The Masonic Charities Fund has reassured thousands throughout the years, as it provides help where and when a need arises. Established in 1993 by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, the fund has 2

We all give to feel good, but knowing your one gift can help several populations at once makes you feel great. Pennsylvania Masons and families and friends have a lot to be proud of, including the Masonic Charities. The charities have done good work for generations, and they have a great amount of stability. For donors, you know your money is going where it’s needed most. It’s heartwarming to see children growing up, the needs of the elderly being met and everything else they do. I have an appreciation for it all, because it stems from a mission many of us believe in: simply blessing those in need.” -BILL UNDERWOOD, Mason and annual Masonic

been used to support anything from scholarships and disaster relief across the globe to operations and purchases for the Masonic Charities.

/ / / / / / / / / / / a note from R.W. Grand Master Raymond Dietz Like you, the five Masonic Charities are built on a foundation of love and compassion. They support those of all ages and needs. Each charity demonstrates a different mission, but all have positively impacted countless lives in 2016.

The Masonic Villages provide care and security to residents, regardless of their ability to pay. More than 2,800 individuals call Masonic Village home, where they can discover and rediscover their passions within a loving environment.

The Masonic Temple, Library and Museum of Pennsylvania has served as a pride piece for Masons since 1873 by educating and inspiring the public and preserving Masonic history.

The Masonic Charities Fund offers help at local, national and global levels for Masonic and non-Masonic projects alike.

The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation provides education and programs to develop leadership and character among the youth of Pennsylvania. Each group receives educational resources, training and opportunities for scholarships in support of their future goals. Within the Masonic Children’s Home, which is fully supported by donations, up to 40 youth experience love and care provided within a structured and secure surrounding. With many opportunities to grow, explore interests and learn life values, youth are free to dream.

Thank you for supporting the Masonic Charities and for keeping Freemasonry and its philanthropic goals alive. If you are new to Freemasonry, it is vital for you to understand what we, as Brothers, can do together to change the lives of those in need of our help. Feel free to share this Annual Report with those who may not fully understand Pennsylvania Freemasonry and its various charities. Your membership, leadership and commitment are very much valued. Now, it’s time to hear from those who have been impacted by your kindness.

MASONIC TEMPLE | LIBRARY AND MUSEUM

MORE than just a

Building

You help the Masonic Temple educate, display and preserve history every day. The Masonic Temple is home to 30,000 artifacts, seven varying Lodge rooms and is a meeting place for 27 Lodges. With your support, the Masonic Temple has undergone renovations to continue protecting history and become a place of education for Pennsylvania Masons and people worldwide. In 2016, families and scholars turned to the Temple to create memories, learn about Freemasonry and hold fine events.

“

It was a proud moment passing on the tradition of Freemasonry to my son, and visiting the Temple together for a special initiation ceremony made it 20 times better. The Temple showed him our history and who we are today as members of the greatest fraternity in the world. The Temple is something that my brothers and I were always proud of, and now my son is, too. -SHAUN SPONAGLE, Mason and

PENNSYLVANIA MASONIC YOUTH FOUNDATION

You INVEST in

Leaders

Your gifts prepare young adults to become leaders in their communities. From friendship to learning, youth turn to the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation to build skills and expand their possibilities. In addition to encouraging leadership through annual programming, the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation teaches youth the importance of teamwork, personal responsibility, hard work, goal-setting and charity in smaller chapters. Your support sponsors scholarships for deserving students, workshops, lodging for educational events and more.

Through DeMolay, I’ve traveled across the country for training, planned programs on my own and led and bonded with kids my age. I’ve always struggled with public speaking - actually, I hated it. Now, I can get up in front of crowds. I’ve also learned the importance of charity. You never know what a small amount of money or just a conversation can do for someone.” -TYLER MOYER, AGE 17

MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME

CHANGE THE LIVES

YOU

of

CHILDREN

The most important gift you can give a child is a bright future. Twenty-one percent of Pennsylvania’s youth were considered underprivileged in 2016. The Masonic Children’s Home aims to change that overwhelming statistic 40 youth at a time, with your help. Thanks to your gifts, youth are not only provided with daily necessities like clothing, medical care, lunch money and school books, they’re given an opportunity to pursue higher education and, most importantly, a safe and stable place to call home. House parents and on-site tutors help youth learn the importance of responsibility, education and working as a team. In 2016, because of you, youth also learned these valuable lessons through extracurricular opportunities including leadership camps, volunteering, sports, music lessons and college visits.

I love being around my friends and people who constantly show so much love and care for my well-being. Because of people who give, I have been able to focus on my academics, play my favorite sport and have the chance to go to college, which is pretty important to me.” -ABA, high school junior (second from right)

MASONIC VILLAGES

YOU HELP a

BUILD

Community

You have helped Masonic Villages become a place people can turn to, regardless of their financial circumstances. You provide older adults with around-the-clock medical care, a home to call their own and opportunities through which they can find purpose and joy. In 2016, these opportunities included special programming; intergenerational learning; trips; access to unique therapies like music therapy, aquatics, arts, massage and spiritual care; beauty shop visits; expansive libraries and more. For residents whose savings, insurance or public assistance does not fully cover the cost of their care, you are a true blessing. In retirement living, because of your support, residents know they will be taken care of even if they outlive their ability to afford their monthly fees. Masonic Villages across the state have been refining resident and community care for 145 years through various services including hospice, home care, shortterm rehabilitation, adult daily living care, child care, volunteer opportunities and consulting. 10

MasonicCharitiesPa.org

When we reached our old age, my husband said he wanted me to be taken care of after he was gone. He knew I spent my whole life taking care of everyone else, and he wanted a break for me. If he were here now, he’d be so pleased with how people meet my every need, no matter how big or small. I’m encouraged to be independent, but I also know people are here if I need them. I never thought I would live to 100, but I’m happy I have. People here just make living easy.” -BETTY STEPP, resident
