all about and even quell your fears on this whole banning of Hellaflush in Quebec. If you want to know what the next big thing is, we’ve scoped out the best of the best from Offset Kings, Eurokracy, SPOCOM and more in the Spotter’s Guide and scoured social media for what is truly trending. The featured event is Waterfest in its 20th anniversary, so prepare for the Euro invasion on a grand scale. As always, we have the latest and greatest products in out Buyers Guides to help make your next mod decision a little easier. Did you catch that cover shot? Nice caboose, eh? That flawless R35 belongs to J.J. Dubec, who snagged the second LB Performance kit in Canada, and has the most impressive audio install we’ve seen in a long time. Keeping up the tempo, our fourth place

competitor from last year’s Tuner Battlegrounds, Frank Daniels, gets his time to shine with his rebooted Camaro SS. Kenny Tran is the owner of Jotech Motorsports, a renowned tuner, and the latest subject of PASMAG’s ongoing Legends series. Take a peek behind the scenes and learn about the magic that goes on at the monster making factory that is Jotech. Ken Gushi also makes an appearance this issue to take a look at turbocharging the Scion FR-S. Gushi wanted some extra power on his own ride and GReddy just happened to have the answer. Follow him, step-by-step, as he and the team at GReddy install its Tuner Turbo kit. Sounding good, looking good – we’re going all out here at PASMAG. So, take a break from the selfies, look at something with #nofilter, and take in the best that the tuning world has to offer this month. Thanks for picking us up and we hope you enjoy. Indulge a little, we’re gluten-free.

HELLAFLUSH GETS SAAQ’D By Micky Slinger | Photography by Jeremy Alan Glover

Hellaflush (hel·ə f lʌʃ) noun

Hellaflush is an aesthetic practice achieved at the expense of handling and maneuverability of a vehicle. This is a method which comprises: 1. The lowering of the suspension of a vehicle; 2. Installation of oversized wheels and higher-than-original offset rims; 3. The mounting of tires that are too narrow for the rim (stretching). These changes, which affect the suspension geometry of the vehicle, are usually observed by the presence of exaggerated negative camber.”

SACREBLEU, HELLAFLUSH EST MORT! After getting over the fact that a government body just used the term “Hellaflush,” enthusiasts everywhere were taken aback by the SAAQ’s (Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec) ruling that Hellaflush cars are now banned in the province. As well as their dislike of the stance genre, SAAQ also mentions that tires that make contact with any other parts on the vehicle will not be tolerated in the French-speaking area of the Great White North. Now, before you lose your head, let’s get some things straight. Yes, SAAQ says that the lowering of a vehicle and installation of larger wheels with non-OEM offsets fall into “Hellaflush.” They’re right. Does this mean that you have to revert back to granny-spec right after you just got those fresh coilovers? No! What SAAQ is worried about is road safety. Camber, of the extreme negative variety especially, has been proven to completely change the suspension geometry in a street vehicle for the worse. The manufacturer sends the vehicle out of the factory with the most beneficial suspension setup for that model. Essentially making that suspension go outside of its comfort zone is not safe at all in the reliability and

maneuverability departments. The other worrisome part of Le Hellaflush out in Québec is tire stretching. Stretching a narrower tire onto a wider wheel can definitely leave an impression and score some points with the right crowd, just not with the cops. When a tire is stretched, it reduces its contact patch with the road. You don’t need a PHD to see that reduced contact with your driving surface is bad news. When those tires are constantly rubbing it can cause irregular wear, which again, is not good for grip on the road or reliability. If one were to be caught with any of these modifications in Québec, your vehicle is then subject to be sent for an inspection, which doesn’t just go over your suspension. They go under your hood, in your trunk, everywhere. Hopefully there wasn’t anything else you were trying to hide from the authorities. In the end, SAAQ just wants to make the roads out there safe for everyone. If you have plans to go low with your ride, there are no problems. Make sure there’s no camber involved and you use low-profile tires to get up to the fender instead of stretching. You might also want to tell your cousin who’s moving to Québec with the “Devil Camber” 240SX to consider Ontario instead.

SAAQ’s definition of Hellaflush from their website (saaq.gouv.qc.ca)

GIVE YOURSELF SOME WOOD If you drive something a little more exclusive, you no doubt know how hard it is to find parts. They either don’t exist or cost you an arm and a leg, your savings, and your first-born. When Pravan Kuntmala was building his ’68 Datsun Fairlady Z, he soon found that sourcing parts for a car that doesn’t have parts made for it anymore was a huge downer. So, being from the woodworking part of the world known as Guatemala, Kuntmala got down to making his own bits for the inside of his roadster. After a lot of recognition and demand for his handiwork, Kuntmala decided he would start selling his creations to other fellow classic car owners, under the company name Nostalgic Grains. The only problem was newer car owners wanted in on some wood, too. Today, Nostalgic Grains produces quality wooden steering wheels and shift knobs out of wood and semi-precious stone for anyone from any scene. If your ride needs that authentic retro feel or a touch of class, head over to nostalgic-grains.com and give yourself some wood!

KDM: HERE TO STAY

Story by Merf Feliciano (KDMStance.com) | Photography by Phillip Awad, Kevin Choi & Eric Eikenberry

MAJOR SHOWS ON THE NATIONWIDE CIRCUIT NOW RECOGNIZE THE KDM MOVEMENT AND HAVE ADJUSTED THEIR TROPHY OFFERINGS TO REFLECT IT.

Ten years ago, the chances of you seeing a Hyundai or Kia at an import show were slim to none. Fast forward to 2014 and you’re practically guaranteed to see multiples from both badges. Gone are the days when Hyundai made ugly, unreliable and under-powered cars. In 2009, the emergence of the Genesis Coupe signified that Hyundai meant business and people, along with the aftermarket, took note. A beautiful design and a turbocharged engine? What? Around the same time, under the guidance of designer Peter Schreyer, Kia’s cars began to appeal to a younger crowd as old nameplates like the Amanti, Magentis and Spectra were dropped, and new ones like the Forte, Optima and Soul came online. The KDM (Korean Domestic Market) scene had arrived, but when I started KDMStance.com in 2012, entering a show still meant being tossed into the “Other” category. But with so many KDM

LIFESTYLE

38

enthusiasts already out there, we have truly raised the notoriety of the KDM scene so much that entering a show now means you will actually be entered under a “Best KDM” category. Major shows on the nationwide circuit now recognize the KDM movement and have adjusted their trophy offerings to reflect it. The aftermarket has also taken notice and they have begun supporting KDM. Let’s take my situation, for example: when I first bought my Sonata, I did so to keep her as a family car knowing darn well I would be controlled by the fact that I could not modify it. Who would make parts for a Sonata? Two years later, she’s bagged by Airrex, has a D2racing eight-piston big brake kit and many other mods. The same is now true for every other car in the KDM world – Optima, Forte, Elantra, Veloster, etc. – they are being slammed and modified all over the world. Whether it’s a Genesis Coupe on the quarter-mile, a VIP V8-powered Genesis Sedan or a bagged Sonata, the fact is there’s a new player in the import scene – KDM is here and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere! In fact, it’s growing daily.

I LOVE DRIVING SLOW In 2009, Roscoe Lewis initiated a positive-movement in Tampa Bay, FL called I Love Driving Slow, or ILDS for short. ILDS focuses on the times a car enthusiast drives “slow.” It’s based more on taking away the attention, and possibly the negative connotation, of people who drive fast, or drive fast cars. Driving slow later evolved to the idea of driving the speed limit to promote safe driving and the prevention of getting pulled over (driving infractions/tickets, loss of driving permit/license, vehicle impounding, etc). It was also used to prevent damage to lowered vehicles at speed bumps, uneven pavement and pot-holes. ILDS also holds true to their main goal: safety. Today, ILDS is a safe-driving community of thousands of car enthusiasts. Driving slow has become a lifestyle choice that influences driving (of course!), how to carry yourself and most importantly, how to modify your vehicle. ILDS organizes multiple annual events to give back and support the Florida car scene and its growth. The events include vendors to display and promote their latest products, along with a car-show atmosphere with no entry fee – aside from any parking fees. For more I Love Driving Slow news, updates and events, go to www. ilovedrivingslow.com.

