Dear Friends,

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PAN AMERICAN SPORTS ORGANIZATION

On behalf of the Pan American Sports Organization and the National Olympic Committees of its 41 members, I bid you a most cordial welcome to the 17th Pan American Games – “TORONTO 2015”. We are nearing the start of another great celebration of American sport and youth. Over the past 4 years, great efforts have been made to ensure that our athletes are prepared to achieve their great sports dreams in Toronto. The time has come to demonstrate their skills and talents in the area of competition of every discipline represented. The Toronto 2015 Organizing Committee, the Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian and host city authorities have worked hard to ensure that all participants are able to fulfil their responsibilities during the Games. To everyone’s satisfaction, Toronto is ready to welcome America’s great Olympic Sports Family. The 17th Pan American Games will be a great meeting of sport and our continent’s youth. It will be our celebration, where every competitor will fight to attain the highest positions. Winning is very important. It is what our athletes have so assiduously prepared for. The people of every PASO member country will closely watch the actions of their athletes, in whom they see a genuine expression of national identity and pride. But, even more important than winning is showing at all times during the Games feelings and respect for fair play, demonstrating the solidarity, friendship and peace that sport promotes. We are sure that new and wonderful pages of the purest values that characterize our continent’s young people and athletes will be written in Toronto. We should feel proud to be part of this magnificent family and of the long and rich history of Pan American Olympic sport, written by the efforts of extraordinary athletes over more than 70 years. It is up to this new generation of sportsmen and women to write their own pages of glory. We have no doubt that they will do so. On behalf of you all, I congratulate the people of Canada, and especially of Toronto, and salute the thousands of volunteers who have decided to add their grain of sand to this great work and those who have made it possible for us to be here to celebrate these excellent Pan American Games together. Welcome! Happiness and success! Sincerely,

Dear Paralympic friends,

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAS PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE

On behalf of the Americas Paralympic Committee (APC), it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the biggest ever Parapan American Games. These are the fifth edition of the Parapan Am Games since their inception in Mexico City in 1999 and I am confident that they will be the best yet, leaving an unforgettable and sustainable legacy for this great city. With all 15 sports for the first time acting as qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, I am certain that the performances of para-athletes will not just inspire and excite those in Toronto but millions across the Americas. The build-up to these Games has been excellent. The TO2015 Organising Committee are the best prepared yet and have done a fantastic job in creating some superb theatres of sport and in generating public awareness. With Latin America’s first Paralympic Games on the horizon, Toronto 2015 marks the start of a hugely important period which could act as a turning point for the whole Americas Paralympic Movement. These Games, together with a number of other vitally important sporting events over the coming years on this continent, will help raise awareness of para-sport and its athletes to new levels, acting a catalyst for a more equitable and inclusive society for all. Finally I would like to thank the TO2015 Organising Committee, the many governmental authorities, the Canadian Paralympic Committee and all those involved in organising this event for their warm welcome and hospitality. Enjoy the Games!

THE IMPACT OF THE TORONTO 2015

PAN AM/PARAPAN AM GAMES ON A SPORTING NATION By Scott Russell, CBC Sports

Now that the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games have officially arrived, it’s time to fully appreciate this watershed Canadian sporting spectacle. With a total of 7,600 athletes from 41 countries and territories from the Americas competing in 51 sports at more than 30 venues in 16 southern Ontario municipalities, the TORONTO 2015 Games constitute the largest international multi-sport gathering ever held in Canada. As a measuring stick, these Games have an infrastructure budget of $618 million and contribute 10 brand-new state-of-theart venues to Canada’s sporting landscape while substantially upgrading 15 others. They are roughly twice the size of the Olympic Winter Games, which caused such a stir in Vancouver in 2010. There is a state-of-the-art Aquatics Centre and Field House in Scarborough. In Milton, to the west of Toronto, a new cycling Velodrome is the only one of its kind in the country. “To be in this place with this track and the home Games means we are all fired up,” says track cyclist Laura Brown. It’s a sentiment shared by every Canadian summer sport athlete who marvels at the sparkling new venues built for the Games.

“It’s what drives me right now,” says Bo Hedges, a stalwart of the Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team. “To get up every day and get to the Academy and ensure that we represent our country well.” The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will herald better recreational resources, improve municipal infrastructure and pump money into the economy of Canada’s largest urban community. But these are merely facts and figures and tend to distract from the overriding impact that TORONTO 2015 will have on the future of Canada as a sporting nation. It has been a generation since Canadian summer sport athletes have had the opportunity to compete on home soil before supportive crowds at an event of this magnitude. In addition, nearly 40 years have elapsed since the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and in the interim, Canadian fans have too rarely been exposed to this kind of intense, international competition on anything other than ski slopes and skating rinks. “Multi-sport Games can introduce different sports to a broader audience,” says Curt Harnett, an Olympic cycling medallist who is Team Canada’s chef de mission for the

Trampoline star Rosie MacLennan of King City, ON, is Canada’s only gold medallist from the London 2012 Olympic Games. While she has been rightfully celebrated for her massive achievement, she believes the appreciation of what she does will be magnified in an arena in her own backyard. “I’m excited to share my passion for the sport with those who come to watch,” MacLennan stresses. “To have them see first-hand how high we jump, how fast we flip and how exciting our sport can be.”

TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games. “As a result, someone may witness an unexpected, and thus, more long-lasting connection to the moment, which can be more dramatic, more emotional and more profound because the viewer isn’t blinded with assumption.” A Gemini Award-winning broadcaster and acclaimed author, Scott Russell brings vast experience, passion and knowledge to his role as host of CBC’s primetime and late night coverage of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. His unparalleled enthussiasm for amateur sport shines through in every aspect of his work for the network. A CBC Sports veteran of more than 25 years, Russell has covered 11 Olympic Games, six Commonwealth Games, and several FIFA World Cups. In addition, Russell was a host and rinkside reporter for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada for 14 years. Outside of his hosting duties, Russell authors the insightful Field of Play blog at cbcsports.ca where he discusses the world of sport from all angles.

