thousands of people, the Masonic Charities Fund provided aid by distributing donations to the Grand Lodge of California. This is just one example of how your generous support assisted where and when a need arose in 2018.
a note from
R.W. Grand Master S. Eugene Herritt EACH MASONIC CHARITY FILLS A UNIQUE NEED – a need that without your support, would go unmet: history unpreserved; a youth’s potential unfulfilled; a child unloved; an older adult uncared for; or a victim of a natural disaster unassisted. Because of you, in 2018: The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania preserved Pennsylvania Freemasonry’s history and enlightened visitors from around the world. The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation provided young adults with a strong foundation for personal growth and success in school and life. The Masonic Children’s Home gave 40 youth a place to call home and all the love and support they need to excel at school, on the field or stage, on the job and in their pursuit of life goals. The Masonic Villages, home to almost 3,000 individuals, provided loving care to all residents, including those who may be unable to pay for the services they need. The Masonic Charities Fund offered help at a local, national and international level for Masonic and non-Masonic projects alike. Thank you for supporting one or more of the Masonic Charities in 2018 and for believing in the mission of Pennsylvania Freemasonry. Keep reading to learn about a few of the lives being transformed by your generosity. Lifting up others and providing them a new outlook or direction in life is a priceless gift. *If you are new to Freemasonry, know that your membership, leadership and commitment are sincerely valued. This report is one of the ways we demonstrate, as Brothers, what we can do together to change the lives of those in need. Feel free to share this Annual Report with those who may not fully understand Pennsylvania Freemasonry and our five various charities which impact those of all ages.

KEEP HISTORY ALIVE
THE SUPPORT OF DONORS LIKE YOU HELPED PRESERVE THE PAST FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. The Masonic Library and Museum houses the past and present of Pennsylvania Freemasonry within the beautiful Masonic Temple. The unique rooms and furniture, one-ofa-kind artwork, historic books and rare documents enlighten visitors, Masons and non-Masons, alike.

The library holds a record 75,000 volumes and 30,000 archival manuscripts and collections on the histories of Freemasonry, philosophy, religion, architecture and more. Thanks to you, the library is proud to display a rare 1842 reprint of the Book of Mormon by Brother Joseph Smith, which has been re-bound and given a protective case to delay the effects of age and abrasion. With your support, in 2018, we began digitizing and indexing Masonic membership books, with much
additional work to be done. As more and more people access our historic documents, oils, dirt and debris from handling will degrade the pieces over time, and they will need restoration. In 2018, 32 Masonic lodges met inside the building, while Masons, organizations and individuals held special events in the renovated ballroom, exposing even more people to the treasures inside. Your support allowed the Library and Museum to impress more than 14,000 visitors, new and old, in 2018.

“It’s a gorgeous building. Whenever someone comes to visit us from out of town, we always bring them to the Temple. Once you enter the Temple, the impact the building has is just indescribable. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings in the United States (if not the world). I get chills every time I walk in.” Brother Teddy Thornal - member of St. Andrews Lodge No. 367, Charleston, South Carolina (residing in Philadelphia)
“Stunning! Beautiful stroll through immaculate rooms and world history. Every nook, corner, bench, chair, room was amazing. I walked away so inspired by what the Master Masons had achieved in that building. I now see why adherents are high achievers in life, having something as motivating as this to belong to is enough to boost anyone. ...”

YOUTH FIND THEIR VOICE
Colby Whetstone and Hannah Primm
YOU PROVIDED YOUTH WITH LIFE LESSONS TO TRANSFORM THEM INTO LEADERS. In 2018, with support from contributors like you, the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation impacted more than 900 young men and women as they developed skills, confidence and strong moral character. Pennsylvania’s DeMolay, Job’s Daughters and Rainbow Girls youth groups each provide 6

opportunities for young adults to work with each other, set and achieve goals, contribute to their communities and grow friendships. At the annual LifeSkills Conference, through adventures and challenges, youth built respect, responsibility and relationships. Because of you, those who were not able to cover the conference costs could attend. LifeSkills is open to any youth sponsored by a Mason or a lodge, and helps us reach youth in communities not served by a Masonic youth group.
Annual programming and antibullying workshops for adults gave them the tools to mentor future generations. These efforts help keep children safe and encourage youth to reach their highest potential. In 2018, $165,000 from caring individuals like you was invested in 61 hardworking youth through scholarship opportunities, so they had the chance to attend college. More than $1.6 million has been awarded to eligible youth since the creation of the Educational Endowment Fund in 1989.

