American Romanticism: The Pennsylvania Ghost Stories Reverence of Nature in the with Dennis Strain Arts of 19th Century America WEDNESDAY, OCT. 30, 2 P.M. FRIDAYS, OCT. 25, NOV. 8, 15, 22, DEC. 6, 1 P.M. Life Long Learning Center $25
Romanticism is a term that is associated with boundless imagination and potential. Artists, writers and musicians in America reacted against reason and celebrated natural beauty, the cult of the “noble” savage uncorrupted by civilization, mysticism and individualism. These creative individuals found faith in the symbols of nature, myth and community folklore, and promoted a taste for wild landscapes, picturesque rusticity and the frontier. American Romantics looked to the American wilderness as the roots of a unique American character. Composers will be introduced, and featured writers and artists include Bryant, Cooper, Poe, Irving and the Hudson River Artists, including Cole, Church, Bierstadt, Durand and Moran. This course will investigate the relationship of the arts and literature in a multimedia format. The instructor is Cindy Rose, professor of humanities, Harrisburg Area Community College. Call ext. 14509 to register for this class.

Virtual Reality and its Benefits for Older Adults Emily Connors, the new therapeutic recreation/ life enrichment supervisor for the Masonic Health Care Center, has brought one of her interests to Masonic Village - virtual reality. She has researched how this technology can be beneficial to senior living. Virtual reality uses computer-generated simulation to immerse the viewer into a 360-degree environment that responds to his or her interaction. Proven benefits of virtual reality include decreased pain and distraction (reduction in
stress) for residents in pain or with dementia. Mental stimulation, reminiscence, relaxation, range of motion, engagement and stimulation are encouraged through virtual reality. Virtual reality applications that are geared specifically for older adults such as travel, ocean scenes and more allow the viewer to experience a favorite town, city or a vacation of yesteryear. Viewers also have the opportunity to have new experiences such as swimming with the dolphins, seeing the Northern Lights or visiting a beautiful Cathedral in Spain. Virtual reality can be used either as an individual intervention or in small group settings.