30

The central characters in the developing story agree with Harnett’s assessment of what’s in store this coming summer. The Canadian athletes unanimously support the notion that playing at home at an event this big for the first time in their competitive lives will substantially improve their performances. “We spend the majority of our careers travelling to foreign countries, and many of our greatest moments are in front of people cheering for other athletes,” says hurdler Phylicia George of Markham, ON. “The thought of having the chance to create memories in front of a home crowd that is fully supporting you is exhilarating. Ever since I competed at the Olympic Games and I heard the crowd cheer for the British athletes, I’ve wanted to feel that excitement of hearing the crowd’s eruption once my name was said. The Pan Am Games will finally provide me with that opportunity.”

World Championship swimming medallist and Torontonian Martha McCabe points out another culminating advantage of a home Games. “Representing Canada in our hometown will be amazing because we will get to share the experience with everyone who has helped us get to where we are in sport,” McCabe says. “We will be able to share the moment and experience it together.” “I think there is an inspirational effect,” George concludes. “Sometimes actually seeing someone from your city compete at a high level could be all you need to truly believe you can do it. Seeing a fellow Canadian being successful helps to make that level of achievement more of a reality.” The TORONTO 2015 Games have the opportunity to be much more than a collection of facts and figures and the resulting economic spinoff. This spectacle has the very real chance to deliver a connection to, an appreciation for and a shared celebration of an entire generation of Canadian sporting ambition and excellence. And at long last it will do it on fields of play close to home.

July and August. The focus: shining a spotlight on contemporary art. “Most countries want to be seen as they are now, not as they were,” says Don Shipley, creative director, arts and culture, festivals, TO2015. “And we wanted to celebrate the rich tapestry of all the Americas.”

A 35-DAY ARTS AND CULTURE FESTIVAL By Maryam Siddiqi

Toronto will certainly be a haven for sports fans during the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, but the city will also be home to a nonstop celebration of arts and culture thanks to PANAMANIA, presented by CIBC, the 35-day showcase of cultural excellence from across the Americas. Wende Cartwright, a member of TO2015’s Arts and Culture Advisory Council, says that culture is critical to a successful international multi-sport event. “It becomes almost bigger than the Games. It’s the “glue” that connects diverse audiences and builds international partnerships,” she says. “Sport is all about excellence and competition, and culture is about our shared humanity.” PANAMANIA is the culmination of three years of programming — a way to get the city primed and ready for the innovative and interactive projects that will be on display across Toronto in

Leading up to the Games, the city hosted the musical installation Play Me, I’m Yours. Fortyone pianos painted by 41 artists to represent the 41 nations participating in the Games were placed around the city with one purpose: to get Torontonians tickling the ivories. It lead to impromptu concerts, outdoor piano playing, and even a wedding dance in The Distillery District. Fresh Eyes, curated by Devon Ostrom, was another project that offered Torontonians and visitors to the city a taste of what is to come. At Toronto City Hall, to celebrate new Canadians, large transparent portraits were hung in the windows of city councillors’ offices — a way for them to see things through the eyes of someone new to the city, and for those outside the building, a view of the diverse people who make Toronto the thriving city that it is. “It was a way to show how important newcomers are to Canada,” Ostrom explains. During the Games, festivities can be seen at theatres and performance halls, and unorthodox venues, too, including Sugar Beach (Watercolour) and the porches of residential homes on a street in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood (The Postman). There will also be three locations hosting free and ticketed events throughout the festival — PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square, CIBC Pan Am Park and PANAMANIA Live @ The Distillery District. “There’ll be 300 bands from all over the Americas performing in these three sites,” says Shipley.

by artists across the Americas has been reprinted on sails, which will be used in a flotilla during the opening and closing of the sailing competitions.

Think your calendar’s full already? You’ll want to save room for the 28 original commissions — “all having their world premieres here,” Shipley says — that have been created especially for PANAMANIA. Shipley highlights three that demonstrate the diversity of not only what will be presented but in the artist community itself. Water’s Edge, a photography exhibit at Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport, will bring together six celebrated photographers from across the Americas, including Canada’s Edward Burtynsky and Brazil’s Sebastião Salgado, to explore our relationship with water. A salute to Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples, a sculpture of long distance runner Tom Longboat by David M. General titled Challenge and Triumph will be unveiled at Ontario’s Celebration Zone. Longboat raced in the 1907 Boston Marathon and stunned the crowd when he finished five minutes faster than the previous record. And, as mentioned, you’ll want to head down to Sugar Beach to catch Watercolour. Curated by the Textile Museum of Canada, this colourful piece will be moving — literally. Though Shipley is reluctant to pick a favourite piece, he admits that he’s looking forward to seeing quite a few of the works and says the following are not to be missed: 887, a theatre production by Robert Lepage about memory and technology; Deborah Colker’s MIX, which will take the audience through the dancehalls of Rio as performers blend ballet, modern dance and circus inspiration; and La Imaginación del Futuro (Imagination of the Future), a darkly humourous play about Chile’s recent political history. The impact of PANAMANIA will live on in the city after the Games have closed thanks to initiatives including the Pan Am song, the result of a week-long collaboration of songwriters and composers from across Canada through the Songwriters Association of Canada. Ostrom has a hand in this project as well, and says that it celebrates three of the city’s biggest strengths: nature, diversity, and arts and culture. “It’s exciting to understand that there’s a constant flow of vibrant things to see during the Games,” says Cartwright. “There is something for everyone to connect to.” Her advice to make the most of the celebration: “Start at Nathan Phillips Square and go from there.”

