Welcome to the PQ Autumn Issue #73

his is the first issue of PQ’s nineteenth year of publication and the third year since PoloLine took over publishing this top quality international quarterly polo magazine. We have had mixed weather in Europe in August and September but plenty of clubs continued playing until almost the end of September. The European summer season is now over and ponies are out at grass having a well earned rest, prior to some of them coming in for the arena polo season. In this issue we cover the second half of the UK summer season, with some of the 20 goal tournaments and a wide variety of lesser handicap tournaments from different UK venues, including some Services Clubs and Beach Polo tournaments. We have reports on a number of WPT and other tournaments from the European circuit, including Deauville and Sotogrande and a report on the first Arena Polo tournament in St Moritz. The World Polo Tour now moves to Argentina for their season and these tournaments and many others will be covered in our winter issue. Just as we were going to print, we heard the tragic news of the deaths in a helicopter crash of Charles Stisted, Chief Executive of Guards Polo Club and Ian Wooldridge, Director of Wooldridge Group, a playing member at Guards Polo Club and the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. Our thoughts are with their families and the family of their pilot, who also died. A tribute to them will be in our winter issue. I thank all our subscribers for their continued support and hope all our readers enjoy this issue.

Sotogrande - High Goal Once again, the International High Goal Tournament in Sotogrande has three different champions. After the Ahmibah Triple Crown, no team has won consecutively at Santa María Polo Club and this season was no exception. Furthermore, and as if this weren’t enough, it’s been a year in which some of the big teams have returned and ended up on the podium.

The arrival of high-goal polo in Sotogrande not only brings an excellent level of game but also the fact that urban areas receive thousands of tourists and polo lovers who travel there to enjoy the warm weather in the south of Cadiz. The Gold Cup has been played since 1971 and it currently forms part of the World Polo Tour calendar as the WPT

In the previous season, Ahmibah returned after having taken a break during 2009, and having played that wellremembered 2008 season when they won the Triple Crown Tournament. Ellerston is also back. After failing to continue their winning pace in England, they decided to seek new directions

directions and thus arrived in Sotogrande. Lechuza Caracas also participated in the High Goal tournaments after making their return to Spanish polo, and Dos Lunas and Ayala Polo Team’s line-ups were once again seeking to repeat their previous performances at Santa María Polo Club.

Ellerston’s victory took its time, but they won the Copa de Oro After twelve top-level matches, the moment most eagerly awaited by all polo lovers had come, the 39th International High Goal Tournament final in Sotogrande, with Ellerston and Lechuza Caracas as the main figures. With the game scheduled for 6:30 p.m., two hours ahead of the match

the public were already nearby Los Pinos, enjoying a unique outing as is the case with the grand tournament final. The official team presentation and the Spanish horse parade organised by the club proved that this International Tournament continues to grow in every single aspect every season. With the teams on the playing field, the initial throw-in marked the beginning of

the last big match of the year at Santa María Polo Club. From the moment the first ball rolled, Ellerston’s determination and outstanding attack was reflected in a 4-1 in their favour, and that is how the first chukka ended. James Packer’s team continued to lead the match during the second period when they managed to score another goal and took a 5-2 lead. Lechuza tightened their game and

owing to a job well done by Juan Martín Nero and Juan Ambroggio, they managed to impose their style a little and were thus able to reduce the difference to 7-5. However, the match was gradually starting to step up its pace in this high goal final, and it became evident due to the applause given by the spectators who were already enjoying an electrifying match at Los Pinos. After the fourth chukka, Facundo 19

Pieres took control of the game during those seven minutes and owing to his quality and effectiveness he allowed Ellerston to maintain a two-goal lead (8-6), and despite Lechuza Caracas’ attempts, they were not able to reduce the difference on the scoreboard, but it was in the fifth chukka that some good and well coordinated movements performed by Victor Vargas’ team allowed them to win that period 3-0, and thus the last chukka began with a minimum

difference (9-8), and they were taking the lead on the scoreboard for the first time during the match. Once they reached the sixth and seventh chukka, spectators were undoubtedly enjoying the speed and frenzy in this sport. First, it was Nero who unbalanced the game with an extremely well converted 60-yard penalty shot, but it was Facundo who managed to tie the match after scoring two goals, and thus the game went into overtime. Little after the extra chukka began, South African player Chris Mackenzie performed a good personal play and reached the winning teams’ goal posts, but was unable to score. Two minutes later, Ambroggio took the ball from midfield but hit a final deflected shot. Up until then, both teams were

running around at top speed trying to score a minimum difference to win the Gold Cup. But then, following an increasingly dramatic to-and-fro play, with only two minutes to go before the chukka ended and with a 60-yard penalty shot, Facundo Pieres did not fail to score, thus establishing Ellerston as the champions, and receiving his welldeserved prize as best player of the final. A few minutes later and after celebrating at their ponylines, Princess Beatrice d’Orleans presented Ellerstina Polo Team with the eagerly awaited Gold Cup.

Lechuza Caracas returned to Sotogrande and raised the Copa de Plata For the 2010 season, Lechuza Caracas had decided to return to Spanish polo at Sotogrande, one of their 21

favourite headquarters. After having participated in the US and UK seasons, Víctor Vargas’ team presented a lineup comprising Juan Martín Nero, Juan Ambroggio and Chris Mackenzie, who showed an intensely offensive power which paid off throughout the Silver Cup and thus allowed them to play the decisive match against Ahmibah, who had taken a run-up after winning the Bronze Cup a few days before. In the qualifying stage, it was all victories for Ahmibah Polo Team and, in fact, they also beat Lechuza Caracas on the second scheduled date by a tight 11-10. Later, both teams would be meeting up once again in the final. The day dawned sunny, and in the area surrounding Santa María Polo Club, the only thing people talked

about was how fit the teams were to play the final, which took its time as the first ball hit the ground at seven o’clock in the evening, and thus the second grand final of the high goal season began. With a game based on Juan Martín Nero’s organising skills, they beat Ahmibah thanks to their determination and effectiveness when the time came to reach their opponents’ goal posts. keep up with their play to isolate Pablo Mac Donough, who did not manage to find any spaces to score goals comfortably. It was only in the third chukka that Ahmibah managed to adjust their game given the strategy imposed by Lechuza Caracas, and thus they took a 6-5 lead. However, it was only a matter of time until Victor Vargas’ team got ahead once again, and in the sixth chukka Lechuza showed overall supremacy and reaffirmed the white team’s outstanding performance. Consequently, they won 11-9 and raised the Silver Cup on the Sotogrande podium.

Ahmibah’s winning path towards the Copa de Bronze The first high goal tournament of the Sotogrande season delighted everybody with a great match. In the 39th International Polo Tournament final, Ahmibah and Ellerston met for the first time outside of England and in a special situation. After an excellent 2008 season when they won the Triple Crown, Bahar Jeffri’s team did not formed part of the 2009 teams, but was now back to seek the crown they had left behind. On the opposite side of the field was Ellerston, one of the world powers who had abandoned their installations in the United Kingdom a few months earlier

and were returning to World Polo Tour calendar polo in Sotogrande. The game was no alien to this fact and undoubtedly everybody celebrated the coming of the first high goal final. Once they were on the field, Ahmibah began playing a more aggressive game than their opponents and showed total supremacy, both game-wise and on the scoreboard. In addition to Pablo Mac Donough’s good work there was an offensive power generated by Bahar Jeffri, who proved that he continues to progress. Valerio Zubiaurre was tireless in midfield both attacking and defending, and had Henry Fisher contributing from his back position. Ahmibah were able to impose their pace and won the second chukka 7-3 and it seemed as though the final was

heading towards a victory, but with Ellerston on the opposite side, and further more, with a young team featuring players like Facundo and Nicolás Pieres, Santiago Stirling and Jamie Paker’s power anything could happen. As from the fourth chukka, the game became more attractive and faster as the teams scored one goal after another, and if it hadn’t been for certain occasions when Ellerston were unable to score as they usually do, it could have been a whole different story. But Ahmibah was able to take advantage of those mistakes and ended up winning 16-14, thus receiving the first trophy of the High Goal season which was very well-deserved, and for the team’s personal account this meant their fourth consecutive title.

2010 High Goal Statistics Throughout this path, the teams that played to win the Gold Cup which was finally won by Ellerston, converted 256 goals in 12 matches played, with an average of 21.3 goals per game. In the Silver Cup, the same number of goals were converted during the tournament, and in the Bronze Cup, 148 goals were scored. When the season concluded, we were able to calculate that 660 goals were scored during 32 matches, and therefore each game had an average of a little over 20 goals per match. The game with the highest number of goals was the Bronze Cup final when Ahmibah beat Ellerston 16-14 in a match with an average of 5 goals per chukka.

Sotogrande - New Facilities

The project considers the building of 4 modules of 40 stables each, which may be home to a complete high handicap polo team. The final result will be a group of 160 stalls (4 teams) and their respective amenities which

are described below. Two stages of implementation have been defined: The first stage, which is already finished, considers 2 modules of 40 stalls each, an exercise track, roads,

approach roads and gardening. The second stage involves the construction of 2 modules of 40 stalls each plus amenities, and an exercise track of sand and dampness by flooding.

CENTRAL BUILDING The module of stables consists of a two-storey central building of 313 m2, planned to be used by grooms, professionals and patrons. -Ground floor: patrons´ room and kitchen – grooms´room. -First floor: 4 bedrooms and 3 changing rooms for 7 grooms.

STABLES BUILDING The module consists of 40 stalls of 3,50m x 3,50m each. The stalls are opened, with frontal folding doors made by Rower & Rub. They are fit out with

feeding troughs, feed bags and automatic drinking troughs. Both front doors are arranged towards large porches where horses have space enough to be tied and comfortably prepared. The covered side porches will let grooms and horses to move fall around the stables. A large smithy-covered area has been also placed in order to give and easier and better attention to all horses lodged there. Besides, each module will have a spacious and well-equipped harness room in a relation of one per eight horses. 31

LATERAL BUILDING – DOUBLE FLOOR A veterinarian room has been placed in ground floor, suitable for diagnosis and treatment of all horses housed there. The room has all the necessary space and equipment, laundry room for blankets and bandages, and a tool warehouse as well. The first floor was set aside for building a loft which will be assigned to a professional.

LATERAL WAREHOUSE BUILDING One of the most important amenities of the building is the high ceiling

warehouse of 8m x 8m, with capacity to stock bales and shaving for feeding animals during a whole month. Besides, it also has silos with capacity to storage grains for feeding during the same period of time.

LIGHTING AND VENTILATION A double roof has been built above the stalls, which forms a gap that helps lightning and ventilation reach the whole area. The stalls are covered with a metallic film with a two layers panel and a polyurethane insulator for keeping an adequate thermal insulation all around the area.

SECURITY The stalls are monitored by a surveillance video connected to the communication net, which permit the correct display and monitoring.

TRAINNING AREA

CIRCULATION

The kind of horseshoe disposition which leaves a free space in the central area helps the training to be easier (Exercise Area). Moreover, a last generation exercising track is planned, which will have automated control and surface hardness due to the dampness flood system. The track will be made of light fiber silica sand which will contribute to lower the compression. So the mix remains flexible and the track is even, keeps the necessary dampness and the maintenance is much easier. This way horses will always be training and working in an adequate track. The total surface of the exercising area will have a surface of 6,500m2 while the water track will be 350m long and near 7.50m wide.

The place will have a circulating road around the stables. Said road will join the stables with the fields, the access road used by the vehicles carrying the horses, the cars of the personnel and polo professionals. The area will also have an exclusive path for horses and services that will connect them with the training track and the stables. Finally, there will be a road surrounding the exercise track that communicates the dunghills with the central dump with capacity for 500 cm3 of stock (one month aprox).

TACKING AND PRACTICE FIELD The place will have a field of statutory measurement that will be devoted to tacking and training.

As happened in Dubai, UK and St. Tropez, the Instituto de Promoción Turística de la República Argentina (INPROTUR) hosted the already traditional Argentine Night, in its fourth edition, this time at Santa María Polo Club, in Sotogrande, as a part of the club's international polo season. The event was attended by more than 100 special guests, among them patrons, players and club authorities. As usual in every INPROTUR event, organized specially to spread the Argentine culture, goods as well as the country's wonders, and guests enjoyed a cocktail, as well as the worldwide famous Argentine asado and wines, and a spectacular tango show.

prestigious competition is the Gold Cup, part of the WPT Cup category and awarding 70 points to the winning team for the World Polo Tour. In the last edition of the tournament, six 20-goal line-ups took part. It featured Bautista Heguy’s return to French polo where he wore the Royal Barriere polo shirt, representing a team that had won the tournament in 2009. HB Polo team, Talandracas and Blackstorm formed zone I, while Royal Barriere, Polo de Deauville and El Remanso formed zone II. After the qualifying matches, Talandracas, with the same players as the previous season with the exception of Argentine Matías Benoit who replaced his fellow countryman Juan Chavanne, won the semi-finals 12-8 against Blackstorm in a game that began favouring Edouard Carmignac’s team, owing to a goal scored by Edouard himself. The remaining minutes of the first period were very intense, with goals scored by Lucas Monteverde for Talandracas, and Marcos Di Paola and Clemente Zavaleta for Blackstorm. By the time they reached the first break, the match was tied at 3-3. During the following periods, Talandracas took a slight lead on the scoreboard owing to a job well done by Guillermo Terrera and Lucas Monteverde in midfield, and thus managed to stretch the result to 8-4 by the end of the third chukka. During the second half of the match, Talandracas kept control of the game and managed to maintain the lead until the end of the match, which ended up with a 12-8 win, securing their place in the Gold Cup final. Once the first match of the day had concluded, Polo de Deauville and Royal Barriere went out onto the field to see who would be the second finalist of the most important tournament of the year at the French club. The Polo de Deauville team took a 2-1 lead in the first chukka owing to goals scored by Darío Musso and Diego Cavanagh. Nevertheless, Francisco Bensadon, who has been taking part in this tournament for over ten years, converted a 40-yard penalty shot and tied the match at 2-2. But it was Valentín Novillo Astrada who scored two goals allowing Polo de Deauville to take a 4-2 lead on the scoreboard.

Bautista Heguy’s magic helped reduce the difference in the third period and once they reached the fourth chukka, Polo de Deauville managed to find a way to get ahead and took a 7-4 lead, but after two goals scored by Bautista Heguy, the score was 7-6 in favour of Polo de Deauville. game began with Matías Benoit scoring a goal for Talandracas, taking a 1-0 lead, though Valentín Novillo Astrada and Darío Musso quickly scored a goal each and allowed Polo de Deauville to get ahead on the scoreboard and took a 2-1 lead which they would later stretch to 4-2. As the weather turned colder, Talandracas reappeared in the third chukka, took control of the game, adjusted scores and dominated the following four periods of play. Firstly, with two goals scored by Lucas Monteverde, the team took a 5-4 lead over Polo de Deauville. Lucas then stretched the difference to 7-4 in favour of his team just a few minutes later. Another goal scored by Matías Benoit secured a comfortable 8-4 in favour of Talandracas when the end of the match was drawing near. Owing to a well organised defence by Edouard Carmignac’s team, Talandracas, with Guillermo Terrera as their best player during the final, won a well-deserved 2010 Gold Cup championship.

