ISSUE PREVIEW

PERFORMANCE! HORSEPOWER! TUNING! $12,000 ENGINE REBUILD,

SONNNNNN!

A

pologies, I got carried away watching Regular Car Reviews on YouTube. The truth is, little gets us — the PASMAG crew — more excited than the prospect of taking apart a car with the intent of putting it back together to go faster, handle better and stop quicker. It’s a great feeling to see a well-executed project come to fruition. With that said, success only comes with strategic planning, realistic budgeting and choosing the proper (not always the most expensive) components for your driving aspirations. Our Ultimate Performance Guide is set to help you tackle all those things and more. With buyers guides, 101s and words from some of the most influential tuners and shopkeepers in our industry, we’ve put together an issue that tackles many of the common issues associated with tuning projects. For starters, we dive into the empty engine bays of some of the most popular platforms awaiting upgraded power. Ryan Basseri, head of Rywire, and Eric Daoust, owner of Teknotik, give us the downlow on everything from Civics and B18s to 240s and LS V8s, and the issues surrounding bigger powerplants in smaller cars. Later on, our Performance on a Budget feature looks at where you should — and shouldn’t — be putting your money as a novice or first-time builder. Time to start saving, folks. Builder/tuner extraordinaire Niel Tjin has been making waves in the industry since it began, and his latest endeavors have seen him working on some of the auto manufacturing industry’s most prized possessions. He’s been working closely with Ford for much of the last five years, and we look at the air ride Mustang GT that started it all. Never thought air would complement horsepower? Find out more inside. Next — or NEXTMOD, we should say — we visit those JDM specialists to get a glimpse inside their shop and some of the gems within. These guys have stayed true to themselves since the beginning, and now have one of the most stacked performance vehicle lineups on the continent. In our Legends Series last issue, we looked at racing and tuning veteran Kenny Tran. This time, we’re featuring his 1,000+ horsepower Jotech Stage 6-S GT-R. Continuing the Legends

Series for this issue, we have a long and intimate chat with engineer and building mastermind Bisi Ezerioha of Bisimoto Engineering. If you’ve ever wanted to know where the incredible creativity stems from one of the industry’s best, you’ll want to read this. Stephan Papadakis has already been the focus of our Legends Series in the past, and this year he’s looking at adding another trophy to his mantel by capturing a third Formula D title with the Scion tC2. Past champion Tanner Foust and current championship hopeful Fredric Aasbo give us their professional insights on just how capable the tC is. If you’re looking for a new project car, this might be what pushes you over the edge. Of course, you can’t perform if you don’t have the proper upgrades, so our Buyers Guides in this issue feature the best of the necessities: intakes, exhaust, forced induction, engine essentials, drivetrain, chassis, aero, suspension, brakes and, perhaps most importantly, oil and lube. It’s important to keep everything slippery and wet, because A) you’ll get more power, and B) it’ll prolong the life of those (not too cheap) upgrades you just laid down some serious cash for. It used to be that performance was based on one thing: horsepower. Now, we know that it’s but a fraction of what makes you go fast. From exhaust to ECU tunes, suspension, brakes, and a little word from the wise, we hope this issue lets you see the whole picture of how to maximize your ride and, most importantly, get some fun out of it.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

BY MICKY SLINGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEVIN CHOI, DANTE DAMANTI, TERRENCE GAMBLE, JOHN LIWANAG

The Dos and Don’ts of Under-Hood Transplants Two things have been constant in the world of car tuning and modification: first is the need to stand out. A scene can easily become oversaturated if everyone does the same thing. Being the one breath of fresh air can get you plenty of notice and respect. The other constant is the quest for horsepower. One could argue that the need for speed has existed since the idea of the car was conceptualized. Thankfully, there’s something that falls under both constants and gives enthusiasts access to both worlds. That something is engine swapping. A person swaps an engine for one of two

reasons: to replace an older one that doesn’t work anymore, or to make significant gains over the stock powerplant. An engine swap is also a new beginning to your car-building journey. According to Ryan Basseri, head honcho at Rywire, swapping an engine should be your go-to for more power and a clean slate. “It’s just a better starting point to make power without going to internal work, bigger turbos, more boost, stuff like that,” he says. “If you swap the engine, you’re at a more factory starting point and you have a lot more room to build.”

When you think of engine swaps, your mind probably drifts off to a place of beastly 2JZs, fire-spitting SR20DETs and growling 5.0-liter Coyotes. The reality is that the more common swaps are actually of the four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated variety. Honda enthusiasts have been doing the swap from SOHC to DOHC ever since VTEC kicked in, yo! It’s universal knowledge that the best way to make gains from your Civic’s D16 is to move on up to the B18. Owner of Teknotik, Eric Daoust has dealt exclusively with Hondas for years, and says that transplants are a natural progression. “As far as the Honda/Acura community is concerned, [swapping] is a totally accepted and normal part about modifying the vehicle,” he says. “The most popular for us is probably the B-series swap into most Honda chassis, but K-series engine swaps are quickly becoming more popular as those cars age and mileage goes up.” That’s good and all for Honda owners, but what about bigger blocks and higher outputs? Tired of blowing through apex seals like cheap bubblegum and think your RX-7 is ready for that badass LS1? V8 aficionado Mark Born from Bishop Customs has some food for thought for those looking to dive into bigger motors. “There’s a lot of stuff to think about,” warns Born. “What is the ultimate goal for this vehicle? Is this a track car? Is it a daily driver? Is it a weekend driver? Do you want it to sound mean, or do you want a sleeper? Is the wife driving it as well? Are the kids going to be driving the car?” Another thing to think about is the law. We’re looking at you and your CARB laws, California. Having any type of modifications to your car, especially an engine swap, can also mean a huge pain trying to find an in-

24

surance company that will cover your monster in the garage. Basseri knows the strict rules in his Cali stomping grounds of first hand, but warns the larger issue is the responsibility of doing the swap itself, instead of the responsibility that comes with the modification. “Your ability to finish the swap is a huge, huge thing,” he explains. “I know a lot of people who build over their heads and it’s not that they’re not able to do it, but they’re like, ‘Well if I do this, then I might as well do that,’ and they keep wanting to do add-ons. Whether it be slight internal work or fancier parts or maybe a nicer wire harness, that might push them over their budget or just over their time.” As with any major modification, being able to support them has to be at the front of your mind. If you’re putting a powerplant into your car that doubles your original engine’s output, are the brakes enough to stop all the extra power? Also, how heavy is that new block of metal? Your suspension better be up

ANOTHER THING TO THINK ABOUT IS THE LAW. WE’RE LOOKING AT YOU AND YOUR CARB LAWS, CALIFORNIA.

to the task, otherwise your ride is going to be bowing down, but not out of respect. Swapping in a new engine is a bit of a daunting task if you don’t know what you’re doing. There are some DIY guys out there that may be all gung-ho about fabricating their own mounts and harnesses, but what about the average enthusiast looking to have an engine under the hood that’s as unique as their vehicle? That’s where the always-amazing aftermarket comes in. With the surge in engine swaps, there’s a kit out there for almost any chassis and engine combination available. “The aftermarket is very supportive of putting all of these different swaps in different vehicles,” says Daoust. “There are now kits and there are all these swap parts made to be able to make that possible.” You want to be like your drift heroes and toss an LS-series V8 in your 240SX? There are companies that specialize in making mounts and headers to make sure the whole thing fits right. Born does have some solid points to think about before diving into the swap aftermarket though, especially when dealing with one-off companies that aren’t as established as others. “The quality control isn’t always there; these are custom made one-off parts so they’re not always going to be exactly be the same,” says Born. “Especially when you have a lot of stuff made out of bent tubing and stuff that’s welded together. You bend up all the parts and weld it together and it’s a completely different shape and now