WATERFEST

20

The 20th anniversary lights up Jersey By Micky Slinger | Photography by Terence Gamble

Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ – Being the largest V.A.G. car show and motorsport event in North America and the second largest of its kind in the world isn’t achieved overnight. From its humble beginnings as a watercooled (hence Waterfest – get it?) Volkswagen meet, Waterfest has since become North America’s own Southern Wörthersee. After seeing over 20,000 attendees this year, its 20th anniversary, we can say that it was another monumental success. How could it not be when Waterfest has not only a huge draw of show cars, but also an impressive schedule squeezed into two days? On Saturday, there was autocross, dyno sessions, drag racing, show judging and even the official Waterfest after party, Afterfest. Sunday combined the excitement of Saturday, but added show cars, burn-out competitions and awards.

Wild fitment, out of this world numbers, wheels off of Bentleys and Bugattis? Check. With Unitronic presenting the event, its presence was massive, showing off multiple platforms, including its new Jetta platform, which highlights exactly what can be done with the new powerplant to make the Mk6 go from a grocery getter to a track-capable machine. The rest of the vendor list was extensive with everything from tuning, swap meets, wraps and fashion represented. Other tuning mainstays like APR and HPA were also largely represented, showing off the newest products on VWs and Audis, new and old. Rest assured, it wasn’t all vendors and swap meets. Besides the crazy autocross and killer burn-out competitions, there were some exciting events anyone could take part in. Of course, being a huge VW show, Volkswagen showed up with an exciting “Ride and Drive”

program. Show goers could potentially walk up, sign a few dotted lines and get behind the wheel of some of the newest VWs available. Having the chance to wring out the Mk7 GTI, Beetle GSR and new CC-R line was the cherry on top of a wicked weekend for many. Equally as exciting was the debut of some ultra-rare Corrados. PASMAG got the chance to speak to John Kuitwaard and his pair of one-off Corrado Magnums. What is a Corrado Magnum?

Think Corrado, but with the caboose of a Volvo wagon. Pretty sweet, huh? VW had them commissioned, but decided against the plan for the shooting brake Corrado, which left the two as the only ones of their kind. The limited edition twins had to stay overseas until they had classic car status in North America, so Waterfest was their world debut! Were you able to get out and get in on the water-cooled goodness? If not, you better start planning your trip out to New Jersey for next year’s festivities. If you thought that this year’s show sounded impressive, just wait and see what Waterfest has up its sleeve when it hits its drinking age.

IMPORTFEST Canada’s biggest and baddest is back BY MICKY SLINGER | PHOTOGRPHY BY JOKER STYLE STUDIOS & LEGIT SUPPLY CO.

"Combine one part glitz and glamor with sleek design engineering, add in some lovely ladies and you have the recipe for the hottest show in town." Importfest’s description of themselves is pretty much perfect in all respects. You want the hottest rides from the Great White North, the best local vendors flogging their newest gear, a great atmosphere, and some eye candy aside from the rides? Well, you should have been at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario on July 26, because Importfest has it all.

The most important part of Importfest is, of course, the cars. Competitors spend obscene amounts of time building, modifying, tuning, and shining their machines up to be in show condition for Canada’s largest representation of the modified automotive lifestyle. To say that the canucks showed up would be an understatement. The best of the tuning shops and garages from the Greater Toronto Area and beyond killed it this year. Toronto’s local favorite, Nextmod, dominated the show

BRITTANY MURATA (LEFT) & MEGAN POWELL (RIGHT)

floor. We’re pretty sure that the Nextmod crew took at least half of the awards for the day and it was deserved. Nextmod’s rides were on point and earned them the “Baddest Team” trophy. Not to be left out, Team Granturismo came away with the award for “Baddest Team Results.” A one-of-a-kind car and owner took home the “Biggest and Baddest” trophy, poster, and $1,000 in cash: Paul Tolson and his Lexus GS 400 dominated in multiple categories, which

earned them the highest praise at the end of the day. Do you want a room of enthusiasts to pay attention? Just say the words Rocket Bunny. Kei Miura’s latest creations were showing and shining in all their glory. The new R35 GT-R and FD RX-7 Rocket Bunny kits were on full display at Importfest and they definitely did their jobs – making everyone drool. We can’t recap Imporfest and not comment on the always engaging import model competitions. After the smoke, bikinis, and camera flashes cleared, Megan Powell emerged the winner of Importfest 2014. Congrats, Megan! The next time you plan to head up North, make sure it's around July. Not only will you miss the snow, but you’ll also bear witness to the “biggest and baddest” show Canada has to offer. If 2014 has anything to say about what’s going on up there, it’s that the Canadians know what’s up.

TBA La Drifter Mas Fina Tee

TBA Tuna On White, No Crust Tee

TBA Wheel Love Tee

$30 (CAD) | tbabrand.com

$30 (CAD) | tbabrand.com

$40 (CAD) | tbabrand.com

Give respect to the drift scene. A young Japanese kid, clueless about cars, stepped into the scene and sparked a whole new type of adrenaline rush. Although just a cartoon, no one can deny the effect that Takumi Fujiwara and his panda AE86 had on North American drifting culture and our tuner scene. Celebrate with this throwback Corolla AE86 tee.

TBA’s tribute to a true hero. One of the first lines in Fast and the Furious, it introduced us to a character who we would grow with and love. Spilner, Brian O’Conner’s undercover name, represents each of us living that double life to be part of this culture we love so much.

This tee is for those who keep it real...for those who never sold their standards and only represented what they totally believed in to be true quality and authenticity.

$59.99 | goapr.com

$599 | goapr.com

The APR Boost Tap for the 1.8T and 2.0T EA888 Gen 3 engines is a simple, yet elegant solution for referencing boost pressure and vacuum as is often necessary for boost gauges. The boost tap plugs directly into the factory intake manifold via the boost pressure sensor bung and can be removed at any time without permanent modification.

The APR Stage I ECU Upgrade is designed to work without other changes to the vehicle's hardware. APR's calibration experts measured higher peak figures of 381 lb-ft of torque and 316 horsepower with 93 AKI octane fuel. Even higher figures were achieved using 100 AKI octane race fuel. The increase in power directly translates to an exceptionally quicker vehicle.

Holley's Modular Hi-Ram intake manifold is available for all popular LS platforms (LS1/LS2/ LS3/LS6/LS7), and comes in either cathedral or oval port configurations. Perfect for drifting, drag racing, or applications where use above 7,000 rpm will be seen. A great alternative to more expensive fabricated sheet-metal alternatives, these intakes are great for applications where indication system height is not limited.

SOUND ADVICE

BY GARRY SPRINGGAY

AGE OF THE APP A couple of months ago, I helped my neighbors’ son install a new sound system in his WRX. While we were buttoning that up, it occurred to me that the technology and features becoming de rigueur now would have been considered science fiction just a few years ago. So, I thought it may be a good time to bring you, dear reader, up to speed on all the unbelievable technology that a modern car audio system can provide. With the incredible proliferation of smartphones, everyone but the most dogged Luddites has multiple “apps” at the ready. Well, apps are not just for phones anymore, as today’s car audio systems are also very app friendly. Thanks to technologies like MirrorLink, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, you can migrate your apps to your car stereo quite easily. For example, in my vehicle, the apps I use most often are:

COPILOT GPS – Allows you to use your smartphone as a GPS. With Mirrorlink, the map can be put right onto a non-GPS seveninch LCD head unit. PANDORA – I’m an early adopter of the Pandora Internet radio service, which allows users to program stations and listen to specific music genres or comedies - anytime. The service is great for introducing users to new artists and if you don’t like something, you can get rid of it permanently. SPOTIFY – Another digital music service with millions of songs available and the ability to search for specific songs.

GAS GURU – Shows the price of fuel at every gas station within a 10-mile radius. Handy when you’re running low or trying to save a few bucks. ULYSSE SPEEDOMETER – An accurate trip computer that can show you your current and average speed, mileage traveled, directional compass, etc. It has a very customiz-

56

able screen and comes in handy when your OEM speedometer is somewhat less than accurate due to gearing or tire size changes.

WAZE – A powerful navigation and live traffic information app that works by sharing data from all its users. You can even share info on road hazards, speed traps and more, as it's happening. GLYMPSE – This is a must-have app for anyone who wants to share their location, or for parents who want to keep track of their kids. You set duration for tracking, pick a destination and send the info to your trusted watchers. Running late? Send a Glympse and let them know. Wondering where someone is? Request a Glympse and find out quickly! iHEARTRADIO – Allows you to listen to your favorite radio stations (via a mobile hotspot) from all over the country. Have a favorite station in NYC or LA but you live in Ottumwa? iHeartRadio is just what you need.

