Friend to Friend is Reaching Out!

No sooner wa s a Friend to Friend brochure in the hands of Bro Karl A. Hoffman of Frackvill e Lodge No 737 in the 58th Mas o nic District, when he asked for two more cop i es. He said that he knew right away of three good m e n who would want to know more about the M asonic Fraternity. They are all in the family- his two sons -in-l aw and a grandson. When he asked for the Friend to Friend brochures , Bro. Hoffman wrote, "I am e ighty- e ight years old, a wheelchair resident of this nur s ing home (Mountain View Manor in Coal Town s hip) , and proudly, a fifty-five year Master Mason "

With all sc h ed ules being met by April 1, each of the 503 Lodges in Pe nn sylvan i a would have a twelve-Member Friend to F riend Ta s k Force , made up of four Committees of t hree Brethren each. It is the assignm ent for e ac h of the se Task Force Members - numbering more th an 6,000 across the Commonwealth - to spread them se lves o ve r a large extent of territory and , Friend to Friend, te ll th e story of Freemasonry to one good man a month

A tw el v e -Memb e r Fr i end to Friend Ex ecutive Task Forc e, chaired by R.W. Grand Maser Hohenshildt, is re s pon s ibl e for the leadership, planning and admini stration of th e all-Member involvement program.

In the first four months of this year, there has been a high le v el o f r ec ognition generated for Friend to Friend.

Every Ma soni c Lodg e Hall , York Rite Meeting pla c e, Scottish Rite Cath e dral and Shrine Temple in Pennsyl v ania has be en presented a three -by-two-foot gold-framed , full co l o r reproduction of the magnificent Friend to Friend: From Centuries Past-Through Centur es to Come watercolor. Friend to Friend is

Reaching Out!

D • d D • d is reaching out in Pennsylvan ia r rlen to r rlen r e lating the character of Freemasonry: Who we are , what w e stand for, what we do and how we give "Help to a Brother " and "Help to Mankind."

Friend to Friend is "The hand s of f r iendship " passing the word to help good men - in our families, in our neighborhoods, at wor k, in our churches to know about and appreciate the values , principl es and benefits of the world's oldest and most dynamic Fraternity As the colorful Friend to Friend brochure dramatically depicts, "From Centuries Past Through Centuries to Come" - from Bro. George Washington to Astronaut Bro. "Buzz" Aldrin - "Freemasonry embodies the moral fiber and purpos e for the Fraternity to soar int o th e Twenty-First Century and b eyond."

Friend to Friend i s an educational process : Brethren are able to let good men know about Freemasonry and then be available to answer the qu e stions they surely will want to ask. Considerable awareness of the Fraternity and the Appendant and Affiliated Bodies was fostered when more than three million tabloids , Freemasonry in Pennsylvania and Around the World were distributed to three-quarters of the homes in Pennsylvania i n conjunct i on with the Installation of Bro. Georg e H. Hohenshildt as R.W Grand Master.

All of the elements are in place for a su ccessful Friend to Friend program to be totally effective "Friend to Friend is a program for every Mason," R W Grand Master Hohenshildt pointed out and asked , " Is there a Man who doesn t have a friend or a relative of good character who w o uld appreciate knowing about the Fraternity?"

On e month after his Installat on, Grand Master Hohenshildt sent e v ery Penn sylvania Mason a letter detailing the importance of the Friend to Friend program and asking personal support With ea ch letter was a copy of th e Friend to Friend brochure which the Mason wa s asked to give to a friend to help him appreciate the Fraternity and then respond positively to his questions when the friend returned the bro chure.

Bro. Karl A. Hoffman (right), eighty- eigh t and a Mason for more than fifty-five years, puts Friend to Friend into action by asking for additional brochures. He is shown reviewing the Freemasonry in Pennsylvania and Around the World

The Grand Master Speaks •••

Brethren:

"Snow, snow go away and come again some other day!"

That o d saying comes qu i ckly to mind since th is Winter has been o n e of t he snow iest and co l dest in h istory. It may be true that th is Winter's weather set a l-time records; but, from one Mason to another, I know it is true that I have had the greatest Winter of my life!

From the minute that I walked across the stage, slow y , in the Scottish Rite Cathedral and was Installed as Grand Maste r and from the moment Lena and I walked into the Zembo Temple banquet hal l among hundreds of the world's best peop le and amid the decorat ions of Friend to Friend balloons , this indeed h as been the greatest W inter of our lives!

The respons b il ity may be great, but the burden s l ight. I have sa id many times that I will enjoy my term as your Grand Master; however , the abominabl e snow and ice cau sed me to cance l my appearances at fifteen Masonic Presentations, dinners, and Fraternal Meetings (a record of dubious distinction). But, I did not cancel th i rty - eight other Meetings, Presentations and Visitations All of that was just in January, February and early March - fewer than the f irst seventy d ay s as Grand Master.

One of the most grat fying even in gs that I sha l never fo r get was the Wednesday of the March Quarterly Communication. That was a Meeting that I seriously cons i dered cancel i ng. But, when I opened Grand Lodge, there were about seventy-f ive percent of the District Deputy Grand Masters present, one hundred percent of the Elected and Appointed Officers, and about twenty-five hardy Brethren. I was most apprec i ative, and it was a special pleasure for me to go into the Body of the Open Lodge and greet each one personally. Bret h ren, my experiences thus far as Grand Master convince me tha t Freemasonry is "boom ng." The sp i r it, the interest, and the enthusiasm that I have witnessed h ere i n

Pennsylvania; that I found during my visit to the Grand Lodge of Lou isiana; and t hat I encounte red i n my attendance at the Conference of the Grand Masters of Nort h Amer ca at Crysta l City, Virgi ni a, c ear ly show that Freemasons are mov i ng i n great ly increased harmony and with even greater significance of p u rpose.