Trending_EngSwap_16.07_v4.indd 4

because of the heat, it is twisted and warped and doesn’t fit. Born goes on to say that these companies are usually pretty good about replacing these parts — all it takes is a call and an explanation — but wouldn’t you want the part you paid for the first time? With the ease of swapping in an engine for that unique build, some say everything has already been done. To really stand out, you need to do something extreme. Basseri disagrees. He feels that there’s always a way to put a twist on your build and make it your own. “There’s still plenty to do and they’re all cool in their own way,” explains Basseri. “Guys are doing twin turbos, single turbos, individual throttle bodies, crazy electrical systems with tons of sensors and ethrottle — all these things. There are still a million things you can do that’s different from the next guy.” There is one piece of advice from these engine-swapping veterans that is unanimous across the board: do your research and plan your resources. Pick an engine you can handle and still be happy with long down the road, and don’t cut corners to jam it in the bay. Make sure you budget not only your money, but also your time. One of the worst things to happen is seeing a passion project become a chore, get 80% done and end up at a swap meet or in the classifieds. So, do your research, mount a sweet engine, and put your ride in a class of its own. Who knows, maybe we’ll see you in here for a feature someday.

MODIFIED MUSCLE Tjin Edition Puts a Spin on the Timeless Pony

N

BY JORDAN LENSSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GENE TJIN

Neil Tjin’s tuning experience stretches across generations, starting with the beloved Bomex body kits that started the tuning revolution in the mid-1990s. His work has been seen on countless builds that have adorned the pages of many magazines, and stolen the imagination of thousands of onlookers at SEMA. His ability to translate his vision into the real world has seen him lead major projects from several automotive manufacturers, including Honda, General Motors, Scion and, most recently, Ford. Working with the latter we’ve witnessed several intriguing builds, including the first project of Tjin’s Ford chapter — the 2011 Tjin Edition Mustang GT. After building his monstrous, army green Chevy Camaro in 2009 (winner of the GM Design Award, Best in Show at SEMA), Ford had its sights set on Tjin as one of the first builders for its SEMA projects. The 2011 Mustang marked the first time Ford fitted the fifth-gen GT with a 5.0 powerplant, and the company wanted someone that would be able to capture both the SEMA crowd and the Mustang’s raw, innate power. Tjin’s baseline was a good one to begin with. In base form, the rear-wheel-drive GT already puts out an impressive 412 base horsepower and a tire-melting 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. Given Tjin’s close relationship as Marketing Director with the Air Power Group and Vortech Superchargers, it only made sense to increase those numbers exorbitantly.

2012 Tjin Edition / UTI Ford Mustang GT 650 hp > Paxton supercharger > MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust > ForgeStar one-off wheels > Air Lift air suspension > Street Scene aero

FAST FACT

“There are two cool things about this build,” Tjin says. “I was the first builder for Ford and the new Mustang, and the serial number on the blower is 002, which is actually the first [production] supercharger for the new 5.0L [Coyote] motor... It is also a limited edition because it’s the Black Series.” While a power increase was expected, it was Tjin’s overall vision that first caught the Ford brass off guard, with a custom Axalta (formerly DuPont) Samurai Gold paint scheme, off-center racing stripe and, perhaps most surprising, an Air Lift digital air suspension setup. “Now, air management is completely different with what AccuAir and Airrex is doing. Back then, it was Air Lift and a couple of the modern muscle companies, but to be honest, we did it to be different. I did it on my G8 in 2008 — people think it’s all about hydraulics, low riders, but it’s changed. My G8 had 600 horsepower and was on air, the green Camaro had almost 800 horsepower and it was on air.”

Although it took some convincing, Tjin got Ford’s blessing to move forward due in no small part to the positive reception his past projects have received. “It was my first pitch with them, so I wanted to keep it really clean and simple, following our typical transition builds,” he explains. “We did step outside the box a little — it doesn’t have the traditional Mustang lines — it was more Lamborghini style with the two-tone orange and gray with the stripe off to the side.” It’s Tjin’s attention-to-detail that really sets him and this Mustang apart from the rest. The paint chip was selected and his painter, Luis of L&R Auto Body, matched the color and sent it to Axalta — just for this car. The stripes aren’t vinyl, and the Forgestar wheels were sent away for paint matching. The pinstriping and Tjin Edition emblems on each wheel match the orange employed in the race stripe, trunk-mounted air tanks and Tjin Edition Status leather race seats and shift boot — all customized

This car was the 2012 Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Auto Sweepstakes giveaway car!

"To give the new 5.0 a bit of a throwback flavor, Tjin opted for a set of '69 fender badges that he flush mounted into the existing fenders."

by the Tjin Edition team. Even the Baer brake kit received the fiery hot swatch. To give the new 5.0 a bit of throwback flavor, Tjin opted for a set of ’69 fender badges that he flush mounted into the existing fenders. “It’s just something different — more hot-rodder, street-rodder style. We traced the emblem, cut it out of the fender, replaced the metal behind where the emblem sits and connected it.” All of this combines for a pretty neat package that instantly made it one of the most versatile performance/show Mustangs around. The 20th anniversary Vortech V-3 Si-Trim centrifugal supercharger and Nitrous Express system pushes the stock 412 horsepower to a blistering 656 and, while this might appear to be a massive departure for the Mustang, thanks to a set of American Racing headers and MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust, it’s a V8 with a rumble that harkens back to the pinnacle of big block American muscle in the ’60s and ’70s. The entire Vortech system is also capable to withstand future engine upgrades if needed, up to 22 psi of boost, a maximum spool of 52,000 rpm and 775 horsepower through a 3.5-inch inlet.

In show mode, the Air Lift digital suspension brings the ’Stang down far enough to scrape the undercarriage, but Tjin insists that, in combination with the Eibach sway bars and a few fabrication adjustments, the air system is surprisingly capable and can handle all 656 horses from the Coyote V8. “It literally levels the car,” Tjin says. “Even if you’ve got big power and the car launches, it’s got all the controls built-in, so that whole notion of air [not working well] with horsepower — that’s gone out the window.” “On this car, we did have to work with MagnaFlow and Unique Fabrication to tweak the exhaust tubing, because it used to sit underneath the axles and the car couldn’t go as low in the back. So we re-ran all the exhaust piping to go above [the axle], and that also gave us another inch-and-a-half of travel.” Tjin’s first Mustang effort opened the door to a longstanding relationship with Ford that has led to two more Mustangs (inset), and 12 projects total. Currently, his team is working on a hulking new project, but it's two 2015 Mustang projects we can't wait to hear about. "[We've] got something in the works for UTI and something for Vortech. But I can't say much more!" he quips. And for now, that'll do just fine.

