The R.W. Gra nd Mast er, Bro. Carl W. Stenberg, Jr., in bri nging the mid-year mee ting o f the Gra n d Lodge to his home area, ma int ain s a c ustom begun in 1977 by the n Grand Mas ter jo hn L. McCain and contin ue d in 198 3 b y th en Grand Master Sa mu e l C. Williamso n .

The communica tio n offers the Grand Mas ter the opportunity to thank the Masons of the Gr eater Pittsburgh Ar ea for their many acts of support during his administration of the Grand Lodge

Included in the fes tivities is a dinner for Masons and their ladies ; entertainment for the ladies while the Grand Lodge is in session, and entertai nment for Masons and their ladies immediately following the communication.

Tickets to the Grand Master's Dinner which is scheduled fo r two locations , the

dining rooms in bot h Syria Mosque and the Masonic Temple in Oakland, have already been distributed to the lodges through the District Deputy Grand Masters in the western part of the state. The cost of the dinner is Sl2.50 per person.

If you live in the western part of the state and have not yet purchased a ticket, please contact your Distric t Depu ty Grind Mas ter. For those in o ther parts of the sta te who may be in Pittsburgh for the meeting, a few tickets are being sold at the Office of the Con tinu ed on page 8

Two hun d r e d yea r s ago this month , fift y-fiv e men fro m all of t he states except Rh ode Is land began assembling in Phila d elp hi a to un d ertake the complicated process of r e fo rmin g the national gove rn m e nt . By t h e en d of the summ e r they h ad es tab li shed a new system b ased u p o n feder alist p r i n ciples. On Sep tembe r 17, 17 8 7, th irty-nine o f the r emai nin g fo rt y -tw o r e presentat i ves s ig n ed th e d oc ume n t out li ning this n ew gov ern m e n t- t h e Cons ti tut ion of th e Un i te d State s .

T h e d e le g a t e s t o the Constitut ional Co n vent io n rep r ese nted a very h igh level o f t a le n t a nd a bi li ty; th e y were among th e bes t that t h e new nation h ad to offe r. T h irty-one of them had go n e to co llege at a time when higher ed u cat io n was rare T hirt y-two were e it he r law ye r s or lawye r -farmers; t welve were s ucce s sful m e rchants or bu s i n ess m e n ; e ig ht were gent leman fa r m e rs wi th s ubstant ial land hold i ngs ; and t h r ee we r e ph ysicians Most had exte n s ive expe r ience in poli t ics. Th i rty

men had served i n the Revolutionar y War and eight had s igned t he Declaration of Independence Although ranging in age from 26 (Jona t han Da yton from New jerse y) to 81 (Benjamin Franklin from Pennsylvan ia), the framers o f the Constitution were a youthful group of m en, with an average age of 43.

A number of delegates also had something else in common-they were Masons . At least eleven men a r e known to have been members of the Fratern ity prior to the open i ng of the Convent ion; another two jo i ned afterwards

Fifteen others had possib le Mas Gnic connections, a lt hough their membersh i ps cannot be de fin i tel y confirmed. Altho u gh probably not a majo rit y at the Convent ion , the Masons nonetheless counted amo n g themselves two of the most promin e nt indi vid uals in the late e ighteenth century American polit ics-Geo r ge W a shington , the president of t he Co n ve n tion, and Ben jamin F r anklin, the el d er statesman Two other leading delegates- Alexander Hamilton , a staunch suppor t er of a strong federal government, and James Madison , t he so-called " Father of the Constitution" - m ay also have been Masons at some point in their careers. In certain important respects , Masonic ideals and princip les influenced , or at least were in accord w i th, the way business was handled at the Convention , as well as i ts r esu l ts. From th e beg in n ing , the delegates decided to conduc t their d iscussions in secret. They did this not because of a n anti-