WHAT’S A MOBILE HOTSPOT?

really more about the passenger’s convenience and entertainment, rather than the driver. And it's great for work on the go. Many OEM automobile manufacturers are including mobile hotspot functionality right in the car, though the specifics differ from one case to another. BMW uses a system capable of creating a Wi-Fi network, but you need to add your own SIM card. This provides you with a little flexibility and you can even take the hotspot with you when you get out of the vehicle. Other OEMs, like Ford and GM, allow you to plug your own Internet-connected device into their system, which will then create a Wi-Fi network for you. This also offers a great deal of flexibility, though you have to obtain a compatible device and a service plan with data access before it will work. That guesswork is taken out of the equation by other OEMS like Mercedes, who have partnered with mobile Internet service providers to provide comprehensive hotspot solutions. While this short column only mentions a few of the thousands of apps you may find handy in your car, hopefully it gets you thinking about what you are missing! Oh yeah, for you real Luddites out there… did you know you can play music from a shiny round disc, read by a beam of light these days? You can even skip instantly to your favorite song, and you don’t have to eject it and flip it over halfway through!

A mobile hotspot is a mobile Wi-Fi network that typically isn’t meant for public use. Many cellular service providers offer devices that are referred to as “mobile hotspots” that allow several other devices to connect to the Internet. Some smartphones can perform this same function by creating an ad hoc Wi-Fi network, also referred to as tethering. Because a mobile hotspot can provide Internet access to nearly any Wi-Fi device, there are a number of useful applications. With a mobile hotspot in your car, you can listen to Internet radio and access streaming video content. You can also use the connected device to receive real time traffic and weather, and of course check your email via text-to-speech. Maybe to some, the idea of accessing the Internet from the road might seem frivolous at first, but it does have real utility for anyone doing long comFacebook: garry.springgay mutes or road trips. Like in-car DVD Website: www.cogentaudiolabs.com players, video games, and other entertainment systems, mobile hotspots are

BOWTIE REBOOT FRANK DANIELS’ 2010 CHEVY CAMARO BY JORDAN LENSSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL CRISP

T

he Chevy Camaro – a cultural icon that’s as American as southern hospitality and country music. It’s a car that has seen the winner’s circle in NASCAR and been the pride and joy of everyone from teenagers in the ‘60s to hair metal fans driving IROCs in the ‘80s and beyond. When GM decided to re-launch the Camaro in fifth-generation form in 2010, it was a throwback to the original that took the automotive and enthusiast world by storm in 1966. The Zeta platform is only the second in the model’s history, and was built to handle the advanced systems and immense power that lies beneath. But more importantly, the car honors its heritage – the large, inset black grill, long front hood and hulking rear quarter panels show that this newest car is an immense machine that takes the Camaro’s muscle to the next level.

60

PASMAG

OCTOBER 2014

Frank Daniels knows that history all too well. Hailing from Colonial Heights in the Old Dominion of Virginia, he’s been immersed in Chevy culture and American Muscle since he was a kid. At his first car show, he saw a ‘68 Camaro SS - the epitome of a pony car. To Daniels, it’s all he needed to see to get him hooked. It also didn’t hurt to grow up in a Chevy household; his father was a devoted owner, and that trend continued with him. For many people, they start building cars in their late teens and early 20s, but Daniels got started even earlier. His build credentials and loyalty started with the Camaro; that encounter with the ‘68 led him to build the granddaddy of ‘80s muscle cars – a 1987 IROC, which uses the same F-body platform as its legendary predecessors. The long silhouette, black inset headlights and trademark white/orange/red

taillights defined a generation of enthusiasts and led to some of the most powerful and creative builds of that decade. Daniels’ car was equipped with Chevy’s classic ‘big block’ 5.7-liter (350 cu. in.) V8. Only 12,105 were produced for the ’87 model year, and Daniels was surely one of very few teenagers who could call it his own. When he graduated from high school he was forced to sell the car, but vowed he would own another Camaro. Skipping the fourth generation brings us to the Camaro you see here. When Daniels first got the car, his intent was to build something that he could show, drive daily and race. The previous generations were built for straight line speed, but when Chevy decided to bring the Camaro back, the goal was to create an all-out track destroyer. His car arrived on the scene with a great deal of criticism following an online post from the 2012 Carlisle Performance & Style show, where it was accused of being a “riced up American car.” After that, Daniels set out to build something that people couldn’t say anything bad about. 62

PASMAG

OCTOBER 2014

He began his transformation and decided to enter into first Tuner Battlegrounds competition last year. “I really didn’t expect to go far in the [Tuner Battlegrounds] competition,” he says. Somehow, even without a functioning Facebook account for much of the competition, he climbed the charts and qualified for the Tuner Battlegrounds Showdown at SEMA 2013. The build came under even more criticism when it hit the showroom floor – many pointing out the poor alignment of the body panels, the quality of the paint, and the fit and finish of the build in general. What most people don’t know is that Daniels’ Camaro made it to the Tuner Battlegrounds Showdown at SEMA as an unfinished product. Daniels would have preferred a different scenario, but it was there because people wanted it there. They saw the potential it had, and that's evident here. When the curtains closed on SEMA and the Tuner Battlegrounds, Daniels finished fourth – impressive considering his lack of online campaigning. Even with the overwhelming support of his fans, the criticism Daniels received lingered in the back of his head, and pushed

him to get to the garage as soon as he returned home, with the intention of going bigger than he ever planned. “My build [took] a great sum of time,” he says. “At SEMA, my car was still under primer and I had people asking me why in the world I chose that paint for my car. I had others ask me why I would go this drastic with a domestic car. I told them, I am trying to make a domestic car that will fit it not in the domestic world, but would also be accepted by the import community.” Daniels tore the car completely apart. He finished coating the custom-made widebody in the House of Kolors three-tone paint scheme with PPG flakes and refitted the body panels to get them flush. Michael Kidd and Billy Daniel from Late Night Customs are credited with giving special attention to the numerous minor details throughout. Alone, these changes were enough to visually transform the car and silence his critics, but Daniels wanted to push it further. He took the naturally-aspirated GM 6.2-liter LS3 V8 – which was already pushing a consistent, naturally-aspirated 389 rearwheel horsepower – and loaded it with a TorqStorm supercharger, Texas Speed AFM-1 camshafts, a Kenne Bell boost pump and DeatschWerks 60-lb. fuel injectors, among other upgrades. The final result? A tire-melting 609 horsepower...and that’s before he dumps 20 lbs. of nitrous from two 10 lb. tanks! For braking power, Daniels upgraded his four-piston Brembo calipers to include R1 Concept pads and a set of R1 custom rotors. His suspension is completely air ride, with an upgraded Smart Ride controller that displays pressure and travel distance, powered by a five-gallon tank with dual compressors. Inside, his game is just as serious. Custom upholstered in white

and black throughout, his gauges, moldings, bezels and shifter plate are painted white with blue flakes. The air ride tank sits where the back seat used to be, and as a throwback to the tuners of old, he’s even got an Xbox 360 with custom blue carbon fiber-dipped controllers and three TVs, which highlight an insane list of mobile electronics housed in custom racks and boxes in the cabin and trunk. This is one of the most extreme Camaro builds we’ve seen in a while, and while it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, Daniels’ has pushed the envelope to create a car that is equal parts tuner and American muscle and worthy of a role in the next Transformers blockbuster. “At the end of the day you have to realize that you build what you like,” Daniels says. “The smile on my face when I see my car made me realize that I built the right car for me.” And for any builder, that’s really what it’s all about.

CABE'S CORNER

BY CABE SIPES

sound quality was as good as you could get back then, but being tape, it was obviously analog. Then I purchased my first CD player – a Panasonic from Sears – and it was like I had entered into the future. My biggest problem was that I couldn’t find any CDs to buy because every store still carried cassettes. Yes, back then we had actual music stores that sold nothing but tapes and CDs! Regardless, my first experience with a CD was listening to Kwame and a New Beginning and, when my two 12-inch Black Phantom subs started playing that bass line, I was hooked. Tapes officially sucked and I was a newfound digital consumer.

THE "REAL" SOURCE When building an audio system, you will invest not only money, but time - time choosing the best products for you and your budget, as well as the type of equipment that will produce your desired end result, whether that is sound quality or maximum bass. Normally, this process starts with the selection of a head unit. When choosing the head unit, it's all about features and choosing the one that best suits your needs. This normally includes screen size, Bluetooth, navigation, sub control, satellite radio and other popular features.