Polo in Deauville constitutes an unavoidable date for all sport lovers, competition fans and European elegance. Created in 1907 by Baron Robert de Rothschild, Joubert Captain and Duche Guiche, Deauville tournament celebrates every year in August, the Gold Cup. This event represents one

of the most important polo tournaments of the world together with the Silver Cup and the Bronze Cup â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all three cups played at the same time. Despite the rain, polo was back even stronger, and during the first game of the tournament, the home team defeated Citron by 8-4.

On the second day, Hecla played against Mungo without knowing that they would both meet again for the final game. That windy afternoon, while the shiny sun tried to appear from time to time, Mungo was clearly superior and with the help of Brieuc Rigaux in position two, the team managed win 13-9.

Games came one after another and once the qualifying stage had finished, the same two teams played the final match of the Bronze Cup 2010. It was an intense game in which Fredericka Dodge Tellier and Sandrine Gontier, the two women of Hecla polo Team formation, stood out from the rest. The two female players both handicapped at 0 goals gave all their spirit to accompany Jerome Anier and Edouard Pan (both handicapped at 3 goals) and so they managed to impose their game despite Thibault Guillermin attempts to control MungoÂ´s defensive area. The final score was 9-8 and the victorious Hecla Polo Team mounted the podium with the Brronze Cup in their hands.

St. Tropez - International Cup

St. Tropez continues Wasabi Polo Team was the winner of the 2010 edition of the most important tournament of Haras de Gassin, defeating St. Tropez 10-6. Once again polo was welcomed in one of the most beautiful seaside resorts in Europe. On this occasion, eight 15 goal teams took part over 10 days of the traditional International Polo Cup of St. Tropez. Before the action started, in the city streets, it was time for the traditional annual polo parade which invited spectators to enjoy and take pictures at

the rhythm of the music and the steps of the horses. After the qualifying matches, four teams reached semi-finals and in the first game, St. Tropez Polo Team overcame Sezz by just half goal, winning the match by 10 to 9 Â˝ . On the other side Wasabi defeated La Locura 13-9 and got the pass to the final match.

During the second period Wasabi managed to tighten the plays so as to stop St Tropez polo Team creating dangerous plays and widening the 4-1 advantage got by Wellington. Wasabi was now enjoying the necessary advantage to feel relaxed during the rest of the game but, minutes later St. Tropez would try unsuccessfully to tighten the gap leaving some defensive areas free which let Karen BrinkÂ´s team to reach a difference of 6-2 by the end of the third chukka. In the next period both Guillermo Wellington and Pablo Llorente scored and Wasabi was then leading the board even with a greater advantage. The third place was held by La Locura after defeating Dezz Polo Team by 7-6 ½. The winning team was awarded with a trophy on the St. Tropez podium as well. Aside from polo, there was time also to enjoy of another great celebration. On the night prior to the final match, the Argentine Promotion Institute (Instituto Argentino de Promoción) granted more than 300 VIP guests -including players and sponsors of the championship- a dinner at the Club House of St. Tropez. End of story for the most important trophy played in St. Tropez, home of a team that will have some news regarding the schedule of next year and, most of all, a team that promises even better future polo seasons on the idyllic Cote D’Azur.

Renowned worldwide for holding the most important snow polo tournament in the world, St. Moritz hosted another important tournament, only this time in summer. After 14 years, the first edition of the St. Moritz Arena Polo Cup took place with the participation of three teams up to 8 goals. Report by Federico Levy. Photos by Ana Clara Cozzi.

It is the highest mountain metropolis in Switzerland and during the winter it is a skiersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; paradise. This city is also famous for having the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest ski school, founded in 1927. There is an air of wealth and refinement, and the lavish lifestyle of its inhabitants and visitors is the reason why the most famous stores in the world have a presence, as well as the most

prestigious hotels and Royal Service restaurants. Being in St. Moritz is unbeatable, and if any polo fan thinks about this town, without a doubt what comes to mind is the frozen lake and the snow polo tournament which has been played here for 26 years. During the summer, St. Moritz has a different approach and the Engadine Valley becomes a magnificent starting

point for hikers of all levels. Colourful strolls can be taken nearby the towns along and high up on the mountainside, where visitors can enjoy life outdoors. As if that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough, summer polo has returned to St. Moritz and after 14 years, the St. Moritz Arena Polo Cup took place. The tournament, which featured

three teams up to 8 goals, was played on two sand fields, built alongside the Samedan airport. The club is planning to create another two fields to regulation dimensions, in order to organise a season that enables everybody to enjoy this sport not only in winter as usual, but also in summer. In a three-day competition, three teams played among each other and added up points. After all the matches concluded, Trorviglia Truffle Knights Polo Team, with Philipp Mader, Martin Riglos and Bert Poeckes, was the winning team, after achieving three triumphs and two ties. Kempinski and Peach Property Group shared second place. In addition, another game was played between two teams, St. Moritz and Peach Property Polo Team, with two women and one man in each lineup and the match was tied at 2-2. After a successful first edition of the tournament, St. Moritz promises more action during the summer polo season.

Thomas Wolfensberger (CEO Peach Property Group) “I’m very happy the tournament was a success, because it was my first time as an organizer, and it was very important to me. Everything panned out smoothly. The idea arose when I travelled to the United States, and I liked it very much. Then, we built two beautiful arena fields here. And by next year, we will have built two more. We want to promote polo during summer in St. Moritz. After this tournament, I’m planning on going to Argentina in early November. Last February, I was there for three weeks, and then I travelled to Zurich to play a couple of tournaments. Now, I want to play more polo and organise this venue once again!!!” Heinz Reber (CEO Black River Management Group) “Actually, it is the first time we’ve managed to organise an arena cup of this kind, which marks the first time in 14 years that summer polo is being played in St. Moritz. Our plans are to expand polo in this sense, to attract more tourism and the media. We need infrastructure, so we’re currently dealing with the authorities in order to get 63

the permission required to set up the necessary infrastructure in order to organise this polo event in summer in St. Moritz. As regards snow polo, the news at present is that we’re struggling with financial, structural and safety issues with our partners… We’re currently working on all these things, and I hope that by the end of this month our traffic lights change from yellow to green. By early October we will make an announcement regarding the way in which polo will take place on the frozen lake in St. Moritz. We still don’t know if it will be Formula 1 Polo on the frozen lake in St. Moritz. We’ll see if we can accomplish that by 2011, but we already have plans for 2012. We’re positive we’ll have all these things sorted out. Lots of things have changed, partners have changed, and we are very positive about the future. We plan the whole organisation of the event around 18 months before the tournament, because it’s necessary so that everything is all set up, the infrastructure, everything. We have had a positive feedback and we’d love to have snow polo back, perhaps with a higher level. We may think about another alternative, and we’ll see what we can do on the frozen lake in St. Moritz.”

Triumph for Stefano Marsaglia’s team After the second championship of Gstaad Palace, the Gold Cup had a new champion team that with help from Marcos Heguy, managed to obtain the first place in the tournament that celebrated its fifteenth anniversary. During winter season, and aside from St. Moritz, Gstaad is one of the most visited tourist centers of Switzerland. In summer, the green hills and the ideal climate of this beautiful place invites visitors to enjoy long walks along the town and excellent panoramic views. Gstaad is a town located in the Berna canton. The place, surrounded by little rivers and green mountains, has meant a date and a home for Polo for the last 15 years, when the first Gold Cup took place.

This year, four of 18 goal teams participated of the tournament over four days. By the end of the first day, and after several evenly matched games defined by a mere goal of difference, the usual parade along the street took place. A Swiss band played its music while opening the way along the “promenade”. The beats of the drums sounded in time with the carriages and the steps of the team’s horses parading before the eager audience that were clapping, waving and photographing them.

The next day the VIP tent opened its doors for the traditional lunch for welcomed special guests before the teams head out onto the fields and people are ready to enjoy a complete polo day. At that moment the second day of the Gstaad Golden Cup tournament was officially inaugurated. Once again polo has shown why this tournament is part of the World Polo Tour, in the Challenge category of the world ranking. Together with players like Marcos Heguy, Milo Fernandez Araujo,

Alejandro Agote, Federico Bachman and the Mendez brothers a good game was assured and, both Bank Baring, Stirdza and Hublot Team reached the final. The first chukkas were very even; teams did not manage to mark a great difference in the scoreboard thanks to the defensive plays of Francisco and Eduardo Mendez who, together with Julio Coria and Gualterio Giori knew how to control approaches from the rivals. The advantage on the scoreboard was just set during the additional chukka with Marcos Heguy´s golden goal, who had already scored six times in the final match. It was then that Bank Baring Brothers Sturdza team defeated Hublot by 9-8 and obtained the Hublot Polo Golden Cup.

It was an intense game where the good performance of the Argentinean Pablo Jauretche stood out and was awarded MVP Professional. After the award ceremony, the amateur Gualterio Giori got his trophy as Best Amateur Player of the tournament, and the 11 year old mare named Chachacha was awarded best playing pony of the final match. Before the final game, Star Design had defeated Gstaad by 8 to 6,5 and reached the third place of the tournament. Milo Fernandez Araujo was in charge of the formation of the team and managed an excellent game between Federico Bachman and Agustin Fernandez who, together with Phillip Maeder, paved the way for the team´s victory.

“We are really happy for having been able to offer the audience a good high level game in Gstaad”, said Pierre Genecand, president of the tournament. “I would also like to thank every sponsor, partner, collaborator and people involved in the organization of this great event, and I just hope this tournament has the same success next year as well”, he added. Gstaad celebrated a new edition of its traditional Gold Cup. After two years of being winners with Gstaad Palace team, this year it was time for a new champion that proposes even more competitiveness for next season. Gstaad has it all; perfect views, good climate and, for the last fifteen years, the elegance and luxury that surrounds this wonderful sport: Polo.

Ibiza - Beach Polo

A Celebration of polo in Ibiza PQ International was present at the first Beach Polo Tournament played on Spanish sands. The 1st Ibiza Beach Polo Cup proved that polo and fun are a perfect mix. But when the time comes to seek a place the offers good weather, music, fun and parties, Ibiza is the place to go. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea with a coastline stretching over 200 kilometres, the island held the first Beach Polo Tournament played in Spain. With 4 Polo Management’s organisation, the Ibiza Beach Polo Cup took place on the field belonging to the Fiesta Hotel Group at Playa d´en Bossa over four days, featuring six 12-goal line-ups showing an excellent level of polo on Iberian beaches. Of course, polo was the main focus of attention throughout those days in Ibiza, but after the qualifying stage that allowed Ghantoot and Madrigal to make it through to the Ibiza Island Football star Gabriel Omar Batistuta Cup final, later be won by Ghantoot

6-4, and after Pacha and Scapa played the Jaeger-LeCoultre Cup final, without a doubt the grand fashion show was one of the attractions of the tournament. The whole movement of personalities taking place in the VIP Tent, planned for 400 people but which exceeded 700 on the day of the final, added even more glamour to this polo event, with Spanish and other international figures such as Sete Gibernau, Loles León and the presence of the Pacha Club Go-Go Girls who were in charge of helping at the tournament prize-giving.

The Final After becoming the best teams of the qualifying stage and remaining unbeaten in each of their presentations, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Sa Talaia Polo Team met on the field to play the final. The team representing the luxury watch brand, with the special participation of Argentine Gabriel Batistuta, former football player for several European teams as well as a polo lover, had a better start than Sa Talaia Polo Team and took a 2-0 lead in the first chukka, owing to goals scored by Batistuta

and Juan José Brane. With the necessary defensive strength to maintain their lead during the second period and thanks to goals scored by Horacio Laprida Jr. and Brané on two occasions, Jaeger-LeCoultre took a clear 5-2 lead, after Raignar Meitnem and Rukie Baillieu had reduced the difference for Sa Talaia. In the third chukka, the match became very even and after another two goals scored by Baillieu and one by Meitnem they tied the game at 5-5 towards the end of the period, and once they reached the last chukka, with

Interview with Gabriel Iglesias from 4 Polo Management How much did it cost to organise such an event in Ibiza? We know nothing is easy. It was crazy, more expensive than we thought it would be. We couldn’t have it on the date we had planned, as there were polo tournaments going on all over the world -Sotogrande, Paris, and even in England, so we couldn’t find any horses. But we finally managed. We even found good-quality horses.

Did it go beyond your expectations? Honestly, it was twice as better than we expected. The tournament began on Wednesday. Here in Ibiza, it rains once in summer… and we had 20mm on Monday! I was pretty worried at first, but I later understood that we were watering the field. Just image, we had put down 400 tons of sand, almost 50 trucks. As regards the matches, several games ended in a tie. The final match went into overtime. How many people attended this event? We believe there were almost 4,000 people.

What about next year? I have already signed an agreement with the Hotel Fiesta Group, very reliable people. Besides, here in Ibiza they all loved it. There are great expectations.

Tell us about your company and your next event. 4 Polo Management promotes polo. I began representing players, and I now have new players and also promote events. At present, we’re working on a couple, probably one in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

How did Gabriel Batistuta come? We became very good friends through Martín Valent and Adolfo Cambiaso. I asked him to come and play, and he never doubted. “I will be there”, he said, and he came.

Towards the end of the game, Juan José Brané and Horacio Laprida Jr. scored a goal each which allowed them reach a 7-7 tie, and by then the final countdown had begun. First, Baillieu scored a goal for Sa Talaia, though Jaeger-LeCoultre rapidly tied the match after another goal scored by Brané, and with the game tied at 8-8 they went into overtime. It was then when Horacio Laprida Jr. scored the victory goal, and thus Jaeger-LeCoultre Polo Team secured the first Ibiza Beach Polo Cup title.