So, you want to go fast, eh? Nothing says genius like making your first trip to the local parts store and telling them exactly what part(s) you want. How do you know what to get? “The Internet,” you say? Let’s stop right there.

I

t’s a common conception, and a conveniently easy task to go to the Internet to seek all the information you will ever need on video games, the best eateries, and the Top 10 Most Overrated Supercars of All Time. Heck, the Internet is an incredible thing most of us are probably guilty of spending too much time with. But it’s cool, and it knows stuff. But guess what, the Internet isn’t always right. Nope, not always, and I refuse to get into a rant about all it’s not good for. But the short list is this: financial advice, dating advice and most imporCar parts tantly, performance vehicle modifications. True, there are some safe havens on the Net where you fund can get the real scoop on what mods you need, but why roll the dice on good advice when you can get it straight to the horses mouth? PASMAG sought to bring you some tidbits of info if you’re a first-timer (everyone has to start somewhere!) interested in souping up your car without cleaning out your bank account.

WHERE TO START? You can always bargain hunt if you want to spend little cash. The problem is, with anything automotive (and most things in life), you get what you pay for. Dropping any amount of money doesn’t necessarily mean it will make your car better – in some cases it does nothing at all. Your best bet is to have a plan and save up for quality upgrades rather than settling for a part because you can simply afford it. What is often the first “upgrade” for

first-time modders? The intake, or air filter. INTAKE GUIDE “For most people, BUYERS PAGE 74 the first thing they do is put an intake on,” says Brian Wong, owner of Advanced Powerhouse in Toronto. “Intakes are only $50 to a few hundred dollars, that’s why most people start there. It’s also the most overly marketed. Newer cars are all about efficiency and fuel consumption. If we can make more power with the same component, that will make it more efficient. Nowadays, new cars have such good intakes that an upgrade doesn’t always make much of a difference." So, what does he suggest instead? “People should start on the exhaust side, it’s much more important,” Wong says. “If you can’t shit, you can’t eat. It doesn’t matter how much you try, eventually you won’t be able to eat. But for any performance, even from a physics point of view, it has to start from the exhaust.” Eric Daoust, owner of Teknotik in Toronto, also believes that the gross amount of misinformation

floating around the Net, paired with an ever-changing technology landscape, means enthusiasts and builders have to be more aware than ever. Vehicles have advanced drastically over the last decade. So too has the aftermarket. “What was a really good thing to do five years ago, isn’t necessarily the best thing to do now,” he says. “Now, because production costs have come down and there are so many of these small, tailored companies that make custom parts for specific engines and do that rather economically, that’s changed the game as well.” “You could have a $700 Mugen header, but now there’s one that costs $200 to $300 that actually makes more power and is specifically engineered for that car. The downside to that is replica parts, the Tri-Y header for example is the best bang-for-the-buck header that you can put on, but the trade-off is that it comes at a cost, durability and dependability-wise [when it’s a knock-off].”

BRINGING PERFORMANCE BACK TO ITS ROOTS

Shops are the places the cool kids go when they truly want to immerse themselves in car culture. To a newcomer they might seem like sacred, exclusive ground, but really, they’re the place to be if you’re at all interested in progressing and learning more about the industry. Car shops are everywhere, but in any given geographical area, there are few reputable ones that specialize in a certain craft, and even fewer that have a tight knit group who practices what they preach.

NEXTMOD is one of those shops that cater to the tuning enthusiast, with a no-bull approach that emphasizes quality over all else. Their focus on JDM means they have their ears to the ground, on all the latest JDM kits, upgrades and trends. Located in Markham, Ontario and headed by Peter Pang, NEXTMOD focuses on providing the best service to some of the nicest import cars this side of the 48. The proof is in the 28 trophies the group won at the latest Importfest in Toronto this year, including 'Baddest Team' and podium domination in almost every category. Collectively, the list of ve-

hicle emblems is a cornucopia of the hottest around, in no particular order or quantity: S2000, FR-S, EVO, GT-R, Civic, Supra, FR-S and NSX, plus much, much more. The cars you see in here are but a fraction of the full roster. Each one is decked out in the rarest, latest and greatest, with some focused on streetability and others on track capability. Typically, the audio comes secondary, although many of these cars have no shortage. It’s a roster stacked high enough to keep every other car club on top of its game. Just don’t call them a club. “People have these misconceptions about how to join NEXTMOD,” Pang says. “Basically if you’re a good person and you like the same stuff - if you like JDM, you like quality. You don’t even have to buy the craziest parts, you just have to be a good guy.” That sentiment couldn’t be more obvious when you step into their flagship store and headquarters in Markham. The shop is laid out in an open atmosphere, and at any given time, you’ll see friends and cobuilders in and out just to chat, get advice or hang. The front parking lot looks like a small car show more than anything and, during my short visit, I couldn’t help but go outside and ask questions of each car that came in. The owners were more than happy to tell me about them. So, what does the shop typically do? Their responsibilities are spread out across two locations in the Greater Toronto Area, with another in Ottawa. The Markham location deals with parts sales, decal and vinyl placement, tire fittings and appointment setups from the East end. On the West side, NEXTMOD Mississauga, owned by Tom Nguyen, covers the same responsibilities, with the added benefit of a lift for full maintenance, performance and body kit installs. Ottawa’s operation, run by Steven Taing, is the same.

For any task outside of their realm, NEXTMOD has partnered with leading performance shops to provide customers with 360-degrees of vehicle support. APH, or Advanced Powerhouse, deals with dyno testing and performance tuning in the GTA, while SFG Automotive and Skyz Garage takes care of performance upgrade installs for the Markham and Ottawa areas, respectively. These relationships have helped forge NEXTMOD as the go-to source for tuners in Ontario and beyond, which the group attributes to years of hard work. “Like everyone else, we had our own cars, modding them, attending every show, every meet. Then our reputation just grew from there,” Nguyen says. “Luckily in Canada, we started when everything began, and we continued with it, so our reputation was kept alive with it. Now, if you try to start something fresh it’s really hard, but since we were there from the beginning, we

were able to build a good rapport with people.” That reputation saw the group open its first official operation in Markham, where the group would gather, plan and provide services to customers and enthusiasts looking for real JDM parts, straight from the source. After a few years of great success, Ottawa was the site of the next location, followed a few short months later by Mississauga. Now, just five years later, NEXTMOD and its close partners are established as leaders for sourcing, building and tuning JDM machines for show competitors and performance enthusiasts. The group’s tight-knit and customer-oriented approach provides an atmosphere that brings enthusiasts of all levels together. The cars are cool, they’ve got the connections, and if you’re unsure about anything, either they, or someone they know, has the answer. Still, after all these years, it’s their core friendship that allows NEXTMOD to stay so relaxed and focused. “Basically it’s just a bunch of friends who got together, build cars together and own a business together,” Nguyen says. “When we have meetings...we’ll meet up at someone’s house for a barbecue,” Pang says. “It’s regular friend stuff and cars are just a part of it. Not much has really changed since the beginning.”

