This month's discussion topic is "Power in Politics VS Power in the Bible."

Todd DePastino: The Road To The Civil War Thurs., Jan. 9 7 p.m.

Assembly Room

Todd DePastino continues his discussion on the Civil War by recounting the first great battle at Bull Run, which the Southern press nicknamed “The Great Skedaddle” in reference to all the Union soldiers fleeing the battlefield. The debacle at Bull Run caused Lincoln to reconsider General Winfield Scott’s warning that the war would be long and difficult. In response, Lincoln issued General Order No. 1, the Grand Strategy for victory, and launched a multipronged campaign against the South in the spring of 1862. It succeeded well enough not to fail, but it didn’t conquer the South, either. One surprising advantage emerged from the Grand Strategy that promised to tip the balance: enlisting runaway slaves in the war effort. Come hear how a war for the Union got transformed into a war for emancipation.

Book Discussion Group Mon., Jan. 20 1 p.m. Activity Room 2

Come discuss Fredrik Backman’s “Britt-Marie Was Here,” a heartwarming story about a woman rediscovering herself after a personal crisis. Britt-Marie can’t stand a mess, but that is exactly what her life has become. She leaves behind an unfaithful husband and a lifetime of taking care of everyone before herself and moves to a backwater town where she has the job of looking after a crumbling recreation center, the favorite hangout of the town’s supremely untalented children’s soccer team. As the fastidious Britt-Marie is drawn into the daily doings, hopes and dreams of her unpredictable fellow citizens, she is faced with new challenges that require more than her formidable powers of organization and unrivaled knowledge of cleaning products can handle. She must learn to let down her guard and connect. This irresistible novel about a woman who is hard to like but easy to love has been called Backman’s (author of “A Man Called Ove”) truest, most satisfying book to date.

GET READY, GET SET, GO! Starting January 2020, Masonic Village at Sewickley residents and staff will be moving toward a more sustainable lifestyle. Trying to make a difference in the way we treat our environment, we will join so many others in an effort to reverse the damage that has been done and reduce our use of fossil fuels and non-degradable plastic trash. The Pennsylvania Resource Commission and Sustainable Sewickley will join us on Jan. 23 for an enlightening program that will educate us about the dilemma of and solutions for the plastic pollution problem. Please let Karen Hammond know if you would like to join and/or work with the Committee for Sustainable Living (a subcommittee of the “Envision our Future Committee). We need help educating ourselves and others so that our world is a better place for future generations. Every little effort leads to improvement. Look for ongoing information and programs as we travel on to a more sustainable future. Some of our early changes are evident already: 1. Just ask your server if you would like a straw. 2. We now have an array of environmentally-friendly products in the store and will be getting more replacements for single-use plastics. 3. We are slowly replacing Styrofoam containers with biodegradable ones like the coffee cups in the social rooms of the clubhouse. 4. BYOM! Bring Your Own Mug to the puzzle room when you fill up your coffee!

LIFELONG LEARNING “Living History: Great Events of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds” takes you back in time and throws a spotlight on two dozen turning points which irrevocably changed the tide of history. Taught by acclaimed Colgate University professor Robert Garland, these dramatic lectures examine key events from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and medieval Europe and Asia. Spanning thousands of years and three continents, this course illuminates fascinating historical dramas on the individual scale. Professor Garland takes you into the scene and allows you to hear what he calls the “heartbeat of history.” Rather than merely reviewing the facts of events such as the Battle of Marathon, the arrest and trial of Jesus and the coronation of Charlemagne, you’ll engage with a variety of first-hand accounts and authentic primary and secondary sources to experience what it was like to live these events as they occurred. From reports by historians such as Herodotus and Livy to official scrolls and administrative records, these eyewitness sources and ancient documents take you back in time through the eyes of people who were there.
