PROFANE EXISTENCE P O BOX 8722, MINNEAPOLIS, MN 55408, U S
SO LITTLE-SO LATE What so this is it? O.K were a little srhaller than we planned on. Due to various factors, and a lot of last-minute decision making, what started out as a fifty-some-odd page zine has been condensed down to just 32 pages. No glossy cover here, no fluffy extravagant layout just a bare bones effort on newsprint We really didn't find any need for anything more, and anything less would not be the same. Our decision to go with this size and format is not an attempt to rip people off, buta practicality and cost-saver. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Profane Existence will continue as a bi-monthly fanzine from this issue onwards. For the foreseeable future, the amount of pages, the general allotment of content space, and $1 cover price will remain the same. The idea of inspiring learning and action is our aim and our coverage of music will continue to be based around that of similarideals. HOW YOU CAN HELP: We would appreciate well-written scene reports, with photos if possible. Try not to cover just bands but what people are doing. If all you know is the latest band gossip, then maybe you should be a little more aware! There are also several sections within the zine which could use help in article writing. Those include the Ekomedia News and From Protest to Resistance. The sections are self explanatory as to what we are looking for. We also will print larger articles from time to time, but let us know before you submit one for publication. From time to time we may print poetry, artwork, recipes, etc. We cannot guarantee submitted material will be used or can be returned. The best thing to do is send a photocopy. Please, don’t send us any show reviews! We simply don’t have room to print them.

Horrendous Lee Mutilated, your humble narrator. From time to time I will grace these pages to help convey the authors’ messages. Right now I’m here to tell you a little bit aboutwhatthis is all about So what does Profane Existence mean anyway? When the creators of this project sat down and decided on what I this was supposed to accomplish they figured out a few things they wanted to communicate. Being members of this confused world, and finding a part in the often contradicting punk ’scene’, the creators felt compelled to start a journal to help pass their time and possibly make an impact on others around them. This fanzine is basically a I vehicle in which to communicate ideas and help inspire action. , Profane Existence is a collective; a collaboration of ideas | and thoughts. "We find ourselves struggling through life I with little time devoted to effecting any positive change I benefiting all.” Are there any right answers to the world’s problems? Built around an anarchistic viewpoint of mutual I respect, maybe, just maybe peace can be attained. Real I lasting peace based on equality and freedom. For every I end there are many means, different paths to choose from. I Every small piece of compassion must be looked at as a I positive step, now matter how short-sighted the action may I seem. We all grow at different rates and have different I priorities, weaknesses and fear. Often times you may find I contradiction, or ideas you may not agree upon within I these pages. We all have to pick out what seems right for I us to inspire our own growth. I The idea is to work together. Nobody can change the I world by themselves. We live a profane existence on this I planet and it is high time we did some thing about itl I H.L.M.
Hi
I recently got a copy of M.A.S. #7.1 liked it so I read it all, but something in the article entitled 1989: a look back in time to 1988" struck me. The person who wrote it stated that New Caledonia had been granted independence. Well. I’m sorry but it’s far from being true. There has been a fight for independence on that island for years but I don t think it will achieve anything, for several reasons, at least for a long while. ... First of all France has quite a few reasons to hold on tiqht to that island. Not economic reasons, actually it has more to do with strategy. The Pacific Ocean is one of the French strongholds in that field. Nuclear tests are conducted on Murumora - remember what happened to the Rainbow Warrior in 1985? Can you imagine U.S.A. giving up Hawaii? Well?... It also has to do with the New Caledonian natives. They are a minority in the whole population, so even in case of a truly democratic decision, the white majority would prevail and of course they would choose remaining French. Or rather staying there and keep making a lot of money (needless to say of most land owners or other good businessmen), since they would leave the island in case it did become independent because they would not be wanted and would no longer have the French police and army to protect them. The last French colony - rather former French colony - that gained independence was Algeria in 1962. The situation was different. 90% of the whole population were natives, so that was slightly different irom the situation in New Caledonia where 30% only are natives^ To boot the native population is not quite united. Obviously for political reasons; in any political group - and a I pro-independence group is political - there are those who are ready to compromise, the milder side, and the diehards will stick to their guns. A couple of months ago, the independentist leader, Jean-Marie Tctibaou, who was rather middle-of-the-road *and standing for a peaceful approach, was shot dead by a more extremist leader. ..Plus In 1976 I was at my sister’s high school the native society is pretty much based on tribes and this graduation, the national anthem was playing, again is very detrimental to unity. ... . and I looked over and saw my brother not So that’s about it. New Caledonia is still a part of standing. I now understand. July 4th, 1989 was the day after the Webster Decision. That France even if it’s right on the other side of the planet. Now let’s skip to other things. I wanna ask those day I went to watch the fireworks at the state capital, the first song that was played was who wish to help me a favor. Next year I’m gonna have, to the national anthem, I could not move my write 80 pages about pop music and it s social legs to stand. As I sit here writing this my mind is I fuzzed out on painkillers. Not recreational drug use mind you, but to ease the pain in my crotch. You see today I got a Vasectomy. For those unfamiliar with the operation I’ll explain. An incision on each side of the scrotum is made and the vas I (the tube which carries sperm from the I testicles to the great outdoors) are I severed and tied off. The operation was conducted while I was awake, with a shot of valium and novocaine as a local anesthetic. The whole procedure took about an hour and was relatively painless. It cost 240 dollars, for me a weeks pay. When it seems to be a trend in the Punk I scene to have children, I've been the diehard non-conformist and sterilized myself permanently. Why such a drastic form of birth control? Allow me to give you | a few reasons. It took two million years for the Earth’s population to reach one billion people in I around 1850. 75 years later in 1925 it was I two billion, by 1960 tree billion, by 1974 1 four billion, and now stands at just about I five billion. If current trends continue the I current population of the world could double to ten billion by 2010. My friends and I will be about 40 years old then. If you think poverty and starvation in the third I world is bad now, think how bad now, think I about it more than doubled. We are all I aware these days of the environmental crisis which threatens our existence. Overpopulation not only makes this crisis I worse, it caused them in the first place. Regardless of what anyone tells you we don’t live in ’harmony’ with nature. Since about 3000 B.C humankind has learned to master its environment. This form of mastery has become an endless chain of consumption of resources which are rarely | renewed. At the end of the 1700’s a chap named | Thomas Malthus figured out the population grows exponentially while land (and hence food) supply grows arithmetically. This farsighted thinker came to the conclusion that since there was a finite amount of land, and population could grow to infinite proportions, soon or later everyone would run out of food. Malthus’ predictions would have come true by now except for a factor he did not foresee. Advances in science and technology led to the so-called 'Green I Revolution’ of the 1950’s and 60’s. By I application of chemical fertilizers.
I pesticides and herbicides food production was able to increase dramatically to feed the rapidly increasing population. However, the Green Revolution has only bought us time. The pesticides and I herbicides used to cut crop losses have I wound up breeding more and more hardy species of pests and weeds. This will soon I reach the point where only poisons which will kill these new strands of pest will also be toxic to humans. I did some research on crop production and population growth in Sri Lanka (an island nation off the coast of India) and the conclusion reached was I that even if every square foot of land was cultivated for food production, using the latest methods, population would still exceed food supply early in the next I century. In a third world nation like Sri Lanka the only cash available for foreign exchange (to buy for instance food to feed the growing population not to mention destructive enterprises like military hardware) is gained from the sale of tea, coffee and other crops to industrialized I nations. If Sri Lanka’s only exports are I agricultural products, and all of it’s land I was devoted to food production already, I how would they feed their people? The fact is, they couldn’t. If you think the famine in Ethiopia a few years back was bad, wait | until it’s world-wide. Aside from food, our rapidly increasing population requires shelter, clothing and energy for heat and cooking. For much of the world’s population this means cutting down trees. Most readers are already I aware of the dangers of deforestation, it’s I only going to get worse. With greater I numbers of people using up our resources I at a rate too rapid to replenish them we are I faced with nothing short of mass I starvation, societal collapse and perhaps | extinction. This vicious circle keeps turning. Here in I the United States the consequences of I I overpopulation are a far-away and I abstract concept. But we are a link in the ■.cycle. The U.S. with 6% of the world's I,population consumes 30% of it’s 1 resources. Our high standard of living is J obtained at the expense of the rest of the I world. For many third world peoples having I more children is their only option. They I need children as free labor on the farm and I to take care of them when they grow old. I For many their only hope is that one child I will become educated or move to an [industrialized nation sending their [earnings back home. Unfortunately in [many third world nations having many [children is a symbol of the patriarch's | virility. This leads us to a problem with no [easy solutions. Education about family [ planning and birth control in the third world I is conducted by a number of agencies, I particularly those associated with the [United Nations. Unfortunately right-wing [zealots in the U.S. government cut funding |for family planning projects in the third'
world when Reagan gained power in 1980. Many right-wing theorists such as William F. Buckley insist that population growth is beneficial since it provides a cheap source of labor in the third world which will serve a (presumably) ever expanding economy. This argument sounds like capitalist bullshit to me. I have tried to highlight a few main problems caused by over population. There is no easy solution. Concerned people like myself cannot have less than no children. But, I have no control over the reproductive processes of others. All I can do is hope that more people will arrive to the same conclusion I have. This is no world to bring another child into. Even for those of us in our late teens and early twenties the future is bleak. Destruction of our environment is reaching critical levels. It's only a matter of time before this planet can no longer support human life at the current population levels. I can offer no solutions, but I can offer some advice. I’m all for sex, being a big fan of it myself, just be responsible. Condoms, foam, sponges, I.U.D.’s and more permanent solutions such as mine can help us do our part. Otherwise all we can do is dig in for the long haul. You say you want to have children, is it feeding your ego? How do you feet out on your own, do you need security of a home? Well lets use up all the kids that we’ve got, outlaw having babies. Cut the tubes on all the guys and tie up all the ladies. Cuz if we get more kids than we've got they’ll just be fatalities, you know pawns for war, so lets havenomore. -CRIBDEATH