In Pennsylvania, our Grand L odge planning and the regu ar implementation of those plans i s a daily process Our three priorities: Friend to Friend, Youth, and Education have been received very favorably. The Grand Master's Off i ce, the Grand Treasurer's Office and the Grand Secretary's Office have been funct i oning w i th dispatch. The Masonic Homes have been operating w ith great u n de r stand ing of our M ss i on T h e Pennsy lvania Youth Fo u ndation, The Pennsy l vania Masonic Foundat i on for the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Among Chi l dren, The Mason i c Library and Museum of Pennsylvania and The Pennsylvania Masonic Foundation for Leadership and Management, Inc. are all pursuing their objectives and goals w ith great skill , dedication and vigor.

We have challenged o u r entire Membersh i p to the goals of Friend to Friend. We have sent every Member a letter of our concern for the future and we have sought h s total support We included in that lette r a copy of the brochure, "Friend to Friend - From Centuries Past through Centuries to Come " We have asked every Lodge to appoint four Committees of three Members each as a Task Force to enhance and carry out the Friend to Friend Program. I like to think of those Committees as commun i cating the values of Freemasonry over a large extent of territory- symbolically, one traveling north; one south; one east; and one west. We are extreme l y excited as to its immediate success.

The Youth programs need and deserve our sincere attention and support. Like our Fraternity, the

Grand Master's Travels

Masonic Youth programs face the same declining Membership problems that caused your Grand Master to initiate the Friend to Friend Program. Formulating plans to enhance leadership , at both the youth and adult levels, is essential. Creating viable programs to enrich the work of each of the Youth groups must be accompl ished . The responsibility to secure the future of our Masonic Youth groups belongs to the Pennsylvania Youth Foundation and that involves the Grand Lodge and each Member of the B l ue Lodges of our Jurisdiction. We must be successful in preservi n g our Masonic Family

Our new Masonic Education Program for Lodge Officers and Members being held in conjunction with the Schools of Instruction has far exceeded expectations. There ha v e been positive reactions to an extremely well thought-out and thorough ly presented program. The ten programs i n the Education Program will be presented initially to Lodge Officers and Members in the Sc h ools of Instructi on, but they can be given in Lodges as we ll. Learning about Freemasonry must be a consis t ent quest for all Maso n s as we p u rsue the many pa t hs of Maso n ic Education.

We are going forward in Freemasonry to the best of our ability With your continued "help, aid and ass istance, SUCCESS will crown our efforts."

The Grand Secretary's Desk ••••

My Brethren:

At th e December Quarterly Communication of the Grand Lodge, a change of some sign ifi cance took place relative to Masonic Membership in the Jurisdiction of Pennsylvania . Prior to this time, the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania prohibited any of our Brothers from holding Membersh ip in more than one Lodge at the same time. Thi s not on y prevented Pennsylvania Freemasons from joining a seco nd Lodge, but also prohibited anyone from another Jurisdiction belonging to a Pennsylvania Lodge w hile retaining Membership in that Jurisdiction. This Law is now changed.

According to a change in The Ahiman Rezon which was adopted at t he December Communication , a Pennsylvania M ason may now hold Membership in one other Lodge, either in Penn sy lvania or in another recognized Grand Juri sdi cti o n. At the same time, a Member of a Lodge in another Grand Jurisdiction may now hold M embership in one Penn sylvania Lodge.

This c hange in our Law was made after mu ch discussion. It had been presented to the Grand Lodg e Officers a number of tim es in the past for considerat ion. Each time it was f elt that the negativ es outweighed the positive. It carries w ith it the increased duties of trying to track our M embers hip in other Jurisdictions.

Th er e were seve ral decid ing factors which led to th e Grand Lo dge Officers agreeing to place it on the agenda for ap prova l of the Grand Lodge.

Many of our M embers are Entered into a Lodg e where they have close ties, either family or co mmunity. Th ey then relocated to ot her commun iti es in our State or in

another State and now wish to remain Members of their Home Lodges due to these ties. That decision precludes their cha nces to be active in Freemasonry on a Blue Lodge leve l where they now reside . This became a primary factor in the decision to recommend Dual Membership.

We also recognized that Dual Membership would offer Lodges the opportunity to use leadership residing within their communities who hold Primary Membership in another locality In addition , it would also provide for additional income to the Subordin ate Lodges.

We realize that until all the wrinkles are ironed out of the program there is going to be co nfusion withi n the sy stem. Any questions should b e referred to the Sec retary of your Lodge

Two points are sig nific a nt that each of our Members shou ld rea ize: (1) A Petitioner whose Primary Membership is in another Jur is diction must reside in Pennsylvania to hold Dual Membership in our Jurisdiction. The only exception is for one who initially belonged to a Pennsyl vania Lodge , moved to a new Jurisdiction and resigned from his Pennsylvania Lodg e to join there. He may now, if he wishes, Affiliate w ith his original Lodge by beco min g a Dual Member. (2) If a Member holds Dual Membership and is suspended for any reason from his primary Lodge, he wi ll be ipso facto suspended from the secondary Lodge All other rules govern ing Dual M e mbership are in the hand s of th e Secretary and are ba sica lly procedural.

We trust that th is c hang e will be a benefit to our Members and our Lodg es.