Now, what if your source is not the best it can be? Then your system will never achieve its maximum potential, and you've wasted hundreds - if not thousands - of dollars, and a lot of time. When I say “source,” I don't mean the head unit; I'm referring to the “real” source: the audio format(s) you're feeding into the head unit. THE DIGITAL AGE When I started in car audio, my first radio was a Sherwood tape deck with music search. I could fast forward and the tape player would automatically stop at the next song! It was amazing technology and the

66

PASMAG

BLAME THE iPOD Now that everything is digital, everything is better, right? Well, no, actually. It’s worse. Gone are the days of the universal CD format. This is almost 100% due to the invention of the iPod, which popularized compressed music in MP3 format. Once the iPod was released, it seemed every car audio system in the country with a front 3.5 mm AUX input was being fed the iPod’s MP3 library. It wasn’t long after that people decided they were sick of lugging around massive CD cases. They wanted all their music on one device. The MP3 was born to the mass public and with it, all of its digital counterparts began popping up. This is when we traded quality for quantity and never looked back.

WHAT ARE MY CHOICES? When it comes to your music, unless you’re listening to the actual CD, you are more than likely listening to some form of “ripped” or compressed digital version. When you do this, the music must have a codec or a format that it has been encoded with so that a source unit can decode the information and play it back. The types of formats out there are plenty, but the most popular are FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AIFF and MP3. MP3 is the most commonly used format due to its ability to use compression to make the file size smaller. This is where the iPod thrived and why the personal MP3

CABE'S CORNER player became an overnight phenomenon. You could have literally 1,000s of songs in the palm of your hand. FLAC, WAV, ALAC and AIFF formats are uncompressed formats, meaning the file sizes are much larger. These are the files used in music studios and professional recording bays all over the world, because it contains the original audio information in its entirety. • Although WAV and

FLAC audio are almost identical, FLAC audio allows you to ID TAG your music.

• The original iPod

WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO? This is where the debate comes in. If you are a serious audiophile or a competitor and you are listening to MP3s in any fashion other than messing around, you are doing your equipment a huge disservice. The fact that MP3s are compressed means that some of the information of that song has been removed to make the file size as small as possible. The largest part of a song as far as data goes is the bottom end, below 200 Hz. This means that when you’re listening to an MP3 track, the actual output from the lower frequency will be significantly reduced due to the information being removed and/or compressed. This will lead you to boost your sub output or use your EQ to try and boost those frequencies. Instead of sounding better though, you end up clipping the signal and creating stress on your equipment

because you can’t boost what isn’t there. This usually leads to a trip to the forums to complain about how bad that brand of speakers are, or how much your installer sucks, when really, your music library is to blame. So, what were MP3s made for if they sound so bad? Easy: headphones! When the iPod was released, Apple had no intention of flooding the high-end home or car audio market. It was simply making a ‘personal music player,’ which means you and a pair of headphones. To use an MP3 recording for anything other than headphones or small personal speakers is to guarantee you, the listener, an unfulfilled experience. When choosing a personal player that will be feeding a head unit, I would always recommend using FLAC audio files. Although WAV and FLAC audio are almost identical, FLAC audio allows you to ID TAG your music. Almost all head units now come with some sort of USB input for an external USB drive to play music from, so as long as your head unit can read FLAC format then you should be set, and you can see file/song titles and artist names. HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO? A FLAC album is much, much larger than MP3! You’re going to have to give up some hard drive space

2014-07-22 4:01PM PM 8/11/2014 4:33:09

Untitl

for sound quality. If this is a problem, you may need to look into a head unit that can read large external hard drives. It isn't as hard as it sounds, since almost all modern head units will read a drive larger than 64 GB (even if they say they won’t). Here is the trick: you have to format the drive to FAT32 using a free program that is easily found on Google. Anything above 64 GB is supposed to be formatted EXFAT 32, which head units won’t read, but if you use the program to force a drive to format to FAT32 (Google search hint), you can use any sized drive you want. I am currently running a 500 GB Seagate drive on my Pioneer 8500BHS. USING BLUETOOTH FOR STREAMING Instead of adding a hard drive or direct link to the head unit, say you've decided to use Bluetooth to transmit all your FLAC audio so that you can enjoy uncompressed music... Well, it doesn't work excatly like that, but you’re off to a better start than most people with their MP3 libraries. The reason this doesn't really work is because Bluetooth audio is compressed audio as well, so no matter what you play, it's compressed before being sent to the head unit. The best way to make this work is to have Bluetooth 4.0 and make sure your player and head unit are A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) compatible. This

4:01 PM

Untitled-5 1 ME - Cabes Corner 16.06-OctNov.indd 3

means the Bluetooth inside is able to send and receive stereo-quality music in compressed form. So why use FLAC audio if it’s going to be compressed anyway? Well, wouldn’t you want to use a lossless version and have it compressed as opposed to compressing something that’s already been compressed? It's like stepping on the signal twice with MP3s. With the FLAC version at least you know you’re getting the best you can from your Bluetooth stream. There is no way to fit all of the pros and cons of different audio codecs into this article, but I hope I’ve expelled enough information to pique your interest to further investigate your own music library. Not everyone is an audiophile, and to some, the difference between an MP3 and FLAC is unnoticeable. On the other hand, you’ll know you’re an audiophile when you can feel the emptiness of a compressed song after hearing Twitter: @cabesipes the glorious lows and crystalFacebook: /CabeSipesFanPage clear highs from the full-sized Website: www.customaudioreimagined.com version.

RACE TO THE BASS BY GEORGE DIMITRIADIS

I

find myself wondering, ‘Is all of this worth it?’ This after having dismantled a setup that everyone thought was perfect and countless people asking me, “What are you thinking?” Why couldn’t I just be happy and content with what I had? Why did I need to do this? There have been numerous times when I second guessed what I’m doing here. The finish line is in sight, but it’s been a long road and a struggle. I’m not going to sugar coat it, it’s been a challenge on numerous fronts, but I have faith that, in the end, it will be worth it. It has to be, doesn’t it? Okay, enough of that, it’s time to get down to business. There’s an old car audio saying, “It takes power to make power.” In this case it’s going to take a lot of power. With this build I decided to run a single charging setup at 12 volts, as opposed to multiple charging setups, which I did previously. As mentioned in Phase 1, the charging system up front is comprised of four Ohio Generator 300-amp alternators, each with a total of two positive and negative runs from front to back with plans to charge the impending battery bank in the rear. One would ask, ‘Why do you need four alternators and over 1,200 A of charging power?’ The answer is simple, “I have 21 batteries to charge.” I sat down with Nick Cimino at Core Industries and discussed our options for batteries, and what would pair well with the amplifiers we had planned to use (you’ll have to wait for Phase 5 to see the goodies). We decided on using a battery with high amp hour (AH) ratings and a low resistance rating. We opted to go with VMAX

70

PASMAG

batteries. The model of choice is the VMAX Charge Tank CT 2500 with a 125 AH rating and a low resistance rating making it 99% efficient and a fast recharge rate. When it’s all said and done, there will be a battery bank in excess of 2,600 AH at my disposal with over 1,200 A of alternator charging power feeding it. This combination will make for countless hours worth of demo time. With each battery weighing in excess of 75 pounds we are looking at almost 1,600 pounds of additional weight in batteries alone. Since space is already at a premium, I decided to have the battery rack vertical (and in essence be a wall in itself). With the battery rack housing a total of 21 batteries, it needs to be extremely strong, sturdy and above all, safe. We visited a nearby steel mill and picked up some one-inch square tubing and 0.125-inch flat steel bar in order to build the battery rack. The rack houses three rows of batteries, seven batteries wide. The rack is bolted to the floor and rear wall capitalizing on the minimal space in the rear, while also acting as additional bracing and support. In the front cabin and the headliner situation, the sunroof is no more. With the headliner out I realized the sunroof cutout and sliding panel was of no use, so 0.5-inch MDF was cut to size and filled the once existing sunroof opening. Now it’s integrated, glassed and the entire headliner is reinforced. From there it’s been wrapped in black vinyl and test fitted. It’s rather eerie sitting in the front cabin with an all black roof, no sunroof, no rear windows and a very large wall behind you. With the headliner finished, it’s time to move to the enclosure and trim panels.