KENNY TRAN AND CREW CRANK OUT ONE OF THE MOST FEARSOME YET BY MICKY SLINGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOTECH MOTORSPORTS

T

here is a place in Garland, Texas where monsters are born. You may have been told there were (or weren’t) monsters under your bed when you were younger. Well, Jotech Motorsports is the place they reside – at least until they can squeeze out a few extra horses. Jotech is owned by Kenny Tran, but you won’t find him sitting, stuffed up in an office. Tran is right out there at the dyno, putting his many, many years of knowledge into making his next customer’s ride everything they could have dreamed of. This is what Jotech specializes in. They

offer “power packages” in increasing stages and even track specific bundles to ensure the customer receives the best for whatever road or track they intend to drive. Another specialty for Tran and his team is the Nissan GT-R, specifically the R35. To say their knowledge of the car is extensive is actually understating it a bit. In 2012, the shop reached a milestone when it broke the 1,000 horsepower mark with a GT-R. Naturally, Tran owns an R35 and has tuned it himself with the most powerful, street legal package that Jotech offers; the Stage 6-S.

MONSTER MAKER With over 1,000 horsepower beating under the bonnet, it’s an exciting car all in itself, but the attention to detail and quality parts are almost as attention grabbing as the power figures. Other than the expertise that has been accumulated with the R35 over the years, Tran’s reason for choosing it above other platforms seems to be in line with other GT-R enthusiasts. “I test drove it once and absolutely fell in love with it,” says Tran. “I love the technology and how ‘mod friendly’ it is to work on and tune.” As many gearheads know, a 1,000-plus horsepower build is neither all-engine or forced induction, it’s a marriage of the two that, with some dyno tuning, brings a screaming beast to life. A full-blown HKS turbo kit helps boost the VR38DETT engine to over a grand of glory. Arias pistons and Pauter connecting rods work together with a Ferrea valvetrain and Kelford camshafts to simulate the quickening heartbeat of this adrenaline junkie. A Cobb Tuning Accessport V3 and HKS EVC boost controller let the GT-R’s brain know what to do to make the most of the mods. “I like the HKS turbo kit because they are such quality parts,” Tran explains of his parts choices. “The engine components I like using are Arias, Pauter and Ferrea parts because they are the same parts we’ve used in our race cars.”

“I test drove it once and absolutely fell in love with it. I love the technology and how ‘mod friendly’ it is to work on and tune.” - Kenny Tran

While this is a heaven-sent list to put under the hood, Tran says that things would go a bit differently if he could hop in a time machine. “If I had to do it all over again, I would start with a stroker motor with bigger displacement and longer rod ratios to get more torque,” he admits. Now, he says that the intent in building this car was for both race and show, so let’s get to the goodies that fall into both categories. Shall we? The R35 houses HKS Hipermax IV coilovers under its haunches. Whiteline sway bars and an assortment of SPL control arms and links keep the GT-R tight and tidy. Bronze-centered, 20-inch HRE C-106 wheels are wrapped in meaty 275/35 Toyo fronts, and even meatier 315/30 Nitto tires fill out the rear fender gap nicely. Past the polished lips and bronze centers, there are twopiece rotors – 400 mm in front and 380 in the rear – which are drilled to cool them down after trying to stop this machine. A 1,000-plus horsepower build is neither all-engine or forced induction, it’s a marriage of the two that, with some dyno tuning, brings a screaming beast to life. If someone were to actually see the front of this R35, they would notice that an APR carbon fiber lip sets things off, while the LED headlights from a 2015 model year GT-R are nice touches. A carbon fiber rear spoiler finishes things off at the back, the place where everyone will be watching it fade into the distance. Inside is all race rather than show. tech in the GT-R, this is highly doubtful, but a nice thought nonetheless. At this point, most builders/tuners would take a step back and bask in the glory of what their two hands had created. However, in true project car fashion, “it’s never done,” says Tran. He would love to see more power come out of his personal Godzilla. After it’s done demolishing Texas, Tran will finally be able to take part in his favorite part of the build process: “seeing the final result.”

Chew on this for a moment: when the hot, new Fox-body Mustang was introduced with the 5.0-liter shortblock V8, it produced a whopping 225 horsepower – on a good day with a tailwind – at the flywheel. This modern, aluminum block and head, dual overhead cam, forged crank pony belts out a stout 302 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque, even before modifications. That’s 22 horsepower more than the 2003 Mustang GT’s 4.6 liter mill could muster. When Ma ordered it through Ford’s SEMA development program, he asked for the short 3.31:1 ratio rear axle, giving it a burst of acceleration. Good enough for zero-to-60 sprints in 5.8 seconds, a mark which easily eclipses the 2003 SN95 chassis

GT too. Truth in numbers, this is a quick car for 90 percent of its target market, and a far better car than most others in the sub-$25k (after rebates, etc.) range in terms of horsepower-to-dollars. So, here is where Ma started his build. Now, no SEMA car ever rolls through those doors without some exterior modifications, so Michael dove straight in with a SEM Products Candy Orange beauty treatment, expertly applied over a quality Seibon carbon fiber hood and rear hatch, and a custom carbon fiber roof panel and rear wing. Those stripes are the reverse result of careful masking, allowing the gorgeous CF weave to show through. A 3D Carbon lip kit is also used in combination with an APR Performance carbon fiber

splitter. The proper ride height is achieved with a premium set of KW Variant 3 coilovers, coupled with Granatelli Motorsport chassis braces, sway bars, a panhard bar and rear lower control arms. The Granatelli package even includes the driveshaft safety loop. Take no chances, go whole hog, right? Brakes come from Wilwood, the 20-inch, perfect-fitment wheels from TSW and, while we might not love blacked-out wheels, the satin black finish adds a cool dose of attitude to the final project. Somewhere in the planning stages, Michael’s brother Steve happened to meet some of the people from Jada Toys and, luckily for Michael, arranged introductions for plans to jointly work on the build.

“...[Jada] liked what they heard and were very interested,” Ma says. “This car was a collaboration with Jada Toys, as it’s always been a dream to see one of my own cars made into a toy, built for showcasing my work and SEMA.” With Ford and Jada behind the project, Ma said it wound up being quite a bit different from his initial plans. While he wouldn’t elaborate, we know from first-hand experience that this isn’t uncommon with project vehicles and experienced builders expect this. They solve problems, find solutions and still manage to bring dreams to fruition (and on time) for SEMA every year. They do so with equipment like Recaro seats, an Oink Fabrication roll cage and a carbon fiber wrapped dash on the insides of their shiny creations. We drool because we love it. Ma has also outfitted the interior with two 12-inch Kicker CompVX subwoofers where the rear seats should be, two Jensen Mobile amps driving the four 5x7 Jensen speakers and those subs, plus a seveninch Jensen in-dash receiver with navigation. There’s even a Whistler Automotive Pro3600 radar detector with built-in, remote-mounted front and rear detections units. Although the stock power is plenty quick, Ma upped it even more with an Injen intake, Magnaflow cat-back exhaust and tuning from a Bama Performance module. American Muscle supplied the one-piece driveshaft, while he chose Spec Clutches for the Stage 3 clutch and flywheel. Never overlook the importance of getting rid of unwanted inertial mass in the drivetrain, wherever possible. Eliminate it ruthlessly and you’ll be rewarded. Or ticketed. “I like the new generation of Fords,” says Ma. “It might be a V6, but it’s pretty damn quick. It’s definitely a fun car to floor around town in.” It’s the age-old tale of 'boy plays with toy cars growing up, man builds real car for show' - except this time, it’s been flipped. Car becomes toy, man keeps toy on a shelf in his garage for his son to play with someday. These stories will never grow old.