Pablo MacDonough the new #2 By Alejandra Ocampos Once the most important European tournaments had finished, Adolfo Cambiasso, the undoubtedly man of the year, continued his way to United States of America. After his recently success in England, Adolfo played for the first time in Santa Barabara, California, with Lucchese Polo Team. His excellent performance added a new trophy to his already long list of conquests after winning the Californian Triple Crown (played in Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club), the USPA America Cup and the Pacific Coast Open. The last two tournaments, which score for the ranking, let the best player of the world to keep his place at the top of the ranking. With polo back in Argentina on the one hand, and with Cambiasso´s absence from

the two big tournaments of the season (the Abierto del Jockey Club and the Abierto de Tortugas) on the other hand, the ranking underwent important changes. Pablo MacDonough was the winner of Jockey Club and Tortugas, leading La Irenita and Ellerstina teams respectively. After those victories he managed to place himself in the second position of the ranking after obtaining 1202 point. He positioned himself right below Adolfo Cambiasso who has 1357 point. Facundo Pieres (1186 pts), Gonzalo Pieres Jr (1093 pts) and Juan Martin Nero (1093 pts) obtained the 3º, 4º and 5º ranking position. The 6º place was achieved by the young and talented Hilario Ulloa who has reached several positions in the top ten after his

recently victory in the Abierto del Jockey Club, where he played for La Irenita team. Finally, Eduardo Novillo Astrada was 7º ; David Stirling 8º ; Lucas Monteverde was placed 9º and Victor Vargas 10º, the last being the only amateur player in the general top ten. The World Polo Tour has entered the home straight. The ball is already rolling and waiting for the most important polo date: The Argentino Abierto de Polo. Time is near and the international polo ranking is ready to award the best players of the year.

Heading along the Ezeiza-Cañuelas motorway, on a cold Saturday morning accompanied by persistent rain, which complicated things during the entire week… Beyond the merciless weather, this trip was due to an exceedingly important reason – to go directly to Cañuelas, to La Dolfina, to see Adolfo Cambiaso, the best polo player in the world and a record man who, in 2010, managed to achieve something that very few or maybe none at all have been able to accomplish: to win each and every tournament he has played abroad throughout the year, totalling nine consecutive tournaments, if we also include the Argentine Palermo Open, in December 2009. Anyhow, an overall and absolute record… Very relaxed, and just back from Santa Barbara, about to become a father for the third time, Adolfo Cambiaso agreed to give PoloLine an exclusive interview, in which he spoke

with it, we made it through to the final and we won. By the time we reached the Gold Cup, we were doing better and we ended up winning the US Open, which was what we were aiming at. In England, you generally prepare to win one of the two tournaments. We won the Queen’s Cup and, in a way, we were already glad; and more so when we won the Gold Cup… And, well, I then arrived in California and everything was going our way and we won everything we played… It was amazing, all the tournaments I played. Furthermore, I would even dare to say that in the United States, the Pacific Coast Open is almost as important as the US Open. For them, after the US Open, comes the Pacific Coast Open.

It has been an amazing year for you… when the Open Tournament ended, did you think it was going to pan out the way it did, that you were going to win every tournament you played? No, I honestly didn’t, it just gradually happened. We played the first cup in the United States (CV Whitney Cup) to see how our team was doing and how our good horses were performing. We gradually managed to get away 86

But, all in all, I had a good time. I travelled with my vet and a couple of friends. How much value to you place on the tournaments you win outside Argentina? A lot! Over and above the fact that you win them for personal matters, I like winning tournaments no matter whom I play with or where I play. I don’t win them to have more or less work. I win tournaments because I enjoy playing them and I also enjoy winning them. In my opinion, there are four tournaments which are the most interesting of the lot. I always aim at the US Open, the Queen’s Cup, the Gold Cup and the Palermo Open. And, in August, there is always a very important tournament, be it the Sotogrande Gold Cup, the Deauville Gold Cup or the Pacific Coast Open. Are you aware that at this moment you are doing things that no other player has ever done before, that today you are the best polo player in the world? No… I don’t quite realize. But I can assure you that I took a look at what I won abroad this year, and this will never ever happen to me again, I mean, winning every tournament I have played. There have been times when I have won quite a lot, but not everything: the Triple Crown Championship in Palm Beach, after all I had played in England, and then finally in California. I think that something like this will never ever happen to me again. How did your partnership with Pablo work in England? Spectacularly, we got along right away. Did you bring Pablo to the team? Yes, I always choose the players. With the exception of Santa Barbara where I was invited, I choose the players. In Santa Barbara, the exception was 5-goal player, Jason Crowder, whom I chose. As regards Jason Crowder, he was the MVP in the Pacific Coast Open final. There are those who say that you made him MVP… The thing is you have to get them going. Many criticize me because they say I am individualistic, but the truth is that I cannot make a team work on my own. All teams that have played with me have worked fine. It have worked fine with Pablo, with Hilario, with Julio Arellano, with Lolo at the time… we made up good combinations with all of them. Wherever I go, I make up the team, 100% of it. How

2 or 3-goal player, Francisco Vismara, in England? I made up the basic part of the team with Pablo, and based on that, I chose a good 2-goaler. Pablo and I made it work. Francisco travelled to Córdoba to try out for the team, and told me that he had a handicap in England. He played the tournament I organise every year on my farm, and I like him. So I told him to go to England. And as the matches went by, he gradually gained confidence.

How did you end up playing in Santa Barbara? You had never been there before. Andrés Weisz invited me, with John Muse, a new patron who has been growing a great deal. I had just sent all my horses there from Palm Beach. After the Palm Beach season, I had arranged to play in Santa Barbara and the truth is that it was very good. I still don’t know whether I’ll be returning next year, because it dragged on for too long after having played in England as well. My decision to return next year depends on the way I feel at that moment. I have been invited, but I still have to see if I’m up for it. This year, I travelled without my family, so it wasn’t that easy either.

about it that much. I arrived a few days ago from California. I was very involved with this matter, so little by little I will arrange everything. But we are doing fine. We’ll see how we arrange the team with Pelón and, obviously, our goal is to win the Open Championship.

The truth is that right now I am thinking more about my wife and the moment when she goes into labour. I won’t be playing the Tortugas Open. Let’s see… Tortugas appears on La Dolfina’s debit side. You’ve never won this tournament… I don’t want to take the credit away from the Tortugas Open, but… I have already won it. In my case, I must either chose Tortugas or chose to work, and I have chosen to work. Besides, I need a certain mental break, to be with my family, to relax, to charge my batteries and get in shape while I play the Hurlingham Open in order to later face up to Palermo, which continues to be the goal. When you’re abroad, you’re a professional and it’s your job. When you’re getting paid for something, you have to give it your all. It is my way of understanding it. In Argentina, I play for the love of the sport, and when you’ve been playing such a long season, for me, playing Tortugas, although I don’t find it boring, on the contrary, I enjoy it, is as if I had to choose. So my decision was to travel to the United States in August and not play the Tortugas Open.

Why Pelón Stirling? Well, firstly because it’s already been three or four years since he joined La Dolfina, his horses are here; an important point, we’re friends. And secondly because he is a great player, who has gradually grown as he showed us last year. He has the ability to play anywhere, not only in Argentina but also abroad. What will Pelón Stirling contribute to La Dolfina? I think it is difficult to compare… Pelón is a dynamic player. He’s fast, a player with a lot of stick-and-ball experience. We’ll see how we arrange the team. It’s not that he makes us better but he will be joining us, so we’ll continue to win well. How

It’s normal for them to be surprised. I can understand it, but I am not surprised because there are constant changes in my teams abroad. I play with a team, they incorporate a player, so I no longer play with that team, and we have to make changes. For me, it’s normal. What I can guarantee is that Lolo and I have a long-lasting friendship, we’re like brothers, and we have spoken face to face. These are just stages in life. We must move on. Life is made up of stages. Perhaps, I will have to go through another stage later… such is life. And how did Lolo take this change? He took it perfectly, because he is going to make up another team. He will be playing with Lucas, and probably with Hilario, or with whomever he has fun… It may be Nachi, Sebastián… he will have a very competitive team. Perhaps it will be La Dolfina II or La Dolfina B, I don’t know. We’ll see, but in order to know that, you will have to ask him. I do know he will be playing. Will La Dolfina 2011 be some sort of a dream team? I don’t know. At present, Ellerstina can be a dream team… Do you bring new horses from abroad? Yes, I always do, but we need to see what they are like, how they play. I brought four or five ponies, and now we have to wait and see how they perform on the field. There is one named “Falta Envido” that has already played here and is a very good horse, and then there’s another one named Jana, which I also like. But until they play on the field, you can never know. my life as a polo player, together with Lolo, which is coming to an end. So, after playing the Open Tournament for 15 or 16 years together, and achieving everything we have achieved, there comes a time when he needs a certain motivation, and I need another type of motivation, so we split up in order to move on. There are changes in each one’s motivations and nothing else. There is no mystery nor is there any strange thing around it.

Who are in charge of your ponies in Argentina when you are abroad? In Argentina, “el Flaco Valent” is charge together with a work team. And during the Argentine season, my groom in England travels here in early August. And there’s another groom who travelled before to the United States to prepare my horses over there.

Why did you choose Juan Martín and Pablo to join La Dolfina? Actually, Juan Martín was the first to join the team. I had already invited him before he started playing for Chapaleufú, but at that time he couldn’t because he was with Marcos, who introduced him to high goal, and he felt as though he couldn’t leave him. But the truth is that I invited Juan Martín a long time ago, even before Chapaleufú did so. But it didn’t turn out. We have always had a great relationship, so when I found out that he was leaving Ellerstina, I gave him a call and it was a done deal. Later on, Pablo joined us, because we played very well together in England and we got along very well. I thought it was only logical that I went in one direction with Pelón, and Lolo and Lucas went in another direction. That’s all, there’s no big mystery.

As regards “La Dolfina Noruega”, the BPP in the Pacific Coast Open, will you be playing her here or did she stay back in the US? No, Noruega is over there. She was also the BPP in the US Open, in 2007. To

conclude, what are your expectations for the

Argentine

season?

To win the Palermo Open and, honestly, not much more than that. I am very happy with what I have achieved, but I am also surprised, because mentally-speaking it requires much more effort than most people think. Many believe that because I’m there, it’s easy for me to win, but that’s not so. You need to be mentally prepared. There are lots of things that are not easy. This is why I’m telling you that it is difficult to achieve what I have achieved… 89

UK Season - The Duke of Wellington Trophy

Santa Rita win the Duke of Wellington Trophy A French patron’s team win this trophy named after the famous English General who defeated Napoleon. Tournament report by Iain Forbes-Cockell (“The Major”).

This 12 goal tournament is played at Guards Polo Club during the first two weeks of August. Eight teams entered this year and they were split into two groups of four, each playing two league matches across the group, followed by semi-finals and finals. In Group 1, Mei Kwei Lu had a 5-2 win over Northchurch and a second win, 7-6 over Equator to win the group and qualify for the semi-finals. Ithaca had a win over Equator but then lost to Northchurch and as a result of that match, Northchurch were the second semi-final qualifier from the group.

In Group 2, Regal started strongly with a 9-5 win over The First Group and subsequently got a second win over Shalimar to top the group and progress. Santa Rita lost by a ½ goal to Shalimar but then beat The First Group 10-5 and thus qualified for the main semi-final. Santa Rita beta Mei Kwei Lu 6-4 in the first semi-final and Regal had a 7-6 win over Northchurch in the second semi-final. In the subsidiary semi-finals, The First Group had a 6-5 win over Ithaca and Shalimar beat Equator.

Manuel Plaza scored from close range to pull a goal back for Shalimar, 5½-3. Another Shalimar goal pulled them up to 5½-4. Vieri Antinori then scored from a long range shot, to close to 5½-5. A backhander from Regal’s George Meyrick was picked up by Max Charlton who ran to score on one his favourite ponies, Athena, a dark grey mare known as Spotty, 0-1. A break was made by Santa Rita’s Oli Hipwood who scored a field goal, 1-1. Max Charlton needed some brief medical treatment and remounted. Max then had a run but a foul occurred and from a spot hit the ball was passed to Marcos Araya who scored for Santa Rita just as the bell rang, 2-1. In the second chukka there was some close marking and a number of unsuccessful attacks by both teams before Marcos Araya scored a field goal in the sixth minute, 3-1. A Penalty 4 was missed by Marcos Araya and then Leroux Hendricks went on the attack but Oli Hipwood managed to get the

ball and start another Santa Rita attack as the bell went for halftime. Max Charlton received a pass and ran half the length of the field to score, 3-2. A Penalty 4 was well struck high in the air by Oli Hipwood but just blown wide by the wind. Then Santa Rita picked the ball up after the hit out and Antonio Manzorro scored a field goal, 4-2. In a subsequent attack, Oli Hipwood's shot hit the post. Shortly after, Regal’s patron Raph Singh struck a great shot from 50 yards out to score, 4-3. A Penalty 2 was awarded to Regal and Leroux Hendricks scored to level at 4-4. Yet again there was over half a chukka of close play before Santa Rita’s Antonio Manzorro leapt onto a backhand pass and took a couple of tap shots to score and take the lead, 5-4 with just two minutes to go. A Penalty 4 scored by Leroux levelled the scores at 5-5 with a minute to go. Then a pass by Oli Hipwood up to Santa Rita’s patron, Francois Le Barazer, with only seconds to go was put through the goal by Francois, to give Santa Rita a 6-5 win.

Six teams entered this year and were placed in two leagues of three teams. Each team would play two league matches with the top two teams from each league then playing semi-finals and the semi- final winners playing the final for the Duke of Cornwall Trophy. The third teams in each league would play the subsidiary final for the Blacklocks Trophy.

League matches League One started with Chris Mathias’ Clarita White taking on Tony Gerrard’s Montana and after a very close match Montana grabbed an 8-7 win. Karan Thapar’s Aravali were Montana’s next opponents and yet another tight match ensued. However, it was Aravali who got a 6-5 win over Montana. Aravali’s second match was

against Clarita White and, having beaten Montana, who had beaten Clarita White in their first league match, Aravali could have perhaps thought that they were in with a good chance of getting their second win. Clarita White were up for the challenge and in the third close match in this league, it was Clarita White who got a 5-4 win over Aravali. Thus, each team in League

One had won one match and lost one match. They all had zero net goals, so the decision on league order went to gross goals. Montana with 13 gross goals were first, Clarita White, with 12 gross goals were second, so both qualified for the semi-finals. Aravali went forward to the subsidiary final. League Two’s first match was Dr Amin Badr el Din’s Golden Falcons against Simon Holley’s Asprey London. Asprey dominated this match, with experienced 6 goaler Chris Hyde in his usual great form, both as a tactician and penalty taker, being well backed up by 5 goaler (but formerly a 6 goaler) James Harper and Juan Cruz Guevara, who was promoted to 6 goals at the end of season handicap changes. Asprey got a significant 8-3 win. Asprey’s second league match was against Clare Mathias’ Clarita Pink. Despite the efforts of New Zealand international player Tommy “the ice-man” Wilson, Asprey were again too strong and ran out 9-5 winners, thus qualifying top of their league for a semi-final place. Clarita Pink’s next match was against Golden Falcons and after a much closer match, where both teams played better than they did against Asprey, it was Clarita Pink that got a 7-6 win and earned themselves the other semi-final place.