Phase 3 saw the enclosure glassed, sanded, prepped and ready for it to be finished. By finished, I’m referring to smoothing out the interior of the enclosure with fiberglass reinforced filler. Half-a-dozen cans later and it was ready for a final sanding. Once done, it was sprayed with a custom textured black coating. This adds to the sealing of the enclosure and also provides a menacing finish. All that was left for the enclosure was the trim panels on the front, sealing the B-pillar completely. The trim panels were initially measured and traced out with a cardboard stencil. The use of cardboard allows for precise measurement of angles and curves. With the stencil complete and dead on, it was transferred to ž-inch MDF for added strength and vibration resistance. The trim panel is made in two matching and identical parts joined at the

The trim panels are fitted, and permanently adhered to the wall with heavy duty PL Premium adhesive. I’m going to refer back to Phase 2 when we covered the build of the door panels. Many people would think 11

component sets between the front and rear doors would be sufficient. For most people that would be – and then some. With demos being at the forefront of this build, I opted to take advantage of some space that would otherwise have been left vacant. I played with the idea of integrating speakers in the rear door section above the window line where the sidewall of the enclosure is. The end result is a custom rear side window facing speaker pod. Each pod is made of MDF with molded trim panels and houses five mid-range speakers and five tweeters. Once again, the panels are wrapped in color-matched black vinyl. Adding to that is the creation of an RE AUDIO logo, embedded in the wall under the speaker pods and wrapped in the black vinyl once more. Speaker grills that match the front and rear door panel grills finish off the entire package. Stay tuned for Phase 5 and the conclusion of BIG BRUTE. The best it yet to come!

E with some of the most exclusive content on the continent. So, when we at PASMAG were deciding on a photographer that would do it justice, the list was very slim. As you can see in the byline, the artist creating the menacing images in these pages is Marcel Lech, and we think he did this GT-R the justice it deserves. That couldn’t have been more evident when the Internet nearly imploded when he posted the shoot to his Facebook wall before it ran on our cover. Instantly, the car received thousands of likes and hundreds of shares, including some of the industry’s biggest magazines. Even our competition had to get in on the action. It’s a telling sign not only of

the photos snapped, but of just how monstrous and far-reaching this car really is. But for the record, we’re taking full credit for the hype. And Lech’s photos look incredible (photogs, take note). The LB kit is straight-up ridiculous, but the work underneath deserves equal credit and gives this build its legitimacy. You see, Vancouver is hard on cars; it rains, it’s coastal, and that means salt in the air and impending rust on any rough bodywork. “The company here, named SerialNine, they were instrumental in making this probably the best Liberty Walk build around,” says Dubec. “The reason I say this is you can do a really poor job of putting a Liberty Walk kit

It’s the marriage of the two perfect specimens. As a Canadian car, it’s one of only two LBs, and undoubtedly the finest. When we first found it, Dr. J.J. Dubec’s monster was but a shadow of what you see today. It’s hard to scoff a GT-R – it was nice – but in its previous skin wasn’t a showstopper. Now it’s one of the cleanest builds

In the rear and you’ll see one of the nicest motorized amp rack installs around, pushing up two Mosconi Zero 3 amps and two Zero 4s, no less. Somehow the movement is controlled by a single actuator, crafted and built by Joey Knapp (if you’re curious, you can visit Simplicity in Sound’s YouTube video at: youtube.com/ watch?v=Ym2T79Qgv0k). Each of those four amps are responsible for covering the four frequency ranges in the car – sub, midbass, midrange and high – and each of those is treated with the finest selection of Gladen products: two Zero Pro 10-inch subs and AeroSpace series midbass, midranges and tweeters. The sound has been carefully tuned to the resonant frequency of the vehicle, processed by a Mosconi 6to8 processor with AMAS Bluetooth module and operated through the world’s first GT-R head unit swap – a Pioneer DEX-P99 RS. The entire project is no-screws. “When people hear no-screws install they think you don’t drill into your car,” he says. “In fact, you do drill into your car. But you use fittings, like hurricane bolts or threaded inserts. That means things are more secure but also replaceable. For accessibility, removability, sturdiness and longevity of the install. It’s really cool.”

We have rain all the time, so we wanted to make sure that all of the cuts and inner welds were finished.” After the kit work was complete, the body received a full dressing of matte dark grey 3M 1080 vinyl wrap and graphics by Wrap-Workz, and for anyone who thinks matte is dead, just look at these curves. Best of all, he’s got a few colormatched goodies that’ll make even educated onlookers double and triple take. The front and rear Brembo brake calipers are paint matched. So are his swan neck rear wing mounts. Even the natural burnt patina of his Armytrix titanium exhaust tips match perfectly. The subtle carbon touches, chrome handles and piano black finishes on the front and rear fascias are icing on the proverbial cake, but that’s just the start. The cabin and trunk are

It’s this type of craftsmanship that sets this GT-R apart from the rest. “It’s the last thing you expect, because you blow people away with the Liberty Walk, or you pop the hood open and people see a polished intake,” Dubec says. “But have a seat in the car, and it’s literally one of the cleanest, most well-phased, wellbalanced, totally linear cars.” And he’s got the trophy case to back it up. His prior experience has seen him capture numerous IASCA/AMA soundoffs titles in his Focal Utopia Berylliumequipped Honda Ridgeline, and as a special thanks for his continued support and promotion of the Focal brand, after Dubec bought a set of the prestigious Focal Ultima components for a future, unnamed build, Focal France sent him serial number 0001 of the kit to be set up by Nick Wingate himself. So yes, the man

is serious about his sound. “I’m a big audio guy. This whole car was basically my audio dream,” Dubec says. The doctor from B.C. hadn’t planned for his Godzilla to get this out of control. The truth is, it kind of took on a mind of its own. “My original plan was to have a car that excelled both in performance and audio that I could enjoy privately,” Dubec says. “That idea got scrapped after I met JOey and Bing from Simplicity in Sound, and got annihilated once I saw a Liberty Walk GT-R conversion.” “We took the whole scheme and tried to put it together. We took the brushed finish on the amps and emulated that on the roof of the car. When we thought of the blue lighting with a bit of the red, to pay homage to the red in the GT-R, we didn’t change the emblem because that’s a special Japanese resin that’s supposed

to age with time. I pay major respect to Mizuno-san (Kazutoshi Mizuno) because when I was in high-school, his R32 was what I was dreaming of, and then his R33 and R34. There are certain things in Japanese culture where there’s honor and there are certain things that you can go balls out and cut your fenders, and that’s Kato-san’s (Wataru Kato of Liberty Walk) approach...it’s a cool thing.” The build’s organic nature and homage to the Japanese tuning and accessory scene plays all over here. His block is fitted with a Race Core FMI and Type1 Racing polished intercooler pipe kit, GotBoost three-inch intakes and HKS SSQV-4 blow-off valves, while he kept the stock Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) turbochargers. His four-wheel Mustang Dyno results (a tough test for anyone hoping for high readouts) sees numbers

audio gear. Plus, he was able to get kit number one (again?!) of the second coming of a special, ongoing suspension partnership between AirREX and Liberty Walk. The result is one of perfect stance, offering three drive-height modes and complete remote-adjustability to tackle any road, parking garage, or showroom floor (stay tuned for more). We wouldn’t kick this out of our garage for using bags. As well as being a sight for sore eyes, Dubec uses his car – and his career – for good measure. His GT-R has been sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the U.S. and Canada, and most recently took Best Team Design at the Diamond Rally, where he raised proceeds for that same charity. Up next? Well, Wrap-Workz has essentially committed to change the artwork on the car wherever it goes, and with SEMA rumors flying full force, we and many others might be lucky enough to get up close and personal with it. But beware, because this doctor’s creation seems to be transforming and getting meaner by the day. It’s already taken over the Internet and your social media, and you could be next. Just consider yourself warned.

anywhere from 700 to 747 crank horsepower, depending on the fuel/ethanol blend, which is live and automatically adjusted with an EcuTek ECU with FlexFuel setup and custom mapping. When Dubec pushes “cancel” on his steering wheel, the exact ethanol blend shows up on his center console display. His power numbers aren't ridiculously high, but they’re unbelievably precise, thanks in large part to an incredibly lofty, and somewhat crazy idea to fly in one of the industry’s best to test and tune. “Eight of us GT-R guys all chipped in money, flew John Visconti and his wife down to Vancouver, put him up in the Shangri-La for a week, and he dyno’d every day!” Brilliant. Don’t say you wouldn’t do it either. All the work under the hood makes for a pretty serious track monster, so it might surprise some people that Dubec decided on AirREX air ride suspension, but there are two very good reasons for it. First, this is a car that sees varying city roads and driveways. Second, there aren’t too many purpose-built race cars around that are hauling around tens-of-thousands of dollars in

KEN GUSHI TURBOS HIS FR-S BY MICKY SLINGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREDDY

From a young age, Kenshiro Gushi put the drift scene in shock and awe with his natural ability. Whether it’s Formula DRIFT, D1 Grand Prix, Pikes Peak, or any invitational he decides to crush, Gushi continuously defies expectations. The same can be said of his daily driver, the Scion FR-S. Scion’s new enthusiast car has taken the automotive world by storm and won its way into many a gearhead’s heart. Of course, a demanding driver like Gushi is wellsuited to a car that wants nothing more than to be thrashed about, but Gushi is no average driver. He soon discovered he’d be a little happier if, when he pushed his FR-S on the track, it gave him a bit more push back. As a part of the GReddy Racing Team, it made sense to look within for a solution. GReddy delivered. Having released its T518Z Tuner Turbo Kit for the ZN6 and ZC6 chassis, GReddy believes it has just the thing for Gushi’s needs. So here’s how he outfitted his first FR-S, “Marilyn,” with a bit of GReddy induction goodness... The work was done, of course, by the man himself. 82

OCTOBER 2014

A bit of advice from Mr. Gushi before we dive in: “Take your time and don't rush the install. Make sure you follow directions and torque everything to spec. It's pretty hard to mismatch nuts and bolts, but it will make the install a lot easier if you label and organize everything.”

