Grand Master's Record at 22 Months

Bro. William A Carpenter pledged almost two yea rs ago to a l\ e hi s message as Grand Master to th e only place where Masons are made and wher e Freemasonry must b e understood if th e fr a ternity is to g r o w a nd prosper.

" If you want to m ee t th e Grand Mast er of Maso ns in Pennsylva ni a dur ing t h e n ext two years, look for him i n the blue lodges," Bro. Carpenter said.

Now, 22 month s lat e r with just 57 days r em aining in hi s e rm Grand Master Carpenter has acco mp l i s h ed a le vel of act i v ity that ma y neve r aga i n be matc h e d in thi s or any other jurisd ctio n.

It helps to know th e man in understandin g the drive and a mbiti o n req uired to vis it 480 lodges as of October 31; to a tt e nd 1 ,0 38 separate acti v ities in just 674 days, and to ha ve supported the program s o f virtually e very b o d y in the Masonic fam ily in the state

It takes a ma n of exper e n ce; one t rain e d in the ways of Freemaso nry with decades of service t o hi s Grand Lodge, to d ed ca t e so many hou rs o f eac h day to t h e as k.

The Grand Maste r's day, and that of th e m e n who travel w ith him, typical l y begins at 3:30 p.m. at t h e Pl1i adelp hi a ai rp ort a nd e nds in the same spo t a t about 1:30 a.m.

It is t h e sch e dul e that has taken him to 35 sessions at the Pe nn sy lvania Youth Found ati on; 36 time s to th e Ma so nic Hom es at Elizabet htown, and 200 v is its to the Ma so ni c Temple in Ph i ladelp hia to co ndu c t th e routine business of the G rand Lodge. I t i s th e schedu l e that ha s allowed him to p res ent 651 Maso ni c Saint Award s, 747 Grand Master's meda llions and 1 ,293 packets of inform ative literature. In eac h case, he alone d es i gned or created th e mate ria l.

And i t is the sc h ed ul e that h as caused him to travel 145 thousand miles by air a nd 40 thousand miles by automob ile and, perhaps most importantly, it s the schedule that has al owed him to meet eye to eye , with more than 84 th ousa nd Mason s.

" D esp ite an arduous sc h ed ule, the Mason s of Pen nsy lvania ought to be told that I s till l ove them and th at t h e men who t rave l w ith me every day are st ill talkin g to each oth er, " th e Grand Master said.

" You ca n only succeed in a program like thi s if you have the prayers and support of many, many p eop e. a nd no one h as been more blessed than I in this undertaking, " Grand Master Carpenter concluded.

'Direct(y from the (jrand :Jv[aster PENNSYLVANIA MASONRY ANSWERS ITS CRITICS

Con ti n u ed from preceding page.

When a chu r c h sees itself as impotent: when it can see an en tire generation s lipping from under its in fluence, it may tend to become somewhat paranoid and look for ca uses everywh ere but within.

B ecause Masons are more than 3 mill i on strong in this nation, a n d because the fra t e rnity, lil'e so many parts of society today, stro n gly seeks t h e time and atte ntion of its members, the c hurches somet im es nterpret our compet t on for the hearts o f men as co mpe titi on for the so ul s of m e n.

That simp l y s not tru e. Freemaso n ry s not a re li g ion and h as never been a r e igio n. Th e frat e rnity do es not co m e c l ose to p ass ing for a re lig i on; it acks t h e basic e l eme nts of re li gion.

Fr eemaso n ry h as no dogma or theo l ogy. It offers no sac r a m e nts a nd d oes not cla im to ea d to sa l vation, by good works, secret knowledge, or any ot h e r means.

Freemasonry ha s a ways pa i d ts way in society. The Masonic T e mpl e in Phil ade phia pays m ore than $90 thousand each year to the city in property taxes. Ea c h of the 554 lodges in the state p ay taxes o n property and sa les taxes on purchases. I s the paying o f rea es t ate taxes and excise taxes so m ethin g you wou d expect of a re l igion?

Freemaso n ry has a l ways bee n a fr e nd a nd a ll y of r el i gio n . T h e fratern i ty s not nd ifferent to re li g ion. Whil e it will n ot dicta t e r e li g o u s practice, th e fratern i ty expects eac h membe r to p r act ce hi s faith a nd to p l ace h i s duty to God ( by w h atever n a m e H e i s known) above a ll ot h ers. Good Masons, as an h onest c l ergyman will tell yo u , are good ch urchmen. Free masonry is h av i ng a fa i th to li ve by; Freemasonry i s be ng a se lf t o li ve w th; Free m aso n ry s h avin g worthy ca u ses to li ve fo r ; Fr eemasonry is a never ending pu r s uit of excelle n ce.