Semi-finals Montana played Clarita Pink in the first semi-final and Montana earned their place in the final by getting a 7-6 win. In the other semi-final, Asprey continued their good form and earned their place in the final with an 8-4 win over a Clarita White team who just didn’t seem to get the breaks they normally get.

The Duke of Cornwall Trophy Final: Montana v Asprey London

An attack by Chris Hyde was turned by Santi de Estrada (substituting for the injured Nacho Gonzalez) but then Asprey got a Penalty 5B. Chris Hyde struck it well, however the shot was wide. Another attack by Asprey resulted in a goal shot that was just wide. Santi de Estrada got hold of the ball, beat his marker and ran half the length of the field to score, 1-0. Michel del Carril took the ball

forward, closely shadowed by Juanchi Guevara and then James Harper stole the ball and ran half the field to level the scores at 1-1, shortly before the end of the first chukka. In the second chukka, an attack by Chris Hyde resulted in a Penalty 2 which he scored, 1-2. A neat backhand pass from Juanchi Guevara found Chris, who then left the ball for James Harper to strike but his shot went wide. From the hit out James got the ball and struck a well aimed shot to score, 1-3. Later in the chukka, Montanaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marcos Araya broke from a melee and went on to score, 2-3 just on halftime.

Another Asprey attack developed and James Harper's under the neck shot was just wide of the right goalpost. A Montana attack was under way as the bell went for chukka. An attack by Montana led to a Penalty 4 but it was struck wide. A number of attacks by both sides were well defended then Santi de Estrada got the ball, passed to Marcos Araya who slipped away to score, 3-4. Straight from the lineout James Harper got the ball and ran to score and re-establish a two goal gap,

3-5. However, it was short-lived as Santi de Estrada got the ball from the lineout and scored, 4-5 seconds before the bell for the end of the match. Aravali v Golden Falcons

In the first chukka, a run by Oli Hipwood was stopped just before his goal shot. Following that an attack by Golden Falcons resulted in a Penalty 3, scored by Pepe Araya, 0-1. Another run by Oli Hipwood ended in a missed shot. A good play by Pepe Araya led to a second goal, 0-2. Then a Penalty 2 was missed by Oli and the whistle went at the end of the chukka for a penalty to Golden Falcons. Not a good start for Aravali. However, the penalty for Golden Falcons was missed and Oli Hipwood got the ball and ran with it then passed to Karan Thapar who scored, 1-2. Next, there was a good pick up in the air by Oli Hipwood, who then hit a great pass up to Karan who struck the ball well to level the scores at 2-2. Another Aravali run ended with Jonny Good just missing goal with a nearside backhander under the tail. Oli Hipwood needed some medical treatment after a slow fall where his nose was cut, but soon he re-mounted. From the throw in Howard Hipwood got the ball and had a great run to score, 3-2, shortly before halftime. Aravali, seemed to have found their rhythm in that second chukka and just edged into a lead. A good long shot from Guillermo Cuitino to goal was just tapped through by Franco Gai, 3-3. A brilliant run more than half the length of the field ended with a shot to score from 60 yards out by Jonny Good, 4-3. A hit up field by Howard was turned by Guille, who then made a great pass for Pepe to score, 4-4. Pepe Araya turned

quickly to pick up a backhand pass and stick and balled his way to score, 4-5 just before the end of the third chukka. This match was becoming a real treat to watch with close marking and great shots being struck by both teams. A great shot by Guille up to Pepe looked likely to be another goal but Pepe missed and the ball was backed out of danger and an Aravali attack developed where they got a Penalty 4, which Howard Hipwood scored to level at 5-5. Each side then had a couple of attacks which were turned and with only two minutes to play Franco Gai had a collision with an Aravali Asprey Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chris Hyde

player and came off his pony. After a short spell of medical treatment, he remounted and play continued with a Penalty 2 which was scored by Guille, 5-6. Then a spot hit 5 yards from goal was tapped in by Oli Hipwood to level at 6-6, with under a minute to go. A backhander shot at goal by Jonny was just wide, so the match went to overtime. Jonny Good got the ball from the lineout and passed to Oli Hipwood whose shot was wide. Then in the next play Jonny picked the ball up and scored the winning goal, 7-6 to Aravali. Graham Dennis presented his own Blacklocks Trophy to Aravali.

Silver Spring 1870 toast a successful 2010 English Season

Adolfo Cambiaso, the man who is changing the face of the game, was on formidable form. Cambiaso smashed six goals home in the first chukka to Silver Spring 1870’s two and Dubai looked to be gunning for victory, as the game entered the second chukka. However; JP Clarkin and Adrian Kirby quickly seemed to settle into the game and began to fight back, peppering play with quick turns and thundering shots, racking up the goals and giving Dubai a real run for their money. After a match filled with terrifying pace and precision, Dubai clinched victory with a 13 – 12 victory over Silver Spring 1870. Silver Sping 1870 went on to play Les Lions on July 5th, in a game that was typically fast and pacey, with JP Clarkin and Ruki Baillieu putting in superb performances. It was quickly apparent that when it comes to the polo field, any hope of entente cordiale goes out of the window! After a game which saw both teams putting all their sweat and might into taking the winner’s title, Silver Spring 1870 were able to push onwards, scoring two remarkable goals and leaving the French distinctly unimpressed. The game ended 13- 11 to Silver Spring 1870. As the tournament progressed it looked as though Clarkin, Kirby, Baillieu and Archibald might be in with a real chance of taking the coveted Gold Cup title, However a defeat by Argentinian team El Remanso, spelled the end of Silver Spring 1870’s Gold Cup campaign. The 2010 season has been a busy time for Silver Spring 1870 and players John-Paul Clarkin, Ruki Baillieu, Rob Archibald and Adrian Kirby have achieved notable success in their first season together as the Silver Spring 1870 team. Sponsored by society mixers brand, Silver Spring 1870 which is produced in Kent, Garden of England, the team’s campaign at Cowdray Park this season has seen some of their most remarkable play. This is especially true when considering their impressive success during the Midhurst Town Cup and Gold Cup tournaments. The Midhurst Town Cup in particular saw one of Silver Spring 1870’s proudest moments. On Sunday June 20th, the lawns of beautiful Cowdray Park saw John-Paul Clarkin and team go into battle with the mighty Salkeld, in a match that really was fast and furious. The match was nail biting stuff and the tension seemed to grow with each chukka but ultimately it was the Silver Spring 1870 gents who romped to victory. Silver Spring 1870 triumphed 10 – 9 over Salkeld meaning they could take home the silverware in the form of the exquisite Midhurst Town Cup trophy. Two days after Midhurst, the Silver Spring 1870 team were back in the saddle for the highlight of the Cowdray calendar, the Veuve Cliquot Gold Cup tournament. As the tournament got underway, the Silver Spring 1870 team were pitched against legendary Dubai, renowned for their fast and flawless style of play. Things got off to a tough start for the Silver Spring 1870 chaps as Dubai’s 98

Growth involves work, effort and great ideas. In the second year since the celebration of the agreement between Cirencester Polo Club and Polo de Deauville, which created a joint season with 20 goal teams, The Warwickshire Cup 2010 featured many teams and the absence of rain. The fields of Cirencester Polo Club were not available for qualifying matches due to lack of natural water and irrigation. Instead of them, the well maintained fields of Black Bears Polo Club were kindly offered by Guy Schwarzenbach and used for the event. This situation made it clear that when talking about an important and constantly growing tournament like The Warwickshire Cup, harsh decisions must be made as regards improvements in facilities. In this case a good solution was found and so the

continuity of the oldest English tournament was assured. During qualifying stage four games were played and both Black Bears and Salked got their passes to the first semifinal. Salked was then to obtain victory winning 10-9. In the second semifinal, Emlor defeated El Remanso by 10-8. At this stage the two victorious teams could only think about the final match, which would be played three days later. The final game took place on Aston Down and saw Emlor and Salked in an intense match where Nacho Gonzalez and Joaquin Pittaliga’s teamwork stood out. Both players set the rhythm of their team which had already won the previous edition of the same tournament. Once again, Emlor defeated Salked by 9-6 and obtained the Warwickshire Cup. 101 129

After the end of the tournament, PQ International had an exclusive interview with Spencer McCarthy and Nacho Gonzalez. “The team has been very successful over the last 3 years in the 20 goal, winning the Deauville Gold Cup in France in 2008 where we lost just one game out of 6. In 2009 we won the Warwickshire Cup winning all 5 games and of course retaining it this year again winning all 5 games. Nacho Gonzalez, Joaquin Pittaluga and myself have been playing together for the last 5 years with Emlor, becoming one of the most successful teams in the UK, Winning at 12, 15 18, 20 and 22 goal winning the Prince of Wales this year”; said McCarthy regarding the last tournaments in which the team participated. As regards the last changes of fields during The Warwickshire Cup, he

added: “It was a shame we didn’t play in the Park on the clubs number 1 ground and had to use one of the other grounds due to heavy rain the day before, so the atmosphere was not as good as it should have been playing in the final of 20 goal. It was the toughest match we played in the tournament with some very strong players, not least Jose Donoso who is a very good friend of ours. In 2006 Emlor played in the Warwickshire with both the Donoso brothers where we got to the final losing to the Black Bears by two goals - it was 22 goal then” For next season, Emlor will have to make some changes in the team formation. On the other side Nacho Gonzalez assured that it always means a pleasure to take part in a tournament such as The Warwickshire Cup. “This season it was a lot more pressure on us as we were the holders of the cup. We were very nervous before the final as the team we played was a very tough one, that was the toughest team that we played in the tournament, we were neck and neck all the way through the match”. As to next year Nacho confirmed that they will not be able to play together: “No, as Spencer and Joaquin have both had their handicaps raised we can no longer play together. It was a very happy and successful occasion, however it was also a sad one as myself, Spencer and Joaquin have played together for the last four years, winning many high and medium goal tournaments”.

The magnificent backdrop of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst provided the showcase of one of the most prestigious events in the UK Polo calendar, imaginative, international and most enjoyably British. The HBL Heritage Polo Cup, proudly sponsored by Habib Bank UK was played on the Round Ground over the 7th/8th August weekend and celebrated 125 years since 1885, when young Officers Cadets first played at the Academy and 5 years since the beginning of Heritage Polo in 2006. The Heritage Polo Cup 2010 came to a dream conclusion when the British Army Officers Polo Team, sponsored by EFG International won the final. It was a photograph discovered in the archives that inspired RMAS Polo & Event Manager Barbara Zingg to rediscover polo history, fashion & art. This year, the Black Tie Gala Dinner welcomed 100 guests with a

Pol Roger Champagne Reception at the Grand Entrance of Old College in the presence of the Commandant, Major General Patrick Marriott CBE. In the heart of Old College is the Indian Army Memorial Room, where guests were served a 3 course meal by a light sound of a Jazz Quartet. “Liberty Freedom United Kingdom” showed their new collection of tweed vests and coats in a beautiful Fashion Show accompanied by 8 Officer Cadets, active members of the RMAS Polo Club, who marched on stage to stand on guard, while the models were on the catwalk. Dressed in T.M Lewin Luxury Twill shirt and ‘Help for Heroes’ charity ties, they were each holding up their own short polo mallet. A photographic booklet designed by Images of Polo was handed out to each of the Team Captains to thank them for their support and to commemorate the Cup of past and present by its Founder. Heritage Polo is now a trademark in the UK.

The concept was launched in 2006 with the first encounter between the British Army Officers playing a Pakistan Invitational team, captained by Col Talha Saeed (1), with overseas Officer Cadet Uqbah Hadeed Malik, who celebrated his time at Sandhurst winning the Overseas Sword of Honour in 2006 and has now been promoted to Captain in the Pakistan Army. Each year since then Pakistan has been involved and shown great interest in sponsoring the Cup, this year with HBL (Habib Bank UK). The event has grown in size and has developed into an official recognised polo tournament of 6 Nations, now played at 6 to 8 goal level. T.M Lewin, Official Shirt and Tie supplier since the beginning of Heritage Polo in 2006 under the management of Fiona Vander, agreed to hand out the players kit in the flagship store in Regent Street London, then the players headed on to the

The tournament draw was overseen by HPA Professional Umpire Matt Hind and he invited HBL Cup sponsor Assistant PR Manager Zeeshan Memon to select the teams’ playing schedule. ‘The HBL Pakistan Invitational Polo Team had the privilege of sharing the honour with RMAS of reviving the Polo Club of Sandhurst of 1885, after a gap of 125 years, in 2006. Since then we have played the Cup and have reached the final, having the distinction of winning in 2006. The team consists of players invited from various P o l o Clubs of Pakistan mostly from Lahore Polo and Rawalpindi Polo Club the Team Captain has been Col Talha, who was one of the founding members since the revival of the Cup’ quoted the Counsellor of High Commission Pakistan London. With the humanitarian disaster in Pakistan in that week Sandhurst offered a donation for the flood relief victims. Quote by the Nation London, Friday 13th August 2010 “Expressing their solidarity with flood affected Pakistanis, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst have donated £5000 to ‘Pakistan Relief Fund’. The Commandant Major General Patrick Marriott presented the cheque to prominent Pakistani Bankers Hameed D Habib and Nauman Dar at the prize awarding ceremony at the Polo Club of the Academy on Sunday. “14 million 105

people are facing direct or indirect harm from devastating floods in Pakistan, heavy casualties and damages have been reported from the affected, which are a matter of great concern. We feel pity for them and extend our cooperation in a time of great odds”, he said. Showing gratitude for this goodwill gesture, Mr Nauman Dar, CEO Habib Bank UK, said this sort of co-operation and friendship is a reflection of closer Pakistan –UK relations and we all are thankful for the sentiments of the Cadets. The winners in 2009 were the Royal Pahang of Malaysia Polo Team, with 2 Lt HH Amir Ibrahim Shah, who was commissioned from Sandhurst that year to join forces with his 2 cousins flying in from Malaysia. HRH Crown Prince Abdullah of Pahang, Malaysia kindly donated the remaining 2 ponies of his string in England to the Academy. Each year since 2006, Upender Mehra, tailor and owner of ‘Liberty Freedom United Kingdom’ has manufactured limited edition garments made especially for this event to bring to stage on the Round Ground polo pitch at Sandhurst. The concept is to surprise Lady Players and spectators to view stylish women in competition with a vintage touch. The attention to detail and flair of femininity, the aspect of non modern polo makes this match unique in the world. The concept and designs are made by the Founder of Heritage Polo, Barbara Zingg, who umpires on a side saddle, wearing a habit and top hat on a gelding named ‘Belmondo’, an 8 year old racehorse now playing polo. Creator and Designer Dawn Attkins of Vanilla Rose sponsored the 4 Nations Polo Team and offered limited edition Union Jack Flag cushions to the winning English Ladies. Bespoke handbags with a vintage flair are piece by piece custom made, with unique designs and fabric to underline style and pay tribute to English heritage with Victorian and Edwardian inspiration. Also present was Douglas Simpson of ‘Ascot Top Hats Ltd’ with a selection of army pith helmets, top hats and English country caps.