The FR-S install starts on the hydraulic lift. Safety first: disconnect the negative battery terminal. Begin by removing the necessary OEM parts. Just to be safe, refer to the factory service manual prior to uninstalling factory bits. The underside of the FR-S looks kind of like a Hot Wheels car with all of the black underbody covers, but you’ll need to spoil the illusion a little bit by removing the front cover. Drain the oil into a catch can and remove the oil pan and oil pressure switch. To get at the meat of the install, the FR-S’s face needs to be ripped off, so remove the front bumper. A tap with a flat-head screwdriver on the inside tabs of those pesky side marker lights should help with removal. Next to come out is the washer tank and bumper reinforcement, followed by the air cleaner case and inlet

Having released its T518Z Tuner Turbo Kit for the ZN6 and ZC6 chassis, GReddy believes it has just the thing for Gushi’s needs. assembly. Install the five (5) mm silicone cap to the L-joint pipe below the brake booster after removing the intake chamber. Once the radiator plate, support sub assembly, fan and shield and reservoir tank are out, the manifold should be fairly easy to remove. Getting that turbo goodness installed can now begin. Before getting started, put on safety glasses. Wash out the oil pan and scrape off the excess silicone sealant from the part and mounting edges. Following the turbo kit manual, tap a 13 mm hole for an oil return tube. Take the turbo manifold and install the all-important heat shield, followed by three

Untitle

supplied stud bolts around the opening. Install the manifold, oil pan, and gaskets, but not too tight - they’ll be coming off in a bit. Stick the oil return tube and gasket onto the turbo assembly and install it temporarily using the OEM bolts. Install the oil return hose bracket on the factory bolt, just under the crank pulley. What’s the reasoning behind the loosely installed parts? To mark the oil return tube for correct positioning. Make sure it will not touch the crank pulley and that it’s aligned properly with the oil return hose bracket. Now remove the turbo, manifold, oil pan and all associated gaskets and get hands-on with that oil pan again. Gushi Tip: “The kit requires you to drill a hole into your oil pan and weld on a return tube for the turbo oil return line. You have a few options. The better option would be to buy a new pan from Scion or Subaru and keep your stock one as a spare. This way, you can continue to drive your car while you get everything prepped and you will also end up with a spare.” Put on some welding gear and weld on the return tube using the markings and measurements you just made. Reinstall the newly modified oil pan with some new silicone to seal it up.

Untitled-2 1

Next is the radiator fan and a little electrical work. Looking at the top of the fan shield, cut out a portion on the left and drill two five (5) mm holes on the right (as shown in the manual). Wrap the fan harness in thermo wrap and it’s ready to be relocated. Reinstall the radiator fan, shield, and reservoir tank and reconnect the coupler. Also, wrap the end of the lower radiator hose nearest the oil pan. Get the manifold and test pipe bracket ready for install, but don’t dare reuse those nuts! For this part of the install, some replacements will need to be picked up from a dealer first. The turbo can finally go on. Using a ratchet and hex key, loosen the tensioner pulley by turning the belt clockwise while keeping tension off the pulley by using the hex key in the orifice to the left. Remove the idler pulley’s number one and two bolts and add the turbo mounting bracket using the spacers provided. Spacer “A” has a lip, so make sure it’s inserted into the idler pulley. Do not remove the belt when installing the bracket. Now the turbo assembly and turbine inlet gasket are ready to be installed. Messing with oil fittings comes next. Grab the straight union fitting and install it into the

three-way fitting. Make sure to use threaded seals and don’t over-tighten anything in this section. The factory oil switch that was uninstalled at the beginning can be placed onto the three-way fitting now as well. On the opposite side of the switch, install the 90-degree elbow fitting and reconnect the oil pressure switch harness. Once the banjo bolt and crush washer are installed on the turbo assembly, connect the oil pressure line from the elbow fitting to the banjo bolt. There should be plenty of zip ties in the box, so use those to tie the oil pressure line to the radiator fan cover. Make sure the line is nice and secure. As Smokey the Turbo Bear says, “Only you can prevent engine fires.” After wrapping the oil return hose with thermo cloth, route it between the turbo and oil pan and mount it to the hose bracket. GReddy recommends using stainless steel wire. Installing the down-pipe is a piece of cake with the supplied hardware and turbine outlet gasket. After the down-pipe is nice and tight, wrap the air/fuel sensor harness with thermo cloth and install that and the O2 sensor into the test pipe. Using the complimentary gaskets and hardware, bolt on the test pipe while making any adjustments needed to the exhaust system.

Now adjust and tighten on turbine bracket “B” and reconnect the O2 and air/fuel sensor harness couplers. Turbine bracket “A” comes right after, but install it loosely. The heat shield should slide right over the down pipe hardware with everything fitting nicely in the cutouts. Tighten it all up. Have your silicone ready, because the free rotation union installation onto the compression pipe is going to need some sealing. Next, loosely install compression pipes C-1 to C-3 for future adjustments. Make sure you cut a hole in the anti-diversion foam for C-2 to fit. It’s time to get the intercooler mounted up. Reinstall the radiator core support sub assembly and relocate the hood latch cable using some zip ties. Put the intercooler bracket on, but keep it loose for now. After removing the front bumper bracket and drilling two seven (7) mm holes, reinstall and fit the intercooler into place with the mounting spacers and tighten up the intercooler bracket. Hook up the piping, check the clearance, and tighten those hose clamps. Install the airflow meter on the appropriate pipe, wrap the airflow harness in thermo wrap and connect it to the coupler. compression tube and free rotation union to the turbo actuator. Frosty. As much as a turbo needs oil, it needs air as well. Start by installing the intake tube adapter flange onto the turbo compressor inlet with the supplied stud bolts and gasket. Assemble the Airinx air filter, attach it to the intake pipe and install. Extend the ventilation hose using the 12 mm hose union and supplied rubber hose, then connect it to the intake tube. Now comes the moment of truth. Replace the engine oil, reconnect the battery and

remove the ECU harness from the ECU. Give the engine a crank by turning the ignition. This will pressurize the turbo oil feed line. Double check the oil level and add as needed. Reconnect the ECU and start the engine while checking for leaks. All good? The front bumper reinforcement will need to be modified to fit the intercooler. Cut as needed and reinstall along with the washer tank, bumper cover and underbody cover. “The only difficult part – not even difficult to be honest - was prying off the oil pan,”

Gushi recalls. “The install is seriously a breeze. As long as you have basic tools, anyone can perform this job.” Gushi himself reports he’s running 250 wheel horsepower – at the stock five PSI which is about 90 more than stock, and he’s thrilled with the difference the kit makes on and off the track. Both Gushi and GReddy recommend running an oil cooler as well – which GReddy offers - as the four-banger boxers run a little hotter with the added boost. Gushi also says an upgraded fuel pump and injectors were a good idea, too, if you’re thinking of increasing boost pressure. “Not that you run out of fuel with the stock injectors, but as you increase boost, you will be sitting closer to the max capacity of both the pump and injectors,” Gushi says. So, was he GReddy Tuner Turbo Kit good enough for the best? “To be honest, I never complained about the factory power output, but after driving my car upon completion, I don't think I can ever go back to NA,” confesses Gushi. “It has a smooth power delivery that is both street-able and also enjoyable on the circuit.” “I fell in love with my car all over again.”

o read through all of the praise he’s garnered from his customers, posted in forums and websites all over the Internet, would take days. Days that we don’t have since we are busy digging up the best cars we can find for you on a daily basis. With all of the Kenny Tran love floating around, we’re surprised there’s not a Kardashian on his arm. Surely not all of it is due to his back-to-back Import Drag Racing national championships in 2007 and 2008 in the 2006 Jotech Racing SCIONtific tC. Nor is it due to the “quickest and fastest Honda Civic in Texas,” which ran a staggering 8.12 seconds at 184 mph back in 1999. Nor is it his 50 drag racing wins overall. No, Jotech’s success is clearly due to something else; a transcendent belief in helping his customers build the best cars they can afford. You see, they don’t discriminate. They’ll do oil changes on your Accord or Camry right next to an engine build for a 1,400 horsepower GT-R. And it would appear that they do it all in a shop cleaner than an In N Out Burger. That sort of attitude buys loyalty even in a rough economy. We had questions about how this happened, so, of course, we went back to the man himself, and this is what we learned...

