Songwriter, Musician, Historian: Jeff Stike

FRIDAY, JAN. 6, AT 2PM

Deike Auditorium

In Jeff Stike’s music, you will hear an Appalachian bluegrass/gospel heritage mix with southern and classic rock guitar. Jeff states: “It’s the story of the common man and common trials and tribulations. I’ve put a lot of time and work into writing and recording these songs. I do it because I love it, and I love how the music has introduced me to other friends of like mind.” In 2013, he released “Gettysburg in Words and Music,” a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. In January 2015, he released “Color Bearer,” the memoirs of John A. Stikeleather of the 4th North Carolina Infantry, which he narrated and co-edited with Matt Kineke. Jeff combines his love of music and history and puts his heart and soul into writing and recording songs that reflect both of these interests, as well as his patriotism. His love of country comes through in his vocals as he accompanies his vocals on guitar.

Elvis Impersonator, Jeff Krick

SUNDAY, JAN. 8, 2 P.M.

Brossman Ballroom, Salon I

Jeff Krick is an award-winning Elvis tribute artist who makes his home in PA, but travels all over the country performing. When Jeff was a child, he would sing along to Elvis’ records. He would watch his concerts and movies, spending countless hours practicing Elvis’ songs, stage presence, movements, etc. As a teenager and adult, Jeff sang with several bands. Since becoming an Elvis tribute artist in 1990, Jeff has performed around the United States and Canada at many casinos, concerts, clubs, private and corporate parties, fundraisers, conventions, carnivals, fairs and onboard cruise ships in the Caribbean and Bermuda. He has won many awards and contests for his unbelievable voice and authenticity in bringing Elvis to the stage. He captures every detail of Elvis’ live performances — his look, stage presence, charisma and, most importantly, voice. You will feel like you’re watching Elvis himself on stage doing what the King loved doing: entertaining the people!

Global Climate Change and the Future of Arctic Indigenous Peoples

TUESDAY, JAN. 17, 10:30 A.M.

Keystone Room

This talk by Dr. Robert Wheelersburg focuses on the role that global climate change is playing in the ongoing survival of Arctic indigenous peoples like the Inuit (Eskimo) and the Saami (Laplanders). The melting of the circumpolar ice in the northern hemisphere is diminishing the indigenous peoples’ traditional resources base, especially sea mammals like walrus and seal. The impact on their resource base could lead to potential loss of their cultures that have survived for 1,000 years. Dr. Wheelersburg received a doctorate in anthropology and Arctic Studies from Brown University. He began conducting field research in the Arctic during the early 1980s by herding reindeer with Saami families in Sweden. Sponsored by the Lifelong Discovery Fund.