I What does it mean when my roommate,(Bill, the lead vocalist for Crib Death), says I should write for the new local fanzine, It’s Alright to be an Asshole? Maybe it means I’ve read too much Bukowski lately, maybe it means he’s noted a change in my attitude since quitting Crib Death three days into this summer’s tour? Maybe, just Maybe. It is rather difficult for me to be objective about | the whole affair known as my life. Perhaps an, "I don’t know", would suffice. Anyway, ! I had just returned from an expedition in carnage. Wyoming’s mule deer hunting season had opened one week earlier and had been there. Blood and life flowed from countless deer, antelope and elk. (Almost poetic, huh?). I was not a hunter of mule deer on this particular trip. I was a hiker, was also a collector. What I collected | were many nice sets of antlers. I will spend the following months reducing these deer horns to jewelry. All but one set came from the previous season’s growth and, like de§r horns do, dropped off over the winter, leaving them for me to simply pick up off the ground. The other set came from an unfortunate fellow who was entangled in the top strand of barbed wire fencing that encompasses the pasture I land and, when I stumbled upon him, was | nothing more than a dried out leather coat wrapped around a skeleton. I was carrying a machete’ and managed to hack his rack [ from his head with ease. Anyway.Over the course of four days hunting, the five hunters I was with had filled their tags,(that means killed five mule deer). I gutted one deer myself and I assisted in the dragging of two deer from the field. Back in camp, (a 26 foot R.V.), I had the pleasure of eating much of two of the five deer hearts saved from amidst the gut piies. Fresh deer heart, cooked in butter and onions, is an extremely delicious meal. Forihose of you non-vegetarians, it comes highly recommended. Skinheads, Protesters Clash

NEW YORK CITY With police looking the other way, several dozen skinheads went on a Fourth of July Rampage through the East Village causing three people to be hospitalized in unprovoked attacks and twice sacking the anarchist switchboard. For some reason, the skinheads decided that the switchboard (a basement space that has seen much anarchist organizing, but recently has been mostly a punk hang-out) was the source of leaflets calling for a July Fourth anti-patriotic flag burning rally in Washington Square park aX 6:00 PM. At about 1:30 in the afternoon, according to witnesses that were there, approximately 30 skins and their accomplices came to the Switchboard. At first they merely stood outside menacing those who were standing there. They out¬ numbered the Switchboard people by about 5 to 1, according to one person there, "which is the least they want before they start fucking with anyone", he added. Then, someone carrying a stick marched around the sidewalk yelling "who’s burning the flag?" several times. When one of the girls there asked what they wanted, she was shouted down by the skins, who spat on her as well. Finally they began trashing the switchboard, and banging on the doors until one broke off. One man who happened upon the scene stood watching the skinheads’ activity until one of them spit beer on him and
open flame in a park. We were there to defend the flag, so we were on the same side as the cops. Vk would be helping them do their jobs, so we agreed that they wouldn’t arrest us unless we got totally out of control.” A police spokesman would not com¬ ment on Bruce’s allegation of a skinhead/ police conference^^Hfa^^gj^^
knocked him down with a flying kick. When he got up he was attacked by 10-15 skins who beat him mercilessly with sticks, bottles and a trash can. Even though he was out-numbered, he was at least able to get in a few punches on one skinhead. About ten hours later he was released from Beth Israel Hospital after receiving stitches on his head, cheek, neck and fingers. By 6:00 PM, most of the skinheads involved with this attack were part of an even larger group of skinheads (about 50) in Washington Square Park attending the flag burning rally there Several times, teams of skins ganged up on anyone that objected to their intimidating people who didn’t agree with them or their version of what the Amerikan flag represents. They also set upon two women from the Anarchist Switchboard who dared to stand their ground and not backdown. One of them was assaulted by a male and female skinhead who spit in and then punched her in the face. The presence of many photographers there only encouraged the skins to further berate and surround gays and anarchists, threatening to beat anyone who disagreed with their point of view. They repeatedly chanted "usa, usa", skinhead, drop dead (sic) skinhead" and "bum a flag, we'll burn a fag", and there were many violent incidents where skinheads struck and spat upon people, all of which failed to get a response from the police that were standing near-by. This added credence to the circulating rumors that police and
skins had cut a deal to allow the skins to beat and terrorize people at will, without being arrested. Two flags were secretly burned and the perpetrators melted into the crowd, but for the most part, it was the skinheads' show. In the presence of police, one mane was beaten savagely for about ten minutes by skinheads after he gave them a Nazi-style salute. As he bled profusely from his head he was hustled by police through the crowd to a waitir\g ambulance. He was struck a few more times by the skins but the police did nothing about it. Two ranking officers on the scene included Lt McKenna and Inspector Gelfand, both of whom did nothing to stop the escalation of violent confrontations taking place. Finally after the skinheads began chasing people around the park a few times, it looked like a riot was going to erupt, so the police decided to react by closing the park at 7:00 with help of helmeted riot cops as a bullhorn blared "get out of the park or you will be subject to arrest!" and "This is not a spectator sport". When he was asked why this was being done, Gelfand said "It’s a dangerous condition / situation". After marching around the park a while longer, hoisting two Amerikan flags on poles and singing "God Bless Amerika" , the skins left the park and marched back to the East side. Once on East Ninth Street, a group of 40 skinheads attacked the Switchboard again, this time chasing a women who refused to give them film from her camera after she took photos of their actions. A man on a bike who tried to stop them was jumped and beaten to the ground by skins, and after he got out of the hospital, he said "at ieast she got away" By 8:00 the skins entered Tompkins Square Park where they were confronted by anarchist, punks, park regulars and many homeless persons from tent city, some of whom got ticks and clubs to match the ones the skins were holding. Emotions ran high and many people called for an attack to force the skinheads out of the park but instead only a shouting match took place. Finally the ranking cop in the park came on the scene and even he could tell that almost all of the skinheads were not from the Tompkins Square Park area, whereas almost all of the activists and homeless are. The skinheads left the are before any actual fight broke out, then requested the homeless and their supporters to put down their sticks and his men tossed them in the garbage. Tho Shadow

