For Republicans, that allowed a dark horse, “everybody’s second choice,” to emerge with the nomination. Days after the election, South Carolina started its secession process and tried to convince other states to follow suit. The nation was falling apart. What would the new president do?

OPPORTUNITIES World Vision

On the third Friday of each month for the past few years, a group of residents have been departing at 1 p.m. and traveling a short distance together in a vehicle (provided) to the Global Distribution Center of World Vision (opposite our campus on Deer Run Road) where “volunteers are integral to its mission.” There, World Vision volunteer coordinator Laura Kennedy shows what corporate-donated products (usually all manner of apparel) are to be sorted, categorized and boxed for domestic and international distribution. Volunteers sit and stand at big tables with large, wire crates of unsorted merchandise close by and “work” (and chat) at their own speeds for one to two hours, depending on how they feel or how much there is to do. When they feel they’ve had enough, they return to the clubhouse and look forward to the next third Friday of the month! World Vision tells us “our volunteer efforts serve the world’s poorest children and families in nearly 100 countries. By volunteering, we are aiding communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling

10

the causes of poverty and injustice.” Television media frequently depicts World Vision personnel in the midst of disaster areas worldwide, such as the Nepal earthquake, hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, etc. Masonic Village coordinators David Nimick and Linda Kable would welcome anyone who thinks he/she might like to “give it a try” on Friday, Nov. 15, or any 3rd Friday following. If you have questions or would like to join the fun, please contact David at 412-7493885 or nimickda@wmcnnect.com, or Linda at 412-741-8696 or kable.linda@gmail.com

LIFELONG LEARNING Music as a Mirror of History - Part 4

In Music as a Mirror of History, Great Courses favorite Professor Robert Greenberg, of San Francisco Performances, returns with a fascinating and provocative premise: Despite the abstractness and the universality of music — and our habit of listening to it divorced from any historical context — music is a “mirror” of the historical setting in which it was created. Indeed, certain works of music do not just mirror the general spirit of their time and place, but can even explicitly evoke specific historical events. As Professor Greenberg demonstrates in this course, music carries a rich spectrum of social, cultural, historical and philosophical information, all grounded in the life and experience of the composer — if you’re aware of what you’re listening to. In these lectures, you’ll explore how composers convey such explicit information, evoking specific states of mind and giving voice to communal emotions, all colored by their own personal experience. Music lovers and history enthusiasts alike will be enthralled by this exploration of how momentous compositions have responded to — and inspired — pivotal events. The History of Great Military Blunders and the Lessons They Teach

“All battles are in some degree … disasters.” These words by military historian John Keegan are true in that military conflicts inevitably involve death and destruction. Yet despite their tragic cost, many battles are regarded as great triumphs, while others are nearly universally declared blunders. What qualifies such battles for special condemnation, or inquiry, for that matter? Why focus on failure at all? Perhaps above all else, it is the element of avoidability that makes these catastrophes so worthy of exploration. Military history often highlights success and suggests a sense of inevitability about victory, but there is so much that can be learned from studying failure, particularly when it’s unexpected. From how the arc of history was altered by the outcome of these battles to how such mistakes could have been avoided to how they might be circumvented in the future, there are numerous important lessons to be gleaned. You may even consider how the world might be different if these egregious errors had not occurred. Tour at the Andy Warhol Museum: Revelation Wednesday, Nov. 20 9:30 a.m. Cost: $10

Andy Warhol: Revelation is the first exhibition to comprehensively examine the pop artist’s complex Catholic Faith in relation to his artistic production. While his monumental crosses and depictions of Christ directly reference biblical stories, this exhibition will also explore his coded depictions of spirituality, such as an unfinished film reel depicting the setting sun. Born in Pittsburgh to a devout Byzantine Catholic family, Warhol grew up attending multiple weekly services at his local church with his mother, Julia Warhola. In the Warhola family’s Carpatho-Rusyn neighborhood, life revolved around the church community, and the young artist was deeply impacted from this environment. The exhibition will trace the influence of his religious roots in Pittsburgh to his pop career in New York City. Bring Karen Hammond $10 by Nov. 15 for your ticket to this amazingly unusual exhibit!