TO2015

Connecting Communities Through Sport and Culture While the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games have renewed Ontario’s interest in high-level amateur sports, the Games’ impact goes far beyond the field of play. Culture and celebration have been central to the Games experience since Toronto won the bid, and TO2015 has worked hard to share the excitement with all of Ontario. One way this spirit of celebration was brought to communities in Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe region was through the TO2015 IGNITE program. The program, which embraced TO2015’s mandate to bring the Games to communities and communities to the Games, launched in 2013. IGNITE’s goal is to not only connect with communities across the Games footprint, but also with all of Ontario. Through IGNITE, communities were invited to create their own special Games-themed event or initiative that would inspire diverse communities to get excited for the Games’ arrival through an association with the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Modelled after London 2012’s Inspire program, IGNITE was the first program of its kind for the Pan Am Games. Its debut was warmly welcomed and by the time IGNITE is completed, more than 700 community initiatives will have joined the IGNITE program, far more than the TO2015 Community Outreach team’s goal of 500. From local soccer clubs to community arts

groups, organizations across the Host Region presented initiatives to get their communities excited for the TORONTO 2015 Games. The TO2015 Community Outreach team was proud to highlight the diversity of the groups who joined the IGNITE program. Community organizations, as diverse as the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild, Beyond Us, Stratford Summer Music Festival and the Canadian Mental Health Association, organized events that highlighted the culture and diversity of the Games. Among the many exciting initiatives, the Forty-One Neighbours project stands out. The project, which produced a book written by 53 students from the Esplanade neighbourhood in Toronto, is a portrait book that features 41 people — each person currently living in one of the countries and territories participating in the TORONTO 2015 Games and who has a personal link to the Esplanade neighbourhood. Beyond connecting the Games to the community, the IGNITE program has had a happy by-product. Through their IGNITE partner workshops, the program acted as a community connector. For example, IGNITE connected the Canada Running Series Foundation to the Canadian Ecuadorian Association to help the group set up their first ever 10-kilometre run, which they turned into an IGNITE initiative. It’s this type of grassroots community engagement that the TO2015 Community Outreach team hopes will be a legacy of the Games.

TORONTO: THE CITY THAT CHEERS FOR THE WORLD! Learn which Toronto neighbourhoods will be cheering for which teams By Maryam Siddiqi

Thanks to home-field advantage, there’s no question Team Canada will be supported by fans waving the maple leaf across the city and country during the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. But because Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world and home to a population with incredibly rich roots in other communities and countries of the Americas, this means sports fans will often be cheering for more than one team. Before you invest in face paint and flags, and practise chants and dances, study this guide to learn who’ll be cheering for whom, and how and where you can join in. Members, supporters and friends of the LGBTQ community will want to visit PrideHouseTO, located at the 519 Church Street Community Centre, in the heart of Toronto’s gay village. Rainbow flags will be plentiful — even painted across intersections along Church Street — and PridehouseTO will host art and educational installations as well as a lounge where sports fans can watch the Games. On weekends in July at Barbara Hall Park, you can expect a non-stop celebration of the Games and community. Think music, revelry and a love of sport and inclusion. Music and revelry will also dominate how Caribbean communities toast their teams throughout the Games. “There’s both regional solidarity and rivalries among the countries,”

Home Town Cheering EN v2.indd 2

says Sabrina Razack, manager, community outreach, community and cultural affairs, TO2015. “Expect to see big crowds out for track and field events and football (soccer) — the two sports the region is most passionate about,” Razack says. But you’ll also find Trinidad and Tobago supporters cheering on athletes in field hockey, cycling and swimming. Aquatics will attract fans from Jamaica and Barbados. And if Grenada’s Kirani James is competing on the track — he is the reigning world champion in the 400 metres and the island nation’s first Olympic medallist — there will definitely be roars from the crowd. “Anytime any of the small islands wins, the fans go crazy,” says Razack. She likes to root for the small islands herself, “As long as they are not playing Trinidad and Tobago!” she says, explaining that it’s where her parents are from. Caribbean communities are spread throughout Toronto — from Rexdale in the west end to Scarborough in the east, and Oakwood and Eglinton in between. Join fans at bars, where supporters will be watching the Games and enjoying drinks and music. The atmosphere will be alive with whistles, bells and drums. Another essential: the cowbell, or “iron,” as Razack says, which is what they call the bell in Trinidad and Tobago and the smaller islands.

Games. And “Cuba has an exceptional diving program,” says Martinez.

Francophones will be centre stage at the Games Louise Gauvreau, Senior Manager, Official Languages, pointed to several aquatics athletes from Quebec, including para athletes Benoît Huot and rising star Aurélie Rivarel who will make Canada proud. Water-polo, boxing, cycling and fencing promise great francophone performances. Official broadcast host RadioCanada will cover the Opening Ceremonies with Cirque du Soleil. Tumbles and twists will continue with Théâtre Leo and Théâtre Alfonse as part of PANAMANIA, presented by CIBC. Other ‘must sees’ include Robert Lepage’s World Premiere 887, Ontario’s Damien Robitaille, and Haitian ’chanteuse’ Emeline Michel. The Maritimes will shine in performances by Lisa Leblanc’s, Radio Radio and the Hay Babies. Manitoba’s Marijosee will also unleash her powerful voice. The Francophonie will be in full swing across the Games. As part of the Celebrations Zones, the francophone community will also be gathering at Franco-Fête located at Toronto’s Dundas Square.

