SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES

RI PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Shekhar Mehta

Greetings, dear change-makers of Rotary, Friends, one of my mantras in Rotary has been do more, grow more. I am sure you are adopting this mantra. Do more, as in bi¬gger and impactful service projects, and grow more, as in increasing our membership. There is so much excitement across the Rotary world about our Each One, Bring One effort. Everywhere I travel, club presidents, district governors, and Rotary members — both veteran and new — express appreciation that their membership e orts are inspiring the Rotary world. We are growing more, and I cannot wait to celebrate all of this success with you at the Rotary International Convention in Houston in June. There is still time to register and make your plans to join us. We are looking forward to a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will unite our members after far too much time apart.

The past and upcoming presidential conferences are looking at our new area of focus — the environment — and how our work to protect our planet must also support our efforts to grow local economies, especially in places with the greatest poverty. I also had the honor to speak at the 26th United Nations climate change conference, known as COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland. This important meeting brought together nearly 100 heads of state and government over a two-week period to set new targets for fossil fuel emission. My call to action was to restore man-groves, a crucial ecosystem that can mitigate the effects of climate change in coastal areas. Already, countries across the world are showing great enthusiasm for this plan. Our survival is at stake — the damage of environ-mental catastrophe is already upon us — and so, too, is our ability to lift the world’s most needy out of poverty and offer them hope. We must find ways to protect our planet while sustaining the economic growth necessary to achieve our highest humanitarian goals.

As we grow more, we will have so much more opportunity to do more. April is Maternal and Child Health Month, a great opportunity for your clubs to consider what you are doing to support the health of mothers and young children. Improving This is a very exciting time in Rotary, a time when the world access to care and the quality of care for women and children worldwide is an important focus for us, and it also ties in very needs us most. As we Serve to Change Lives, remember that well with our Empowering Girls initiative. I appreciate the work we are also changing ourselves. We are becoming the world’s being done by various clubs in this area of focus, and I would great change-makers and peace-builders. encourage you to think of ways to do more. The world is ready for us. It’s time to rise to that call. It has been so exciting to see Rotary members come together at the presidential conferences to share ideas about using our areas of focus to bring about big, lasting change in the world.

SAVING MOTHER & CHILDREN SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIR

PP.Kanokkate Damrongtrongsiri

Dear Fellow Rotarians, As time goes by, April has arrived once more. Here in Thailand, it is the moment of celebration for the traditional Thai New Year or Songkran Festival. People gather together, spending time with all generations of family members with their beloved, revered and respected elders. For Rotary International, April is designated as the month of Maternal and Child Health, which is one of the main goals of our collective service. This reminds us to realize and pay attention to the importance of wellness enhancement, protection, and problem prevention for mothers and children, initiating more concrete development following the Rotarian Code of Conduct. Maternal and child health is the health care given to women during pre-and-post-natal periods intended for safe pregnancy, healthy babies, and good nurture. To achieve this at the onset of pregnancy, it is suggested that pregnant women should be given optimum health care, safe delivery, and post-natal health care for appropriate nurture. The main purposes of Rotary regarding maternal and child health focus on decreasing the mortality rate of mothers and under-five-year-old children, improving the accessibility to important medical services, and supporting personnel in occupations related to maternal and child health care. Considering the 2021-22 presidential theme “Serve to Change Lives” on the aspect of maternal and child health, it alludes to the opportunities involving community services, including sharing specific health care knowledge to mothers and children, both directly and indirectly. Finally, positive change would occur, increasing safety and supporting their life. Even amid the current and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation, there had been several projects related to maternal and child health launched last year. They were created by the force of belief, faith, and cooperation from every Rotary Club in Thailand. Remarkable projects worth mentioning were the following: Breastfeeding Knowledge and Awareness Support Workshop; Family Relationship Improvement Workshop; Psychological Knowledge Workshop for Parents in Pandemic Situation Management led by Rotary Club of Phra Nakhon; Medical Device Provision for the Newborn Brain Development led by Rotary Club of Sathorn; Morale Improvement Activity for Infant Caregivers in Slum Areas led by Rotary Club of Bangkok Ploenchit; Medical Device Provision for Maternal and Child Health and Critical Patients led by the cooperation between Rotary Clubs of Thailand and many international clubs; etc. On the behalf of Maternal and Child Health Sub-Committee Chair, I would like to thank all my dear Rotarian fellows for their support, cooperation, and encouragement. You have done a great service for the communities in terms of maternal and child health. I strongly believe with high hope that we will be creating much more valuable projects for the communities and continue to serve for the highest good of all. On the occasion of the Songkran Festival, I would like to invoke the collective power of sacred entities from all realms of existence to bestow Divine Grace on all of you. May it be filled with happiness, prosperity, a healthy body, and mind, and be void of all suffering. May the power of encouragement be with you eternally, in service of humanity forever and ever.

