The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania h as a number of Truman items on exh ibit in the muse um of the Masonic Temp l e in Phi ade lphia.
Among the items s a stone w th maso ni c symbo l s cut in to it that was sent to the Grand Lodge b y Pres ident Truman in 1950. Forty-nine s tones, discovered during the reconstruction of th e White Ho use, were, at the president's direction, carefu lly c leaned and sent to each of the Grand Lodges i n the country.
A l so on display is a lithographic print of Bro. Truman in hi s regalia as Grand Mas t er as created b y Greta Kempton. It is autographed by Mrs. Kempton and Bro. Hugh McLaugh lin Grand Master of M issouri.
The 100th anniversary of the birth of Bro. Harry S. Truman, 33rd Pres id e nt of the Un ited States and Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri, was commemorated on May8 with a Joint Session of both Houses of Congress and with maso nic observances throu g hout the nation.
Masons are hi sto ri ca ll y fond of pointing to the pres dents w h o are or were members of the fraternity and s hower a grea t d ea l of brother y love and affection on th e memory of Bro. Truman, probably b eca u se h e, a mong the modern presidents, was most visib le as a mason a nd most proud of hi s masonic record.
He was made a ma so n in Belton Lodge No. 450 in Belton, Missouri in 1 909 a t the age of 24. He was one of the found ers of Grandview Lodge No. 6 1 8, acted as Wors hipful Master under dispensation. and was elected its firs t Master under th e Lodge char t er.
Bro. Truman' s proficie ncy as a r itualist led directly to his eventua e l ection as Gra nd Master of M i sso uri in 1940.
t was in hi s Grand Master's address on September 30, 1941 that h e described hi s service as Grand Master as "an honor which I be li eve s g reater th an a n y other which ca n come to m e " H e repeated the stateme nt while president in 1949 when he was ca ll ed upon as a Past Grand Master to install th e Grand Lodge officers i n St. Louis.
