The Hailing Sign is a novel by Bro. Steven B. Fink of Ma cSa nde rs Brotherhood Lodge No. 773 in Ro x borough, Pennsy lvania. T h e book is not about Freemasonry per se, but th e fra tern it y

" I am you r friend; I am yow· guide. I am yo ur brother; I a m a Shepherd's Son," and rescue one of their own. Mycroft takes us from Israel to Phil adelp hi a, into the Sanctum Sanctorium, a nd receives the instructions to "b ring th e brot her home."

The new l y made brother h e is to resc ue, Lee Sinclair, a Corpora l in the U.S. Marines, now sits as a hostage in the U.S . Embassy in Te hra n , Iran, g u ar ded tw ent y- four hours a da y.

Arthur R. Diamond Scholarship Awarded

We, as th e reader, are take n deep into th e broth er hood , as well as into th e ritu a ls of the fraternity. We wa tc h as Mycroft is put to the test at every turn , girded with his d e ter mination to perform hi s ob li ga tion . He is mad e to en dure every for ce kn ow n to man by those he loves as well as by th ose who hate him. We actually watch Mycroft's mind at work. We become conv inced that we and Mycroft are one. We feel what it's like to be manipulated a nd stroked, tortured and u sed, and h a ted and loved . All this we s ubmit o ur se lv es to willingly, for it is o ur Obligation which Mycroft must carry o ut. For him to fail means we fail , and his success is ours also.

We find a renewed pride in our Fraternity throu g h Mycroft, one ili a t through the years may h ave dull ed, but thi s book s ha1·pens that blunted edge, a nd brin gs u s face to face w ith o ur Obligation, a nd asks us, ju st how far will we travel whe111 we see our Hailing Sign?
