For cosmetic chemists, who are constantly seeking to develop novel formulations, improve product stability, and understand ingredient interactions, AI presents a new way to augment your expertise. With the ability to analyze ingredient lists, provide starting formulas and predict potential product outcomes, AI tools are set to significantly enhance the efficiency and creativity of cosmetic science.
As of June 2024, here are some of my favorite tools at the moment.
Chatbots
A computer program designed to simulate conversations with a human.
ChatGPT 4.0 – General chatbot for numerous applications including writing, idea generation, formula creation, troubleshooting ideas and more. Having ChatGPT in the lab with you is like having a forty year veteran who has read every book on the subject of cosmetic science and isn't afraid to give you ideas.
Claude 3 – This is just like ChatGPT but it doesn't have as small a character limit. So, if you have a long PDF that you wanted to analyze or summarize, Claude can help you out. The latest version of Claude 3 Opus is considered in some ways to be superior to ChatGPT.

Google Gemini 1. Microsoft Copilot 2. Meta Llama 3.
How these chatbots work: type in a prompt and the chatbot responds to your question. It's essentially you having a conversation with the AI. The better you are at asking questions (creating prompts) the better the answers you'll get. Caution: These chatbots are like people because they are sometimes unreliable and give you false informatype in a prompt and the chatbot responds to your question. AI Image Generator
A computer program designed to create images based on text descriptions
Midjourney - create any kind of picture that you want. Just type in a description of the picture that you want and the computer will generate 4 variations for you. Continue to refine your description to get exactly what you want. This is particularly helpful for when you are looking for images to use in presentations and articles. pful for when you are looking for images to use in presentations and articles.
DALL-E 3 – created by OpenAI, (the same people who make ChatGPT).This is a powerful AI system that can generate realistic images from text descriptions. It is available through OpenAI's API or can be accessed for free through Microsoft's Bing Image Creator

How these image generators work: type in a prompt that describes the picture that you want and the AI will deliver to you several interpretations of what you asked. The more specific your description, the better the images you will receive. If you don't like what you get, you can always ask it to try again.
AI Search Engines
This is a whole new way to search the internet. While Google uses keywords to match web pages and ranks them based on popularity, AI search engine understand search queries more like a human would and providing direct, summarized answers instead of just a list of links.
They use advanced natural language processing to grasp the intent behind a question and deliver clear, concise responses right away. One of the best things is you can engage in a conversation with the AI to get refined answers.
Perplexity : Search engine where you can get the information you need by posting a question. It is driven by ChatGPT so you can get all the same things using that tool but this one is a little more refined and focused just on searching the Internet.
Bing Search: Microsoft Bing has been around for a long time and has never managed to provide any serious competition to Google. However, it has received major upgrades since the launch of Large Language Models like ChatGPT. Bing now is a fully functional AI search engine that uses large language models such as GPT-4, Vision models, and Image generation models to provide a new and improved web search answers.
AI Search Engines
Other Options:
1. 2.Komo 3.You
Google (turn on AI version)
How these image generators work: Type in a prompt in the form of a question and it searches the Internet to give you a complete answer. Unlike Google where you are provided with a list of websites to go to, these AI search engines give you the answer right away. They also give you reference links so you can see the original source of their information. Quite handy!

Cautions
Ethical and Privacy Issues: AI can inadvertently expose or misuse sensitive data. Plus, biases in AI can perpetuate societal stereotypes. Don't share secret information with the AI!
Over-reliance: Heavy dependence on AI can reduce human oversight and critical thinking, leading to potential errors. AI is not perfect. Double check its work!
Security Concerns: AI systems, like other software, can be vulnerable to attacks, especially deceptive adversarial attacks that can drastically alter outputs.