“DeMolay has taught me important core values. You learn to cherish the people in your life, conquer your inner fears and appreciate the things that came before you. I’ve made lifelong friends, and my experience has been life-changing. I’ve been through a lot in my life, and DeMolay has provided me a place where I can just be free.” -Colby Whetstone, member of DeMolay (pictured on p. 6, left)
“I joined Rainbow at 12 years old. Since then, I’ve developed courage and the ability to lead a group and speak publicly. I learned the importance of empathy, kindness, forgiveness and gratitude. I know how to love myself and give back to others. It’s fun to see the new younger girls come into the program and break through their shells. We all came in as strangers and are now best friends.”

MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME
You helped
CHILDREN ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS
Siblings Noelia and Nestor
YOU GAVE CHILDREN A PLACE THEY WANT TO COME HOME TO EVERY DAY. Thanks to you, the Masonic Children’s Home is able to provide a safe haven for children who come from unstable environments. In 2018, 11 new children moved to the children’s home, where they received medical and dental care, academic assistance and needed items like clothing, bedding, school supplies and more. Most importantly, they found 8

a stable place surrounded by caring house parents and staff. Stability at home enables children to focus on their education, extracurricular activities, sports, hobbies, jobs and volunteering in their community. It helps them develop into well-rounded individuals who, because of you, are able to reach their fullest potential at school and beyond. Children earned a spot on the honor roll 33 times in 2018, three seniors were accepted into post-secondary
degree programs and seven alumni are receiving support with higher education, because of your generosity. Not only is the children’s home a safe place, it is a beautiful and inspiring space. Thanks to you, the children’s home underwent its first major renovation in 24 years. Throughout 2017 and 2018, each of the children’s cottages were renovated, and now each child has his or her own bedroom. A new resource center provides a one-stop shop for youth to study and meet with tutors.

“I’ve definitely grown a lot - from being shy when I was younger to now doing so much more. I’m more open to talking about things. Living with other girls, we have some differences, but we all come back together and have fun. We understand each other. Thank you so much for the opportunity to overcome things that happened in the past and come out with a new lease on life.”
“Living at the children’s home changed my life in many ways. The relationships I’ve made here are the ones I should have always had. The people here were always there for me, and I know I’m going to be there for my future family one day. I can say I got that from this place. Without the children’s home, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

MASONIC VILLAGES
You helped SENIORS ENJOY LIFE
Leo and Donna Peddicord
YOU GAVE HOPE TO THOSE IN NEED OF A HELPING HAND. At Masonic Villages, residents who have spent their lives giving back to their country, families, jobs and communities, find comfort, security and purpose. Statewide, more than 50 percent of nursing care residents cannot pay for the care and services they need. Because of generous supporters like you, they live without worry and embrace each day as a gift. 10
MasonicCharitiesPA.org
With declining government reimbursements for health care services, your support is leaving an even bigger impression. You enable residents to live healthy, full lives with opportunities for growth, engagement and enjoyment. In 2018, to address rising expenses and shrinking reimbursements, Masonic Villages continued to expand retirement living options and explore new partnerships and services, as it has for 148 years. Hospice, home care, home health, rehabilitation, adult daily living
care, pharmacy services, volunteer opportunities and outreach round out the array of services for residents and the community. Mutuallybeneficial partnerships include schools, universities, child care centers and others, which enhance opportunities for residents and provide staff with additional support. Your generosity made special moments, like a music therapy program, and memories, like a formal evening of dining and entertainment, part of every resident’s life in 2018.

“Masonic Village has provided us with a wonderful place to live. I live in our cottage, while my wife, Donna, lives in the Masonic Health Care Center where she is able to receive the care she needs. I cannot say enough about the donors and the staff who treat Donna so well. Even on the days I cannot make it up to visit her, I know she is in good hands. I don’t think there is a better place that we could call home than right here.” - Leo and Donna Peddicord, residents (pictured on p. 10)
“This is the place to be. I have a roof over my head, three meals a day, friendly people to talk to and so many opportunities to participate in activities I enjoy. I can be myself. I appreciate everyone who dedicates their time and energy to making sure I have everything I need here, and more. The donors and staff work so hard to keep every resident happy, laughing and healthy, and for that, I am thankful.”

“I am so pleased with all of the people at Masonic Village who have touched my mother’s life, because they care about her health and happiness as much as I do. With age, the quality of life can become hard to manage, but her quality of life is so high because of the many resources she is surrounded with, thanks to donors and dedicated employees whose generosity has impacted her life.”
“My parents made the decision to move to the Masonic Village 13 years ago for the Masonic fellowship and knowing that they would always receive good care and be around good people. They were right in making such a decision. [Staff] always made time to keep my father and I updated on mother’s health status, and the care and love that they gave to her was beyond belief.”