IN RETROSPECT: ’89 ANARCHIST GATHERING
In an effort to give a balanced view of the S.F. gathering we have called upon several Minneapolitans who attended to share their impressions of the event. Unfortunately only two people, of the several who stated they would contribute, actually felt motivated enough to help. Felix V. Havoc This is my fourth Anarchist Gathering haying been to all of them since Chicago in '88. This was by far the biggest and most organized Gathering as far as I can tell. Most of the events took place in a rented junior high school with an auditorium, classrooms and courtyard converted to meeting hall, workshop space and kitchen respectively. Hats off to the San Francisco Anarchist community for going through the massive effort of organizing, housing and feeding of the two to four1 thousand visitors to their city. The first day was a Women's only gathering across the bay in Oakland. There was also a Men’s only camp-out in Marin. I opted for neither and spent the day drinking with the San Francisco branch of the Mpls. Gutter Punks and hanging around the Anarchist bookstore. Thursday, July 20th, things got rolling. The only workshop I attended was "Re¬ unifying Chaos and Anarchy*. I though this would be pretty punk rock but it wasn't that great, interesting though. All through the Gathering there was a lot of heavy drinking
going on in the courtyard of the school. Drinking in junior high school brought back warm memories for me so I spent lots of time in the courtyard meeting punks from all over and running into old friends. Friday I once again only attended one workshop. This one was "Anarchy in Action: Christiania", an excellent slide presentation and discussion on a squatted section of Copenhagen which function just fine with no government. It was Fascinating to say the least. A quick note here on workshops; some were discussions, some presentations, there were about 30 of them each day. Topics were very diverse but few interested me. I found many to be namby pamby liberal self help rap sessions about dealing with being a member of “the movement". There was also a smattering of mumbo jumbo hippie religious stuff, the worst manifestation of which was the nonstop bongo blow-out which hammered my hangover head. Overall though, the workshops were educational focusing on aspects of oppressive systems and how to fight them, or alternatives to current systems. „ Saturday I went to a workshop on "Anarchism Then and Now" which was very interesting. It was a participatory sort ofi lecture by an Anarchist historian who knew his facts. As a student of history of our movement, I was glad to see so many people come to this one, especially Punks. I think too many Anarchist are unaware of the history of our movement,
this was a good place to get familiar with the big names, events and ideas. Wouldn't you know it three of the workshops I wanted to attend were scheduled at the same time. I missed "Organizing Against Racist Skinhead" and "Spotting Leninist at 20 Yards' but managed to attend "Alexander Berkman and the 1916 War Preparedness Bombing". This was a straight-up history lesson by an Anarchist researcher. The presentation examined the attempt by S.F. police to frame the main figures in the S.F. Anarchist movement by blaming them for a bombing during a 1916 military parade. This little documented episode in history showed the state at war with it’s critics using the most . underhanded means of putting them behind bars. Turns out that the bomb was probably thrown by a police agent and none of the Anarchist accused were connected in any way. Sunday was the big Anarchist picnic in the park. It was pretty fun; I got drunk and met lots of cool people. The only bad point was the damn hippie freak-out session that never ended. I've got nothing against hippies mind you, my parents are hippies, I just got sick and tired of hearing a bunch of guys who thought they were at the Rainbow Gathering bang on bongos for hours on end. Monday was the day of networking. I had arranged in advance with the organizers for a room to have a session on Youth and Anarchism. This was not as

SQUAT RESIST UPDATE ENGLAND
On the morning of Tuesday, 29th ot August, Hackney Council had planned to evict Lee House Community / Anarchist Centre. But the action was delayed as their reps were met by 60-odd supporters of the Centre who where preparing to go out with a bang. The Chief Bailiff and main council rep where persuaded to delay it with a taste of the array of paintbombs, flourbombs, etc. prepared by Lee House residents and friends to welcome the opposition. Banners and leaflets informe the locals and passers-by of the situation, and BBC Radio got wind of the days events to inform the London public. As the day continued protestors left the house and occupied the Hackney Town Hall where they entered and occupied a large committee room with a balcony at the front of the building where they hung banners and an impromptu ’Squatters t Orchestra* began with loads of wood and • metal bits lying around. As the noise ' resounded around for miles the public 'below was informed by leaflets of the reasons for the strange sights and sounds. The main reason for the the resistance was i not to physically prevent the eviction, which would have ultimately have been 1 impossible, but to draw the maximum amount of attention to the Council’s ridiculous housing policy. - U.K. Resist

New York Update After a summer lull in activity, the New York Anarchists are getting a lot of things going. A really cod Anarchist bookstore has just opened called Sabotage. It's not a free space like the now-defunct Anarchist Switchboard so hopefully a lot more can be accomplished without the drug addicts, etc. living there. It’s located at 98 St Marks, New York, NY 10009 and NYDAC has resumed having weekly meetings there every Friday. We have gotten a tot more support from the local punk community and we’re getting a lot more organized. As some of you may know, the P.O. Box number for NYDAC is no longer valid. A new contact address will hopefully be had by our next update. Remember: When you’re smashing the state, keep a song in your heart and smile on your face!

New Haven, CT and Kingston, NY now have anti-poster police and hand out fines to suspected handbillers in exactly the same manner. In New Haven, the local Green Party is challenging the law. If you know of any other places where there are anti-poster laws or police repression of the right to communicate on the street, send your info to STOP_GRO so we can coordinate efforts. ItHE EARLY THINKERS: GODWIN AND PROUDHON
[pierre^roudhon (1809-1865) shared many of the samel fundamental beliefs as Godwin. However his ideas were more timely and influential. Proudhon was staunchly I I opposed to private property in excess of one’s needs. This I led to his famous pamphlet "What is Property? Property is Theft" Proudhon centered his earlier writings on philosophy of Anarchism and economics. He was also not I I essentially a revolutionary but he saw the attainment of I I Anarchy as a slow evolution. He did though participate in r the French revolution of 1848. His writings got him imprisoned for three years under Louis-Napoleon. % Watcha kids, and greetings to you all from a hot and sunny U.K. Our U.S. chums over here just now have been expressing their dissapointment to me in not being treated to the usual U.K. weather diet of cold and rain but I’m afraid even we get the sun sometimes. Unfortunately it’s more than likely a result of the environment being so fucked up so it’s not such a good thing really; but it’s nice to get a bit of sunshine for a change! enough of me gobbing about the weather tho; let’s talk about some PUNK. So far 1989 seems to have been touring year with loads of good bands doing the biz. In January Prong were over for a few dates with Soulside and the excellent False Prophets and No Means No following soon after. Most recent U.S. visitors have been Naked Raygun and the brilliantly diverse Victim’s Family who’ve both done pretty extensive dates around the U.K. Not to be outdone by our Atlantic cousins our European friends have been making raids across the channel brandishing noise and a fair amount of positive attitude. Among the culprits have been the terminally heavy God and The Vernon Walters from Holland, Squandered Message and Pullerman from Germany and excellent French band, the Scraps. Things on the home front have been far from quiet too with the totally head crushing GODFLESH, DOOM, CONCRETE SOX, H.D.Q., BAD BEACH, E.N.T., NAPALM DEATH, INTENSE DEGREE, CULTURE SHOCK, SORE THROAT, CITY INDIANS, HOTOLATIO, BOLT THROWER, 01 POLLOI, THATCHER ON ACID, ACTIVE MINDS, GENERIC and PLEASANT VALLEY CHILDREN all gigging to various degrees around the U.K. and Europe. As you can see then, gigwise, things are pretty good over I here just now with a good solid set of venues and promoters all doing their bit to counter the boredom and frustration of living in an increasingly authoritarian, militaristic society and it beats watching T.V. anyday! If you’re planning a visit to our grimy shores there’ll be plenty to do, honest! Among the better established venues are The Dutches of York in Leeds, Planet X in Liverpool, even if it’s a dive, the Kronstadt Club in Bristol, ’ Belfast Art College and McGonagles in Dublin. The best vibes of all however are to be found in Bradford at a | place called the 1 in 12 Club. Loosely based on anarchist principals, in it’s five year existence it’s main function has been ■ to provide a place where people can meet in an environment free of sexist, racist or statist hassles, and at present there are five different collectives operating autonomously within the overall club collective. These include a P.A. / bookings collective, a bar collective, record collective, Solidarity fund and the building collective. Their functions vary from putting on gigs to maintaining the premises and raising money to keep the whole thing together. Anyone can join and subscription fee entitles the member to take part in the decision making of the club if they wish. This is done through regular weekly meetings. The only people unwelcome at the club are those those unwilling to adhere to it’s general aims and principals: Mutual aid, seif management, and cooperation. The club has no hierarchy, no leaders and no elite. "Working together to take back our lives." There you go then a quick look at what goes on at the 1 in 12. It’s an excellent place and one you shouldn’t miss visiting if you're over here. It’s recently added a cafe too where you can eat vegan and vegetarian food at reasonable prices. There’s usually gigs in most other cities around the U.K. but | the venues tend to change around in relation to availability, price,