The Shetland Pony Club was to entertain the little ones by Founder Rosie Gibson-Miller with a small collection of 4 Shetlands to underline the beautiful world of being a child promoting her business with the slogan: Shetland ponies, part of an English Childhood & Small poniesâ&#x20AC;Ś.Big dreams. Toffee, Hector, Prince William and Honeybee were all on show for the admirers big and small. The Club is based in Stoke Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Abernon, Cobham, Surrey. There were plenty of new members and children dressed in heritage clothing to show off English country living of the past. Shetland ponies are the smallest of al the native breeds in the UK, originating from the Shetland Islands up North, standing at between 35 to 40 inches high. Penny Hill Park Hotel & SPA offered a sponsorship rate for all players and guests to a reduced Hotel price for this particular tournament week end. blending in with booked Team shoots and Peter Meade catching the best dressed Lady, Valerie Wagner, wife of Yves Wagner of the Polo Team Luxembourg, addressed as the “Lady in Red”. On Saturday all six teams played to decide the play-offs for Sunday. As there would be three winning teams and three losing teams, the two best winning teams would play the final, the third winning team and the best losing team would play for third and fourth place and the two teams who lost by the most on Saturday would play off for the fifth and sixth place. So on Sunday, guests were welcomed onto the Round Ground from lunchtime on with the introduction of the display of music from the Band and Bugles of The Rifles before the playoffs of the 3rd to 6th place teams. The match for the fifth and sixth placed teams was between Luxembourg and the USA Destinations of Polo Virginia team. Bert Poeckes, a Luxembourg national lives in Switzerland and has put together his own Team this year with Yves Wagner, President of the Polo Club of Luxembourg, established in 2004 and slowly but surely growing in ability. To

strengthen their team, polo professionals Martin Riglos (5) and Oliver Taylor (4) were drafted in but unfortunately did not achieve the breakthrough that they were striving for. The USA Polo Team directed by Team Captain Tripp Donnelly (0) with Alan Adler (0), Adrian Wade (5) and Doug Barnes (2) of Destination of Polo Virginia had two good games under the spell of stars & stripes and in the end the scores were level at 5 - 5. The match for third and fourth place was between the Swiss team and the Pakistan team. EIM Helvetia, the Swiss Team, back for the consecutive 3rd time thanks to the support of Gilles Leraille, who won the Cup in 2008. The Team Sponsor EIM Switzerland was represented during the whole event by Gilles Leraille, a senior Manager at EIM Switzerland and Phillip von Habsburg, Manager of EIM London Office. Polo Park Zurich was established in 1998 by Markus and his wife Irene, hosting the Swiss Open (15 goals) the main event in the Swiss Polo calendar. The Ladies Exhibition Match followed and has become a highlight of the tournament. Victorian, nostalgic & romantic Amazons once again played for friendship and exchange of culture. Giving an opportunity to stage a match wearing clothes similar to those used in Ladies’ Polo at the beginning of this century, the two teams played an Exhibition Match of 3 chukkas before the Final match of the Gentlemen on Sunday. This event is unique in the Polo world and draws on the beauty and elegance of the early days of the Ladies Polo at the beginning of the 20th century. The English Ladies sponsored by ‘Liberty Freedom of the United Kingdom’ challenged a 4 Nations Polo Team, consisting of four Ladies of different countries and background from Switzerland Irene Graeff (0), Pakistan Mahnaz Malik (-1), the USA Allison Robbins (-1) & Dubai U.A.E Cariane Hoffie (0). They played a role as Ambassadors for all lady players, who

compete and enjoy this sport going back to the Mogul times in Persia. Starting with ½ goal handicap for the 4 Nations Vanilla Rose Team, play got off as an exciting start. Alice Gipps showcased a great game focused on the ball paying off with scoring several goals. Aurora Eastwood as ever good horsewoman and star player, now enjoying a +1 handicap, gave excellent passes to create set plays. Charlotte Champion scored the final goal for Liberty Freedom English Ladies to give them a 3-2½ win. The 4 Nations Team raffled together to play for friendship and exchange of culture playing without training to entertain the crowd and participate in what seemed a glorious day for Ladies Polo in the 21st century. Defying the dramatic weather forecast on Saturday, the sun came out in full glory to shine on the EFG International Polo Team of British Army Officers when they took to the field against I4I Dubai Falcons to decide the winners and runners-up. EFG International Team captain was Major Matt Eyre-Brook 9th/12th Lancers (1) and other team members were Officer Cadet Doug White (0), Robert Mehm (1) and Army Association Polo Coach Gaston Devrient (5). Major Matt Eyre-Brook, certainly

great example for all Army polo players, started his career at Sandhurst as an Officer Cadet in 2000 learning how to play polo. Today, he is the proud owner of 7 horses. Under the watchful eye of the Commandant then, Major General Arthur Denaro and the Chairman of the Army Polo Association, Lt Col Simon Ledger, he progressed his skills to join a memorable tour to Jordan. Having joined the 9th/12th Lancers, posted out to Germany and member of the Rhine Army Polo Association in Hohne, the passion for polo saw him represent the Army in several important tournaments, such as the Rundle Cup and others, representing the Combined Services Polo Association (CSPA). He also had the opportunity to go on tour in India, hosted by the 61st Cavalry, the only fully horsed regiment in the world, based in Jaipur. He was a key player and took on the team, along with Gaston Devrient to provide the ultimate firepower for this 7 goal team. Gaston has had a profound effect on Army Players in 2010, proving that he is not only a cunning and skilled player but also a superb coach. He was unrecognisable with his shaven head look, the result of raising £15,000.00, with four other polo players, for a children’s charity at an event at Ascot Park some days before. When put under pressure to

predict a result of the final match he said: “We are definitely not going to lose, they will have to beat us.” Officer Cadet Doug White is in the intermediate term at Sandhurst, voted Best Player twice this season, at 0 goals he is a valuable addition to the team and is a rising star in Army Polo. Robert Mehm comes from Myopia Hunt Club (Boston, USA) one of the oldest Polo Cubs in America. He began polo in 1979 and is currently an active member of Vetey Polo Club, Geneva Switzerland. The Dubai Falcons, who played in T.M Lewin green and white striped shirts & black silk tie, had 5 goal professional player Charlie Muldoon as playmaker and he and his team produced a game of suspense and high quality polo to entertain the crowds of Habib Bank UK and EFG International, as well as the Academy Staff and young Officer Cadets. I4I Polo Team (Potomac Polo Club) and the Dubai Falcons (Desert Palm Polo Club) teamed up to compete under the Name I4I Dubai Falcons. The Dubai Falcons are based out of Desert Palm Polo Club and have successfully competed internationally in multiple tournaments. The Falcons are represented by Patron Saeed Bin Drai and his Polo Manager Nicolas Petracchi. Earlier this year, Saeed’s

team won the prestigious annual winter Cartier Polo World Cup on snow in St. Moritz. Saeed has played a significant role in introducing and promoting the sport at a competitive level and they have had tremendous success as a team. The Potomac Polo Club was established in 1956 and is the oldest Polo Club in the Washington D.C area. Located in Poolesville, MD, it was originally established by the late Joe Muldoon. Today the Potomac Polo Club and School are managed and owned by his children, Charlie Muldoon, Joe Muldoon III and Mary Muldoon. I4I is represented by patron Omid Rajaei and Polo Team Manager Charlie Muldoon. In 2009 following the establishment of I4I Polo, he teamed up with Charlie and together they have played and won multiple regional tournaments at 12 and 18 goal levels. Charlie began playing as a professional in 1990 and achieved 6 goal ranking. In 2001 he won the 26 goal USPA Gold Cup and in 1983 and 1984 he, along with his siblings and father were the first family team in the Untied States to win the 8 goal President’s Cup. In 2003 he turned semi-professional and dropped to 5 goals. Starting with ½ handicap difference for the EFG International British Army Polo Team, this turned out to be a physical contact game, full of skilful manoeuvres, showing great anticipation and team awareness. The British were first to pounce with Officer Cadet White finding the goal twice in the early minutes of the opening chukka with no response from their opposition. In the second chukka Nicholas Petracchi scored for I4I Dubai Falcons but Matt Eyre-Brook responded with a goal after a great run almost the length of the ground, to make the score 3½- 1 at the end of the second chukka. A good team talk at halftime by Charlie Muldoon had the desired effect and in the third chukka, the Dubai team scored from a Penalty 3 and a Penalty 4 by Charlie Muldoon as well as a Nicolas Petracchi goal but the British Army team kept the lead through two great goals by Robert Mehm to put them at 5½-4 up at the end of the third chukka. Another goal by Nicolas Petracchi brought the Dubai team close but a

Penalty 4 struck well by Gaston Devrient, allowed the EFG International British Army team to beat the I4I Dubai Falcons by 6½ - 5. Best Playing Pony was “Aguara” owned and played by Gaston Devrient, who received as a prize a raw hide head collar decorated with yellow roses and blue lilies, trademark of the Heritage Polo Best Playing Pony Award. MVP was Robert Mehm. Sunday was full of entertainment with the Band of the Bugles and

Rifles, the RMAS Staff College Drag Hunt Parade of Hounds with Huntsman Mark Beckett, Sword Guards Gunner Brown and Lance Bombardier Conroy of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery were on horseback to present the Final and also present on guard at the prize giving to round off a lovely summer day of polo of the past and future.

Chairman’s Tournament 2010

Earlier in the 2010 season, the co-patrons of the Mad Dogs polo team, Alan Fall and Alistair Walker, thought it would be a good idea to enter a few of the low goal tournaments at Guards for fun; you know what I mean, it’s what polo used to belike before it got all serious using professionals paid by results with win bonuses. When I say low goal, I mean 2 goal, not 6 or 8 goal, which could easily be mistaken for the 8 or 10 goal level respectively of a few years ago. Both those levels have professional players of 5 or 6 goals riding ponies that are capable of playing up to 15 or 18 goal polo. Gone are the days of having different strings of ponies for different levels of play. The result, most of the time, is that matches are played at a far faster pace now than formerly. Even the 1 and 2 goal professional players have ponies that are capable of playing up to 12 goal level.

So they selected a team of four players. All were on the wrong side of 40 years old and in fact, for the Crawford Cup, the combined ages of the Mad Dogs team came to just over 200 years! Some, rather cheekily, referred to the team as the “Old Dogs”! However, experience told and the Mad Dogs team for that tournament, Major Iain Forbes-Cockell, Simon Holland (playing in place of Alan Fall, who was away on his honeymoon), Ali Walker and Oli Ellis managed to beat The First Group, Gary Shepherd, Anthony Bellm, Ollie Brown and Tristan Pemble, 4-3 in the final, with Oli Ellis scoring the winning goal and starting a trend that, luckily for Mad Dogs, he was able to repeat on several occasions when the team was in a tight spot. It was after their success in the Crawford Cup, that the decision was made to enter the Mad Dogs in the Chairman’s Trophy. 110

The Mad Dogs subsequently played in the Major-General’s Tournament, with some team changes. For that tournament, which was restricted to only amateur players, Mad Dogs comprised Simon Holland, Ali Walker, Alex Brodie and Stefan Sund. Eight teams were entered, half of whom had serving military in their line-ups and the tournament was played over three days. Mad Dogs played the final after two big league match wins and their opponents were Andrew Stimpson’s Warmup team, who had routed the Hackett Army Team 6-0 then got a 5½-5 win against Porto Ronco. Mad Dogs achieved their second 2 goal tournament victory with a 6-5 win. The following weekend was their opportunity to try for their third 2 goal tournament win, in the Chairman’s Trophy. The Chairman’s Trophy is held over the last weekend of the season at

Guards Polo Club. The entry is limited to eight teams, in order to be completed in the three day timeframe and there is an entry fee which includes a table of eight for each team at a black tie dinner held on the Saturday night in the clubhouse. Such is the popularity of this format that it was also used the previous weekend for the MajorGeneral’s Trophy, albeit with no entry fee or dinner, as well as the Polo Manager’s tournament which had four teams entered and was played concurrently with the Chairman’s Trophy over the last weekend. The eight teams were placed in two groups and teams played two matches across the group to decide the line-up for the last day of the tournament. The two group winners would play in the final, the second teams in each group would play the subsidiary final and so on. Each team in the tournament was guaranteed a match on all three days and the last day’s matches were scheduled for the Sunday morning (after the dinner the previous night, so it is a test of stamina as well as polo skills along the lines of work hard, play hard). Group matches Group One winners were Mad Dogs, with Alan Fall back from honeymoon and the remaining three players the same as in the Crawford Cup earlier in the season. The combined ages of the team still managed to be 200 years old! Mad Dogs, had a surprisingly comfortable 8-3 win over Mark Wadhwa’s and Stuart Ditcham’s Black Cats/Merlin on the Friday and a close 5-4 win over Brian Stein’s Ockholt, with a last second goal by Guards’ Polo Manager Oliver Ellis, on the Saturday. Alastair Thomas’s Ali Cats had an 8-7 win over Ockholt, followed by a 5-3 loss to Black Cats/Merlin. However, Ali Cats had a better net goal score than Black Cats/ Merlin and so they were second in Group One. Black Cats/ Merlin were third with Ockholt in fourth place. Group Two winners were the formidable AFB. A member of the AFB team in 2009, John Gunn, was moved up to 0 goals at the end of 2009 but rejoined Clive Reid’s team for this tournament, along with this year’s -1 to 0 goal improver, James Carr and their 2 goal handicap stables manager Juan “Chino” Leiva. In their first match AFB had a 6-3 win over Raph Singh’s Regal and followed that with a 5-4 win over Martin Davison’s 666. Gary Shepherd’s The First Group (TFG) selected Major Iain Forbes-Cockell as a substitute, as Gary had injured his shoulder in the Autumn Nations 12 goal tournament. In their first match, they lost 4-5 to 666, after an outstanding Penalty 3 interception by Charlie Wooldridge, which he followed with a run the entire length of the field flat out, to score the winning goal. The First Group then had a 6-3 win over Regal. The First Group had a better net goal score than 666, so they qualified second, with 666 third and Regal fourth.

