Todd Depastino: The Road To The Civil War Wed., Dec. 18 7 p.m. Assembly Room

Secession Winter — that four months between Lincoln’s election and inauguration — saw seven states leave the Union. Was it legal to secede? Legal opinion was split then, as it is now. Lincoln didn’t think it was, but he also believed he had no authority to force the states back into the Union. Then, he decided to resupply Fort Sumpter, one of the only federal properties in the South not taken over by the Confederate States. That was the trigger. The first shots were fired, and the two sides were suddenly at war. How did North and South stack up in the coming showdown? Come hear about the different advantages each side enjoyed.

LIFELONG LEARNING

Mondays, 4 p.m., Activity Room 5

The History of Great Military Blunders and the Lessons They Teach “All battles are in some degree … disasters.” Military historian John Keegan’s words are true in that military conflicts inevitably involve death and destruction. Yet, despite their tragic cost, many battles are regarded as great triumphs, while others are nearly universally declared blunders. What qualifies such battles for special condemnation, or inquiry, for that matter? Why focus on failure at all? Perhaps, above all else, the element of avoidability makes these catastrophes so worthy of exploration. Military history often highlights success and suggests a sense of inevitability about victory, but we can learn so much from studying failure, particularly when it’s unexpected. From how the arc of history was altered by the outcome of these battles or how such mistakes could have been avoided, to how they might be circumvented in the future, there are numerous important lessons. Consider how the world might be different if these egregious errors had not occurred.