etc. For an extensive list of gigs, demos and stuff check out the excellent monthly news sheet U.K. Resist. It will be of interest to visitors and residents alike and doesn’t even cost anything although I’m sure the kids responsible for it wouldn't say no to a small donation or even a big one if you like. On the record front things, as usual, have been ultra busy and there’s no way I'm going to remember every single bit of plastic to appear in the shops and post boxes of Britland over the past few months, but I’ll do my best and make my apologies now to anyone I miss. Among the E.P.'s to surface so far this year have been from GENERIC and HERESY. The self-financed Torched E.P. by GENERIC is an excellent four track single that positively rages from start to finish whileJHERESY’s Who's Generation 7" sees the kids getting a good sound from their studio adventures for a change. Unfortunately both bands have since parted company and are currently involved with various different projects. Elsewhere singles from SORE THROAT, DOOM DR AND THE CRIPPENS, Ol POLLOI, ATAVISTIC, DISTURBED . SNUFF, HELLBASTARD and PLAYGROUND have stopped the 5'm? ™rs from seizin9 up in the summer sun. Split singles from KILLER CRUST / UNDER SIEGE, ANOREXIA / INDECENTASSAULT and SHRAPNEL / TOXIC EPHEX have been among some of the other E.P.’s as well. Polka Slam and Crisis Point fanzines got together a while back to give away a free 7" E P featuring CULTURE SHOCK, INSTIGATORS, BOLT THROWER and H.D.Q. as well as a bumper double issue of their zines Meanwhile a motley collection of punks and ragamuffins qot together to in February to record "Punk Aid", a benefit single in aid of community recictance groupc fighting the vastly unpopular
rO.. i ax. mis is a new form of taxation introduced by the long standing right wing government of the Conservative Party to replace the old rates system with a supposedly fairer one. This however is bullshit and far from the truth. Instead of paying the old system with a newer, fairer one, we’re basically in a situation now whereby the poorer you are the more you pay: e.g. two rich lords living in a 40 room mansion will pay LESS poll tax than an average family of four living in a two room flat on a rundown council estate. It’ll come to no surprise then that resistance to the tax has been widespread and is continuing to be so with around a million people in Scotlandj-efusinrjj/^^

the the tax is still in the registration stage) Recent strikes by | local authority workers has helped with severe disruption of the registration and collection process across the U K. All profits from the single will go to community resistance groups and there is more information on the cover. L Albums continue to be the most popular form of vinyl release! here in the U.K. and the Labels have been keeping our ears clean P and our pockets empty. Peaceville has released L.P.'s by DECADENCE WITHIN (This Lunacy), AUTOPSY (Severed Survival) and a split affair with DOOM (Burythe Debt, Not the I Dead) and NO SECURITY while Earache had the 101 track SORE THROAT (Disgrace to the Corpse of Sid) and the debut LP by INTENSE DEGREE (War in Mv Head) with plans for a second GODFLESH L.P. and probably a third NAPALM DEATH L.P. who’ve recently parted company with their vocalist and guitarist. N.D. are pretty much ignored by the underground scene here now due to their increasingly money orientated rock star attitude and has a lot to do with their recent split. EXTREME NOISE TERROR released their second L.P. on their own Head Eruption label called Holocaust in Mv Head and RIPCORD have done the samel on their own Raging label with a second L.P. called Poetic I Justice. They’ve now split too and gone their separate ways. I H.D.Q. have just come up with their third L.P. (Sinking) on the I Positive label and CONCRETE SOX have a third L.P. out too on the Big Kiss label called Sewerside and a couple I just about . forgot are AXEGRlNDER's Rise of the serpent Men on Peaceville I and INSURRECTION'S self titled L.P. on Peaceville too. Still tof appear are the second L.P. from BOLT THROWER and a second I one from HELLBASTARD. Out soon too is an E.P. from Leeds based PLEASANT VALLEY CHILDREN and if it's as good as their demo it’s a must for the kids! L Well I spent last Saturday in Bradford at an all day benefit gig I for the 1 in 12 Club where among the attractions were SAW 1 THROAT, G.F.D.D. ACTIVE MINDS, PLEASANT VALLEY

CHILDREN and SEDITION. It was a pretty good day and the club made a bit of money towards a security lock for the front door. I seemed to spend most of the time playing pool and eating loads of the yummy food upstairs so I’m not the best of sources to give a review of the noise on offer but those I did see P.V.C., SEDITION, G.F.D.D. and ACTIVE MINDS had the kids grooving the night away. Food wise the veggie burgers and the wacky choccy pude are a total must!!! As I mentioned at the start of this thing the gig scene is in quite a good state at the moment and looks set to get even better, with the folks who get things going at the Kronstadt Club in Bristol in the process of trying to link up the existing network of venues / promoters into a sort of U.K. collective. All the people involved in putting on gigs will still be responsible for doing their own thing but more cooperation will hopefully lead to all around better organization for touring bands and resident bands alike so good luck to all involved. I’ll give their address at the end along with some other useful ones, and U.S. / European bands looking for gigs in the U.K. should get in touch with the Kronstadt Kids! Right then that’s just about it for now but before I go I 'll let you know about some bands that are no longer around since writing this.... . . GENERIC called it a day not long after they released their fine Torched E.P. to salvage strained friendships and most of them are involved with other projects now or soon will be. Their drummer plays with P.V.C., SAW THROAT and GREEN SABBATH, soon to do an E.P. of old Sabbath covers with ecologically sound lyrics! and their guitar player will be getting together with ex-members of BAD BEACH and DAN so look out for that, should be a killer. RIPCORD have also split and ex¬ members of them are involved with FILTH KICK, England s answer to Poison Idea, and CAN'T DECIDE who also have ex¬ members of HERESY involved. They'll both have vinyl out on the Raging label before the end of the year. CULTURE SHOCK have called it a day too and rumor has it that Dick is getting something together with some ex-members of Subhumans so keep your ears and eyes open for that one! They maybe called FISHEAD. Well, I reckon that's just about it so I'll be off for now! ADDRESS: U.K. Resist / P.O. After meaning to get off my ass for a long time and sending these guys an interview, I got the perfect excuse not to when I heard they were coming to town. Being one of my favorite bands I figured I’d plan ahead and get ready for this one... After their amazing show, thanks to those Sonic Warp folks, Bill and I kidnapped Kevin, their singer and Ted, their drummer, along with their roadie. Back at my place we fed ’em vegi burgers and did the following interview.... BILL: One thing I wanted to ask about is the line-up change... Just glancing at the back cover of your first record, is this the original line-up? Kevin: No, actually the band started in July 1984 with Ted and I and two other