The Final After an extremely good evening in the clubhouse, there were a few players rather the worse for wear on the Sunday morning for the final matches of the tournament. Amongst those were the Mad Dogs team’s “The Major”, who had been concerned about his energy level, having played twice per day (for Mad Dogs and substituting in TFG) on both Friday and Saturday. His alarm, set for 9am, wasn’t heard and at 10am,

smartly turned out, sticks all lined up in their team tent and warming up their ponies, after which they had a team photo. Not to be outdone, the Mad Dogs then decided to have a team photo at 1055 and then took to the field. Rather against the run of play, Mad Dogs managed to score first and it was the only score in a close marking first chukka as the two teams tried to work out how to beat each other. In the second chukka, both teams scored and it was 3-1 to Mad Dogs at halftime. AFB came back after that and by the end of the third chukka it was 4-3 to Mad Dogs. The last chukka saw AFB level at 4-4 and again, with only seconds to go, it was Oli Ellis who was able to score the goal that allowed Mad Dogs to win 5-4 and claim their third 2 goal victory of the season. It was Alan Fall who won MVP for the final and

received his prize in the post matches end of season awards ceremony, held after the subsidiary final.

The Subsidiary Final “The Major” both happy but exhausted having won the Chairman’s Trophy final in the Mad Dogs team, then lined up with The First Group (TFG) against Ali Cats for the subsidiary final. TFG had the better of this match, with Alec Banner-Eve combining well with Ollie Brown and Tristan Pemble. Tristan played safely at back, stepping in when needed but allowing Alec and Ollie to make the runs. “The Major” managed to canter around and occasionally hit the ball. Mark Hayden Kellard marshalled his team well after some initial setbacks and the Ali Cats got back to only a one goal deficit by the end of the match. TFG were

5-4 winners and then made their way, along with all the teams who had competed in both the Chairman’s Trophy and the Polo Manager’s Cup, to the presentation area behind the stand on The Queen’s Ground and by the La Martina store at Guards.

The Polo Manager’s Cup Four teams entered the Polo Manager’s Cup. They were in one group and played across the group with the final and subsidiary final being decided by the results of the first two days matches. Andrew Stimpson’s Warmup and Alan Morello’s Los Borrachos won both of their matches, so they played each other in the final. It was Warmup who got a 4-2 victory over Los Borrachos to win the Polo Manager’s Cup. The subsidiary final was between Christian Langaard’s Los Vikingos and Majid Sadjadi’s Maxima. Los Vikingos showed some great form during that match and were 7-4 winners.

Chairman’s Trophy, the Polo Manager’s Cup and end of season awards presentation ceremony Becky Simpson, UK brand manager of La Martina, kindly arranged with Victoria Elsbury-Legg, Assistant Polo Manager at Guards, a marvellous selection of prizes for the teams and Holly Smith to represent her on the day. The prizes were presented to the happy recipients by Sanda Belcher, wife of the Guards Polo Club Chairman, Col. Paul Belcher. Greg Keating, who had enthusiastically commentated many of the matches in this tournament and throughout the season, was Master of Ceremonies. Greg smoothly and efficiently ran through the many awards that were made. Photographs of these awards accompany this article. The tournament was a huge success. It has become extremely popular, is always oversubscribed; hence the additional four teams taking part in the Polo Manager’s Cup. Much laughter and applause accompanied the presentations and it was reminiscent of the joviality at the end of a successful project. Then people drifted away to enjoy lunch and watch the final and subsidiary final of the Autumn Nations 12 goal tournament which took place that afternoon, the final afternoon’s play of the 2010 season.

The estate is being sold by the 4th Viscount Cowdray whose ancestor, Sir Weetman Dickinson Pearson, purchased the 16,500 acre estate in 1909, with the first polo match being played at the House Ground in 1910. Cowdray Park was originally the Keeper’s Lodge of the original deer park and was enlarged after Cowdray House, which is in Midhurst, next to the current world famous grounds, was struck by a fire in 1793. The house was further extended in the 19th century and the army moved in during the Second World War, after which the 3rd Viscount made gradual refurbishments. In 1995 the current Viscount Cowdray carried out a full renovation and refurbishment of the house, gardens and grounds.

The Town & County Championship is a popular 8 goal tournament held at Guards in the first two weeks of August. This year, 10 teams entered and they were placed into one league of 4 teams and one group of 6 teams. Each team played 3 league matches, with semi-finals and subsidiary semifinals for the most successful 8 teams, followed by the respective finals. It was good to see that five new patrons at Guards this year, Gary Shepherd (The First Group), Francois Le Barazer (Santa Rita), Matthew Tooth (Los Dientes), Chris Fagan (Noon Giraffe) and John McGrath (Allegro) had entered teams. In League One, Des Byrne’s Northchurch team started well with an 8-5

win over Allegro and later had a 6-3 win over Alan Fall’s and Ali Walker’s Mad Dogs. However, in their third match they suffered a heavy 9-2 defeat at the hands of Santa Rita, who went on to win all three of their league matches. In Group One, Chris and Clare Mathias’ Clarita, always a tough team to play against, had an 8-6 win over The First Group, an overtime 8-9 loss to Ithaca and then a huge 13-5 win over Noah Silberschmidt’s Polaris, to give them two wins and one loss. The First Group recovered from their early defeat by Clarita to go on and have a 7-6 win over Los Dientes and an 8-7 win over Noon Giraffe, to give them two wins and one loss. Ithaca won Group One with three wins, the first was a 5-4 win 116

over Los Dientes, the second was a 7-6 win over Noon Giraffe and the decider for the winning team of the group was the 9-8 overtime win against Clarita. In the semi-finals, Santa Rita managed a 9-7 win over Clarita while Ithaca got a 7-6 win over Northchurch. In the subsidiary semi-finals, Allegro beat Noon Giraffe 5-4 and The First Group won a high scoring game 10-9 against Los Dientes.

Town & County Final Ithaca vs Santa Rita

Both teams qualified for the final undefeated in the previous stages of the tournament. Early in the first chukka Ithaca were awarded a Penalty 4 but Tommy Wilson’s shot just missed the

goal. Shortly afterwards, Oli Hipwood opened the scoring with a field goal, 0-1. An infringement near the goal resulted in a spot hit from 15 yards being scored by Oli Hipwood, 0-2. A further foul led to a Penalty 4 taken by Oli Hipwood but the hit went wide. Ithaca built an attack with good teamwork and when a Penalty 2 was awarded it was scored by Tommy Wilson just before the bell, 1-2. Oli Hipwood got the second chukka off to a great start for Santa Rita as he pounced on a loose ball and scored a field goal, 1-3. An Ithaca attack was started by Tommy Wilson, who struck the ball up to Yanni Zographos but with the ball going slightly wide of the goal Yanni did a short backhander to

James Leonard who scored, 2-3. Another Ithaca attack straight from the lineout was halted but a foul occurred and the spot hit awarded in the goalmouth was scored by Tommy Wilson to equalise at 3-3. However, as soon as the ball was thrown in, Santa Rita went on the attack and a field goal was scored to put them in the lead again, 3-4. Antonio Manzorro got the ball after a spot hit and ran to score, getting that two goal gap again, 3-5 only seconds before halftime. After a good team talk at halftime, Ithaca made a move to get on terms again and their attack resulted in a Penalty 2 scored by Tommy Wilson, 4-5. A pass from Tommy Wilson reached James Leonard, who pressed forward the attack and then Yanni Zographos scored with a fine shot from 40 yards out for Ithaca to take the lead for the first time in the match, 6-5. In the next minute, a Santa Rita attack was disrupted by a foul and a Penalty 4 was scored by Oli Hipwood to level the scores again, 6-6. In the last minute of the chukka, another Ithaca attack got close to goal when a Penalty 2 was awarded and was scored by Tommy Wilson, 7-6. Santa Rita came back immediately and were pressing forward when the whistle went for a foul at end of the chukka. This chukka had been particularly good for Ithaca, having started it two goals down, they ended it one goal in the lead. That lead was short lived though, as the spot hit from 5 yards, awarded as the previous chukka ended, was scored by Antonio Manzorro to level at 7-7. After the lineout, Ithaca went on the attack again and were awarded a Penalty 4, which was scored by Tommy Wilson, to put Ithaca back into the lead, 8-7. Santa Rita werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t giving up and created another attack, with Oli Hipwood and Antonio Manzorro combining well. A foul occurred as they were moving the ball towards the goal and a spot hit from 2 yards out was scored by Antonio Manzorro, to level the score at 8-8 with only a minute to go. From the lineout Tommy Wilson managed to get the ball and pass it to James Leonard, who knocked the ball forward but was then ridden off and it was Yanni Zographos who scored a field goal from about 30 yards out, only 30 seconds from time to put Ithaca back into a one goal lead at 9-8. There was only just time to throw the ball in before the bell went for the end of the match, with Ithaca as deserving 9-8 winners. In the subsidiary final, Allegro battled well and got a 5-2 win over The First Group.

UK Season - Coworth Park Challenge

This year, the 2010 edition of the Coworth Park Polo Club tournament relied on the participation of Black Bears, Altamira, Golden Falcons and Billingbear, the team that played and achieved the mayor prize. Undoubtedly, this event is an opportunity for the English polo world to keep

connected once the high handicap level tournaments have finished. The final match received both Black Bears and Altamira teams. The audience was witness of an intense game where John-Paul Clarkin´s teamwork stood out. John´s performance proved to be steadier year after year among

20 goals handicap players. The New Zealander player´s performance in the team organization was a definite success. The final game of Victor Ludorum Tournament was not be an easy task for Black Bears since they had to face high level players such as Alberto

However, the black team managed to get victory after defeating the rivals by 9-6 in a match where JP Clarkin stood out as MVP and his Mare (Nina), as Best Playing Pony. The Subsidiary Cup met Billingbear-Lost Boys and Golden Falcons in a game where the second team shown a better performance thanks to Jose Araya and Tomás Ruiz Guiñazu´s teamwork. The Golden Falcons managed to impose their rhythm and achieved victory by a decisive 7-4. A new edition of Victor Ludorum Tournament ended up and proved that, together with Warwickshire Cup, these two events help competitive polo rhythm falling so noticeably and make it possible for polo season to spread out. talent, skill and passion. There were five teams that entered the 19 and under group and another five teams that entered the 15 and under group. Saturday saw the finals of both levels, first up were the 19 and under group Forgather made up of Theo Banner, Tom St Aubyn, Harry Muddle and Mamie Powell went up against Sangres Jovenes consisting of James Hislop, Jamie O’Neill, Alex Jacob and Bryony Taylor. A hard and fast game was always expected but this was furious from the out set. First blood went to Banner with a great little run in, only to have Jacob fire in a Penalty 4, followed by a great run in from the next line out. In the second all was brought level with another Banner knock in but otherwise it was tight end‐to‐end play with many goal line clearances. The third chukka saw a feast of goals, first off a tap in from Taylor followed by a Banner tap in, only to be followed by a long run from Hislop. Not to be outdone, Banner shot one home straight from the lineout with Muddle then knocking in another. Into the last chukka with the scores very close, at both ends there were misses but neither team was giving an inch. Moments from the end Alex Jacob had a Penalty 4, but it was beaten away only to find her right there and knocking it between the posts. Sangres Jovenes had won the cup 6 ½ to 4. A great game to watch and it looked like at least a 2 goal level game. Next up were the 15 and under teams. King Dragons were Cody Jones, Izzy McGregor, Hector Fair and Will Batchelor against Jaeger-LeCoultre with Tommy Beresford, Jack Taylor, Ralph Richardson and Camilla Beresford. This game could have gone either way, tight or open and fast. The spectators were not to be disappointed. King Dragons started with half a goal on handicap. The scoring was opened by Tommy Beresford with a very well struck Penalty 2, but with all the end to end plays it was not long before Batchelor managed to get one back with a well worked goal. The second chukka opened with a spot hit from Tommy Beresford who once again found his mark. McGregor then met a glorious Jones backhand, which she happily ran to goal. With Beresford off the pitch changing ponies, Richardson

had the chance of taking the next Penalty 2, which he blasted through with ease. The third chukka was extraordinary with both teams missing penalties and the King Dragons hitting the post twice. There were no goals in this chukka but there most certainly were some nervous parents; this game could be won or lost in an instant. The fourth chukka started with a Cody Jones spot hit to put them ahead again, but Tommy was having none of it, running out of his own 60 he drilled a glorious goal for the team to go back in front. A well‐struck Penalty 2 from Jones moments later reversed the score, and the crowd could only wonder if they could hang on with two minutes to go. It seemed that their defence would hold until an unfortunate foul was given away. Beresford set himself up with the pressure shot; he drilled it home, the teams never made it back to the middle. Jaeger-LeCoultre had it 5 to 4 ½ in a stunning game of polo. ‘Hyde’ the runners up in the subsidiary final for the 15 and under’s should come in for a special mention as a team to keep a very close eye on in the future playing some outstanding polo 121

Twenty-four teams enjoyed this year’s Polo Festival spreading themselves across the three levels of tournaments. Each tournament was sponsored by a popular brand. Martell Cognac were there to support the 7-10 Goal level, whilst Jeff Thomas of Tally Ho Farm continued his association with the Festival and the placing of his sponsorship behind the 4-8 Goal tournament. The -2 to 2 Goal tournament did not miss a trick as Dimitri Cherbatorev of Ivan the Terrible Russian Vodka lent his support for the teams playing at this level.

During the two week period just fewer than fifty matches were played. Every team was promised at least three matches which subsequently increased as semi-finals and finals were completed. In the -2 to 2 Goal Semi Finals Steve Rigby’s (-2) Rigby & Rigby squeezed out Paul Knights’ (-1) and Jinni Featherstone-Witty’s (-1) Foxy Knights whilst Tom Swerling’s (-1) Ausherra saw victory over Jeremy Pemberton’s (-1) Chinngis. It was two teams from the group of 4 that eased their way onto the Club’s No.1 field for finals day- Clare Hudson’s (-1) and Ben Riordan’s (-1) Kit 4 Kings and Jonathan Munro-Ford’s (-1) and Nadeen Wellard’s (-1) Eagles. Eagles came out on top. Hissam Ali Hyder (5) was not going to be subjected to a repeat performance. He played a brilliant match of polo as penalties were converted, field goals scored which resulted in his three fellow team mates playing with great confidence. Eagles could not sort out the phenomena against them as they finally succumbed to an 8-3 ½ defeat. James Robinson from Martell Cognac was there throughout finals day giving great support for the 7-10 Goal tournament. Four presentation bottles of Martell’s top of the range cognac was waiting to greet the victors. Simon Holley’s (0) Asprey London was out to defend their win from 2009 this time they were pitched against Sara Hale’s (-1) Broadoak. Peter Webb (5) for Broadoak came out of the first line-out like a player possessed leaving Chris Hyde (6) and Jonny Good (5) wondering what to do! Our thanks have to be passed onto Havana Club for providing the rum cocktails “of the summer” at the opening drinks party and for them then taking their excellence to the Cuba themed party on the Saturday. The DRS Technology Indian Cavalry Polo Trophy Played at 2.30pm, a Combined Services Polo Association (CSPA) polo team took on a visiting team from the Republic of South Africa, the Zulus, in the second match of a three match series for The Chapple Cup. The first match in the series was played at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst a few days previously and the visiting Zulus team had earned themselves a win and were thus facing a CSPA side at Tidworth who were out to level the series. That was not to be the case. The match started off evenly enough, with one goal apiece, Don McHardy for the Zulus and Martin Ffrench-Blake for CSPA, after the first chukka. From

Unlike 2009, when spectatorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; enjoyment of the Hackett Rundle Cup day suffered because of torrential rain, this year the weather was fine. It allowed a full programme of entertainment to take place on the Fisher Ground in front of Tedworth House. From noon, music was provided by the Band of HM Royal Marines. During an interlude, there was a horse race in aid of The British Forces Foundation. At 1pm there was a Freefall Parachute Display by a combined team of serving Royal Armoured Corps and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers parachutists. Many spectators settled down to a picnic lunch and enjoyed some sunshine and then watched a Pony Club Exhibition match.