We serve to change lives

Clinical Prof. Emeritus Udom Kachintorn, MD

Good afternoon to all, Thank you to DG Wiroon for inviting me to be a guest speaker today. I feel that the meeting is very active, but we all have to be careful. The most challenging period will be during Songkran. If the cases are high, it will prolong the situation and our economy will continue to slow down. Try to use little time while eating. I was requested to speak on how medical staff help change lives with their service heart. I have been a doctor all my life. The duties of doctors can be good examples for you all particularly with your motto – Serve to Change Lives. We provide service to change lives. We help people to make their life better. Rotarians have done this for so long. Doctors are another good example. We provide service, and we can change people’s life from being sick to becoming healthy. Doctors have 3 main duties. Firstly, our duty is to provide medical care. Secondly, we teach. Thirdly, we research to create new knowledge and search for new medicine. For service, we have 3 minor duties… 1. Examine those who are sick, provide medical care so that they can improve. As you know, more than 50 percent of the diseases come from wrong behaviors. 2. Request cooperation from patients and their relatives to help in the cure. 3. Provide preventive care as you can see clearly with the COVID situation now. This is very important. All these coincides with your motto of Serve to Change Lives. After COVID, our care and treatment will change. Previously, we take care of sick people. Now it’s you who have to take good care of your health. We have a lot of great technologies to help people take good care of themselves. For the second duty of transferring knowledge, we have to teach more. We are teachers. We share our experiences with other doctors, nurses and other medical teams. We, doctors, are the leaders of the team, but we are not the only ones. We need and have teams who work with us. We need to teach patients and their relatives on how they should take care of themselves. We focus on using our knowledge and experience to help sick people so that they can improve. We need to be teachers in a modern way. Teachers should not teach but ask questions. We need to be facilitators making them think, plan, do and succeed in their life. Teachers need to focus on practical, experience-based learning. Teachers need to be mentors. We need to understand them and allow others to be able to reach us. Finally, teachers in all areas need to promote internal learning so that it will lead to innovations. On the research side, we need to find new things. Why didn’t this operation help? Why didn’t our patients improve? At present, we involve our patients in researches. In the end, we want to make our patients’ life better. Talking about innovations, we have to research, develop and create. Innovations will lead to new things. Anything that is new and useful to others is great. It can be product, process or service. We have the father of Medicine - Prince Mahidol. He said we need to put knowledge into practice; otherwise, it’s a waste. He emphasized that we need to focus on others before ourselves. The more we give, the more we get. In China, if you do good to others, it’s considered good, not if you do good to yourself only. Mahidol University uses this as its motto. Do good to others as you would do it to yourself. This coincides with Rotary’s motto. In 1990, this doctor was well known all over the world. He found this bacteria that caused infection in your stomach and could lead to death. We had learned for so long that acid was the cause. This doctor studied hard and discovered from his research that it was from this bacteria. At first, no one believed him. He persevered. He grew the bacteria and ate it. He asked another doctor to check on him every day, and found the infection in his stomach. He used that as evidence, but still no-one believed him. He tried it on his students, still nobody believed him. One day, he was invited to present his research, but he was attacked by many other doctors present. Many years past before doctors accepted that the infection was caused by this bacteria. Nowadays, people can take medicine to kill this bacteria. This is an example of a doctor who wanted to help people suffering from the bacteria in the stomach. Another example is with a doctor in Thailand – our own DG. He’s 2 years older. He has truly served to change lives. He volunteered to work down south in the bordering area. After that, he returned to Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom to continue his studies in operation. He was invited to be a professor later. During the Tsunami, he volunteered to help with the operation there. In Myanmar, he also volunteered with his wife for weeks to help the people suffering from the disaster. He wrote down 9 things he wants to do to return to our society to improve our communities, our country and our world. Please give him a big hand. My last slide – this is Rotary’s vision statement. You are all here gathering to help people in the world, creating sustainable changes in communities. I am delighted to be here talking to you, and I feel that what you have been trying to do should also be sustainable. Sustainability is very important. According to UN on sustainability, we are No. 1 in ASEAN and 19 in the world. Thanks to the self-sufficiency philosophy of HM King Rama IX. Sustainability, sufficiency with reasons and with good immunity are important. Our King said this before the UN. But all these need to be based on knowledge, not feelings, and ethics. Life will be balanced and sustainable. I leave this with you. I’d like to emphasize HM Rama IX’s philosophy. He said we need perseverance, giving, humility, action more than words, integrity and determination to do good. With Rotary’s motto, Serve to Change Lives, I hope it will motivate you to help others to make this world a better place to live.
