Annual Grand Communication is Held in Hershey

Mar rj n Hopkins, D.D. , one of th e mini sters from Bro. Kurtz's c hurch.

John Wanamaker, w ho was born on J uly II , 1838, makin g this the 15 0th an ni ver sary of hi s b irth , ro se fr o m a very poor backgrou nd. His fir s t j o b was as a n errand boy mak in g $ 1. 25 a wee k in 1852
He opened his firs t s tore in 186 1, a nd quick l y became one of the richest a n d m os t p owerf ul men in the U nited S ta tes . His fa m e, however, was made in h is extraordinar y public life fou nded on hi s phi la nthrop y. Bro. Wanamaker was a lso known for hi s wo rk w ith th e Presbyterian C h u rch, the Y.M.C.A., a n d education. He founded a n institute for poor yo u th s, h el ped found the Pres byteria n H ospita l, a nd se nt m ercy ships to the starving du ri ng Wor ld War I. For his grea t wor ks, Wanamaker was made a Mason-at-Sight in 1898, a nd affi li ated wi th Frie nds hi p Lodge No 400 in J enkin tow n in 1900, whe r e h e was Mas te r in 1905. T he books, a lo n g with a bus t of Brother Wanamaker, were assembled in a n enormou s mahogan y bookcase w ith glass do ors removed from t h e Wanamaker Museum whid1 a lso di splays objects fro m the Grand Lodge Museum w hic h had b ee n don a ted b y Bro. Wanamaker. T his may be viewed at th e lower level o f the rear staircase . In th e M u se um , curre ntl y disp layed are two large pieces from th e Wanamaker Museum: A replica of th e Signer's Desk which se r ved the earl y Federal Government w hen th ey met in Philadel phia from 1790 to 1800, a nd a rep lica of th e Rising Sun C h a ir. The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project Comes to the Grand Lodge Library
O n J a nuary 5 th a nd 6th, 1988, Barbara Kurimchak of the P enn sy l va ni a Newsp a p er Proj ect ca me to the G ra nd Lodge Library to ca ta logue th e n ewsp ape r s in our collec ti on as part of th e Pennsylvania News pa per Proj ect. This Proj ect, fund ed as p a rt o f th e U nited States News p aper Project by the Na ti o nal Endowment fo r th e Humanities, h as as its objectives, to find, catalogue, a nd microfi l m every n ewspape r eve r publis h ed within the Co mm o n wea lth o f P ennsyl va nia . T h e G rand Lodge Librar y is of specia l va lue to this Proj ec t because of its rather unique coll ec tion Fifty-one separate titles h ave bee n cata log u ed in the Grand Lodge Library thus far.
Some o f th e n ewsp apers a r e represe nted by only one iss ue, but oth ers h ave substa nti a l runs. Ma n y of th ose si n g le iss u es co n ta in th e story o f th e la yi n g of the Co rnersto ne of the Temple in 1868, and of th e Temple's Dedica tion in 1873. Of the Mason ic n ewspa p er Th e Keystone, the Temple holds a n earl y complete run , 1867-1905. T h ere are iss ues of m a n y ne wspa p ers published durin g th e 1820 's and 183 0' s, when the Anti-Masonic Pa rty was very ac ti ve, so th at both si des of the story are represented. As work on our va luable collec ti o n continues, the Library and Museum s taff find m ore n ews p a p er s tu cked away, so that Ms. Kurimchak w ill be in vi ted back.

It to ok th e Commonwea l th of Pennsyl vania and th e n the Fed era l Government sever a l years to und ers tand th a t thi s was no t ju s t a librar ian's a muse m ent, but that newspapers, by their very nature as dai ly o r wee kl y pub lica tio n s, do not last lon g, th e mo st important single reason be ing th a t especially after 18 60, the y were printed o n ver y cheap paper w hi ch disintegrates rap idl y Therefore, wi thout this Project, a ll of the va lua ble firs t- and seco nd -hand inform a tion wou ld ha ve bee n lost forever.