KNOWS BEST PAPADAKIS RACING AIMS FOR THE RECORD BOOKS STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB LEVETON (WITH NOTES FROM JEN HORSEY)

Over the years, Papadakis Racing has become synonymous with motorsport innovation. After transitioning to drifting from a successful run in sport compact drag racing, the team has scored two championships, eight event wins and 25 podium results to fill out the team’s trophy case. This pair of Scion tCs represents the fourth and fifth competitive drift cars built by Papadakis Racing, each one showcasing some of the most innovative technologies in competitive drifting. PASMAG insiders pulled some strings to get both cars in one location for a first-

time-ever photo shoot showcasing both builds at once. After winning back-to-back Formula Drift championships in a 350Z, Papadakis Racing was looking for a new challenge to start the 2009 season. At the time, several teams had experimented with V8 engine motor swaps into nontraditional cars, but none had explored the potential of an authentic NASCAR V8 motor. Teaming up with Toyota Motor Manufacturing Company and Scion USA, a vision came together to use one of the Phase 9 TRD motors from Toyota’s NASCAR truck series in a drift car.

“When we first had the concept of using the tC, it was a time when drifting was an open book and anything you dreamed up, you could put on the track,” says Tanner Foust, then the team’s driver. “So, when Stephan said I could drive any car as long as it was a Scion tC, I said, ‘Okay, let’s get a NASCAR V8 from TRD and throw that in there!’” The planets aligned. Due to a regulation change for the coming 2009 season, Toyota’s NASCAR division had a handful of Phase 9 motors sitting in a warehouse that they couldn’t use in competition. One of those was earmarked for the drift program.

KNOWS BEST But the engine package was only part of the puzzle. The front-wheel drive Scion tC platform had to be converted to rear-wheel drive for drifting. Under a Formula Drift rule allowing the change (if a front-wheel or allwheel drive model was available on the same chassis internationally), the series deemed the conversion legal for drifting competition based on the JDM Toyota Avensis, which comes in a 4WD model in Japan. It’s safe to say there was no prior blueprint to building the car, considering how out-of-thebox the build was at the time. For Papadakis Racing, the project was a major mission that occupied them completely in the off-season between 2008 and 2009. “The one thing we did for four months straight was just build that car,” recalls team owner Stephan Papadakis. “It was a huge undertaking because we were doing something that nobody had done before. There was nobody to call and ask their opinion or videos to look up on YouTube or anything. We built it all from our ideas.” Fabrication started with a cut in the firewall to set the motor as far back in the engine bay as possible. A custom mounting plate was fabricated and the rest of the engine bay was built around the engine. “We were at the point where we cut out so much of the car that we were worried it wouldn’t be legal,” says Papadakis. “We ran two approvals of the firewall design past officials at Formula Drift to get the car accepted for competition.” The motor presented its own set of dilemmas. A NASCAR team needs to achieve a different kind of performance than a drift team does, and considerable effort went into making the TRD V8 work for its new motorsport. “When we first got the engine in the car, it was actually very disappointing to drive because it had no torque or horsepower under 7,000 rpm,” Foust recalls. “But then Steph went to work with Ed Pink and they reworked the engine to have a thicker torque band and still make power through 8,200 rpm.” Ed Pink Racing Engines facilitated the conversion from carbureted NASCAR specification to AEM-managed fuel injection – years before the rest of the NASCAR field was required to make a similar switch. Combined with a fourspeed G-force dog-box transmission mated to

an ACT clutch, the engine package was one of the most progressive setups at the time, pushing out well over 600 crank horsepower through Motegi Tracklite wheels and Hankook Ventus R-S3 tires, which are stopped by Wilwood brakes. Initially, the Rockstar tC1 was built with Mk4 Supra rear suspension geometry and upgraded Tokico shocks, but the car was later converted to standard tC suspension to meet a rulebook change for the 2010 season. The rest of the car was standard for its era, with a custom Rob Miller Race Cars roll cage, full array of Sparco safety equipment, AEM gauges and an AIM dash display. Save for a firewalled fuel cell and a relocated sealed battery, most of the trunk area has been cut out, which is legal per the rulebook. For the exterior, a custom Scion Racing widebody kit was spaced out additionally in the rear by the Papadakis crew to allow

for extra wheel clearance, and a Seibon Carbon hood, trunk and doors replace the OEM pieces. “We definitely put a lot of unconventional elements into that build, but we were used to that because that’s what we were doing back in our front-wheel drive drag racing, too,” says Papadakis. “We were the ones at the leading edge of the technology.” While the tC1 only competed for two full seasons in 2009 and 2010, the car picked up three event wins, eight total podium finishes and two top qualifier efforts. It is still the winningest Scion chassis to date, thanks in large part to the reliability and consistency of the build. “The philosophy on that car was very much about creating rear grip so that it would essentially do a wheelie around the track,” says Foust. “It didn't have much steering angle and it had skinny little tires in the front, but as long as your foot was on the

floor it would squat and pull itself out of a drift. It was a car that required full commitment to drive. I could run most of the tracks in FD in one gear and once you’re doing that, what more do you need?” Between the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Foust announced he would step away from drifting to pursue his rallycross and television careers, thus giving the Papadakis team an opportunity to bring in a new driver in Fredric Aasbo, as well as a new car. After discussions with Scion Racing, the team decided to move to the tC2 chassis and switch back to the four-cylinder 2AR engine and turbocharged roots that Papadakis Racing showed back in the days of import drag racing. “We wanted this car to be more authentic to the production model, with the four-cylinder engine,” Papadakis says.

Even so, the team’s drive for innovation is unstoppable, and the tC2 is the product of a shop that thrives on the challenge of progressive vehicle development. In the fourth season of campaigning the tC2 in Formula Drift, it became the most powerful four-cylinder in the series and one of the most competitive four-cylinder drift cars of all time. The team reports that its current 2.7L stroked motor configuration pushes out over 800 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque – although some mumblings in the pits suggest it may be pushing much closer to 1,000 horsepower at full throttle. It is mounted longitudinally, a configuration requiring the team to fabricate a crossbeam between the frame rails to hold a custom engine mount. Beyond that, the engine bay is surprisingly open, thanks in large part to the trunk-relocated radiator and minimal intercooler piping. The

Borg Warner EFR 8374 turbo features an internal blow-off valve to further help consolidate the piping required. “Years ago, when I first started getting into the car scene, what attracted me was you could modify these cars to show some of your personality,” says Papadakis. “After years of learning how to build racecars, I think my personality is more than a body kit and decals. It’s about fundamentally changing the car to make it the best expression of what a drift car should be.” This isn’t an average 2AR motor underneath the valve covers. JE Pistons 10.5:1 compression pistons, Carrillo rods and a Supertech valvetrain replace the OEM parts. Port Flow Design performed the head work, with final assembly happening at Papadakis Racing HQ. Your average 2AR motor sits at 2.5L of displacement, but by using a 1AR crank from a Toyota Sienna, the displacement has been increased to 2.7L. Shockingly enough, the stock 2AR oiling system is still there, filled with Torco SR-5 5W-40 motor oil. “The fact we are beating 1,000-plus horsepower, full-fledged V8 super sports cars on track says it all,” Aasbo says. “This tC is pushing the bar big-time when it comes to four-cylinder tuning and going against the stream in today’s competitive drifting scene.” Inside, a custom sheet metal center console houses a set of AEM gauges and various switches. An AIM MXL dash is fed information by the AEM Infinity EMS. Takata seats and harnesses hide the major difference between the tC1 and the tC2: a very large bottle of nitrous. Showcasing the capabilities of the AEM EMS, Papadakis has programmed the ECU to use nitrous oxide to help spool the turbo, being used only at certain thresholds of throttle and boost. This allows for much quicker turbo spooling without the engine strain of having nitrous spraying full-time. Outwardly, the car boasts the very first Rocket Bunny kit designed for the 2014 Scion tC. The suspension has undergone a consider-