All of the super-successful companies we’ve ever researched have always had one thing in common: an unswerving adherence to a core guiding principle. Well, drag racer Kenny Tran took his knowledge of world-class construction and tuning, and has parlayed it into what could arguably be called Texas’ most reputable automotive modification business: Jotech Motorsports in Garland, Texas.

What age did you realize you wanted to work with automobiles? Kenny Tran: 15, before I got my drivers license. I had some old beat up cars so I always had to find ways to modify and make them look and drive better. What was your first project vehicle? KT: It was a 1987 Toyota Cressida hand-me-down car from my dad. I worked at my brother-in-law’s body shop all summer to help him fix, prep and repaint it with a custom blue color. It was really nice when it was done. When did you start to think, “Hey, I might be pretty good at this stuff?” KT: After I had bought a few used cars, fixed them up and sold them for a profit. How has growing older changed what you do? KT: Well, I’ve gained a tremendous amount of experience.

LEGENDS: Do you have a current favorite car to modify? KT: Definitely the Nissan GT-R! I really like this car for its history and how robust the platform is. The car is amazing as is and even better when you modify it. If you were to build your own costis-no-object dream car, what would it be and what modifications would you choose? KT: I would choose the new Nismo GT-R and still modify it with our Stage 6 to make 1,000 hp for a daily/street/track car.

90

FOUR career so far. The one that stands out most would be the NHRA Sport Compact Drag Racing Series finale in 2007 when our team came from behind the points chase and won the championship. What does an eight-second quarter mile in a monster turbocharged FWD Honda or Scion feel like? KT: In the Honda, it felt pretty hairy and out of control because we started out with a street Honda Civic and modified it to run 8s. The Scion was purposely built and designed for the drag strip, so it was very stable and quick right out of the box.

If you’ve ever sold or parted out your car projects to build new ones, which one makes you say “I should have never sold that car!”? KT: That would be my widebody 1995 Toyota Supra hardtop with HKS Twin Turbo. It was special to me because I had a lot of fun with it on the street.

How has drag racing affected your life? What other motorsports do you enjoy? KT: Drag racing taught me a few things: how to work more efficiently, be more patient and methodical. I did enjoy motorcycles in my 20s, and road racing as of late.

Which sponsors or manufacturers have you had the best relationship with over the years? KT: I would have to say the folks at Quaker State and Black Magic. We've had a great relationship and partnership over the years. They really helped propel my racing career and gave us great support in the background.

Can you comment on the drag racing scene as it exists today? Do imports get respect? KT: There are a few drag racing venues that attract local racers and attendees that do well in the local markets. More and more of the “airport runway” events are picking up steam and attracting a wide variety of cars, especially high-horsepower exotics.

What would you regard as the high point of your career so far? Is there a track event or show or meeting you remember as remarkable? KT: There are many high points in my

Tell me when and how Jotech started? KT: My brother-in-law and I started Jotech back in 1995. He had quite a bit of knowledge about this business back then and I learned from him. The rest is history.

How has Jotech Motorsports managed to weather the recession? KT: It was a rocky time for us because I was thinking at the time – who would spend money on modifying their cars when the economy was in such bad shape? Fortunately, we have a great customer base that continued to support us and we value their business, and did whatever it took to earn their business.

Who has been your biggest influence? KT: My dad for sure, because he gave me something that’s invaluable; he taught me that hard work and persistence will pay off. He was a very smart man and hard-working man. I respect him tremendously.

Who are some of the people you look up to? KT: My mom and dad, Donald Trump and Michael Jordan.

What's your biggest accomplishment? KT: Winning the NHRA Sport Compact Championship and having a successful business.

Who are your fiercest competitors? KT: Lisa Kubo, Gary Gardella, Stephanie Eggum and Marty Ladwig.

Any future goals you would like to share? KT: Not yet, it’s still in the “dream” phase. What advice do you have for a youngster just starting out who harbors a healthy interest in building his or her own performance machine? What platform would be a good starter? KT: First, you have to have a dream, then write it down on paper and act on it every day until you achieve it. As of now, I think the Scion FR-S or Mitsu Evo are the best platforms for beginners to start out with for modifying.

With guidance from his father, assistance from his brother-in-law, and the support of his many fans and customers, Kenny Tran has bucked the failing-business trend in this tough economy. Along the way he’s created some truly drool-worthy machines and, if our pay were higher, he’d be the first choice of tuner for our personal GT-Rs. If you’re in the Texas area, hit him up. Your machine could be built by a genuine legend.

Not the Great Wall, the Imperial Palace or the Olympic Village and its centerpiece, the Bird’s Nest Stadium, but rather spots for car enthusiasts. BMWs are easily the most common cars driving in and around Beijing, and the One Hundred Tuning Club is the place to be if you’re a certifiable Bimmerhead. Though this wasn’t immediately apparent when we spotted the Swarovski crystal-encrusted 300C outside of it newest flagship location at the Tuner Tribe (see the Aug./Sept. 16.04 Issue of PASMAG), it was enough to whet our appetites and arrange a visit at one of the

FORMULA D PRO 2 RUNDOWN

In years past, newly-licensed Formula Drift ProAm graduates have faced a steep learning curve, getting thrown into the mix with some of the best and most experienced drivers in the world instantly. Formula Drift recognized this lack of a stepping stone between regional ProAm events and the championship level of STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON the series, announcing the Pro 2 series at the Formula D level. The four-event series is designed to help drivers get accustomed to traveling nationally and driving on the same tracks as the Formula D Pro circuit, but without battling past champions in tandem and provide added face time with the Formula D judges. Here’s how it works: all newly-licensed ProAm drivers will graduate to the Pro 2 class, with the top eight drivers being allowed to ‘graduate’ to the Pro 1 class in future seasons. Drivers finishing in the top 16 of Pro 1 last season cannot compete in Pro 2, which should help restrict the class to those with similar levels of experience and tandem skills. Since this is the first year of Pro 2, all drivers outside of the top 16 were allowed to choose whether they drove in Pro 1, Pro 2 or both series. This year, the four tracks on the Pro 2 schedule are Miami Homestead Speedway, Evergreen Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Irwindale Speedway. This schedule provides around 6,800 miles of travel over four and a half months, compared to around 12,500 miles of travel over seven months that the Pro 1 schedule requires.

Here’s a look at the top contenders, as showcased by the results after two of four events:

DAN SAVAGE

Sikky Mazda RX-8

“Rapper” Dan as he is known, has quickly come up to speed in this new RX-8 chassis, powered by a supercharged Chevy LS motor. Winning the Evergreen round and placing in the top eight in Florida has tied Rapper Dan for the lead halfway through the Pro 2 schedule.

GEOFF STONEBACK

Nissan 240SX

Stoneback was picked by many to be the frontrunner in Pro 2 based on his previous domination of the ProAm level over the past few years. Stoneback’s S14 chassis is new for 2014, but very similar to his 2013 chassis, which has helped his ramp-up time. He currently leads the Rookie of the Year chase in the Pro 1 category as well, which is helping his case to remain in the top tier of Formula D.

JEREMY LOWE

Mazda FC RX-7

Lowe has previously run as a privateer in the Pro 1 class, but is focusing solely on the Pro 2 class for this season. Lowe’s RX-7 remains largely the same as what he ran previously in the Pro 1 class, helping him with the familiarity of the chassis. A pair of final-four appearances has kept Lowe in the running for the championship, showing that consistency may be what it takes to win the class.

JAMES EVANS

Sikky Nissan 350Z

Evans, who also owns Sikky Manufacturing, which makes swap kits for Chevy motors into import chassis, has earned a top 16 and a top four, as well as some healthy qualifying points to remain high in contention for the championship. Evans’ previous car was also a 350Z chassis, a fact which likely helped him get this new chassis dialed in faster.

ANDY HATELEY

Hateley BMW E30

Hateley last competed in Formula D in 2007 in a 350Z, and has spent nearly four years building the LS3-powered BMW E30 he’s competing in today. Hateley has been patient, not wanting to bring the car out until it is fully prepared the way he wants, and 2014 is finally the year for his re-entry into the series. The car is still being developed, but Hateley’s almost 10 years of driving experience in various levels of competitive drifting make him one of the most experienced drivers on the Pro 2 grid.