48

If you’re taking in a football match, expect to hear a couple of anthems, though not of the official variety. Jamaican fans love to prep for a game while listening to Reggae Boyz, while Trinidad and Tobago supporters prefer Soca Warriors. The Caribbean isn’t the only region invested in what’s happening on the pitch. For the Latin American community, soccer is hugely important as is baseball. “You can definitely bet on seeing crowds out for these two sports,” says Fulvio Martinez, manager, community outreach and media relations, TO2015. During the Games, the city will host large delegations from Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, but there will be athletes here from across Latin America, from Colombia to Cuba, and Nicaragua to Puerto Rico. Incidentally, Martinez says that, along with Team Canada, he will be proudly supporting his Nicaraguan roots, particularly during baseball games. But fans can expect to see Latin American athletes competing in sports beyond baseball and soccer. Colombia has a very strong cycling team, while Mexico is home to some of the best racquetball players in the world. Paola Longoria, reigning world champion in the sport, will be an honorary torchbearer for these

Brazil is strong in most sports as it gets ready to host the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but look out for Brazilian athletes, especially in aquatics and gymnastics. Martinez also recommends keeping a watchful eye on basketball games where a number of NBA players are expected to suit up for their countries. “They will be highly contested,” he says. Competing alongside Canada and the United States will be teams from Argentina, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Brazil. The Latin American community is spread out across the Greater Toronto Area, but St. Clair West, between Bathurst and Earlscourt, is the hub for restaurants and bars in which to enjoy the festivities. If the plan is to enjoy a meal before or after a match, head to the Annex or St. Lawrence Market neighbourhoods for Latin flavours from Nicaragua to El Salvador. And if you plan to root for a Latin American country, Martinez has some advice. “Head to Plaza Latina at Finch and Weston to get a flag. You’re going to see a lot of colour in the stands. Everyone will show up with flags,” he says. Or better yet, paint your face with a flag from the country of your roots on one side and a Canadian flag on the other. The one lesson from all of these communities: Whoever you decide to cheer for, do so loud and proud and pack some ear plugs just in case.

VENUES A lasting sport legacy built across the Greater Golden Horseshoe region By Anna Rutledge

Venues Opening EN.indd 1

2015-06-05 6:17 PM

Amid the excitement of hosting the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the Greater Golden Horseshoe region has one further cause for celebration. One of the many lasting benefits of the Games is the new facilities that are designed to serve their communities and Canadian high-performance athletes for decades to come. With an infrastructure budget of $618 million, funded by the Government of Canada, as well as municipal and university partners, the Organizing Committee has built an impressive 10 all-new world-class facilities, as well as substantially upgraded 15 existing venues, from Minden to Welland and Caledon to Oshawa. The facilities will be used for a wide range of sports, from swimming, shooting and equestrian to canoe/kayak – sprint and BMX. Some of the venues represent important firsts not only for Ontario but for the advancement of Canadian sport in general.

The Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome is a three-story, fully accessible $56-million venue, and is the sole facility of its kind in Canada.

The Organizing Committee has built an impressive 10 all-new worldclass facilities, as well as substantially upgraded 15 existing venues

For example, the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome is the sole facility of its kind in Canada and only the second that meets top international standards in the USA and Canada, and was designed to meet the stringent requirements set by the International Cycling Union (UCI). It has a 250-metre cycling track, with two 42-degree banks, made of unvarnished Siberian spruce, which took a team of 50 carpenters more than a month to nail in by hand. The Velodrome also operates year-round, enabling Canadian cyclists to train on home soil for the first time in decades. As such, it is the new home of Cycling Canada, the Ontario Cycling Association and the Milton Cycling Academy. The oval-shaped, three-story, fully accessible Velodrome also includes three multi-use courts located on the infield and a walking track located on the spectator level, which offers a bird’s-eye view of the Niagara Escarpment. At the time of its official opening in January 2015, when it hosted the Canadian Track Cycling Championships and the inaugural Milton International Challenge, Saäd Rafi, chief executive

officer, TO2015, said he was confident the Velodrome would have a lasting impact for the people of Milton. “People in Milton have watched this unique structure going up in their community and now they’re coming inside to experience this beautiful building,” Rafi said. “Not only will spectators watch top athletes racing, but they’ll also see a truly impressive community space that they’ll be using for years to come.” In Toronto, track and field athletes, as well as students at York University, have a brand-new stadium where they can train and compete. The CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium boasts a 400-metre track designed for certification by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)

as a Class 1 track, as well as an infield for throwing and jumping disciplines, such as javelin and long jump. Next door, the Toronto Track and Field Centre has also received brand-new indoor and outdoor tracks for its Games-time role as a training facility. Further north, OLG Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park has undergone upgrades and improvements for the Games. The publicly owned equestrian park, which will host dressage and jumping at Games time, is already considered a world-class facility and has previously hosted 15 World Cup qualifiers, two Olympic trials and more than 150 National Grand Prix events. prepare for the Games, the facility began improvements in 2012 and carried out the work in three phases, which allowed for minimal disruption to site operations. Among the upgrades are a new main stadium building, permanent spectator seating and an indoor competition and warm-up riding arena for winter use. Tentime Olympian and nine-time Pan Am Games medallist Ian Millar said the OLG Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park “is the best Pan Am facility I’ve ever seen and the best that’s ever been.” But the jewel in the crown of the amazing new venues created for the Games is the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House. The facility is the largest sport new-build for the Games and the largest investment ever in Canadian amateur sport history. The Aquatics Centre features two 10-lane, 50-metre pools, a 5-metre-deep diving tank with 3-metre, 5-metre, 7.5-metre and 10-metre platforms, and dryland dive training facilities. The Centre has doubled the number of Olympic-sized pools in the Greater Toronto Area and is the sole aquatics facility in the region that

“Not only will spectators watch top athletes racing, but they’ll also see a truly impressive community space that they’ll be using for years to come.” meets the latest international competition standards — including the first facility with the required warm-up pool. The Field House features flexible gymnasium space for training and competition, as well as an indoor recreational track and fitness area with cardio and weightlifting facilities. The Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario is also located here and the Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team has made it their first permanent home — an important move for a sport Canada has long dominated at the international level. These remarkable venues will provide not just an impressive home for athletes during the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, but also a lasting legacy for sport in Ontario.

CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium

Hamilton is conveniently located about an hour’s drive from both Toronto and Niagara Falls, at the western tip of Lake Ontario. The city boasts a strong arts scene, award-winning dining and a vast outdoor playground for nature enthusiasts. During Games time, Hamilton will host football (soccer) at the new CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium. The Stadium sits on a 5.45-hectare parcel in Hamilton’s Stipley neighbourhood, where the venerable Ivor Wynne Stadium formerly stood. These grounds played host to the British Empire Games in 1930 — the first time Canada staged a major international competition. The design reimagines the historic site — as a flexible “neighbourhood stadium” that can host professional and amateur sports, cultural happenings and prestigious national and international events. To connect the new stadium with the community even more, Hamilton will be hosting Hamilton Kicks it Up! a program that will feature 16 days of cultural festivities and celebrations. Festivities will take place across the city, including a Viva Pan Am Jr. Soccer Celebration.

CIBC PAN AM/ PARAPAN AM ATHLETES’ VILLAGE

From bananas to bedsheets: a look at what makes the Athletes’ Village so special By Maryam Siddiqi

Athletes coming to Toronto from across the Americas to compete in the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Gameswill experience a part of the city most Torontonians haven’t been to yet: the site of the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes’ Village. Located in the Canary District, a newly revamped neighbourhood just east of the downtown core, the Village was built on formerly unused land at the foot of the Don River and steps from Lake Ontario. The land was brought to life for these Games and will have a lasting legacy in Toronto as locals move in to claim the neighbourhood as their own after the Parapan Am Closing Ceremony. What can athletes, coaches and team officials expect from their home away from home this summer? Here’s a glimpse of this exciting new facility and area in Canada’s largest city. During the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, the Village will host more than 10,000 athletes, coaches and team officials. Joining them on-site will be hundreds of volunteers who will assist staff in making a village within a city run, from providing clean towels to ensuring there’s enough ice cream for everyone.

Aside from tree-lined pedestrian paths and views of the CN Tower and the downtown core, athletes will have access to Corktown Common, an 18-acre park that’s not only a great place to kick a soccer ball or toss a frisbee around, but to catch a comedy under the stars. The park will host a movie night during the Games as well as regular yoga sessions and musical performances from local acts — ways for athletes to relax after a tough day of training and get to know each other away from trials and competitions. Also steps from their residences: a gorgeous, new 82,000-square-foot YMCA. Open 24 hours, the facility will include a fitness centre and indoor track, as well as a yoga room, gym and two pools. The Village will also have a Polyclinic that will ensure athletes receive prompt medical attention for everything from dental issues to MRIs. And during the Parapan Am Games, a pop-up centre will service prosthetic and wheelchair repairs.

Just over 2,000 athletes can sit down at any one time to enjoy a meal TORONTO 2015

CIBC ATHLETES’ VILLAGE

Athletes will enter the Village through the Village Plaza, the site of the Team Welcome Ceremonies. Youth ambassadors will greet teams as they arrive and the teams’ home country flags will be raised and their anthems will be played. In the Village Plaza, athletes will also be able to meet with family or pamper themselves with a complimentary haircut or manicure. Or for those who want to show their Pan Am colours, the TORONTO 2015 store will carry all the must-have T-shirts, gifts and souvenirs. Also, there will be a florist, café and grocery store. But the grocery store and café will be just one small part of the food that will be offered to Village residents. Operations staff estimate that 450,000 meals will be served in the 6,500-squarefoot dining tent during the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games — an average of 21,000 meals a day. Just over 2,000 athletes can sit down at any one time to enjoy a meal in the tent, where there will be a variety of cuisines to choose from, whether it be Asian- or Italianinspired dishes. During peak times, there will be 600 catering staff on-site, and it’s expected that athletes and officials will enjoy, among other things, 90,000 bananas, 50,000 servings of steak, 10,000 litres of orange juice and 75,000 litres of ice cream. Staff can also accommodate health issues and dietary restrictions, and arrange meals for athletes who celebrate Ramadan, which falls during the first week of the Pan Am Games. And citizens of the Athletes’ Village will claim a total of 1,285 apartments, 2,685 bedrooms and 660 accessible beds spread over five residences. Rooms in these brand-new buildings will offer athletes enviable views of the Village and downtown Toronto, and accommodate four guests per suite; each suite will contain two bedrooms that sleep two, a shared bathroom and small lounge at the entrance. Decor will

The Village will also have a Polyclinic that will ensure athletes receive prompt medical attention for everything from dental issues to MRIs be bright and colourful, and original art in the rooms was created especially for the Games by students across the Toronto District School Board. And the buildings, all fully accessible, will also have a communal lounge/games room stocked with video games, and more, when athletes want a break from training and competing. The residences, which will be run like hotels, will also have a concierge who will supply guests with towels and linens, as well as restaurant recommendations and sightseeing tips. During the Games’ busiest periods, 200 housekeepers will be on-site making beds 136,000 times, stocking 1,773 washrooms with 115,000 rolls of toilet paper and emptying 212,000 garbage bags. It’s rare for a Games to have its Athletes’ Village so close to a city’s downtown core and bars, restaurants and shops, but with amenities like the ones on-site here, teams might not want to leave this oasis by the lake.

Cisco Milton Velodrome

As a trusted partner, Siemens Canada is working closely with organizers of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games to help ensure the athletes’ health and safety. Siemens is the Official Supplier of Medical Imaging and Video Security Equipment for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. On the medical side, Siemens is providing specialized, state-of-the-art ultrasound machines to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries, plus portable and fixed digital X-ray equipment. For security, the company has installed ultra-high-resolution, real-time video monitoring systems at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes’ Village, as well as at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome and CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium. In fact, Siemens has provided infrastructure technology at various TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games venues, from power transformers to fire alarm systems to building automation solutions that keep athletes and spectators comfortable.