But the tC1… that sound is amazing.” But for all its growling fury, power output remains the biggest evolution between the tC1 and the tC2. The newer car has as much as 150 percent more power. To date, the tC2 chassis has one FD event win, five podium finishes and a pair of top qualifying honors. As of press time, Frederic Aasbo sits second in points in a battle of epic proportions in the 2014 Formula Drift Championship. Although Papadakis Racing has won the Formula Drift championship twice now, a potential third championship with the current tC2 chassis would be even more satisfying, as it would mark the first-ever Formula D championship for both the Scion brand, and a four-cylinder car.

any would suggest that import tuning in North America was birthed in the cradle that is California. A passion rose up out of the enthusiast community for these efficient and reliable cars. In the ’90s, however, domestics still reigned supreme and an aftermarket for imports was almost non-existent. Back then, when you wanted to go faster, you had to do it yourself. Fabricate your own parts, test them, break them and make them better to make you faster. We at PASMAG are honored to have spoken with one of the forefathers of the import scene. One who not only

62

sparked the Honda aftermarket, but who also influenced the emergence of other key players to the game. That man is Bisi Ezerioha. Bisi’s story begins in West Africa, as he is originally from Nigeria. Raised by two scientist parents, he was influenced to chase his own career in the sciences. His mother was a biochemist and he says that that drove him to taking an interest in chemistry at a young age. Bisi accomplished a lot of things at a young age, actually. “I did a lot of things very young, so I skipped a few grades,” he says. “I don’t know if it still holds in my country today, but I entered university

TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2014 ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE GUIDE

when I was 16, the youngest ever. I took one year of petro-chemical engineering and didn’t really learn anything, so I came to the States like my parents did.” He attended university in the U.S., following in his parents' footsteps and focusing on chemical engineering. Aside from being a genius, Bisi was a lot like any of us growing up. He had an affinity for mechanical items and a fierce interest in cars, motorsport and going fast. “In my chemical engineering curriculum, I always studied subjects that related back to motorsports or going fast in my cars,” Ezerioha explains.

“I always was a keen student in terms of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer. All of those things were very important to me.” After arriving in the U.S. and attending university, Bisi decided he needed a car to get back and forth to school. He knew the criteria that needed to be met: it needed to be reliable and it needed to be fuelefficient. Since the Internet was not the information powerhouse it is today, car review websites weren’t available.

So, Bisi went to the bookstore and bought a consumer report handbook and fell in love with three cars. “I loved the look of the MR2 Turbo, but it was out of my range in terms of price as a student,” he recalls. “I loved the look of the Fiero; I wanted that car so badly, but the Pontiac Fiero didn’t have very high marks in terms of reliability, so that wasn’t good.” “The CR-X, it was perfect,” gushes Ezerioha. “The HF version was a lightweight model that had very high fuel efficiency, had very high marks in terms of safety and reliability and it looked very sexy, so for me, that was the perfect car.” Can you imagine Bisimoto Engineering’s flagship car being a Fiero? Yeah, we can’t either. Bisi picked up his blue, 1988 CR-X for about $2,800

with 100,000 miles on it and no options. After a month or so of driving, he heard a noise coming from the rear of his new to him Honda. The muffler had decayed and, even though Bisi knew it wasn’t right, he loved the deep tone that came from his car. The dealer offered no help, so he went to a local muffler shop that dealt primarily in domestics. They suggested putting a Dynomax Ultra Flo muffler on it. “It had this nice tone to it,” he recalls. “I felt a power increase and that was it; I was hooked. That got me thinking, ‘What could I do to extract more power from this?’” And so it began. The mod bug had dug itself deep and Bisi had no complaints. He would go back to that same muffler shop and get them to fabricate an unrestricted air

intake from exhaust piping, which he then fitted with an oversized K&N filter. Those were his first modifications to the CR-X, but that would prove to be a slippery slope. A while after his new upgrades, Bisi had a life changing event that would prove to be a catalyst to his serious performance modifications. It took place in the large and always relatively empty engineering parking lot of California State University in Long Beach. “One evening after class, I get in my CR-X and start it up,” Bisi recalls. “I was one of those guys who had the muffler, had the intake and I thought I was the fastest thing on planet earth. I was just so excited to have this intoxicating sound from the car.” “Well, as I was pulling out, three girls came out and the owner of a CR-X that was a couple cars down from me was one of the girls in this group,” says Ezerioha. “They got into a CR-X Si and they pull out and

I revved on them. She’s like, ‘What’s up?’ and I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So, we just go at it in the parking lot and she smoked me! Like, destroyed.” Sans his passenger seat, spare tire and two other occupants, Bisi really couldn’t figure out why he lost as badly as he did. He didn’t know about the differences in performance between his base HF CR-X and her Si. “We get to the end of the parking lot and they’re laughing at me, just busting up,” winces Bisi. “I was so embarrassed. That day, I swore that I would have the fastest CR-X on planet earth. That was my declaration to the universe that I would be the fastest. Period.” One of the first things that Bisi did, that no one else did, was explore carburetion. He was encouraged to chase this, as well as crazier designs to improve airflow, by a man named John Concialdi from AEM. Concialdi was an engineer as well and convinced Bisi to convert his CR-X from injection to

800-525-7422

carburetion to get more airflow and a finer mist of fuel in the engine. When Bisi completed the conversion, he saw a 12 percent increase in power, he never looked back. The reason Bisi is so successful and accomplished in building and racing is because he views engines differently than everyone else. He views engines as energy converters. “When I talk about energy converters, it’s simply chemical to heat to mechanical energy converters,” Bisi explains. “So, if we can harness the chemicals used – of course fuel and air – and then harness the heat of combustion properly, of which we lose over 40 percent to the cooling system and the atmo-

sphere, we could harness that better in the engine to do work on pistons, which translates to mechanical energy through the crank. We can make a lot of power.” The other unique view on engines that Bisi has is that he views all engines, whether Honda or Porsche, as the same. He isn’t daunted by any job. “It takes the same effort, whether I’m building a Porsche 911 or a Honda Fit,” Ezerioha admits. “It’s the same materials in terms of pistons. I may have to buy two more – okay, big deal. It’s the same protocol in terms of engine management solutions. It’s the same in terms of almost anything you develop. In terms of tuning, it will take me two to