The Hackett Rundle Cup At 4.30pm the main event of the day started. This was the annual Hackett Rundle Cup match between the Royal Navy and the Army. With the matter of Service pride being at stake, this is one match that is taken very seriously by both sides. After the Army’s victory in 2009, the Royal Navy were out for revenge and to assist them in this task, they revealed his year’s secret weapon, Sub Lt Hiro Suzuki, a 2 goal player who has surprised many in Services polo this year. He joined Commodore Richard Mason, formerly a 2 goal player but now playing off 1 goal. Between them, a combination of youthful get-up-and-go and years of experience, they provided the basis of some good team play by The Royal Navy. They got the basics right, marking the man, riding the line, turning for backhanders and backing each other up. The Army, with three 1 goal players and one zero goal player were well balanced but had so many near misses from shots

then on, the Zulus pushed ahead, with Tikkie van Eeden scoring twice and Angus Williamson scoring once to a solitary goal in reply from Martin Ffrench-Blake. A close third chukka saw the Zulus’ Angus Williamson pop in one more goal and then in the final chukka a goal from Martin Ffrench-Blake was to little effect against the two goals from Tikkie van Eeden and two from Lionel Foster, which showed what a truly great four man team performance from the Zulus, who ran out 9-3 winners.

at goal that one stopped counting them. You could see after a while that the Army were unsettled by this and felt that it was clearly going to be one

of those days where nothing goes right. The Royal Navy received a ½ goal on handicap and after Lt Cdr Allan Wilson scored in the first chukka were on their way. In the second chukka, Sub Lt Hiro Suzuki scored with a fabulous shot from about 60 yards out, to put them further into the lead before Capt (now Major) Matt Eyre-Brook scored twice for the Army to bring them back into the game by halftime. After halftime the Army couldn’t buy a goal. In the third chukka, Commodore Richard Mason scored to put the Royal Navy up to a 3½-2 lead. In the final chukka Capt Adrian Aplin scored for the Royal Navy to give them a well deserved 4½-2 win over the Army and thus earn revenge for the previous year.

New section High Goal Pony Review 2010 - UK Season

Top Pony PQ International’s Head Editor, Major Iain Forbes-Cockell, talked to a number of top professional high goal players Some say ponies are 75% of the game, others say it’s as much as 80% of a player’s game is determined by the quality of the ponies on which he/she is mounted. Whatever the percentage, surely a matter of personal opinion, there is no doubt that a very significant portion of a player’s performance is due to the quality of the pony. Put Adolfito Cambiaso on a donkey and a competent player on a decent pony and I think we all know who would be the most

effective on the field. With high goal polo in the UK being so competitive, we decided to ask a selection of high goal professional players to tell us about the two best ponies they had in their UK string this year. The way we put it to them was this: the match is tied with a minute or two left in the last chukka. Which are the two ponies in your string that you would want to change onto to help get that extra edge and try to win before overtime?

A record crowd watched Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach, which saw Midas Construction ride out as convincing winners over Joules - inspired by a blistering performance from England international Andrew Blake Thomas. The final scoreline, Midas Construction 9, Joules 5 ½, did not reflect what was in fact a fiercely-fought contest, with the lead changing half a dozen

times throughout the match before Midas blitzed their opponents in the final chukka. Commentator Peter West, a highly respected figure in the sport, was full of praise for the spectacle: “This was beach polo at its best - some of the finest beach polo I’ve ever seen and a much faster game than last year. You’ve got two exceedingly well balanced sides out there - it’s been fast

and furious and a real treat for spectators. It’s a great privilege to be able to commentate on something I would happily pay my own money to watch.” The hard packed sand of the twomile-long beach made for an ideal playing surface, allowing the game to proceed at a very fast pace from the outset. Starting with a half goal handicap advantage, the Joules team of Andy

Burgess, Jamie Le Hardy and Richard Blake Thomas made the early running in the first chukka, piling pressure upon their opponents in the goal mouth. But it was Tim Vaux of Midas Construction who scored first as he guided the bright orange ball up the beach, holding off persistent challenges from Joules riders to calmly knock the ball between the posts. Ed Olof doubled his team’s score with an under the neck shot, but Joules quickly responded with a goal from international star Jamie Le Hardy, who struck on the break a minute before the hooter sounded for the end of the first chukka. The lead in the match changed hands throughout the second chukka, with Joules going ahead for the first time through a goal from Richard Blake Thomas, who rode on to the ball at speed to score soon after the restart. After a pause in the action to allow the goal scorer to change ponies following a fall, play restarted at a furious pace with Andrew Blake Thomas regaining the lead for Midas with a goal scrambled in at the goalmouth. Captain Andy Burgess struck back for Joules with a long-range hit from the middle of the field, the ball creeping over the line just before half time to give his team a lead of 3 ½ goals to 3. During the interval spectators

flooded on to the pitch to smooth the playing surface - a polo tradition known as ‘treading in’, where divots in the turf are stamped flat. Starting the third chukka was a moment of pure sibling rivalry, as Andrew Blake Thomas and his brother Richard rode off against each other on a charge towards the Joules goal. Andrew emerged victorious to score for Midas, only for Joules to immediately claw a goal back through Jamie Le Hardy. Andrew Blake Thomas then displayed a brilliant piece of skill, scoring a goal with a backhand shot from close range to give Midas a lead of 5 goals to 4 ½ at the end of the third chukka. With the scene set for a final chukka showdown, spectators were bathed in golden light as the sun burst out from behind the clouds. Midas piled on the pressure, scoring four goals in quick succession - two each from Tim Vaux and Ed Olof - to give their team an unassailable 4 ½ goal lead. Joules never gave up, however, with Richard Blake Thomas narrowly missing the chance to score an undefended goal at the other end, hitting out at the goalpost in frustration. He made amends in the very next play by scoring what would turn out to be the final goal of the match, making the final

score Midas Construction 9, Joules 5 ½. Picking up the Shop on the Beach trophy for the Most Valuable Player was Andrew Blake Thomas. He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it - it was a lot quicker this year and there was a higher goal rating on each team. Everyone played their backhands and there was some hard marking. Also the field was a lot flatter so we were able to keep the ball moving which made it a lot more entertaining. And there’s nothing like beating your brother!” Also picking up a special trophy was Tibu, the pony ridden in the fourth chukka by Andrew Blake Thomas. Tibu won an embroidered horse blanket after being judged the Extreme Academy Best Playing Pony. For organiser Andy Burgess of South West Polo, the event was a great success - despite finishing on the losing team. “I’m really pleased at the way it’s turned out - the polo was a hundred times better than last year, with some of the best players we’ve got in the country playing. The response you get from the crowd is awesome, everybody gets really behind the teams. Getting to see this standard of polo is a real eye-opener and in this setting it’s just awesome, and I hope it inspires some people to take the game up.”

UK Season - Polo Psyichologist

The Mental Game PQ International’s Head Editor interviewed Miranda Banks, a sports and business psychologist on her background and involvement with polo. Photographs are by Vanessa Taylor and PoloLine.

PQ: Were you aware of any sports psychology involvement in polo before you started in 2007? MB: I had thought that sports performance psychology would be new to polo. I was wrong. Despite a dearth in the UK, Pite Merlos tells me that many top Argentine players have been working successfully with sports psychologists for years. However, for UK polo, their systematic use is still in its infancy.

PQ: What is your background and sports psychology experience to date? MB: My background is as a performance psychologist (sport, business, media) where I

spent over ten years in Australia working with athletes from various groups, including Australian Rugby, the Australian Institute of Sport, Queensland Academy of Sport, Rugby League, Cricket and Triathlon. Subsequently, those mental and behavioural systems distilled successfully to business teams and leaders as well as media personalities and stage performers. A couple of years ago, I had itchy feet and left sunny Queensland for the call of home and returned to the UK.

PQ: How did you become involved with polo? MB: I’ve always liked polo. I had a couple of clients in Australia who were low-goal enthusiasts and my cousin is professional player Julian Daniels. His sister Samantha and I still recount days of childhood being perched on the roof of the ancient Range Rover at Ham, yelling support and guzzling the remains of lunchtime champagne, in between warming-up ponies. It’s been good to return to the

fields, though this time my car roof is spared and champagne waits till afterwards, unless I’m off-duty!

PQ: What do you see as the role of the sports psychologist in polo? MB: Not everyone is clear on the role of a sports psychologist. I’m often asked, in all sporting contexts, whether my job is to motivate players. My answer is that motivation is usually the least of the problem as players are almost always motivated to win. Rather, their thinking or emotions get in the way of their best playing, so mental management becomes more important. In a nutshell, a psychologist is an efficiency coach. Both a team and an individual have goals that they wish to achieve. Ideally, by aligning thoughts and behaviours both within and between individuals to those goals, achievement is faster and better maintained. PQ: How did you get potential clients to take you on? MB: Business is nothing without clients and to spread the word of my work in my first year here, aside from wonderful family contacts, I would stand on the side of the polo field and collar unsuspecting players and supporters. One of the first was Clare Mathias, of “Clarita” polo team fame. Having a particularly professional and comprehensive approach to their polo, Chris and Clare were keen to have me on board to work with the teams in groups as well as with individual players. Three years later, I’m happy to still be a part of their coaching support and we’re looking ahead to next year. Shortly after meeting Clare, Malcolm Borwick, a strong supporter of mental training and sports psychology, introduced me to Jerome Wirth, high-goal team Enigma’s patron. At the time, I was also working with Bath Rugby team and Jerome, as a former semiprofessional rugby player, was very supportive of individual player development, both with coaching and psychology. It was in the face of considerable scepticism from others that Jerome contracted me for the season to work with Enigma two years’ ago in a fairly intense capacity during the tournaments, but I believe our results in making the Gold Cup semi-finals this year were as a consequence of all team members playing their role – from

players on-field to Julian’s technical coaching, Juan’s physical training, Mark’s organisation, grooms’ horse management and my psychology. Jerome tells me he agrees and has signed me on again for next year, which is thoroughly appreciated too!

PQ: Apart from Clarita and Enigma, are there other polo organisations with whom you are working? MB: In addition to my commercial team time, the HPA invited me to run a workshop for the England Team last year, which was warmly received and, as a consequence, I started working with some England players individually as well as in an occasional advisory role to the Development Committee. I have also just started helping out with the commercial polo school, the International Polo Academy. Besides that, I’m looking forward to next year and working with Dr. Amin and his marvellous family polo team, the Golden Falcons, after they return from carving up the snow at the Asian Winter Games! PQ: So, how does it work, using a sports performance psychologist? MB: Practically, as with all of my teams, at the start of each season, we meet to discuss the months ahead including its opportunities and challenges and then we develop a mental training plan to meet the performance targets. If the team also has a coach, like Julian Hipwood and formerly Andrew Hine for Enigma, then I liaise closely with him regarding team and individual development, pooling resources within the bounds of confidentiality to best improve the team. Group meetings focus on various areas such as team identity, goal clarity, team cohesion, leadership style and expectations, individual pre-match preparation plans, management of performance anxiety and mental arousal for optimal playing. Every team and every player is different and the smaller the team, the greater the personality matches and mismatches affect performance. Polo, being a team of only four, is particularly vulnerable to those mismatches. Discussions regarding player selection therefore become useful, if a psychologist is brought on board in time to do so as, often, personality match is overlooked in favour of prospective on-field skill alone. Individually, I work with players to enhance their strengths and improve their weaker areas. This might include skills such as mental rehearsal, reducing anxiety, improving accuracy, improving decision-making, mental toughness and

managing emotions – or how to best influence others under pressure and other aspects of leadership. Other areas of focus are often organisational and more off-field in nature, such as time management during the week, optimal training schedules, effective recovery, managing relationships and planning for next season. There are a myriad of individual polo players as well as teams with whom I’ve worked over the last couple of years and look forward to working with in the future – all sharing that common characteristic of being good at what they do, but wanting strongly to be better – enough to do something about it. And, speaking of getting better, here’s to next season and my acquisition of Spanish!

PQ: Finally, what can you say or do to help the player who hits/ taps the ball half the length of the field and then misses that final goal shot? MB: Such a good question! My answer is two-fold. First, one must train to do it well. By that, I mean you must practice your technique at speed and under pressure as well as through mental rehearsal. When you’re alone, practice running to goal at speed and using a time limit (for example, a watch alarm). When you’re stickand-balling with others, use them to give you that pressure. Mental rehearsal is when, away from the field, you sit somewhere quiet and without distraction and, using all of your senses (i.e. what do you see, smell, feel, hear etc and how your body feels when it makes the action), transfer your mind into running to goal and hitting that final goal shot successfully. It’s a proven method for success as, if you do proper rehearsals, your brain is incapable of knowing the difference of a 139

successful shot in your head and one on the field. It means that once you return to the field, your brain has more confident thoughts flying about, knowing that you’ve slotted shots before. The second part of my answer relates to game day itself. If you’ve done your training well, then you have the correct muscle memory – you just have to allow yourself to use it. There are many, many techniques that you can use to make that happen, but here are just a few: Ensure that you remain emotionally in control during the game, as this will mean you’re much less likely to make mistakes when the pressure gets heavier (that’s a discussion for another time, but good breathing control helps!). Be aware of your body and the rhythm of your horse to ensure that you maintain your timing. Ensure your shoulders are relaxed enough to execute the shot – words like “flow” or “relax” can help, or you may have others that are useful. Finally, and this is a technique that works for lots of players across various sports, look ahead and think that the goal mouth is like a giant Hoover – it WANTS the ball, so it’s going to help you by sucking it up. If it’s “on your side”, then it’s not quite so isolating when you’re running up there alone. Of all these points, however, I firmly believe that the most important is to practice as frequently as possible on the horses and terrain to really consolidate that muscle memory and that ability to nail your timing. This means that, even under pressure, you can drop your heart rate, recall your rhythm as quickly as possible and put yourself into the groove of the action.