Siemens-EN-TO2015Comm.indd 1

A true partnership Siemens’ relationship with the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games is about much more than providing sophisticated technology, as critical as that is. The experts at Siemens are focused on doing everything possible to be trusted advisors. For example, Siemens helped configure the examination rooms housing the medical equipment, trained practitioners on how to use the devices, and is providing around-the-clock technical support. Siemens also offered valuable consulting support, helping find creative solutions to meet the medical needs of athletes staying at satellite accommodation locations that are far away from the Polyclinic (main medical clinic) in the CIBC Athletes’ Village. “That consulting role is what really sets us apart,” explains Jim Graziadei, Siemens’ Senior Vice President of Healthcare. “Our sales people really are consultants. They know the business from A to Z.”

Sharing expertise It’s a similar story for security at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games, with Siemens experts making major contributions. Siemens’ security specialists are offering technical support for the video surveillance systems, including being available during the events at moment’s notice if requested. In the weeks leading up to the Pan Am Opening Ceremony, they gave insightful input on how to put all the different technological pieces together into

the most effective and efficient overall solution for the CIBC Athletes’ Village, and provided extensive training to the security staff working there. On top of that, for venues such as those in Hamilton and Milton, members of Siemens’ Building Technologies team have already been collaborating with municipal representatives to make sure their facilities can be successfully operated for many years to come. “We made it clear that we are in this for the long haul, not just for a quick installation and then moving on,” notes Stéphane Chayer, Vice President, Building Technologies at Siemens. “We’ll be available whenever they need us to ensure that the installed systems are a good investment for the future.”

Q & A WITH

CURT HARNETT

TEAM CANADA’S CHEF DE MISSION FOR THE TORONTO 2015 PAN AM GAMES Curt Harnett is Team Canada’s chef de mission for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games. He will be leading Canada’s largestever delegation to any multi-sport Games. Harnett acted as the assistant chef de mission at the Guadalajara 2011 Pan Am Games, which gave him insight into the complexities of leading a team at a multi-sport Games, and he is excited to share the excitement of these Games with Canadians.

Have you ever participated in a Pan Am Games? Yes, I was able to participate in the 1983 Games in Caracas and the 1987 Games in Indiana.

What is your favourite Pan Am memory as an athlete? I would have to say my first experience in 1983. Attending my first multi-sport Games was an eye-opening experience that helped me learn how to manage distraction at large events.

What are you most excited about with the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games? There are so many elements I’m excited for! I’m especially excited to see the long-term investment in sport these Games will produce. TO2015 is delivering long overdue infrastructure for sport in Canada that will have an impact on athletes for generations to come.

How do you feel these Games are different from past Pan Am Games? The Pan Am movement has been progressing and gaining momentum. With PASO’s decision to award Toronto the Games, we have been given the chance to take the movement to the next level. The TORONTO 2015 Games will provide fantastic exposure for the PASO movement, and Toronto has done a wonderful job creating a Games that will exceed PASO’s expectations!

What do you think Canadian athletes are most excited for at these Games? Canadian athletes are excited to have the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd. These Games will give them a great chance for exposure; the road to Rio goes through Toronto, and their performances here are going to get Canadians excited about next year’s events in Rio. Also, by showing their pride and cheering on our athletes here, Canadians will be giving them some extra fire to take with them to Rio.

Is there one event you are particularly looking forward to at these Games? There’s no bad ticket at these Games! I’m especially looking forward to the Opening Ceremony, where the huge crowd will be able to offer a warm welcome to not just Canadian athletes, but to athletes from across the Americas.

Q & A WITH

ELISABETH WALKER-YOUNG

TEAM CANADA’S CHEF DE MISSION FOR THE TORONTO 2015 PARAPAN AM GAMES Elisabeth Walker-Young is Canada’s chef de mission for the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games. She will be leading Canada’s largest ever Parapan Am team with over 350 athletes and support staff. As this is the first time the International Paralympic Committee has made all 15 sports qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, she is expecting to see the top athletes in the Americas competing. Walker-Young hopes to see Canada finish in the top three for medal count at these Games.

Have you ever participated in a Parapan Am Games? When I was competing, there were no Parapan Am Games. I’m sorry they weren’t around; they provide a huge benefit to the athletes. They provide invaluable international experience for athletes before they go to their first Paralympics.

What are you most excited about at the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games?

How do you think these Games are different from past Pan Am and Parapan Am Games? The amount of detail that has gone into the preparation for these Games is astounding! The Games are going to be top-notch, professional and athlete centred. Everything has been worked out, from which doors athletes and coaches will enter through to where the ice baths and cool-down areas will be. The level of preparation is world class.

What do you think Canadian athletes are most excited for at these Games? I think our athletes are excited to have the opportunity to compete on home soil. We don’t host many international multi-sport events, and they don’t get many opportunities to showcase how hard they work. Although having family in the audience can be an extra stressor, the athletes have been preparing and are looking forward to the opportunity.

I’m excited to see Team Canada athletes achieve their goal! I’m also excited that Canadians will have a chance to see summer Paralympic sports in action. We don’t have many opportunities to perform in front of Canadian crowds and this will allow Canadians to see the extremely high level of sport these athletes perform at.