three hours to tune a Civic. It will take me two to three hours to tune a 911.” This was all learned at Brotherhood Raceway on Terminal Island in Long Beach, where Bisi sharpened his skills in research and development for modifications on his car. Knowing nothing about road racing, other than what he saw on TV, and having no friends with connections there, Bisi moved to the drag strip. “I was there every weekend,” recalls Bisi. “I was there testing and trying things and that’s pretty much where I honed my teeth in drag racing. It was the only track I knew about. It was something that was very amazing for me. It was a precursor to Bisimoto Engineering.” Brotherhood Raceway didn’t last long, unfortunately, and Bisi found himself going to another track in Carlsbad where he started to see the fruits of his labor. He started raising a lot of eyebrows because of how fast he was going. People wanted in on it. “I went to the track and I got faster each week and people would come up and say: ‘Hey, how are you this fast; what did you do?” And I said, ‘Oh, I did this to my car.’ ‘Oh, could you do it for me?’ “Sure.” Before he knew it, Bisi had graduated university with a degree in chemical engineering. From there, he got into pharmaceutical research and made quite a bit of money there, as well as making money by selling his creations at the track. In the time after Bisi graduated, B-series swaps became a huge way of making power out of a smaller chassis that was originally armed with a single-cam engine. After being called out by teams he had tuned himself, Bisi grew tired of the big-headedness and decided it was time to draw up a new powerplant. He stumbled across his new engine in the junkyard one day. “I see this engine at the wrecking yard and it looks like my 66

PASMAG

D-series, but way bigger,” he remembers. “Here I have a D-series looking engine with huge ports, better ports than I’ve ever seen on anything. “I took note of the engine code: F22A,” recalls Bisi. “I went back home that evening and I started designing. It’s pretty much exactly what I did on my D-series: de-stroking, crazy head porting, aggressive cam design. Everything larger; header design, length wise, everything perfect.” Getting that perfect F22A into his CR-X was going to be a challenge. He had just shelled out $1,700 on a Mugen final drive and didn’t want to see his investment go to waste. He needed a way to match an F-series engine to a D-series transmission. This is where one of "When he took Bisi’s most revolutionary his newly inventions came to light: plate. transplanted the“Iadapter submitted a design CR-X to the track, to Arias and had them he ran a 10.23 on cut me my first adapter plate, with dowels on both his very first run." sides,” he explains. “One side was like an F/H motor and the other side was like a D-series transmission. It started up beautifully, so I didn’t have to do anything crazy, but make one driver side mount. It was very simple; I didn’t have to do anything crazy with the ignition system or fuel system because it was all carbureted.” Up to that point, Bisi had been running 10.8 second runs at the strip. When he took his newly transplanted CR-X to the track, he ran a 10.23 on his very first run. This same setup would form the basis of his 2006 IDRC Honda Insight drag build. Bisi then added adapter plates to the products he sold. In 2006, he left his pharmaceutical job to dedicate his passion to his livelihood and opened to doors to his shop, Bisimoto Engineering. Through this, he could officially sell parts to enthusiasts, instead of at the track. Since then, he has outgrown two locations,

TUNING ESSENTIALS // 2014 ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE GUIDE

and says that Bisimoto is outgrowing their third location now as well. The biggest problem that came with opening his own shop and offering parts globally was the knock-offs that came from his popular products. “I have a very unique exhaust header design,” says Bisi. “It’s patented, but it’s also my most knocked-off product. I do go after companies, but they always go away and come back with a different name.” “There are some companies who’ve just made their name by knocking off other people,” Bisi continues. “What that has done is pushed people like us away from the scene.” Bisi has found business more lucrative among some of his higher-end market clients, specifically Porsche owners. Porsche owners wouldn’t even think of using or supporting a knock-off part. Sadly, this is being seen with other pioneers of the scene. “You see people like Kenny Tran moving away from Hondas and getting into Skylines,” explains Ezerioha. “You see the same thing with all of us who pioneered things or who are very creative. We are leaving the market and going to higher-end markets because of certain people who are out there to destroy us by copying and knocking off.” With that said, it’s no surprise that his first piece of advice to people just entering the scene is to not take shortcuts with your car and use quality parts and products. “In the long run, it will be cheaper for you, seriously,” advises Bisi. “There’s this huge exodus with the younger crowd. The younger performance crowd leaves high performance, reliable products to go to something that is cheap to get instant gratification.” The second piece has to do with misinformation on the Internet and from your peers. Make sure you get your information from credible sources. “Peer support is fine and dandy, but when you are building a project car that you want to

Especially those who don’t even have cars or have never built anything in their lives.” What about if you want to get a bit more power out of your engine and you don’t want to spend a load of cash? What are some cost-effective ways of squeezing out some more juice? Bisi’s answer may shock you. “Believe it or not, the most cost effective addition I’ve seen in terms of performance is simple motor oil,” laughs Ezerioha. “There’s a lot of power in oil, it’s frightening. Some people see it as a commodity, but it is not. Aerospace companies have known this Get 30%, 60%, or even up to for years and it’s gradually trickling into the motorsports arena.” 100% more light on the road with Philips “I use Purol as an oil, which comes from upgrade headlights. And, dramatically improve the aerospace industry, and I see significant your driving visibility in tough, wet conditions gains in power,” says Bisi. with the Philips Windshield Treatment Kit. Bisi parks two Porsches in his driveway: a Cayenne Turbo for when he has to pick Get more light on the road and clearer up supplies, and a 1989 911. So, when we vision with Philips upgrade headlights asked him what his dream car would be, and Philips Windshield Treatment Kit. and if he’d modify it right away, his answers weren’t surprising. Does that mean that Bisi will go all-in on hybrid technologies in 2015? Not at all. t’s on the forums, it’s on the threads, it’s everywhere. There’s someone whining that they bolted on some parts and they’re not seeing the power gains. In all likelihood, it could be the eBay knock-off bits they bought for ‘Mad gains, bro!’ But assuming they went the proper route and got themselves some decent equipment, it’s a case of lost potential. An engine works by sucking in air and fuel, compressing that within the cylinder, detonating it with a spark and then blowing it all out the back. Suck, squish, bang and blow. When a car comes from the factory, it is equipped with an engine control unit (ECU), which is programmed to feed the engine the proper air-fuel ratio (AFR) and ignition timing to burn all of the injected fuel and detonate without knocking the engine. A knock is a mistimed detonation in the engine that can do some serious internal damage. Bent rods equal no fun. The always-tried-and-sometimes-true advice of I/H/E (intake, header, exhaust) in the unofficial hit children’s classic Everybody Tunes, is the basis that almost everyone follows when starting out. In order for the engine to function better, it needs to breathe better. However, the factory ECU has no idea that it suddenly has some shiny, new upgraded lungs in the bay. This is where ECU tuning comes in handy. Let’s go over what you’ll need.