Book Review - Mike Roberts

Mike Roberts was 10 years old when his father first showed him how to develop and print photographs in the bathroom at their home. In the early 1960s, having joined the Welsh Guards he was involved in the familiar round of public duties, guarding Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London, the Bank of England and Windsor Castle. His Regiment needed someone to take some PR pictures and as he was the only soldier with a camera, he got the job. It proved a handy excuse to reduce the number of times he was on guard duty, which he found boring. Luckily for us, it was the start of a long career taking photographs of both Royal and military occasions and after the late Major Ronald Ferguson asked him to go to Smith’s Lawn. Windsor Great Park in 1968 to photograph him and fellow Officers playing polo at weekends, Mike started taking plenty of photos of polo action. Mike has put together a book full of a selection of photographs from personal shots of members of the Royal Family to the many shots he took of players past and present both on and off the polo field. When he started, there wasn’t the technology available that there is nowadays – no digital cameras, no personal computers, no “Photoshop” to edit and adjust the photos and no email or broadband to easily distribute the finished product. It took real skill to compose and take both still and action shots. You will see plenty of examples of Mike’s skill in this book, which covers a period of over 40 years involvement with the Royal Family and Polo. It will offer the reader an insight to the changes that have taken place over that period as well as bring back some fond memories and it will show younger readers some of the developments that have taken place over the years, in terms of better club facilities, as well as show them photos of past players of whom they may only have heard but never seen. Argentina Season - Argentina Snow Cup

Sun, snow and good polo Julius Bär were the champions of the second edition of the most important snow polo tournament in South American. Two whole days featuring an excellent level of polo, proved that the Snow Polo category in the World Polo Tour deserves its credentials. Report of the tournament by Federico Levy.

Held at Chapelco, a ski resort located in San Martín de los Andes, Patagonia, for the second consecutive year, Julius Bär and Jaeger-LeCoultre sponsored the most important snow polo tournament in the entire American Continent. The tournament forms part of the international World Polo Tour (WPT) circuit, which unfolds in

Switzerland, Italy, Russia and France. Throughout the two-day, four team event, polo reached the snow-capped mountain boasting outstanding performances by renowned players such as Guillermo Caset, Martín Garrahan and Diego Araya. The public put their skiing on hold to watch good polo throughout all the matches.

Final Day From early morning, the field looked splendid thanks to prior snowfall. Featuring high-level polo players, guests, and sponsors, the game ended with Julius Bär defeating Nissan Polo Team in the 2010 Argentine Snow Polo Cup final. The Julius Bär team, comprising Juan Cruz Adrogué, Ignacio Pieres and Martín Garrahan dominated the final and beat Nissan Polo Team 3-2. Martín Garrahan, who scored five goals on the previous day and added another two goals during the final, gave an outstanding performance. Martín was in control of the rhythm of the match and imposed a fast, attacking pace. match, and won the Jaeger-LeCoultre prize, a Reverso Squadra presented by Mathieu Olivari. In the second game, Provincia de Buenos Aires won 4-2 against JaegerLeCoultre and took the Provincia de Buenos Aires Cup. Eight-goaler Diego Araya was the star figure and provided his team with a strong defence. Playing at number three, he generated every single attack and scored three goals. The “Fundación Puentes de Luz” (Bridges of Light Foundation) received contributions at the tent set up at the base of the mountain. This foundation offers service programmes for severely disabled people, including guidance and support to families in the area. At the prize-giving, Martín Garrahan (Julius Bär) and Santiago Tanoira (Nissan Polo Team) were also presented with their awards. They each scored 7 goals and became the top goal-scorers of the competition and received the prize in honour of Valentín Caset. Santiago Garrahan (Nissan Polo Team) received the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra watch for Best Amateur Player and the Julius Bär prize for Best Playing Pony went to Fafá, played by Javier Herrera (Jaeger-LeCoultre).

A thrilling 2010 Argentine season By Alejandra Ocampos

After the final of each Argentine Open at Palermo, many look back at the number one ground at the “Cathedral of Polo” with a certain nostalgia, as the start of the following season’s tournament seems so far away. Heralding the start of the most eagerly awaited tournaments in the world by both players and fans, september has come around quickly and the Argentine high goal season has started again. The 2010 season at the Mecca of polo won’t be just another season, as there are be important changes in

certain teams, while others conclude one era to begin a new one in 2011. Sadly, there will no longer be any 80 goal matches. As usual, the San Jorge Military Riding Club Open kick-starts the season, and those participating will be playing for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup with finals played at Palermo. The second tournament, the first of the triple crown fixtures, the Jockey Club Open will be reviving up the engines, and this year’s event will boast top-level teams, a total of nine teams up to 36

goals. Some will be complete (Chapa II, La Aguada, but with Alejandro Novillo Astrada replacing his brother Nacho) and the rest will be interesting and even surprising mixes, such as Chapa Uno, with Bautista Heguy, Lucas Monteverde and Lolo Castagnola, and the return of La Mariana, with the three Merlos brothers. But before we review what is coming up next in the Triple Crown team-wise, let’s just stop for a moment to dedicate a separate paragraph to the player who is undoubtedly the man of the

year. Adolfo Cambiaso, has been experiencing a 2010 he won’t forget so easily. After winning the Argentine Open in 2009, he returned to the United States, after a year’s absence, where he won the Triple Crown with Crab Orchard. He later travelled to England to play with Dubai, made an explosive partnership with Pablo MacDonough and won both the Queen’s Cup and the British Open. Not quite satisfied with this, he packed his bags and left England for the United States once again to play in Santa Barbara for the first time, with Lucchese, and while he was at it, he conquered the three most important tournaments played in California – the Robert Skene Trophy, the USPA America Cup and the Pacific Coast Open. Five plus three… eight consecutive titles in one year, totalling nine if we include the Palermo Open. King of kings. An undisputed number one. An absolute and overall record. Undoubtedly, a genius.

With such motivation, with so many trophies under his arm, Cambiaso is back in the ring in Argentina, although he won’t be participating with La Dolfina at the Tortugas Open, as he and his wife María Vazquez will be welcoming their third daughter who will be born sometime around then. So it will be Guillermo Caset Jr. (8) who will take Cambiaso’s place in the first Triple Crown competition, until he makes his appearance at the Hurlingham Open. La Dolfina will not have the 40 goals which the team held in 2009, since Mariano Aguerre has left, and later the talented Uruguayan player, David “Pelón” Stirling (9) joined them, after undergoing his baptism of fire last year when he played the Argentine Triple Crown, with Indios Chapaleufú II. It will be a debut and farewell for this line-up, as Lolo Castagnola (10) and Lucas Monteverde (10) will be leaving the team at the end of the season.

The changes that will take place within La Dolfina towards the end of the year won’t be the only ones, as Ellerstina’s current line-up, which at present is the only 40-goal team in the world, is following the same path. Thus, Argentina 2010 will see Gonzalo Jr. (10) and Facundo Pieres (10) together with Pablo MacDonough (10) and Juan Martín Nero (10) for the last time, as the latter two will be joining La Dolfina, featuring one of the most talked about transfers that have taken place over the past few years and which has puzzled quite a few people. After becoming the Tortugas and Hurlingham champions in 2009, they capitulated in the historic 80-goal final at Palermo against La Dolfina, and therefore, the boys in black will seek to leave this successful line-up after winning the title at the Palermo Open. Besides Ellerstina, another two big teams will remain unchanged in 2010,

namely La Aguada (37), with the four Novillo Astrada brothers - Eduardo (Jr.) (9), Miguel (10), Javier (9) and Nacho (9), as well as, Pilará (36), with Agustín (9) and Sebastián Merlos (9), together with Marcos Heguy (10) and Santiago Chavanne (8). So it’s been said, two teams that can really start people talking during this season. The fighting spirit shown by the Novillo Astrada brothers and the weight of Pilará’s figures which, despite the latter, still owe themselves the Triple Crown title. On the other hand, there will be certain changes in both the Chapaleufú teams. Matías Magrini (8) is the new man playing for Indios Chapaleufú II, who will be joining the three Heguy brothers – Pepe, Eduardo and Nachi. For its part, Chapa Uno will have Matías MacDonough (8), who will be returning to the Argentine Triple Crown, after his brief time with

Ellerstina in 2009, to play the Hurlingham Open final, replacing Juan Martín Nero. Bautista Heguy (9) and Hilario Ulloa (9) will be playing with him, in addition to a second incorporation, Pite Merlos (9), who shone last year with Alegría, having emerged from the qualification. Speaking of Alegría, Canadian patron Fred Mannix (7) is back on the Argentine fields, although in this case with a new line-up. Francisco Bensadon (8) will continue, and Francisco de Narvaez Jr. (9) will be joining them, as well as Mariano Aguerre’s (10) incorporation which was an interesting development. Totalling 34 goals, Alegría will be playing the qualifiers… … which are a key stage that grants just two places for the Hurlingham and Palermo Open Tournaments, with the participation of six teams between 29 151

and 34 goals, trying to make it through to the two most important tournament finals in the world. Among these quartets, we find Alegría, Sao José (30), Las Praderas (30), Trenque Lauquen (30), La Quinta Beaufort (29) and Pilará II (29). The latter team will be presenting the same line-up formed by a new generation of young polo players who won the “Copa Cámara de Diputados 2009” (Chamber of Representatives Cup 2009). By the way, we haven’t forgotten this tournament, which many consider to be the prelude to the Open Tournament. Dear friends, polo fans, such is the way things are at present. This is the overall outlook and what is coming up next in the Argentine season 2010. The only thing missing is for spectators to take a seat in their favourite stands, cheer their favourite teams… and enjoy the best polo in the world!!!

Festival and various international polo and horse-racing events. It is often frequented by stars who enjoy its traditional glamorous atmosphere but modern facilities. This sophisticated town of elegant distractions and good taste knows how to extend a welcome, and there is certainly something for everyone here. The famous 700 yard-long wooden promenade provides an amazing spectacle, with its expanse of multi-coloured parasols behind which the constant play of sunshine on ever-moving clouds and water creates an impressionist back-drop. The International Centre: Inaugurated in 1992, the Deauville International Centre is local window on the world and also a technological feat, buried several yards underground to protect the landscape, whose hi-tech equipment is designed to serve as a platform for the most sumptuous events. The racecourse: Built in 1864 by the Duke de Morny, the father of modern Deauville and a great racing enthusiast, the racecourse is used both in winter and summer. Three polo fields in the middle of the course regularly receive the best teams in the world.

The largest military landing in history took place in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Monuments, museums, bunkers and cemeteries are a living commemoration to the Battle of Normandy. A perfect base from which to tour the beaches, the tiny town of Bayeux is built around the magnificent Cathedral of Notre-Dame and is home to the 200foot long Bayeux Tapestry, a world famous masterpiece whose cartoon like scenes depict the epic tale of William the Conqueror's expedition to England in the 11th century.

Deauville-Treauville The glamorous resort town of Deauville, home to the rich and famous, is a thriving vacation spot of luxury hotels, casinos, race tracks, golf courses and polo grounds. Its twin city, Trouville, separated from Deauville by the Touques river, is a more sedate fishing village. Both towns boast wide sandy beaches. Deauville is a glamorous seaside resort which has plenty to offer all year round. It is home to the American Film 153

The Villa Strassburger: This remarkable house, classified as an historical monument in 1975, was built in 1907 by Baron Henri de Rothschild and purchased by the American millionaire Ralph-Beaver Strassburger in 1924. It is the archetype of Augeron manors, with its ground floor in a check pattern of bricks and dressed stone, and its halftimbered upper floor. The Casino:The present casino, ranking among the best in Europe, is on the site of the first casino, opened in 1864. Its lights have been illuminating the sea front since 1912, and are a majestic reminder of the splendour of 18th century festivities. Sea bathing establishment : built in 1923, the establishment is an elegant complex of galleries and atriums, and fountains decorated with mosaics. Its international renown is partly due to the authenticity of its narrow paved streets and timberframed house-fronts, its little shops, charming hotels and typical restaurants, but also to the variety of its monuments and the wealth of its cultural and artistic heritage. Simultaneously fishing harbour, marina and commercial port, Honfleur has succeeded in making the most of its rich historical and artistic heritage. Honfleur, a town of painters and Impressionism, possesses that something extra that makes it irresistible. The changing light on the Seine estuary inspired Courbet, Monet, Boudin and many others. Today dozens of galleries and artists' studios continue to display a wide choice of classical and modern paintings.

Les Andelys The two fishing villages of Great and Little Andelys, already an important religious centre in the Gallo-roman period, grew towards each other over the centuries to form the present town. In a strategic position overlooking a meander of the Seine, Les Andelys were bound to arouse the envy of the French Crown, in need of a route to the sea, so between 1196 and 1198 Richard the Lionheart, Duke of Normandy as well as king of England, built ChĂ˘teau Gaillard on a cliff to protect the Duchy and its capital, Rouen. The fortress was a veritable masterpiece of military architecture, and very advanced for its time, but it nonetheless failed to resist the attacks of the French king Philippe Auguste in 1204. Retaken by the English during the Hundred Years War, the castle was finally abandoned when developments in artillery made it obsolete.

Lisieux

Beuvron-en-Auge By far the prettiest of the Pays d'Auge villages is the small Beuvron-en-Auge, 7km north of the N13 halfway between Lisieux and Caen. It consists of an oval central square, ringed by a glorious ensemble of multicoloured half-timbered houses, including the yellow and brown sixteenth-century Vieux Manoir.Normandy as a whole contains many houses with this architectural design, but Beuvron-en-Auge still remains as a 'not to be missed' example. And don't forget to stop long enough to have a glass of calvados while you are enjoying a wander around the town. Also take a look at the pretty little church and Chapelle de Clermont in the village.

Lisiuex The capital of the Pays d' Auge, is one of the most charming places in Normandy, located 25 kilometres south of the CĂ´te Fleurie and its prestigious seaside resorts. Like other Norman towns, it was founded over two thousand years ago. During the 19th century, the town gradually lost its importance, first religious and then economicâ&#x20AC;Ś until a miracle occurred, to shake it out of its peaceful existence. It was at the turn of the 20th century that France and 155

later the whole world discovered the life and message of a young Norman Carmelite, Sister Theresa of the Child Jesus. The town where she lived became an important shrine of spirituality. Despite all the destruction of the Second World War, Lisieux also still has half-timbered houses and many sights as proof of its rich historical past. Geographically, it is an ideal base for exploring Normandy, its country seats, its gastronomy and its famous apple trees.
