NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION
Spiritual Care for the Soul Rev. A. Preston VanDeursen, director of spiritual care The eminent philosopher Teilhard de Chardin put it so memorably, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Do you ever get tired of trying to take care of all your “stuff?" There is more to us than our possessions. We have an inner life — a spiritual side — which, while invisible to the outside world, is very real and of utmost importance. Your soul is a living thing that needs nurturing, care and attention. I am intrigued with Martha Stewart. She once devoted an entire show to the cleaning and care of wicker baskets: using the right soap, the right brushes, drying them, stacking and hanging them properly. She said it takes her a full day to maintain all her baskets. She also promised all her viewers that, if we took good care of our wicker baskets, they would bring us a lot of joy for years to come. As I watched this amazing basket fanatic, I began to wonder: Who, in their right mind, cares that much about their baskets? How can we be that obsessive over the non-essentials in life?
18
We fill our lives with stuff. We love stuff. We want to take good care of our stuff. That’s why Martha Stewart is so popular. For you, it may not be wicker baskets, but it’s probably something — your car,
your clothes, your bank account, your computer or whatever. Or, perhaps you are not so focused on your possessions, but rather on taking care of your body or improving your appearance. Either way, you give considerable time and thought to your external life—your physical property. Before you know it, you are spending all your free time maintaining your stuff and don't have any time for the things that really matter. One of them is the caring of our soul. We are blessed at the Masonic Village to have a Spiritual Care Department to help our residents and staff with their soul care, from worship on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, to a variety of Bible studies, to communion services, prayers and individual meetings upon request. There are many spiritual opportunities listed within this publication that can help you care for your soul, which is what we have left when we are without the "stuff" in our lives. The Spiritual Care Department also visits the local hospitals and is on call 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year. We are here to help you care for that which you will have long after our bodies have worn out. If you are looking for a New Year’s resolution or a gift to give yourself this year, take a look at the gift of caring for your soul.