THE THRILL OF VICTORY AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT:

RIVALRIES FOR THE AGES By Bert Archer

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat get a little more poignant when there’s a good rivalry to juice it up. And there will be plenty of that on display this summer. The Host Country has laid down the gauntlet for the USA (which is almost always the top nation in the medal standings) and for every other competing nation. Canada is hoping for

68

TORONTO 2015

its best ever finish — top two in the medal tally at the Pan Am Games and top three at the Parapan Am Games. This year marks the first appearance of women’s baseball at the Pan Am Games, and the teams to watch are the USA and Canada, ranked second and fourth in the world, respectively, two nations that are still arguing over the outcome

of a war that ended 200 years ago this year. So, the game to watch here is the final one of the preliminary round on July 24 when Canada meets the USA for the first time. Canada is bringing its top athletes in almost all sports, including swimming, and they’ll face a tough USA swim team led by one of the USA’s greatest swimmers of all time: Natalie Coughlin. On the Parapan Am side, Benoît Huot has won 19 Paralympic medals and is one of Canada’s most accomplished Paralympians ever, who hopes to add to his medal totals at a rare home Games. But he’ll have to beat one of his greatest rivals and friends, André Brasil of Brazil. Mexico and Canada have produced some of the best divers in the world, and both countries will be looking to show their talented athletes at the Games this summer. Another big 49th parallel tussle will be in wheelchair basketball. Since women began playing in the quadrennial World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in 1990, the USA and Canada have dominated the boards, with Team USA team taking it home in 1990 and

2010, and every other victory going to Canada. Canada comes into the Games as the current world champions. The Canadian men need to win gold to qualify for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. But the USA will have other ideas. Men’s field hockey is probably the longest and most closely fought of all Pan Am rivalries, with Argentina and Canada meeting each other in every gold-medal match since 1975. Argentina, whose national colours are blue and white, has won six times, Canada four. “You’re kind of taught as a young player that the blue and white stripes are bad,” Canada’s captain Scott Tupper said this spring. Canada won last time the Games were hosted in Canada, in 1999. The last time the teams met under the Pan Am banner, in Guadalajara in 2011, Argentina came out the winner. “It’s our time to get a little retribution, perhaps, bring it back the other way,” Tupper said. The stakes are high with the winner qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Men’s baseball: Top nations in the world will be battling for gold, including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, USA, and Canada, the defending Pan Am gold medallist. Men’s basketball: Puerto Rico is the defending champion but USA, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina and Canada are expected to provide stiff competition. Canada could have a roster full of NBA players and, if so, will be one of the countries that could pose an upset. Men’s football (soccer): Look out for Mexico, which won the Pan Am gold in 2011 in Guadalajara and also came out on top the last two times the Games were held in Canada. But traditional powerhouses such as Brazil and Uruguay will have something to say about the final result. Expect Brazil to play a prominent role in the women’s competition as well, having won gold in 2003 and 2007 before losing to Canada on penalty kicks in 2011. The USA and Cuba have a long history of duking it out for boxing supremacy. The USA and Brazil are the teams to watch in volleyball. Brazil won both gold medals at the last Games, but the USA is ranked number one in the world on the women’s side — just ahead of Brazil.

70

TORONTO 2015

Archery has received a lot of attention of late because of movies like The Hunger Games. Crispin Duenas of Toronto is hungry to show he’s become one of the best in the sport in his home city. But he’ll be up against two of his fiercest rivals: Brady Ellison of the USA and Juan René Serrano of Mexico. In judo, Cuba and Brazil are two of the top teams in the world, ranked fourth and 12th, respectively, in terms of world championship medals, but they are about as evenly matched as they can be on the Pan American Games field. Last time they met, in 2011, each took home six golds and three silvers, the only distinction coming in the bronze matches, where Brazil won four bronze medals to Cuba’s three. The time before, in 2007, with Brazil playing host, they tied with 13 medals each. In track and field, athletes from Jamaica are always in the running. But there will be other island athletes hoping to showcase their speed as well. Kirani James of Grenada, the Olympic champion from London, could be one of the ones to beat in the 400 metres. But not if Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic has something to say about it. Santos is the Olympic silver medallist in the event and the reigning Pan Am champion. Overall, these Games promise to feature the highest standard of athletic achievement, with not just personal glory, but national pride on the line.

The materials for the medals were supplied by Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corporation from three of its operations across the Americas: copper from its Zaldívar mine in Chile; silver from its Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic; and gold from its Hemlo mine in Ontario.

The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games competition medals, which will be awarded for gold, silver and bronze performances, tell the rich story of the “People’s Games” through a beautifully layered design that showcases innovation and inclusion.

The medals’ design incorporates the ancient technique of mokume gane, which requires a high degree of skill to fuse or “unite” different alloys into one useable material, while creating unique and artistic patterns. These different patterns are created by repeating a process of high-speed carving, deburring, forging and shaping. The Royal Canadian Mint’s innovative approach in applying mokume gane to the athletes’ medals means each medal is truly one of a kind, while stylistically reflecting the multicultural celebration of athletes and nations coming together.

COMPETITION MEDALS

There were 4,283 medals created by the Royal Canadian Mint for gold, silver and bronze performances at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

The artwork on the medals expresses the values of inclusion and diversity, and highlights the Aboriginal traditions of welcoming guests and cherishing the beauty of the natural world. The collaborative creative process included Christi Belcourt, a Métis visual artist who combined artistry and storytelling with the Royal Canadian Mint’s innovative production process. Braille is used to identify TORONTO 2015 — a reflection of TO2015’s commitment to accessibility, and this is the first time it has ever been applied on both Pan Am and Parapan Am Games medals. The three irregular shapes layered on the front of the medals represent North America, Central

“When athletes have a medal hung around their neck, it is a beginning not an end. As they go through life, people will want to see it, touch it and feel the weight of it,” said Elisabeth WalkerYoung, Team Canada’s chef de mission for the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games. “The medals that are given out at the Games will hold pride of place in homes, hearts and memories throughout the Americas for decades to come. Through the design of the medal, the unity and joy of the Games live on.” The competition medals will be an important legacy that will forever represent the story behind the TORONTO 2015 Games as well as be a valuable keepsake for the athletes.