Still, we c annot suppose th at Freema so ns a r e n ot without fault: that we do n ot at tim es inv it e critic i sm We do h ave th e occas i ona n -

dividual who, in anger or jest tells a cle rgy man that his lodge is his c hurch: that th e fraternity i s his religion.

I can only say that we, as F reemasons, 1ave fa il ed that Brother: we ha ve some how neglected his e du cation in the pract ice and princ iples of fraterna lis m.

Th e r ece nt pro n ounceme n t b y the Committee for Pastoral Research and Practices of the National Conference of Cath o ic Bishops wh i ch c la im ed t h at Fre e m aso n ry i s " irreconci ab l e" not on y w th Catholicism, but w i th all C h r i st an i ty, also co ntains a c riticism t h at is difficult to defend.

The comm ittee notes th e co ntent ofth e so l emn oath s r eq uire d of Maso n s in th e three symbo li c degrees as a basic prob l e m for Catho li cs.

Admitt e d y, the p e nalti es of thos e ob li gat i o n s ca ll for act o n s that can be cons i dered extreme l y cr u e l and unusual when l ooked at in l ight of today's society. T h ey are not t hat unusua l ( f o r exa mpl e, t h e cu ttin g off o f the h and of a thi ef) in some a r eas of the wor d eve n today, but they are cruel and unus u a l, none the less.

An attempt was mad e by the fraternity back n 1969 to soften th e imp act in th e m nd of th e cand id ate w h e n h e h ea rd those strange p enalties by exp laining before h e took th e obligation t h at th e p e na t i es were a nci ent in or i g in and were mer e l y sym b o li c.

St ill , the objection as s t ate d by th eCat h o li cco mmittee investigators of Freemasonry, h as m er it.

" Eith er th e oath s m ean what they say, or th ey do n o t " the repo rt says, add in g, " If they do m ea n w hat they say, the cand date is entering into a pact consent in g t o hi s own murd er by barbarous torture and muti l ation s h ould h e break it. "

" I f they do not mean w h at th ey say," th e report concl u des, "t h en he ( the cand i date) is swear ng hi ghsound i ng schoo boy non se nse on th e B ibl e, wh i c h verges on b l asp h emy. "

Th e p o i nt s we ll t a l,en M any Masons, mys e l f in c l ud ed, have been

truly concerned that the ancient physica l p enalt ies of th e ob li gat ions, while easily understood to t h e Mason w ho has h ad the opportunity to !'now and und e r sta nd t h em in t h eir historica l context, do sound strange and vi le to the stranger to Freemasonry.

Perhaps it is t i me for Pennsylvania to act. Accordin gly, I have dec ided to take th is opportunity, with the authority ves ted in me as the Orand Master of Masons in Pennsylvania, to announce before Masons and non-Masons alike that th e physical penalti es long associated w i th the three symbolic degrees of Pennsylvania fVlasonry are, as of th is date, to be removed from our obligat ion s and are to be rep l aced with penalties more meaningful and enforceable.

I m ightadd thatthisaction I have just taken is no t unprecedented. Severa o th er Gra nd Lodges have aready adjusted their ritua l s re l at i ve to the ancient penalties handed down from generat ion to generation.

A direct ve to that effect wil be i ss ue d from my office in Phi lade lp h i a in the morning and re leased to a ll l odges in Pennsy vania. At t he same t me, the Instructor of R tualistic Work and the Regional I nstru ctors w i ll begin the process of nforming the Schools of I nstru ct on of the new dialogue and required procedures for implementing this change throughout the Jurisdi ct on.

/{those who censure Freemasonry h ave any rema in s of modesty, if the asserters ofsuch malicio us utterings offalse c harges can ever blush, they are now put to their tr ial. For while th ey deal so free ly with th e principles and actions of persons who have been accepted in our anc i ent and honorable fraternity, they are only making known to thejudic i ous part of mank in d th e weakness of their own minds and the wickedness of their hearts.

Pe nn sy l vania Masonry extends its hand in fr iendshi p and brot herly ove and asks that ts cr iti cs accept us for what we are. and n ot what th ey t h in ! we are.

Autumn Day at the Homes

More th a n 3,000 Masons, their families and friends, took part in the first Autumn Day celebration at the Masonic Homes at Elizabethtown on Saturday, October 12.

The weather was almost exactly w hat yo u would expect for a day in Lancaster County in mid-October, although it was somewhat overcast and cool during the morning hours.

Brother Edmund W. Yost Jr., th e Dietary Manager for the Ma so ni c Homes, reported that 2.400 hot dogs, 3,600 sausage sandwiches, 2,220 ice cream coo l<.ies, 300 loaves of french br ead smothered in apple butter, and 170 gallons of coffee were served.