BILL: It seems that RUDIMENTARY PENI is one of your obvious influences, do people tell you that a lot? TED: No not really. BILL: Kevin, your singing style in particular is almost exactly like Nick Blinko’s... KEVIN: Thanks, I’ll take that as a compliment. BILL: Totally intended. I just recently got your split with DISSENT on that record in particular... KEVIN; Almost everywhere we play people tell us we sound like them...shit! The split LP with DISSENT is mostly Beginning of the End, the album, plus an early version of the song "Sail/' just for something different. Our copies of that got lost in the maii, I think, because we never got any. BILL: Really? KEVIN: Three of us in the band have a copy but we bought them from DISSENT. BILL: Is that how they were going to pay you, in records? KEVIN; Yeah, I'm sure he mailed them too because the guy who did it is really coo! BILL: How did ^ou get hooked up with the guys from Hippycore to do the new 7"? Did they write and ask you? TED: We did that show in '86... KEVIN: How the hell did we meet those guys? TED; The show... KEVIN: No, no, no, we Knew them before. That’s why they did the show. Geez, I can t remember hew we met them, maybe just through the mail. I think they wrote us and we did an interview for the second Hippycore fanzine. They sent us the zine, which we’o never seen before, holy cow!...I think we met them that way. We’ve pretty much stayed In contact with each other because we live pretty close to where we live and their zine is so cool. the kids who sit outside the show and drink instead of paying their money and going in to see the show. I see that as more of an opposition. BILL: When you’ve been out around the country have you been seeing a greater number of "positive" things as opposed to "negative" things? KEVIN: Huh? BILL: I guess that was kind of a dud. KEVIN: I don’t know if this will answer your question or not but this is what it makes me think of. I’ve kind of thought about this before and I’ve talked about this with Ted earlier today ; about why we are doing what we are doing. I guess somewhere inside of me there must be idea that things can still be changed, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this anymore. Sometimes I say to myself "Fuck it! This is so fucking ridiculous!" You know, I could be in college learning stuff and I could be doing something totally different and getting a lot better response from people. Either I’m a real glutton for punishment or I see something happening. DAN: Ever get the feeling that being stupid is the new trend in punk and politics has gone out of style? KE^IN: Whoa yeah! Notice how things went from politics...to straight edge...to speedmetal? Politics is definitely not where it’s at these days! One guy at a show yell up to us "Why don’t you go back to England and make a million dollars?" My reply was "If we could make a million bucks in England we’d be there buddy!" That was kind of weird, we’ve never heard that one before. TED: How about "Shut up and play! Quit preaching!" DAN: have you ever played a show without explaining what each song is about? TED: Oh no, it wouldn’t be the same, it wouldn’t be us. BILL: What kinds of things do you do on the road to keep yourself amused? TED: Well, let’s see...Last week we tried to name the states in order of land area. KEVIN; Biggest states to smallest states, then we did the capitals, then we did the presidents and vice presidents... DAN: Do you have any plans on releasing other bands on Timekiller? 'KEVIN: Yeah, we'd like to someday but right now we’re not making enough money to do that. We still borrow money fo everyone we do. TED: Yeah, we’ve had to borrow money to do the next one. KEVIN: For Beginning of the End we had to borrow 2300 dollars. For Hope we only had to borrow 800 dollars. Were slowly catching up to ourselves now. DAN: Do you still do distribution? KEVIN: Yeah but we only do a few bands, mainly people we know and really like. We sell a lot of stuff through our mail order catalog. We carry DISSENT, A.P.P.L.E. and a few other bands. We’d like to do more but we're really not in that position. BILL: Sorry to change the subject but I'm going to ask a really broad question: Being out on tour and assessing wnat you see going on... TED: Oh no! BILL: What can you see it coming? KEVIN: Go ahead, I think it’s a good one. BILL: Well, have you run into any frontal opposition to the views you are trying to express? KEVIN: What do you mean, like people yelling and screaming back at us a lot? No, actually if doesn’t happen to us a lot. It’s happened now and then on the past couple of tours. Once and a while someone will get really pissed off about something we said and let us know right then and there. Then again, sometimes wait until after and then sometimes they just leave. The biggest opposition we’ve really run into is
the kids who sit outside the show and drink instead of paying their money and going in to see the show. This is so fucking ridiculous!" You know, l could be in college learning stuff and I could be doing something totally different and getting a lot better response from people. Either I’m a real glutton for punishment or I see something happening. DAN: Ever get the feeling that being stupid is the new trend in punk and politics has gone out of style? KEVIN: Whoa yeah! KEVIN. Biggest states to smallest states, then we did the capitals, then we did the presidents and vice presidents... TED: We were horrible with the presidents - but we knew the capitols and land area was kind of debatable. KEVIN: We had a couple of shows we
played that we planned ahead and saved some money to see some baseball games. We also have a little Nerf football we kick around at rest areas. DAN: Have you ever set up shows in Boulder? KEVIN: Yeah, we’ve done a few. Boulder’s got a real good scene and it helps a lot when it comes to getting people to go. Well, for all practical reasons the interview basically ended there when my roommates came home from work and things took on more of a partying atmosphere. If you get a chance, try checking out some of their stuff. They’ve got two LP’s out, an excellent 7" released on Hippycore records (which is all about animal rights with a thick booklet on the subject) called For Your Eao’s Sake and by now, a new 7" should be out on their own label entitled Hope.
M) t'AilOO* For the first 3 weeks of August ’89 I was in Mexico City visiting some of the punks there, and what fallows are some of my observations. As a country, Mexico occupies ah I important position, both economically and geographically, In many ways it is an important player in the relations between North America and Central / South America [and plays a pivotal role in U.S. foreign policy with Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Because of it’s location it aiso feels the effects of this foreign policy, with refugees from these war-torn countries crossing into Mexico illegally, some en route to the U.S. others to stay permanently. One town, Tapachula, is now the host to 60,000 to 100,000 Central Americans. And just as many Americans complain about how Mexicans move to the U.S. and displace workers, working for minimum wage and not fighting for their rights because they are "illegals", so too are some Mexicans complaining of Guatemalan refugees. In both cases its the result of U.S. imperialism. With this Mexico also faces the impact of International Monetary Fund policies; widespread poverty, the [exportation of high-quality foods such as fruits and vegetables, as well as natural resources such as petrol. Mexico is aiso a [cheap labor source for corporations such as Coke, Pepsi, Sony, etc. and the upper class constantly calls for more foreign investment. Cultural imperialism is also evident with American yuppie culture permeating all of Mexican society from pop stars to T.V. show's to fashion to massive tourism industry. Naturally there is a lot of resentment to this. In the Government there is wide-spread corruption and in recent elections it is generally accepted that the "victorious" right-wing PR I party engaged in massive electoral fraud. Almost all available wall space is covered in graffiti urging you to vote for the PRI, the left-wing PRD or else the paint on the wall is just "Punk Rock". One of the things I noticed the most | about punks in Mexico was the similarities to North American or European punks rather than the differences, and this is probably a good way to dispel any grand illusions you may have about "third world punks". Many are like punks anywhere, more interested in beer, fixing their hair and loud music than actually doing something, Having said that I think the people who were actually active had a much better analyses of class struggle, experiencing U.S. imperialism and the corruption of the state, the church and the media, than most punks in North America. With this virtually all the punks identified with anarchism, but more often than not, it was an empty anarchism - Sid Vicious Anarchy. Speaking of Sidney, ( was very surprized to see that many Mexico punks were very much into the Sex Pistols, Exploited, G.B.H. and PIL, although they’re not just 77 punks as there’s a lot of contact with bands such as Chaos U.K., Heresy, etc, so there’s a wierd kind of
paradox Like other scenes, the actual work is done by a smaller core of people. Mexico City, being the largest city in the world, has the most active scene in Mexico, with sometimes 2-3 gigs every weekend. Collectives, such as Radical Change Positive Force and Change or Death , put on events and gigs sporadically, Both these groups also organized punk festivals. Radical Change put one on in 1987 with discussions, press conferences, literature, music as well as a large gig with eleven bands who all played in two hours(M) with about 1500 people attending. There are quite a few active bands such as ME LI (Murder in the Industry), MASSACRE 68 (named after the 1968 massacre of protesters in Mexico City in which over 200 people died), RESISTENCIA, ATOXXXICO, SS-20, XENOPHOBIA, CONFLICTO HUMANO, DISOLUCION SOCIAL and more. Most of the bands play thrash, usually on pretty rough equipment, with most groups sharing guitars, amps and drums. Most bands have demos floating around while vinyl recordings are infrequent. Of these bands, ATOXXXICO and XENOPHOBIA have E.P.’s out and SS-20 have an LP out, all self produced There are also a lot of 'zines, most with a political content, also anti-capitalist, anti-kop, anti-statist and many of their names reflect this; Briqada Subversiva. Sin Leyes (without law), Contaviolencia. Antidoto, Aictos Subterraneos. Extrema Derecha, (which despite the title "Extreme Right" isn’t a fascist zine, it's straight¬ edge. I know, not much difference but it’s well intended), and PPR (Pure Fucking Noise) which by now should have it’s second issue out and is in both English and Espanole. At times groups will participate in solidarity protests such as a concert in solidarity with the Chinese student uprising and against repression, as well as a protest with the Palestinian Intifada. There is also a growing struggle being fought against Laguna Verde nuclear plant. In august ecological, citizen, student and farmers groups declared an anti-nuke week in protest, Although the left is fairly strong in Mexico, and there are anarchist groups such as TESTIMONIOS magazine and the libertarian Tierra Libertad organization, most of the punks have little contact with them citing their authoritarian and ageist attitudes as a problem. In Latin American culture, machismo is a big problem, and applies to both the mainstream society as well as the punks. Not to say this isn’t a problem in North America, it obviously is, but it is a bit of culture-shock to see such blatant sexism
^UnRk^JortfWVmerica or turope, there aren't the divisions I between the varying tendencies such as anarchist, straight edge, or "Exploited" type punks, tho often it seemed at the price of not following through with their politics or being too tolerant of shit, In any case, there was a more "family" like feeling among the punks. Most knew each other even just casually, and every Saturday many punks would hang out in "El Chopo", a street where all sorts of record vendors set up their stalls, including punks. From time to time it was common for all the punks to go together to whatever gig was happening that night. The funniest. thinq we did in Mexico was when about 100 punks stormed a bus going to a gig - punks hanging out doors, totally crammed onto the bus and no one paid! ...... Overall, despite what I perceived to be problems, I found the punks in Mexico more realistic and more in tune with what some of the ideas of punk are. They didn't have huge expensive PA systems, or big fancy equipment, but they still got up there and had fun. There wasn't the separation between band and audience so prevalent in North America, there was a strong, do it yourself feeling and a much more real, concrete basis for class struggle. I There are no record collectors in Mexico_—
punks as well. There are attempts to counter this with wimmin challenging this patriarchal shit. One example is CHAPS, a wimmins collective of punks. Although not too prolific, putting out a newsletter and holding a protest against patriarchal violence, it is a beginning. Another example is Sin Leves zine, produced by wimmin in the punk scene, with articles and graphics against machismo. In general there is a lot more wimmin involved jin the scene, in bands and zines, than in North America, which isn't saying much.

