My Brethren:

Freem aso nry, a Brotherhood of Me n und er the Fa th er h ood of God, is perhaps ou r g r eatest a nd s implest definition, yet one whose precept we frequent ly fail to practice, an d I wou ld s u spect one th a t m any of our Brothers fail to apprec ia te or even compre h end I u se this colu mn to re late a n exper ie n ce I had w hich I think describes w h a t might be th e essence of F reemasonry, a t leas t, to th e indi vidu a l Me mb er.

One Sa turd ay a fternoon , after wor king in m y garde n , I went indoors to lie on the bed and lis ten to a Pe nn Sta te foo tball ga m e. The te lephone rang, a nd the caller was a represe ntati ve o f the Women' s Aid Soc ie ty, calling fr o m Texas She to ld me th a t a young lad y was on an a i rp la n e schedu led to la nd at the Phil ade lphia a i rport in o n e h our. Her sis ter, who lived in New J er sey, had bee n injured in a n auto m obi l e acc id e nt , an d s h e was arriv ing to take her h ome to Texas. Sh e kn ew no one to co n tac t and h ad n o way to ge t to New J ers ey The on ly thin g s he cou ld te ll the Women's Aid Socie ty was

th a t " h er daddy was a Mason."

This lad y ca lled th e Gra nd Lodge of Texas w h o referred h er to my o ffi ce. O n e of th e em pl oyees wh o happened to be in the offi ce on Sa turd ay gave her m y h o m e telephone number

I went to th e a irport a nd a fte r a twoh our sea rch was able to loca te the g irl. I lea rn ed from a Brother Maso n w h o was a sec urit y officer h ow to ge t to the sma ll town in New Jersey. On the way there, the g irl told me that s h e n eed ed to r ent a truck to carry her s ister 's furniture a nd clothing to Texas. T h ey wanted to leave the n ext day.

Upo n ar ri vi ng at th e loca ti o n in New

J er sey, I was unab le to contact the local Lodge or the Gra nd Secre tary o f New J e r sey. I was a lso un a bl e to rent a truck th at la te at night.

Bei n g close to th e De lawa r e border I ca ll ed th e Gra n d Secr etary of Delaware at his hom e. He in turn m a de arra n ge m e nts for four Me mbers o f one o f De laware's Lodges to come over Sun day morning, ren t a truck, load it and g et the gir ls s tarted for Texas I stayed until 3 a.m.

h e lpin g them pack the i r belongi ngs in boxes whi c h I was ab le to obtain from a lo ca l store.

I t is not s ig nifi ca nt th a t I was in vol ved o r , for th a t m a tter, th a t a n y s ing le person was in vo l ved in this episode. The individua l is not important. What i s important is our feeling o f the need to respond due to a Masonic obliga tion. W hat is important is that fi ve words, "My daddy was a Mason," g i ven to a non-Masonic orga ni za tion in Texas prec ipitated a re sponse th a t in vo l ve d fou r s tates across a con tinent. What is important is that it reveals th e continuing essence o f Freemasonry, "The Broth er hood of Man."

As long as we, as indi vidua l Members, fe e l the need to res pond to this ass umed ob liga ti o n , we ca rry on the proud tradition cred ited to th e Craft. We justify o ur exi s ten ce We g i ve rea so n for an inte rest by ot h ers. We r ea ll y m a in tain a r easo n for being. If eac h Brother wo uld express a nd respond to this moti vatio n to practice thi s "essence" - w h a t a g ia nt step for our s urviva l!