Piggyback Strapping your car onto another, more powerful car is called piggybacking. Just kidding. A piggyback is a smaller computer that attaches to the factory ECU like a bad influence. OEM management will want to go about its business as usual, but the piggyback will be whispering, “What are you doing, man? That’s not how you go fast. C’mon, all the cool kids are doing it. Let me show you.” Adam Peeling, tech head at Haltech USA, laid it out it more eloquently. “You can have a piggyback ECU, which is another computer that attaches onto your factory computer and modifies signals going into it to fool it into adjusting the tune to how you would like it,” Peeling says. When using a piggyback system, because it is older tech, there are limitations compared to other systems. Only running ignition and fuel control can be run with a piggyback. Colin Green, the head wrench at Teknotik, uses the system himself, but says there isn’t enough room to grow if you’re tackling a more aggressive build. “They have piggyback systems for ignition control and fuel control, so you

can tweak a little bit,” says Green. “But you can’t go too far and run 2,000 cc injectors because that’s too far out of the norm for that computer to see.” Piggybacks are not only the best mode of drunken transportation; they’re the most cost effective choice for your mild build to find a bit more power. Flash & Chip A flashed ECU is a step up from the piggyback. Chipping involves taking an OEM ECU and modifying it with chips, or replacing the board inside it. Flashing takes a flashed device and uses it to feed files directly into the factory engine management via the OBD II port, replacing its factory settings. In both instances, the ECU will be modified to hold the parameters of your choosing, while not causing the check engine light to come on in the dash. It’s almost like the memory eraser from Men in Black, but instead of forgetting two mysterious men in suits, it forgets what being slow was. Green lists the benefits. “Most of the flash systems are going to work with the OBD II ports, so

you can still pass an emissions test because it uses the stock ECU,” says Green. “[A flashed ECU] can still run other parts of the car and still works with traction control and ABS.” For the tuner on the ramen noodle diet, there is a more cost effective branch of this type of ECU tuning. There are open source options, which can be used to flash the stock computer, as well as setting the AFR and ignition timing to your exact specifications. Remember, if you choose this route, it’s your fault when your engine blows up and, like Peeling says, you’re still a little limited in terms of capability. “They definitely have their place in the market, especially for people who are on a budget and don’t have the money to step up to the standalone systems,” says Peeling. “At the same time, there is a point at which we recommend people moving from that into a standalone. There are so many benefits and features that you get from a standalone that OEM ECUs can’t offer because they just weren’t designed to do what people are trying to do with them.”

ENGINE TUNING 101

Haltech Platinum Pro Plug-In ECU This is Haltech’s standalone offering, which is completely plug-n-play. It uses the car’s OEM sensors, comes with software, supports real-time programming that allows for adjustments on the fly, and can support up to 22 psi of boost. It also features USB and CAN communication ports and onboard data logging. If you’re in the market for a standalone and Haltech supports your vehicle, give this a look.

Flashing and chipping are the middle ground when it comes to ECU tuning. It’s the most accessible due to the open source option, and opens the doors to a more custom tune that still keeps your car happy by not tripping any check engine lights. Flash and chip also sounds like fish and chips and now you’re going to want some. You’re welcome. Standalone A standalone really does stand alone in a class of its own. This is a system that fully replaces an OEM ECU. GM knock sensor in a Toyota? Sure thing. Program it into the standalone and go to work. Whatever sensor you need or parameter you’re after, chances are that a standalone system can handle it. As it’s the most custom option, naturally, it’s the most expensive. Peeling says he is in favor of standalone systems, and justifies the price because of all of the benefits they bring. “For the end user, it’s more of a cost versus benefit,” says Peeling. “You can spend $600 on a re-flash program and get half the stuff that you need and that gets you by for a while, until you have to go and re-spend the money — $1,000 or $1,200 on a standalone — to get everything you needed in the first place.” Other little bonuses that standalones offer include flex fuel options and data logging. No more reprogramming with every E85 fill up and no more flying laptops while you’re trying to keep a handle on your AFR and ignition readings. Haltech ECUs also offer engine protection that shuts things down when something fails or goes outside of operating range. Bonuses, options, completely custom tuning and a big price tag. Is the cost worth it? Well, if you’ve already poured $12,000 into your engine bay, an extra $1,000 investment to protect your investment is probably worth it, moneybags.

Maps & Dynos Tuning is kind of like being an adventurer. Without maps, you’re not going to get very far. On one hand there’s a pile of gold, but getting your engine to run harder, better, faster and stronger than before is kind of like opening a sarcophagus full of riches. To find your way to the golden-tuned ECU, you’re going to need two maps: an AFR map and an ignition map. How do you obtain such relics? On a dynamometer (or dyno, as the cool kids say). An OEM ECU looks for coordinates on a map for correct air and fuel amounts before injecting them and making them go boom with a spark. By remapping these coordinates on the dyno, you are able to adjust AFR and ignition timing. How do you know what the ideal AFRs are? The stoichiometric AFR is 14.7:1. This is the golden range for naturally-aspirated engines. Boosted engines run a little richer at 12:1 to prevent knocking, which we’ve established are no fun. When you feel ready to hit the dyno, heed some advice from the master himself, Colin

Green. He was actually raised on a dyno (I don’t know if this is true, but I wouldn’t doubt it). “If you’re going to spend the money to tune, you’ll usually spend between $500 to $800 just to get on the dyno for four or five hours to tune,” says Green. “You really want to make sure the car is running properly. Any problems you’ve had before, get that all fixed and sorted out because you don’t want to be spending $200 an hour on the dyno and you have problems and you’re trying to fix stuff, because that’s just going to cost you more.” Make sure any mechanical issues are taken care of, coolant is bled and all leaks are sealed tight. A base map is also required, as a blank ECU isn’t going to have much to read on it. If you’re looking to maximize your bolt-ons, or looking to take your car to the next level, tuning is the answer. Weigh your options, do your research, feel how light your wallet is and hit the dyno. And no, Mr. eBay, you’re not going to get power by tuning your “electric supercharger.” C’mon, man.

Get more power throughout the entire powerband. The Vortech supercharging system will rocket your 5.0L to 605 horsepower at only 8 psi of safe, efficient intercooled boost. Complete systems are 50-state emissions legal and include everything you’ll need to take your Coyote-powered Mustang to the next level. Available in satin, polished and stealth black finishes, with many other options and accessories to choose from - all the way up to the 1,200+ horsepower V-7 YSi tuner Kits. System includes V-3 Si supercharger and is air-to-air intercooled. Tuner kits start at $4,963.99. Complete systems start at $6,010.99.

The new DW300 pump flows 26% more at its peak and 20% more on average across all pressures. Increases in flow were specifically engineered for high pressures (60 to 90 psi), where forced induction applications need it most. Fuel flow has been limited at low pressures (30 to 50 psi) to minimize heat generation in return fuel systems. This dual-zone approach results in a flatter flow curve, which maximizes both performance and reliability for supercharged or turbocharged applications. E85-compatible and includes a three-year warranty.

Every material has been carefully chosen for the MX72 in order to produce minimal noise and dust while producing high friction at lower temperatures. The MX72 improves upon the ever-popular CC-X compound. Braking stability is improved at higher temperatures and yet, the MX72 actually decreases rotor wear. The MX72 is the ultimate, dual-purpose, street/light track compound.

Using several thousand tons of pressurized forging, the Racing Mono-6 has been created. As the flagship mono-bloc caliper, Endless has produced this caliper for extremely high rigidity and lightness standards. The body is made using the highest production techniques and only the strongest aluminum, offering the highest possible performance.

EBC’s USR rotors feature a narrow profile slot pattern which helps to cool and de-gas brake pads at speed, ultimately detering brake fade. Slots help to promote even pad and rotor wear, while the rotors will not develop uneven grooves and never have to be resurfaced. The black geomet and phosphate coasting helps protect against corrosion. Sold in pairs.