There are undeniably a number of attractions to each multi-sport Games scenario. The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will create excitement because they promise to be a spectacle which brings together 41 countries and territories from the Americas to celebrate sport and culture. There is always something at stake in gatherings like these. The pride of nations as well as the passion of individuals will inevitably come to the fore at every stadium and arena over the course of the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games taking place across the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Thousands of riveting stories will reveal themselves as friendly struggles unfold on the many fields of play. But make no mistake: the headliners of TORONTO 2015 are the athletes, more than 7,600 of them, who will deliver outstanding performances in the heat of July and August. They are ordinary people who are capable of extraordinary things and, without question, they’ll claim centre stage as the stars of the show this summer. Here are just a few to watch at the TORONTO 2015 Games:

Athletics

Canada will send its best track and field athletes to compete at home in an event of this magnitude for the first time in more than a generation. Decathlete Damian Warner and heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton have world championship podium credentials and will lead the Canadian side. High jumper Derek Drouin, a Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic bronze medallist, is continuously raising the bar. American Ashton Eaton, the Olympic decathlon champion and arguably the greatest all-around athlete in the world, is set to test the track in Toronto. So is wheelchair racing’s Josh Cassidy of Ottawa who has been victorious at the London and Boston marathons. From the Dominican Republic, Luguelín Santos will defend his 400-metre crown won four years ago in Guadalajara. He also won the 400-metre silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Aquatics

The waters of the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House will run deep with talent. Swimming will feature double Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane of Victoria, BC, in the distance events. Natalie Coughlin of the United States will be competing in her first Pan American Games and brings a resumé that includes 12 Olympic podium finishes. At the Parapan Am Games, the legendary and prolific Benoît Huot of Montreal will lead the field, having won 19 Paralympic medals over the course of his storied career. Daniel Dias of Brazil has 17 world titles to his credit. In diving, the Canadian women, led by the Fab Four, Meaghan Benfeito, Pamela Ware, Roseline Filion and Jennifer Abel, will go head to head with strong rivals from the United States and Mexico. The Canadians have been consistently on the podium at recent Olympic Games and world championships.

Badminton

Michelle Li of Markham, ON, is set to defend her Pan American Games gold medals in both singles and doubles play. She is also the reigning Commonwealth Games singles champion and will be competing in front of her hometown fans at a brand-new facility during the Games.

76

Canoe/ Kayak – Sprint

Expect the waters to churn in Welland as some of the world’s top paddlers navigate the TORONTO 2015 Games. Four-time Olympic medallist Adam van Koeverden looks to dominate in kayaking. Meanwhile, Mark Oldershaw, of the Burloak Canoe Club in Oakville, ON, leads the way in canoeing. Oldershaw won Olympic C1 bronze in 2012.

Cycling

The brand-new Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome will heat up and Canada boasts one of the strongest female pursuit teams anywhere. The maple leaf women won bronze at the last Olympic Games and have been on the podium at the last four World Championships. Mariana Pajón of Colombia rules BMX racing. She’s the reigning Pan American Games and Olympic champion.

Equestrian

When it comes to show jumping, Canadian athletes are always ambitious. Ian Millar is a 10-time Olympian and won Pan Am gold in 1999 in Winnipeg. Eric Lamaze is the 2008 Olympic individual champion and was part of the Canadian silver-medal-winning team at the same Games. They’ll showcase the beautiful grounds at the equestrian facility in Caledon.

Team Sports

In basketball, the Canadian men’s team will feature a lineup laden with NBA talent under the direction of general manager Steve Nash and coach Jay Triano. The women were fifth at the most recent World Championships and made plenty of noise at the 2012 Olympic Games. At the Parapan Am Games, the women will come in as the world champions, while the men won the Paralympic title in London in 2012.

Gymnastics

Trampoline star and Olympic gold medallist Rosie MacLennan from King City, ON, will be attempting to repeat as Pan Am Games champion, this time at home. Onside will be teammate Karen Cockburn who has won three Olympic medals over the course of her illustrious career. In artistic gymnastics, Commonwealth Games champions Ellie Black of Halifax and Scott Morgan of North Vancouver anchor the strong Canadian side.

The Canadian men’s baseball team won Pan Am gold in Guadalajara for manager Ernie Whitt. They’ll be up against the dynastic Cubans who won the previous 10 titles and will be looking for revenge at TORONTO 2015. In field hockey, the Canadian men will undoubtedly face rival Argentina for the gold medal and the right to advance to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, rugby sevens will debut for the women with a strong Canadian team expected to challenge for gold. The Canadian men come in as defending champions. The TORONTO 2015 Games will boast the largest group of athletes in the history of the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. In a pre-Olympic year, there is plenty on the line for the vast majority of them. For others, these Games represent the pinnacle of international competition and thus the race to the podium in every sport will be full of drama and excitement.

From one great host city to another. Congratulations, Toronto, on hosting the 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games. We feel the excitement—and know that you’ll deliver the best games ever! Edmonton is also becoming a premier host city, one reason National Geographic editors recently rated Edmonton as one of the world’s top ten summer destinations for 2015. If that comes as a surprise, you owe it to yourself to explore how much Edmonton rocks.

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY The objective of this mixed-gender sport is to score the most goals by carrying, dribbling or passing the ball toward the opponent’s end. In this fast-paced game, contact between wheelchairs is allowed, and players frequently collide.

FAST FACT Canada’s wheelchair rugby team earned silver at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

FAST FACT Wheelchair rugby was invented in the late 1970s in Winnipeg and was originally known as “murderball.”

BOCCIA Boccia is a game of skill, accuracy and strategy and was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy, but now includes athletes with disabilities that affect motor skills.

WHERE? Abilities Centre

FAST FACT Played on a flat, smooth surface, the objective is to propel (throw, kick or use an assistive device) six balls as close as possible to a white target ball.

MEDAL EVENTS Mixed – Individual BC1, BC2, BC3, BC4 Mixed – Pairs BC3, BC4 Mixed – Team BC1/BC2

GOALBALL WHERE? Mississauga Sports Centre

FAST FACT Goalball was invented in 1946 as a rehabilitation sport for blind World War II veterans.

Goalball is played exclusively by athletes with visual impairments, using a ball with bells inside. Two teams of three face off on an indoor court with tactile lines and goals at either end. Because athletes must hear the ball and be able to concentrate, spectators are asked to remain silent during the game.