CARL RYDQUIST

Nissan 350Z

Rydquist also previously competed in a 350Z, although this car is a different chassis that he resurrected over the past two seasons. This current chassis was originally built for Robbie Nishida and earned a pair of podium finishes before it was relegated to be scrapped. Rydquist earned a top qualifier effort in Florida and a third-place finish, but a late crash in practice kept him out of the Seattle grid. Look for Rydquist to bounce back in Texas.

NATE HAMILTON

Nissan 240SX

Hamilton is now in his sophomore effort in Formula Drift, and has finally started to gain some confidence in his car. He was also unfortunately involved in the late practice crash in Seattle which kept him from making the top 16 grid, but his second place finish in Florida has his competitors keeping a close eye on him. With Texas being his home state, “Lil’ Tex” Hamilton will be looking to get back in the swing of things at Texas Motor Speedway.

n 2011, Dai Yoshihara won the Formula Drift championship in his Discount Tire/Falken Tire Nissan S13 Coupe. While the car was praised as being one of the best engineered S13s at the time, it hadn’t remained as competitive as the horsepower wars ramped up. At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas last year, Falken announced that Dai would be moving to a BRZ chassis for the 2014 season. What wasn’t announced at the time were the powerplant and livery. Many expected the car to contain a V8 motor, but the decision to go with a turbocharged V8 ensured that the Falken Tire team could be competitive for several seasons to come, while a partnership with Forza Motorsports allowed the team to

"AT FIRST, THE CAR WAS REALLY HARD TO DRIVE. IT TOOK US A WHILE TO GET USED TO [IT], BUT I CAN ALREADY TELL IT’S GOING TO BE A BETTER CAR THAN THE S13."

put part of the livery design into the hands of fans. When the car debuted on the streets of Long Beach earlier this year, it was clear that it was one of the most powerful cars on the track. Built by Redline Performance Engines, the aluminum 7.0-liter Chevy motor from RHS was given a full overhaul that included 10:1

compression JE Pistons, All Pro heads and BC internals. Custom JSP Fabrication exhaust and turbo manifolds were built to power the massive Garrett GTX5008 turbocharger, while a custom Wilson intake manifold was paired to a 90 mm throttle body to feed air into the engine. Turbosmart products take care of the wastegate and blowoff valve, while a Garrett intercooler, Griffin dual pass radiator, and Setrab oil and power steering cooler keep all fluids and air frosty. K&N air and oil filters were paired with Mobil 1 oil to keep the air and oil clean, while SPD Motorsports made the engine fit and took care of all the intercooler piping and motor plate fabrication. The given numbers of 900+ horsepower and 800+ lb-ft of torque are lower than actual, because the car was spinning tires on multiple dyno tests. The brain of the car is a Motec M800 ECU. As a testament to how advanced a Formula Drift car is, nearly every single movement on the car is captured and recorded. Motec linear shock sensors, GPS and Yaw sensors, a Motec Accelerometer, and Motec pressure transducers are all combined to capture everything from suspension travel to acceleration and lateral G-forces to make chassis adjustments. All the important information is fed through the Motec SDL race dash via a PDM15 gateway and keypad. If you thought today’s drift cars were all about big motors and finesse, you might be surprised to see how much data goes into every adjustment.

FALKEN TIRE / DISCOUNT TIRE SUBARU BRZ DRIVER: Daijiro “Dai” Yoshihara ENGINE: Chevrolet LS7 7.0L V8 HORSEPOWER: 962 hp TORQUE: 832 ft-lb

All of the power is driven from the McLeod Clutch through the G-Force GSR four-speed transmission through the Driveshaft Shop custom driveshaft and Winters 10-inch quick change rear end. Traction is gained through the Falken Azenis 615K drift tires, which wrap Dai’s signature Yoshihara Design ‘Champion’ model wheels. Suspension is handled through custom KW Suspension coilovers with custom top-mount and camber plates designed by Mike Kojima, with RS-R USA front knuckles and custom steering rack modifications and front lower control arms. Stopping power is handled by six-pot front and dual four-pot rear Wilwood calipers, with Wilwood pads and fluids all around. Outside, the sleek BRZ body was modified with a TRA Kyoto Rocket Bunny V2 aero kit, complete with a trunk spoiler and DAI edition canards and splitter. Lightweight Seibon Carbon panels replace the hood, doors, trunk, and roof pieces, while Spyder Auto DRL LED headlights and JDM red LED taillights complete the look. Inside the car, a pair of Sparco seats (Circuit model on the driver’s side and Rev model passenger seat) are paired with Sparco six-point HANS-compliant harnesses. A full custom roll cage with side intrusion bars was fabricated by SPD to meet the Formula D sporting regulations.

The BRZ was the second to enter the Formula D series after Toshiki Yoshioka’s car ran the 2013 season with an upgraded 2.5L EJ257 Subaru STI motor. Several Scion FR-Ss have been campaigned in the series over the past few years, though none have earned a final-four finish, showing that the learning curve of the ZN6 is substantially higher than many of the other chassis on grid. From the factory, the ZN6 chassis is designed to have a low center of gravity and allow the driver more direct feedback, but pushing the limits of what the Toyota and Subaru engineers created by drifting the chassis has proved to be tricky. Yoshihara was given a pair of testing days in late March to get used to the new chassis, and found that the car drove much differently than his previous Nissan S13. With additional testing, the team has been able to dial the chassis in, learning how much traction is necessary without making the car too tight to drive. “At first, the car was really hard to drive” said the 2011 Formula D champion. “It took us a while to get used to [it], but I can already tell it’s going to be a better car than the S13. We have so much more power we can finally keep up with all the other cars. I can’t wait to put this car on the podium. I know we will get there soon!”

LIVE WINNER Fitted Toronto

ALEXANDRE ANGERS 2004 Acura TL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CIMON B PHOTOGRAPHY

Taking the winning Tuner Battlegrounds spot at Fitted Toronto is just a starting point for Alexandre Angers and his luxuriously low Acura TL. Angers aims to keep improving to make his LowLevel TL even more of a showstopper. Being a mechanic himself, he and his friends have made this car a rolling showcase of fit and finish.

Angers set out to build something simple and clean, but also something he could drive on the daily. The TL catches your eye with OEM aero bits pulled from Type-S and A-Spec TL models all wrapped in a rich, custom brown wrap by Custom Graphique from Angers’ hometown of Saint-Hyancinthe, Quebec. Jérémie Lecours pulled and rolled the fenders, shaved the bumper, and fabricated front and side splitters to add to the Acura’s presence. “The biggest challenge has been to fit the wheels,” laughs Angers. “I never really calculated or tried the wheels before buying them. I fitted the car, not the wheels!” We’re really glad Angers did end up fitting the wheels on there because these high polish CCWs are works of art. They're 18x10.5 -7et in front and 18x11 +7et in the rear, combined with neochrome ARP hardware, bolted to AirREX suspension and angled up into the

fenders by Skunk2 and Ingalls camber kits. If this car is the masterpiece, the wheels are the focal point. Peeking through the blue-tinted windows gives view of a VIP-inspired interior. Junction Produce is everywhere. Neckpad pillows are on every headrest, sirotuna and fusa knots hang around and there’s even a cover on Angers’ tissue box. The VipdOut center tray and wood-floored trunk are definitely point scorers. “It’s a passion and a way to express myself by building what I like,” says Angers. “I’m doing it to my own satisfaction and I’m not looking for others’ approval.” That’s the fantastic attitude that goes into building a winning car. Even though Angers asks for no approval, he got it in spades by winning the Tuner Battlegrounds event at Fitted. The only people he has to worry about hating on his ride now are those pesky cops in Quebec scoping for stanced rides.

WHAT CAR DO YOU CURRENTLY DRIVE? I drive a black 1999 VW Jetta. It has a manual transmission. Most people are shocked I know how to drive stick shift. It has pink accents and a bright pink headliner that I love! The car is adorable, but not very reliable, unfortunately.

WHAT ARE YOU FUTURE PLANS?

My long term goal is to be a physical therapist working with retired athletes. I hope to open my own facility that backs up to the beach so that we can do some exercises and classes out on the sand.

WHO MOTIVATES AND INSPIRES YOU? My family really motivates and inspires me. We have a very close relationship and try our best to keep each other positive and reaching for our goals. My family has really stood by me and helped me through tough times to get me to where I am today.