Well here goes an interview with perhaps one of the best I up-and-coming bands, who also happen to be my favorites I (not that I don’t live with them or anything), and are just I beginning to play out at the moment. They consist of Felix I on grunts, Dale on guitar wanking, Mark on rumbles and I Kirby playing a drum set. We did this one night in our living room and Jennifer, another roommate helped along as we went. At any rate, enough hype and lets get to it...as just [ about always, I did the interview...Dan that is. I DAN: Here goes the dumb first question: How did the band come together and what were your intentions for doing so? MARK: We had been talking about getting the band together since the summer of 1988. We tentatively started 1 buying equipment this winter with intentions of getting together as soon as possible. FELIX: Actually the Lords of Chaos looked down upon us and they said "We need Earthly spokespersons for our message" And then a whirlwind tornado lightning storm came down and chose us and we were then possessed with ' the powers of Chaos... KIRBY: Oh geez! [Momentary breakdown into laughter and mayhem...] DAN: Are you Anarchists? ALL: Yes DALE: Anarchy, Punk and chaos! DAN: How does choas fit into Anarchy? MARK: Chaos is a destructive power and it allows you to vent your angers at the system that oppresses us.
gearecuifMoHevolufionT FELIX: Well, nobody can do that by themself. It s not something I can do alone. It just seems pretty obvious to just about anybody [that this system is very fragile. It’s built upon an economic system based on exploitation of the third world and it’s financial | status is very fragile. We’re living on barrowed money and harrowed time. If you look at the federal deficit it’s just all to obvious that the government is running on a loan. We re living on barrowed time, environmentally and financially. The government can’t raise taxes to pay off the deficit because people would be starving in the streets.

I FELIX: Chaos is the natural form of things. Nature itself is chaos. Hurricanes are chaos. Order is a human invention, like the j concept of time. DALE: I also think it means no ideology. It allows you to judge situations without a pre-set ideology. Like dealing with the 1 problems at hand and not falling back on a mental crutch. I KIRBY: When I think of "Create Chaos", well, it’s like we live in a society that's so set on a fragile order. To create chaos means to | fuck-up the systems that control us. DAN: Another easy question: Are you pacifists? I ALL: No! FELIX: Yeah I'll pass-a-fist right through your face! KIRBY: Are you? , , DAN: Hey, I’m asking the questions here! When I’m in a band you can interview me. No, I'm not if anyone’s interested....Okay now, what are your views on revolutions? FELIX: Well, it kind of depends on the nature of the revolution, think that revolution is a spontaneous uprising of people against an oppressor or system. Unfortunately, all to often, in this century revolution has come to mean an engineered revolution by a professional class of communist organizers that have merely over-thrown capitalist systems and replaced it with an equal or I j more oppressive one of their own. I think that revolution is an | action by the masses of people, without leaders and without an organized platform or ideology forced upon them by ideologs, against an oppressive system they have had enough of. Revolution that we’ve become accustomed to is all to often a I communist version which really is just a new set of oppressors I co-opting discontented persons into overthrowing an oppressive system, then again they replace it with another oppressive! communist system. JENNIFER: Or a capitalist system. FELIX: Exactly, it's all the same. True revolution is spontaneous action of the people when it gets to the point where the friction I between the state and society becomes so great that the people 1 have to rise up and destroy the system. That's true revolution. JENNIFER: If the outcome is a capitalist system, a communist! system or lets say a monarchist system, does this kind of I outcome negate the revolution? FELIX: That’s just basically a change of power. It’s not a true revolution. , ,. JENNIFER: But how can you get the mainstream population |
*®, w%%
MARK: But ours just choses to ignore it. FELIX: Right and it's all going to come to the point where financial institutions, all institutions of capitalism, are going to collapse. Suddenly all people are going to see their money become instantly worthless. JENNIFER: How can a single person attack and undermine the capitalist system? FELIX:- That’s a mighty big task for one personi DALE Yeah! KIRBY: But we all count and we all make a difference. Like what we're doing. We're trying to make people aware through our lyrics. We influence other people just like other people influence us. Music is such a great way to spread a message. FELIX: The best we can do is try to educate more people, get the word out that the end is near. You can live a lifestyle where you can buy into the system as little as possible and when it falls apart and collapses, which I think is inevitable, then we'll find ourselves with a better chance of surviving and finally livinq a life that's free. MARK: I think it's important to convince young people to live as autonomously from the state as possible. There's a lot of people that have grown comfortable with the security the system offers I and they don’t care what goes outside their windows. I think we| have to reach the up and coming masses and show there’s an alternative to the system. They have a mind of their own and thev I should use it. P KIRBY: Yeah, that's why I’m into punk. To me it means change. It s like a revolutionary force and it caused a lot of chanqe in the way I look at the world. 1 DAN: What are your views on such things as Welfare? DALE: I get disappointed when I’m working my ass off to make l money some person just as able-bodied as me is living off welfare! and buying their food at Tom Thumb (Overpriced "convenience f store") to subsidize them. JENNIFER: What about Food Stamps? MARK: I think food is something that should be free anyway. [ There’s so much food that I see no problem with using Food Stamps. As for welfare I have to say I agree with Dale. Unfortunately we don’t live in an anarchist society. We do have to work for a living and it really bothers me to think that through my work I'm paying for someone to sit at home and watch T.V. DALE: If people have the chance to help themselves and thev don’t then it's their own fault. I FELIX: I don't see why we haVe to have a government to step in I and take care of people. People can provide for themselves You make your own choices in life,... [Interviews decays into argument over birth control, welfare and I personal responsibility ] 1 DAN:. So what about George Bush's war on drugs? KIRBY, i think that drugs have been here for a long time For a I long time the government has turned it’s back on drugs in the first place. I mean they've been importing and distributing them for a long time. Look at Vietnam, the government brought in heroin If the government really wanted to crack down on drugs it reailv could. ’ DALE: it’s really a war on urban and poor people. You don't watch the news and see police driving bulldozers through the houses of rich people snorting cocaine at parties. They’re really not goina to! the source at all. as MARK: It’s just a smokescreen to feed to the media. You hear all the hype about crack killings, gangs and what’s going on in

