Cep explains, as well as it is likely ever to be explained, why Lee went silent after “… Mockingbird.” It is here, in her description of another writer’s failure to write, that her book makes a magical leap from a superbly written true-crime story to the sort of story that even Lee would have been proud to write.

OPPORTUNITIES PING PONG “Great serve.”
“Boy, what a good volley that was.”
“You rat!”
Those are just a few of the comments you hear on Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. as you approach Activity Room 6. A few of our dedicated (but not necessarily athletic) ping pong players never held a paddle before joining the group; others are reviving their abilities from younger days.
PROJECT LINUS If you knit, crochet or sew and are interested in helping seriously ill or traumatized children, Project Linus could use your help. Our group makes baby blankets and quilts for these children, and Project Linus donates these items to various organizations in the Allegheny, Washington, Butler and Westmoreland Counties: EMS units, police departments, hospitals, neonatal care units, etc. The Linus group meets every Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Card Room. Materials are provided to make these items.
Whatever skill level you might be, please come and join us for an hour of good times and a little exercise.

LIFELONG LEARNING “Living History: Great Events of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds” takes you back in time and throws a spotlight on two dozen turning points which irrevocably changed the tide of history. Taught by acclaimed Colgate University professor Robert Garland, these 24 dramatic lectures examine key events from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and medieval Europe and Asia. Spanning thousands of years and three continents, this course illuminates fascinating historical dramas on the individual scale. Professor Garland takes you into the scene and allows you to hear what he calls the “heartbeat of history.” Rather than merely reviewing the facts of events such as the Battle of Marathon, the arrest and trial of Jesus and the coronation of Charlemagne, you’ll engage with a variety of firsthand accounts and authentic primary and secondary sources to experience what it was like to live these events as they occurred. From reports by historians such as Herodotus and Livy to official scrolls and administrative records, these eyewitness sources and ancient documents take you back in time through the eyes of people who were there. Bring that special someone to Heinz Hall on Valentine’s weekend. Maurice Ravel set the love of “Daphnis and Chloe” to his most sensuous score. It is, in the estimation of no less than Stravinsky, “one of the most beautiful products of all French music.” And virtuoso Ray Chen returns for Sibelius’ misty “Violin Concerto.” To purchase a ticket, see Karen Hammond, and then sign up on the registration line for your seat on the bus.
