AP Psychology

Participants will review curriculum updates, AP Audit, various syllabi for one and t wo-semester courses, sequence & pacing, textbook options, materials, and other key resources. Emphasis will be on best-practices and content areas typically more difficult for students and teachers including neurophysiology/biochemistry of behavior; research methods & statistics; and sensation & perception. Successful classroom activities will be demonstrated and the recent AP Exam will be reviewed.

AP Studio Art

This course will show students evocative artwork to inspire curricula, help them clarify the differences in portfolios and immerse themselves in art analysis and art-making. Participants will also learn techniques to teach different media, improve the quality of student artwork/ability levels and to raise grades. Collegial interaction, dialogue and discussion, a visit to the El Paso Museum of Art, and other extracurricular activities are included.

AP English Literature & Composition

Sessions will cover a wide range of curricula including modules focused on Heart of Darkness and other African literature, August Wilson’s Fences, and an approach that stresses building student confidence in interpreting a variety of poetry. Participants will examine methods for encouraging incisive interpretation and engaging class discussion and receive assistance with designing course material to help students in their college admissions process. Some focus will be on special issues faced by AP English teachers and on the AP exam. Participants will also experience a mock-up of an AP scoring session with examples from each question. Participants are encouraged to bring copies of successful prose and poetry lessons they use.

Pre-AP English Middle School

A foundation based on best instructional practices in reading, writing, vocabulary and syntax will be the focus of this course. Emphasis will be placed on assisting middle school teachers with their understanding of Pre-AP classwork and their active participation in encouraging students to develop the skills necessary for high school. A vertical team approach between middle and high school teachers will provide a framework for the participants.

AP Calculus BC

This course is designed to reinforce and streamline participant’s understanding of Calculus BC topics and teaching strategies. Calculus AB topics will be included; however, the focus will be on those topics required only for the BC exam and how to prepare students for the AP experience.

Pre-AP® Math Middle School

This workshop is intended to address the needs of mathematic teachers from grades 7-12 and includes exposure to the AP* Calculus materials, vocabulary and consistency of definitions, the use of word problems in the application of the material and goals, and philosophy of a Pre-AP* Mathematics course. It also addresses Pre-AP and TEKS. Vertical Team activities and materials from past AP* Calculus Examination are included.

AP Spanish Language & Culture

The course will focus on the new AP Spanish Language and Culture Course and the new Curriculum Framework. Participants will become familiar with the current exam format and with themes that explore connections among language, literature and culture through diverse global perspectives. Activities are designed with “at risk” students in mind. Participants will learn how to “coach for effort”, make student organization a habit and create lessons that develop skills and knowledge.

AP U.S. History

This course will examine the pedagogy and content relevant to teaching AP U.S. History. Discussions and presentation will be divided equally between strategies for improving student success on the AP exam and the historical content appropriate for creating an AP-level history class. Presentations on historical content will focus on general historiography, as well as American political and economic history.

AP Macroeconomics

Finally, they will examine Spanish literature within the contexts of time and place, analyze different AP exams, and create a syllabus and lesson plan for their AP course.

AP Human Geography

Designed for both new and experienced teachers, this session is structured to assist teachers with the introduction of complex content by using effective teaching strategies that support both Common Core and state curriculum standards. Emphasis is on building critical thinking and writing skills necessary for success in the AP classroom. This session will provide in-depth examination of the specific AP Human Geography content strands, such as cultural universals, scale, globalization and economic development.

Pre-AP Science Middle School

This course will give middle and high school teachers the tools to strengthen an AP Vertical Team and to align the mathematics curriculum vertically across grade levels (K-college). Participants will learn how to create a curriculum that emphasizes key math concepts at all levels of instruction. Through the implementation and vertical articulation of concrete strategies, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the skills and knowledge students need at the Pre-AP level.

This class is for new and experienced teachers as well as Chinese language educators interested in learning about instructional design and assessment for fourth-semester college Chinese courses. Learn strategies for designing and implementing an effective AP Chinese curriculum, how to develop learning activities and assessments that present language in cultural context, build students’ proficiencies in the three communicative modes and integrate authentic materials into instruction. AP exam structure, student exam preparation and performance and the AP Course Audit preparation will also be examined. Participants will learn about the language to use in general questioning, the skills to incorporate, timing, and how to integrate these elements into assessment. The class will also review the types of inquiry-based classrooms, how an inquiry-based class can still move forward through the necessary material at a reasonable pace and how to present open-ended inquiry in an approachable way to new students. Finally, participants will also assess different labs and evaluate how student vs. teacher-based (inquiry vs. cookbook) they are. If teachers bring their own labs, we will work on modifying their material and labs, rather than the stock labs provided.