FELIX. I don t know. I though it was kind of cool seeing that guy I get busted out front today. Let’s face it, our neighborhood is I infested with geekers. MARK. Yeah but that s just police policy. The government isn't I throwing any money here. 1 FELIX: Still, look at wnat crack is doina to the youth of this I country. They’re spending their time and money blowing their brains out on crack. GLYCINE M OX "Soy Noize" demo Another kick-ass S. Cal crust band!! The music is raging, fast low, with a grinding guitar with only one solo to speak of as well. The lyrics are well written, covering violence, war, anti-rich, pro-"crustcore". animal rights, anti-nukes, taxes and the state of things all around. My fave, as far as the lyrics go, which are committed to rebellion. With lines like "We’re dirty drunken scums, that won’t obey their laws, we're going against the grain and we’re fighting for our cause. Greed and power, that’s what It’s for, it made us sour, CRUST CORE", yah can’t go wrong. It’s put together better than the first one with more graphics, etc on the lyric sheet there’s even a variety of different color sleeves to choose from. [ MISERY "Crust to Death" 30 min. live tape This tape is more of a good joke around the house than a serious release. It was recorded "live" in N.Y.C. [ on their last tour. RECTIFY/BAZZY & THE BUDGIES split LP First, the RECTIFY side. High energy H / C; although still lacking in power, this is way better than their "20th Century" EP. Cool artwork and intelligent lyrics add to their contribution. Now, for BAZZY AND THE BUDGIES: This band is actually members of the DISTURBED with BAZ2Y from "Blown to Bits" fanzine taking on vocals. SAW THROAT "IndeStroy" LP t Quite a change hens from the fast and furious, cynical hardcore previously heard from this band’s predecessor. SORE THROAT. This one seems to be more of a theme album, in this case evolving around the destruction of the Earth by greedy industry. For the most part, the music is slow and dirgish, utilizing a lot of percussion and synthesizers. Included is a poster with a panel of top-notch artwork to accompany the lyrics of each song. The tone here has taken a sharp note os seriousness, very different from the stuff they put out before. TERRIBLE VIRTUE "I.Only Laugh When it Hurts" demo This b a really fucking great demo. For one thing the musk: is raging thrash, but the main thing is that its one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a long time. Not as assholish as Stikky, nor as vindictive. The best song on here is "Gnarly" about S. TRIBE OF RESISTANCE "Smash Apartheid" ep this is the "rough mix" of the soon to be released 7" and it’s really good, sort of like Dead Silence, but with more power and distortion which never hurts. ROBBING THE POOR TO PAY THE RICH The international Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank together regulate the world's economy for the benefit of the multinational corporations and the governments of the rich nations. The world bank makes loans to poorer countries I for massive projects which produce a profit on the capital invested. Similar loans aremade by large commercial banks including Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds and the Midland*. The schemes that they fund lead directly to disruption and suffering for the masses of people affected as well as destroying the environment i.e. the giant dam projects in Brazil but only the wealthy elite benefit. The IMF is the debt collection agency for these loans. It imposes "austerity measures" which demand cuts in public spending on health, education and the development and the abolition of subsidies on food and transport. Wages are reduced and currency devalued. The 'debtor' countries are encouraged to grow cash crops instead of food for their own peoples. It is interesting to note, however, that the IMF does not insist on a decrease in arms expenditures. 1 For the world's ruling clique th debt 'crisis' is simply a dread that the whole rotten carcass of international finance might Crash. The purpose of austerity I measures and debt rescheduling is to allow banks and their allies to keep on bleeding dry the poor nations of Africa and Latin America. The pre - tax profits of Britain's Big Four banks was $4 billion. The banks and the multinationals are making profits out of poverty. Despite the massive systematic oppression there is world-wide resistance from the people who suffer as a result of the lust for profits of the rich and powerful. In Bolivia there have been six general strikes in two years in protest at austerity measures and in Brazil and elsewhere the poor and dispossessed are organizing to fight back. The debt is a symptom of a world organized for the benefit of a minority. Through themselves, the resistance to oppressive institutions like banks and the IMF will continue to increase until all such institutions are completely abolished. By working together people can create a world based on sharing and cooperation, on freedom, ecology and peace. -GREENPEACE (LONDON) I COLLECTIVE U.S. Savings and Loans are also responsible for the exploitation. Fueled by short-term greed they made many 'high-risk', short term loans to Third World governments. Of course with deflation of foreign currency, the governments cannot pay back the loans on schedule, even with austerity measures. This means a loss for the S & L’s which are now in need of a multi-billion dollar bail-out Irony has it that the S & L’s were set up by the U.S. government to make cheap loans to first time home-owners. Due to their present lack of money, fewer loans can be made causing homelessness in the 'First World’.

