NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

A Bad Day at the Village is Still Better Than Most Days Anywhere Else Cindy Phillips, executive director

Writing this “new year” article each year - to sit and reflect on the many wonderful things to be grateful for - makes it a little easier to cope with winter’s cold, gray skies. No matter what happened, this is an amazing place where we are blessed with incredible residents, staff, volunteers and donors. A bad day at the Village is still better than most days anywhere else! 2018 was a positive year for our community, with a few particularly notable accomplishments. First, we remain an overall 5-star skilled nursing facility through Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and we were deficiency-free for a second year in a row in our personal care survey, as well. Our nursing, housekeeping, social services, therapeutic recreation, therapy, maintenance and all dining and culinary services staff continue to work very hard to maintain this success. What we do above and beyond clinical care – music therapy, resident choirs, farm markets, bonfires, spiritual care services, special events to honor veterans, etc. – also makes us special. In these times, we see our Mission of Love at work!

Last year brought many changes to on-campus dining options. We added service on the Trexler Terrace, giving residents and their guests a chance to dine outdoors while overlooking the Formal Gardens. You can now enjoy live music during Sunday brunch at the Restaurants at Grand Lodge Hall, and the expanded tavern hours, including the popular, "Thirsty Third Thursdays,” has made the Grand Lodge Hall a destination again. The Restaurant at Eisenlohr also underwent renovations in 2018. Its new decor and quieter atmosphere has pleased regular diners. Three Loaves Café introduced new menu items, which are now available until 4 p.m. daily. This is a bustling place to grab a bite between activities. The Freemasons Cultural Center, which opened in 2000 , was due for some minor updates last year. We saw major improvements to the Brossman Ballroom, Lodge Multipurpose Room and the Deike Auditorium. Our residents and visitors are greeted with a nice blend of old and new - showcasing our Masonic history and incorporating some new colors and complementary artwork and furniture. Our children's home finished up cottage renovations and saw five seniors graduate high school in 2018. Our program has tremendous success in helping our kids seek higher education and currently has nine alumni in college or trade schools. Right next door, the Bleiler Caring Cottage had renovations of its own; all residents now have their own bedrooms.

Another major accomplishment was the completion of 72 new cottages on Umbaugh, Guest, Commandery and Templar Drives, welcoming over 100 new residents. This addition, along with the start of the Sycamore Townhomes, helps us meet our wait list needs. We finished 2018 averaging over 96 percent in retirement living occupancy - amazing for a community of our size. This demand is the strongest driver of our growth. We are grateful to be able to serve more residents in this way.

6

Finally, in between snowstorms, we completed the Village Green Circle project, paving the entire circle and the roadway from the McKee arches to the Berks Building and installing curbing and walking paths along the roadway, making it safer and - once we finish landscaping in the spring - more picturesque than ever. In 2019, we have only two major projects: adding seven apartments in the former child care center once that service moves to the new U-GRO building and completing the Townhomes at Sycamore Square. By summer, half of the 48 units will be ready for move-in, with the remaining 24 units completed by December. This year, we will continue to work with Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Health to ensure the

medical practice at the front of campus serves our residents and employees with more services and extended hours. We also will continue to grow our hospice, home health and home care services, as well as the Masonic Village Pharmacy – services critical to enabling residents to return from hospital stays sooner, and to remain safely in retirement living longer. Additionally, we hope to find a dialysis partner to service campus and expand other outpatient services. With these additional services in place, you can continue seeing the Masonic Village therapists you worked with during a transitional care unit (TCU) stay even after you have returned home. There will be more updates to come on this project. Technology will remain important to our campus in 2019. In addition to the Village Connect portal, our Masonic Village Net package will be rolled out to the rest of campus. We are excited, and believe this very competitive service to be only a start to the home automation and in-home medical services of the future. While many things change each year at the Village, we never lose sight of our Mission of Love. We are here to serve and happy you have chosen to call this beautiful place your home. Happy New Year - may yours be filled with peace, hope and the best of health! Interiors of renovated cottages at the Masonic Children's Home
