NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

What You Should Know About Flu Season Donna Hershey, director of personal care and outpatient services As summer dwindles and we anticipate the colors of fall, it is time to gear up for flu season. Influenza (flu) is a contagious disease that spreads across the U.S. annually, usually from October through May. We are working to make this year a mild one for flu cases. Flu is caused by influenza viruses and is spread mainly by coughing, sneezing and close contact. There are multiple flu viruses which change annually; thus, a new vaccine is made yearly to protect against the three to four viruses projected to cause disease in the upcoming flu season. While receiving the vaccine doesn’t guarantee protection against getting the flu, it certainly lessens the severity should you get the flu and helps you from spreading flu to others. Flu symptoms usually occur suddenly and last several days. Symptoms vary by age but usually include: fever/chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache and a runny or stuffy nose. In its severest form, flu can also lead to pneumonia and overwhelming infection. There are multiple types of flu vaccines available. People over 65 have two flu shots available, a regular dose (which can be either a tri- or quadrivalent vaccine) or a high-dose vaccine formulated specifically for those 65+. Like in years past, the pharmacy ordered the high-dose vaccine for our “flu clinics”

this year. The high-dose vaccine contains a higher dose of antigen than the regular vaccine to provide a more robust immune response for those over 65. We will be providing flu shots for our residents and staff (if under 65, they will receive a quadrivalent vaccine to protect themselves as well as you). Both vaccines are preservative free, latex free and contain no live flu virus - in other words, the vaccines cannot cause the flu. Medicare B and most Medicare Advantage plans cover the flu vaccine. To stop the spread of flu, STAY HOME if you aren’t feeling well - except to receive medical care. Avoid crowds or other social gatherings, WASH YOUR HANDS often, and get a flu shot! Antivirals such as Tamiflu® (generic oseltamivir), Relenza® (generic zanamivir) or Rapivab® (generic peramivir) can be used to treat the flu but must be started as early as possible - usually within 48 hours of symptoms - to be most helpful. Treatment also includes adequate fluids, rest and acetaminophen (Tylenol®) for fever. Stay tuned for more information concerning locations, dates and times of the flu clinics! Get your flu shot as one component of maintaining your health.