Okay now, here’s the rundown on the zines here. First, if you do a zine and want it reviewed here, please send us a copy as we cannot keep up with what's out there without people sending them to us. It isn’t all that important but we’d like to print the price, including postage, with the reviews so people will know how much they cost if they want to get a copy. Now, some of the ’zines reviewed here are a bit old, many J bordering upon ancient, but that's life I guess. Please do not send any fascist, racist, sexist, etc. material as I we won’t review it and please, only stuff our readers may have interest in (no Gulf Review Weekly please!). BAD NEWZ #12/$3 8 1/2x11-offset-76 pages This is probably the best fanzine to read on a rainy day; meaning it'll take you the whole day to read everything in itl Bob Z manages to put together quite a wide variety of material and each issue has a new twist of surprises. A large amount of sex orientated photos and cartoons seem to be a re-occuring theme in recent issues. It seems a few people have taken to putting down Bob's efforts because of this, although I see nothing wrong, especially as it doesn’t seem to be out of context Interview-wise, we have the SPNGEHEAD EXPERIENCE (yes, they actually wear sponges on their heads!), THE DWARVES, DEAD STEELMILL...and Dave from Roadkill Records. We j also get to read about the latest exploits of the Kennedys...er...well, some juicy bits anyway, plus loads of live reviews, record reviews, cassette reviews, zeen reviews and enormous of poetry, art-bits and comics. CRISIS POINT #3 / POLKA SLAM #2 split issue/??? 51/2x8 1/2 - offset- 112 pages A super thick one here, mainly due to the fact its really two zines in one. Also have some small article bits, scene reports, artwork, vegan recipes....The interviews are short and direct no major deal, but with a little more overall polish, this could turn into a great zine soon. DISOBEY/3739 Oak Glen Drive / Newbury Park, CA 91302
THE DORKTIMES#3/$1 5 1/2x8 1/2-copied-12 pages srna^‘ follow effort here. Interviews with BOO HISS THPTBT, THE DISAPOINTMENTS and some reviews and other bits. This fanzine needs more stuff!. ■
DRIBBLING PIG MUCOUS #4/$1 7" x 8 1/2" - copied - 32 pages At first glance we have the average posi-punk fanzine here. This particular one has interviews with 7 SECONDS (Yawn) M.S.I., 5 FT. NOTHING and THE CAUSE. Fortunately on a closer inspection, some pretty decent reading can be found. Material on animal rights, racism and anarchism, as well as reviews, comics, etc. Mike Simpson 85Tarrow Crest/Ajax, Ontario/ LI5 4W3 /Canada
FACTSHEET FIVE #31 -32/S2 8 1/2" x 11" - offset/ newsprint - 112 pages If you don’t like the way we review your stuff, try sending it this zine. Basically what we have here is a fanzine almost entirely made up of reviews. In fact there’s more reviews in each issue of FF then I hope to do in my lifetime! Mainly fanzines are reviewed but also music, video, games, etc. This is where to look to find out what’s going on in the sub-culture scene. Mike Gunderioy / 8 Arizona Ave. / Rensselaer, NY 12144-4502
FLIPSIDE #81 and 62 / Must be free because who would pay for it? 8 1/2 x 11 - offset (newsprint) with expensive glossy color-96 pages This has got to be the worst fanzines we’ve ever gotten! So why review it than? Spite, I guess. At any rate, these people think of themselves as the gods of punkdom and it's ’unpunk’ to disagree with them. Who gives a fuck anyway? Not me really...lf you’re into reading interviews with popstars than this one is for you. It may have been good at one time, but there are not enough remaining good points to make it worthwhile. FLIPSIDE/P.O. Box 363/Whittier, CA 90608
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION #11/$1 8 1/2" x 11" - offset/ newsprint -16 pages A Pennsylvania scene report, an Interview with BIMSKALABAM and the rest of the zine is pretty much devoted to music reviews, mainly in order of what label they appear. A unique idea and worth the read, c/o Frank Peam Jr. / 4992 Indian Trail Road / Northampton, PA 18067
THE HAPPY THRASHER #9/$1.50 8 1/2" x 11"-copied-32 pages Enough to keep any thrasher happy! Actually there’s more to this one than music coverage! Besides the interviews with BLIND APPROACH, DESTRUCTION and PORN ORCHARD, reviews, etc. we have the collection of various bits and pieces which make up my favorite part of this ’zine. This being the art, stories and opinions which give it a VERY cynical view. It’s good! c/o Tin-Ear/2308 N. Sacramento/Orange, CA 92667
HIGHSCHOOL IS A WASTELAND/SI 8 1/2 x 11 - copied - 28 pages By far the biggest and best issue yet Layout is still pretty uncreative but consistent material make this one worth reading. Interviews are with MORAL CRUX, DEAD SILENCE, NO PUN INTENDED, TERMINAL CONFUSION and the PORCELAIN BOYS. We also get a bit of reviews, shows, records and zines, plus opinions and more...Look for Glen’s new ’zine, title still to be announced (he graduated - get it?). GLEN HIRABAYASHI / 9325 Garrison Way / Eden 1 Prairie, MN 55347 JERSEY BEAT #38/$2 8 1/2 x 11 - offset/newsprint - 48 pages Inside this issue it states that #40 will be the last issue of this long running fanzine - not enough to write about In New Jersey I guess. At any rate, we’ve got interviews with AMERICAN STANDARD and ORIFICE, We’ve got an "exclusive" inside look at the secret lives of punk rock drummers, we’ve got editorials, we’ve got opinions, we’ve got reviews and most of all, we’ve got a layout as boring as FACTSHEET FIVE...OK, that’s maybe a bit extreme. Probably ope of the most consistent fanzines available, although the direction is not my bag. 418 Gregory Ave. / Weehawten, N J 07087 MAXIMUMROCKNROLL/$2.50 8 1/2" x 11"-offset/newsprint - 128 pages
The punkalog: Always worth reading. Haven’t you heard by now that MRR is just a clone-zine of the now defunct MAS.? P.O. Box 288 / Berkeley, CA 94701 POLEMIC#1-3/??? 5 1/2x8 1/2 -offset -20-24 pages , This has to be one of my new favorites. Put out by Mick from CHEMICAL WARFARE zine, this one seems to 1 be a more personal vehicle for expression. #1 is 20 has interviews with NOX MORTIS, M ,ittle one with CONDEMNED MINORITY. #2 has interviews with PERJURY and i ADVANCED WARNING. #3 has no interviews what-soever. Really though, the mixture or intelligent articles and creative artwork is what realty keep this one going, j i T!lfre s ver^ ****** here 1 myself in disagreement with and I’ve found this one to be one of the most educating ’zines ever. Straight ahead anarchy in action here and I hope this one continues. All profits from the sales go to the Hunt Saboteurs and #1 comes with an A.LF. poster. 1 POLEMIC o/o 70 High Street / Leicester, LEI 5YP England ’ 666 1/2 #6/ $3
Big. - rubber stamped - Above average number of I pages [ Just when I thought it was safe to go get my mail, another issue of 666 1/2 showed up..AAIIIEEEE!!!.. Actually, this is one of the funniest fanzines I’ve ever read. Besides boring punk rock stuff I we have these really great little anecdotes and stories I which really make this worthwhile. While reading the I "Need an Image" gag article, my roommate pointed out I that he fit into the "noise" label while nobody he knew was a "USA" punk, I even heard he was thinking of I changing Destroy’s name to "Chemical Spillage" as I suggested in the ’zine. As for the punk stuff, we have I some interviews, with THE FIXTURES, DESCONTROL and PROPHECY OF DOOM to name a few, some scene reports and even some reviews thrown in out of I niceness. (If s not realty rubber stampedl) Steve /111 Famingham RD / Caterham, Surrey CR3 8LN / England 1 SKULL SESSION #12 8 1/2 x 11 - copies - 30 pages RAPED teenagers, BRAINDAMAGE, ®|NERICA^ SKELETAL EARTH, NASAL SEX, BEYOND, SUVERSE. Other stuff. "Poser and Hobbes", classifieds (well, sort of...), newspaper clippings, etc. Not at all bad reading and lotsof information about newer H/C bands. POLITICAL BRAND This mag has been around for over 100 years. It's basically an anarchist mag with profiles on groups lie Rota Zora, Class War, etc. Unfortunately, it’s all in Swedish, but it does come with an English translation sheet which gives you the gist of the current issue. Besides that it has Killer fuckin’ graphics, which can be photocopied and be reused. This is definitely one of the best revolutionary papers ever. (R®T) Brand / P.O. Box 150 / 15,104 Q5 / Stockholm, Sweden COUNTER INF0RMATI0N#24/SAE/1RC Newspaper-4 pages A really happening news sheet from Scotland. Major articles concern poll tax resistance but also has news of events happening around the world. This is getting bigger, better and more impressive each issue. Cheers to the people doing it keep up the great workl Pigeonhole Cl, C/o 11 Forth Street / Edinburgh / SCOTLAND
FIGHT BACKJ#2/$1 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 - copied - 24 pages Cool ’radical feminist ’zine here. Actually, this line deals with many issues, mainly based around equality, from Wimmin’s issues to animal rights. Many opinions, articles, poetry, artwork, etc. Highlights include; a great looking cover to start, a well-written piece about the Take Back the Night rally, communiques and a reproducible center flyer. Members of RABL and A.Y.F. are Involved with this project and I really look forward to the next Issue of this fine publication. I’ve heard they may be printing on a monthly basis now. FIGHT BACK! c/o A.Y.F. / P.O. Box 8585 / Minneapolis, MN 55408
MAGAZINES & PAMPHLETS SOME PLACE LIKE EARTH #4/$.50 I 5 1/2x8 1/2-copied-24pages There’s quite a lot of information crammed into this little zine. Mostly Informational articles on subjects ranging from the Military-Industrial Complex to Iran-Contra I cover-up to squatting. A good collection although the bad layout and low quality reproduction make the reading a bit difficult at times. LAST MINUTE PRODUCTIONS c/o Chris Caggiano / 1737 Grove St #1 / Ridgewood, NY 11385
YOU CAN DO IT./Free 5 1/2 x 81/2 - copied 4 pages A hand written primer for wimmin’s’ rights issues, of the kind likely to be handed out at pro-choice rallies. It’s put together really well, utilizing decorative art and has a few contact addresses for similar but larger anarchist and feminist organizations. | Phil @ Void c/o Wooden Shoe Books /112s 20th St / Phila, PA
I TORCH (July 15th - September 14th)/$1 Newspaper-8 pages These are the people spearheading the drive towards a national anarchist newspaper, and by judging their L present efforts, it will be something to look forward to. | The first article on the front page is about the crushing f of the anti-govemment uprising in China, but a huge [ article about the Left Green Party In the U.S. seems to I dominate this issue. The last 2 pages are in Spanish 1 and seem to be devoted to an article on Leninism. This I Issue contained a special pull-out edition of ON GOGOL BOULEVARD (see separate review)
TORONTO ECOMEDIABULLETIN/postage 7"x8 1/2“-offset-4 pages Basically a bi-weekly news sheet containing views from I L an anarchist perspective. They do a wonderful Job of I keeping up, but I must admit to disagreement on a lot I I of their opinions. I P.O. Box 915, Stn. F / Toronto, Ont M4Y 2N9 / ] I Canada
YOUTH LIB.#1 /SI ppd. 7 x 8 1/2 - copied - 20 pages | The name pretty much speaks for itself. A zine here dealing with the much overlooked subject of Youth Liberation. Mainly made up of newspaper clippings articles from other sources and opinions of the editor. I | can’t say I agree with all of it but it is interesting noneI the-less. Syndicat des Eleves / 2035 Boul. St-Laurent / Montreal, Quebec, H2X 2T3 / Canada
XERO-GRAPHIC WARFARE 8 1/2"x 11"-offset-20 pages This specimen being reviewed would more aptly fall under the category of being a book, as to the amount of attention that was given when compiling. What we have is a collection of "Posters of the New York City Music Scene" compiled by Kevin Hein. 25 flyer reproductions in all, they are by many different artists, each with a unique style. There is a small bit by Bob Z in the beginning explaining a little about the situation in New York and the anti-postering laws there. I recommend this to anyone interested in collecting flyers, but it’s also nice to just look at Rayozine Studios / P.O. Box 291 / Cooper Station / New York, NY 10270
NO LONGER SILENT#2/??? 51/2x8 1/2 -offset- 20 pages This is quit a nifty little zine with a theme following the title. The contents revolve around spreading anarchist ideals though mini articles, poetry and opinions. The layout and graphic quality is well above average and shows a lot of refreshing creativity. A new addition is a letters section which may grow into a valuable source of communication in the future. Excellent Black Web Productions / P.O. Box 3582 / Tucsan, Arizona 85722
ON GOGOL BOULEVARD Vol. 2, no 3-4 / $1 newspaper - 8 pages A rather small issue here, basically due to money and time problems (sound familiar?). This is basically a | networking bulletin for anarchist activists on both sides of the division between the East* and the ’West\ The big gist of this issue is an article outlining an activists trip to Poland and whats going on there. Lots of Information and a million ways to get Involved, an open door...so what are you waiting for; a written Invitation? | Excellent as always. 151 First Ave #02/New York, NY 10003
SLINGSHOT #29/$1 81/2x11 -offset-24 pages Obviously this Issue, of this San Francisco-based publication, came out Just before the Anarchist I Gathering as a great deal of space is devoted to details | on preparations. Keeping with the idea of a regional Anarchist Journal, this magazine does an excellent job at covering the events of the Bay Area. Some juicy bite in this issue include reports of demonstrations against ! the supreme court's decision on wimmin's' right to have an abortion and a pro-"Day of Action" article. Strongly suggested. 700 Eshleman Hall / Berkeley, CA 94720
